The woman in striking distance of unseating Fremantle MP Josh Wilson says her strong result in the usually safe Labor seat means no major party is safe from the growing independent movement
Climate 200-backed independent Kate Hulett is on the verge of staging a major upset in Fremantle against one of Labor’s most progressive MPs

Hulett has secured a 17 per cent swing away from Wilson in the formerly safe Labor seat and is less than 200 votes ahead
Labor insiders are confident postal and absentee votes will break their way and secure them the lead
in a similar fashion to the state election results
Labor would treat Fremantle as a safe seat in the future at its peril
“This seat of Fremantle shows that no seat is safe,” she said
“You’ve got a great example of how you would take it up in a Labor seat to run an independent
we’ll see a whole new shift and a whole load of new independents
“What it shows is if you’ve got a good independent with a good community behind them
they can run in any seats across the country
this seat was the third-safest in the country
The Fremantle count might not be finalised for several days
with the electoral commission set to conduct a recount over the next few days
Hulett’s results mirror the tight race in Bean in the ACT
where independent Jessie Price is ahead of Labor incumbent David Smith by just 200 votes
Hulett secured a 26.4 per cent swing away from WA Labor minister Simone McGurk in the state election
But her odds of a repeat performance in the federal Fremantle electorate were dismissed within Labor
because the extended electorate boundaries included suburbs like Success and Cockburn
and were considered more conservative than inner-city Fremantle
Hulett said it was dismissive of commentators to say she wouldn’t be able to reach those people
if we speak to them and ask them questions and visit them
“I think you know those people in those suburbs were as engaged as everyone else
Hulett ran on issues including housing and opposing Woodside’s North West Shelf extension and AUKUS
Her links to environmental activism in the state were thrust into the spotlight during the state campaign after photos of her wearing a “Disrupt Burrup Hub” T-shirt resurfaced
A key adviser in her campaign is Jesse Noakes, who was fined for his role in the attempted protest outside Woodside boos Meg O’Neill’s home in 2023
the North West Shelf project would be a priority
“I want to make sure that the North West shelf extension
which is on the environment minister’s desk
and the processes are followed to the T before any decisions are made,” she said
“I think that is the thing that I’ll be raging about most.”
Wilson said voters hadn’t followed instructions on how-to-vote cards
When asked whether he should have been more outspoken on issues like climate change in his own party
Wilson said reform came from party structures
“As a Labor member I say to my community quite openly that if you want to see significant positive reform that can be embedded for the lasting benefit of communities around Australia
you need to do that through a proper process like the one that the Labor Party takes,” he said

The woman in striking distance of unseating Fremantle MP Josh Wilson says her strong result in the usually safe Labor seat means no major party is safe from the growing independent movement.
Climate 200-backed independent Kate Hulett is on the verge of staging a major upset in Fremantle against one of Labor’s most progressive MPs, repeating her efforts of seven weeks ago in the state seat of the same name.
As of 1pm on Monday, Hulett has secured a 17 per cent swing away from Wilson in the formerly safe Labor seat and is less than 200 votes ahead.
Labor insiders are confident postal and absentee votes will break their way and secure them the lead, in a similar fashion to the state election results.
Hulett said either way, Labor would treat Fremantle as a safe seat in the future at its peril.
“This seat of Fremantle shows that no seat is safe,” she said.
“You’ve got a great example of how you would take it up in a Labor seat to run an independent, and I think in three years, we’ll see a whole new shift and a whole load of new independents, which is so exciting.
“What it shows is if you’ve got a good independent with a good community behind them, they can run in any seats across the country. It’s not just Liberal seats.
“Every seat is no longer safe, this seat was the third-safest in the country, and now it’s marginal.”
The Fremantle count might not be finalised for several days, with the electoral commission set to conduct a recount over the next few days.
Hulett’s results mirror the tight race in Bean in the ACT, where independent Jessie Price is ahead of Labor incumbent David Smith by just 200 votes.
Hulett secured a 26.4 per cent swing away from WA Labor minister Simone McGurk in the state election, missing out by 500 votes.
But her odds of a repeat performance in the federal Fremantle electorate were dismissed within Labor, because the extended electorate boundaries included suburbs like Success and Cockburn, where she had no profile, and were considered more conservative than inner-city Fremantle.
Hulett said it was dismissive of commentators to say she wouldn’t be able to reach those people.
“Of course we can, if we speak to them and ask them questions and visit them, then you are reaching them,” she said.
“I think you know those people in those suburbs were as engaged as everyone else, and they felt heard and cared for.”
Hulett ran on issues including housing and opposing Woodside’s North West Shelf extension and AUKUS.
Her links to environmental activism in the state were thrust into the spotlight during the state campaign after photos of her wearing a “Disrupt Burrup Hub” T-shirt resurfaced.
A key adviser in her campaign is Jesse Noakes, .
Hulett said, if elected, the North West Shelf project would be a priority.
“I want to make sure that the North West shelf extension, which is on the environment minister’s desk, is very closely scrutinised, and the processes are followed to the T before any decisions are made,” she said.
“I think that is the thing that I’ll be raging about most.”
On Sunday, Wilson said voters hadn’t followed instructions on how-to-vote cards, which was helping him, given the high position his party, the Liberals and the Greens placed Hulett.
When asked whether he should have been more outspoken on issues like climate change in his own party, Wilson said reform came from party structures.
“As a Labor member I say to my community quite openly that if you want to see significant positive reform that can be embedded for the lasting benefit of communities around Australia, including my community, you need to do that through a proper process like the one that the Labor Party takes,” he said.

