Lessons in Higher Education: California and Beyond Five years after Covid: Innovations that are driving results Arts education An Altadena family with four young children was awakened in the middle of the night by a firefighter’s urgent evacuation order They fled their house with little more than the pajamas on their backs When the family arrived at the evacuation shelter her greatest worry was whether her violin was going to be safe In the wake of the catastrophic Eaton fire that swept through Los Angeles in January Many of the students at Altadena Arts Magnet and Eliot Arts Magnet lost not only their houses but also their school and the cherished musical instruments stored in the band room.  losing an instrument can feel almost like losing a loved one That’s why it was so transformative when Guitar Center and Sony joined forces to put instruments back in the hands of these children “Children are particularly vulnerable, showing their fears through deep emotional responses to the upheaval,” said Natalie Jackson, executive director of the Harmony Project a group that gives low-income Los Angeles students access to free music education who have faced and continue to face immense hardship.” executive director of the Guitar Center Music Foundation An oboist who has been playing since she was 12 Miller believes music can be a balm for crushed spirits it’s an extension of our soul,” said Miller whose initiative received about 1,000 applications and has given away 450 instruments so far The Altadena music students have received about $200,000 worth “You can imagine when you’re in a situation like that and you lose everything that music is the one thing that’s constant in your life.” Music has been a guiding light for Karen Klages a music specialist for Pasadena Unified School District While her Altadena home was saved by neighbors heroically battling the flames with garden hoses the trauma still haunts her and her students A group of her music students banded together every day for three weeks to load and unload relief supplies “It’s been difficult for me personally and still is Seeing my whole town burn down has been a shock to the system,” she said sadly The arts have also been key to healing for Karen Anderson the arts and enrichment coordinator for the Pasadena Unified School District who has only now gotten back into her 1918 Altadena house slow process of repairing the damage from smoke soot and ash at her home while she tries to bring the sound of music back to the children “But we were able to leverage a lot of arts programming for well-being It’s super important to restore normalcy for children as quickly as possible We didn’t want families to worry about instruments Anderson has been bound and determined to replace a cavalcade of instruments That’s on top of the rock and mariachi instruments She also made a special effort to replace one of the arts teacher’s prized vintage guitars a beloved instrument Eric Gothold lost to the fires like the rest of his family’s earthly possessions ‘You have no idea how much this means to me.’ I felt like it was the least we could do,” she said Anderson is doing her best to help students regain their equilibrium while still coping with her own pain Like many of the district’s teachers she has been so focused on helping others that she hasn’t yet had time to fully digest her own feelings.  “I’m grateful that we still have a house “But there’s a period where you almost feel guilty Klages says that knowing that people care is helping the student community beat back the grief of coping with so much destruction “It’s all part of the healing process everyone is still in a state of shock over so much loss,” she said “There are rallying cries coming in from everywhere The deep emotional reward of helping people in dire straits is something Miller knows well but helping these children transcend their tragedy has been particularly touching for all involved who usually just ships gifts out to recipients broke with tradition and met with a group of students at the Pasadena Guitar Center store to hand them their new instruments.  “There’s really nothing like that experience,” she said It was really cool for them to meet all the other people in the same boat as them and for me just to see all their faces light up may bring the children and their families a note of optimism amid the ashes “Donors are giving students back not only their instruments,” said Jackson and a sense of hope that resonates beyond the music room.”  