The award-winning rehabilitation of Ironbark Creek is continuing
This stage focused on 350 metres of creek line from Croudace Road
The project has worked to renaturalise the channel
replacing weeds with thousands of suitable native plants on the creek banks; and installing rockwork to better protect the creek as well as public and private assets
The work will produce an environmentally friendly watercourse which will improve flows and help make the creek and floodplain behave in more predictable ways during major floods
It will include maintenance access to the channel near Croudace Road for debris removal
The project will also improve our local tree canopy corridors and habitat making the area friendlier for native plants
which was completed in June 2023 extends more than a decade of previously successful
award-winning work for Ironbark Creek (wider catchment pictured below) - from Elermore Vale Park downstream to Wallsend Park
where the creek flows into a Hunter Water channel
The next stages are currently in the design phase and will integrate with Wallsend Stormwater infrastructure upgrade works. Keep updated on the Delivering for Wallsend page

The joy of music belongs to everyone – but few teachers have brought it to as many students
it was time to farewell one of the Hunter’s longest standing music teachers
nine hundred and ninety – that’s the number of children Lyndell Robertson has taught in her 33 years at Elermore Vale Public School
if the school’s Year 6 captains have their maths correct.
the exact figures didn’t seem to matter on Wednesday afternoon when the popular teacher said farewell to her beloved students.
This was a celebration spoken in Mrs Robertson’s favourite language – music.
became the star of the show as the teacher said goodbye to the Newcastle school that has been her second home for more than three decades
As gifts were presented to her at her final school assembly
sung in unisome some of her favourite tunes.
Ms Robertson has been a constant at the Jubilee Road school since she started there in 1990.
“It was the year the number one song in Australia was Nothing Compares to You – somewhat appropriate,” said school captain Harivansh Shah.
the passionate mentor established the School Band
Year 6 Voca Ensemble and Ukelele Ensemble.
She produced Creative and Performing Arts evenings
“Her energy for sharing her passion has only been matched by her wonderful temperament and patience in ensuring every student benefits as much as possible from all the benefits of learning music,” said principal Luke Somerville.
“Music develops so many skills like listening
it has a great knock-on effect through the rest of the curriculum.
“We have been truly fortunate to have somone of Lyndell’s musical and teaching ability to foster those skills in our students for so many years.”
the school’s P&C presented Ms Robertson with a bouquet of flowers and some heartfelt words.
The captains were quick to point out that the presenting parents were also once students of the popular teacher.
“This is a bittersweet moment for all of us,” said Mr Somerville.
“We’re sad that such an amazing person in our lives is finishing here at Elermore Vale Public School
but we also get to celebrate all of the beautiful memories of Mr Robertson.”
What followed was a succession of songs that eventually had all those gathered in the school hall singing and clapping along with.
“It’s the little things that Ms Robertson does
I know that any time I ever walked past her classroom there was no chance of me getting by without either singing
playing an instrument or playing with finger puppets,” recalled Mr Somerville.
“She just has an uncanny ability to make you feel good about yourself in everything that you do.
“Thirty-three years in one school is amazing
but as well as that she’s an incredible human being.”
Reflecting on her time at the primary school
Mrs Robertson says the secret to longevity in the industry is passion.
“You need to enjoy your job,” she told the Newcastle Weekly.
“I love working with children and I love music
so to combine the two and to watch the rewards children have on their performances
whether in the classroom or a concert or at an assembly
that’s where they feel better about themselves and that makes me happy.”
the students at Elermore Vale Public School performed a ‘clap-out’ cheering the popular teacher from the school hall to the classrooms

Water has been restored to dozens of homes today – after a burst water main flooded streets and backyards in Elermore Vale
with investigations now underway to determine what caused it
City of Newcastle has commenced the next stage of its award-winning Ironbark Creek rehabilitation project
targeting 350 metres of creek from Croudace Road
The $2.6 million stage of the project will significantly renaturalise the channel replacing weeds with thousands of native plants on the creek banks
and new rock work will better protect the creek as well as public and private assets.
The project will produce an environmentally friendly watercourse
which will improve flow and help make the creek and floodplain behave in more predictable ways during major floods.
Image: Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes inspects a previously rehabilitated section of Ironbark Creek with City of Newcastle staff (L-R) Sam Parker
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the complex project has been crucial in ensuring the health and long-term sustainability of the creek.
“City of Newcastle is committed to caring for and enhancing our natural environment and that is clear to see when you consider what we have achieved with Ironbark Creek
We started rehabilitation works 10 years ago and I'm proud to say that we are now continuing on with this next stage," Cr Nelmes said.
"We expect this work will also improve the local tree canopy and habitat in the area
making the creek line friendlier for native plants
The Ironbark Creek project began in 2011 and by using nature-based solutions
aims to rehabilitate the creek from Elermore Vale Park
downstream to Wallsend Park where the creek flows into a Hunter Water Channel.
"Ironbark Creek is the city's largest tidal creek draining to the Hunter River
Its catchment covers nearly 13,000 hectares and is crucial to the health of our local catchment," Cr Nelmes added.
"We have invested over $4.1 million into rehabilitating Ironbark Creek over the past decade
which provides flow on benefits beyond the creek
Hexham Swamp is a fresh water and estuarine wetland
which was once the largest predominantly freshwater wetland on the near north coast of New South Wales
The benefits will also reach as far as the Hunter River mouth at Sandgate."
Work on this stage of the project is scheduled to be completed in November
with the next two stages currently in the design phase.