The Brisbane midfield masterclass that St Kilda suffered – and learned – from paid immediate dividends six days later.
The Saints “went to school”, as coach Ross Lyon put it, for a refresher course on how a good midfield performs, and put that education into practice to thrash an insipid Fremantle by 61 points at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

St Kilda’s victory ended their three-match losing skid and levels their win-loss ledger through eight rounds as they kept the Dockers to one goal in the first half and only five for the game.
Fremantle’s 5.3 (33) scoreline was the equal-10th-lowest in club history, and it took three final quarter goals to avoid being even lower.
“I was really pleased. It was a good response,” Lyon said afterwards.
The vision of a relaxed and satisfied Lyon smirking in the coaches’ box and leaning back in his chair, with arms crossed, spoke louder than his subdued post-match reaction.

“We know we’ve got a heap of work to do to improve. We’re not getting carried away,” he said. “We’ve already spoken about [moving on] to Carlton next week. We’re not a get-carried-away group, and I’m not a get-carried-away coach; good or bad. I’ll leave that to the others.”
Ex-Bulldog Jack Macrae starred for the Saints with video-game numbers of 38 disposals, 25 contested possessions, 14 clearances, 10 score involvements and eight tackles.
Macrae was also by Caleb Serong’s side at most stoppages, and with help from Jack Steele and Hugo Garcia, he held the Dockers ball magnet to 15 disposals - his lowest tally since his rookie season five years ago.
Serong entered the night averaging 29.6 disposals and a competition-best 15.9 contested possessions. Garcia (19, 10 tackles) and debutant Hugh Boxshall (16, four clearances) played strong complementary midfield roles.
Steele and St Kilda also limited Andrew Brayshaw to a modest 18 touches, while the third of Fremantle’s three-headed on-ball monster, Hayden Young, exited the match before half-time with what his coach Justin Longmuir said was a “serious” hamstring recurrence.
Lyon hailed, too, Liam Stocker’s job on Dockers recruit Shai Bolton, who mustered only seven scoreless disposals at 43 per cent efficiency.
The raw numbers illustrated the massive gulf between the teams; the Saints dominated disposals (379-286), inside 50s (61-34), clearances (50-22), centre clearances (13-5), contested possessions (151-103) and uncontested possessions (233-175).

“Caleb Serong is one who’s been a great player over the years, in terms of his contested ball and clearance,” Steele told this masthead.
“We didn’t have a direct tag or anything on him, but we just wanted to make sure we limited his damage around stoppage. That was a big part of the game: win the midfield battle, to win the game – and Andy Brayshaw, too. I thought we did a really good job on him.
“They’re both really great midfielders in their own right, and sometimes it’s very hard to stop contested players, but we were able to just be a little bit harder at the ball on most occasions.”
Steele was pleasantly surprised to learn the context of Serong’s modest output, and said the pressure-filled performance needed to be the “standard” for their midfield group.
Like Lyon, St Kilda’s captain did his best to keep the result in check, preferring not to even broach the topic of finals.
“I know we’re looking at next week already,” Steele said. “It’s a big game against Carlton, but I think if you were to tell us at the start of the year, with the injuries we had, and the young players we had in that we would be four and four after the tough scheduling we had, I’d say we’d be pretty happy.“The Saints hauled in 15 marks inside 50 to the Dockers’ four, with Cooper Sharman (four) and Mitch Owens (three) combining for seven goals.

