South Australia is gearing up for its biggest auction weekend in recent weeks
According to the data provider’s Property Preview Report
179 auctions are set to hit the auction block this weekend – 173 in metro Adelaide and a further 6 in regional South Australia
and comes before the auction scene tapers off in the lead up to the Easter break
163 auctions are scheduled for next weekend
with just 53 set to go under the hammer the following weekend
Salisbury East is the top auction suburb for the weekend
Of all the properties going under the hammer across the nation this weekend
the top two most-viewed can be found in SA – 63 East Tce
63 East Tce sales agent Jae Curtis of Belle Property Henley Beach/Glenelg said interest in the property had been strong
The kitchen with island bench and breakfast bar
“I’ve had probably 80 people through this one in the past few weeks,” he said
which is hard to find and it’s just off of Henley Square so in a perfect location and it’s been very well received
“We’ve had a real collection of buyers – from interstaters to Henley Beach locals
“We hold off our registrations until the morning of the auction but we are expecting quite a few.”
Mr Curtis said he had had a number of people keen to put in offers but have referred them to Satuday’s auction
“I’m pretty sure it should go on the day – you never really know until you turn up but there’s strong interest so I’m thinking it should go well,” he said
The three-bedroom home hits the auction block at 2.30pm Saturday and is being advertised with a price guide of $1.475m

A major redevelopment of Henley Beach Road is in the works
The City of West Torrens Council is planning a major makeover of Henley Beach Road in Adelaide’s west
with visions for a multicultural dining precinct
The goal is to turn the street into a thriving
accessible area that will boost the economy and breathe new life into the heart of West Torrens.Henley Beach Road has long been a central route since the late 1800s when it served as the main connection between the CBD and the coast
but has been recognised by the council as an area in need of improvement
Now that planning is confirmed for the 2.2km northern tunnels from Grange Road to James Congdon Drive
the focus can shift to making the street a more attractive destination
A key part of the redevelopment is improving public transport along Henley Beach Road
While the exact plans are not yet confirmed
the council has identified a need to better connect Henley Beach Road to major areas like the Adelaide Airport
Local businesses and property owners have been actively involved in the planning process
sharing important feedback on how people use the street and where improvements are needed
Their input has been key in shaping the vision for the project
we were heartened at the enthusiasm and passion that they have in wanting to see change along Henley Beach Road,” Mayor Michael Coxon
“What has been proposed so far has been positively received.”
The revamp will also celebrate the area’s history and cultural diversity
reflecting the different communities that have shaped Henley Beach Road
This includes honouring the Kaurna people’s history and the area’s wider multicultural influences
Preserving the road’s character will be a priority
with measures in place to protect its heritage and historic charm
Early feedback from the community and local businesses shows strong support for this approach
there’s a clear opportunity to improve the streetscape
An example of this approach is the current upgrade of Thebarton Theatre
a State heritage-listed building undergoing renovations that respect its historical significance while adding modern amenities for the future
The transformation of Henley Beach Road will bring many benefits to the local community
By focusing on both residential and commercial development
the council hopes to turn Henley Beach Road into a “central point where people will be able to meet
do business and live,” Mayor Michael Coxon says
“This is a very complex project which will be undertaken in stages and phases,” Mayor Coxon says
and that the revitalisation is what our community expects
we will undertake pilot projects and investigations that our community will be able to provide feedback on.”
The West Torrens Council’s vision to turn Henley Beach Road into an exciting
and inclusive space for the community is an exciting proposition
While the project is still in its early stages
the goal is clear: to create a Henley Beach Road that has modern amenities while celebrating decades of cultural history

Haigh Mansions is part of our state heritage
Haigh Mansions has always been a quiet beauty
she is the kind of building people notice without really knowing why
Locals and visitors alike pass her every day
and the way she holds herself against the sea breeze
yet most have little idea of the story behind her walls
with her recent addition to the State Heritage Register
Haigh Mansions is finally stepping into the spotlight
the man behind South Australia’s much-loved Haigh’s Chocolates
He bought one of the last vacant blocks along the Henley Beach Esplanade
The story goes that Henley Beach was chosen over Somerton Park on the toss of a coin
though the nearby railway line into the city probably helped seal the deal
Alongside the eight flats that made up Haigh Mansions
Haigh also built a five-roomed bungalow next door
he added a few private bathing houses right on the beach in front of the flats
giving residents their own little slice of seaside luxury
At a time when Adelaide’s middle-class suburbs were filled with traditional cottages and bungalows
but purpose-built ones — designed from the ground up for a new way of living
It was a bold move that made quiet waves in Adelaide at the time
These flats were more than just seaside housing
Haigh Mansions offered a modern and rather luxurious lifestyle
one that suggested there was another way to live — without endless lawn mowing or costly stone and weatherboard repairs
The building had two elegant wings with a garden in between
external staircases that were daring for the era
and verandahs that caught the sun and sea breeze just so
it was a glimpse of something fresh — a small slice of coastal modernity when most people were still holding onto the past
becoming the earliest surviving example of purpose-built flats in South Australia
As flat living became part of everyday life
Haigh Mansions remained a reminder that this wasn’t just a trend — it had roots
planted right here on the Henley Esplanade
The building’s heritage listing now secures her place as part of Adelaide’s story
though the symmetrical design and signature staircases are certainly worth admiring
Haigh Mansions marked a shift — a moment when people began looking at how they could live differently: more simply
and with the beach almost on their doorstep
perhaps on a quiet evening stroll or during a sunny weekend
Haigh Mansions carries the ambition and charm of a time when Adelaide dared to try something new
she will keep telling that story for generations to come

