Another tobacconist has been targeted in an early-morning arson attack
Police were called to the business on River Hills Road about 3.30am on Tuesday after reports two men in dark clothing were trying to break in
Failing to gain entry at either the back or front
the pair allegedly set fire to items at the front of the store
The Fortitude Valley tobacconist attacked this month
Members of the public and fire crews extinguished the small blaze
with the business reportedly suffering only minor damage
It follows a string of recent attacks on tobacco shops across Greater Brisbane
a masked man entered a new store on Wickham Street in Fortitude Valley – next to Prohibition nightclub – about 3am with a jerry can and set the building alight after a confrontation with the owner
“We have had a number of tobacco stores targeted recently
We can’t confirm whether or not this is related
but that link is being investigated,” Inspector Jane Healy said at the time
“This has only been a tobacco store for maybe two or three weeks
Brisbane Times revealed in November many convenience stores in the CBD and surrounding suburbs were selling illegally imported cigarettes under the counter – or sometimes in plain sight
“They’re illegal … I don’t know where we get them
I’m not the manager,” one seller told this masthead
Almost all stores sold Manchester brand cigarettes
and many also stocked Chinese brand Double Happiness
Prices ranged from $17 to $25 a pack – about 50 per cent cheaper than most legitimately taxed plain-packaging equivalents
More than 5.2 million cigarettes and 1.2 tonnes of loose tobacco were seized from Queensland retailers in a 12-week blitz from July
Organised criminals are believed to control about 75 per cent of the market

Police Minister Dan Purdie told Brisbane Times investigators were working to stamp out the possibility of a growing turf war between illegal tobacco suppliers
“One thing we don’t want to do is jeopardise the safety of innocent Queenslanders,” he said
“[The incidents are] certainly something that we don’t want to spread or escalate
“We’ve got assigned detectives in Queensland that are now focusing on potential criminal links to the illegal tobacco trade

Centacare supporters: Eileen and Roger Taufel
and Centacare executive director Peter Selwood at the official launch of the Aishling Centre
ROGER Taufel can sum up the experience of sending his son Jonathan to Centacare’s redeveloped Aishling facility in one
“Jono comes home with a smile on his face,” Mr Taufel said
Opened last November and given an official opening this week
the Eagleby facility offers flexible short-stay accommodation and support services for children and young adults with disabilities
The original Aishling facility was well-known to the Taufel family
who has Down syndrome and autism (spectrum disorder) frequented the centre for 25 years
“Jono needs respite as well as we need respite,” Mr Taufel said
“The main thing is continuity of care and this has been a haven for us
it’s a question of being in a particular spot and knowing he’s comfortable and feels secure
“You leave your child in the care of someone and you want them to receive the very best care they can
The Taufels have embraced the new and improved $2.6 million facility
which incorporates an enhanced living environment
external courtyards and the latest technology
The facility offers clients around-the-clock care
or a longer holiday on a regular basis or when it suits them best
Archbishop Mark Coleridge blessed the facility at the official opening on July 11
“As we embrace the introduction of the NDIS
one of Australia’s most significant social reforms
we’ve set ourselves the challenge of creating a new and unique environment that better responds to the hopes and aspirations of our clients
their families and carers,” Centacare’s executive director Peter Selwood said
from a small and ageing premises to the state-of-the-art facility it is today
speaks to our commitment to engage and enable our clients as active participants in shaping and defining the support and services they received
“Our clients and their families know what works best for them – it’s our job to listen
understand and respond in a way that allows them to make choices about how to live their lives.”
Aishling acts as a hub for a range of learning activities
Every morning a mini-bus picks up clients from their homes
They can look forward to meeting new people
trying new activities and learning different skills aligned to their individual goals
The choices and opportunities offered to clients are always changing – sailing
such as preparing and delivering meals for Meals on Wheels
Clients have the option to choose how they would like to spend their time and are encouraged to participate in activities that are tailored to suit their individual interests and goals
“There’s a legitimate need for places like this,” Mr Taufel said
“We have an ageing population and ageing parents are very concerned about what happens to their children with difficulties when they pass on.”

volunteered and raised my family in is an immense privilege and honour
I love Logan and over the last four years I have worked hard to get the job done for our local community
I have advocated strongly to get vital upgrades and funding for our community:
A first half display of power and guile was too much for a spirited Eagleby Giants as Souths Inala Warriors ran out 46-0 winners in their Rugby League Brisbane Southside Open 3 clash on Saturday
playing out of St Brendan’s Kookaburra Park this season
made it three wins from three outings and sit at the top of the ladder after sweeping aside the Giants in sweltering conditions
Superbly led by halfback and captain Matthew Stanley
Inala were near faultless and it was some spirited defence by Eagleby and some off-target goal kicking by Inala that prevented the score blowing out even further
Inala centre Daniel Stanley scored the first of his side's 10 tries after he collected a nice floating pass from Stanley to zip away and score in the fourth minute of play
Stanley again was in the thick of the action as he toyed with the Giants defence to fire out a beautiful cut out pass finding powerful centre Maroni Niu who made no mistake going over untouched to score their second
Further tries to fullback Des Namok and lock Kunta Matini (who nailed a superb touchline conversion)
with Matthew Stanley masterminding another precision pass to find Daniel Stanley who shrugged off three would be defenders to score his second
Eagleby were well behind on the scoreboard
but were certainly standing up to the opposition and were damaging in parts
dishing out some ferocious defence of their own
Jimmy De La Cruz and the hulking Reeff Tangata were arguably the Giants best
and added another try to winger Paul Lulia whose scintillating sideline burst saw the flanker tip toe down the sideline to score inches from the line
and when it appeared Eagleby’s first try was imminent
he picked up a loose carry from the Giants like a thief in the night
He put on the afterburners to race 80m and score a magnificent individual try
Niu romped in for his second try after the afternoon
using his brute strength to stroll in for the easiest of tries
replacement Warriors player Nathan Bani ended the game with an exclamation point by grubbering through for himself and scoring under the sticks

There's no prizes for guessing why Beenleigh's Distillery Road has its name
All you need to do is look for the red building on the banks of the Albert River
where Beenleigh Artisan Distillers has sat since 1884
The heritage-listed site is no longer just a go-to for fans of spirits
It's also home to a restaurant serving pub-style dishes that often come slathered with — what else
the corn ribs and sticky pork belly bites and you'll be eating rum condiments whether or not you've opted for the eatery's beverage of choice to wash down your meal
you can also finish your lunch or dinner with rum liqueur coffee creations
from mojitos using Beenleigh Artisan Distillers' white rum and a distiller's iced tea made with spiced rum through to a rum sour
rum old fashioned and rum-based twist on the espresso martini
Beenleigh's new Distillery Restaurant heroes not only its favourite tipple
but also local produce and Aussie flavours
Other dishes to try include spicy chicken wings
char-grilled chilli garlic squid and a 300-gram Darling Downs porterhouse steak
the sweets range spans a meringue stack paired with dragonfruit compote
as well as a sticky toffee pudding with burnt orange caramel
Seasonal sips feature alongside the distillery's regular cocktails on the drinks list
plus seven of Beenleigh Artisan Distillers' own drops
and Queen Adelaide and Beresford wines round out the libations
Fancy not only stopping by for a meal and a drink
