Soundsystem brought a sombre party to Tower Hamlets on their return to headlining All Points East festival on Friday night The celebratory occasion came tinged with sadness as James Murphy mourned the recent death of his friend and business partner Justin Chearno the band’s professionalism helped them deliver a stunning set for a party crowd it swerves between debutants and dab hands - LCD Soundsystem returning to headline APE six years after being the first act to top the bill at the Victoria Park event who have nearly 40 years of experience on the road Parisian quartet Astral Bakers played their first show in the UK kicking off aptly with ‘Something New’: “I’m waiting for something new Theodora and Zoé came together with an intricate mech of vocals guitars and drums to create a calm soundscape to start a breezy day They sang four-part harmonies on ‘I Don’t Remember’ and encouraged the growing crowd to sing along to ‘Why’ A personal highlight was ‘Beautiful Everything’ which had a catchy driving rock vibe as they sang: “It’s a beautiful life it’s a beautiful.” Their first album ‘The Whole Story’ came out earlier in the year and it is guaranteed there will be a flurry of new listeners as a result of their set Nick Ward and his band came from Sydney to impress the crowd on the Amex Unsigned Stage They started the last gig of this international run with ‘Gimme’ before the fun bleeps in ‘Alien’ as he sings: “Sometimes it’s like I’m cut in two you know I’d give both parts to you.” The twenty-something was largely tied to his guitar for his brand of 00s-style pop-rock but dropped the instrument for ‘Shooting Star’ and ‘Closer’ the latter of which was released the day before and has a strong backing vocal game from Nick’s colleagues Debut full-length ‘House With The Blue Door’ comes out in October and he’s opening for Troye Sivan in his native Australia so it feels like the last time he’ll play in a half-full canopy and it feels like they’ll come back bigger Monobloc were playing their second ever UK show and the quintet delivered in their post-punk delivery Last month’s ‘Where Is My Garden’ is a little LCD Soundsystem-coded with the title line followed up by “Where are my friends?” They crammed as much as possible into their allocated 30 minutes Their dark room Interpol-esque vibes contrasted with the blazing sun behind the L’Oreal Paris stage you could sense their promise will deliver on many levels who has been tipped by BBC Introducing and Dazed before roaming around the stage while her drummer and guitarist had strong backing vocal duties The Londoner’s set included a wave of new material while she encouraged the crowd to sing along: “pick me love me.” It’s fun chaotic largely guitar-driven pop ‘Crush’ was an ode on an untalented Tom Verlaine lookalike as she informed the crowd who were not aware of him that Television are a “good band” and instils hope that maybe Aziya’s pop will also be inspirational 45 years from now Pixies are legends who have played more festivals than all the aforementioned new acts combined and they pulled a big crowd to the East Stage just drilling through songs as quickly and as passionately as possible and weaving their way through classics like ‘Wave of Mutilation’ and ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven’ The four-piece played it all out in front of a simple ‘P’ logo on their electronic backdrop screen as their classic dingy sound captivated the audience There was room for unreleased track ‘The Vegas Suite’ set to close out October’s ‘The Night the Zombies Came’ album which showed off the vocals of Emma Richardson on bass before coming back into more recognised territory with the poppy ‘Here Comes Your Man’ Guitarist Joey Santiago - in a green baseball cap - made wild sounds during ‘Vamos’ ahead of the UK surf version of ‘Wave of Mutilation’ The stage was coated in dry ice for ‘Where Is My Mind?’ another of those big festival anthems that audiences cannot get enough of creating one of the sing-alongs of the whole day They closed with their cover of Neil Young’s ‘Winterlong’ as they waved goodbye and took their farewell bows LCD Soundsystem hit the stage at five to nine with a measured opening through ‘Us v Them’ while a mirrorball high above them perks up halfway through the track There are expressive vocals from James Murphy and orange lights and psych visuals for another ‘american dream’ cut While the APE headliner set back in 2018 focused on the previous year’s ‘american dream’ record those were the only two songs from the album featured on Friday they chose to revel in the group’s rich history including a glorious version of 2010’s ‘I Can Change’ and then ‘Yr City’s a Sucker’ from the self-titled debut of 2005 with Murphy informing the crowd about the sad loss of Justin Chearno his friend and business partner in their Brooklyn restaurant The Four Horsemen The frontman admitted: “We’re all fucking destroyed This sucks.” He had gratitude for the audience for sticking with them The ‘Sound of Silver’ cut creates a raucous sing-along: “When someone great is gone” and a sharp burst of the sound of Daft Punk’s ‘Robot Rock’ the music was sometimes a little too powerful Still certain bits cut through - “You don’t know what you really want” from that song or the crowd singing along to ‘Home’ next up.  