The Hawks Museum has published a new book that details the origins of the Hawthorn Football Club
titled The Road to Hawthorn – The Origins of the Hawthorn Football Club
The book begins with the first recorded game of football in the Hawthorn district in 1860 and explores the various small football clubs that represented the Hawthorn district up to 1900
It explains the establishment in 1902 of the present-day Hawthorn Football Club
The book marks the formative years in the Metropolitan Junior Football Association years (1902-1913) before graduating to the Victorian Football Association era (1914-1924) and concludes in 1925 when Hawthorn joined the VFL
The book documents the personalities who set Hawthorn on its football journey
and many others who laid the foundations for our great club
magazine montages – many seen for the first time in print
And it revisits forgotten achievements and special moments
including the Hawthorn Trades team winning three premierships from 1902-05; Emma Lord (mother of future club president Geoff Lord) selling brown and gold sprigs of flowers in 1914; the club’s record VFA score of 30.31.211 in round 10
1922 against Prahran; and the club’s first VFL game in 1925
The book is the same size as the museum’s previous publications
with 178 pages that include new stories and illustrations of the Hawthorn Football Club prior to 1925
The book costs $45 (add $15 if postage is required) and is available now in the Hawks Museum

Match: Hawthorn vs Richmond Date: Sunday
Sunday afternoon at the MCG sees old enemies Hawthorn and Richmond set to do battle in the Hawks' centenary match
in a symbolic clash as the Tigers were the Hawks first opponent backs in 1925
the Tigers proved too good for the Hawks in a 39-point result as Donald Don booted for for Richmond
did keep the Tigers goalless during the final term
There's been plenty of water pass under the bridge in the century since that clash
with the Hawks adding 13 premierships to their record – they didn't win their first 'til 1961 as well – while Richmond have won 11 of their 13 flags over the last 100 years
both these teams have been the powerhouse clubs of the last 15 years
winning three flags apiece but whether we'll see a classic in this one remains to be seen
have been better than many expected posting wins over Carlton and Gold Coast so far this season
The problem for the Tigers is consistency as even in their victories
they haven't produced four-quarter efforts
It's when Richmond drops the momentum that other teams have pounced hard and piled on goals and Hawthorn
The problem for Hawthorn is they haven't quite hit their straps either despite posting five wins so far this season
They bounced back from two losses to Port Adelaide (30 points) and Geelong (7 points) with a 50-point victory over winless West Coast last Sunday
but it still didn't feel like a statement performance
they will also be missing Jack Scrimshaw and Karl Amon – both with concussion – along with the suspended Connor Nash and will have to come up against a Richmond outfit that will be hard at it for long periods
especially with Noah Balta back in defence after missing last week with curfew
We still think Hawthorn will be too good here as they look to keep track with the top bracket of teams
but it may not be the walk in the park they would hope for
Hawthorn have won just three of their last 12 clashes with Richmond dating back to 2017
There was also one draw thrown in during 2021 in a Covid match at the MCG without a crowd

FOUR-TIME premiership coach Alastair Clarkson will attend Hawthorn's centenary celebration match against Richmond
The Hawks have invited every player to have played at least one game for the club to Sunday's game celebrating 100 years in the VFL/AFL
That includes North Melbourne coach Clarkson, who parted ways with Hawthorn in July 2021 after coaching the Hawks to premierships in 2008
especially since the club's historic racism saga emerged in 2022
Clarkson, Brisbane premiership-winning mentor Chris Fagan and Jason Burt all strenuously denied any wrongdoing, while an AFL investigation found no adverse findings against the trio in May 2023
Last November, Hawthorn reached a settlement with the affected Indigenous former players involved

