She was given “a suitably royal send-off” at a small service in Melbourne’s Yarraville on Sunday, according to her partner, writer David Greagg. Greenwood, who lived in nearby Seddon, died on 26 March. Greagg, posting on Greenwood’s official facebook page on Monday, said he had refrained from making a public announcement until after the service. “Kerry was an extremely private person and had no wish to share her pain with anyone,” he wrote. He said her “condition had deteriorated to the point where I could not keep her at home any longer”. “The end was mercifully quick thereafter.” Read moreBorn in 1954 in the inner-city Melbourne suburb of Footscray Greenwood started writing fiction as a child and wrote her first book as a teenager – a fantasy novel titled The Magic Stone She later studied English and law at the University of Melbourne and worked as a criminal defence lawyer for Victorian Legal Aid for more than two decades Her enthusiasm for justice and writing bore literary fruit about a mystery-solving baker in Melbourne Greenwood was given the Ned Kelly Lifetime Achievement Award recognising her “outstanding contribution” to Australian crime writing awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to literature ‘Kerry gifted us one of the most powerful and positive and inspiring heroines’: Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Even after her writing career took off in the 1990s, Greenwood continued to work as a locum solicitor. At her funeral service on Sunday, her brother said, “The quest for justice is what drove her.” While Greenwood’s publisher said her writing had slowed in recent years due to poor health, she was still writing until recently, posting on Facebook on 18 March about the newest Phryne Fisher book, due out later this year. “Murder in the Cathedral is undergoing transformation from an extensively edited Word file into proper pages. This is a slow process, involving mysterious alchemy, scattering of rose petals, muttered incantations and the like, but it progresses,” she wrote. away without fanfare to those who really needed it: fellow authors down on their luck an embroiderer and a seamstress who made most of her own clothes as well as a chorister and a very wise and exceptionally kind woman curious about almost everything – Kerry will be sincerely missed by her family On Instagram who brought Greenwood’s famous sleuth to life on screen wrote: “Kerry gifted us one distance of the Footscray football ground and discovered very early on that following Our Team was compulsory even though she didn’t actually like football she would help her mother prepare refreshments for the muddied family members who would take refuge at half-time from the rigours of the Barkly Street end outer she found her home village bedecked in red white and blue and celebrated with her football-mad Beloved and she was the first person from her school ever to study law at the University of Melbourne We moved into a precarious share house in Carlton acquired our first cat and finished up in a weatherboard house in Seddon where we stayed for the rest of Kerry’s long life It became a refuge for lost and stray animals but Quark accepted the position of watch-duck and lived out a long and happy life as warden of the back garden Kerry had two burning ambitions in life: to be a Legal Aid solicitor and defend the poor and voiceless; and to be a famous author When summoned to Government House to receive her Medal of the Order of Australia in 2020 it was made clear that this award was for writing books They have sold well over a million copies and have been translated into a dozen languages Her detective Phryne Fisher is her best-known character Kerry also won renown for her series centred on baker–detective Corinna Chapman as well as several YA books dealing with Australian history “The central core of her heart was her passion for justice.” Kerry accepted an offer from Every Cloud Productions to dramatise Phryne for television Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger consulted her frequently and later described how helpful she was to deal with wherein everyone worked hard to make a period piece to remember But the central core of her heart was her passion for justice The only time Kerry was ever at a loss for words was when an impertinent man accused her of waxing fat on the profits of crime she appeared one day a week in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court for what was essentially petrol money The cost to the public purse for her brilliant advocacy was about six dollars per client One of the best tributes to her is on her Facebook page where one of the police prosecutors praised her work police officers and magistrates all came to trust and esteem her David Greagg and Kerry Greenwood in a cameo appearance on Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries What this meant in practice was that when she was faced with a genuinely deserving hard-luck story and had given her client the Paddington-style Hard Stare to weed out the mendacious she would push out the boat beyond the breakwater and her client would be reprieved from prison Very few advocates are granted such an opportunity and it was only because Kerry’s given word was ironclad Many a young law student watched her advocacy open-mouthed realising that it was possible for a woman to succeed in this brutally hard profession The Victoria Police gave due recognition of this late in her life by awarding her an honorary police officer’s badge Kerry experienced tremendous difficulty articulating the word “no”; in consequence she supported just about every charity going embroiderer and seamstress who made most of her clothes The last word on her vocation may be left to her lifelong friend Mark whose words at the funeral are a clarion-call to all of us: “Jesus’ promise in the Sermon on the Mount can be hard to believe or hold to as seekers after justice are all too often discounted we can maybe see the counsel of the Rabbi Tarfon: ‘It is not incumbent upon you to complete the task but