Another shift in momentum came with their Harry Nilsson cover ‘Jump into the Fire’ and 2010’s ‘Dance Yrself Clean’ which ended with Murphy having a sweet intimate moment with keyboardist Nancy Whang I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down’ has always been sentimental but the dedication to Justin made it doubly so It feels unfair to bill LCD Soundsystem as one-hit wonders but many acts would kill for a party anthem like the one song that James Murphy and co carry as a single calling card “That’s how it starts.” That’s how it ends a perfect song for a Friday night opening up into the bank holiday weekend The piano motif set off the audience with its sprawling wonder full of sonic noise as a parting shot to their first show in the capital for two years an antidote to the “There’s a ton of the twist but we’re fresh out of shout” line from ‘New York…’ There’s real credit for the group spreading their own slice of joy despite the obvious grief playing on their minds and bodies And the crowd are grateful for every second of it and will return for whatever’s next from James Murphy and the LCD Soundsystem team Toronto's very own soul star delight Tanika Charles shares the video for new track 'Talk To Me Nice' - the third single to taken from her upcoming album 'Reasons To Stay' The post-punk psychedelic powerhouse group that is Squid spun the heads off of the crowd lucky enough to see them perform at Camden’s Roundhouse Dreampop outfit featured a lineup of astounding artists who created a rich musical tapestry Kicking off in the afternoon was Navy Blue a rising star known for blending poetic lyricism with raw emotion His set introduced the audience to a distinctive East Coast vibe characterized by a smooth flow and introspective themes Navy Blue's performance resonated with fans and newcomers alike establishing a contemplative mood that perfectly whetted the appetite for the performers to come Stand out songs were certainly ‘Make Me Wanna’ and ‘Low Threshold’.  Following Navy Blue in the evening was Sainté delivering a genre-blurring performance that seamlessly mixed elements of R&B and hip-hop characterized by a haunting yet smooth tone resonating deeply with themes of celebration and sensuality The performance was a masterclass in emotion known for his infectious blend of soul and hip-hop continued to elevate the energy with a high-octane set and songs like ‘Love Riddim’ seemed to compel even the most reluctant audience members to their feet The interplay between his soulful vocals and rhythmic beats created a jubilant atmosphere luring the crowd into dance and revelry—a perfect precursor to what was to come Rounding out the lineup before Loyle Carner was the celebrated Ezra Collective a band renowned for their electrifying live shows and unique fusion of jazz influences with contemporary sounds The Collective’s vibrant performance sent shockwaves of excitement through the crowd as they skilfully blended intricate musicianship with infectious rhythms Their joyful interplay with the audience and their ability to create a community feel—a hallmark of jam sessions—transformed the festival space into a jubilant celebration of sound Playing fan favourites like ‘God Gave Me Feet For Dancing’ their jazz-inflected sound serving as an exhilarating final act before Carner took to the stage the festival had also seen standout performances by hip-hop icons like André 3000 and Nas André 3000 captivated the audience with his hypnotising flute-ship while Nas brought a masterclass in storytelling and lyrical prowess that resonated deeply with fans The combination of these legendary American acts with Ezra Collective’s dynamic sound created an engaging dialogue between London’s rich musical heritage and the broader tapestry of American culture This fusion was not only reflected in the diverse lineup but also in the festival's atmosphere celebrating the cross-pollination of influences that defines both parts of the world This cultural amalgamation set the stage for Loyle Carner to close out the event with his own signature style further bridging the gap between British and American sounds in a truly unforgettable experience As the sun began to set over Victoria Park exuding a blend of cool confidence and genuine warmth a track that beautifully showcases his lyrical prowess and reflective narratives drawn in by the sincerity that flows through his music It’s not just the mesmerizing rhythms that resonate; it's the tales of vulnerability and the search for identity that lay beneath Carner’s intricate verses and his passionate delivery held the audience spellbound What sets Loyle Carner apart from many performers is his ability to create a space of intimacy amidst the grandeur of a festival He took time between tracks to engage with the audience sharing relatable anecdotes about his upbringing and the importance of mental health—a theme that threads through much of his work Such moments of connection between artist and audience set the stage for a performance that felt personal rather than a mere showcase Theme of community resonated throughout the day Loyle Carner made it clear that his platform was not just for entertainment; it was also about advocating for mental health awareness and the significance of having a strong support system he encouraged audience members to check in on their friends and loved ones—words that resonated deeply within the crowd echoed the importance of fostering connections and encouraging open conversations about mental wellness particularly his mother and the complexities within those relationships Carner wove personal narratives into the collective experience His heartfelt song ‘Angel’ a touching detail of his London upbringing to serve as a reminder that vulnerability can be a bridge that connects us turning individual pain into a collective understanding Carner’s range shone through the carefully curated setlist He deftly transitioned from upbeat tracks that sent the crowd into dance to more sombre contemplative pieces that inspired a reflective hush This ability to navigate diverse genres with finesse is one of Carner’s defining attributes produced a sound that felt both fresh and authentically his own The inclusion of live instrumentation added a rich layer to the