History will be made on a couple of fronts when pacers hit the track on Sunday afternoon at Gatton
It will be the first time a standardbred race meeting has been held at the Lockyer Valley Turf Club
Strong fields are locked in for the maiden Gatton harness racing meeting with eight races set down for decision
it will be a return of the Darling Downs Harness Racing Club who will host the meeting at Gatton on the grass
The DDHRC are prominent on the show circuit across regional Queensland but have not run a registered race meeting for a little over five years
Prominent broadcaster Anthony Collins was president of the DDHRC for a period of almost a decade and long pushed for a return for the entity
Collins calls all three codes of racing on a regular basis
The club formerly raced at Toowoomba’s Clifford Park before hosting one meeting annually at Warwick on Fathers’ Day
Collins – who also prepares a small team of pacers – is proud to see his beloved DDHRC back up in lights this Sunday
While Collins is no longer president of the club
“The Darling Downs club has regrouped in recent times and the club has a long history,” Collins said
the Darling Downs club has remained as a registered club across those many years
“The club still exists and the membership base is growing
“We have quite a strong committee there with a few notable breeders across the Darling Downs and quite a number of industry participants in the Lockyer Valley
The Gatton meeting will be the return of the DDHRC which will lead into a race day back at the Warwick Turf Club in early November
The club are hopeful of then running another meeting at Toowoomba’s Showgrounds following the Warwick race day
Kilcoy will often host their own harness meetings on the grass
which are strongly supported by the local community
DDHRC secretary Brendan Sippel is hopeful the people of the Lockyer Valley get on board with harness racing in their area
“The core function of our club is to promote the sport to a wider audience,” Sippel said
“It’s a family-based sport with generational participants and it’s good fun
but most people in the Lockyer Valley haven’t seen the trots on the grass
The race meeting will have TAB status on Sunday and be headlined by the Gatton Grass Cup
“We need a permanent home – which we haven’t had for quite a long time – and the Lockyer Valley could just be the place for it,” Collins said
Warwick-based trainer and driver Dayl March will wear a couple of hats at the meeting on Sunday
March is the vice-president of the DDHRC and will also have a couple of runners from his barn engaged
“We are a club without a home and to be able to race and say we are still around is important,” March said
“The committee members are working hard to see if the Lockyer Valley can be a venue for us going forward
“It is very pleasing as a club to put something together
“There have been some very hard workers on our committee and behind the scenes
without a few of them then we wouldn’t be running this meeting.”
The 54-year-old March said he was pleased to see the strength of the fields on Sunday and was glad to see a number of prominent trainers and drivers engaged at the meeting
March has Perfect Feeling entered in the third race from Gatton on Sunday as well as stable mate Our Major Day in the Gatton Grass Cup
Our Major Day was beaten by just over six metres at Albion Park on Tuesday and March thinks the gelding will be competitive over 1850 metres in the Cup
“I have only just got Perfect Feeling back to my stable and he has not raced for about a month or so,” the Warwick-based trainer said
“I have never had him on the grass so you are never sure how they will go
“Our Major Day’s run on Tuesday was really
It is a strong race on Sunday and if Our Major Day puts in the performance he put in on Tuesday then he will be thereabouts.”

