More than 34,000 Victorian residents lost connection to power at some point during the storms. Eastern regional areas were especially affected, with powerlines brought down in towns such as Newborough, Drouin and Warragul. 'Why didn't they just say to people, come get this before our time runs out? They would rather bin it than give it away,' one frustrated man wrote online.  'Yes, throw it in the bin and wave at those that have nothing on the way home,' another said. 'How about we bring in fines for all supermarkets that dump useable food?' One woman couldn't believe Coles had lost the food in the first place. 'Coles make profit over $1 billion yet they can't afford to buy a generator?' However others saw it from the supermarket's perspective, saying if anyone got sick from contaminated food, Coles would have to take the rap. 'Legally they cannot (donate the goods), if they give someone food poisoning and kill them they are liable.' A Coles spokesperson said the safety of its customers is paramount.  'Due to the extreme weather that hit much of Victoria early last week, there were widespread power outages, including in the Drouin and surrounding areas,' the spokesperson said. 'Food safety is paramount at Coles and unfortunately as a result of products being un-refrigerated for an extended period of time, for safety and quality reasons, we needed to dispose of a number of products to ensure customer safety. 'Where possible, Coles always donates product that is fit for use and safe for consumption to food rescue organisations.'