We are committed to keeping you Many school district contracts regarding school resource officers don’t detail officers’ role in routine disciplinary matters. There are at least two ongoing court cases involving allegations of sexual misconduct against former school resource officers in California. Many districts pay millions each year to put officers on campuses with little oversight from school boards. It can be a big challenge to pay for resource officers. among older adults some researchers are betting on social robots to fill the gaps designed by a University of Denver professor has been making the rounds of retirement homes in the Denver area to see if it improves the quality of life for residents Ryan has been living in 76-year-old Ross Argabrite’s room at Eaton Senior Communities in Lakewood said he spends a lot of time alone on his couch and appreciates Ryan’s company in particular the robot’s ability to provide an array of corny jokes upon request which never fails to induce a hearty laugh from Argabrite The robot is more human-like than an Amazon Alexa The robot is able to recognize Argabrite’s voice He provides me with some entertainment,” said Argabrite He allows me the opportunity to develop a conversation.” The robot has a touchscreen embedded in its torso so Argabrite can use it to watch videos select music and play games like Wheel of Fortune Ryan will do practical things like give Argabrite a local weather report if prompted the robot will greet Argabrite in the morning ask about his day and will attempt to offer human-like responses.  The brainchild behind Ryan is Mohammad Mahoor a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Denver Mahoor said the robot is designed to be entertaining and educational it’s programmed to respond to people’s emotions if I tell Ryan that I lost my cat or something is going on in my life,” Mahoor said [ask] ‘What’s going on and how can I help?’” as evidenced downstairs at the retirement home where an identical version of Ryan is talking to a handful of residents seated in a semi-circle around the robot it tells them to sit in an upright position with a tall spine and uses its arms to demonstrate different exercises resident Steve Auten gave the yoga session good reviews and said he has a special place in his heart for Ryan who stayed in Auten’s room at Eaton for a couple of months.  “We talked a lot and we did a lot of things and we played games,” Auten said Steve’ and then ‘Good Evening.’ He was very polite.” director of Wellness Initiatives at Eaton Senior Communities Katie had mild dementia and depression and Ryan helped by reminding her to take her medications and go to therapy “Katie was so much happier with Ryan,” Schoeder said “She loved to share the stories of their conversations She would dress him up with scarves and hats and Bronco equipment It was really Katie’s experience that made me understand that this technology was very special and very much needed.” she sees Ryan as an extra hand – so to speak – given the current shortage of workers in senior care facilities “I don't see Ryan replacing me as a medical professional,” Schoeder said “He's just allowing me to do my job and do it better because I now have someone that can help.” “I think it’s a little bit slow,” said Varga “I ask him a question and then I don't know if he's going to answer or not And then when I start to ask another question smarter version of Ryan – the 4th iteration – based on feedback from residents and workers He said the next Ryan will have a new chatbot to make it a better Mahoor hopes one day robots will be a fixture in level a couple of years ago, Central District young gun Sophie Eaton has remained a top prospect in the 2025 AFLW Draft having impressed as a bottom-ager for South Australia last season and earning a spot in the National Academy She kicks off a podium of stars who could be in any order DOB: 23/04/2007Height: 170cmPosition: Wing/MidfielderClub: Central District A naturally gifted player who started her career as a forward before moving onto the wing for Central District Eaton has also spent time through the middle which is a role she expects to play – with a wing rotation – for the Croweaters at the National Championships Not a big bodied player compared to others Eaton is able to dominate the opposition with her ball use and movement through traffic extracting it via handball receive or working into space to run and gun Eaton’s ball use is a delight to watch with her skill and decision making going hand-in-hand hit those 45-degree kicks and open up the game in doing so Her ability to find pockets of space around the ground then set up her teammates is a strength and she is the type of player you want with ball in hand streaming forward looking for a target inside 50 she can pop up and hit the scoreboard cleverly and has the composure with plays on the run to only need a moment to straighten up and put one through the big sticks Long-term she looms as that inside-outside midfielder who can rotate forward with more time building up strength and her contested work likely to be on the horizon Eaton is classy with a capital ‘C’ and regardless of where she plays With the class Eaton took the opportunity to go inside for Central District in the opening round of the SANFL Women’s successfully making her progression from a wing/forward rotation While Eaton is not necessarily known for her inside craft having a lighter body it is an area that she is looking to build on with her stoppage smarts and general understanding of the game already elite She uses the ball so well and has superb vision with all those traits on display in the Bulldogs’ big win over Glenelg DOB: 23/04/2007Height: 170cmPosition: MidfielderStrengths: Foot skills 2025 SANFL Women’s – Round 1:Central District 7.10 (52) defeated Glenelg 3.3 (21) #12 Sophie Eaton (Central District)Stats: 25 disposals As earmarked