Visitors to Brendan Hansen Park will soon enjoy smoother and safer footpaths
making it easier to get around the popular Granville green space
Cr Daniel Sanderson said work started this week to replace almost 300 metres of aging bitumen paths with new 1.8m wide concrete paths
“Brendan Hansen Park is one of the most popular green spaces on the Fraser Coast
“It is now home to the vibrant Granville Gather twilight markets
which are held every third Sunday of the month
and has hosted Council’s Maryborough Dog’s Day Out events
“Upgrading the pathways to concrete will ensure they are durable
including people with prams or mobility aids
“These upgrades will improve the day-to-day use of the park
ensuring it remains a hub of activity and a space the community can take pride in
we’re ensuring our parks remain safe
and well-maintained spaces for years to come
Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said: “Whether making their way from A to B
getting in their daily steps or spending time with family and friends
our communities pound the pavement of local footpaths every day
“I’m pleased to see Fraser Coast Regional Council working to improve this pedestrian infrastructure at one of Granville’s favourite parks
as well as other public spaces across the region.”
The new pathways are being delivered by the Council’s internal Landscape Construction Team
the work is expected to be completed by early March

Council has received $1.795 million under the Works for Queensland program to complete various footpath and pathway works across the region
Exclusive: Education department allows Sheikh Wesam Charkawi to return to Granville Boys high school
adding case highlights ‘ambiguity in what is required of public servants’
A support officer has returned to a western Sydney school after being ordered to work from home after he posted a video in response to the Bankstown hospital nurses footage
in which he criticised “selective outrage”
Sheikh Wesam Charkawi, who works at Granville Boys high school, posted a video on his social media platforms on 16 February in which he spoke about the reaction to two New South Wales nurses who allegedly claimed in a social media video they wouldn’t treat Israelis and boasted of sending them to hell
Charkawi said the nurses’ comments were “never meant to be literal or intended to be a threat to patient care” and criticised people who had spoken out about them but remained silent on Israel’s actions
“We refuse to accept a political and media landscape where Muslims are only visible when they are being condemned but invisible when they are being killed,” he said in the video
Sign up for Guardian Australia’s breaking news email
The education department first asked Charkawi to remove the posts from TikTok and Instagram at a meeting on 18 February
as the department believed they did not comply with “departmental and government policies”
so the department asked him to work from home until the matter was resolved
On 24 February the department issued a directive instructing him to remove the posts by 26 February
The video was removed from his Instagram and TikTok but remains on his Facebook and LinkedIn profiles
In a meeting between senior department officials
Charkawi and his legal representative on Thursday
it was agreed he could return to his role at the school on Friday morning
The decision came after students at the school staged protests on Wednesday and Thursday against the directive
The NSW education department later said “following meetings with senior officials
Mr Charkawi has been cleared by the department to return to work as a school learning support officer”
“He has been counselled over his actions and reminded of his obligations as a department employee,” a spokesperson said on Friday
“Mr Charkawi has removed the social media video and agreed to adhere to the code of ethics and conduct.”
told Guardian Australia the posts did not breach the department’s social media policy
He raised concerns about the “validity” and “legal basis” of the directive that formally instructed Charkawi to remove the video
“Our feeling was that there’s a level of ambiguity and uncertainty in what is required of public servants and that the department has capitalised upon that level of ambiguity and uncertainty to place pressure on the sheikh to remain silent in this instance.”
Kheir questioned whether a similar directive would be issued to teachers expressing opinions about the war in Ukraine or the voice referendum
“The ambiguity here is extremely concerning because there is more scope within that to silence certain views
And that is what we say has occurred here.”
Guardian Australia understands media reporting on the video led the department to issue the directive instructing Charkawi to remove it
the department referred to its social media policy
associated social media procedures and its code of ethics and conduct
The education department also referred to a letter issued by the NSW premier’s department in mid-February which said public servants “have a duty to uphold the reputation of your department and the government sector as apolitical
Free newsletterGet the most important news as it breaks
“This includes also in a private capacity in public forums
or when engaging in political or social issues.”
Charkawi has worked as a support officer at the school for 13 years and is well known to parents and the wider community
He is one of the leaders of the grassroots political group the Muslim Vote
which was established in response to community anger at Labor’s handling of the war in Gaza
Blaxland and Werriwa in western Sydney in this year’s federal election
Charkawi signed a community statement alongside a number of Muslim groups and leaders that argued the “speed
intensity and uniformity of responses from certain political leaders and media outlets” to the Bankstown nurses video was “revealing”
from the group Teachers and School Staff for Palestine
said the NSW premier’s department letter had left teachers and school staff feeling “fearful” and “silenced”
“There are many schools where people are fearful to talk about Gaza
to express a desire for the horrors there to stop,” he said
“There are staff who won’t wear a keffiyeh [traditional Palestinian scarf] or a pro-Palestine badge because they are fearful about the consequences for their employment
And this letter just reinforced that fear.”
