Swan Districts did plenty right last Saturday at Steel Blue Oval bar get over the line and now will look to complete the job this Saturday back home against East Fremantle
Swans did look on target for a lot of last Saturday afternoon when hosting Peel Thunder to get that elusive first win of the 2025 WAFL Men’s season before the visitors kicked the last goal of the game to secure the five-point win
It was a heartbreaking way for Swan Districts to lose a fourth straight game of the season on the back of reaching the preliminary final last year
but the chance presents back at Steel Blue Oval this Saturday to open their account
Swans are hosting an East Fremantle team coming into the match up in fourth position on the WAFL ladder having won three of four matches so far in 2025 including a 30-point win last Saturday at home to Subiaco
Saturday’s game will be the first time the two teams have met since Round 19 last year which saw East Fremantle win by 36 points when they met on neutral turf at Arena Joondalup with both teams on the way to taking part in the finals soon after
That meant that the Sharks have now won the last seven games against Swans with the last time the black-and-whites scored a win against East Fremantle being back on Round 8
which was also at Steel Blue Oval when they won by 44 points
Swan Districts’ midfield looks set to be boosted with the return of Connor Blakely for Saturday’s game on the back of Zane Trew’s debut last Saturday against Peel
Jake Pasini is also on track to play his first game of the season with Ayden Cartwright
Brenton Hilton and Luke Taylor also added to the squad for the game with East Fremantle
The only out at this stage for Swans is 99-game on baller Josh Cipro after he kicked the first goal for the team last week against the Thunder and has averaged 21.5 disposals so far in 2025
East Fremantle beat Subiaco by 30 points last Saturday and from that team have added Lachlan Blakiston
Harry Pickett and Griffin Vladich to their squad
Going out for the Sharks are Jackson McManus and Max Murphy
The day’s action at Steel Blue Oval begins with the colts contest on Saturday morning getting underway between Swan Districts and East Fremantle at 9:25am
Swans come into the game currently sitting in seventh position on the colts ladder with a 2-2 record as they take on a Sharks team who have played three matches for two wins to be in third place
East Fremantle is fresh off beating Subiaco by 50 points last Saturday while Swan Districts is also coming off a 53-point victory at Steel Blue Oval last Sunday against Peel Thunder
Cooper Dudfield and Levi Calcott all kicked three goals each for Swans with Liam Hrabar and Leon Kickett adding two
Swan Districts will now be looking to make it consecutive wins in the colts and handing the Sharks a second loss of the season
and first since they went down to Claremont back in Round 2
That leads into the reserves match up that begins at 11:55am also at Steel Blue Oval with Swan Districts looking to continue the unbeaten start to the 2025 season
Swans have started the season impressively in the reserves beating West Perth by 41 points
South Fremantle by nine points and then Peel Thunder by 45 points last Saturday at Steel Blue Oval
The next test now for the black-and-whites is an East Fremantle team currently sitting in fourth position having won two of three matches so far in 2025 including a 51-point victory last Saturday against Subiaco on their home deck at The Good Grocer Park

Labor majorities were recorded at all 35 polling places used at the 2022 election, Labor's two-party vote rising above 70% in 11. Results ranged from 53.8% at the Tricolore Community Centre in East Fremantle to 83.1% at the John Curtin College of the Arts in Fremantle where both Labor and Greens candidates polled more than 38% of the first preference vote. While not shown on the map, Fremantle includes offshore Rottnest Island. (Click on polling place for results)
Hulett runs the 'Kate and Abel' shop in Fremantle, is a photographer, writer and artist and sits on the City of Fremantle destination marketing working group. She ran the Labor Party a very close race in the state seat of Fremantle at the WA election in March and shortly afterwards announced she would contest the Federal seat.

