Jayden Stewardson had given Magic the lead in the first half after he sliced the ball past goalkeeper Ben Kennedy. But the Jaffas struck back in the 78th minute with a strike from substitute Bailey Newton before securing the win through Bond in the 92nd minute. Edgeworth beat Newcastle Olympic 1-0 at Darling Street Oval on Wednesday night thanks to a 22nd minute goal from Ryan Feutz. The cane toad was easily identifiable due to its size Dr Earl said a cane toad has enough toxin to kill an adult dog in less than 30 minutes and while toxicity in cats is less frequent it can occur they only have to pick them up and stress the frog enough for it to exude its gel," she said "The first thing people will typically see is a really profuse salivation and dogs typically become really frantic and it affects the central nervous system so they go into seizures coma and progress on to death pretty quickly." Signs to look out for include hypersalivation Dr Earl said there is no antidote for the toxin but vets can provide supportive care to the affected animal She encouraged members of the public to bring suspected cane toads to their local vet to be sure they have identified the species correctly before it is euthanised we always want to make sure that we're treating the animal humanely," she said A NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) spokeswoman said the cane toad was reported to its Invasive Species Biosecurity Team The spokeswoman said staff spoke with the finder of the cane toad and gave advice to ensure its appropriate management including surrendering the toad to the local vet as soon as possible "Following surrender and identification of the cane toad by the veterinarian it was humanely euthanised," she said "Cane toads have been present in parts of north-eastern NSW since 1965 and have proven difficult to eradicate using available control tools and techniques due in part to the long-term commitment of the NSW community toward managing cane toads natural dispersal of the species from the area has been limited." The spokeswoman said the majority of the state is free of cane toads but long-distance dispersal can happen when cane toads stow away on vehicles and in produce like firewood "In cases where there has been a long-distance dispersal of cane toads NSW has a good history of investigating and implementing local cane toad management programs where necessary," she said The number of cane toad reports made to DPIRD vary seasonally During warmer months DPIRD can receive between five and 20 suspected cane toad reports per week from across cane toad-free parts of NSW Cane toads pose a range of biosecurity risks for the economy including competing with native fauna for food and disrupting natural ecosystems Members of the community are encouraged to catch cane toads instead of harming them as they may actually be a native frog DPIRD recommends wearing protective clothing like gloves long sleeves and eye protection before touching it and urges members of the public to watch out for poison cane toads can ooze and sometimes squirt poison from glands behind the head it should be kept in a well-ventilated container with a little water in a cool location until the species can be determined To report a cane toad sighting or capture, visit ToadScan or use the online form for suspicious sightings. Magic coach Jim Cresnar credited his substitutes for getting them over the line to be crowned champions over Edgeworth FC in a thrilling afternoon at Magic Park on Saturday Magic secured the premiership-championship double after the grand final against Edgeworth went down to the wire and had to be decided on penalties The premiers fired out of the blocks and asserted their early dominance in the first five minutes Magic’s Riley Smith threatened down the right-hand side and Wells caused havoc in the middle of the park but Edgeworth did enough to hold them out The Eagles struggled to get out of their own half but started to get into the game after the 30-minute mark Keanu Moore had a shot after finding space inside the penalty area in the 34th minute for the Edgeworth but Magic goalkeeper Lewis Alvarez was able to see the strike in time and make a strong save The sides went into half-time scoreless with all on the line in the second 45 minutes Magic endured a disastrous start to the second half when Alexander Rose was sent off after being shown a second yellow card in the 48th minute after he missed the ball and struck goalkeeper Ben Conway in the chest with his boot It did not take long for Edgeworth to make the most of their extra-man advantage after a super strike from right back Aaron Oppedisano in the 56th minute Oppedisano received the ball out wide and unmarked before he smashed the ball from long range into the bottom corner of the net But the Eagles’ high was short-lived after they were also reduced to 10 men in the 58th minute when Xander Woweries was shown his second yellow card for a handball that stopped a promising Magic attack Ryan Feutz had the chance to double Edgeworth’s lead with a spectacular bicycle kick inside the penalty area but there was not enough on the shot and it fell straight into the gloves of Alvarez Edgeworth appeared to be creeping towards the title until Magic snatched an equaliser five minutes from full-time after a mistake from Conway