It’s overgrown with weeds and needs serious restoration
but the hottest house in Queensland this week drew more attention than even Pat Rafter’s house – and saw 300 people turn up to its first open home
With the full force of charms of yesteryear
Millbrook – built in the 1860s – was home to William Groom
The Public Trustee has the heritage home listed for auction on December 7 in a co-listing with Cooper Watson and Bria Hurst of Realway Property Partners – Toowoomba
Its popularity is unsurprising given the heritage listed renovator property is not just 300 metres from the CBD but on a massive 2,428sq m block – and it has never been listed for sale
A good restoration would do wonders for a home of this calibre
“There is no public record of a sale ever,” Mr Watson told The Courier-Mail
“The first open for inspection we had almost 300 people
That’s a pretty extreme open for inspection.”
We had enough staff there to handle it and everyone was relatively understanding
People didn’t mind waiting in line on the pavement to see the property.”
All signs were pointing to a strong result for the home under the hammer come December
Wonder how many people have come calling here over the years
french doors and big wide rooms are classic Queenslander features
“We’ve had lots of people expressing interest in this,” he said
“We have between 10 to 20 solid pieces of interest
It is an auction and so we expect a good result on the day
The property does require restoration so it will be somebody with a passion for that.”
The home is just 300 metres from the Toowoomba CBD
“‘Millbrook’ was previously owned by the renowned ‘Groom’ family and was originally built in the 1860s on Ruthven Street
Mr WH Groom was the first Mayor of Toowoomba and the first Toowoomba member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly,” was how it was described
The businessman was involved in the foundation of Toowoomba Grammar School
Toowoomba Permanent Building Society and the Toowoomba Chronicle
his wife relocated the house to Phillip Street in 1901 with it staying in the family until the mid 1930s when it passed to the Row family
A fireplace in the kitchen and loads of room for a mega renovation
“Dr Row was a well-known local doctor who set up Toowoomba’s first blood bank after World War II
He operated a successful medical practice from ‘Millbrook’ for many years.”
The property was put on the Queensland Heritage register in 2001 and still has all its character features including feature fireplaces four main rooms
decorative ceiling roses and feature lighting
The auction will be held on site at 9.30am on December 7

Regional Queensland is poised to repeat its 2023 performance as one of the leading regional market jurisdictions in the nation
We ranked its prospects as the fourth best in the nation in 2023
it scores a similar rating – fifth equal (with Melbourne) and the best of the regional markets
Regional Queensland has improved its national ranking in four of the five metrics – and maintained its rating in the fifth category
This suggests prices and rents will grow in many of the major regional markets in the state. In 2023
Regional Queensland recorded the second highest growth in its median house price (up 8.6%) behind South Australia
It also has the second highest growth in the median unit price (up 9.1%) after Western Australia
We expect Regional Queensland to do as well

“HMAS Toowoomba can be proud of their achievements in reducing the risk of malign activity
and preventing the disruption of seaborne trade in the Middle East,” Minister Reynolds said
“The crew has worked tirelessly and professionally to help legitimate mariners have unrestricted use of international waterways safely and with confidence,”
Minister Reynolds said the government remained committed to the multi-national effort to maintain security in the region
as the Middle East maritime domain remains strategically important to Australia’s economic and trade interests – but didn’t say when another ship would be deployed
Operation Manitou is Defence’s enduring contribution to support international efforts that promote maritime security
stability and prosperity in the Middle East
HMAS Toowoomba shared the tasking with the Combined Maritime Force
conducting counter-narcotics operations as part of Task Force 150 and maritime security operations in the Straits of Hormuz with the International Maritime Security Construct
HMAS Toowoomba seized more than 3000 kilograms of drugs during the deployment
Australia contributes to a multinational taskforce of 33 nations to maintain freedom of navigation
and promote regional stability and security of the maritime commons
The International Maritime Security Construct is a more recent organisation
convened by the USA to counter Iranian aggression in the area – and is contributed to by USA
Commander Australian Fleet Rear Admiral Jonathan Mead paid tribute to the families of the ship’s company
“As well as the hard work and dedication from the ship’s company
we recognise the important role their families and friends played during this deployment,” Rear Admiral Mead said
“Their support and steadfastness is integral
and allows those in uniform to achieve the mission.”

Royal Australian Navy’s Anzac-class frigate HMAS Toowoomba today departed her homeport of Fleet Base West in Rockingham
for a six-month deployment to the Middle East
CAPTION: Officers and sailors on HMAS Toowoomba line the upper decks as to farewell family
friends and colleagues as the ship departs for Operation Manitou from Fleet Base West
This is the 68th rotation of a Royal Australian Navy ship to the region since 1990 and the sixth for HMAS Toowoomba
This deployment is part of the Australian Defence Force’s contribution to promote maritime security and stability – Operation Manitou
Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds said Toowoomba and its crew of 190 officers and sailors would support Australia’s safe and open access to the region
and reaffirm Australia’s commitment to freedom of navigation
“This highly capable vessel will focus on promoting maritime security
stability and prosperity in the Middle East by supporting counter‑terrorism
and [enhancing] freedom of navigation,” Minister Reynolds said
“The importance of this deployment [for] the Middle East and the Indian Ocean Region cannot be overstated
and is essential to the security of our nation and our economy.”
Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Michael Noonan said Toowoomba’s crew were ready for the mission following 12 months of preparations
“Commander Mitchell Livingstone and his ship’s company have worked tirelessly to prepare for this deployment
and will form an integral part of the multi-national CMF,” he said
Vice Admiral Noonan also paid tribute to the families of Toowoomba’s ship’s company whose support was also significant to the deployment
“We ask a lot of the men and women of Toowoomba who leave their families and friends for this deployment
but we also ask as much from those they leave behind,” Vice Admiral Noonan said
This deployment is the 68th rotation of a Royal Australian Navy ship to the Gulf region
HMAS Toowoomba is scheduled to return to Fleet Base West in July 2020

philanthropist Clive Armitage puts approved luxury units on marketNews Corp Australia
A 3D rendering of the proposed set of luxury units at 32 Tourist Rd
A popular former McDonald’s king and philanthropist has taken his plan to build eight luxury units overlooking the Toowoomba Range to market
Clive Armitage was approved in August last year for the high-end three-bedroom units
which were slated for a parcel of land previously occupied by the old Bupa aged care home on Tourist Road in East Toowoomba
Now the 4100 sqm land parcel and DA has hit the market through an expressions of interest period by Ray White
Joint-lead agent Peter Marks said both interstate investors and locals were already circling the site for a variety of reasons
“The view and the opportunity to get that position (is the strongest aspect) — you’ve got 160-degree views of the valley,” he said
not just from developers but homeowners — I’ve got a couple of people wanting to build their own home on it
“We’ve had local developers contact us as well as people from Sydney — it’s across the nation at the present.”
Mr Marks said Mr Armitage, who was weighing up last year on whether to proceed with the plan
wanted to see what the market would offer for the unit approval
“He’s just got a lot on his plate and he wants to see what the market is offering,” he said
The expressions of interest campaign ends on September 2.
