Something new is rolling out on Brisbane’s roads
Almost nine years after then-lord mayor Graham Quirk announced his Brisbane Metro plan
the first vehicles are taking to the streets
between Eight Mile Plains and UQ Lakes.Credit: Brisbane City Council
So what is the $1.4 billion Brisbane Metro
is initially running services on the existing 169 bus route on the South East Busway
Eastern Busway and across the Eleanor Schonell Bridge
the Metro is running on the same frequency and hours as the 169 route
People can hail it just like they would a bus, and tap on with a go card. Trips cost 50¢
Three large doors help passengers board efficiently
and once onboard they will hear a familiar voice – Brisbane-raised Bluey star Melanie Zanetti
known for her character Chilli – announcing the stop
interchange opportunities and points of interest
The vehicles feature Wi-Fi and USB charging points
a panoramic rear window and other large windows
The Metro vehicles will travel along the South-East busway and through dedicated tunnels.Credit: Brisbane City Council
Much has been said about how the Brisbane Metro is not a “metro” in the international sense
and could cause confusion for some who think it is a train line
switching from Brisbane’s current buses on these dedicated busways to the much bigger Metro vehicles could double capacity
That means an extra 7300 people travelling on the already busy routes each day
or an additional 30 million trips per year
Council’s 60 fully electric Metro vehicles are 24.4 metres long – double the length of a standard bus – and can accommodate even more people
and can charge in under six minutes.Credit: Brisbane City Council
Metro vehicles have a 150-passenger capacity – with 63 seats and up to 87 standing – or up to 170 people in total in “event mode”
which at 12.5 metres long have a capacity of 79 people
which at 18 metres long can hold more than 110 people
The Metro between Eight Mile Plains and UQ is just the beginning
The next stages will see the network service 18 stations across new Metro 1 and Metro 2 lines
QUT Kelvin Grove and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital
Springwood in the south and to the Brisbane Airport
said it was the start of “turn up and go” public transport in Brisbane
meaning passengers could stop relying on bus timetables
“This is the kind of thing that big global cities have had for many years,” he said
Murphy admitted the Brisbane Metro name caused “some confusion”
and hinted there might be changes in the future
“We’re having a good look at the name at the moment … but ultimately
Murphy said Metro 1 and 2 would run at five-minute frequencies
but could be ramped up to three-minutes in peak hour
A date for a full opening depended on negotiations with the state government

Brisbane is making the step-change from public transport to mass transit by 2032
unveiling plans that could boost capacity by another 41 million seats over the next eight years
New analysis revealed the additional seats that could be added to the network every year under a proposed expansion of Brisbane Metro to 22 new stations as outlined in Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner’s Race to Gold: Brisbane’s Games Transport Legacy
This is in addition to Metro 1 from Roma Street to Eight Mile Plains and Metro 2 from UQ to RBWH which will boost capacity by an extra 30 million seats every year
The proposed expansion would extend the Brisbane Metro bus rapid transit system north to Carseldine
east to Capalaba and out to Brisbane Airport
The Brisbane Metro expansion would connect key Games precincts to a network of bus rapid transit services
There are 18 anticipated Olympic and Paralympic venues across Brisbane
with a target of 90 per cent of trips to venues to be taken by public and active transport
During the Sydney 2000 and London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
overall public transport patronage increased by almost one million trips per day
Brisbane’s current public transport system can only serve about 50 per cent of projected trips to and from Games venues
Brisbane’s bus fleet carried about 71 million passengers last financial year
Brisbane has grown faster than any other capital city over the past 10 years
with 1.55 million people expected to call Brisbane home by 2041
the current public transport network is no longer fit for purpose
Brisbane Metro’s Bus rapid transit routes will be critical to the city’s transport future given it is no longer practical or affordable to build above-ground heavy rail routes through the city’s suburbs
The Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council have jointly written to the Federal Government seeking support to progress a rapid business case using existing City Deal funding
An ongoing partnership between all levels of government is critical to deliver the Brisbane Metro expansion ahead of Brisbane 2032
Quotes attributable to Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner:
“Brisbane Metro is the future of bus rapid transit and we’re keen to expand it even further to ease congestion and keep Brisbane moving
“A Brisbane Games has always been about delivering a positive legacy for our city
“Brisbane’s incredible growth means better public transport must be a priority today
“We’re already making that step change from public transport to mass transit with the introduction of Brisbane Metro services along our existing busway network
“The expansion of Brisbane Metro to Carseldine
Springwood and out to the airport is the logical next step to helping people travel around our city sooner and safer
“Premier Crisafulli has been a long-time supporter of Brisbane Metro and we’ll continue working closely to help people get around Brisbane sooner and safer
“I’m confident with all three levels of government on board we can deliver a lasting transport legacy that benefits Brisbane and the rest of Queensland.”