The WAFL Eagles fell victim to a fourth-quarter fade out against East Fremantle on Saturday
the visitors falling by 49 points at The Good Grocer Park
the reinvigorated Eagles put on a competitive and spirited display against the Sharks
but they couldn’t match East Fremantle’s experience in the 20.11 (131) to 12.10 (82) defeat
The Eagles started well with a quick play on the wing finding Jack Petruccelle
The East Fremantle defence was tested early by the Eagle’s young and lively forward line
but the Sharks quickly hit back with a nice passage of play through the middle
with debutant Jack Cocking kicking his first goal
West Coast responded with goals to Petrucelle and Coen Livingstone
The second term started in West Coast’s half but quickly shifted to the opposite end seeing Cam Eardley capitalise with a goal
Petruccelle hit back scoring his third goal for the Eagles
however the lead quickly extended to 10 points off the boot of Shark’s Rueben McGuire
West Coast failed to utilise opportunities while McGuire took easily the mark of the day for the Sharks just before half time
extending the margin to 21 points at the main break
The third quarter opened with two vital goals from Flynn and Luke Yeo for the Eagles
but the Sharks’ Tom Joyce pushed the lead back out to 15 shortly after
The Eagles held strong at the start of the final quarter but their challenge to remain competitive fell short as the Sharks continued to dominate through the likes of Jono Marsh
Flynn finished with a team-high 27 touches
while Harvey Johnson impressed with 23 disposals

After three years and not without a few issues along the journey
Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman has announced that the East Fremantle Community Park redevelopment is now complete
It means the East Fremantle Football Club can finally move back into its home base after three years
where they’ll walk into state-of-the-art facilities to the tune of $34 million
Mr Templeman said the redevelopment was a State Government election commitment
“I would like to give a warm welcome to the East Fremantle Football Club on their return to their spiritual home in Moss Street,” said Mr Templeman
“The players will soon be training and playing there and enjoy new modern facilities that will not just benefit the club
but also other sporting groups and the wider community.”
$26 million came from State Government funding to create the integrated precinct
which is also home to East Fremantle Bowling Club and East Fremantle Croquet Club
with a new basketball half-court and all-abilities nature play space
A further $340,000 in Government funding will go towards the Sharks’ relocation and fit-out costs
signage and some temporary game day infrastructure
the full list of facilities at the park now includes: Carnaby’s Cafe
Carnaby’s Bar & Restaurant and a dog exercise area
Sharks’ fans will be delighted to see their team play once again at their original home ground in the 2025 season,” said Mr Templeman
“I commend both the Sharks club and local council for finalising negotiations over lease and licence agreements so that footy can now return to East Fremantle in a brand new
state-of-the-art facility that will be a valuable asset for the local community.”

The WAFL Eagles kicked off their season against East Fremantle
with the occasion marked by the official opening of the Sharks’ new home ground

the Eagles ultimately succumbed to East Fremantle’s class and experience
falling by 49 points in a 20.11 (131) to 12.10 (82) defeat
Senior coach Kyal Horsley said it was a good opportunity to get a closer look at the new game plan in action and how the team is settling in together
“It was great opportunity to see our new game plan and the team chemistry of a group that featured 10 players playing their first game in Eagles colours,” Horsley said
“There is nothing like a stress test against one of the best teams to get a look at the elements of the game plan
we went into the quarter- time break just seven points down on the back of some clearance dominance
we lost our reigning Best and Fairest winner Harley Sparks with a sickening concussion in the first 10 minutes of the game
thankfully Harley is okay and was in good spirits on Sunday
“Despite being able to trap the ball in our half and create enough front half stoppages and front half turnovers
we were unable to convert in front of goal
and we were unable to stop the Shark’s in transition
“East Fremantle were able to rise to all of our challenges
and despite getting within 19 points in the final term
they were able to steady and kick away late
we reviewed the game with clarity and have a clearer understanding of our strengths and deficiencies heading into round two against Subiaco.”

