Anonymous posts on social media warning of a planned "riot" by young people in Hobart's northern suburbs caused a lot of anxiety in the community on Wednesday.
Mayor of Glenorchy, Sue Hickey, tells Ryk Goddard on Hobart Breakfast that she's disappointed about the rumours targeting her municipality and says the reality is Glenorchy has no more of a youth crime problem than any other city in the state, and in fact, the latest statistics show crime is down.
Mayor of Glenorchy, Sue Hickey, says Glenorchy is "perfectly as safe as Eastlands, Kingborough, anywhere else in this state."(ABC News: Maren Preuss)
Ryk GoddardOne of the people doing this is MLC Bec Thomas. Now you and her on council used to work so closely together, very much in lockstep. What's happened there?
Ryk GoddardChris at Bellerive makes a point, which is I think it's innocent shoppers and bystanders being kicked around by some youth in these areas, in these mall areas at Glenorchy, also yes at Clarence.
Ryk GoddardWhat are you doing at Glenorchy City Council, mayor Sue Hickey, to engage these young people? I know you have youth workers who are around and about. Are they actively engaged? Are they sort of just there?

Tasmania Police have launched a series of planned patrols and safety operations across Glenorchy
Moonah and Claremont today following widespread social media warnings of potential youth riots
The significant police presence comes after viral social media posts claimed up to 200 young people were planning to “run through shopping centres and assault people and ransack shops” in the area
One widely-shared Facebook post urged residents to avoid Northgate shopping centre and surrounding areas
claiming “the riot squad will be on call but this will not guarantee your safety.”
Police confirmed the increased presence is designed to maintain public safety
encouraging people to report incidents via 131 444 or Triple-Zero for emergencies
“Police are committed to making sure our public spaces are safe for everyone to enjoy
and antisocial and illegal behaviour in our communities will not be tolerated,” a police spokesperson said
It is understood police have been contacting managers at stores within the Northgate shopping centre
urging them to have their shutters “ready to deploy” in case of a large-scale incident
The operation comes amid growing concerns about youth crime in the Glenorchy area
with the state government now considering Queensland-style “adult crime
adult time” laws for serious young offenders
Police Minister Felix Ellis confirmed the government is examining all options to address what he described as a spike in serious youth offending
“Our communities are clearly fed up when it comes to youth crime and so are we as a government
We’ll be taking strong action,” Ellis said
“We’ve seen in Queensland strong success from adult crime
a reduction of about a third of those serious crimes committed by youth offending.”
Ellis claimed approximately 50 young people are responsible for half of all youth crime in Tasmania
“One of the worst things that you could do for a young person is to teach them that there are no consequences for their actions,” he said
The Greens have criticised the proposed approach to youth justice reform

The City of Hobart and Glenorchy City Councils are urging both major political parties to address the funding disparity affecting safe seats like Clark in the upcoming federal election
Based on a desktop search of social media and media announcements –throughout the election campaign
it would appear that Clark has received only $12 million of commitments
equating to just seven projects or initiatives in total
This in comparison to a whopping total of over $157 million worth of commitments in Bass
and $409 million in the electorate of Lyons (see table below)
leaving Clark grossly and unfairly underfunded
While both Councils have already had some small early win's
there are still a number of advocacy priorities that have been overlooked
both mayors are calling on the Liberal and Labor parties to prioritise fair funding that is based on genuine need rather than political strategy
Quotes to be attributed to Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds:
deserves its fair share of federal investment
"Our community's basic infrastructure needs are just as important as those in marginal seats
"We urge all federal candidates to support these city-shaping projects that both protect and will enhance the lives of our residents and future-proof Hobart for generations to come
"It's time to deliver fairer funding that makes a profound difference to our community and visitors from all around the state and elsewhere for decades
"We need solid strategic and most importantly
fair funding decisions that deliver solid infrastructure that serves communities across entire regions."
Quotes to be attributed to Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey:
"The situation with our aquatic facilities is a perfect example of what the lack of federal funding is costing our community
we can build a facility that will serve our community and neighbouring areas for the next 40 years
"We need the federal government to fund this investment
"Just because we don't sit in a marginal seat doesn't mean our community infrastructure needs aren't important."