At the other end, Callum Wilkie kept Josh Treacy goalless, while both Jye Amiss’ goals came in the last quarter when the game was effectively over.
A disappointed Longmuir said his 10th-placed team’s inconsistency was “not good enough” and that everyone, including himself, should be “questioning themselves”.
They have lost all three of their matches in Victoria this season.
“The first thing I look at after a performance like that, and any good leader should, is, ‘What did I get wrong?’,” Longmuir said. “I’m not sitting here blaming the players. I’ve got to look at my own performance this week, and, ‘Am I contributing to us being an inconsistent team?’. So, of course, I’m going to question myself. You can’t just sit here and say it’s all on the players.”
Fremantle Dockers chief executive Simon Garlick guaranteed coach Justin Longmuir’s future pre-game tonight – before the side was thumped by St Kilda.
Garlick has been a staunch supporter of Longmuir and the club employed him on an “ongoing” position that is reviewed annually.
He was asked pre-game if he could guarantee Longmuir would be coach of the club for round one in 2026, and he said “absolutely”.
“He’s doing a phenomenal job,” Garlick told ABC Sport.
“We’re building. For successful coaches like Mick [Malthouse] and others, who’ve done it for decades, he is still learning and growing, but we have a great team around him, and we are incredibly pleased with the job he’s doing.
“The amazing thing about the ongoing employment arrangement [no long-term contract to Longmuir’s name] – there is no practical difference [to other coaches].
“Every coach in the AFL now has a notice period, depending on the club. The days of signing a five-year contract or a 10-year contract like Mick once did and got paid out – they are over.”

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir spoke to the media post game.
Are you in a bit of shock?Shock is not the word. Yes, [I’m] disappointed. It was not the performance we wanted to put out there, clearly. [I] thought we had a good week... It was really clear what we wanted to do. Yes, we didn’t get any of those focuses that we went into the game with done. Yes, they played with a higher intensity, which we didn’t deal with. Yes, [it was] really disappointing.

Caleb had his lowest disposal tally in five years. What did you see from what they were doing? They seemed to be maintaining contact with him at every stoppage...Exactly, yeah. They did that with Andy as well, [and] shut those two down. Then their key player in there got off the chain in Macrae. Yeah, [it was] disappointing.
Is this team becoming too reliant on Caleb as the star? You could say that on the back of tonight, absolutely, especially around our clearance work. Youngy went out of the game, and it became a little bit thin in there.

Saints coach Ross Lyon spoke to Channel Seven post-game.
It’s great to see you smiling again...I’m always smiling. Well, not always. Not so much last week, right? Everyone was bagging me. There you go.
You got the response you wanted Ross?Yes, the players owned it. They owned it last week. You can only coach action. There are some clear things in our system swirling around. That sort of grit piece, grit, really when you have choices to do the harder stuff... I thought we did that all night.

Ross, there was a bit of commentary around the Garcia subbing last week and then you had a chat to him on the bench. Some people didn’t like it, others said it is fine, that’s football. He responded. He has got character...Who didn’t like it? I thought everyone liked it.
When Hugo did kick the goal though, we saw a big smile on your face. It is nice to see a young player respond and have an impact...Yes, 100 per cent. We backed them in. We have had a lot of young debutants. Can you have favourites? He is one. [He’s] so competitive [and] trained so hard. We were laughing because he missed the set shot. I said Hugo never misses. That was his third AFL goal. We had a chuckle. It was nice to breathe out and show the human side for two minutes.

St Kilda have ended their three-match losing skid in impressive fashion, demolishing – and embarrassing – Fremantle by 61 points at Marvel Stadium.
The Dockers kicked just one goal in the first half and their final 5.3 (33) scoreline was their equal-10th-lowest ever. It took two Jye Amiss goals and another in the last minute from Quinton Narkle in the fourth quarter to avoid an even worse place in club history.
Cooper Sharman kicked a match-high four goals for the Saints and Mitch Owens chipped in with three, while Jack Macrae was outstanding with 38 disposals, including 25 contested possessions and 14 clearances.
Just as valuable was Macrae’s tandem effort with Jack Steele, and later Hugo Garcia, to hold Dockers ball magnet Caleb Serong to only 15 touches, his lowest tally in five seasons.
They maintained contact with Serong at every stoppage and successfully dulled his influence.
Andrew Brayshaw, like star teammate Caleb Serong, had a quiet night for the Dockers.Credit: Getty Images
All of Sharman’s goals came in the second half, including three in a spectacular third term where he spun out of a tackle in the pocket and somehow kicked the ball through the big sticks.
His Jason Akermanis-inspired celebration was just as good, cupping his mouth with one hand and placing the other on his head.
St Kilda thrashed Fremantle’s much-vaunted midfield, headlined by Serong, Andrew Brayshaw and Hayden Young, and strangled the visitors’ ball movement whenever they did get their hands on the Sherrin.
The Saints won nearly 100 extra disposals, almost doubled the Dockers’ inside-50 count, and also dominated the clearances (50-22), centre clearances (13-5) and contested possessions (151-103).
The result levels St Kilda’s win-loss ledger through eight rounds and provisionally propels them into 11th place.
Young’s night ended early with another hamstring injury after the same injury delayed his season start, making for a nightmare trip east for Justin Longmuir’s men.
Fremantle have lost all three matches in Melbourne this season, following defeats to Geelong (GMHBA Stadium) in round one and the Demons (MCG) a fortnight ago.