confirmed he would be at the MCG on Sunday
a long period of time for a footy club and there's a lot of great people that need to be acknowledged in the history of the Hawthorn footy club
"North are going to have theirs later in the year
"I want to go in particular because I want to pay my respects to John Kennedy snr
who was my first coach here at the North Melbourne footy club
"He was a significant mentor of mine when I came through the coaching path
"He and (Allan) 'Yabby' Jeans were just fantastic for me and in my view
they're the two most revered and decorated figures in the history of the Hawthorn footy club
notwithstanding the marvellous contributions that many players have made too
"I want to go there on Sunday and pay respects to 'Kanga' and 'Yabby' and all the others that have contributed so strongly to the rich history that Hawthorn has been able to create over a 100-year period."
President Andy Gowers had indicated he was unsure whether Clarkson would attend but stressed he was invited
There's 32," Gowers said on Wednesday morning
"I haven't got the up-to-date RSVP list but Alastair is invited
and we're hoping as many as possible can come along."
Hawthorn celebrated the milestone on Wednesday by having 13 players from each of their 13 premierships back at the club
"Days like this remind you why you played for this club and the admiration you have for the players and supporters," Brownlow medallist Robert DiPierdomenico said
Hawthorn's 10-year wait to back up the 2015 flag is the club's second-longest ever premiership drought - reflecting how successful it has been in every generation
But the 'Hollywood Hawks' of 2025 have once again emerged as one of the teams to beat
Fellow great Michael Tuck added: "I hope they can be the next generation to win a couple of them and help our side (win) more premierships than anybody else."

Hawthorn’s centenary celebrations came to life with a special pre-game ceremony featuring four-time All Australian Shane Crawford as well as an address to the past and current players by Mitchell himself

The Hawks then faced Richmond and handled the occasion brilliantly
defeating the Tigers by 65 points - their biggest winning margin in 2025
Adding to the momentous occasion was much-loved forward Jack Gunston kicking his 500th career goal
which Mitchell eluded to in his post-match press conference
The Hawks coach also highlighted the efforts of some of the team’s inclusions as well as some defensive efforts throughout the day
We summarised the key points from Mitchell’s press conference below
I was really pleased that the players were able to continue in the right attitude and I really thought they handled the occasion well
To see the people that were there was quite daunting to be honest
to go straight from this huge emotional understanding of the 100 years and the weight that it carried
I found it quite difficult on a personal level to get back to it
and for them to physically have to do that as well
I thought we handled the event really well
(the player profiles read) ‘who does he play like
There’s only a handful of players who can play the role he does across a generation
You look at how many players his height and build who have kicked a lot of goals and have that position in a team … it’s not a usual position that he plays
and I think he’s really created something in the game
he’ll fit quite comfortably in the group that was here today.”
500 career sausage rolls 🌭 pic.twitter.com/wVYwauZgWG
“I don’t think we have any doubt that they’re both AFL standard
so I’m not surprised that they played well
Selection will continue to be a challenge for us to make sure we keep our best players out there to give ourselves a chance to win every game that we can
I was really pleased that CJ got on the end of a lot of footy today and Finn’s regularly a much better player than his statistics suggest
and that creates a lot of run and outnumbers
Their running power today was really important for the win.”
“I think we gave up a lot of front-half turnovers in the first part of the game
but I was enormously thankful for Tom Barrass to be fair
There were a lot of really big key packs where he was able to either mark it
which was obviously the best case scenario
I was enormously thankful that he was back there
I thought Josh Battle really came into his own
just their running power and their one-on-one game was fantastic
It was a day when we probably held up because of some of the things that we thought could trouble us at different stages
we saw some evidence that we’ve recruited in a way that doesn’t always work
but we are protected a little bit more by fantastic efforts from players whose weapons are built around that type of entry from the opposition.”

Hawthorn midfielder Massimo D’Ambrosio has claimed the Round 8 title of Superhero of the Week for his performance against Richmond at the MCG

took nine marks and managed a game-high 796 metres gained
He also contributed on the scoreboard with two goals and a game-high 11 score involvements

Credit: Michael Willson/AFL Photos/AFL Photos via Getty ImagesMelbourne captain Max Gawn has dismissed the latest trade speculation around Clayton Oliver and expects the star midfielder will to return to the AFL club imminently
Oliver missed the Demons’ win over West Coast last round due to personal reasons
granted temporary leave after what the club described as “a difficult week personally”
Gawn expects the 27-year-old to re-join his teammates when Melbourne resume training on Tuesday in preparation for the clash with Hawthorn at the MCG in round nine