A 15-year-old from Bridgewater has been taken into custody following a weekend assault in Glenorchy
as the Premier pledges “immediate action” on escalating youth violence in Hobart’s northern suburbs
Police charged the youth over Sunday’s assault
another attack in the Glenorchy CBD last week and possession of a dangerous article
The incident on Sunday marked the third alleged major gang assault in the area in less than two weeks
It prompted Premier Jeremy Rockliff to announce increased police patrols
“We cannot have people too scared to go shopping,” Rockliff said yesterday
“It’s not going to be tolerated.”
Rockliff will meet with Police Minister Felix Ellis and Police Commissioner Donna Adams today to discuss strategies for addressing the violence
“We need safer communities and increased police presence is one of those actions which we are committing to
But there are other matters that we need to consider and all options are on the table,” the Premier said
He specifically mentioned examining Queensland’s “Adult Crime
which have reportedly resulted in a 32% drop in cases against children charged with serious offences in the three months since implementation
Independent Elwick MLC Bec Thomas expressed outrage after hearing of Sunday’s attack
“I have been on the phone to the Premier
to advise him and urge him to act to keep our community safe,” she said
“I won’t stop jumping up and down about this until things change.”
police say an 18-year-old from Hobart will be summonsed for retail shoplifting
while a 13-year-old was arrested for trespass and using abusive language toward a police officer

In response to the Glenorchy youth crimes recently, Bec Thomas, independent member of the Legislative Council for Elwick, is trying to secure action from the premier and the police minister. She tells Leon Compton on Tasmania Mornings that they are taking the issue "very seriously", with more police being deployed in the area, but she believes there is not enough investment in community intervention programs.
"Our community must feel safe. It has such an impact physically, psychologically and on our economy in Glenorchy."
MLC for Elwick, Bec Thomas, is seeking urgent action on the youth crime troubling Glenorchy, following recent reports of increased violence in the surburb.
Leon ComptonWhat are you experiencing? What are you being told about at the moment? What are you seeing?
Leon ComptonCan you share some of the stories that you've heard specifically, Bec Thomas?
Bec ThomasSure. Some of the stories have been quite well publicised, Leon. So I guess what I'm sharing is nothing that perhaps many people haven't seen already, but there have been violent attacks. At Big W, 15th of April was one that was really well publicised.
Leon ComptonThis was effectively almost a takeover of a store in which young people were sort of running through the checkouts, threatening staff and patrons that were there. And it looked out of control. Bec Thomas, you've lived in that community your whole life. You've served as man now representing the upper house. Has it ever been this bad before?
Leon ComptonIs there enough police presence in the Glenorchy area?
Bec ThomasLook, to the credit of the police minister and to the premier, they have been taking my calls and I've been calling the police minister on the regular in the last week. And I spoke to the premier just last night. They are taking this issue very seriously. The police minister has committed, did commit back when I called him on around the 15th of April or the 16th to introducing more proactive police patrolling.
Leon ComptonThe other part of this conversation and it's multi-pronged, clearly Bec Thomas, these are young people making very bad decisions. Is there enough support in your community for those young people to be diverted away to make better choices?

Lord Mayor of Hobart and the mayor of Glenorchy say they feel the great Hobart region has been ignored in this federal election campaign.
City of Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds tells Ryk Goddard on Hobart Breakfast that northern Tasmanian electorates receive far more in funding in federal election promises than the greater Hobart region, despite the southern capital having the state's largest population.
"It doesn't pass the pub test, Ryk," Ms Reynolds says.
"We all pay our fair share of taxes and we all deserve a bit of that coming back to us for local projects during election time."