He believed the letter was “intended to tell teachers that some human rights are not up for discussion”
There is a worry of the slippery slope here that teachers won’t be able to comment on politics outside of school soon.”
An education department spokesperson said on Wednesday that all public servants needed to remain “apolitical”
“All NSW Department of Education employees have been reminded of their duty to uphold the reputation of the department as apolitical and impartial.”
One of the Bankstown nurses, Sarah Abu Lebdeh, has been charged in relation to the allegedly anti-Israeli video
Students at a Granville Boys High School spent Wednesday morning protesting
after a staff member shared a post to social media about the pair of Bankstown Hospital nurses
and was consequentially told to work from home
a student support officer at Granville Boys High
was “counselled about his obligations” by the NSW Education Department after posting a video on TikTok they claimed his post breached the department’s social media policy and code of ethics
Charkawi accused political leaders of “selective moral outrage” after footage emerged of nurses from Bankstown Hospital allegedly saying they would refuse to treat Israeli patients
“The most revealing aspect of the political outrage is the speed
and coordination of the response from figures who have ben otherwise largely indifferent
or outright complicit in enabling on mass atrocities,” he said in the video
and it isn’t just a double standard… it’s an orchestrated moral framework where outrage is not dictated by the severity of an action but by the one who commits it.”
One of the nurses, 26-year-old Sarah Abu Lebdeh, was charged with three offences on Tuesday night
using a carriage service to threaten to kill and using a carriage service to menace
Charkwai was told by senior education department officials to “temporarily work from an alternate location”
He has been a member of staff at Granville Boys High for more than a decade
and is a member of the Australian National Imams Council
students gathered at the front of the school alongside parents
where they listened to speeches in support of Charwiki
A video was recorded of the students chanting “Free Palestine” and “Allahu Akbar” (God is great)
NSW Education Minister Prue Car said school was not a place of protest
“The best place for students in school is in class learning
That was not the case here and that is not acceptable
“I am advised that there will be a full school assembly tomorrow morning where those expectations will be reinforced to the entire student body
Any student who does not comply with these expectations will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action from the school
“It is my expectation that anyone who works in a NSW public school performs their duties impartially
apolitically and professionally as set out in the department’s code of conduct.”
Advocacy group Teachers for Palestine, who also attended the protest in support of Chakawi, said on Wednesday night that the attack on him was “outrageous”, and that his comments did not break the social media policy.
“There was no similar level of outrage, or move to charge Alan Jones when he publicly said Prime Minister Julia Gillard ‘should be thrown out to sea in a chaff bag’ or when a conservative commentator Pru MacSween said on Sydney’s 2GB radio station that she wanted to ‘run over’ Muslim, Sudanese-Australian writer Yassmin Abdel-Magied,” they said in an Instagram post.
“There is no similar level of outrage, or any outrage, when Palestinian health workers are routinely tortured or executed by Israel. Nor was there any when senior Israeli ministers called for Gaza to be ethnically cleansed, or even nuked.”
NSW Premier’s department secretary Simon Draper and NSW Public Service Commissioner Kathrina Lo wrote a joint letter to public sector staff last week, saying they have “a duty to uphold the reputation of your department and the government sector as apolitical, impartial and professional”.
“This includes also in a private capacity in public forums, on social media, or when engaging in political or social issues. You have a right to express your views and support causes, but always with a mind to how it might impact on your role as a public servant and trust in our institutions by all members of the community,” the letter said.
When asked at NSW budget estimates what the Department of Education would do, Premier Chris Minns said “disciplinary matters have already been taken in relation to this individual by the department.”

Lebanese chicken chain El Jannah’s breathless national expansion and the ballooning reputation that seems to precede it may have never come to fruition
if not for a phone call on Christmas Eve in 2019
“[Founder and owner] Andre [Estephan] reached out,” said Brett Houldin
who has been chief executive of El Jannah for the last five years
Let’s grow the business and turn it into a household name.’”