In one of the closest grand finals in Toowoomba Rugby League history
Gatton Hawks won in extra time 24-20 over Valleys Roosters at Clive Berghofer Stadium on Saturday night
The scores were locked at 20-20 at fulltime with Hawks winger Cameron Bundock scoring in the second minute of extra time to give Gatton a famous victory
Valleys Roosters started the grand final the better with Denzel Burns and Todd White scoring in back-to-back sets to make the score 12-0 after 13 minutes
The Roosters did have the momentum for a lot of the first half and they deserved to be in front
Not one player was giving an inch in an absorbing match
The match settled down but the physicality did not wane
Player of the match and the John McDonald Medallist
scored the first of his two tries in the 27th minute as the Hawks grinded their way back into the match
Hughes chimed in to the backline to score close to the posts to get the Hawks back into the match at 12-6
Hughes put a clever kick in behind Roosters line for Mene Bakabaka to score and level it 12-12 with 10 minutes remaining in the half
Dwayne Duncan kicked a penalty to get the Roosters into the sheds 14-12 in front
This brutal contest continued after the break with end-to-end play the norm
As the game went on the metre gains from each side were opening up the match more and more
that man Joel Hughes again finished off a good Gatton raid when he scored to get the Hawks in front for the first time 18-14
Valleys dug deep and as the clock wound down Cory McGrady was trying everything to lift his side
He was tremendous and with 15 minutes remaining he set up Josh Keoller to return the Roosters to the lead 20-18
The last 15 minutes was not for the faint hearted and the game was a credit to both teams' young men who put on one hell of a display
Gatton opted to run the ball but Valleys courageous defence held firm
Gatton kicked a penalty goal with five minutes remaining to level the scores 20-20
Hughes attempted to win the game with a field goal
but the drop kick went wide making the game go into extra time
Valleys kicked off the overtime with their chase excellent and they kept Hawks in their 10-metre area for the first three tackles
But good hit ups from the Hawks allowed Tom Luhrman to break a few tackles on the last tackle to get over halfway
Luhrman found Hawks five-eighth Travis Turnbull
who scooted through the smallest of gaps to sprint well into Valley’s half
who scored match winning try in the south-western corner to win an epic grand final for Gatton 24-20 after 82 minutes
It has been a very long time since an A grade grand final has gone into extra time
This match deserved to go into overtime as we saw two excellent teams
Hughes was amazing all game and did not panic
Dalton Desmond-Walker and Ben Haviland were good upfront
Mene Bakabaka’s first half performance was inspirational and was rewarded with a four pointer
whilst Olly Bichel and Joel Brett were excellent in their metreage grind
Wingers Tye Gray and Cameron Bundock turned the opposition around time and time again
Komiti Vetemotu was superb all night as was Cory McGrady with Denzel Burns always dangerous and co-captain Jason Sharpe inspirational
Josh Keoller ran with purpose all night with Todd White also going well
But it was Gatton’s premiership after they finished the regular season minor premiers - their third premiership since their inclusion in the Toowoomba Rugby League competition
Shannon Hicks goals) def Valleys 20 (Denzel Burns
Highfields Eagles women’s team claimed their first premiership by winning the grand final 28-20 over three-time premiers Gatton
Gatton scored first when Sarah Hoger got over the line after three minutes
Gatton had all the ball early and the momentum had to swing and after a few repeat sets on Gatton’s line
Eagles captain Ketlyn Collie crashed over to level the scores 4-4 after nine minutes
Highfields had most of the momentum in the first half
and Kim Dore split the Eagles defence to send Sarah Hoger in for her second try three minutes before half time
A Courtney Robertson break set up the next try for Gatton when Bonnie Zappa played the ball almost right on the Eagles try line for Bridie Gray to simply pick the ball up from dummy half and place it on the try line to score
That made Gatton’s lead 14-4 four minutes into the second half
Nolan and Dore were showing for the Hawks but somehow the Eagles always seemed capable of coming back - and come back they did
They scored the next three tries to lead 20-14
Gatton just could not stop the momentum swing and Highfields' crispness in attack was excellent
Their line speed at the advantage line was impressive and they starved Gatton of the ball to basically take them out of the contest
Highfields props Katelyn Collie and Taylor Hancock were superb
They both made huge metre gains to set rolls for their side