The Edgeworth goalkeeper rose highest to collect a high ball but was unable to catch it The ball spilled to the feet of Wells who stuck the ball into the back of the net The two teams showed desperation to edge ahead but neither side could be separated at full-time and the match headed into extra time The Eagles did not wait long to regain the lead after another powerful goal three minutes after the restart Seth Clark carried the ball up the pitch before he sliced a perfectly placed pass through to Riley van Haren The substitute struck the ball with power and it curled past the outstretched reach of Alvarez into the goal Magic coach Jim Cresnar substituted Broadmeadow’s star midfielder Wells as well as Jarrod Baker for Josh Benson and Tom Parkes But the changes sparked life back into Magic as they struck back again in the 105th minute through James Cresnar after he received a ball across the face of the goal and tapped it into the back of the net Broadmeadow thought they had sealed the win in the 112th minute when Parkes smashed the ball on target But Conway pulled off a top-class save to tip the ball over the crossbar The score remained locked up at 2-2 at full-time of extra time which sent the game to a penalty shootout Edgeworth captain Andrew Pawiak stepped up first and converted from the spot before Magic’s Jayden Stewardson netted his strike Alvarez saved Sam Jones’s shot to give Magic the advantage and Josh Benson buried his attempt Mason King netted his strike for the Eagles before Conway got a touch on Sam Kamper’s shot but the ball bounced into the goal Edgeworth’s Chris Fayers hit the back of the net but Magic lost their advantage when Conway saved Nicholas Kacev’s attempt The competition’s leading goal scorer Fuetz’s strike went straight into the hands of Alvarez before Tom Beecham converted the winning penalty for Magic Beecham was awarded the D.G.Williams Medal for the player of the match Broadmeadow coach Cresnar said that he believed his substitutions made a big impact on the outcome of the game “I think just due to the dynamics of the team we needed to make some changes later in the game,” Cresnar said “We needed to freshen up and to be fair to the substitutes they made a difference to have fresh legs like we had that wanted to go out there and win helped us.” The Broadmeadow coach said that the victory meant a lot to the playing group and everyone at the club “The level of resilience and tenacity shown as well as the team culture was outstanding “We were able to get ourselves back into the game with the hard work and effort we showed To have first grade and reserve grade win is massive and shows the quality coming through our ranks Edgeworth coach Pete McGuinness was heartbroken to go down the way they did but was proud of his team’s efforts I think that they have had a fantastic season,” McGuinness said From where we were [without a win] after five weeks to where we have finished up is credit to the hard work “I am very pleased for the boys that they got to be here on the big day “We fell a bit short and maybe could have closed things out a little bit better at times but I mean it was an end-to-end game “I am very happy with the performance but disappointed for them “Edgeworth is back in the finals and that’s where we intend to stay.” It was double delight for Broadmeadow after Magic had earlier taken out the reserve grade grand final defeating premiers Newcastle Olympic 2-1.  a woman has died following a single-vehicle crash in Lake Macquarie Broadmeadow Magic v Edgeworth FC  Magic Park, Saturday 3pm Edgeworth FC coach Pete McGuinness believes his Kiwi duo will play a vital role in winning the championship against Broadmeadow Magic on Saturday. The two established clubs will go head-to-head in the grand final at Magic Park to be crowned champions. The Eagles struggled to kick-start their season, with no wins in the first five matches. But they went from strength to strength with the help of the addition of New Zealand youth internationals Seth Clark and Ryan Feutz, who have taken them to their first grand final since 2020. McGuinness said that Clark and Feutz were crucial to the Eagles’ success this weekend. “They [Clark and Feutz] are pretty important,” McGuinness said. “They both had great games last weekend and stood up on a big occasion. They produced something special and both goals were brilliant. “In Ryan’s case, he is someone who really knows how to find the target. We have always created opportunities but were notorious for not scoring from them. Ryan has come in and hit the ground running.” McGuinness said that everyone at the club was thrilled to be involved in another grand final. “It has been a number of years since we have been up there,” McGuinness said. “It is nice to be back in finals and in the grand final. “The club is excited and everyone is thrilled but there is still work to do. “It is a big prize to make it to the grand final. “It is a big reward for a lot of the people who have worked behind the scenes to get the club going in the right direction. But a better reward will be when we win it. “I have tried to shield everyone away from the hype but I am sure that all the Edgeworth supporters will be out there and let's hope that it is a bumper crowd.” Edgeworth fell short to Magic in the major semi-final after they went