The essentials: whole charcoal chicken meal with Lebanese pickles
Earlier that month, Houldin had departed Craveable Brands, the parent company that operates Oporto, Red Rooster, Chargrill Charlie, after the franchise group was sold to private equity firm PAG Asia Capital
During his time heading Craveable, Houldin had gotten to know the husband-and-wife duo behind El Jannah to find out what had made their take on chicken – roasted over charcoal – such a hit with Sydneysiders, who were willing to drive across town for it
“There’s a huge amount of disruption that can happen in the fast food industry for players that can centre on quality
as part of the way that the Estephans had built it around their culture
all clustered around its birthplace of western Sydney
which counts Arabic as the most spoken language at home other than English
“You can’t just create that,” says Houldin
There was a time not too long ago that the idea of a nationally beloved Lebanese fast food chain with an Arabic name (“el jannah” means paradise or heaven) might have been harder to imagine
brined and then marinated for 24 hours in one of three production kitchens before it is cooked
A rich variety of cuisines have flourished in Australia over the decades thanks to the influx and integration of immigrants and their children
Food is often the first and most accessible touchpoint for interacting with new cultures
Part of El Jannah’s success is that its basic elements are familiar
“Chicken and salad has always been a deeply embedded Australian thing
It’s been a classic family takeaway meal or picnic solution for a long
long time,” says food consultant and Titanium Food director Suzee Brain
It’s great to see a more diversified version of that coming out now.”
Red Rooster and Nandos aren’t seen as inspiring brands to the newer generation
“They’re looking for the next wave,” she says
“El Jannah’s found a nice moment to move on that
And the fact that it’s char grilled – we’re having a wood fire moment as well.”
Houldin says his three young children’s most-requested cuisine is sushi, which continues to grow in popularity for its freshness and convenience, and points to recent ASX entrant Guzman y Gomez as driving national appetite for Mexican food
No one’s really doing Middle Eastern [at] scale,” he says
Being the first chain to do Lebanese chicken will only get you so far
“You still got to do it better than the incumbents,” says Houldin
El Jannah founders Carole and Andre Estephan
One thing El Jannah isn’t is an overnight success
The Estephans opened the first El Jannah in Granville in 1998 after a small takeaway outlet
with Andre’s sister Samira and her husband Simon went well
It was more than a decade before El Jannah’s second store opened in Sydney’s south-west suburb of Punchbowl
There were five stores when Houldin joined in 2020
And he didn’t waste any time; the first drive-through location in western Sydney’s Smithfield opened shortly after
El Jannah has since grown to nearly 40 locations and has become something of a litmus test against which its rivals are compared
brined and then marinated for 24 hours in three production kitchens (two in Sydney and one in Melbourne)
which centralises the preparation of salads like tabouli and fattoush
All of this is delivered six days a week across NSW
About 40 or 50 chickens at a time are cooked by “charcoal masters” who aren’t allowed to touch the charcoal until they have had six months of training
El Jannah CEO Brett Houldin and head of marketing Adam Issa.Credit: Wolter Peeters
“We’ve never harped on about all this,” says Adam Issa
“Everyone’s come before us and said these things
We’ve allowed the food to speak for itself.” He gestures to the tabouli
Ensuring the chain’s rapid roll-out doesn’t compromise the quality of the food will be crucial
Sticking close to El Jannah’s roots as a family restaurant run by the Estephans in a tight-knit community sums up the playbook
if there were one; staff are currently being retrained on the “EJ Way”
a reminder that selling chicken meals is more than just a transaction
“The whole experience of the way that it’s served
the way you ensure that the customer is treated like a guest
as if it was you welcoming them into your home
bring friends; the service around the table is another layer to the business that is the authenticity of the Lebanese way,” says Houldin
So what does Houldin say to criticisms – usually from their earliest customers
western Sydney locals – that the chicken is sometimes dry
pickles and toum (garlic dip) in the original Granville store
“I think a lot of the dialogue … is [from] those that aren’t familiar exactly with the way that charcoal chicken is cooked,” he says
Oven-baked or deep-fried chicken will retain oil in its own way
“If you cook a chicken over a charcoal bed
On balance, El Jannah has far more fans than detractors and one impatient fan has even petitioned El Jannah to open in Adelaide
To scale from a family-run operation to a national chain
El Jannah’s core business functions like HR
and marketing have been bolstered; about 45 people run the head office and a further 100 work on the supply chain side
Setting up in Australia’s other states will emulate the way El Jannah mushroomed in Sydney: identifying areas densely populated by Middle Eastern communities and setting up not just one store
which helps streamline supply chain logistics and encourage word of mouth
The chain is on track to reach 50 stores by June and aims to hit 100 in two years
Queensland and South Australia expansions are slated for 2026
It expects to report revenue of $250-300 million this financial year
While there are nascent ambitions to go international, with investment bankers reportedly already circling
Houldin says the talks are “very speculative”
“We’ll be patient in that regard,” says Houldin
“You can see that we’re at the start of something of our own here.”