Lock Eliza Morcom never stopped all day and was rewarded with the player of the grand final medal
Courtney Jackson tries; Abbey Markey 2 goals) def Gatton 14 (Sarah Hoger 2
Valleys Roosters defended their 2023 premiership with a 28-20 win over Warwick Cowboys
Valleys had a lot of the momentum and they led 10-4 with tries from Declan Buckley and Antonie Roma
Warwick’s Micheal Marshall scored their first try
Momentum changed to Warwick late in the first stanza
mainly due to Joey Wagner being introduced into the game
His side lifted when he scored to make it 10-8
Reserve grade leading pointscorer Matt Henry kicked the conversion from the sideline to level the scores 10-all and we had a game on our hands
But then the turning point - Wagner’s try was 90 seconds from half-time but Valleys finished off the half when winger Rex Koroi scored out wide to give the Roosters back the lead 14-10 at the break
Valleys player of the match Harrison Burns scored two tries in the 40th and 62nd minutes in an inspirational performance
Valleys led 20-10 at the 40th minute but Warwick dug deep in their best period of the match when Lance McGrady Dennison scored out wide for the Cowboys
Matt Henry stepped up to kick the sideline conversion
But just two minutes later Anthony Pain scored the try of the match when he scored out wide in an inspirational run
It was an important moment as it created the largest margin in the match at that time
Burns scored his second try to all but sew up the match
but big 'Freddie' Vite grabbed a consolation try for Warwick in the last minute to give Valleys a 28-20 victory
Burns and his halves partner Jaren Bender were superb for Valleys
The Valleys front rower never stopped all day
Veteran Joe Mau was fantastic for his team especially in the first half
He proved very difficult to contain right throughout the match
halfback Dan Howard was their best with Nick Pails and 'Freddie' Vite trying hard all day
Captain Eamon Brownlie and Joey Wagner also played well
Anthony Pain tries; Jaren Bender 2 goals) def Warwick 20 (Micheal Marshall
'Freddie' Vite tries Matthew Henry 2 goals)
The Dalby Diehards won the 2024 TRL Under 19 grand final after defeating Southern Suburbs Tigers 32-18
Dalby were the form side going into the grand final as minor premiers and having won the major semi-final against Valleys for a berth in the grand final
Diehards started the better scoring the first two tries to lead 12-0 until Souths scored through their centre Pat Sanderson to get the back in the game after 15 minutes to make it 12-6
The next 20 minutes was end-to-end play with plenty of skill
but neither side added points before half-time
Dalby were pressuring Souths line when Tigers' Ronan Delaney grabbed an intercept to run 80 metres to score and it was soon 12-all with the conversion
It showed Dalby that Souths were not going away - the Tigers showed this determination all season
The Diehards rallied and lifted to score the next three tries through lock Lyucian King-Togia
the latter who scored a good individual try to get the Diehards to a 16-point lead with eight minutes remaining
Matty Simpkin scored a well-deserved try for Souths with three minutes remaining
Then Dalby centre Matthew Drews put the icing on the cake to score at fulltime to give the Diehards the game 32-18
Dalby five-eighth Joey Sankey won the player of the match
He was tremendous and kept his game management head on all game
Joe Gillett and Lyucian King-Togia were excellent in the middle with Brock Sankey superb at the back
Souths halves Tait Cameron and Jake Durie tried hard
Matthew Drews tries; Joey Sankey 4 goals) def Souths 18 (Pat Sanderson
Semi-Finals: Weekend Preview - Mal Meninga Cup
Mackay and Cairns women eager to dethrone favourites Townsville in Foley Shield
Everything you need to know: XXXX Foley Shield 2025
The 2024 Hutchinson Builders A Grade grand final will be contested this Saturday at 6.30pm when Valleys Roosters take on Gatton Hawks at Clive Berghofer Stadium
Both teams deserve their berth in the grand final after impressive seasons
Valleys qualified for the grand final when they defeated Gatton two weeks ago in the major semi-final 42-16
Gatton won well against Warwick Cowboys in last weekend’s preliminary final 38-24
This match on Saturday will be a different affair
Each club have excellent mixes of youth and experience within their line-ups
Valleys last won the premiership in 2019 when they defeated Warwick 24-16
whereas Gatton last won a premiership in 2013 when they defeated Valleys 32-20
The Hawks last contested the grand final in 2022 when they lost to Wattles 51-20
Roosters co-coach Matthew Schulze was at the helm in their last premiership
He and fellow co-coach Josh Barrett will be priming their team for the decider come Saturday
Flint won three premierships as a player and a coach for the Southport Tigers in 2008