performance allowing Carner to engage with the audience in a way that pre-recorded music often fails to achieve The synergy between Carner’s band and himself was palpable creating an atmosphere that felt both electric and intimate—a rare feat in the expansive setting of a large festival moments from Loyle Carner's performance crystallized into memories poised to linger long after the final notes faded into the night The exhilarating encore performance of ‘Ottolenghi’ left the crowd buzzing with energy prompting a unified chant that resonated heartily across Victoria Park This thrilling experience encapsulated the essence of what music truly represents: forging connections whether with an artist or within a vibrant crowd His closing remarks reflected appreciation for the communal support he often felt in his home city underscoring the role of music in nurturing connections and uplifting one another It was a reminder of the critical nature of authenticity in an industry often dominated by superficiality Loyle Carner's performance at All Points East 2024 was more than just a concert; it was a heartfelt celebration of shared experiences and the profound sense of community fostered by music His ability to weave personal narratives with broader social themes created a resonance that echoed deeply with the audience Coupled with the brilliant performances from Navy Blue,Sainté the festival morphed into a rich tapestry of sounds and stories emphasizing the transformative power of music As the festival closed its doors for another year it became clear that Loyle Carner had left an indelible mark—an experience of profound connection and emotion that would linger in the hearts of those present long after the final curtain call Words by Laura MaxwellPhoto Credits: Sharon Lopez A legendary conglomeration of indie’s best make for one of All Points East’s most iconic lineups to date Victoria Park’s crown gates opened for an influx of indie fanatics for a jam-packed day of swooning and smiling The calm chit-chattering of guests and the vibrant blend of scents from the various vendors formed the warm atmosphere of All Points East 2024 Guests were welcomed with a clear blue sky to East London’s greatest public park turned live music venue Victoria Park was transformed into a carnival of celebration for the current titans of the indie music genre Upon initial entry to the festival, you feel the electric pull towards the looming arches above the BBC 6 Music Stage, where you find a collection of pink balaclavas grooving behind a DJ deck. Without another thought, your feet begin to move to the beat, then your head, and then your arms join the dance. This was NOT BAD FOR A GIRL a group of female and gender non-conforming DJs based in Manchester Despite the sparse crowd of the beginnings of the day the troupe proved incredibly skilled artists and riled up excitement amongst those listening With seamless transitions between funky fresh tunes (including the theme song for the N64 game ‘Buck Bumble’ NOT BAD FOR A GIRL’s DJ set spurred excitement for a day full of music whilst simultaneously providing great exposure to genres within DJing and their empowering collective.  Strawberry Guy’s set brought the first few tears of the day His soulful music and heartfelt lyrics radiated across the field and between the bodies of the crowd Alex played with a constant smile on his face and took moments to gaze across the faces of the crowd saying “Life is crazy and dreams can come true” The sunrays persisted and welcomed Lucius immediately after who emerged onto the stage with ringing cowbells Frontwomen Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig took centre stage in funky boxy 3D-esque glasses and performed energetic tracks on matching synths and an array of percussion instruments Their bandmates backed their showmanship feverishly making for an entertaining experimentation with the vast alternative/indie genre the band suffered from a momentary power outage but smoothly improvised with the crowd’s support; utilising the crowd themselves the band orchestrated us to clap to their rhythm and reinvigorate their sound with great success and amusement Perhaps the second most-anticipated artist of the day bar Mitski, of course, was Ethel Cain who has become a widespread phenomenon amongst indie fans worldwide Her personal style of alternative/indie features grungy midwestern guitars and solemn vocals She is known best for her focus on religious trauma and for her ghostly stage presence All Points East was brought to a hush as she appeared onstage adorning black leather gloves and backed by various VHS-style photos of rivers and fields as if enforcing a transportation into the American country Her vocals are famously a mixture of angelic and demonic and helped to take the crowd into a totally different world The utterly heart-wrenching vocals were matched by equally compelling instrumentals by incredibly talented musicians who shared Ethel’s sense of trauma; Her haunting restrained vocals matched perfectly with droning basslines and thrumming drummer Bryan De Leon was a standout for his emotional performance and striking facial expressions following a couple of problems in the crowd due to the heat that time slowed and Ethel comfortably perched on the edge of the stage to play a harmonica With a beautiful guitar solo and practically a breakdown to close this track stood out as an explosion of emotion via musical expertise and promoted harmony unity and understanding across the festival Moving out of the sun momentarily, fans traversed to the Cupra North Arena, spilling out and clambering between one another to catch a glimpse of Suki Waterhouse’s afternoon set Suki practically floated back and forth across the stage in her flowing white shirt and riled up a