A man has been hospitalised after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of youths at a Glenorchy shopping centre yesterday evening
The incident occurred around 5:45pm on Wednesday when the victim became caught in a verbal altercation between several youths inside the Northgate shopping centre
The man tried to leave the centre and headed toward his car
before 12 to 15 teenagers understood to be younger than 15 allegedly chased him into the underground car park and assaulted him
“He tried to get away by going back up to the centre and they caught up to him in the food court,” the victim’s sibling posted on social media
“He’s been punched and kicked multiple times
one of his front teeth has been broken and goodness knows what other injuries yet.”
Another witness claimed the youths tried to steal the mans belongings before punching him “repeatedly” in the mouth
“His glasses were smashed into his face
He was turned towards them holding his palms up asking them to stop and telling them he didn’t have any issue
They kept picking and swearing,” they said
“The amount of people who just stood there or filmed it or kept walking was crazy.”
Police say the victim received non-life threatening injuries
with the matter currently under investigation
“Police would like to hear from anyone with information about the youths involved,” a spokesperson said
The assault comes just days after a separate incident where 15 to 20 youths reportedly stormed the Glenorchy Big W twice in one day
Police Minister Felix Ellis expressed outrage following the Big W incident
“There is absolutely no excuse for this in our community,” Ellis said
“Tasmanians deserve to not only feel safe
but be safe when they are going about their business.”
Police say there is “no identified link” between the incident at Northgate and the incident at Big W at this stage

A rise in violence and anti-social behaviour in Glenorchy has prompted urgent calls for government action
Independent Elwick MLC Bec Thomas has written to Premier Jeremy Rockliff seeking immediate intervention following several disturbing incidents first reported by Pulse
It includes a large group of youths has terrorising shoppers and staff at Glenorchy Big W last Tuesday and an attack at Northgate this Wednesday which left the victim in hospital
“Today I personally spoke to a local business owner who told me he was attacked on Easter Saturday by a group of young people in broad daylight,” Thomas said
“His wife is now too scared to shop in Glenorchy
she’s absolutely traumatised.”
“I also met with staff at a major retail store following a much-publicised incident last week
“It is totally unfair the damage this behaviour causes to innocent members of the community.”
Thomas has proposed a comprehensive approach that extends beyond policing
including legislative changes to empower security officers
She wants to see increased investment in early intervention programs for at-risk youth
a Glenorchy Youth Hub and a review of youth justice sentencing
“We need a plan that is not tough or soft on crime
Police Minister Felix Ellis confirmed that authorities are increasing their presence in the Glenorchy CBD

Glenorchy and Moonah have been promised a major safety upgrade
with the Liberal Party pledging to install CCTV cameras in key public areas
a Dutton Liberal government will commit $150,000 from its Safer Communities Fund to help tackle growing concerns about anti-social behaviour in Hobart’s northern suburbs
Liberal candidate for Clark Marilena Di Florio said the funding responds directly to community feedback

We’re responding with practical measures to help make public spaces safer for everyone,” Di Florio said
The project will focus on the cycleway between Moonah and Glenorchy
the Main Road retail strip in Moonah and surrounding car parks
Di Florio said these are all three specific areas identified by the Glenorchy City Council
“As a resident of the northern suburbs
where weve experienced a rise in antisocial behaviour
I understand the importance of community safety,” she said
“These CCTV cameras will help people feel safe.”
The announcement is part of a broader security push
with another $15,000 earmarked for new cameras on Quail Street in St Helens
Liberal candidate for Lyons Susie Bower said the cameras are a “practical response to concerns” raised by locals
“The cameras will provide 24/7 surveillance and act as a strong deterrent
ensuring Quail Street remains a safe and welcoming place for residents and visitors alike,” she said