Saints ruckman Rowan Marshall spoke to Channel Seven post game.
Q: How pleased were you with the midfield group? Because you absolutely dominated clearance and contested ball...So good. [It’s] an area we have been beat up in over the last couple of weeks. Jack Macrae… awesome. He really led from the front. Yes, really pleasing result from midfield group.
Q: How did you set yourself for a big one against their one-two ruck combination with Jackson coming back in? It looked as though you were really trying to challenge Darcy with the work you were putting in forward.Yes, it is hard. Darcy has his short bursts. He is so strong. You are pretty cooked and suddenly Jackson comes into the ruck. Yes, it is definitely a tough task. But [I’m] really pleased with the way the midfield went tonight.
Q: What about Cooper Sharman? Did you think he had that in him tonight?Yes, he is so good. We see that at training every week. He is becoming a really consistent forward now, and he is a real strong leader down there with the forwards at the moment. Yes, his celebrations are even better.
Cooper Sharman with a Jason Akermanis-like celebration.Credit: AFL Photos
Saints forward Cooper Sharman admitted he was inspired to bring out the “Aker” celebration after kicking one of his four goals tonight.
Retired Brisbane great Jason Akermanis made a similar gesture years ago after kicking a stunning goal.
“I pulled the Aker celie [celebration] – I saw him on one of the footy shows a couple of weeks ago and it sparked my memory,” Sharman told Fox Footy.
“It was a similar pocket, so I thought I’d give it a go.”

The Saint have thumped a hapless, woeful Fremantle at Marvel Stadium tonight.
St Kilda were harder at the contest, better-organised around the field, and far more dangerous in front of goal.
The Dockers were as poor as they’ve been since their earliest years in the AFL.
Their best players look hamstrung, their young players unsure, and their game style looks like that of a bygone era.
Surely, the spotlight has to go to Dockers coach Justin Longmuir after this performance.
This can’t just be travel yips about coming to Melbourne – they’ve been exposed tonight as not playing a style and manner that is competitive in modern AFL football.
They kicked five goals for the match, most of them in the last term when the contest was all but decided.
Hugo Garcia has joined the goal-kickers, snapping a goal after a horror kick from Freo was intercepted at half-back.
Ross Lyon has a grin on his face in the coaching box. Last week he was benching the young kid, and tonight he’s kicking a goal.
“How do you like that, Ross?” Anthony Hudson exclaimed on Fox Footy.
Mitch Owens has kicked his third goal with a screwing kick that bounced through.
Saints 88, Freo 27 with three mins to play.
The Dockers have finally found a little run and it has again resulted in Jye Amiss taking a mark and kicking a goal.
If only he had some decent supply tonight.

A disappointing night for Fremantle saw the Club suffer a heavy loss, kicking just 33 points — the Club’s equal tenth-lowest score ever.
Nothing went right for the travelling side, who recorded fewer contested possessions (151–103), inside 50s (61–34), clearances (50–22), and marks inside 50 (15–4).
A low-scoring first term from both sides saw Fremantle trail by only eight points, but from there, St Kilda steadily extended their lead at each break, eventually pushing the final margin out to 61 points.
Despite Fremantle’s defensive struggles, captain Alex Pearce (10 intercepts, four contested marks) stood tall, fighting hard both in the air and on the ground.

Speedster Corey Wagner (16 tackles, 13 disposals) had his moments, setting a new Club record for tackles in a single game.
Quinton Narkle, who made his Fremantle debut in last week’s win over the Crows, kicked his first goal for the Club late in the fourth quarter — but by then, the damage had already been done by the Saints.
Much of the battle was won and lost at the contest and out of the middle, with Fremantle’s -28 clearance differential the worst on Club record.
Things went from bad to worse for Freo with dynamic midfielder Hayden Young suffering a hamstring injury in the second quarter, taking no further part in the match after being subbed out.

After coming close to victory in the state seat of Fremantle in March, Independent Kate Hulett announced she would contest the federal seat of Fremantle.
Labor majorities were recorded at all 35 polling places used at the 2022 election, Labor's two-party vote rising above 70% in 11. Results ranged from 53.8% at the Tricolore Community Centre in East Fremantle to 83.1% at the John Curtin College of the Arts in Fremantle where both Labor and Greens candidates polled more than 38% of the first preference vote. While not shown on the map, Fremantle includes offshore Rottnest Island. (Click on polling place for results)
Hulett runs the 'Kate and Abel' shop in Fremantle, is a photographer, writer and artist and sits on the City of Fremantle destination marketing working group. She ran the Labor Party a very close race in the state seat of Fremantle at the WA election in March and shortly afterwards announced she would contest the Federal seat.

three goals) added some creativity and class in the front half
and Hugo Garcia's response after a tough week bore 19 disposals
leading to Fremantle's third lowest half-time score in its history at just seven points