El Jannah debuted on the global stage earlier this year at the Australian Open
which attracted a record-breaking 1.2 million visitors
a move that Houldin said was more brand and marketing-led than commercial
“It’s about allowing people to access the brand
being seen as a bit bigger than maybe what we are in store count today.”
The Estephans prefer to keep a low profile (they declined to be interviewed)
but Andre is still very active behind the scenes in signing off on major decisions and likes to look over menu development
they’re delighted and proud to see it grow while staying true to how it began
“I think they have a higher sense of confidence that the brand can be significant in the food landscape.”
Some El Jannah’s secrets will stay in the family
recently queried if their flavour-bomb condiment – its celebrated garlic dip
The allergens chart shows the garlic sauce contains egg
a common emulsifier and stabilising agent that doesn’t typically feature in traditional toum recipes
“It is a genuine locked down recipe,” says Houldin
“But it hasn’t changed because they’ve been doing it since day one.”

A rally outside a Western Sydney public school in support of a staff member stood down after he defended the two Sydney nurses who allegedly made vile anti-Semitic comments heard repeated cries of 'Allahu Akbar'
On Monday, Sheikh Wesam Charkawi, was ordered to work from home for allegedly breaching the NSW Education Departments' social media policy and code of ethics
In an Instagram post on February 16, the Granville Boys High School support officer spoke up in support of the two Sydney nurses who were recorded boasting about withholding treatment from Israeli patients and even killing them
Sheikh Wesam slammed the 'selective moral outrage' of Australian politicians
claiming that the two nurses' comments were 'never meant to be literal or intended to be a threat to patient care'
After the Western Sydney Imam was ordered to work from home
a rally was organised outside the government-funded school by a group called 'Vote4Palestine' on Wednesday
Footage of the protests showed at least 150 pupils
chanting 'Palestine will live forever' and 'stop arming Israel'
One individual with a megaphone also led chants of 'La ilaha illallah muhammadur rasool allah'
an Arabic phrase that translates to 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah
These were followed by chants of 'Allahu Akbar'

He added: 'We refuse to accept a political a media landscape when Muslims are only visible when they are being condemned but invisible when they are being killed.'
President of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies
condemned the 'incredibly troubling scenes' outside the school
scandalous and sad that children at a taxpayer-funded school were exploited as props at a divisive political rally,' he told Daily Mail Australia
'Serious questions need to be asked about how this was allowed to proceed
How were radicals allowed to stand outside the school gates and whip students into a fervour
'How could any student or staff member who doesn’t share the views of the demonstrators feel safe in that environment
He added: 'We need to confront the reality that we are facing a campaign designed to disrupt and destabilise all aspects of Australian life - including our schools.'
Sheikh Wesam was ordered to work from home while the NSW Department of Education investigated the video

(WGGB/WSHM) - A portion of Main Road in Granville has been shut down following a car crash Wednesday morning
Granville Police Chief Rick Rindels told Western Mass News the crash happened around 10:30 a.m
“It’s a single car accident into a telephone pole and road will be shut down for another 3 to 4 hours they’re estimating,” Rindels explained at about 12:15 p.m
Wires were knocked down as a result of the crash
“Main Road from the Town Hall to South Lane is closed for a MVA and wires down
Town Hall is not accessible,” noted the Granville Fire Department on their Facebook page Wednesday morning,“ Please use South lane
no injuries were reported in this incident
GRANVILLE ― The scoreboard said Granville 12
But boys lacrosse coaches Paul Kirk and Levi Jacob left the turf at Walter J
Hodges Stadium also looking at the bigger picture for the future of the sport in Licking County
Kirk's Blue Aces remain top dogs in the area
and Jacob's Johnnies are trying to climb the ladder and challenge the top Central Ohio programs
and that's why Kirk has started 74OH Lacrosse
three-week summer training programs based in the county for boys and girls ages 3-12
"I've talked to Levi and (Newark coach) Caleb Nilo
We want to give kids in our area the opportunity to be excited and passionate about the game
because they pretty much have to go to Columbus," said Kirk
who played at Licking Valley and Wittenberg and also coached at Valley and Newark
"We have several ideas and we want to keep growing it in this community and take it to the next level."