“He’s an elite player who’s on a good pay packet, and those guys are always going to have stories written about them.
“He made a very mature decision to spend the week off this week. It’s been a big first eight weeks (of the season) for him.
“He came to the club and they organised a good situation. He felt like he was getting a bit overwhelmed and just wanted a week off from the club.
“He’ll be in tomorrow and I actually really applaud the mature decision from both the club and Clayton.”
Oliver had a desire to be traded to Geelong at the end of last year, but Melbourne held firm on their contracted four-time best-and-fairest winner.
A Nine report on Sunday night claimed Oliver will again seek an early release from the multi-million dollar deal, which runs to the end of 2030.
Nine’s Tom Morris reports Oliver is “invested” in the Dees and “loves” the club, but would simply prefer a new beginning.
“My understanding is he does want a fresh start again at the end of the year. This conversation will happen at the end of the season, as it has the last two seasons,” Morris said on Footy Furnace.
“Then it will be up to Melbourne how they want to deal with it. It’s nothing against the Demons, it’s just a change of environment and change of scenery he’d prefer. Whether it’s Geelong or somewhere else.”
Gawn said Oliver’s long tern future was not his immediate concern.
“For his future, I could not care,” Gawn said.
“I am literally week-to-week with both the footy club and with Clayton, so all I care about is him getting up for Hawthorn and him doing it with a smile on his face.
“Whatever happens at the end of the year, happens.”
Gawn said the latest Oliver trade speculation won’t be an issue for Melbourne this week as they seek to extend a three-match winning streak.
“I’ve lived with so many of these stories ... some stay, some go,” Gawn said.
“It’s all a beat-up in May because anything can happen in May.
“Let’s say I have made a decision that I want to go next year and to somewhere else, go to Tassie; that could change by August.
“So, the ‘May story’ is just really nothing. I’m going to pretend it hasn’t even been written - nothing to see here - and continue my relationship with Clayton.”
After last Saturday night’s win over West Coast, Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said he hopes Oliver will be in the mix to play against Hawthorn.
But Goodwin stressed Oliver’s wellbeing is “the biggest thing for us” and said the club won’t put any pressure on him to play.

The Box Hill Hawks were made to rue a slow start and wayward finishing late in a first loss of the 2025 season on Saturday night
Box Hill were jumped out of the gates by a well-disciplined and impressive Richmond
who lead by as much as 25-points late in the first term and a game-high 39-points at half-time
The Hawks rallied after half-time to chip away at the deficit and close to within six-points mid-way through the final term
but the combination of a second half return of 4.11 and a number of players nursing assorted injury concerns saw Box Hill fade and
While the raw statistics make for encouraging reading – the Hawks were +13 for total disposals
-4 for marks and all square on 21 scoring shots apiece – as is so often the case it came down to efficiency
it was a four-goal burst between the seven and 19 minute marks of the first term which broke the game open for Richmond and set the foundations for their victory
While Box Hill were able to kick two of the next three goals via Cody Anderson and Jasper Scaife
the team in brown and gold had unquestionably been second best and needed to regroup and recover at the quarter time break
it was Richmond who hit the ground running once play resumed and their reward was the first two goals of the term
Max Ramsden and Ben Cavarra found timely replies shortly thereafter to have the sides back where they started the period
but that was as good as things got in the second quarter for the Hawks
The Tigers kicked the final three majors of the frame in time on to scoot out to a game-high 39-point lead at the main break
take a stranglehold on the match and the four premiership points
Having been second best for much of the first half
Box Hill resumed following the long break on the front foot
Max Ramsden kicked his second of the evening inside a minute
but what followed was equal parts encouraging and frustrating
Despite putting together a quarter which was more of what you’d expect of Zane Littlejohn’s charges
for all the Hawks’ territory and possession
improved work rate and defensive solidarity
the team in brown and gold kicked just 2.4 to their opponent’s 0.1 to trail by 24-points with one to play
Fully confident they could get the job done
the Hawks’ method in the early going of the fourth quarter was excellent – but the execution was slightly off-kilter
In the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the fourth period Box Hill could only manage 1.4
When Sam Butler kicked truly the Hawks were as closed as they’d been in a long while… but having reduced the margin to a single kick via 45 minutes of hard graft it was a blow to concede two decisive goals back the other way
By the time a third arrived it was game over
The Tigers had been too good in both the opening and closing stages of the contest
rode out the period in which they were under the cosh and ran out deserved winners
Ned Reeves was recognised as the Hawks’ best player on the night
taking five marks and dominating his one-on-one battle in the ruck
but his game-high seven clearances and 15 contested possessions underline his impact at the source
he recorded a game-high six score involvements
Skipper Cal Porter was at his reliable best
working hard from first siren to last to aid his team’s cause
His 20 touches were comprised of five clearances
as is to be expected form ‘Ports,’ a lot of gritty work
He was determined to be Box Hill’s second-best player on a challenging evening for all in brown and gold
Bodie Ryan put in a strong showing in a hybrid midfield role
taking on elements of the role left vacant by the recent elevation of Henry Hustwaite and Finn Maginness to the Hawks’ senior outfit
The kid with a flash of Blonde hair returned a game-high 24 touches
looked capable of single-handedly willing his side to victory
Fellow half-back Seamus Mitchell was similarly busy and very much in the thick of things
and laid five tackles in a good performance