St Kilda was effective in forcing the Dockers wide and slow

seven intercepts) and Callum Wilkie (eight intercepts
Despite the Dockers' defence's disorganisation at times
four contested marks) stood tall fighting hard in the air and on the ground
Garcia's responseAll eyes were on 19-year-old Saint Hugo Garcia after he was subbed out just 12 minutes into the second quarter last week
He was just one of many Saints who weren't getting the job done in the contest against the Lions
so Friday night was a chance for Garcia to sink or swim
competing hard with Docker Caleb Serong for long periods of the game
and his intent to compete was no clearer than when he impressively ran down Shai Bolton in the second quarter
As Bolton was running in space towards goal in the forward pocket
Garcia dug in to bring the Docker down and force the kick offline
and capped off the performance with a crowd-lifting goal in the last quarter
Contested footySt Kilda was let down by its inability to maintain possession out of the contest last week
but importantly it rebounded to start the game on Friday night
and work to worry Fremantle out of clean disposal or fast ball movement
Jack Macrae led the charge through the middle
but it was leaping forward Mitch Owens and debutant Hugh Boxshall who also rose to the challenge
More pain for YoungHe was the player Fremantle could least afford to lose
Caleb Serong was being blanketed at stoppage
and Andy Brayshaw had a revived Jack Steele to contend with for much of the game
so it was Hayden Young who was most likely to do damage through the contest for Fremantle
Young had shuffled off with a right hamstring concern
Friday evening's match was just Young's fourth of the season after back-to-back hamstring problems during pre-season

A quietly confident Kate Hulett fronted the media on Victoria Quay this morning to answer the question on everyone’s lips: How are you feeling being ahead of sitting member Josh Wilson in the race for the federal seat of Fremantle and defying all expectations
who was struggling to keep a lid on her ecstasy at repeating her astonishing performance in the State elections and being responsible for a massive swing away from Labor in an election that saw a red wave roll across the country
“Even if people’s expectations have been raised and they’re watching their politicians from now on
“Also what this shows is if you’ve got a good independent
they can run in any seat across the country
This seat was the third safest [Labor] seat in the country and it is now marginal,” said Hulett
Despite her extraordinary run in the State elections
in which she went within a whisker of beating Labor Minister Simone McGurk
analysts and academics were not expecting Hulett to challenge Wilson
who went into Saturday’s poll with a 16 per cent advantage from the previous election
They said repeatedly that Hulett could not extend her support from the Fremantle CBD and suburbs close to the city to the outer reaches of the federal electorate of Freo
Hulett has rendered her naysayers silent and drawn the media pack down to Fremantle
While Hulett acknowledge that her success will potentially oust one of Labor most progressive voices — she and Wilson are in alignment on a number of issues such as AUKUS and the live sheep exports — the Market Street shop-owner would not back down on her campaign theme of the major parties ordering their troops to march to single drum
but he is unable to have a strong voice because of the system
the system that is unable to make representatives speak on behalf of their constituents,” she said
Even though Hulett is struggling to process what is happening — “Here we are again … this is crazy!” – she feels that it is not fluke but where she and her team are meant to be
What it reflects to me is how little our representatives actually do talk to the community
It feels exactly what a representative should do — talk and listen and represent,” said Hulett
While Hulett and her team are not getting ahead of themselves — they have been here before and stumbled at the finish line because of the postal and absentee votes
which historically have favoured sitting members — there is a greater optimism in the camp than at this stage in the State election
This is because unlike the previous contest Hulett is being preferenced ahead of Labor by all the parties except One Nation (in the State election she was placed below Labor by the Liberals)
The Hulett brigade have also been told that there will be no more updates on the Australian Electoral Commission website as counting continues (don’t bother with the hourly check-ins
The next thing they hear from the AEC will be that they are either going to Canberra or spending the next few weeks on the Cappuccino Strip talking about what might have been
But at the moment the smiles on the faces of the Hulett team who gathered at the harbour today were bright enough to guide a ship into shore on the stormiest night

Fremantle Council has approved a 12-month trial of 40km/h speed zones on all local roads in Hilton
City officers were asked to explore opportunities for speed reduction in July this year when Council adopted two policies relating to traffic calming and safe streets
Community engagement on these policies revealed that traffic calming devices and speed reduction were their highest priorities for safer roads
who has led the charge for safer streets said traffic on residential roads is of huge concern to the community
“It is incumbent upon us to explore as many solutions as we can to address residents’ concerns regarding the safety of their roads
“I look forward to engaging with the community about the purpose of the trial and the subsequent outcomes
to be better informed about whether this is something that we’d like to implement in an ongoing fashion,” Cr Mofflin said
Hilton was chosen for its residential nature and residents’ willingness to host a trial
The 40km/h speed limit would be applied to local access roads only
Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said she hoped a reduction in speed would address some of the issues she’s observed recently
“I hope a change to 40km/h changes the Google Maps analytics
which has been routing people off main roads
for a supposedly quicker journey through the streets of Hilton
a lot of people who drive on local roads are locals – so if we all stick to the sign posted speed limit
then it slows everyone down to a safe speed,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said
Other Councillors spoke of the need to have signage in conjunction with physical traffic calming measures to be most effective
The Fremantle city centre and South Fremantle already have 40km/h speed zones
The City of Vincent is the only local government in Western Australia to have implemented a city-wide 40km/h speed limit
it has found a decrease in driver speeds and crashes and an increase in pedestrian and cyclist activity
The trial is subject to budget and agency approvals
A report would be brought back to Council at the conclusion of the trial for Council to consider a city-wide 40km/h zone
The seat of Fremantle is too close to call as a recount is needed to be done with the Independent Candidate for Fremantle Kate Hulett awaiting results
During the election count on Saturday evening
the votes were being counted as Labor vs Liberal
but it became clear Liberal was not in the running to take Fremantle
and instead it needed to be counted as Labor vs Independent
“Even if people’s expectations have been raised … that is a huge success because then our expectations are higher and then we want more and we demand more
if you’ve got a good independent with a good community behind them
they can run in any seat across the country,” Ms Hulett said