His team has gone one better so far this season after last year’s preliminary final defeat
The fullbacks - Gatton’s Luke Self and Valleys’ Denzel Burns - are experienced players and both can change a game in their own right
Valleys halves Dwayne Duncan and Cory McGrady are probably the most experienced pairing in the competition
while Gatton’s halves in Travis Turnbull and Joel Hughes came together midway through the season
They are young and have worked well together this year
The hookers - Valleys’ Hugh Sedger and Gatton’s Tom Luhrman - are the form rakes this season
Both have excellent work rates and can influence the ruck
The wingers in this game all have plenty to offer
Valleys' Alex Hinch and Matt Moore opposing Gatton’s Cameron Bundock and Tye Gray
Hinch and Bundock are excellent under the high ball
Gray is an experienced campaigner and has plenty of speed
while young gun Matt Moore never dies wondering and is safe in defence
Roosters Josh Keoller and Komiti Vetemotu as well as Gatton’s Leonard Thomas and Joel Brett have been brilliant for their respective clubs
Valleys captain Jason Sharpe is racing against the clock to be fit for the clash
Western Clydesdales’ Todd White played well when he covered for him in the major semi final
Gatton’s Olly Bichel played very well in the preliminary final and is primed for another big performance come kick off
The big men in these clashes are always great to watch
Valleys' Jon Palavi and Harry Tombs are in excellent form
as are Gatton’s Ben Haviland and Dalton Desmond-Walker
The centre match up will go a long way to deciding the contest
Valleys' Barney Litidamu and Dylan Chown versus Nick Short and Blake Appo - the form centre pairings of the competition
Both Short and Litidamu and big strong players
Grand finals are always tough affair and not for the faint hearted
The reliance of their bench players is imperative
Valleys have good options with veterans such as Chris Gesch and other unsung heroes the likes of Sam Betros and Daniel Bain
while Eddie Dainteri and Josh Stanton are also in the equation for the Roosters
Shannon Hicks would give his side valuable direction
while Allan Morris and Tyrone Faulkner have made good impact off the bench all year
Others players ready to be involved off the benches are Dom Pincombe and Steven Bushe
All these players have contributed throughout the season
The final make-up of the sides will be clearer closer to the day
this match is shaping up as memorable grand final between two worthy contestants
and touch judges Ethan Garton and Bridie Prendergast
The two form sides of this year’s competition
Their major semi-final game was one of the games of the year
They again meet and this time it is for keeps
It's the three-time premiership winner Gatton against the young guns Highfields in a much-anticipated match
The Hawks are going for their fourth premiership in a row to create their legacy in the Toowoomba Rugby League fraternity
whereas the Highfields have been building over the last seasons into a force to be reckoned with
They are both well coached with Jasin Buhse at the helm of the Hawks and coach of the year Wayne Collie guiding his young Eagles
Both teams ooze talent with Courtney Robinson
and rookie of the year Mia Davies in good game-breaking form for Gatton
Morgan Prentice has been great at the back for Highfields as has centre pairing Reagan McMillian and Lucy Davis
with Davis grabbing a double in the preliminary final
Hawks' Libby Dunn and Eagles’ Courtney Jackson have been in fine form over this finals series
Hookers Bonnie Zappa (Gatton) and Abbey Markey (Highfields) are playing well for their respective sides
with Hawks' Caitlan Nolan and Eagles' Eliza Morcom in the form of their lives at lock
Big game players in Hawks' Kim Dore and Eagles' Katelyn Collie may just hold the key in this match
Both are experienced players and can settle the game down when needed
This match is shaping up as the match of the day as there is a struck match between them
history will be made irrespective of which team wins

The Warwick Cowboys have their attempt to win that elusive premiership
While the A grade side came close this year
The reggies’ cupboard has been empty for 15 years
They have been the team to beat this season - they are the only side in all grades to lose just one match all season
They won well against Wattles in the major semi-final a couple of weeks ago
The Cowboys face last year’s premiers Valleys in what will be an intriguing contest
Valleys have been living by the seat of their pants in this year’s final series
suffering a heartbreaking loss in the last second of play against Wattles in the qualifying final
They then had a 15-minute extra time win over Gatton in the elimination final in week two
The Roosters showed no ill effects of the first two weeks with a 28-10 win over Wattles in last weekend’s preliminary final