leading into the opening round by coach Ben Hunt, Eaton started on-ball and would be amongst the most used combination with Jovanka Zecevic and Caitlen Teague with Shelby Smith in retirement Her first major touch came at the two-minute mark when she used a lovely sidestep to get around an opponent wrong foot them and kick deep inside 50 to a contest and though Central had only kicked three behinds to the first break Eaton was getting busy with her impact forward of centre often using quick and clean hands around the stoppage or getting to the outside Only one of her disposals in the first quarter was a turnover with Eaton almost always picking the right option at the very least Eaton got her hands on the ball two minutes in on the defensive side of the wing and put it forward to a teammate’s advantage She continued to be ultra clean at ground level with a one-take approach that allowed her to open up opportunities for her teammates both through midfield and around the ground Eaton took a great mark at half-forward in the seventh minute and took another grab a couple of minutes later on the wing While many players would dump the kick long down the line to the safety of the boundary in the case that their teammate lost a contest Eaton spotted a target in the corridor and nailed the short pass Though Eaton did make a mistake by hand midway through the quarter after a mark at half-back trying to keep the ball moving she remained vigilant and forced a turnover to win the ball back for her side burst forward and produced a pinpooint pass inside 50 Her classy touches would result in a number of score involvements and while she might have had more touches in the first two quarters Eaton had the pill at half-back and again rather than letting the clock run down and go to the boundary looked inside and hit up a target in the middle of the ground to open the fat side with the Dogs leading by as much as seven goals late in that quarter and held a 35-point lead at the last change Eaton was the prime mover through the midfield with her disposal slicing up the Glenelg defensive zones While the fourth term was a little more scrappy in general with Glenelg able to stem the bleeding and even cut the final margin to 31 points Eaton still had a few nice touches to finish off her day She once again started on-ball though her best work was done midway through the quarter In the 12th minute she scooped up a loose ball at speed and dished off the handball quickly at half-forward Shortly after she kept the pressure high on the Glenelg defence with a deep kick bouncing towards goal but the Bays’ defence got back to rush it through and deny Eaton a major Eaton picked up a few successive handballs in a transitional play on the outside able to pad up some more numbers on her way to a team-high 25 disposals and a standout performance in the red Sophie Eaton has the opportunity to step up and be a key midfielder not just at Central District but for the South Australian state team as well While there will be others doing the grunt work possessing that touch of class and spatial awareness that is often referred to in football circles as mirroring Scott Pendlebury Eaton is so quick with her thinking that she can leave opponents in her wake and that sidestep she uses to get around would-be tacklers buys her extra time for decision making Eaton is still developing her inside work but she showed she will put in the defensive effort laying six tackles for the match among her three clearances Eaton is best utilised as that second possession winner Given her Central District teammates in Zecevic and Teague are both strong first possession winners it enables the top-ager to receive the ball and then distribute it effectively both through and away from traffic It will be fascinating to see how far she can take her game in 2025 as one of the most skilful and exciting players A CLEVER and hard-running midfielder-forward Marlo Graham has a well-balanced game that has gone to another level in 2025 The top-age talent captained one of the Under 17 Futures sides at GMHBA Stadium last season and has not put a foot wrong as one of the vice-captains of the Northern Knights not to be mistaken for the Australian cricketer nicknamed ‘Bison’ The athletic aerialist has been a shining light for the Bloods across the last two seasons and is the club’s sole state academy representative in 2025 the 189cm marking target has booted 12 goals in […] HARD-WORKING North Adelaide midfielder Ben Francou delivered another standout performance in Round 6 of the SANFL Under 18 season starring in a gutsy six-point win over Central Between 4,000 and 5,000 buildings and vehicles are believed to have burned in the Eaton fire Chief Crowley said the number of properties damaged or destroyed by the Palisades fire was "in the thousands" "It is safe to say that the Palisades fire is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of Los Angeles," she said The fires could also be the costliest in US history JPMorgan analyst Jimmy Bhullar estimated the total economic loss at close to $US50 billion ($80 billion) making it difficult to breathe in affected areas giving authorities hope they could begin to contain