he is asking the community to help and speak up much to the chagrin of all but the fittest cyclists who have to surmount the hills of Petersen Road and the lack of shoulder on Camp Mountain Road for the Samford end of the route,’ said Mr Audus ‘The cycle link is extremely popular and would be more so The Cycle Link was established to provide a safer and more direct connection between Samford Village and Ferny Grove Rail Station for people riding bikes It was facilitated by repurposing a disused railway corridor for a safe relatively flat cycling and walking route between Ferny Grove and Samford Constructed at a total cost of $3.2 million across two stages – with Stage 1 providing a 1.4km off-road link from Lanita Road to McLean Road – it is Stage 2 where this shortfall is identified Stage 2 provided 3.85km of on-road treatments on McLean Road as well as 400m shared path between McLean Road and Petersen Road The Department of Transport and Main Roads highlights Stage 2 delivered low-cost bicycle infrastructure improvements that improved bike rider safety between Stage 1 and Samford Village TMR’s website goes on to explain the improvements included installation of signage and yellow bike symbols on road surfaces along Petersen Road and Camp Mountain Road The signs and road markings help bike riders follow the route between Petersen Road and Samford Village Mr Audus does not believe the infrastructure improvements went far enough particularly with no constructed shoulders or pathways on the Camp Mountain Road section to ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians the hilly sections of Petersen Road make the Cycle Link less appetising for social riders including young families and senior citizens A potential resolution Mr Audus has identified comes from the land at 85 Petersen Road ‘The long western boundary coincides with the old Dayboro railway line – an excellent indeed beautiful connection for both cyclists and pedestrians Mr Audus has made efforts to lobby the Queensland Government and the City of Moreton Bay writing to The Honourable Nikki Boyd MP (Member for Pine Rivers) and Councillor Darren Grimwade (Division 11) respectively to exercise government provisions to resume a narrow strip along the property boundary to adequately complete the Cycle Link ‘Given that the property is in transition and that the resumption would impinge very little on the greater part of the property such a resumption should not be contentious,’ said Mr Audus Mr Audus’ request was met with resistance from TMR citing the department has no approved planning at this location that would enable the purchase of 85 Petersen Road The City of Moreton Bay seemed more favourable with Cr Grimwade confirming he had discussed this with the Council’s CEO who had also asked the appropriate department in Council to investigate the acquisition and report back Should the City of Moreton Bay acquire the property ‘I would definitely be lobbying the State Government to fund the completion of the infrastructure required to complete the originally proposed rail trail I will definitely keep the community updated.’ Mr Audus wrote to Echo News asking for your support in canvassing the Queensland Government and the City of Moreton Bay to complete the Cycle Link ‘Let’s advocate to TMR and City of Moreton Bay Council to grasp this opportunity and finish the job Surely now is the perfect time to set its completion in train To contact Cr Darren Grimwade, email Darren.Grimwade@moretonbay.qld.gov.au Be the first to know about local news and events   Echo News is bound emergency services following the deaths of two people who had 'adverse reactions' from drugs they'd taken in a suburban home Emergency services were called to the Kentville St property in Mitchelton in Brisbane's north at 8.50am on Thursday finding the two people inside unresponsive A 61-year-old Keperra man and a 35-year-old Mitchelton woman were later declared dead at the scene A 41-year-old Greenslopes man has since been charged with two counts of murder with the aggravating feature of reckless indifference and two counts each of supply dangerous drugs and possess dangerous drugs Ferny Grove Criminal Investigation Branch Senior Sergeant Mick Jones said police would allege the man had supplied the pair with drugs hours before their death 'He also allegedly failed to contact emergency services when the man and the woman had an adverse reaction to the substances,' Sergeant Jones said 'The investigation that we've conducted indicate he bought the drugs to the premises and provided them to those there 'He was there for the duration (of the drug taking).' It will be alleged the pair were unconscious when police arrived but later died One of the woman's four children called triple-0 on Thursday morning Sergeant Jones said the 41-year-old man was at the property when police arrived and assisted them with their inquiries He then 'voluntarily accompanied' police to the station for further questioning before being charged 'When the job was tasked and police and QAS came to the scene very quickly he was out the front of the residence,' Sergeant Jones said 'He's co-operative with police and he voluntarily wished to assist us with the investigation