mighty karaoke with her fans and casual onlookers alike The attendance for her set was surprisingly immense proving her to be far more popular than initially expected Suki said “This is so unbelievably special” and led fans through an abundance of song and dance Following Suki’s set, there was a sudden swarm of movement back over to the East Stage. And, by looking at the expressions on fans' faces, there could have only been one artist playing: Beabadoobee Beloved indie artist and passionate guitar player beabadoobee amassed a phenomenal crowd of eager fans matching the eagerness of her adoring fans She played with ease and finesse through fan favourites and provided a heartwarming performance Taking our first trip over to West Stage, some fans enjoyed watching the sunset to the gentle melodies of Men I Trust With the sun lowering in the sky and the cold evening breeze setting in Men I Trust’s synthwave gentleness and nostalgic warmth was perfectly timed They transitioned seamlessly through a symphony of back to back tracks for a crowd of hearty fans and attendees (like myself) struck by the heat and pausing the party to sit and appreciate one another and the wonder of music To kickstart the evening, we returned to the Cupra North Arena to witness the fantastic performance of Arlo Parks who started a true party with her blends of indie sounds and R&B staples With committed fans and fellow enthusiasts this set was invigorating after a momentary calm Arlo Parks’ grooves were addictive and contagious her hometown) always feel like a homecoming” The highly anticipated TV Girl set  summoned practically the entirety of the festival’s attendants to the West Stage Brad Petering was equipped with a distortion box and a pair of round black sunglasses and brought the energy of a wannabe Alex Turner His vocals were the staple melancholic vibe of TV Girl’s style and were paired with instrumental madness Petering enjoyed experimenting with his soundboard and the backup singers provided endearing choreography With a setlist described by Petering as “scientifically determined to be entertaining” It cannot be denied that throughout the entirety of the day there was a constant air of anticipation and excitement for the final act. In the darkness of the August eve, the buzz of the hushed crowd, left waiting in the hum of the lowered stage lights, eyes glued to the stage. Sauntering onstage with a fresh pixie cut, Mitski’s presence was instantly hypnotic Her set was clearly curated delicately and purposefully; each individual movement music note and lighting choice was perfectly set to create an atmospheric Known for her unusual and intriguing stage presence Mitski’s true charm and adorable persona shone through between songs Despite the literal thousands of people before her she spoke to us with such comfort and commonality and looked upon us with utter warmth and love in her eyes ensuring to take care of fans by instructing a miniature stretch class Words by Erin HillPhotography by Sam Strutt Toronto's very own soul star delight Tanika Charles shares the video for new track 'Talk To Me Nice' - the third single to taken from her upcoming album 'Reasons To Stay'. The first day of All Point East’s closing weekend sees LCD Soundsystem returning to Victoria Park six years after headlining the inaugural festival back in 2018 The Brooklyn group’s core influences of punk and electronica both get their time in the sun during a day which spans both genre and eras with aplomb Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard attracts the first sizeable crowd of the day as the producer delivers melodic dance tracks to a sweaty North Arena tent Lively visuals and bone-fide bangers such as ‘Gabriel’ set the wheels in motion for the day with album collaborator Findia joining Goddard to provide vocals for both ‘Destiny’ and ‘When You Call’ given LCD’s connection with Hot Chip (the two bands share the services of multi-instrumentalist Al Doyle) but it’s a performance which undoubtedly sets a high bar for the day ahead Jockstrap take to the Main (or East) Stage late in the afternoon for a triumphant forty minute appearance which more than justifies their prominent position on the lineup. The duo’s avant production and wonky song structures have taken on a life of their own since the release of their long-awaited 2022 debut ‘I Love You, Jennifer B’ with ‘Concrete Over Water’’s violin bridge and ‘Glasgow’’s acoustic country chords (both performed by vocalist Georgia Ellery) tessellating seamlessly with Taylor Skye’s glitchy electronics Ellery briefly leaves the stage to re-appear in metre-tall mechanical legs for ‘50/50’ before Skye’s earnest outro on the mic - in which he thanks the audience for coming to their set from beneath his auburn hair-metal wig - is met with overwhelming love from the East London crowd Transitioning from one of the festival circuit’s most exciting new acts over to legends of the game, next Pixies take to the stage with a stacked setlist which sees ‘Wave of Mutilation’ ‘Hey’ and ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven’ all appearing early in their tenure ‘Here Comes Your Man’ and ‘Where Is My Mind?’ incur rapturous singalongs from a headline-sized audience as guitarist Joey Santiago asserts his position as one of the most influential in the genre; during the Boston group’s showing he crafts solos via the feedback from an unplugged guitar lead and even uses the peak of his cap to shred instrumental bridges Prior to LCD Soundsystem’s headline performance, Jai Paul closes the festival’s West Stage in an emotional homecoming Having disappeared from the public eye as a buzzy newcomer in 2013 following the online leak of his debut album Paul finally re-emerged in 2023 to a patient worldwide fanbase who were only too