we've been fortunate to get our middle school and youth programs going
We've talked about doing intersquad games between Newark
and we need to talk about possibilities at other schools
and we're trying to get something going up that way."
There was plenty of talent on display during the game on April 29
Even though reloading Granville dominated from the beginning (it has won three in a row after an 0-6 start against a brutal schedule)
Jacob and their staffs were still coaching players up
but we've been playing a lot better," said Granville senior attack Josh Boggs
who scored three goals along with classmate and attack man Beckett Long
We lost so much from last year and we hadn't played much together
but we're finding that chemistry and coming together."
Sophomore Titus Terebuh and Long quickly put the Blue Aces ahead 2-0 before Jason Hettinger got Johnstown on the board off a pass from Will Taylor
But when trying to pass it back to his goalie
a Johnnie inadvertently put the ball in Granville's net
Boggs and Long then scored again as they led 5-1 after the first
Long and Boggs struck once more before Terebuh assisted his senior brother Noble for a 9-1 halftime lead
"It's a good experience," Titus said about playing with his brother (younger brother Roman will be a freshman next year)
but it's much better this year and we have a connection."
Noble found Boggs just beside the net with a great pass
then scored himself as Granville went up 11-1 before left-hander Taylor ripped home a long shot from 20 yards out for Johnstown
Woody Struthers got in on the Aces' scoring parade
then Taylor again knocked one home from about 15 yards
you try to look at the positives," Jacob said

We have to do better against the big-name brands
flip that switch and play with confidence."
The Johnnies and Newark are both 6-6 and will clash May 13 at White Field
Granville's schedule lightens up a bit as it tries to build tournament momentum
"We've gotten better throughout the season," Kirk said
then they responded well against Bexley and DeSales and the effort level went up
We've relied on some of the younger guys and given them a chance."
Freshman Jack Vilvens made his first varsity start in goal and had been playing junior varsity
"He started out the season playing a different position
then moved to goalie and did really well," Titus Terebuh said
Better with our pickups in practice and finishing strong."
Boggs said the Blue Aces are due to win a close game and are capable of knocking someone off
"We're not fighting on the field," he said

Students at Granville East Public School have provided representatives from Sydney Metro with feedback about the project
The inquiring minds of students at Granville East Public School have been putting one of Australia’s largest transport projects through its paces
Stage 3 students at the western Sydney school recently investigated the pros and cons of the Sydney Metro West project
Principal Louise Reynolds described the project as student agency at its best
“We do this inquiry project called Grapple
where students work in teams on a real life problem or dilemma,” Ms Reynolds said
“Sydney Metro was a great opportunity to look at technology
School captain Mustapha Kassem said the project should have a largely positive impact
“Where it’s already running it’s been helping people travel around Sydney in a faster way
so it reduces pollution and congestion,” he said
in Parramatta some stores had to shut down because of the construction
Year 5 student Bassam Hames-Kara-Hassam was looking forward to how accessible the Metro would be
Ms Reynolds said the findings of the students’ investigation were presented to visiting representatives from Sydney Metro
“It was a chance to showcase their learning,” she said
“Because part of learning is not just learning something but being able to articulate it and being able to say why it’s important.”
Year 6 student Jacquie Qiu was impressed by the speed of the service
which she said would change the lives of commuters
“The speed of it will help them to travel faster and get to places on time
It will also help businesses despite the disruption during construction,” she said
a lot of people will go on it and it will be safe
Ms Reynolds said the project had the potential to spark new interests for students
“Students have seen jobs they never knew existed,” she said
“One of our First Nations students came back and said they’re looking for First Nations workers
That’s something he never would’ve known had he not been part of this.”

GRANVILLE — Sophia Patena has never doubted her abilities
but one mighty swing early April 30 went a long way for her peace of mind
The senior outfielder on Granville's softball team hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning
driving in six runs for the Blue Aces in a 10-2 victory against visiting Heath in Licking County League play
that’s when I sort of just go in there carefree,” Patena said
“It’s less stressful when you have already had one good hit
This has been a season unlike any other Granville’s three seniors have experienced
but they still have time to put the proper cap on a record-setting run
the program’s single-season and career record holder for home runs
She also struck out six and scattered six hits from the circle
“This is the last time we are going to play as a team together
We are all trying to peak at the right time and come together as a team,” said Lodge
who is a classmate of Patena and utility player Claire Edwards
“We want to really go after it this next month.”