St Kilda have been giving up points across the board over the last five weeks
They are conceding above average fantasy points to forwards and inside midfielders
while also continuing their trend from past years under Ross Lyon of giving up points to defenders
Their setup behind the ball has consistently allowed scoring by opposing backs and this year they're currently conceding the most points in the league to attacking half backs (over 10 points per game above league average) and the third most points to designated kickers (at over 6 points per game above league average)
Fremantle have been quite stingy to midfielders and forward this year
but are giving up one of the highest scores to rucks and above average scores to the designated kicker and general defenders
Hugh Boxshall ($6,000) will make his debut and is quite possibly a SUB WATCH for his first match
If he does get the start he will be worth consideration given he is priced at the minimum on a single game slate
and he's been absolutely dominating in the VFL as an inside midfielder posting three straight scores of 122
Hugo Garcia ($9,600) / Mattaes Phillipou ($10,610) is going to be an interesting consideration on this slate
Garcia had a shocking game last week and was subbed early in the contest after a brutal verbal spray from Ross Lyon
But he has been getting midfield time and has shown upside of 110 fantasy points
and attending over 50% of their centre bounces for four straight weeks before being subbed early last week
around the same price point will be playing his first game of the season after getting injured in the preseason
But coming into the year he was expected ot be one of the biggest breakdown candidates in the league after finishing 2024 in the midfield
There's no reason to believe he won’t be getting midfield time now
however it might be a bit more of a split with a forward role as he works his way back
Hayden Young ($12,790) is just too low priced due to his injury interrupted start to the year
He has attended over 50% of the centre bounces the last two weeks and has racked up two 90 point games from his 3 matches this year
This is an elite matchup for inside midfielders with St Kilda giving up the second most points to the position over the last five games
Rowan Marshall ($15,970) has been down in form but will draw one of the best matchups in the league for rucks this season
He returned to a 100+ point game last week after three straight sub 100 point games
As a result of that form his price has come down under $16k and is much more of a palatable play then trying to split the difference on the Dockers two rucks who will share duties
Jordan Clark ($14,920) will be where I start with the Fremantle back stacks against the easiest team to play defenders against over the last three seasons
and he has loved playing at Marvel in past seasons with four games over 120 from his last 7 games on the ground

A Friday night flop has left the Fremantle faithful fuming
The coach and senior officials’ futures are being questioned
so too if this playing group is motivated to put in the hard yards to succeed
on the back of a pre-season of talk dominated about pushing for a first premiership
The Dockers were absolutely smacked by the Saints
a -28 result which is the biggest differential in club history
The worst part is Fremantle knew exactly what their ex-coach Ross Lyon would throw at them
and yet they couldn’t do anything to stop it
They were given no room to move as the Saints midfielders were strong in the contest and willing to put their head over the ball
resulting in the Dockers playing in the back half for the majority of the match
Star Caleb Serong was held to just 15 disposals – his lowest return since his 13th game in his debut year of 2020
His partner in crime Andrew Brayshaw had 18 disposals and one clearance
again raising doubts over Fremantle’s ability to get it done if their two midfield guns don’t
but it’s also seen as one of the most talented in the competition
asking post-game: “Are we up for the challenge that an AFL season confronts us with?”
They need answers to the tough questions – and quickly
The national stage and an audit awaits on Thursday against Collingwood
premiership captain and future Hall of Famer
he could be forgiven for tapering off his remarkable form as he enters the twilight of his phenomenal career
on Saturday night he delivered a career-best performance in game 232 while badly exposing the Eagles ruck deficiencies
He collected a personal best 35 disposals and game-high returns in touches
works hard defensively and is a target when drifting forward
His impact led Melbourne to a clearance domination (49-26)
once again highlighting the Eagles’ struggles in the ruck department
The reality is West Coast have battled to replace Nic Naitanui since he last played in 2022
Bailey Williams shouldered the load in 2023 and 2024
but has managed only four games this season
Matt Flynn was recruited in the hope he could play a lead role
but form and injury to date have been a challenge
West Coast’s midfield has had little impact this year
with new faces getting exposure and experience
If they can begin to limit the ruck damage
it will go a long way to stop the bleeding