Just days after water from a burst high pressure main flooded homes at Elermore Vale, one resident has been left homeless after a devastating fire.
Fire crews from Cardiff, Lambton and Mayfield West were called to the single level townhouse on Taurus Street at about 4.30pm on Monday to find the villa well alight.
It’s taken them about an hour to douse the flames which caused extensive damage to the townhouse.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

"There are two ways we can do this," Rolls-Fitzgerald told the boy. "You can give me the money and go, or I can shoot you with the 12-gauge shotgun or stab you with the knife. What do you want?"
Rolls-Fitzgerald appeared in Newcastle Local Court via audio visual link from jail this week and pleaded guilty to armed robbery.
Already serving a jail term for his role in the failed home invasion at Valentine, Rolls-Fitzgerald is facing more time behind bars when he is sentenced in Newcastle District Court later in the year.
According to an agreed statement of facts, the victim asked a friend in March where he could buy some cannabis and was referred to Rolls-Fitzgerald.
He reached out to him via Facebook and the pair exchanged messages and discussed prices and quantity.
It was about 4.30pm on March 28 when the victim and a friend drove over to Rolls-Fitzgerald's unit with $270. Rolls-Fitzgerald had repeatedly told the victim to come into the unit, saying he had one leg and did not want to catch coronavirus by going outside.
"Run in got one leg bro not worth the virus to run out haaha," Rolls-Fitzgerald said in one message.
The victim hadn't been inside long when Rolls-Fitzgerald made the threats, pointing to a knife attached to a stick on his bed and lifting up a black shotgun.
Scared, the victim handed over the money and Rolls-Fitzgerald told him: "I am sorry I had to do this, but corona has hit me hard. I need this to buy a bottle of Xanax or I am going to kill someone."
And as the victim left Rolls-Fitzgerald's unit, something bizarre happened; he accidentally let out his attacker's dog prompting Rolls-Fitzgerald to ask: "Can you get the dog for me?"
The victim got the dog and put it back inside and then went back out to where his friend was waiting in the car.
"I just got a gun pointed to my head," the victim said, visibly shaken.
Newcastle City police launched an investigation and about 7am on March 30 officers, with assistance from police negotiators and the Tactical Operations Region Support (TORS) Group, went to a unit on Smith Street, Elermore Vale, and spoke with Rolls-Fitzgerald.
Police said Rolls-Fitzgerald peacefully surrendered and was arrested about 7.40am.
Rolls-Fitzgerald was one of nine people charged over an attempted home invasion at Valentine in May, 2019. On that occasion two car loads of people armed themselves with a 12-gauge shotgun, a knife and three baseball bats and tried, unsuccessfully, to get into a house on Berringar Road.
He pleaded guilty to using an offensive weapon in company and possession of a shortened firearm and in July was jailed for a maximum of 20 months, with a non-parole period of 10 months.
Work to remediate a sink hole that opened under the Wallsend Diggers Sports Club on Fogo Street in March will take approximately another three weeks to complete
the state authority that deals with such matters has estimated
The NSW Mine Subsidence Authority has taken charge of operations to stabilise the earth beneath the Sporties
Workers have spent the past three months pumping a grout solution into subterranean voids to stabilise an estimated 60-square-metre area mostly beneath the Sporties bowling greens
several wells have been sunk into the street
and in some cases into the land on residential properties along Fogo Street
to target specific areas of the mine beneath
But a Mine Subsidence Authority spokesperson assured residents that these were not necessarily an indication of subsidence impacts or ground movement
there have been no reports of damage to residential properties as a result of the subsidence
"It is possible for ground to subside without causing any damage to the buildings above," the spokesperson said
While the authority estimated initial works could be finished in the next three weeks
the spokesperson said more time might be needed following the verification process
the state government changed the review system that dealt with compensating property owners in areas prone to mine subsidence
state records showed that there had been only four damage claims for properties in a subsidence district that ultimately revealed non-compliant development practices
prompting the department to scrap a cumbersome compliance check system of issuing subsidence certificates
Under the Coal Mine Subsidence Compensation Act 2017
property owners are entitled to compensation - paid either by the proprietor of an active coal mine
or by the state's coal mine subsidence compensation fund in the case of issues arising from a non-active mine - for damages and actions to mitigate damage from subsidence
A state map notes a litany of Newcastle suburbs
as well as areas throughout the Hunter Valley and Lake Macquarie
The state's spokesperson said the ultimate cost of works to fix the Fogo Street subsidence could not be determined until "well after completion" of the works to remediate the site
adding "compensation claims for coal mine subsidence are determined through a claims assessment process"
Industry veterans Reg Mawhinney and Geoff Byrne have listed their big mining town pub
with plenty of blue sky in thriving Newcastle
The large-format Shaft occupies a generous 6,720sqm block
adjacent to the IGA-anchored Elermore Vale Shopping Centre
bringing foot traffic and another 250 car spaces to the pub’s 60 spaces
In FY18 the business reported average weekly income above $97k
while ranking just #447 on the Liquor & Gaming list of NSW pubs
Mawhinny is a legend of the hotel insurance trade
and business partner Byrne has operated the pub in the partnership for the past 15 years
The pair have put the Elermore Vale local to market through HTL Property’s Blake Edwards and Daniel Dragicevich
in conjunction with area specialist Deane Moore of Moore and Moore Real Estate
“The Shaft Tavern is a rare western Newcastle gaming asset – undoubtedly one of the most anticipated pubs brought to market in NSW this year,” states Edwards
“An astute operator will recognise its potential upside across all departments