moving forward.' When asked if the circumstances would have been any different if the man had called triple-0 Sergeant Jones replied: 'It certainly would have helped.' Police will further allege the man had moved a car belonging to one of his 'friends' before returning to the property That car was also now being treated as a crime scene While police are still waiting to receive the toxicology and autopsy reports Sergeant Jones said they were 'pretty confident' some of the drugs consumed by the pair included cocaine and amphetamines Sergeant Jones said he didn't believe there was further risk to the community and it was unlikely these drugs were from a bad batch Police will allege the 41-year-old man had also consumed drugs with the pair but might not have used the same drugs as the other two because he didn't have an 'adverse reaction' 'I don't know the exact way the whole situation transpired,' Sergeant Jones said 'He certainly indicated they used drugs on that evening .. whether they all used the same drugs (is unclear).' Sergeant Jones said he was also unable to comment on the quantity or quality of the drugs that caused the deaths until police received the toxicology reports He said the pair allegedly had the adverse reaction to the drugs 'reasonably quickly' after they were consumed He confirmed none of the three was in an intimate relationship with one another but instead 'loose associates' or 'friends' Sergeant Jones said the four children were now in the care of their father - who does not live at the property - and grandmother following the 'traumatic situation' The man was due to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday Major terror attack 'was just HOURS away' before it was foiled by the special forces and police:.. markets on Sunday However, with the new Transport Orientated Development taking place at the Ferny Grove train station it was reported that the Ferny Grove Markets would be here to stay despite the new development changing the landscape of the Ferny Grove Station it appears that the new market site that was offered was to be on the top floor of the new multi-level car park which was not a suitable location nor held convenient  access for customers and stall holders “We have made the tough decision to relocate to a new site The last market at Ferny grove will take place on Sunday 9th Brisbane Public transport customers now have access to a new multi-storey commuter car park with 905 parking spaces Access to and from the new site will be via Ferny Way while upgraded lighting and CCTV cameras will bolster car park security Stage 2 of the project now commences to allow construction of the new retail and residential apartments as well as the start of the connecting internal roads the park ‘n’ ride will be one of the largest in Southeast Queensland – with over 1400 parking spaces Federal Assistant Minister for Education and Regional Development said the Australian and Queensland governments were working together to invest in the infrastructure projects that would deliver what Ferny Grove residents need “This exciting project is jointly funded with a total investment of $22 million comprising $12m from the Australian Government and $10m from the Queensland Government,” he said “Queensland’s population is growing at a rapid rate and we’re committed to keeping up with that growth by investing in infrastructure projects like this across the state.” Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said park ‘n’ rides were a great way to encourage people onto public transport “The Ferny Grove upgrade will improve parking conditions to benefit motorists bike riders and public transport customers,” he said “Investing in park ‘n’ ride expansion projects supports the population growth in Southeast Queensland “Once finished the new TOD at Ferny Grove will create a local “neighbourhood village” that will provide food and beverage operators as well as increasing local housing supply with the construction of 82 new residential units in a location that has excellent rail and bus connections said his constituents had told him they wanted to use public transport more but didn’t have enough parking at the station to be able to use it effectively “Today we have provided a huge boost to parking at Ferny Grove Station so people can better access public Honeycombes Property Group’s much-anticipated $140 million mixed-use Ferny Grove Central development is underway and already shaping up as a vibrant retail and lifestyle centrepiece for Brisbane’s leafy northwest Two major retailers have been secured as long-term anchor tenants by the Queensland developer for the transit-oriented development’s 12,000sq m of retail space In cornerstone leasing deals for the project supermarket giant Woolworths and liquor chain Dan Murphy’s have signed up for a total of 7000sq m The leasing terms for the anchor tenancies range from 10 to 15 years Managing Director of Honeycombes Property Group said the mix and calibre of the duo of anchor tenants reflected both a pent-up demand for quality retail space in the area and the community focus of the Ferny Grove Central project “The huge level of interest from retailers in what we are creating at Ferny Grove Central has been