neither goals in 31 league appearances for Marseille But the Man Utd academy product was dropped for two games in a row in March with Marseille boss Roberto de Zerbi insisting that the striker must “sacrifice” more De Zerbi said: “No one can have more respect for him than I do “If he wants to achieve his ambition of becoming a champion sacrifice more and be more determined.” the 23-year-old was suspended by the Red Devils on January 30 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online He faced charges including attempted rape and assault but the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February 2023 that the case had been discontinued And now The Sun newspaper claim that former Man Utd striker Greenwood is ‘pining for a return to England —  putting a string of Prem clubs on red alert’ A source has revealed that Greenwood is hoping that the “vitriol he previously faced has died down a bit and people may have moved on” with the “novelty” of living in France wearing off The source close to the situation told The Sun: “When Mason first left United he loved Spain “He loved the fact he could just play football and his life off the pitch was not the in Yarraville in 2020, at an event organised by Sisters in Crime Australia seated next to Kerry and surrounded by her fans Kerry died last week after suffering ill health for a number of years The tributes are beginning to flow in from across the world from her many fans and followers She has left us a great legacy in the form of her many books and our memories of the author herself In 1989, I had the pleasure of meeting with Kerry shortly after the publication of Cocaine Blues the first in what would come to be the Phryne Fisher series I well remember suggesting that it would make a great period crime drama Kerry and I first met in Mietta’s restaurant where we sat at a small table in an elegant art deco bar how she had been trying to write a novel about highwaymen but had been persuaded by her then publishers She had at some point written a thesis about the strikes on the Melbourne wharfs in 1928 and 1929 and had read every newspaper she could find so she already had the perfect historical backdrop for a crime novel set in the period The idea for Miss Fisher came to her on the tram going home When it was later suggested that her charming female action hero might bear some similarity to the Saint or James Bond, Kerry trenchantly responded with the comment that Phryne “had fewer product endorsements and a better class of lovers” Kerry was always a stylish writer and Cocaine Blues opens with brief first paragraph that does not waste time in getting the story moving: Over the general exclamation could be heard the shrill shriek of Madame St Clair It was with great glee that Kerry informed me that Madame St Clair’s exclamation was a direct steal from The Adventures of Tintin as created by the Belgian comic artist Hergé at our next meeting Kerry presented me with her French edition of Les Bijoux de La Castafiore (The Castafiore Emerald) The anecdote reveals not only the eclectic range of Kerry’s sources (and the fact that she read French and was something of a polymath) in her care for the waifs and strays that she encounters not forgetting that Kerry was a barrister who worked full-time as a criminal defence lawyer for Legal Aid there were relatively few Australian crime writers being published The crime writing scene now is very different Carmel Shute from the Australian chapter of Sisters in Crime informed me that over 150 crime fiction and true crime books by women will be published in Australia in 2025 It is testimony to the increasing popularity of a literary form which women have embraced as a way to tell the stories that matter to them Quite a few of those books sit within what has often been characterised as the “cosy” genre: a subgenre of crime fiction to which Kerry’s crime fiction certainly belongs compared to the kind of “gritty” crime fiction that wins accolades This has obscured the achievement of crime fiction such as Kerry’s in which historical and contemporary social issues are reflected back to us in ways that give us pause even as they are presented in a form designed to entertain This is Kerry’s legacy: a wealth of entertainment with a heart Her novels are provocations to care about social justice even as her creativity will continue to inspire Correction: an earlier version of this article mistakenly stated that the Sisters in Crime Australia screening was in 2022 GREENWOOD -- The City Council will and releasing music with him since 2008 – and working privately long before that I think an artistic project that combines Arab and Jewish musicians is worthwhile And one that reminds everyone that the Jewish cultural roots in countries like Iraq and Yemen go back for thousands of years no art is as ‘important’ as stopping all the death and suffering around us And silencing Israeli artists for being born Jewish in Israel doesn’t seem like any way to reach an understanding between the two sides of this apparently endless conflict.” Greenwood partnered with Tassa for an album Egyptian singer from Old Trafford it’s fair to assume United are unlikely to hand him an opportunity to return to the Premier League they would certainly keep an eye on his situation as the Mancunians included a 50 There was an antipodean pride that, in those pre-Bluey days, a character born in Collingwood had penetrated the culture internationally, and based on cool not cringe. It ran for three seasons, followed by a sequel movie released into cinemas, and considering the limited budgets of Australian TV productions, it looked great, full of period details for its 1920s setting, especially Phryne’s lush costumes. Essie Davis in Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears. Credit: METHODEIn Essie Davis’s performance, Phryne was dynamic and smart, and never backed down from a fight that needed to be litigated, and guided by a her empathy and clear sense of social justice. She was hot and cool, and could navigate the docks as well