Maine – Over two dozen businesses in northern Maine’s St
John Valley region have contributed to an upcoming raffle to help the Frenchville Fire Department obtain a new off-road vehicle to rescue people on the town’s ATV trails
Town Manager David Cyr said the department currently has a snowmobile equipped to rescue people on the trails during the winter
but they don’t have the same capability in the summer
It’s looking to buy a heavy duty type of ATV known as a utility terrain vehicle
so you’ve got to rely on whoever’s available to provide us with an ATV,” Cyr said
Cyr said he and officials have been talking about getting a rescue ATV since 2022
when an individual died from an injury while cutting trees on a local trail
and unfortunately he was injured fatally,” Cyr said
we started having discussions about if we should have our own ATV equipped to move somebody in the event of a fatality or an injury.”
He said another advantage of purchasing a UTV will be that it can be outfitted with a water tank to help the fire department respond to forest and grass fires.
“The machine will serve a couple of purposes,” he said
Assistant Fire Chief Eric Blanchette said they are looking at a Can-Am Defender 6-wheeler equipped with a 6-foot bed
He said this would easily allow emergency responders to fit an individual in the back and transport them to safety
Cyr said the town has roughly 15 miles of ATV trails within the community
Cyr said Frenchville received a $10,000 challenge grant from an anonymous benefactor to help the fire department purchase extrication equipment.
After launching a successful fundraising campaign and purchasing the equipment
Cyr said the benefactor once again reached out to the town in 2024
offered to do another $10,000 matching grant and asked what equipment Frenchville would need
the town decided to use the challenge grant toward the UTV
which is estimated to cost roughly $31,000 altogether
The board of selectmen voted to spend $11,000 in town money on the vehicle
Cyr said some of this funding has been offset with $1,000 from Versant as part of the company’s 100-year anniversary grant program
He said the town has also sought donations from the private sector
a separate organization that raises money for the department
will be responsible for the remaining $10,000
The club’s fundraising plan includes distributing raffle tickets that will be drawn during an April 27 chicken barbecue
Tickets are $10 each and over two dozen businesses from the region donated prizes ranging from 100 gallons of oil
three months worth of free garbage pick-up and gift cards for grocery stores and restaurants
“Between this fundraiser and our chicken barbecue in April
we think that we can achieve the $10,000 goal that the club is going to be responsible for,” Blanchette said
Blanchette and Fire Chief Peter Parent said the department usually just does the chicken barbecue each year
Parent said the tickets were distributed earlier last week and are selling quickly
Blanchette said it has been nice to see so many nearby businesses contribute to the cause
“Each firefighter hit up a few different businesses,” he said
“And a lot of them are more than willing to put something forward to contribute to this
Students from Frenchville State School began their Walk to School this morning from the renewed playground at Eichelberger Park
Chair of Council’s Parks Committee Councillor Cherie Rutherford said it made her very happy to see the new playground being used by students
“It was an absolute pleasure to go along to Frenchville State School’s Walk to School event this morning
and I really want to thank the school for including us,” said Cr Rutherford
“National Walk Safely to School Day promotes the health benefits of getting out and being active
and in my opinion there are few better incentives for kids to get outside than having a great playground in their own neighbourhood.”
Division 2 Councillor Neil Fisher said that Frenchville State School students should feel proud of the renewed playground and commended the school for their proactive interaction with Rockhampton Region Council in the Frenchville community
“Students at Frenchville have been involved in the new park since plans were first suggested last year
and we have heard their thoughts on the colours and the equipment,” said Cr Fisher
“I hope that the students really feel a sense of ownership and pride over the new park.”
Frenchville State School Deputy Principal Bill Smith said that he is very happy to see this kind of connection between the School and Council
“It was great to see our students have input into the development of the playground
and wonderful for them to see their impact in the community.” said Mr Smith
The new playground equipment includes a double tower with spaces for climbing
The equipment caters for children between the ages of 2 and 12 years.

Wendy Goldston has drawn on her almost 30-year career to design and lead an unparalleled program which is transforming learning and bringing out the best in identified high achievers at her Central Queensland primary school
Goldston, who has been recognised as one of Australia's leading educators, winning a prestigious 2020 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award, along with a number of other accolades for her work
launched the BLOOM program at Frenchville State School in 2018
with the overarching goal of helping Year 3-6 children reach their full potential
BLOOM focuses on the development of the General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculum through creative real-life and life-like learning experiences
It offers complex unfamiliar challenges intended to develop BLOOMer capability to live and work successfully in the Twenty-First Century
The Educator speaks to Goldston about the inception of the program
the impact it has had on teaching and learning
and what lies ahead for her school’s community in 2021
TE: Can you tell us what initially led you to create the BLOOM program
Frenchville State School has a rich history of high achievers; however
it was during a School Review that “providing enrichment for high achieving students…(is) an area for further development” became a priority
Some high achievers were showing signs of disengagement
attendance fatigue and there was a distinct lack of focused intensive challenge for their ability level
After intensive research and investigation
hands-on nature of BLOOM that challenges students to work in real life and life-like situations is one of its key features
TE: What kind of impact is the program having on teaching and learning at the school
From my perspective BLOOM is having an incredibly powerful impact in all spheres – socially
Preparing students for the 21st century: Parents
teachers and I all note the significant improvement in mindset for our high achievers
resilience and learning how to use experience setbacks and learn from feedback
(High achievers are not used to ‘failure’ or genuine challenge and must be taught how to ‘cope’ and ‘react’ in such situations)
Year 5 Literacy BLOOMers have ‘walked in the shoes’ of the impoverished children of our world
After carrying 6 litres of water throughout the school for two hours to experience ‘walking for water’
BLOOMers have organised and held a MAD (Make a Difference) Fundraiser
have built wells for entire African and Asian communities
Year 4 Literacy BLOOMers last year adopted an endangered Southern Hairy Nosed wombat after becoming Wombat Warriors
5 and 6 Literacy BLOOMers raised funds to adopt two orphaned Sumatran orangutans
TE: Are there any other notable outcomes from the program you’ve observed
BLOOMers never miss school on their BLOOM day/s
BLOOMers are passionately committed to the program and they conscientiously visit the BLOOM room on the first day of each term to see what interactive display I’ve created for them to immerse themselves in (displays change each term)
Parents evidence the incredible growth in general knowledge and thinking skills with their BLOOMers
witnessing it daily and hearing about their excitement and passion for BLOOM and all it teaches them
Sense of ‘belonging’ and ‘pride’ in becoming a BLOOMer and aiming for the stars to ensure they remain as part of the program
along with the academic improvement in data
TE: Are there any new and exciting developments planned for BLOOM in 2021
2021 sees BLOOM continue to ‘bloom’
Plans are underway for a student-created accrescent website called BLOOMTube that will assist students
parents and community nationally and internationally to support primary school learning – important in this age of online and remote learning
in collaboration with the Centre for Learning and Wellbeing (Emerald)
a professional development program for Gifted and Talented learners which will highlight BLOOM
A passionate educator with global experience joins the Junior School to champion student growth
The program will help Year 7-9 students develop healthy screen habits and make better decisions online
Don't miss the chance to spotlight your school's success and impact