It was an imposing performance and credit to the attitude he has had
Shannon played with the intensity that was well above game standard and led from the front with his effort and selflessness

Bo played the first half at halfback and the second half as an inside mid
intent in the contest and work rate in both roles and had an impact creating drive in offence and turnovers in defence
Coen played as a forward-ruck and it was a solid game in both roles
He was able to win or half all contests while playing as a forward
collecting 15 hitouts and four clearances from limited time
He couldn’t get into the game early and despite working hard it just wasn’t going his way
To his credit he kept working through it and had a solid second half
showing his courage and fearlessness in the air with a real highlight mark
which he then converted for his first goal
Batman played as a key back and he took the learnings from last week into this week and grew in the role
His positioning was better this week which got him into more contests
and he was able to use his physicality in the contest
He used the ball well by hand and foot in tricky conditions
Harvey played as a wing in the first half and halfback in the second half
He showed his flexibility and ability to play multiple roles
with the move being made to cover the loss of Sparks in our back half
Harvey acquitted himself well defensively and gave real drive offensively
Mally got some attention all game from an old school lock down defender
which is a testament to his performances in the final two pre-season games
finishing with 10 touches and few shots at goal
The best thing about his game was that he turned his attention to how he could help the team
applying some intense pressure and creating multiple turnovers
played small and was able to win or half his contest
His leadership and willingness to help others was clear
He used the ball well and chose the right options coming out of the back half
High Performance Manager Mat Inness provides an update on West Coast's injured players
3 September 2024 · WAFL · EastFremantleFC · Sport · TonyMicale · WAFL · Jack Crawshaw
Former WAFL Premiership Coach Tony Micale believes East Fremantle needs to take matters into their own hands regarding the ongoing delays in returning to their home ground.
East Fremantle has not had access to its home ground
with no confirmed end date in sight for when they would finally return to its redeveloped facility.
East Fremantle played a ‘home’ final at Revo Fitness Stadium despite earning the right to host Sunday’s Elimination Final against Claremont at their home ground.
This had a major impact on their premiership defence
with Claremont knocking East Fremantle out of finals by 24-points.
“I’m starting to get a bit worried about it….I can’t believe that the supporters aren’t screaming out asking what is going on,” Micale told SportFM.
“That’s why I wouldn’t level any criticism at their performance yesterday
I know people tried to derail them last year with a salary cap issue
that I think finally all of this stuff has got to them.
that East Fremantle played a final in an opposition’s front yard because they had to
They just get flicked around from pillar to post.”
With no end in sight for the situation at East Fremantle and it having an impact on the premiership defence
Micale believes figures at the club need to take action as speculation some players may retire or move on has emerged.
“People are sick and tired of hearing the same rhetoric about what’s happened
and the negative comments about what needs to be fixed
what’s being done about getting this right?” he said.
I’d be virtually going to the club and saying
unless you’ve got this sorted out and we’re back on the Oval… forget me.
is that there’s even talk that players are looking to move on or even retire
It was even mentioned to me from somebody inside the club last night after the game.
“I don’t know the reasons why there’s a number of players retiring
But some of the stuff that is of major concern
East Fremantle last played at their home ground three years ago before the $34 million project to upgrade their home ground commenced.
While a majority of the facilities are open
East Fremantle’s return to Shark Park has been halted due to unresolved licensing agreements and turf approvals
East Fremantle Football Club and the Town of East Fremantle have also clashed because of clauses in the licensing agreement
boardroom usage and the lack of a fence surrounding the grounds
Micale believes both sides are responsible for the debacle to an extent.
and there’s been allegations made against the council that because it’s a community-based club
they’ve virtually pushed East Fremantle into the background,” he said.
we’re not all that fussed whether you’re here or not
we’ve been traditionally here and been the guts of East Fremantle district for 150 years
and then you’ve got the government who’ve put in $26 million towards the development of this new facility.
and I’m saying surely you’re all responsible in a way.
“East Fremantle are the ones copping the brunt of it
but they deserve to cop the brunt if they’ve sat down on the heads of an agreement and gone we haven’t even got a social club in this facility
EAST Fremantle prospect Joshua Nomlatyu fell in love with footy watching his two favourite AFL clubs
he enters his top-age campaign having developed through the Dockers’ Next Generation Academy pathway and Sharks’ junior sides
Nomlatyu, who models his game off modern day Hawks and Dockers, is capable of playing in every key position post. Whether forward, back, or in the ruck, the 197cm talent showed great promise across 13 WAFL Colts appearances last year to be named in Western Australia’s Under 18 summer squad
We spoke to Nomlatyu at last month’s WAFL Colts preseason testing event
Q: What are your earliest memories of football
JN: Watching on the television in my grandad’s living room
Hawthorn and Fremantle especially played very intense games
which was good to watch so that’s probably where I fell in love with footy at around nine years old
Q: How would you describe your ability and play style
JN: I like to play a James Sicily style role because I enjoy playing down back
If I’m playing in defence I think my bodywork is good and I get the ball to ground as well as out-marking my opponents
Defensively I read the ball well and know where the play is going so I can intercept or create
Q: Is there a player that you model your game on
JN: I used to really like watching Cyril Rioli when I was younger
as a small forward he is who probably got me into footy
Nowadays I like to base my game on Josh Draper or James Sicily
Q: Would you consider yourself a Fremantle or a Hawthorn fan
Right now I watch whatever is on but my family are all Hawthorn and Fremantle fans
Q: How would you rate the success of your bottom-age campaign
JN: I think my first half of the year started strongly
In the second half of the season I dropped off a little due to fitness and playing a new role as a ruckman
but that was good for me because I got something out of it in that it I now know what I’m doing going into this year and we’ll see whether I play that ruck role
Q: How can East Fremantle improve and push into finals contention this season
JN: I think consistency was our biggest failure last year and playing four-quarter games will be important
We need to work on starting well and being aggressive early in games and carrying that through
Everyone will need to play their role properly
Q: Could you speak to what it means to have a family member in Avuya go through the same process as you
JN: It’s exciting comparing both of our seasons
We’ve grown up alongside each other the entire way
I know she’s playing really well right now and I’m excited to see where she goes this year and next year because it’s really cool watching her
Q: What has been the impact of Fremantle’s NGA programs on your development as a player
I know a lot more now since playing alongside other players in my age group
I’ve started to understand the culture and backgrounds of everyone and how it ties into footy
I’ve also seen different gameplans and as much as we struggle with the running and what not