4-8) has been in rebuilding mode since reaching a Division II regional final last May
remain dangerous with Lodge and Patena at the top of the order
Lodge singled in front of Patena’s home run to the opposite field in right in the bottom of the first inning
Patena then crushed a three-run homer to left in the second and a solo homer to left in the fifth
“I have been using that as my motivation to get it back up there because I don’t want to have a worse senior season than junior season,” said Patena
The only thing that’s a little lower is my batting average.”
She is hitting just shy of .500 after hitting over .500 in 2024
Freshman Aubrey Lackey homered against Heath
Junior Sydney Cottrill added two hits and a run
and freshman Shannon Houser doubled and scored twice
The Blue Aces also played error-free behind Lodge
Lackey fielded a ball deep in the hole at short and flipped to Houser at third to allow Lodge to escape a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning
“We have asked the seniors to set the tone,” Granville coach Brooke Warehime said
their talent means even if they sort of take a pitch off
Our younger players learning from them have to understand you have to stay focused the entire time
We have asked the seniors to really stay focused and try to lead by example
Senior Shelby Moore hit a two-run homer for Heath (10-11
which was unable to gain ground on first-place Lakewood
remaining two games behind in the Cardinal Division
Senior Kyndall Spicer added a double and a single
and sophomore Kylie Green struck out three and allowed two runs in 3⅓ innings of relief
which forfeited the season’s first two wins due to using an ineligible player
still have an opportunity to make it a memorable May
“Our season started off better than it’s been going
and I feel like these past few weeks people have been really upset with how our games have been going,” Patena said
I really just want to end the season on a positive note and cherish the last few games I will have as a high school player.”

there were lofty hopes for the young stallion in the breeding shed
The handsome bay checked all the boxes for success
being by imported French classic winner Sir Gallahad III out of Marguerite
a top-class stakes winning son of Commando
Marguerite had already produced the high class stakes winner Petee Wrack
Gallant Fox had not only won the Triple Crown of the Kentucky Derby
Saratoga Cup and Jockey Club gold Cup to his illustrious resume
Having been bred and raced by William Woodward Sr and standing at Claiborne Farm
the quality of his mares was never in doubt
coming up with 1935 Triple Crown champion Omaha in his first crop as well as Omaha’s full brother
Ascot Gold Cup winner Flares and major stakes winner Calumet Dick
Somewhat overlooked after the passage of so many decades is the star of Gallant Fox’s third crop
the first horse to be officially voted Horse of the Year in American racing
a classic winner and a Hall of Fame inductee
Granville was bred and owned by William Woodward Sr
Woodward was a scion of a very wealthy old family that had made its fortune in textiles
He found his own niche as a banker and had been one of the first directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York
He had developed a passion for horses and racing as a young boy
when he accompanied his father to see Sir Dixon win the Belmont Stakes
He was part of the team of Arthur Hancock Sr.
Fairbairn who purchased Sir Gallahad III and imported him to Kentucky
and transformed it into one of the nation’s leading stud farms
did not seem to be the type of high quality mare one would expect for a breeder like William Woodward
She made seven starts and failed to win or even place
had enough of a pedigree to be kept in Woodward’s broodmare portfolio
a French-bred son of French champion Sardanapale
Imported to the United States as a yearling along with his dam
Sarmatian never made it to the races but became one of the first stallions stood by Woodward at Arthur Hancock Sr.’s Claiborne Farm near Paris
The dam of Gravita was the unraced Gravitate
a daughter of 1913 champion 3-year-old colt Rock View
Gravita hailed from the family of the British mare Enigma
a family whose members included One Thousand Guineas and Oaks winner Amiable; Kentucky Derby winner Reigh Count; and Ascot Gold Cup champion William the Third
whose full sister Gravitation was Granville’s fourth dam
Woodward boarded his mares at Claiborne Farm
Granville was a good hard bay with a slim blaze coursing down his face
He greatly resembled his sire Gallant Fox both in terms of his bay coat and blazed face and his tall
Granville was given to trainer “Sunny” Jim Fitzsimmons
Joining him in the veteran trainer’s racing stable was another youngster and future Hall of Famer
While the latter slogged through 35 starts that season for just five wins
the more highly regarded Granville went to the post just seven times
On the surface this may have seemed disappointing
but the son of Gallant Fox showed some promise
in the Champagne Stakes and the Babylon Handicap
William Woodward bred his horses for stamina with the classic races in mind and hopes were high that another son of Gallant Fox could dominate the American classics in 1936
the first half of Granville’s 3-year-old season was one of turbulent frustration
The season got off to a promising start in a mile and 70 yard allowance race at the Jamaica track in New York on April 21