unprecedented and just goes to show the heightened demand for quality retail opportunities in the area,” said Mr Honeycombe “Woolworths and Dan Murphy’s as the development’s two anchor tenants will provide the key to reinvigorating this end-of-line railway station precinct into a thriving neighbourhood village that combines retail “Our aim is to breathe new life into the precinct with Ferny Grove Central and getting the retail mix right is an important part in successfully achieving that as well as satisfying the future needs of the surrounding community.” The mixed-use development adjoins the Ferny Grove train station which caters for more than 5000 passengers per day that transit through the end-of-line transport hub Along with the 12,000sq m retail component and car parking it also will comprise a residential enclave featuring 82 luxury boutique apartments complete with a recreational deck as well as improved pedestrian and cyclist connections through the site Facilities for train passengers will also be enhanced with the introduction of a multi-deck commuter car park providing the convenience of undercover parking bays Mr Honeycombe said extensive community consultation had been undertaken by the company in refining the project’s design and other elements to ensure it provides the perfect blend of lifestyle and convenience for the area “Our approach has not only been forward-thinking and design-led but also very much community-focused to enable us to deliver a transit-oriented development that will be both transformative and embraced by local residents,” he said The leasing deals securing the project’s two retail anchor tenants come off the back of Honeycombes Property Group gaining development approval which has paved the way for the commencement of construction Woolworths has taken a 15-year lease over 3200sq m — the biggest tenancy in the retail centre — for a full-line supermarket fronting Samford Rd with a grocery pick-up service in the basement While the Men’s Shed movement is well established within Brisbane the sister movement of the Women’s Shed is far less so that is soon set to change with the formation of the Women’s’ Shed at Ferny Grove (WSFG)—a first of its kind in Brisbane It’s also one of the few across Australia with a primary focus on wood and metal working non-profit organisation that will provide a safe and inclusive space for women to work on projects along with offering a place for friendship Members of the Women’s Shed can expect the full Men’s Shed experience with woodworking practices and power tool use at their command household handy work was typically a job assigned to the man of the house in our modern world where many women are living independently and often outliving their partners skills honed in Women’s Sheds around Australia are becoming increasingly useful The need for this movement in our community could not be greater At the suggestion of Brisbane Tramway Museum Honorary Secretary an Expression of Interest meeting was held at The Brisbane Tramway Museum in early March Shan Fleming said the response from the initial session was overwhelming – clearly indicating a communal desire for this facility ‘The group was blown away by the numbers that turned up with almost 100 women across all age groups showing up or emailing to express their interest At this stage we are working through how to accommodate as many as we can from those who signed up on the day which is a nice problem to have,’ said Shan What is also really exciting about the establishment of the WSFG is that it will be the first Women’s Shed of its kind to ever grace Brisbane and its founding members made the effort of attending the Expression of Interest session to share their positive experiences and learnings and weekly meetings taking place to secure insurances and complete administrative duties the organisation is well on its way to opening its doors It is hoped that workshops will commence by mid/end April at The Brisbane Tramway Museum So, women of Brisbane, what are you waiting for, come on down and get your hands dirty!   Echo News is bound by the Standards of Practice of the Australian Press Council. The Honeycombes Property Group spearheads the entire Ferny Grove Central project, positioning it as a transformative force for the region. The official opening of the Ferny Grove Park ‘n’ Ride was attended by Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, alongside local State Member for Ferny Grove Mark Furner and Peter Honeycombe, the managing director of Honeycombes Property Group. The ceremony marked a significant step forward for the project, bringing together key stakeholders who played pivotal roles in its realization. Beyond its infrastructural contributions, Ferny Grove Central is also making a substantial economic impact. The development is generating more than 800 full-time jobs, with approximately 285 jobs directly tied to the construction project. This influx of employment opportunities underscores the broader positive effects of the urban renewal initiative on the local community. As Ferny Grove Central continues to take shape, it promises not only a revamped urban landscape but also a beacon of progress and prosperity for Brisbane’s north-west.