as the front parlours of Toorak mansions. No doubt the series was a hit and one of Australia’s most memorable shows of the 2010s, but all that spark had been in Greenwood’s books. Spanning 22 novels and one short story collection, Phryne made her debut in the 1989 book, Cocaine Blues. The year is 1928, which is, of course, conveniently just before the Wall Street crash and the onset of the Great Depression, and The Honourable Phryne Fisher returns to Melbourne from England. Phryne wasn’t born rich, anything but, but her father inherited an estate after the line of succession was decimated during the First World War, which transported the Melbourne clan to polite society on the other side of the globe. After proving adept at recovering a stolen diamond necklace, Phryne was engaged by a well-to-do couple concerned about their daughter’s well-being in Australia. Docking in Melbourne, Phryne checks into the Windsor Hotel, and eventually buys a Victorian house in St Kilda. As a nod to Arthur Conan Doyle, the house number is 221B. Murder in Montparnasse is the 12th book in the Phryne Fisher series. Credit: Rod Moran/AllenCollecting a tribe of friends and staff – companion Dot, butler and cook Mr and Mrs Butler, the red raggers Bert and Cec, adopted daughters Ruth and Jane, sometime-lover Lin Chung, doctor Elizabeth Macmillan, detective inspector Jack Robinson and constable Hugh Collins – Phryne is set to conquer the world of crime, shocking some, saving more and always being only herself. The books take her everywhere her 1923 Hispano-Suiza will go, and sometimes a Gypsy Moth plane which she, of course, can fly. Each book is structured on a different story – Murder on the Ballarat Train recalls the twisty mind of Agatha Christie, Raisins and Almonds takes readers inside the Jewish intellectual community, Death Before Wicket travels to Sydney while Death by Water takes to the seas on a P&O cruise. There are mysteries at the nunnery, at a fabulous, blow-out New Year’s Eve party and even in the idyllic surrounds of Daylesford. One case was connected to Phryne’s past in Paris where she had been an artist’s model in the heady days after the war where she had joined an ambulance unit. Greenwood’s books didn’t reinvent in the genre, the writer followed the tropes established by her forebears such as Christie, but she did create a character that was very much distinct, one who could waltz onto any case but who felt as if she was essential in every scenario. Phryne was brave and didn’t care a lick for convention and social expectation, and that was her attraction. She eschewed so-called moral codes of the era and was famously promiscuous, judging harshly those who would impose their puritanism on others. Phryne had no more respect for established institutions than she did for the people they oppressed. She had thoroughly modern views on everything from capitalism to abortion rights. Before her death, Greenwood posted on Facebook that there was a new Phryne book in the works, to be called Murder in the Cathedral, which is reportedly due out later this year. Toorak mansion Roberto De Zerbi has explained the reason behind Mason Greenwood's recent slump in form as he vowed to turn the forward into a Marseille great Two planned UK performances by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and Israeli musician Dudu Tassa have been canceled with no official statement issued by the venues or artists scheduled for June at the Beacon in Bristol and Hackney Church in London were part of a longstanding artistic collaboration between Greenwood and Tassa that began over a decade ago While the reason for the cancellations has not been disclosed the events had been targeted by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) which described the scheduled performances as efforts to whitewash what it called the “genocide” in Gaza and the “underlying settler-colonial apartheid regime.” “We reiterate our call for all venues to refuse to program this complicit event that can only artwash genocide,” the movement wrote in a post on X Greenwood and Tassa have been collaborating and releasing music since 2008 and have continued to perform together despite pressure on Greenwood to cancel his shows with Tassa Last June, Greenwood refused pressure from BDS to cancel his tour with Tassa and criticized their call as “unprogressive” “I think an artistic project that combines Arab and Jewish musicians is worthwhile “Others choose to believe this kind of project is unjustifiable and are urging the silence of this – or any – artistic effort made by Israeli Jews But I can’t join that call: The silencing of Israeli filmmakers/musicians/dancers when their work tours abroad – especially when it’s at the urging of their fellow western filmmakers/musicians/artists – feels unprogressive to me not least because it’s these people that are invariably the most progressive members of any society,” he added The guitarist pointed out that Tassa’s grandfather was perhaps the best-known Iraqi composer and was one of the legendary Al Kuwaity brothers whose songs are still featured on Arab-wide radio stations “though sadly their heritage as Jews is never mentioned any longer,” he said “No art is as 'important' as stopping all the death and suffering around us And silencing Israeli artists for being born Jewish in Israel doesn't seem like any way to reach an understanding between the two sides of this apparently endless conflict." BDS has long urged musicians to call off shows in Israel or cancel collaborations with Israeli artists While a number of politically active musicians have heeded to the pressure a range of others have rejected the boycott call In 2017, before a Radiohead concert in Tel Aviv, dozens of artists, including notorious anti-Israel activist Roger Waters, sent a letter to the band urging its to cancel the concert in order to “pressure Israel to end its violation of basic rights and international law.” Thom Yorke, the band’s frontman, fired back at the boycott calls, calling them “an extraordinary waste of energy”.