Granville won as he pleased by five lengths
setting him up perfectly for the Wood Memorial
over the same track and distance four days later
that was where the ill luck that was to dog Granville throughout the spring started and continued with unrelenting fury throughout four straight of the most important races of his career
Granville went to the post for the Wood Memorial coupled as an entry with Teufel
a maiden owned by Wheatley Stable and Ogden Mills
the brother of Wheatley Stable’s matriarch
Granville ran a winning race until the wire
when he was nipped by the slimmest of noses by Teufel
“Sunny” Jim Fitzsimmons calmly told the press
”Don’t worry about Granville
But he is just like his daddy–a loafer
You remember how Gallant Fox always had to have a horse in front of him to make him try
When Stout came back he said the colt stopped trying after he put Delphinium away and just loafed
The Kentucky Derby a week later at Churchill Downs in Louisville proved a disaster for Granville and Jimmy Stout
Granville was seriously impeded at the start and unseated his rider
Schwartz’s Bold Venture won the classic
Better things were hoped for in the Preakness Stakes two weeks later
Granville ran a superb race only to have victory elude him right on the wire as Bold Venture caught him and got his nose down on the line at precisely the perfect time
The Belmont Stakes was the ultimate goal for Granville
The question was how to get him there primed for his best
so it was decided that the one-mile Withers was not the route to go
the 1 ¼ mile Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park against older horses was chosen
It was a fine field of 12 that went to the post on May 30
Jeffords color bearer who had come into his own the previous autumn by winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup and Lawrence Realization after chasing Omaha home in the Preakness and Belmont; Hal Price Headley’s hard-knocking stakes winner Whopper; and Brookmeade Stable’s highly-regarded stakes winner Good Goods
Granville was actually giving as much as 11 pounds to his more seasoned competitors Firethorn
the Fates continued to hound Granville with unrelenting
The colt ran the best race of his career thus far and still it was not enough to win
The official race chart noted: “Granville ran a remarkable race
opened a wide lead and appeared a sure winner at the sixteenth pole but tired suddenly in the last 20 yards.”
That was just enough to give the hard-charging Firethorn the slimmest of advantages
It took several minutes for the photo finish camera to separate them and award the victory to Firethorn
Frustration reigned among Granville’s fans
Others believed that Granville just did not have the fire to close the deal when headed by another horse in a fierce battle
Still others blamed jockey Jimmy Stout and felt he should be grounded in favor of a more experienced rider
Woodward maintained confidence in Stout and refused to listen to calls to replace him
His confidence in his colt was never in doubt
Granville would race in the Belmont Stakes a week later with Jimmy Stout in the irons
With the premature retirement of Bold Venture due to injury
Widener’s Florida Derby and Withers Stakes winner Brevity; Granville’s stablemate Teufel
his conqueror in the Wood Memorial; Walter M Jeffords’s Man o’ War colt Jean Bart
third place finisher in the Preakness; Hal Price Headley’s multiple stakes winner Hollyrood; and John Hay Whitney’s rapidly improving Royal Minstrel colt Mr
grabbing the lead from the start and running all of the contestants
Bones led throughout the entire 1 ½ miles and only succumbed at the wire
Granville and rider Jimmy Stout were not intimidated by the fleet Mr
As the official race chart noted: ”Granville ran a remarkable race
began to move in the run down the backstretch…caught Mr
Bones at the sixteenth pole and outgamed him to the finish.”
Woodward beamed with pride at having won his fourth Belmont Stakes in six years
August Belmont presented Woodward with the trophy
and a very pleasant one.” From out in the Atlantic Ocean
called his friend Woodward on the ship to shore telephone to offer congratulations on Granville’s victory and then congratulated John Hay Whitney on the courageous run of Mr
after a spring of frustration and heartbreak
the Fates had decided to smile on Granville
and they continued to do so throughout the summer
as the Woodward colt was never to experience defeat again
his next start would have been the Dwyer Stakes a couple of weeks after the Belmont
But trainer Fitzsimmons opted to sit that one out and give his newest classic winner a bit more recovery time
Bones proved his Belmont performance was no fluke by easily taking the Dwyer
Granville was rested until his next scheduled start
the 1 ¼ mile Arlington Classic at Arlington Park near Chicago on July 25
A field of ten went to the post for the Classic
The answer came in 2:03 ⅕ after the starting gates opened
The filly Sparta got off to the best start and held the lead around the first turn with the rest of the field tightly bunched behind her
eased the Belair colt back to the rear and then moved outside to avoid traffic
Bones moved up and at the head of the stretch was primed for victory
But nothing was going to deny Granville that day as he swooped by to win by 2 ½ lengths over Mr
The press gleefully reported Woodward’s subtle dig at Stout’s naysayers when he told his winning jockey
and they said you couldn’t ride.”