POWER v HAWKS Full match coverage and stats
Closing out the 2025 edition of Gather Round
Port Adelaide stunned Hawthorn on the Adelaide Oval deck to run out 18.13 (121) to 14.7 (91) victors in a rare Sunday evening fixture
with both teams no doubt aware of the fog lingering from last year's semi-final fixture
But it was the Power that switched on the high beams first to make a statement on the scoreboard
it did so in each of the first to terms to trail by 59 points at the half
But Sam Mitchell's charges threw off the shackles in the second half to send a scare through the home crowd
as Jack Gunston (six goals) and James Sicily (two goals) started to get the better of defensive duo Aliir Aliir and Esava Ratugolea
as the early damage meant the deficit was simply unsurmountable
four goal assists) was everything Port Adelaide fans have been desperate for this year
his deft touch going forward set up his side's 79-point first half
Meanwhile captain Connor Rozee's (28 disposals
two goals) shift to half back was an effective one
as he exploited Hawthorn's forwards as they were caught ball watching
The Power's ability to flick the ball around congestion to find a teammate on the outside was unperturbed by Hawthorn's attempts to pressure
Consistent work rate and chemistry across the side created such opportunities
and a sense of calm in the face of Hawks numbers
Mitch Georgiades often found himself the beneficiary of that movement higher up the field
As the Hawks' defensive unit was abnormally disorganised
Georgiades enjoyed plenty of space inside 50
and cashed in with three goals and six marks for the game
Hawthorn struggled to find any semblance of control in the opening half
Not on the scoreboard and uncharacteristically
not even with periods of possession with short kicks to uncontested options
Four consecutive goals either side of the main break quietened the packed stands
The Hawks were starved of the opportunity to switch the ball to space on the open side
and were repeatedly lured to take a long option into the corridor
only for someone in teal to chop it off and generate another attacking foray
and it was exactly that which allowed them some genuine looks at goal to open the second half
two goals) were the architects of that midfield fightback
five intercepts) providing support from behind
But outside of their purple patch to open the third quarter
any sense of a challenge from the Hawks came with a lack of surety
the Hawks tried to match the breakneck speed that Port Adelaide established
A picture of experienceWhere Hawthorn struggled to string together dangerous chains of possession and couldn't move the ball effectively into attack
263-gamer Jack Gunston relieved some of the pressure
His combination of intelligence and skill meant that even as the Power's defenders felt like world-beaters
he still broke through for an equal-career high six goals
propping up the Hawks' forward line all night
PORT ADELAIDE 6.3 12.7 14.10 18.13 (121)HAWTHORN 1.2 3.2 7.5 14.7 (91)
INJURIES Port Adelaide: Bergman (left knee)Hawthorn: Nash (left wrist/hand)
SUBSTITUTES Port Adelaide: Joe Berry (replaced Miles Bergman in the third quarter)Hawthorn: Luke Breust (replaced Conor Nash at half time)
Hawthorn has made one change for Sunday night's clash
Hawthorn Coach Sam Mitchell spoke to the media ahead of his side’s clash Easter Monday clash with Geelong at the MCG
Mitchell also spoke on the Dare to Hope match and its importance to the club in support of young forward Calsher Dear
We summarised the key points from Mitchell’s Thursday morning press conference below
“The good thing about AFL footy is you get to play a week later
Obviously we have a little bit longer break
so we’ve still got a bit of water to go under the bridge but certainly close the door on that and learnt some lessons
as evidence has suggested when we work hard on things we can improve and we know we need to improve on what we dished up on Sunday
I think it’s really important that the players know that was a bad performance
and we know there are things that we can do in our game that will ensure that we can play better
I think the players have got a good game understanding
and we still feel like we’re a side in pretty good form
and that’s not going to be competitive against the best sides and that’s what we want to be
so we’ve got some work to do but we understand that
we’ll train again later in the week and get ready for Monday
we brought Dylan up the ground because we brought Luke Breust in
I think the thing with Moorey is he creates energy wherever he goes
So sometimes you just need a spark of energy
We had a good chat yesterday actually about how his strength is just that he tries really hard all the time
because sometimes he’s not playing but I still value him almost just as highly as I did on the weekend
So he kicked goals on the weekend and that’s fantastic
but his influence has been significant even when he’s not kicking goals
I think what he does and the reason he was able to play so well on the weekend is a large part of his role is not just kicking goals
I couldn’t be more rapt with the role that both Jack and Luke Breust is the same
and Sam Frost is a little bit in that boat
their influence on our group and the culture that they create to bring other players along with them is exactly what we want and that’s making other players better
I’m sure he put his head on the pillow feeling pretty good about that one aspect but he shouldn’t feel any differently when it’s not goals that he kicks and it’s just the influence of the field that he’s having.”
I think everyone knows what Geelong are going to produce
their worst is pretty good and their best is elite
They’re a side that if we look at our progression and what we’re trying to achieve
make our way towards where we want to go and there are teams in front of us at the moment and Geelong are certainly one of those and Port Adelaide were one and we couldn’t get that one done but Geelong is another one and that’s another opportunity for us to see how far we’ve come and we know we’ve got progress
we’ve got plenty of work to do but we’ve got another solid test against the Cats
obviously very close to home for Calsher (Dear) and his father passing away recently
But also against Geelong and they had Micky Turner pass away at the end of last year as well
Geelong have really embraced it as an important topic as well and that we can bring a bit of hype around it would be great
And there’s going to be a lot of people at the game and I think most of them will probably get there a little bit early to watch a couple of old legends run around before it and a bit of a way to spread some awareness about the Dare to Hope
to be able to support Calsher is obviously really important
hopefully we’ll get him back on the field soon but making sure that he feels valued by everything we do as a club and being able to support the Dare to Hope is a really important part of our club.”