A large group of youths has terrorised shoppers and staff at a department store in Hobart’s northern suburbs
reigniting community concern about youth crime
Between 15 and 20 young people reportedly stormed Big W in Glenorchy twice within a 10-minute period on Tuesday
causing significant disruption and targeting staff members
Witnesses report the youths jumped behind the technology desk
pulled products from shelves and intimidated a worker in what appeared to be a coordinated attack
“My Mum and I were very stressed and so were a lot of other customers
mainly elderly and children,” said one shopper who witnessed the incident
“I took a video to get some of their faces at least to expose them and make people aware who these terrorists are.”
captures screams from frightened shoppers with people heard yelling “stop it” and “oi
stop” as the youths continued their rampage
with many commenters suggesting it reflects a broader issue of youth accountability
“This is the repercussions of youth having no repercussions for their stupid behaviour
Shameful,” wrote one social media user
Police Minister Felix Ellis said he was “appalled” at the behaviour he saw in the video
“ There is absolutely no excuse for this in our community,” he told Pulse
but be safe when they are going about their business.”
“ We’ve taken strong action to crack down on crime with the establishment of Taskforces
such as Saturate and Reprisal in the Southern District
and Taskforce Scelus in the Western District.”
“These Taskforces have shown strong success in tackling repeat offenders.”
a Tasmania Police spokesperson said no charges have been laid in relation to the incident
“At this stage in the investigation police believe the disturbance involved two groups of youths who were known to each other,” they said
“Police investigations are following a specific line of enquiry.”

The Glenorchy City Council has officially put the repair of the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool out to tender
with hopes it could be open again by the end of the year
The pool was shut down indefinitely in July 2023 after leaks and a range of safety concerns were uncovered
then-mayor Bec Thomas admitted the business case for keeping the outdoor pool open was “not particularly strong”
She said many locals preferred to visit the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre just up the road
fewer than 100 people used the pool every day on average
with an annual cost to Glenorchy ratepayers of about $400,000,” she said
the state government provided $200,000 for a specialist assessment to evaluate community needs
costs and future options for the 60-year-old facility
found strong community support for keeping a pool on the site in the long term
The vision adopted by the council in August 2024 includes an outdoor 50m pool
Mayor Sue Hickey said this would give the community “a modern aquatic facility for the next 40 years”
but would come at an estimated cost of $84 million
lobbying efforts are underway to secure funding
while a $5 million investment from the state government will help get the pool operational again in the meantime
The interim works will include demolishing the waterslide
upgrading the entry area and installing a new heating system
an all-abilities accessible ramp will be added to the main pool and pavement repairs will be carried out around the pool surrounds
The tender process is open until early March and the council is confident the pool will be back up and running for next summer

The Glenorchy City Council is moving ahead with plans to repair and eventually redevelop the local swimming pool
backed by an ambitious $83.8 million funding campaign
Mayor Sue Hickey confirmed at Monday night’s council meeting that a tender review committee is currently assessing initial repair bids
“Council officers are working towards presenting the recommended successful tender to the April 28 council meeting for endorsement,” Hickey said
While the immediate focus is on repairing the existing facility for opening next summer
the council has launched a parallel federal election campaign for complete redevelopment
Hickey encouraged locals to get involved and share their views with candidates
“We continue to lobby state and federal governments for the $83.8 million needed to redevelop the pool,” she said
“We’re encouraged by the number of community members who are supporting the campaign for funding.”
Rotary and other community organisations from across the Greater Hobart area to brief them on the importance of redeveloping the pool and asking them to help us lobby for funding as we see this as really a regional project.”
The council plans to share more updates on both the repair work and redevelopment campaign following the late April meeting

