Picture by Zac Lowe.Speaking to the Leader as the sun began to set this evening
Sean Hayne's demeanour could best be described as one of cautious pride
Hayne's perennial pragmatism wouldn't allow him to celebrate too raucously
"It's a good start for the year for us," he said
so we've got to get ready for that on a short turnaround ..
The early stages of the game certainly didn't look as though Gunnedah would spring the upset
The visibly nervous hosts made a number of errors in the opening 15 minutes which were punished quickly and severely by an alert Boars side at Kitchener Park
Adrian Smith opened the scoring after leaping over the outstretched arms of a Gunnedah defender
before former captain-coach Mick Watton showed that he still poses ample threat on the field with a try of his own
a switch seemed to flick in the Bulldogs and the mistakes dried up
scraped over on the left edge in the 23rd minute soon to be followed by Will Patterson
the score was 10-10 and the momentum has settled in Gunnedah's arms
Patterson notched his second try less than ten minutes after the resumption of play
and the Bulldogs were in full control as Moree uncharacteristically struggled to maintain possession
View +17 PhotosPictures by Zac Lowe."We were in that arm wrestle the whole way," Boars co-coach Jack Durheim said
"Our discipline and ball control really let us down
Last year we were getting the bounce of the ball and really running away with it
this year we've got to work a bit harder."
But with the score at 16-10 and the hosts seemingly in control
Bulldogs captain Lincon Smith was sin-binned for high contact
Home fans' stomachs were doing somersaults soon after when Jake Tighe crossed for a try (which went unconverted) to bring Moree within two points
Gunnedah survived 10 minutes while only conceding the one try
but the guys have been working hard on their defence and they're working hard for each other
so I was always confident we could hold them out," he said
and the shoe was soon placed on the other foot when one of the Boars was sin-binned with less than 10 minutes in the game
It did not take long before newly-signed halfback Ezra Gibson chipped a grubber beneath the crossbars and grounded the ball by the skin of his teeth
That put the Bulldogs' lead out to eight points
and felt like the nail in the coffin for Moree
Callum Hayne's subsequent try in the final seconds of the game was then a cherry on the cake of Gunnedah's victory
The result marked Moree's second consecutive loss
Left to sit on the sidelines by a hamstring injury incurred during their match against Werris Creek
Durheim acknowledged that the Boars are now being chased by the rest of the competition and need to handle that pressure better
"We just need to get ourselves to that next level
to match the enthusiasm that other teams are coming at us with."

Drought makes it nigh unbearableSouth Australia is grappling with a once-in-a-century drought and its effects are far-reaching - both financially and psychologically
I've been privileged to be able to sit down with farmers who have opened up about what it has done to their businesses and mental health
including one you went to school with and who you've known all your life
through no fault of their own but simply due to the massive financial pressure you're under
A farmer told me that conversation was the hardest day he'd had in 20 years of farming
Imagine setting up a business you think is almost bulletproof
through investing in cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art facilities
only to produce a small fraction of what you would in a typical season
Imagine seeing $2 billion worth of investment being poured into the state's steelworks to keep it going
while you wait months to see if you can access a few thousand from government support programs
It's not only the drought causing serious heartbreak
it is coupled with the massive rise in the cost of living and electricity prices that are through the roof
Even if a break does happen in South Australia
which some forecasts are predicting won't happen until June
One farmer I spoke to said it would take at least eight years to recover from this past season
I've had farmers seriously questioning why they do what they do when it can result in such heartbreak
I could see why they did what they do - they had an amazing operation
farmed in a beautiful part of the world and ran a mob of obviously very contented livestock
but I hope by listening to what they had to say
But the only factor that will really help is the heavens opening and the much-yearned-for break to the season finally happening