Hawthorn has made three changes for its highly anticipated Centenary Match on Sunday afternoon at the MCG
Finn Maginness and Changkuoth Jiath have been recalled to Sam Mitchell's side
while Luke Breust comes in for his 304th Hawks game
moving into sixth spot for all-time games played for the club
Following concussions sustained in last round's 50-point win over West Coast
defensive duo Karl Amon and Jack Scrimshaw will be sidelined for the club's Centenary Match
Midfielder Cam Mackenzie will also miss Sunday's game after fracturing his hand at training on Friday morning
The club will have a clearer indication of his return to play timeline next week
Hawthorn Executive General Manager of Football Rob McCartney welcomed Maginness
"Both Finn and Changkuoth went back to the VFL and performed in a manner that saw them quickly recalled to the AFL team when an opportunity presented," McCartney said
"Luke Breust also returns to the team - a player who's experienced the big stage
We think his experience and leadership will be really good for us on game day."

Connor Macdonald sidled up to Garry Young after training on Wednesday and placed his arm around the 85-year-old premiership Hawk’s shoulder
the 22-year-old was discussing family with the only Hawk to both play 100 games in
the No.31 – the number Macdonald has shone in since making his debut in 2022

There was none of the youthful brashness that earned this team “the Hollywood Hawks” nickname on display from Macdonald
This was a conversation based on mutual regard – a face to the name that confronts Macdonald every time he reaches his locker at Waverley Park to train
To the 22-year-old Macdonald
Young’s achievements – and those of the other three Hawthorn players to win a flag in No.31
Greg Madigan (1989) and Stuart Dew (2008) – are a source of inspiration
“He is on 108 [games] and I am on 71 [games] now
It’s awesome to look up there every day and know that a great man like Garry played in a premiership with the club and played a lot of games of footy,” Macdonald said
From across the generations they came to celebrate Hawthorn’s 100 years as a club.Credit: Joe Armao
Young adores the latest member of the No.31 club
and he’ll be delighted if Macdonald can join him on the locker as the second 100-game
He [Macdonald] has a physical presence on the football field
and I’m so proud of him and for him to wear it,” Young said
“He is wearing it with pride and determination
The pair’s informal catch-up was part of a gathering at Waverley on Wednesday that saw a player from each of the Hawks’ 13 premiership teams come together to mark the club’s 100-year anniversary
an occasion to be celebrated at the MCG on Sunday when they play the Tigers – a team they have only played once in a final (in 2018)
Although Sam Mitchell’s team has been happy to challenge conventional wisdom with their flamboyant goal celebrations and post-victory selfies
the players’ attitudes to those who wore their numbers in premierships could only be described as deferential
Jarman Impey talked at length with Peter Russo as Lloyd Meek chatted to Michael Tuck
while Robert DiPierdomenico’s big personality left Changkuoth Jiath with a disbelieving grin – the number on their backs joining them in the same way it connects Young and Macdonald
even though they have only met a couple of times