an undefeated season up to the grand final did not yield a flag for East Fremantle
though the Sharks still boast one premiership and three grand finals in as many years
there is plenty of change out at Shark Park
so it will be fascinating to see how they fare
LAST SEASON: Runners-up2025 PREDICTION: 2nd-5th
East Fremantle is the great unknown in 20525
it would not be a shock to see them contending for the flag again
But having lost a number of key players to either retirement
it will be a season to semi rebuild while still having the top-end quality to test just about every side
Comments by West Australian Female Talent Manager Trent Cooper
Alicia BlizardTall Forward | 174cm | 15/11/2007
“Ali had a good carnival last year and a good finish for the East Fremantle
Really powerful forward and probably the best thing and the biggest improvement in her game has been her forward pressure where she’s elite at that level at applying that pressure so looking forward to seeing what she does this year.”
Kai ClucasMidfielder | 160cm | 09/12/2007
“Kai’s a father-daughter for Fremantle
Father Matthew played a lot for East Fremantle
She played all Rogers Cup last year but she’s developing well
and quite a good athlete so looking forward to seeing what she can do.”
Maya Louvel-FinnDefender/Midfielder | 169cm | 20/02/2007
“Maya was put up by East Fremantle last year as a prospect and then she tested really well
Plays as a defender and really good at the contest and can play on different players because of her power and athleticism.”
Avuya Nomlatyu (Bottom-age)
Ashleigh GomesMidfielder/Wing | 162cm | 24/09/1997
Gomes showed she can also play a wing role
though her experience will likely be needed o-nball this year
Expect her to put in yet another strong season in the blue and white
Amber KinnaneMidfielder | 170cm | 21/08/2001
Kinnane’s experience through the middle will be invaluable to the Sharks as they look to develop some midfielders through the guts
The club still has plenty of depth at either end
but expect quite a few young ones to come through the ranks
so is hitting her peak and can impact games in a big way
Anjelique RaisonKey Utility | 182cm | 07/09/2005
The return of Raison will be an important one for the Sharks
with the former East Fremantle junior spending a season at Claremont
Though she has had her injury interruptions
Raison is a terrific contested mark and booming kick
If she can gain that continuity then she can be one of the most consistent goalkickers for her side this season if played forward