happy to welcome him back A stellar showing at last year’s Coachella and two sold out shows at London’s Outernet marked one of year’s most heartwarming headlines with a pre-headline slot at Victoria Park making for the perfect new chapter Jai opens his set with a cover of Big Boi’s ‘Higher Res’ before dropping a crowd-pleasing rendition of ‘He’ The stage configuration lives up to the grandiosity of the occasion with Paul’s live group spread around a large stone structure and screen visuals which resemble a chain reaction in a firework factory “My parents are here tonight,” Jai announces in a rare piece of dialogue before the intro to ‘Str8 Outta Mumbai’ ignites every corner of the audience in a jubilant end to the show The stampede of revellers between the site's West and East stages in the moments prior to the day’s closing set highlights a flaw in the event’s itinerary which festival owners AEG Presents have had ample opportunity to address in recent years The ten minutes of chaos is quickly forgotten once LCD Soundsystem’s familiar stage setup - a square microphone and archive of classic synthesizers standing to attention beneath a mammoth disco ball - looms into view Opener ‘Us Vs Them’ shows the band wearing their Talking Heads influence on their sleeve before hitting their stride with a killer five song run: ‘You Wanted A Hit’ Frontman James Murphy addresses the Victoria Park faithful to dedicate 2007’s ‘Someone Great’ to musician and band affiliate Justin Chearno before exchanging a tearful embrace with Nancy Whang from behind a keyboard A setlist of long tracks played in full will always threaten to alienate casual fans but – for the initiated - LCD’s two hour stretch is near faultless effervescent melodies and the heart-on-sleeve sentimentality of Murphy’s lyrics coalesce to produce a serotonin-inducing cocktail which even the chattiest of punters at the back of the vast crowd would struggle to deny for which All Points East have become notorious although quiet spots still persist in patches complete their set on a hat-trick of ‘Dance Yrself Clean’ and the inimitable coming-of-age romance of ‘All My Friends’ APE’s eye for curating outstanding lineups prevails to make for an event which rises above its flaws and presents a closing weekend to a summer well spent Their last stint at the iconic venue was back in 2022 It's the group's first new music since 2017… Album Review It’s when the pattern deviates somewhat from the expected that it's most exciting Interview Four decades in and Pixies remain one of the most consistent 'The Night The Zombies Came' is another choice collection to add to their arsenal - with Black Francis their truly one-of-a-kind ringleader… Subscribe here to receive regular updates from DIY on all things festivals Latest Issue April 2025 projects from the past few years are listed below In 2023 the Town of Victoria Park endorsed the Uluru Statement of the Heart and the associated Voice to Parliament This was an important milestone on the Town’s reconciliation journey and the result of the referendum does not change the Town's commitment to reconciliation The Town launched its Community Engagement period for the new Innovate RAP in May 2022 To raise awareness and invite informal and fun community participation the Town worked with the Vic Park’s Men Shed and Noongar Artist Julianna Wade to create a Community Wishing Well This beautiful Well travelled around the Town during a six-week period and in the process gathered the Community’s wishes for reconciliation In 2022 the Town worked with Noongar Yamatji Artist Darryl Bellotti to wrap Ranger vehicles in artwork that depicts the journey of Aboriginal people through the Victoria Park area and the iconic flora and fauna that has always accompanied their journey This artwork has now also been incorporated into the uniforms for the Parking and Rangers staff.  In partnership with Main Roads WA and Whadjuk/Ballardong Noongar artist Jade Dolman a series of traffic control boxes were painted across the Town Dolman painted the boxes to highlight the land where her ancestors have practiced their culture on for thousands of years The artworks represent the significance of this area to her family and to Beelu Noongars as a crossing and place on the Waugyl’s journey.  to celebrate National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC week the Town worked with Boss Arts Creative’s choreographers and dancers to coordinate and run two flashmob events in the Town Community members were taught by Noongar Bangarra dancer Michael Smith and the dance sequence was choreographed to the Song of the Kwoolark (Bull-shark) written by Noongar ethnomusicologist Dr Clinton Bracknell Dancers surprised and delighted patrons at the Vic Park Markets and the Vic Park RSL with their performances During National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC week in 2022 the Town worked with Choirmaster and singer Della Rae Morrisson to form a community choir to sing Noongar songs in language This culminated with a Community Choir performance at the Vic Park RSL hall This was an incredibly enriching experience for all participants who learned about Noongar culture This artwork by Noongar artist Darryl Bellotti was installed for National Reconciliation Week at Bidi Walk in East Victoria Park in 2022.  The community were invited to attend the launch of the artwork and share a cultural offering of food and music In 2021 and 2022 the Town worked with the Mindeera Advisory group to co-design a reforestation and yarning circle space in the Jirdarup Bushland This is an important space of gathering and learning about Whadjuk Noongar Boodja.  Residents of the Town learned about the significance of caring for country from Noongar Elder Simon Forrest and language teacher Dylan Collard during a NAIDOC week Walk on Country.  