down 2-0 but bounced back to defeat Charlestown Azzurri 3-2 in the preliminary final to advance to the grand final. McGuinness said that the group took a lot of confidence away from their win over the Blues and hoped they could continue their momentum on Saturday. “The win has given us a little bit more confidence in being a bit more physical and in how we approach the game,” McGuinness said. “It gave us a good opportunity to feel what it is like to know that it is all over if you don’t win. “It has put us in the right frame of mind to come out swinging. “We are all upbeat and are a pretty focused group.” But McGuinness admitted that the game plan may have to change from their last hit out against Magic, with pitch and field conditions predicted to be less than ideal. “The conditions affected us massively the last time we went there,” McGuinness said. “We tried to play a bit of football and the conditions with the field combined with the wind made it near impossible.” Magic’s men have not lifted the championship trophy since 2018 but featured in the 2023 grand final where they went down 2-1 to Lambton Jaffas. But this year the premiers hoped to settle the score and be crowned champions once again. Broadmeadow coach Jim Cresnar looked forward to the club’s second grand final in a row in front of a home crowd. “We are feeling good, very excited,” Cresnar said. “The main thing is for the players to enjoy the occasion and take in the moments. “Experience is an important part of controlling nerves. Experience is important but the youth and enthusiasm of the younger players are too. “We are very fortunate to have both reserve grade and first grade teams in the grand final. We expect massive crowds. It is very exciting for the club. “It is great for the club to be potentially back in the winning circle. “Our goal is to make the match a great experience and hope that a bit of luck goes our way.” Broadmeadow got the better of the Eagles in the major semi-final but Cresnar said that he expected the toughest match yet this weekend.            “I think that every time we play against Edgeworth we seem to struggle against them. We need to make sure that they don’t dominate,” Cresnar said. “It will be a difficult game for us. We need to make sure that we stay in the game. “I think the biggest thing is that Edgeworth has been a strong team overall and has dangerous players such as Seth and Ryan who have been dominating the league and have set the benchmark. But they also have so many other players who have been very consistent and can hurt us. “We will need to make sure that we do our job well and hope for a bit of luck.” Everyone will be available for Magic on the weekend, which Cresnar said was a nice problem to have. “It is a difficult task selecting the starting lineup. Everyone deserves to start with their dedication shown,” Cresnar said. “The good thing about our squad is that we have depth. I think that may play a part in the outcome of the game with some of our experienced players coming off the bench.” In reserve grade, Broadmeadow Magic will take on Newcastle Olympic for the championship. The match kicks off at 12pm.  Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueAbout 1.40am Thursday December 19 emergency services were called to Main Road Lake Macquarie police attended the scene and found a car had crashed into a pole The female passenger of the vehicle was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before she was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition No further details have been released at this time Anyone with dash cam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 Information can also be submitted online via https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au Information is treated in strict confidence The fatality comes ahead of police launching their annual road safety blitz across NSW roads Operation Christmas/New Year 2024 runs from Friday December 20 until 11.59pm on New Year's Day Double demerits apply throughout that period for speeding Swansea MP and Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley urged drivers to do their part in keeping the road toll as low as possible "This is such a special time of year - a chance to celebrate with family and friends but it's also one of the most dangerous times to be on the road," Minister Catley said "Some people think it's okay to check a text but road rules exist to keep everyone safe "While police will be out and about patrolling this holiday season it's up to all of us to take responsibility - and if you do the wrong thing you can expect to see red and blue lights in your rear-view mirror "You don't want to get a fine in the mail or lose your licence you don't want to be the reason someone misses out on celebrating with their loved ones this Christmas drive like your life depends on it - because it does." said six people died during the same period last year "Every choice you make on the road can save lives," she said "With many people expected to be on the roads travelling across the state to celebrate the festive season I remind everyone to be vigilant and allow extra time to travel "It's easy to become complacent about road safety but unsafe driving can have tragic consequences "I urge everyone to obey the road rules and make safe decisions every