He’s really supportive of everything since meeting him,” Macdonald said
He was a key forward with a wobbly kick who managed to steer the ball through the goals regularly enough to lead the Hawks’ goalkicking in 1959 and again in 1960 in his first season under John Kennedy snr – his teammate becoming his coach
he had played in Hawthorn’s first premiership – aged just 22 years and 75 days
He was 36 days younger than Macdonald will be on Sunday when the Hawks play Richmond at the MCG in a game that officially celebrates their 100th year in the competition
Young then played in the 1963 grand final loss to Geelong before suffering a perforated bowel in round two
The injury ended his career on 108 games and 164 goals
only nine players having kicked more goals in No.31
“I did not discover that [injury] until I rang Peter Scott
I lost four pints of blood and that was the termination of my career,” Young said
“I was very disappointed because I was in my prime at 24 years old.”
But there were no hard feelings from Young
He received Hawthorn life membership 50 years ago
“Every day is enjoyable and wonderful if we win,” Young said
Making Young’s day enjoyable is part of Macdonald’s plan on Sunday
He is happy to hear advice from Young as to how to fine-tune his game – words of wisdom Young says will remain between him and Macdonald
serve as a reminder that although everything changes
Young claims his “rat pack” included great mates
and the disciplined John McArthur – the adjectives drawn from the Encyclopedia of League Footballers
The trio called Young “the G-man” and it has stuck
Macdonald’s partners in crime include Nick Watson
a nickname earned at school when someone decided he looked like Joel Crocker
the son of North Melbourne premiership player Darren Crocker
The current Hawks might rib each other if one inadvertently copies one of Ja Morant’s celebrations after a goal – or “cellies” as they like to call them – that had been used before
Mates off the field are better teammates on it
Macdonald knows Young was one of the players who laid the foundation for his career
“For us to look back and see how much success they have had
and how strong they were – it only drives us and motivates us to want to get that [too and] be the old boys coming back,” Macdonald said
Another No.31 with a flag and 100 games would be enough

A quartet of the Hawks were recognised by the coaches at the MCG
As Hawthorn celebrates 100 years in the VFL/AFL on Sunday afternoon
young gun Josh Weddle will celebrate bringing up 50 games of his own
The 20-year-old will join a select group of Hawthorn players to have played 50 consecutive games from his first
2023 against Western Bulldogs at Docklands and has played every game since
Despite not tasting victory until his fourth game
he's since chalked up a strike rate of 26 wins and 23 losses
The list which Weddle is set to join is headed by dual premiership defender
who played 74 consecutive games from his Round 1 1976 debut until he got injured in the 1978 second semi final
and was forced to miss the 1978 Grand Final
Others on the list include Ivan McAlpine (67 consecutive games from debut)
Cam McPherson (52) and Stephen Gilham (50)
Lord and Gilham had all previously played for other VFL/ AFL clubs
Speaking to Daniel Harford on RSN Breakfast
Weddle spoke about how his game is progressing ahead of his special milestone
"I think I've found some good consistency over the last few weeks," Weddle said
"Obviously I had a bit of struggles early with marking the footy
but I've found that I'm doing a little better with that
"I'm excited to play 50 games for the club and excited for all the other ones
LISTEN TO JOSH WEDDLE ON RSN!
Weddle's coach Sam Mitchell congratulated the young gun on his milestone.
“It is consecutive, that’s very impressive," Mitchell said.
"When Weds got to the club, you had this great feeling that once he worked out a few things, he was going to be an impressive player for us over the journey.
"His flexibility we’ve started to see and I think it’s going to continue to grow.
"There’s people who play their 50th such as a Finn Maginness a couple of weeks ago who you’re enormously proud of because of the ebs and flows of their career and when someone like Josh Weddle plays their 50th it’s a bit of a pat on the back, good job, get out there and do your thing mate because it has been reasonably smooth sailing for him so far.”