East Victoria Park is probably not on your radar as one of the most “fabulous” places in Perth “[When we were in the planning stage] there [were] no queer venues outside of Northbridge and there are not a lot of queer venues that aren’t nightclubs,” venue manager Annalise Kelly tells Broadsheet “So there was a demand for a small bar where you could catch up with friends for lunch and East Vic Park was the perfect home for it.” Kelly and assistant venue manager Bety Salomiu’s shared vision extends from the menu to the interior design The bar’s decor – olive green walls with industrial dark wood exposed brick and black accents – is arguably not what you would expect in a queer bar but Make sure you're subscribed to our newsletter today In steering away from the traditional queer bar decor that is seen in much-loved local venues such as The Court the duo are carving out a niche in the Perth queer bar scene the more you realise this is absolutely a queer venue,” says Kelly pointing to disco balls and artworks depicting RuPaul and Freddie Mercury Kelly and Salomiu have taken a careful approach [as] the Albany Highway strip has amazing food,” Kelly says So in order not to compete with these existing venues Parq is keeping things simple with a small menu Think retro-inspired prawn cocktail; chorizo and scallops; and eye fillet crostini There is also a pizza oven – a hangover from the venue’s former life as Little C’s pizzeria – which the team also intends to put to use “It’s been my dream to write a cocktail menu like this There are nearly 40 classic cocktails and mocktails on the menu signature cocktails that are a bit more extravagant.” when two drag queens will perform on the venue’s stage from 9pm to 11pm There are also plans for boozy brunches and live music later in the year Salomiu sums up the bar’s ethos as follows: “Even if a venue doesn’t have rainbows and there’s more than one way to be a queer venue.” theparqbar.com.au A New App Fights Food Waste With Discounted Goods From Local Bakeries and Restaurants Deadbeat Brings Grunge and a Top Sydney Bartender to Perth’s CBD First West Perth’s Totally Rendang is one of a handful of restaurants bringing delicious delights to an otherwise rather culinarily sparse area – but we think they’d hold their own on any of Perth’s jam-packed hospo hotspots Dive into one of their nasi bungkus packed with rice Another one of Vic Park’s reliable faves, Bintang Cafe’s home-style cuisine will cure just about any Indo cravings – from classic nasi lemak to nourishing bakso campur or comforting bubur Jakarta – at wallet-friendly pricing Bintang also serves up an Indo-style breakfast for just $12 Coventry Village is a no-brainer when it comes to finding something delicious from every corner of the globe – and one of its most recent additions has been a welcome one Like many of the other stalls in the market Jagoan is both pint-sized and very low-key – but the flavours are as high-key as you can get Specialising in bakso and with some top-tier noodle game their concise menu leaves little room for disappointment Main works on the Mint/Beatty raised intersection have been completed pending signage and line-marking from Main Roads Works on the Mint/Hubert raised intersection are scheduled to commence soon - check back regularly for updates Archer St Improvement Stage 2 (Planet-Mars): Works commenced on Wednesday 26 February and will conclude before the end of the financial year Full-day closures are scheduled for the following days: the road will be pedestrian access only from 7am-5pm the section of Archer Street (Planet Street to Mars Street) will be partially open with one lane in operation and a detour in place for the other lane Effectively this results in the westbound lane for motorists travelling from Orrong Road to Shepperton Road remaining open to the passage of vehicles adjacent to the roadworks site We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience Further updates on traffic changes for the next stage of roadworks will be communicated in due course All businesses will remain open and accessible Parking at the rear of businesses will remain accessible.  Footpaths will remain open - we recommend parking at the Archer/Planet car park (#16) if you're heading to any of the businesses between Planet St and Mars St Archer and Mint streets form a central roadway linking Orrong Road with Albany Highway and connecting people to the Carlisle Town Centre East Victoria Park Primary School and East Victoria Park Town Centre In the Town’s draft Local Planning Strategy this corridor forms the western boundary of the Carlisle Station / Archer Street Precinct and connects to the Oats Street Precinct transit-orientated and mixed-use areas that capitalise on their proximity to Perth and the Albany Highway Centre community consultation (see Community Feedback tab below) revealed that priorities for the Archer/Mint Streetscape Improvement project should include creating a streetscape that improves walkability and vibrancy around local businesses while increasing shading and tree canopy coverage wherever possible.  These priorities informed the creation of several objectives for the design The Carlisle Town Centre includes the section of Archer St between Raleigh and Mars streets with the middle section of this area (between Planet and Bishopsgate streets) now updated via stage 1 works.  In addition to reshaping the streetscape to slow traffic speeds and improve the area for pedestrians the Town is also seeking to improve safety and access for alternative modes of transport.  The completed bike lane will improve access to and from the new Carlisle train station and surrounding public realm currently under construction by METRONET.  