the quest for the 3-year-old championship took Granville to Saratoga
where his sire Gallant Fox had fallen victim to the Spa’s reputation as the “Graveyard of Favorites” at the hands of Jim Dandy in the Travers Stakes six years previously
Granville nearly became another victim of the track’s “curse” in his first of three starts there that summer
Granville seemed well on his way to such a victory when he suddenly began to loaf after grabbing the lead and was then all out to defeat the fast-closing Memory Book by a mere half length
Granville’s connections had no time to digest the near upset as their colt went postward in the Travers Stakes only four days later
Five horses went to the post for the Travers on a dark and rainy afternoon with the track a muddy mess: Granville; Memory Book; the Calumet Farm entry of Count Morse and Sun Teddy
with the latter the more fancied candidate; and Ogden Phipps’s tough gelding White Cockade
was sent out to a long lead from the break and held it until the top of the stretch and then relinquished his lead to Sun Teddy
Sun Teddy charged ahead but was soon joined by Granville
With Sun Teddy on the inside under Eddie Arcaro
and Granville on the outside under Jimmy Stout
the two colts raced as a team through the Saratoga stretch
Owner Woodward would not allow friends to congratulate him until the photo declared his colt the official winner
this was the first Travers Stakes in which the golden trophy awarded to Man o’ War following his triumph over Sir Barton in the 1920 match race in Canada was presented to the winner of the Travers and has been ever since
would be his debut against older performers
Due to rainstorms leaving the track sloppy
scratches left the race a literal match race between Granville and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt’s hugely popular weight-carrying champion Discovery
Discovery carried 126 pounds to Granville’s 116
Discovery had not tasted defeat in a weight-for-age race for two years
so Granville was afforded not much chance of defeating the 5-year-old champion
No one told Granville he was not supposed to win
Granville grabbed the lead from the start when normally he made his run from behind
turning back three futile challenges from Discovery
winning the historic Saratoga race by six lengths in a time of 3:00 ⅘
This performance sealed the 3-year-old championship for Granville
Horse of the Year was still up for grabs as Discovery had a strong case for that title with victories in five stakes
There were only two more dances left for the season on Granville’s dance card
the Lawrence Realization and the Jockey Club Gold Cup
Granville easily took the Lawrence Realization by two lengths and seemed in perfect condition to add the Gold Cup to his laurels only a week later
Granville rapped himself during the running of the Realization and was stopped for the year
his retirement from the turf was announced
with five second place finishes and two thirds for earnings 0f $111,820
A committee of Daily Racing Form experts for the first time cast votes for official championships
honoring Granville as the first American Horse of the Year to be so selected
His brilliant achievements on the racetrack brought him induction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1997
Woodward never raced the triumvirate of Gallant Fox
and Granville in the United States as 4-year-olds
Gallant Fox and Granville were retired and Omaha was sent to England to race at four
the only question was where to stand him at stud
Woodward kept his stallions at Claiborne Farm
But with the father/son/grandson team of Sir Gallahad III
and Omaha in residence at the beginning of 1937
Granville’s presence in the Claiborne stallion barn would be superfluous
Woodward leased Granville to Virginia breeder Kenneth N
sire of Sir Gallahad III and his full brother
Granville was seen as an excellent replacement
Granville stood at Kentmere for two years before returning to Kentucky to stand alongside old rival Mr
Bones at John Hay Whitney’s Mare’s Nest Stud on Paris Pike near Lexington
Granville was sold to New Mexico breeder Dr
New Mexico for the benefit of his health (he had been diagnosed with tuberculosis as a young man) won enough money from betting on a race to build a seven-bed hospital
Granville was an abject failure as a stallion
the former champion was donated to the U.S
Remount Station in New Mexico and died in total obscurity in 1951
No information on his tenure in New Mexico can be found in the local historical museum
who drove to Kentucky with her father to bring Granville to their New Mexico ranch
sadly no longer has any distinct memories of the champion horse who died 74 years ago
the lesser known champion son of Gallant Fox
became the answer to a trivia question–who was the first American Thoroughbred to be officially voted Horse of the Year