A new mural depicting the journey of water through Tasmania’s landscapes has been unveiled at Tolosa Park in Glenorchy
the large-scale artwork covers the two reservoir tanks at the park
encouraging locals to appreciate the origins of their water supply
The designs of Mount Gould and the Styx River were selected by the community and now blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment
“The concept behind the works was to provide a visual representation of the course water takes to end up in these tanks and effectively their homes,” Bowe said
“I don’t believe everyone is aware just how far the catchment of the Derwent River stretches – part of the watershed boundary being the Du Cane range depicted in the work.”
He said the murals transform the water tanks from a piece of infrastructure into an accessible piece of art for the whole community
“You don’t have to go to an art gallery or museum
It is there for everyone to share – this work was one for the people.”
Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the initiative has fostered a “sense of pride and connection” within the community
“We hope it becomes a landmark in its own right
which has an ever-growing reputation for world class art.”
TasWater started the Asset Art Program in 2017 in an attempt to discourage graffiti on their infrastructure
“The program has since evolved into a community-driven initiative
concrete utility assets a real source of pride,” said TasWater General Manager Customer and Community Matt Balfe

Work to get the Glenorchy Pool back open won’t start until next year
as the council plots a path to find $84 million in funding for a total redevelopment
Sue Hickey says tender documents for interim repairs to the aged facility are currently being finalised and are expected to be released once a $5 million grant from the Tasmanian Government is approved
“It shouldn’t be far away,” Hickey said
“[The Department of State Growth] have informed council that this will be mid-to-late November.”
The mayor said tenders released in December typically don’t attract strong applications
so they may not be made public until early next year
“Construction work is anticipated throughout 2025 with the aim the work will complete in time to open the pool in late 2025 for the 25-26 summer period,” she said
you will not see any work being carried out on the pool site until next year.”
“It should be noted that this timing will need to be confirmed once tenders are received and the contract for availability is confirmed.”
The upgrades to the existing pool will include an all-ability accessible ramp
plant room repairs and removal of the slide
The toddler pool will receive a new and separate filtration system
with further upgrades contingent on the remaining budget
The upgrades also include changes to the toilet
Hickey also touched on the possibility of a new pool in the future
“Council received a comprehensive and well-received briefing on the final options assessment for the future of the pool at last week’s open workshop,” she said
A full business case for the new pool is expected to be presented to the council by the end of the week
which will then be used to lobby governments for the necessary $84 million funding

The Glenorchy City Council has unveiled concept designs for a multi-million dollar redevelopment of the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool
which will be presented at an open workshop on Monday afternoon
indoor 25m lap pool and indoor 20m learn-to-swim pool
The project is estimated to cost around $84 million and would be funded through a yet-to-be determined source
Mayor Sue Hickey said the proposed concept would provide the community with a fit-for-purpose aquatic facility for the coming decades after structural concerns shut the existing pool last yet
“This option would give the community a modern aquatic facility for the next 40 years
retaining an outdoor facility that many users of the existing pool told us was important,” she said
“The consultants we engaged have been working with community stakeholders for the past 10 months to bring council an option that both reflects the community’s preferences and has the strongest business case to attract funding.”
Hickey said the preferred option is being presented to council as the best option in terms of community benefit
which she said maximises its chances of gaining government funding
“We recognise this represents a major investment in our community and in our sport and recreation infrastructure,” she said
“But we also recognise the benefits a swimming pool has for people in assisting them lead active and healthy lives.”
who lobbied council following the closure of the existing pool last year
have been involved in this process from the outset and this option has been developed with their input.”
an elector poll held earlier this year made it clear the community wanted council to redevelop the facility.”
The council will approach both state and federal governments to secure funding for the project
council will be getting on with the job of repairing and re-opening the existing pool which we are aiming to have ready for summer next year,” Hickey said

An investigation has been launched after it was discovered that an IT system used by the Glenorchy City Council had been compromised
which occurred in a system provided by an “external vendor”
Details about the system and nature of the breach remain undisclosed
Hickey said there is currently no evidence to suggest that council or ratepayer information has been accessed
“This unauthorised activity was detected by council’s IT security systems
immediately triggering an investigation under our established protocols,” she said
“We are continuing to work with our specialist IT contractors and the vendor as part of the ongoing investigation.”
The affected system has since been “isolated” to “further prevent unauthorised activity attempts”
“Council takes the security of its IT systems and the data it holds extremely seriously and this investigation is taking place as a matter of priority,” Hickey said