The Town is commited to increasing its tree canopy to 20% under its Urban Forest Strategy. In increasing canopy along Archer/Mint streets the Town seeks to reduce the urban heat island effect provide shade for visitors to the area and beautify the streetscape.  The map below shows the Town’s indicative approach to future upgrades as part of the Archer/Mint Streetscape Improvement project this staging of works is subject to change based on factors such as availability of resources cost pressures and endorsement of future works as part of the Town’s Long Term Financial Plan Spanning Bishopsgate Street to Planet Street this stage of the Archer/Mint Streetscape Improvement Plan is now complete and refers to general streetscape improvements made to the Carlisle Town Centre this stage of the protected bike lane planned for Archer and Mint streets is now complete The lane will eventually travel almost the entire length of Archer and Mint streets, improving the streetscape for alternative modes of transport in line with the Town’s Integrated Transport Strategy and allowing cyclists to feel safer when sharing the road with motorists The second stage of the protected bike lane stretches between Gemini Way and Star Street to connect with protected bike lane stage 1.  The landscaping design for Stage 2 is available from the document links at the bottom of this page.  This stage of the streetscape improvement works will extend the Carlisle Town Centre north to Mars Street The design of stage 2 will take its cues from stage 1 and aim to slow traffic speeds and make the town centre a more accessible and attractive space for pedestrians and alternative modes of transport The section of Archer Street (Planet Street to Mars Street) will be partially open Parking at the rear of businesses will remain accessible Stage 3 of the protected bike lane is anticipated to stretch from Raleigh Street to Hubert Street with construction expected to take place following the conclusion of METRONET works so the design can complement and respond to impending changes to the streetscape near the train line With the Armadale train line now shut, the State Government’s METRONET team has begun work to raise the train line. The team will also remove the level crossing at Mint Street and upgrade and move Carlisle train station closer to Mint Street. For more information on the METRONET project, click here This stage of the streetscape improvement works will extend the Carlisle Town Centre south to Raleigh Street The design of stage 3 will take its cues from stage 1 and 2 and aim to slow traffic speeds and make the town centre a more accessible and attractive space for pedestrians and alternative modes of transport.  The installation of raised crossings at the intersections of Mint St with Beatty Ave and Hubert Street will help to slow traffic and make the community safer especially on trips to and from the local primary school (East Vic Park Primary) Main works on the raised intersection have been completed Works on the raised intersection are scheduled to commence at the end of April The second stage of the Archer/Mint protected bike lanes is now at practical completion extending from Gemini Way to Star Street and connecting active transport users with the revitalised Carlisle Town Centre.  A future final stage of works is planned to complete the bike lane so that it stretches most of the length of Archer and Mint streets connecting users to amenities such as the new Carlisle train station and public realm The protected bike lane project is jointly funded by the Town and the Department of Transport.   see the Project Staging and FAQs tabs above The upgraded Carlisle Town Centre between Bishopsgate and Planet Streets is open We recommend taking a look around the area enjoying the new facilities and supporting the local businesses in the area.  Council endorsed a plan to reduce the scope of Stage 2 of the Town Centre improvement works in order to manage cost pressures the indicative plan for Stage 2 of the works sought to cover the sections of Archer St between Planet and Mars streets and Bishopsgate and Raleigh streets The latter section is now intended to take place under Stage 3 Town Centre works at a later date Completion of the improvement works between Planet and Mars streets will improve the connection between the Town Centre as it currently stands and the recently completed Stage 2 of the Protected Bike Lanes.  please view the map and information located under the 'Project Staging' tab above.  The planter boxes at the intersections with Planet and Bishopsgate streets were decorated with the illustrations of Matthew Wong who studied art at Curtin university and established himself as an illustrator and street artist in Perth before relocating to Melbourne His works have featured in high-profile place making projects in North Perth and Yagan Square His style is a mix of traditional illustration mixed with Asian-influenced street art.  normal access to businesses has been restored.  Why not drop in to one of our wonderful local businesses to show your support Below is a list of businesses along the newly refreshed stretch of Archer St and beyond The first designs (concept designs) for a street revitalization and consultation with the community was completed at the end of 2020 The process involved the Town appointing a multi-disciplinary team to prepare a concept design and staging plan based on site analysis community engagement and best practice transport planning and urban design The design process engaged with our community and included a community survey with 116 responses a pop-up engagement on Archer Street and one on one interviews with Town Officers and several businesses on Archer Street The community engagement refined the vision and objectives for the project building on the strategic outcomes outlined in the Town’s Strategic Community Plan.  