as he faces a challenge from Climate 200-backed independent Kate Hulett in the port city seat
Mr Wilson had polled nearly 40 per cent — an almost five point drop from the 2022 election
with both the Liberal and Greens candidates preferencing Ms Hulett above Mr Wilson
leading to a narrow count between the pair
Mr Wilson said he had fought hard for the community in his nine years in Parliament
“Every election is different because of the candidate mix — there’s a different mix in Freo,” he said
“We have to wait see how the preferences go in circumstances where both the Liberals and the Greens have preferenced away from me
“But I’m grateful that the thoughtful and good judgement of the people of Fremantle is indicating to us that there are a significant number of people who aren’t following those instructions
and I hope that that’s because they respect the work I’ve done steadily on their behalf.”
Labor insiders told The West Australian their scrutineers had reported Greens votes splitting roughly evenly between Mr Wilson and Ms Hulett during points of the count last night
who was a vocal opponent of the live sheep export industry
said he believed he represented achievable reform which his electorate demanded
“I’ve always spoken from my own position of principle as a Labor member,” he said
“If you want to see significant positive reform that can be embedded for the lasting benefit of communities around Australia
you need to do that through a proper process like the one that the Labor Party takes.”
Ms Hulett — who narrowly lost the seat of Fremantle at the recent State election — said her second campaign had connected with the seat
Credit: Michael Wilson/The West Australian“Just like at the WA election
the count is too close to call and may be several days before we have an outcome
But we have already won in so many ways — Fremantle has shown what is possible when we do politics differently,” she said
this is no mean feat after nearly a century of Labor incumbency
but the community sentiment has moved in a way that is palpable and permanent
and people have voted for it — they want to take back power from the politicians to get meaningful action and better outcomes.”

The City of Fremantle is making changes to the collection of commercial waste in the CBD and suburbs
From 1 July 2025 the City will stop collecting waste from all commercial properties
Commercial operators who currently use City of Fremantle commercial waste services will be required to arrange their own waste collection prior to this date
The changes come following an extensive review of the City’s waste services and with the support of Council
Director of Infrastructure Graham Tattersall explained the reasons for the change
the City will be able to concentrate its resources on improving residential waste collection
pressure cleaning and emptying of public bins
because we know that having a presentable city is important to the whole community.”
that there are benefits for businesses too
the City will assist commercial customers with transitioning to private waste providers
who can tailor the collection of each business’s waste
recycling and FOGO to their unique needs,” Mr Tattersall said
Fremantle Council endorsed the discontinuation of these services at the 24 July 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting

How you view this game will largely depend on your allegiance
you would have loved what you saw – accountable midfielders
and a key forward that was capable of taking a mark and hitting the scoreboard
you may have just watched your hopes for success in 2025 go up in flames
my hope is that you endured a trying first half of footy and started to warm to the no-bullshit St Kilda Football Club after halftime
as they systematically dismantled the Dockers to the point of embarrassment
I am not really sure what Freo were attempting to do
but with their prime movers being closed down a little too easily for my liking
and their key forwards unable to impact the contest
There were not many winners for the Dockers – I reckon you could count them on one hand and still have a couple of fingers left free
and we’re gonna start with the bloke who had some soft journalists rushing to his defence last week when that nasty old Ross Lyon told him off for not playing the role the way the coach wanted
He didn’t need your defence – he just needed a chance to demonstrate that he could make amends

Odds: St Kilda ($2.10) vs Fremantle ($1.73)
Odds and lines provided with thanks to Dabble
Note that odds and lines can fluctuate throughout the week
After a three-game winning streak that saw them claim the scalps of Geelong and Port Adelaide
the Saints have lost their last three games on the spin
losing the last two in troubling fashion to the Bulldogs and Lions
The midfield has been absolutely smashed in those two games
and the Saints could desperately use some reinforcements in the middle of the ground as the likes of Jack Steele and Jack Macrae are currently looking a little one paced
they could get a little infusion of talent through the middle this week
as youngster Mattaes Philippou looks set to return from a leg injury to make his season debut while Hunter Clark could also return from an abdominal strain
Max King remains on the sidelines with a knee injury while promising youngster Alix Tauru
has been suspended for four games after an incident in the VFL last week
The Dockers kicked off the season with two straight losses to the Cats and Swans
but have since bounced back to win three of their next four games
the most recent of which a fantastic win over the Crows at home on Friday night
The star midfield duo of Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong continued their dominant start to the season
racking up 69 touches between them in the win
The Dockers could be boosted massively by the inclusion of Luke Jackson this week
after the ruck/forward missed the last three games with a hamstring injury
They still have a host of players on the injury/suspension list including Bailey Banfield
After the strong start to the season against quality opposition
this three-game stretch at Marvel Stadium promised to be an opportunity for the Saints to stake their claim on the 2025 season given their recent form under the roof
It couldn’t have gone much worse through the first two weeks and I can’t see it getting any better against what is another star-studded midfield
The Saints have been absolutely obliterated in the midfield over the last two weeks
losing the inside 50 count 69-31 against the Bulldogs and then 66-43 against the Lions
Tigers and Eagles have worse inside 50 differentials this season
I think this gets ugly again for the Saints on Friday night
who lost by 17 points to the Dockers under the roof last season