the blazes The National Weather Service warned high winds on Friday would create an "increased risk of rapid fire spread and extreme fire behaviour" Officials said the forward progress of the Kenneth fire to the city's west was stopped on Thursday evening with 400 firefighters remaining on the scene throughout the night to monitor the fire Evacuation orders were lifted in the region near the Hurst fire in the city's north with residents allowed to return to their homes as authorities began to contain the fire The death toll from the multiple fires across Los Angeles has increased to 10 according to the LA County Medical Examiner It confirmed it received notification of 10 fire-related deaths as of 9pm Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said cadaver dogs and crews were currently searching through rubble in areas destroyed by wildfires It comes after reports a man and his son died in the suburb of Altadena where homes have been destroyed by the nearby Eaton fire looks for belongings along with his stepfather after the Eaton Fire burns in Altadena A man searches though his destroyed home after the Eaton Fire and Anderson Hao hold each other in front of their destroyed home were waiting for an ambulance to come for them Mr Mitchell's daughter Hajime White said "they didn't make it out" She said authorities told the family Mr Mitchell was found by the side of his son's bed in Altadena "He was not going to leave his son behind It's like a ton of bricks just fell on me." Resident Victor Shaw was also found dead after he stayed behind to try to fight the Eaton fire He was later found holding a garden hose in his hand after the blaze swept through his neighbourhood Shari Shaw told news outlet KTLA she tried to get him to evacuate earlier this week but he said he wanted to stay behind and try to fight the fire "When I went back in and yelled out his name and I had to get out because the embers were so big and flying like a firestorm — I had to save myself," she said and the house was starting to go up in flames died in his bed after staying behind because he felt that he would be okay waiting it out at home Ms Nickerson said her father had experienced his fair share of fires over the decades and he said that he was going to gather up his stuff but he said he was going to stay here too … he said that he felt this was going to pass over and that he would be here," she said But extreme winds and tinder-dry conditions helped fuel them and dry fire hydrants in some areas created difficulties fighting them President Joe Biden said wildfire agency Cal Fire had cut power to prevent more fires being started by downed power lines But that had stopped water pumps supplying hydrants "Cal Fire is bringing in generators to get these pumps up and working again so that there's no longer a shortage of water coming out of these hydrants," Mr Biden said He said another 400 federal firefighters and 30 firefighting aircraft would be deployed and more resources were coming from Canada The federal government will fund the recovery for 180 days Some residents are nervous that incoming president Donald Trump a critic of the state's Democratic leaders Mr Biden said he would "pray to god" that he did not "I think Trump would leave us swinging in the wind," resident Cindy Sullivan told the ABC in Altadena "He's already expressed that this is our Governor [Gavin] Newsom's fault and … that California creates its own problems." an Australian now living in Altadena with her family She said many LA residents were angry at the city's lack of preparedness "We pay the highest taxes of many of the states in America so to not see those taxes be put towards things that are prevention measures to make sure that our houses don't burn down in the way that they have so quickly is really disappointing," she told the ABC "And I don't know if pointing fingers and blaming is the right thing to do but there's so many people that are just devastated right now." Business Edison generates billions of dollars in revenue every year and has a history of passing along the costs of disasters to customers How will it handle the financial fallout of the Eaton fire remains an open question But Edison’s investigation into the start of the fire has not revealed any other possible sources of ignition “Absent additional evidence” and “in light of pending litigation it is probable that Edison International and Southern California Edison will incur material losses in connection with the Eaton fire,” Pizarro said But Tuesday’s comments are the clearest signal to date that the company is likely to sustain substantial losses from the devastating wildfire. “It’s still very early days here and the liability is simply not estimable today,” Pizarro said. “I’m not sure when it may become estimable.” California unconnected transmission line somehow reengerized on Jan 7 is now “a leading hypothesis” for what started the destructive Eaton fire is an investor-owned public utility that provides electricity to about 15 million people across a 50,000-square-mile area in Southern California which is one of the largest in the country Edison International owns an energy advisory company Electric transmission