East Cannington resident Des Bowers has raised concerns over a bus stop bench directly outside Gibbs Street Primary School
which he claims becomes dangerously hot under direct sunlight
posing a risk to unsuspecting students and commuters
As the bench has recently been covered in advertising presumed to be aluminium
who said he had measured temperatures of 71 degrees on the seat on a day when the temperature in East Cannington was just 27 degrees
Mr Bowers believes it has gone beyond being a slight problem and is now completely dangerous for the children who use the bus stop before and after school
“It’s only going to get worse as we head into summer and start having several days over 35 degrees
“They should put a sign warning children or anyone using the seat of the dangers of heat; someone is going to burn themselves on it; it’s just not on; it needs to be removed as soon as possible; it’s scorching.”
With another 110 bus stop benches featuring advertising in the City of Canning
Mr Bowers is worried this isn’t the only one that could pose a safety risk
but he isn’t sure his complaints to the council and Public Transport Authority (PTA) are getting anywhere
the complaints just go in a cycle; they just wash their hands of it,” he said
I’ll definitely have to put a danger tape on it or something.”
After some confusion as to who is responsible for the bench
the PTA said the bench is the city’s responsibility
“The PTA does not have any commercial arrangements in place for advertising on bus stop infrastructure
“It is the local government who is responsible for the provision of seats and shelters
Mayor Patrick Hall confirmed the city had received a complaint about the suitability of the bus seat provided at the location and the lack of a bus shelter at the stop
and clarified who is responsible for the condition of the bench
“The City of Canning has a contractual arrangement in place for the maintenance
street bench seats and street litter bin enclosures at no cost to the City
in exchange for exclusive advertising rights,” Mayor Hall said
“If a bus stop bench is not in a suitable condition as required by the contract
the City may request the contractor to modify the bench or remove it from the City’s road network.”
Des Bowers said there used to be a bus shelter at the site
but it was never replaced after being removed to accommodate roadworks in the area
and the lone bench was only recently installed
students were sitting in the gutter with their legs on the road
and they once again are having to do that as the bench is too hot on some days.”
“I’m not going to stand by and let other children sit on those kinds of seats
just because some money is trying to be saved.”
a bus shelter is expected to be installed at the stop on Gibbs Street within the 2024/25 financial year
A handful of Canning residents are speaking out against plans to bulldoze and build a road over the Cannington Claypan
known to be a threatened ecological community
is a 6.2-hectare bushland area bounded by the Western Power electrical substation
The final stage (Stage 3) of the Southern Link Road project is expected to create a link over the claypan – between Gerard Street and Grey St
Volunteers from the Friends of the Queens Park Bushland and Canning River Regional Park are now calling for the proposal to be rejected
CRRP field officer/advisory committee member Jo Stone said the proposal goes against at least six of the ten clearing principles for native vegetation
under Schedule 5 of the Environmental Protection Act 1986
Ms Stone also said it goes against the City of Canning’s Local Biodiversity Strategy and the Canning City Centre Activity Centre Plan
“The claypan is the only one of its kind in the metropolitan area,” she said
“The City of Canning is re-negging on its own biodiversity strategy
“I think it’s very sad that the City of Canning does not wish to recognise this very unique area for all its worth.”
A City of Canning spokesperson said the city was determined to protect the claypan whilst supporting the community’s interests
“The proposed new road has been realigned from its original position and narrowed to limit the impact on the claypan,” they said
“The city is proposing to address all impacts by monitoring hydrology
“The city has prepared a range of environmental studies which are currently under assessment by the Federal Department of Agriculture
and Environment to determine the environmental impact of the proposal
“The construction of Stage 3 of the Southern Link Road can only occur if environmental approvals and land acquisition are achieved.”
The spokesperson added that the Southern Link Road project was part of a “strategic transport objective”
“The completion of this link will ultimately provide a direct north-south connection between Orrong Road and Albany Highway,” they said
“It will accommodate projected traffic growth in the Canning City Centre
where an additional 25,000 residents are expected over time
“It will also support the future development of the Queens Park and East Cannington communities.”

WA police have seized more than 200kg of methamphetamine worth more than $200 million from an alleged transnational drug syndicate, linked to a boat that was intercepted near Geraldton three weeks ago.
The crystal methamphetamine haul is the second largest drug bust in WA's history, with Deputy Commissioner Gary Dreibergs saying it was "the biggest methamphetamine seizure in WA this year".
According to the Commissioner, 216kg of meth was found in what he described as "a well-funded, highly-organised, sophisticated overseas criminal organisation".
"They certainly are brazen and they certainly are committed," he said.
More than 200kgs of crystal meth have been seized from Perth suburbs worth $200 million.
"They are absolutely well organised."
The WA Joint Organised Crime Task Force operation started a month ago following the detection of a suspect fishing boat off the coast of WA near Geraldton.
After an order was given on May 1 to intercept the boat no drugs were found, but investigators allege a smaller vessel shipped the drugs to Perth before police got there.
Bad weather that hindered surveillance has been suggested as a cause for authorities failing to stop the drugs reaching the mainland.
AFP raid houses in East Cannington and Embleton finding more than 200kgs of crystal methamphetamine.
Raids in East Cannington saw about 150kg of methamphetamine seized, while about 50kg was found in a house in Embleton.
Fourteen people are facing charges of commercial drug importation offences.
Fishing boat found off WA coast near Geraldton, allegedly carried the meth from China.
Eight Chinese nationals aged between 37 and 56-years-old were found on the boat, and six Malaysian nationals aged between 24 and 54 were arrested in Perth's suburbs.
According to the Australian Federal Police, two of the Malaysians are in Australia on tourist visas, while the others are unlawful non-citizens.
AFP Acting Assistant Commissioner David Stewart said the drug syndicate was very sophisticated and complex.
"We'll certainly allege that we have disrupted and dismantled a significant organised crime network," he said.
Australian Crime Commission CEO Chris Dawson said WA had over-represented itself in some of the drug user monitoring and had shown a disproportionate, higher level of users per capita.
"In the last two years, there's in the order approaching 700kg of crystal methamphetamine that's been detected in Western Australia," he said.
"This is not to say that it was destined just for Western Australia.