Josh Treacy 2+ Goals - Just a few behind the Coleman leader this season and has kicked multiple goals in five of his last six games
The Saints have got Dougal Howard back but still look undermanned in defence and allowed Eric Hipwood to snag four on the weekend
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera 25+ Disposals - Was injected into the lacking Saints midfield at times throughout the loss to the Lions and his numbers benefitted
racking up over 30 for the first time this season
Has only missed the 25 mark once in seven games
Hayden Young 20+ Disposals - Has been back in the Dockers lineup for three games now and has cleared the 20 disposal mark in his last two straight
Had a field day against the Saints last year with 27 touches and three scoring shots (despite kicking 0.3)

Pyrotechnics and oversized fantastical puppets collide with living sculptures and a tightwire love story in Fremantle this Easter
From humble beginnings to the largest street arts festival in Australasia
Fremantle International Street Arts Festival (FISAF) is celebrating 25 years of awe-inspiring acts hosted through the streets of Freo
Starting off in 1999 as a celebration of busking culture
the festival has transformed into a showcase of groundbreaking and unusual street theatre from around the globe
This year’s FISAF features Australian premiere shows from Japanese Double Dutch group Haribow and Imagicario’s wondrous puppet creations from Canada
Perth audiences will get another chance to witness Living Sculptures: ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours’
an Indigenous-led dreamtime re-imagining that premiered at Sydney Festival and toured Joondalup Festival last year
FISAF’s after dark offering sees a program chock-full of music
led by ‘Amor’ from France’s Compagnie Bilbobasso–a wild pyrotechnic display in Walyalup Koort
performing at this year’s festival is a moment of coming full circle
One half of the circus act ‘Hands Some Feet’
Jeromy is an ex-Perth local who honed his craft in Fremantle at Circus WA
Now residing in Finland with his partner Liisa Nuuk
the pair have created a show that defies definition
My first proper performing experience with Circus WA was at FISAF back in 2008 at the Sail and Anchor pitch,” Jeromy said
from early circus training days to hanging out at my Dad’s shop nearby growing up
It’s fantastic to be able to bring this show home.”
The name ‘Hands Some Feet’ refers to the couple’s transformation of their hands and feet into creative tools via Jeromy’s juggling act
and Liisa’s performance as a tightwire artist
The interaction and unexpectedness of the meeting of these two mediums creates a mesmerising performance staged across two pitches during the festival
Jeromy was encouraged to go international following his early training in Fremantle
and it was there in Belgium at the École Supérieure des Arts du Cirque he met Liisa and they decided to combine their specialities
“Our show is a little bit autobiographical – our relationship was quite fresh when we developed the concept,” Jeromy said
“It’s an unconventional love story between two people and the hiccups relationships invariably experience along the way
live music and physical theatre with a bit of comedy peppered in.”
Jeromy and Liisa have shown their act throughout the European outdoor circuit and will perform at the Sail & Anchor and Esplanade Park pitches at FISAF
FISAF has gone from strength to strength since its founding
with internationally renowned street theatre alongside local and interstate acts
Living Sculptures: ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours’ is a groundbreaking
site-specific piece fusing traditional First Nations dance
A collaboration between Arc Circus and Luther Cora and his team from Yugambeh Aboriginal Dancers
the show tells a significant dreamtime story via a living
breathing work of art set against the backdrop of the trees in Esplanade Park
An exciting addition to FISAF’s After Dark programming
‘Amor’ from France’s Compagnie Bilbobasso combines Argentinian Tango with impressive large-scale pyrotechnics
two performers act at the centre of a whimsical
domestic bullfight and tell the tale of a love story gone wrong
Creative Producer Brendan Coleman said they were thrilled to welcome Amor to this year’s festival lineup
“Every evening from 7pm audience will find themselves witness to both a love story and an argument
featuring explosions and dances with fire right here in Fremantle,” he said
“This 25th anniversary year holds a bumper lineup – cabaret duo Otto and Astrid
otherworldly oversized puppets from Imagicario
Japanese rope wizards Haribow (who you may have caught on Britain’s Got talent) and comedy
acrobats and everything else audiences have come to expect from the festival
as well as a packed after dark music lineup.”
FISAF wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of sponsors and local business partners: Tourism WA