The redevelopment of the Glenorchy Showground is facing further delays and cost overruns
with the project now running a year behind schedule and $32 million over the initial budget
According to Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania (RAST) CEO Scott Gadd
the delays are primarily due to planning approval issues with the Glenorchy City Council
“We had to lodge a second DA due to some changes that were needed to be made and that’s just taken time,” Gadd told Jo Spargo on Local Radio
“Council want to make sure they get it right and that game of ping pong’s been going on for about a year.”
Included in the redevelopment is a new multi-purpose show precinct
The housing aspect alone is expected to cost up to $300 million
while the show facilities have risen in cost from $42 million to $74 million
Gadd said the $32 million overrun is a “worst-case scenario” and that the society is looking to reduce costs through value management and material optimisation
He also hinted at the possibility of applying for federal funding to help cover the shortfall
The delays have raised concerns about the impact on the Hobart Show
which is traditionally held at the Glenorchy Showground
Gadd said that the society has not yet received approval from Hobart City Council to continue using the Regatta Ground and other areas for the show next year
“We only thought we’d need it for three years
so we had approval up until this year,” he said
“Obviously there’s some other factors at play down there in terms of the sewerage treatment plant relocation and the Macquarie Stadium progress

A plan to determine the feasibility of converting car parks into housing in Hobart's Northern suburbs was endorsed at last night's Glenorchy City Council meeting.
Mayor Sue Hickey says her motion recognises that "land is a finite resource".
"We have a lot of car parks which are very precious, nobody wants to lose any car parks and this proposal is not proposing to lose any," Cr Hickey tells Jo Spargo on ABC Hobart Breakfast.
"If we can build apartments above these car parks it will be a win win for everybody."

Jo SpargoAnd so this is just a motion that's passed. It's still a long way off.
Sue HickeyFor the officers to investigate the possibilities of it and to talk to Hobart and get the learnings.

Marks will fill the seat left vacant by the late Councillor Jan Dunsby
who passed away in November after a battle with illness
He managed to secure a majority ahead of runner-up Jenny Branch-Allen and other candidates Morris Malone
Marks will join the council alongside Mayor Sue Hickey
“I welcome Mr Marks to Glenorchy City Council and look forward to working with him as he represents the ratepayers of Glenorchy,” she said
Marks was officially sworn in by Acting Chief Executive Officer Emilio Reale at 4pm today ahead of the council’s Annual General Meeting

The Glenorchy Child and Family Learning Centre has officially opened
offering wraparound support for families with young children in Hobart’s northern suburbs
The $28 million facility is the last of six new centres built across Tasmania
Education Minister Jo Palmer said the Glenorchy centre had already seen strong community engagement since it quietly opened last month
“We’re already seeing the positive impact… with over 40 families visiting each day since it opened its doors last month,” she said
“There is a real sense of ownership of this facility
what do the families and the children of the Glenorchy local government area really need and want?”
The centre supports families with children from birth to five years old
A wide range of free wraparound services are on offer
Centre leader Donna Lashmar said early support can make a big difference
“Those first five years are so important for child development
They’re learning and growing all the time
Their little brains are developing,” she said
All the services here are free and available to families in the area.”
A local parent who was involved in the planning process said the centre will be a life-changing for many
you don’t really know what’s normal and what’s not with a child,” they said
“And so to have those services here that can pick up and intervene early if anything is needed is really helpful in many ways.”