This work culminated in a draft plan (see attached documents at the bottom of this page) which was endorsed by Council to proceed to public advertising at the 15 June 2020 Ordinary Council Meeting The public advertising period was conducted over a three-week period in June and July 2020 The Town received 75 submissions during the public comment period 72 submissions either supported the proposal or supported the proposal with some concerns There were three submissions that opposed the proposal The final Plan considered all aspects of the public land on the street including the road The Town has now completed Stage 1 works.  Further construction stages elsewhere along Archer St will be considered consistent with the limitations and considerations in the Long-Term Financial Plan Funding for this project is a mix of external funding and from the Town’s finances The project has considered the full length of Archer Street between Orrong Road and the train line as well as the full length of Mint Street between the train line and Albany highway.   it is important that we plan for the future to make sure our infrastructure can meet the needs of our current and future community With significant investment in rail and road infrastructure affecting the Town over the next 10 years we need to ensure our local main streets can cope with these changes and become thriving places to live In responding to rising cost pressures and limited access to construction resources the Town is opting to pursue construction of the Archer/Mint Streetscape Improvement works in stages This will also serve to lessen the impact of prolonged continuous works on businesses and surrounding residents and allow the upgrades to fit around the State Government’s improvements to the train line and surrounding public space under its METRONET project It is important to note that staging is indicative and is subject to change in line with a number of factors The State Government has begun removing the railway boom gates on Mint/Archer Street and will elevate the rail above the road This means the profile of the road will not change and won't impact the design significantly the METRONET works are likely to impact the timing of the final stage of construction for the protected bike lanes as this stage will cross over the train line near to the new Carlisle train station The Town will continue to work with METRONET to ensure the two projects are complementary of one another.  The planter boxes at both intersections have now been decorated with the art of Matthew Wong His style is a mix of traditional illustration mixed with Asian influenced street art.  The first two sections of the protected bike lane between Gemini Way and Star Street have been completed The construction comprises 2 median buffers landscaping and on-street ramps connecting to the footpath The bike lane project is jointly funded by the Town and the Department of Transport.   it is hoped the infrastructure will encourage more cyclists including those too scared to ride on the road to get out and about in the Carlisle Town Centre users should exercise appropriate caution when riding in the bike lanes and keep an eye out for other road users including those exiting their driveways. We're working on bringing you the rest of the lane as staging constraints allow allowing people using alternative modes of transport to safely ride to and from the new Carlisle train station and associated public realm Further landscaping as part of the recently completed stage 2 of the bike lanes include new turf and are designed to limit rubbish ingress to the bike lanes.  The finished bike lanes will not include raised bus stop treatments as per the recommendation of an independent road safety audit.  Some bus shelters will have to be moved as part of the wider bike lane works In light of the planned Carlisle train station upgrade and future bike lane stages The Public Transport Authority will rationalise the number and locations of bus stops along Archer Street to better serve users Further information on bus stop relocations will be available in due course.  Please email Hamlen Homes was approved to develop a $50 million urban village in Perth's East Victoria Park called East & Co before it folded. The village included 52 individually designed homes with surrounding amenities and attractions. It was to be located five kilometres from Perth's CBD. The company was also in the middle of building seven individual homes - all of which are now in limbo.  Some of those homes have reportedly been under construction for almost two years, prompting a series of complaints from frustrated owners. They allege that Hamlen Homes rarely responded to their questions, with administrative and sales employees from the firm being the only respondents to emails. One client filed legal action against the building company after no progress was made on the construction of their property in four months. Another man said Hamlen Homes had not worked on his unfinished home since July last year. In response to a complaint, the firm claimed there was a severe shortage of workers and materials available to complete those projects. It's understood building regulators received questions over Hamlen Home's financial state in the months leading up to the company's collapse. Dozens of construction businesses have collapsed across Australia over the past two years due to rising cost of building materials such as timber - exacerbated by the long Russia-Ukraine conflict - and labour shortages. At least 94 WA businesses went under between 2021 to 2022, according to data from ASIC.  Major terror attack 'was just HOURS away' before it was foiled by the special forces and police:...