The State Government has announced that a key site has been located for a new health hub in South Brisbane
located at Lots 59 & 65 Levington Road
Queensland Premier outlined that the State Government has secured the final location in the $265 million Satellite Hospitals Program allowing work to begin announcing that Eight Mile Plains would be home to the south Brisbane facility and adding to the six other locations
“My Government committed to delivering seven convenient and community-focused satellite hospitals in the south-east to provide ancillary and minor healthcare services and to ease pressure off nearby hospitals”
“Securing the site on Levington Road at Eight Mile Plains means this Program is one step closer to becoming a reality
“All seven Satellite Hospitals will provide health services in growing urban areas so Queenslanders can receive the care they need closer to home and in a more convenient setting,” the Premier said
Deputy Premier outlined the site identified at Eight Mile Plains was a parcel of RACQ-owned land
“We promised to deliver seven satellite hospitals in South East Queensland to take pressure off our busy health system
and today we have secured the seventh site in south Brisbane”

“It will improve healthcare and support jobs in construction and healthcare jobs in operation,” Mr Miles said

The proposal will provide for the use of high quality landscaping throughout the site and along the site frontage and common boundaries
The proposed landscaping will visually soften the built form and ensure a landscaped interface with the streetscape and adjoining properties.”
including a site cover of 1,679sqm (41.5%) over the 4,047sqm subject site
A RENOVATION inspired by Pinterest has left the home at 38 Liverpool St is barely recognisable
BEFORE: The front of the home before renovation
Originally built in 1920, the Eight Mile Plains house had some updates over the years
with multiple different types of flooring and a retro kitchen
Owner Junior Faraimo bought the home two years ago
“It’s been a full renovation,” Mr Faraimo said
AFTER: The kitchen is modern but still fits in with the cottage style of the home
The home has also been painted inside and out
The character of the cottage remains intact
with VJ walls and high ceilings throughout
the master with a space that could be used as either a walk-in robe or dressing room
a round mirror and statement black tapware
BEFORE: The living room was carpeted and separate from the dining room
Mr Faraimo opened up the once-separate kitchen
living and dining areas to give the home a less cluttered feel
“I love how with the open plan living you can walk straight into the kitchen and lounge room
and then on to the deck and the backyard,” he said
BEFORE: The dining room had different walls to the lounge
AFTER: The VJ walls are now uniform throughout the home
living and dining opens out to the deck through bi-fold doors
Now Mr Fairaimo is looking to upsize and said the Liverpool St property would suit a first-home owner
“It’s a very cosy and comfortable house,” he said
He said the neighbourhood was filled with friendly
“The neighbours have been there for a while and everyone knows each other.”

Ray White Rochedale agent Anton Silaen and Sunnybank unit buyer Steven Ma
A RETIREE who secured his son’s first home at auction competed against eight registered bidders for the property in one of Brisbane’s fastest growing unit markets
made the top bid of $580,000 for the three-bedroom
two-bathroom townhouse in Sunnybank – marking a new record price for the Deason St complex of 23 units
The property was marketed by Ray White Rochedale agents
and last sold in March 2022 for $500,000 after 8 days on the market
It had attracted strong interest from first-home buyers locked out of the housing market through the Covid boom
Sunnybank and neighbouring Acacia Ridge recorded the city’s strongest quarterly growth
with unit prices up more than 24 per cent to a median of $504,000 in the three months to March
Auctioneer Phil Groom took an opening offer of $450,000
with three bidders active in the final throes of bidding
The vendors had converted the garage into another living space
Around 12 more bids were quickly fielded before the auction was called
Mr Silaen said the renovated two-storey townhouse was sought after by young buyers competing for a diminished supply of affordable properties for sale in the area
Just three other units were listed for sale in Sunnybank on realestate.com.au this week
Many buyers who had previously set their sights on buying a free-standing home were settling on units or townhouses instead
with interest rate hikes and their effect on borrowing power pushing more people into the lower price brackets
The unit had been renovated with new flooring
It attracted strong interest from first-home buyers

Builder’s big gains on Brisbane’s most-viewed home
“They kept on missing out or they thought the price was too high then
and now they can’t afford to buy the house they wanted so they are all coming to buy units,” Mr Silaen said
“Interest in this townhouse has been extremely high because people have no choice
“There’s a shortage of properties available for sale in the area
Light-filled kitchen overlooking the back terrace area
The townhouse has three bedrooms and two bathrooms
Mr Ma said his almost 40-year-old son will move into the unit with his partner
His son had been living at home with Mr Ma and his wife
He had spent three weeks attending open-home inspections and auctions in the area
and was happy with the sale price despite bidding $30,000 over his budget
“My budget is $550,000 but sometimes I’m crazy,” Mr Ma said
The highest price previously paid for home in the complex was $510,000 in May 2022
while about 85 per cent of the units were owner-occupied
The complex was located within walking distance to public transports