Tasmania Police have charged dozens of people in the lead-up to Christmas as part of a successful operation targeting shoplifting and anti-social behaviour in Glenorchy
Operation Swipe has resulted in 453 charges being laid against 74 individuals since the beginning of December
including 18 who were held in custody for court appearances
one youth received a caution action notice and 38 young people were charged with a combined 280 offences
Eight of them were held in custody to appear in court
Inspector Jason Klug said the operation demonstrates that “illegal activities and anti-social behaviours will not be tolerated by police”
“These patrols are about sending a message to the small percentage of people in our community who choose to do the wrong thing,” he said
He said police will continue to work closely with the community to reduce offending

Glenorchy’s Tolosa Park has been handed back to the Glenorchy City Council
involved the partial demolition of a 20-metre-high dam wall and extensive earthworks to create an open parkland with water features
TasWater General Manager of Project Delivery Tony Willmott said the completion was an exciting milestone for the community
“Tolosa Park is an important area to the people of Glenorchy and to see the area transformed into a beautiful parkland is particularly satisfying,” he said
“I’ve worked in this community for 35 years of my life and I can remember going to Tolosa Park for barbeques as a kid myself
It holds so many amazing memories for people across the region.”
The original dam was removed from the water network and emptied in 2018 after TasWater built two above-ground reservoirs
“We are delighted to have created something that will be enjoyed for generations to come through this project,” Willmott said
TasWater partnered with the council to fund the project
contributing $3.2 million to the redevelopment
Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said she was excited to officially take over management of the parkland
Tolosa Park is one of Tasmania’s largest and most popular passive recreation areas and is classified as a regional park for southern Tasmania,” Hickey said
“The work undertaken by TasWater marks a brand new and exciting chapter for this iconic area.”
The completion of the project paves the way for the council to progress its future plans for the area as part of its Tolosa Park Master Plan
Stage B of the master plan will see the open area transformed into a recreational parkland and space for events and a network of paved walking trails created
It will also include the installation shelters

The Glenorchy City Council recently found that ten per cent of residents in their municipality don't have access to cars, and for those residents who do drive to work their commute is only, on average, three kilometres. It's one of the many reasons, as Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey explains, behind their proposal for a series of integrated bicycle routes in the northern suburbs.
Ms Hickey tells Mel Bush on ABC's Hobart Breakfast that these routes would link into other council areas and into the city — providing alternative transportation options for residents.
New bike lanes in Tasmania have proven contentious in the past. (ABC News: Gian De Poloni)
Glenorchy, University Of Tasmania, Transport, Cycling, Climate ChangeTranscriptSue Hickey I do urge people to have a look at it. Even the naysayers. This is such a well thoughtout, brilliant plan.
Mel Bush Yesterday on the program, you also heard from the Lord Mayor of Hobart, Anna Reynolds, about, among other things, the plans around integrating a section of Collins Street with a bike lane. There are views on both sides about what is rather a small part of an inner city street. However, in Glenorchy, the plans for integrating a cycle-friendly city has extended well past a single street into rather a vast network. Sue Hickey is the Glenorchy City Mayor. Mayor, good morning.
Sue Hickey Good morning, Mel. How are you?
Mel Bush Very well, Sue, very well. Mayor, how long has this plan been in the making? Because it's a pretty bold one by the looks of it.
Mel Bush And Mayor, can you give us a bit of a general overview of what it's going to be like on the ground and what you're wanting to achieve? You've mentioned that, you know, safety, et cetera, et cetera. But this plan is extending past Glenorchy proper. This is going into other and surrounding suburbs, isn't it?
Mel Bush Wow. Yeah, that is an interesting stat. What's the feedback been like so far, Mayor?
Mel Bush And as you mentioned, jump online, have a look. You can have a look at the entire network, which is no doubt being rolled out incrementally. Mayor, great to chat. Thank you for your time.
Sue Hickey You're welcome. Thanks, Mel.
A car has flipped onto its side in a crash on Bowden Street in Glenorchy this morning
with police asking motorists to avoid the area until the scene is cleared
A police spokesperson said no serious injuries have been reported
The road is closed between the Barry and Eady Street roundabout and Tolosa Street