lines connect to Southern California Edison’s Vincent Substation in Palmdale (Gary Coronado / Los Angeles Times) In all Edison International employs more than 14,000 people and had a valuation of around $30 billion before January’s wildfires The company’s valuation closed Tuesday at $22.6 billion If Edison has to cover the damage caused by the Eaton fire, the utility will be partially protected by an emergency fund that state lawmakers created in 2019 in the wake of earlier wildfires The fund is designed to protect utility companies from bankruptcy in the event that the utility is found responsible for a wildfire and has to make a large payout Climate & Environment State regulators criticized Southern California Edison for falling behind in inspecting transmission lines in areas at high risk of wildfires just months before the deadly Eaton fire, according to state documents. “Unlike when we were dealing with TKM and Woolsey, we have the wildfire fund that we will be accessing,” Edison International Chief Financial Officer Maria Rigatti said on Tuesday, referring to previous wildfires tied to Edison’s equipment. The emergency fund is supposed to cover up to $21 billion in damages on behalf of a utility company but had amassed only $14.7 billion as of December 2024. Under state law, a utility does not have to reimburse the wildfire fund after using it to cover damages if a review finds it acted prudently to prevent a fire, such as by shutting down power to transmission lines amid high winds. But if Edison is found to have been imprudent, it will have to pay back $4 billion to the fund. “Based on everything we know today and the information that we’ve reviewed, we believe that Southern California Edison will make a good-faith showing that it was prudent,” Rigatti said. On Tuesday, Edison International reported first-quarter net income of $1.4 billion and earnings per share of $1.37, up from $1.13 a year earlier. Shares closed at $58.73 on Tuesday, about half a percent higher and down 26% so far this year. tens of thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate and thousands of properties have been destroyed The exact number of homes lost is unclear as the fires continue to burn near some of the city’s areas As Los Angeles braces for another night of destruction That’s the end of our live coverage for this evening We’ll be back in the morning with more live coverage of this major US disaster The majority of the evacuation zone set up for the Sunset fire has been lifted, according to the LA fire department.  the LAFD issued a statement to say the evacuation zone had been lifted The area will be closed overnight due to LAFD operations ensuring no flare-ups in the vegetation surrounding these streets “Residents are asked to be cautious when returning to their homes because firefighters are continuing to work in their neighbourhoods.” The evacuation zone had included some iconic LA landmarks The Santa Monica council has imposed a sunset-to-sunrise curfew in a bid to keep roads and public areas clear for emergency services personnel City manager David White said in a statement the measure was rolled out to support law enforcement efforts in the mandatory evacuation zones “The Palisades fire is currently impacting neighbourhoods in the northern part of Santa Monica with approximately 2472 households under a mandatory evacuation order within the city of Santa Monica and 8338 under a voluntary evacuation warning,” mayor Lana Negrete said “This emergency order further assists our first responders and further protects residents as we weather this regional crisis and People hectares upending life in America’s second-largest city and thousands of displaced residents searched for hotel space or sought shelter from friends and family The intense winds that have fuelled the LA wildfires are easing overnight but firefighters will still face challenging conditions in the days ahead The National Weather Service said winds over the Eaton fire would ease Wednesday night through to Thursday morning (Friday AEDT) but could increase again on Thursday afternoon and evening into Friday morning (Saturday AEDT) “Winds will likely vary significantly between higher terrain and the lower elevations of the fire as the area is sheltered from the northeast,” the service said Gusts of up to 80km/h could “sporadically” affect some valleys while dry conditions would continue over the coming days Winds on Wednesday morning local time were gusting between 95 and 130km/h wind-driven fires broke out on Tuesday in the Los Angeles area Mayor Karen Bass was on the other side of from some Angelenos Many said there was insufficient warning from officials about the likelihood of devastating fires even as weather forecasts predicted extreme danger this week the National Weather Service in Los Angeles had begun warning of “extreme fire weather conditions.” By Sunday the warnings had become even more dire – “rapid fire growth and extreme behaviour with any fire starts.” But Bass posted her first warning on social platform X about the windstorm on Monday Her office did not send out a news release about fire risk until nearly 11am Tuesday morning after the blaze in Pacific