or just walking down the paddock to check the cattle or feed the horses
"I thought it would be nice to have some of our own pieces and so was getting a few bits and pieces made for them," Mrs Meissner said
"And then it sort of escalated from there."
Before she knew it, she was researching materials and manufacturers
and after about 18 months of trialling and testing samples and designs
but the early arrival of her youngest daughter pushed that back a month or so
Wanting to create "a nice mix of pieces you can wear all the time"
the range reflects her love of "those vintage styles"
"I just personally find that a lot of the fashion for young girls
they're making them look quite old and I didn't want them [her daughters] looking older
At the moment offering sizing for newborns up to size 10 (she has had requests to do some bigger sizes), the first collection focused on girls
Mrs Meissner has created a range of shirts for boys
Not her first venture into the small business world - in September 2022 she purchased Ever You
which creates mulberry silk pillowcases - she was able to lean on some of what she learned from running that in establishing Little Wardrobe Co
although starting from scratch "was a real eye-opener" and she certainly had her doubts leading up to the launch
"I remember saying to my husband this could be a real disaster
and I'm going to be gifting clothes to our friends and family for the next 20 years to get rid of stuff," she said
Mrs Meissner admits she has been "really shocked" by the response
she then started reaching out to businesses about stocking her products
stretching from Bowen in Queensland down to Sydney
Picture by Meg Wilkin PhotographyLocally the range is available at The Magic Pudding in Tamworth
"I've been really lucky that I was able to reach out to [owner] Sara [Winston-Smith] and she was extremely responsive," she said
She's in the midst of potentially adding more stockists with several stores expressing interest in the newly-released autumn/winter collection
"We've got two collections in this new drop," Mrs Meissner said
which is more sort of blues and then Wildflower Lane
which is sort of dusty pinks and quite a cool bit different green
Mrs Meissner said she can't see a day when she isn't teaching "in some sort of capacity"
and I think I studied for so long I don't want to walk away from it
but it [Little Wardrobe Co] certainly will give a lot more flexibility with the girls and being able to go and do stuff with them," she said

A brand-new event is set to tee off in Gunnedah this April, with the inaugural NSW Family Classic promising a fresh and innovative addition to the junior golf calendar.
This unique three-day tournament will bring together juniors and their families in a two-person team competition, combining the love of golf with an opportunity to strengthen community ties and showcase the best of regional NSW.
Scheduled for the school holiday period, the NSW Family Classic is designed to stand out from traditional golf events by focusing on family involvement.
Each team will feature one junior golfer alongside a parent, grandparent, sibling, or relative. Recognising that not all families have multiple golfers, invitations will also be extended to club members to ensure everyone has a chance to participate.
Dale Hughes, General Manager of Jack Newton Junior Golf, says the NSW Family Classic is a much-needed addition to the junior golf calendar. It creates an event that is as much about connection as it is about competition.
“This event is about bringing families together through golf,” Mr Hughes said.
“We already know the sport has a strong community focus, but this tournament takes that a step further by allowing families to compete as a team. It’s an exciting new concept that we believe will resonate with junior golfers and their loved ones.”
Gunnedah Shire Council Mayor Cr Colleen Fuller welcomed the tournament, highlighting the positive impact it will have on the local community.
“We are absolutely delighted to support this golf event in Gunnedah,” she said.
“It will be a fantastic showcase of talented young golfers that will no doubt serve as inspiration for aspiring players in our community.”
“It will also bring lots of visitors to our shire which will be a wonderful boost for our local economy and create a great buzz around town.”
The event is expected to attract 100 to 120 players, primarily from outside the region, bringing a welcome boost to the local economy.
Visitors will stay in Gunnedah for several nights, boosting local businesses in accommodation, dining, and transport while experiencing everything the region has to offer.
Hughes believes Gunnedah Golf Club is the perfect venue to launch the event.
“Gunnedah has a fantastic reputation for supporting junior golf, with strong development programs and a real passion for growing the game,” he said.
“It’s great to see the club taking the lead in hosting an event that prioritizes both player development and family engagement.”

Three 14-year-olds are in custody after the alleged hit-and-run in Gunnedah.
NSW Police Western Region commander Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland said police would allege a group of young people committed an aggravated break-and-enter at a home in Moree about 4.25am.
Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland says the ute involved in the crash was pursued several times. (ABC New England North West: Brigitte Murphy)
He alleged they stole the keys to a white utility.
"This utility was pursued around Moree a number of times, with the pursuits being terminated and the vehicle being last seen travelling on the Newell Highway towards Narrabri," he said.
"About two hours later, an experienced highway patrol officer identified this vehicle just outside of Gunnedah, travelling east.
"He pursued this vehicle for a short time with the vehicle reaching excessive speeds."
Assistant Commissioner Holland said as the ute approached the outskirts of town, a motorcyclist came out of a service station and drove into the path of the vehicle.
The motorbike rider, a 42-year-old man from the Narrabri area, could not be revived and died at the scene.
Police spotted the vehicle again on the other side of Gunnedah and pursued it east along the Oxley Highway for 26 kilometres toward the village of Carroll.
Police arrested three teenagers as they left the vehicle.
The teens who police alleged were in the car were arrested and taken to Tamworth Police Station.
Police have established crime scenes at the site of the motorcyclist's death and the utility crash, as well as the break-in at Moree.
They have been using drones and search dogs in that area.
The Kamilaroi Highway remains closed in both directions around the scene where the motorcyclist was struck.