There's a bit of added feeling in Sunday's clash between Richmond and Hawthorn
The highly anticipated Easter Monday clash is just a few days away
Geelong are ready to do battle with Hawthorn at the MCG
Plenty has been made of the history between these two teams
but they have both made a strong start to the 2025 season and currently sit inside the top eight on the ladder
For the Cats it will be a chance to string together three consecutive wins
coming off an impressive Gather Round victory against the Crows at Adelaide Oval
Hawthorn on the other hand were comfortably defeated by Port Adelaide last weekend
but remain in a strong position after winning their opening four games of the year
Check out some of the key stats and figures ahead of the blockbuster Easter Monday clash
Cats champion Stevie J spoke on the infamous rivalry between Geelong and Hawthorn
and how's its translated into a modern day affair
It is no secret that the Hawks enjoy playing a fast brand of football
but what sets them apart from other teams is their ability to do it efficiently each week
A clanger refers to an error made by a player resulting in a negative result for his side
Hawthorn have registered less clangers than their opponent in each of their first five games
The total differential is -59 across their opening five matches
which indicates that they do not turn the ball over on many occasions and are able to execute their ball movement precisely
By comparison the Cats have turned the ball over more than their opponents in three of the first five weeks
an area that will be looking to improve in on Easter Monday
He is not a big accumulator of the football
but Jai Newcombe's impact around stoppage situations is undeniable and will be a particular focus for the Cats with Will Day absent
Through the opening five weeks of the season
Newcombe ranks inside the competition's top 10 players for clearances and contested possessions
while also sitting inside the top 20 for tackles and score involvements
Newcombe also leads Hawthorn for disposals
clearances and contested possessions in 2025
nullifying his impact will go a long way to securing a win on Easter Monday for Geelong
Another area that Hawthorn have excelled in statistically this year is marks inside 50
able to find targets in their forward half which has helped set up the majority of their scoring opportunities
Across the opening five games of their season
Hawthorn have taken more marks inside 50 than four of their opponents with a +33 differential
Port Adelaide were the only team that managed to halve them in this statistic
It has been an even spread for the Hawks too
with Mabior Chol and Jack Gunston (nine marks inside 50) leading the way
followed by James Sicily (seven) and Blake Hardwick (six)

Hawthorn Coach Sam Mitchell spoke to the media on Friday morning ahead of his side’s meeting with Richmond at the MCG on Sunday afternoon
Mitchell spoke on the significance of the occasion
as Hawthorn’s Centenary Match to commemorate 100 years in the VFL/AFL
We summarised the key points from Mitchell’s press conference on Friday morning below
“I think they’re an exciting team and they’ve been really quite consistent through games
they had a little bit of a blowout against Fremantle a couple weeks ago
but in every other game they’ve been in it right til the end and they're hungry and keep their pressure on
There’s a level of excitement about the way the Tigers play that puts bums on seats and that sort of suits us
so there’s a little bit of fire meets fire probably playing against them
they like to play with an attacking flair and a lot of their goals are high energy and they get the crowd involved
I think they certainly seem to me like a lot of young talent in their side that are more than capable at the level already
even with limited experience along with that they’ve got a whole heap of premiership players who give them stability
so we’re certainly not taking them lightly.”
“It’s funny when you play or coach in this game
it’s very rare that you get a moment to reflect
you’re always thinking forward and what’s the next thing
having a chance to look back on the 100 years of the club
a couple days ago we had the cups sitting out here and all the people who had been a part of them
it was quite daunting just the amount of goals
and best and fairest and things that all these players have won and how they shared them together
And for our players to see the camaraderie of those guys that all played together and to see them now is fantastic
And I think the AFL has done a fantastic job of giving us a really good forum in playing against Richmond who we played our first ever game against in 1925 I think it’s a pretty special afternoon and hopefully the brown and gold will turn out
so if I was going and sitting in the stands
staff and presidents and all those things that are coming along and we’ll look to introduce them to the players at different stages
We’ve got a really proud history that our players are well aware of it as part of our induction and how we like to be really proud of our history and what we’ve been able to achieve as a football club and we’ll continue to strive to live up to their expectations which are quite significant
“There’s so many great people from all of the eras
with Clarko (Alistair Clarkson) being a four-time premiership coach
to have him coming along to spend some time with the guys he coached and do that sort of thing
There are so many great people from every era coming along whether that’s players that you know
and Tucky and Ayres and Knights and the list goes on
Whether it’s the coaches or administrators
the Ian Dicker’s and Jeff Kennett’s of the world
I think it’s really fantastic that we’re able to bring our people together
I think there’s close to 200 past players coming along so it’s going to be a pretty special day.”
“He’s been a really important player for us Karl and he hasn’t missed too many games either
losing two out of your back six is a challenge
Jack Scrimshaw and Karl both going out of the side with concussions
we’re excited about the future of this club and the playing list
Box Hill are going really well at the moment
and lots of players that are playing at Box Hill are more than capable at AFL level and some of those will get an opportunity over this next period and that’ll start on Sunday.”
you had this great feeling that once he worked out a few things
he was going to be an impressive player for us over the journey
His flexibility we’ve started to see and I think it’s going to continue to grow
There’s people who play their 50th such as a Finn Maginness a couple of weeks ago who you’re enormously proud of because of the ebs and flows of their career and when someone like Josh Weddle plays their 50th it’s a bit of a pat on the back
get out there and do your thing mate because it has been reasonably smooth sailing for him so far.”
it’s not something we’ve talked about or thought about too much
he hasn’t actually mentioned it to me which is interesting
he’s doing a great job on the field at the moment
and everyone is rightly talking about how important he’s been for us on the field but I still maintain
and have since the day he came back from Brisbane
his great influence is what he does off the field
The amount of coaching that he’s done with our forward group
the way that we’ve been quite good at getting marks inside 50 this year
and Adrian Hickmott has done a fantastic job but I don’t think he’s able to do his job anywhere near as well without a Luke Breust and a Jack Gunston backing him up
I know when Luke Breust kicked his 500th it was quite a big deal so I imagine it’ll be pretty similar for Jack if he can get there at some stage.”