time you're behind the wheel so everyone can reach their destinations safely to enjoy the holidays with their loved ones and more importantly avoid hurting yourself or other people on the road correctly wearing a seatbelt and giving yourself plenty of travel time I also urge you to follow this advice and always wear a helmet and protective gear," Minister Aitchison said Acting Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman said the upcoming holiday period is traditionally the busiest time of year for drivers we have seen an increase of fatal crashes on our roads in recent weeks friends and whole communities," Acting Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman said "Our traffic enforcement activities seek to ensure all road users get to their destinations safely and I urge people to consider the potential impacts of irresponsible behaviour - which can change lives forever "The risk of a fine or the loss of demerit points should deter people from breaking the law not putting the lives of others at risk should be the incentive to use our roads safely "People can expect to see a highly-visible police presence on all roads across NSW - from major motorways to backstreets this means not driving while you are tired driving to the conditions and not getting behind the wheel if you have been drinking alcohol have taken illicit drugs or are impaired in any way," Acting Assistant Commissioner Chapman said Police said 330 people had died in NSW crashes up to December 17 Those include a spate of deaths in the Hunter in recent months, including several within days on the New England Highway earlier this month Road Trauma Support Group founding member Duncan Wakes-Miller lost his 17-year-old son in a crash in 2020 where he was a passenger in a car being driven by a drunk and speeding P-plater "The ripple effect of road trauma is profound and long-lasting for our family and in our community "Dangerous and drunk driving should be treated as socially unacceptable by everyone If you drive drunk you will get caught and if you drive too fast you will lose your licence "Please everyone 'speak up and step in' to prevent road deaths." As Romney acknowledges, a decades-long tradition of feminist scholarship has enabled academics and students to appreciate the works of these authors, previously dismissed as inferior forerunners of Austen, if not omitted altogether from histories of the novel. But neither their writings — nor their eventful lives — have been embraced by popular culture like Austen’s, despite the availability of many of their works in modern editions and online. Romney downplays both Edgeworth’s sophisticated engagements with post-union Ireland, and her complicated legacy in Irish literary history Romney never fully confronts all the possible reasons why the Austen mystique continues to obscure these writers’ achievements — but she vividly communicates her sometimes surprised enjoyment of their works, finding them in some ways superior to Austen’s (Burney and Smith are credited with greater frankness concerning the sexual double standard, and the subjection of women under 18th-century British law). Facebook pageTwitter feed© 2025 The Irish Times DAC Match of the Round Lambton Jaffas v Edgeworth FC Arthur Edden Oval Edgeworth FC coach Pete McGuinness believes his side are up for the test against Lambton Jaffas when they face off at Arthur Edden Oval on Saturday afternoon.  These two sides are presently the most two in form teams in the competition with Jaffas not losing a game all season and the Eagles on a seven-game winning streak.  But the Jaffas were toppled for the first time this season in their Tuesday night catch-up match against New Lambton where they had to settle for a 1-1 draw while Edgeworth scored a dominant 7-0 victory over Adamstown Rosebud in their rescheduled fixture on Wednesday night.  Edgeworth enters the contest sitting fourth on the table four points behind Charlestown Azzurri in third.  McGuinness acknowledged the impact that the draw will have on the Jaffas but remained confident that his side was ready to cause an upset on Saturday it will be a big test,” McGuinness said.  “Lambton have been doing the business all year and they have a lot of good quality and experienced players amongst them but one that I believe we are up for.  “We’ve been on a bit of a roll with our performances and results “We are steadily improving; we just need to keep getting better as the season goes on “I thought that the draw for Jaffas was a bit of a surprise but at the end of the day what that will do to them is fire them up a bit more “I don’t think that one game would define a season but this one is a pretty important one for us for a number of reasons because we have been winning games and we have a bit of momentum which we are looking forward to a strong performance to test ourselves and test them a big result will help hold us in good shape for the rest of the season.” The Eagles coach is thrilled with the recent form of his side and was pleased with how new signing Ryan Feutz has seamlessly slotted into his attack.  He debuted with a hat-trick and then scored two against Olympic,” McGuinness said “Ryan is a talented young footballer with a really good work ethic and his combinations with the other boys already is really good The comradery is