The last time these two sides met was in Round 15 when Warwick defeated Valleys 19-6
they grinded away on that day - especially in the second half - and that is what this Cowboys side has laid its hat on all season
It’s been a long while between drinks for the Cowboys
whereas Valleys are the defending premiers this year
plus the they have won games in many ways this final series
and their A grade side also contest the grand final as per last year
Joel Saffy and Anthony Pain are the Roosters players backing up from last year’s win
while Cowboys’ Mitch McMahon and Morgan Taylor were in the Warwick A grade grand final side in 2019
and halves Dan Howard and Lance McGrady are the players to watch for Warwick
Winger Jeff Ross also seems to find the try line for the Cowboys
it's Uraia Koroi and Curtly Hammond - Koroi scoring one of the tries of the season in last week's preliminary final
Jaron Bender's kicking game is second to none
The Dalby Diehards are in form going into this game
with a handsome 34-10 win over Valleys in the major semi-final
Souths have reached the main game of the year the hard way
including one in extra time against Brothers in week two
The last time these sides met was in Round 11 of the regular season when Dalby defeated Souths 20-4 in Dalby
A lot of water has gone under the bridge since that match three months ago
The young Tiger cubs have not lost a match since
Dalby have not lost a match since Round 8 against Valleys (24-26) on June 1
Joey Sankey (Dalby) and Tait Cameron (Souths) are the “go to” players for their respective sides
their teammates have also been playing well
Sankey’s halves partner Dan O’Callaghan and centre Matthew Drews are also in good form
Drews has played a number of A grade games and also making a difference in the top grade
Bailey Rathmell also played many games for A grade and will be ready to go come kick off
The Diehards have a formidable forward pack with Toby Harms
Fletch Prendergast and Joseph Gillett all playing well in the finals
Tigers too have a good pack with props Jack Fogarty and Matty Simpkin leading the way
Centre Tom Fry and fullback Ronan Delaney are the scoring machines of the under 19 competition this year
They also have good pace with Darnell Blades out wide
It has been a while since these clubs have tasted success
Dalby won the 2021 under 18 title and they lost last season’s preliminary final
whereas the Tigers have not tasted success in this grade since their famous 2019 under 18 side
Each club’s supporters will arrive in their numbers come kick off
The match will start an amazing TRL grand final day

Steve Vai once said that the guitarist in question
“comes closer than anyone else to being the best guitar player that ever lived”
The late Danny Gatton had a nickname: “The Humbler.” As in
Gatton, who also was known as “the Telemaster” and “the world's greatest unknown guitarist” (a nickname he shared with his friend Roy Buchanan) could play country, rockabilly, jazz, and blues guitar with equal authority – and sometimes with a beer bottle
In this legendary clip from his 1991 Austin City Limits appearances
some suds find their way onto his Fender Tele's neck
So Gatton whips out a towel to wipe off the beer; only he keeps the towel on the neck – and simply keeps on playing
What's most impressive about this sequence is just how fun and musical his playing is
Although there's a good deal of showmanship involved
it's by no means all about showmanship; as always
Be sure to check out the bottom video below
which shows Gatton playing slide with two beer bottles

Minister for Transport and Main RoadsThe Honourable Mark Bailey
The Gatton Heavy Vehicle Decoupling Facility is now open after five months of work
giving drivers the option to break down and reconfigure heavy vehicles on either side of Toowoomba Second Range Crossing before continuing their journey
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure
Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the new facility would mean more efficient deliveries to and from Brisbane
“Heavy vehicle drivers will benefit from using the Toowoomba Bypass and can avoid paying a second toll to reconfigure at Charlton,” the Deputy Prime Minister said
“This will improve efficiencies for our essential heavy vehicle industry
Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the new facility would be a boost for the freight industry
which had been vital to the state’s COVID-19 recovery over the past year
“The Palaszczuk Government recognises the hard-working heavy vehicle drivers who have been the unsung heroes over the past year
transporting goods and products across the state to keep our economy going,” Mr Bailey said
“The new facility at Gatton will make it easier and more efficient for drivers to break down and reconfigure their trucks as needed before continuing over the Toowoomba Range or into Brisbane.”
Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport and Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz welcomed the new facility
“The Australian Government proudly funded the Gatton Heavy Vehicle Decoupling Facility in partnership with the Queensland Government
as part of the Toowoomba Bypass project,” Mr Buchholz said
Queensland Assistant Regional Roads Minister Bruce Saunders said the facility was an important project to support the heavy vehicle industry and make the road network around Toowoomba safer and more efficient
“With 30 bays for decoupling and no time limits for trailer parking
drivers will be able to choose either side of Toowoomba to break down and reconfigure,” Mr Saunders said
“The acceleration lanes onto the Warrego Highway have been lengthened to make the highway merge safer
“The roundabouts and overpass between the Gatton facility and Warrego Highway have also been widened and strengthened to accommodate the additional heavy vehicles expected to stop.”
The facility will be monitored by CCTV and users are advised to comply with site instructions
with penalties for dumping livestock effluent or waste and any other breaches

So we thought we would bring the unsung hero up to be interacted with," Klimoski said
The large fossil replica serves as a timeline for the city of Lexington
with each segment featuring a date and fact for visitors to learn more about the area's history
"Humanity has been around six thousand years and the planet has been around for 500 million years
We want people to really explore what that means in terms of the land we share and everything else," Klimoski said
This installation is just one of many pieces of art that will be displayed throughout Gatton Park. With improved weather conditions
Lankford emphasized that Gatton Park will make its debut in the near future
"We're not quite ready to announce the final grand opening
We're getting more confident in our timeline
We're still on track to open up late summer of 2025," Lankford said

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 22, 2025) — The University of Kentucky Gatton College of Business and Economics Excel team has earned an impressive third place in the world rankings of the Microsoft World Excel Collegiate Competition
This achievement follows months of dedication and countless hours of practice by the team members
The journey to the world stage began in January 2024 when a group of 16 finance students formed a team to compete in the Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge
the team committed to weekly practice sessions — refining their Excel skills and tackling challenging problems set by the competition organizers
when they traveled to the University of Tennessee for the Southern Conference Championship
the UK team competed against nine other teams from six different schools and emerged victorious — sweeping both the team and individual championships
This win secured them a spot in the World Championship
streamed live from the HyperX Esports Arena
brought together top collegiate Excel competitors from around the globe
Finalists traveled from countries such as Austria
Joseph Delgado (Lexington) and Andrew Durant (London
Kentucky) — faced fierce competition in the semifinals
where only four of 14 teams advanced to the final round
The team secured a spot in the final four and ultimately claimed top three in the world
arts and the academic arena,” Saliling said
“The Gatton College Excel team is contributing to UK’s winning tradition and adding to its laurels in finance.”
Durant, a finance major with minors in computer science (Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering) and business analytics (Gatton College)
a finance and mathematics (College of Arts and Sciences) major with a minor in computer science
but I’ll always remember the fire I had within me during this journey,” said Durant
“That drive is something I want to carry forward — chasing that same feeling in other important experiences in my life
Durant delivered an exceptional performance
4 world ranking and becoming the highest-ranked U.S
falling just three points short (601 to 598) in a dramatic final 30 seconds
“Earning first place and representing UK on a global stage was a dream come true
but it wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of Professor Leonce Bargeron and Professor Saliling
Their guidance and encouragement throughout this journey were invaluable
and I can’t thank them enough for believing in me.”
Looking ahead, the UK Gatton Excel team plans to expand, recruit freshman talent and continue building on the university’s momentum in future competitions. Those interested in joining the team or learning more, can contact john.saliling@uky.edu