Hawthorn star Nick Watson has been captured on video making obscene gestures at footy fans after he was jeered by spectators during his team's win over Richmond on Sunday
A video uploaded to TikTok shows the Hawks forward giving spectators the middle finger twice and making a masturbation gesture with his hand as he was heckled by spectators during the 65-point win at the MCG
Watson - who is nicknamed 'The Wizard' - also gestured for the fans to keep talking and pointed to the scoreboard in the clip
It's now likely the 20-year-old will become the third AFL star fined over similar offences this season
West Coast Eagles star Harley Reid was fined $1000 by the AFL for directing a middle-finger gesture at Brisbane fans in March
Smith also sparked outrage on Saturday night when he appeared to repeatedly grab his genitalia as he posed for photos with a fan in the dressing room after Geelong's win over Collingwood.
Footy fans slammed Watson's display in comments they made about the TikTok video.
'Imagine how good a player he will be when he hits puberty,' one wrote.
'Tough guy on the other side of the fence with security to save him,' added another.
'@afl should look into this,' wrote a third.
'This was his best highlight all game,' another commented.
Watson kicked three goals and racked up 10 disposals in the win, which lifted the Hawks to third on the ladder.
The match also saw former Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson publicly reunite with the team for the first time since leaving in 2021 and taking the reins at North Melbourne.
Clarkson was one of the dozens of club greats among the 62,321 spectators on hand to see fan favourite Jack Gunston kick his 500th career goal in the Hawks' 16.13 (109) to 6.8 (44) triumph at the MCG on Sunday.
Clarkson figured prominently in the pre-match ceremony, back in brown-and-gold for the day after being estranged from the club since his 2021 exit.
The 57-year-old joined retired greats Luke Hodge and Jordan Lewis, among others, to present the spoils of last decade's three-peat when the Hawks' 13 premiership cups were paraded for the crowd.
Hawks coach Sam Mitchell, who took over from Clarkson in a messy handover, admitted it had been daunting to have so many greats around the club during the build-up, but welcomed back his former mentor.
'He's a four-time premiership coach of the club and hasn't been around for a while, so it's great that he was able to go out and spend some time with the guys that he coached from Hawthorn,' Mitchell said.
'Then on the other side he's coaching an opposition team, so there's always going to be some complexities around that side of things.'
Sunday's scrappy win won't be remembered as fondly as any of those grand final triumphs, but was another box ticked on the path to a possible 14th flag.
The Hawks are 6-2 ahead of a clash with Melbourne in round nine, while Richmond (2-6) will look to bounce back against winless West Coast.
Hawthorn's superior class and dominance at the contest meant they proved far too strong for the Tigers, pulling away after halftime to post their biggest win of the season to date.
Jai Newcombe (27 disposals, five clearances), Massimo D'Ambrosio (30 touches, two goals), Josh Battle (33 disposals, 12 marks) and Tom Barrass all shone, though the Hawks had many contributors.