A massive 'crater' has appeared on Henley Beach with little communication according to an MP for the beachside electorate of Coulton.
The crater is approximately 20-30 metres wide, part of a process to flush blue-green algae from Lake Torrens.
MP Matt Cowdrey told Sonya Feldhoff, "It's rather more brutalistic, and probably bigger, than I remember it being year-to-year".

Change is inevitable in the hospitality world
it’s about making the right moves to keep delivering the exceptional dining experiences their community loves
In a statement they provided to Glam Adelaide they have said
After much reflection, we have made the decision to close our third venue Santi’s
and simply being stretched too thin has led us to this moment
we’re not slowing down – we’re sharpening our focus and doubling down on what we do best
Alimentary Eatery and The Alchemists Kitchen our two first babies at Brighton are our heart and soul
We’re putting everything we’ve got into making them better than ever
This isn’t a setback—it’s a strategic move to ensure we can keep delivering the exceptional food
and experience that our incredible community deserve
To everyone who supported us at our third venue
We’re taking that energy with us as we level up our two Brighton venues and we can’t wait to welcome you with fresh ideas and even more passion
Big love to the customer base that have supported us for the last 6 years
You are all part of what keeps us in business and pushes both of us to strive harder than ever to execute all the ideas we have
The loyalty and love has given us the ability to continue doing what we love and to keep our two doors open
See you soon down South!Cheers Deeb and Andrea Milky
the focus is now on enhancing the two thriving venues that Brighton locals know and love
remains a hotspot for its handcrafted pizzas
the venue continues to be a destination for those seeking incredible food and an unforgettable atmosphere
“Our pizzas have become a favourite in the community
and we’re excited to continue serving them with the same quality and flavour that our customers love,” said Andrea
She reiterates that one of the biggest challenges they’ve faced in recent years has been staff shortages
which ultimately led to the closure of Santi’s
“The reality is that hospitality is seeing a decline in interest
making it increasingly difficult to sustain multiple venues while delivering the standard we strive for
South Australia’s hospitality scene is incredibly diverse—for a city of our size
we would rate it on par with Melbourne and Sydney
The biggest challenge we face as a state is the perception that people need to travel interstate for a great experience
SA is thriving and only getting better,” said Andrea
by focusing on our two wildly successful venues
Exciting changes are underway at Alimentary Eatery
We’re delighted to welcome our new head chef
who is bringing fresh creativity and expertise to our kitchen
and the much-anticipated return of Alimentary Nights
We’re also excited to welcome a new head chef at The Alchemists’ Kitchen
who is set to take the venue to new heights
redefining flavours and setting a new standard for excellence.”
Alimentary Eatery remains the go-to spot for vibrant brunches
The name “Alimentary” is proudly worn on staff shirts
symbolising its dedication to nourishment and quality—something that will only be further elevated in the coming months
“We’ve always believed that food should not only taste amazing but make people feel good too
That’s the philosophy behind Alimentary Eatery
and it’s something we’re more committed to than ever.”
with their full focus on these two beloved Brighton venues
Deeb and Andrea are more committed than ever to creating fresh experiences
and delivering the exceptional hospitality that has built their loyal following over the past six years
“This isn’t just about keeping our doors open – it’s about continually pushing boundaries
and giving our customers something truly special every time they visit.”
This is not the end – this is a transformative new beginning
and be part of the exciting next chapter at Alimentary Eatery and The Alchemists’ Kitchen
Andrea expresses her gratitude to the loyal community that has continued to support their journey:
“Supporting local businesses has never been more important and I can’t thank our regulars enough for their continued loyalty
and we feel truly blessed to be part of such a strong and passionate community here in Brighton
We’re excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait to welcome you in soon.”

and then we expanded into Goodwood the following year and a year ago we opened a studio in Henley,” shared owner Harrison
We started ‘Loverboy’ when we were younger

When Covid hit we couldn’t open the club
“We also own ‘Nauti Buoy’ the cafe in Henley
so we always wanted to figure out a way that we could combine the two together
We know that pilates is a luxury for a lot of people
and we understand that not everyone can afford it
but we think that everyone deserves to have a chance to feel their best
so we saw this as an opportunity to give back to the community.”

If you’re planning a swim at Henley Beach anytime soon
there’s a temporary safety alert you should know about
All Images: Visit Henley Beach
many South Aussies will be flocking to Henley Beach for a perfect day by the water
South Australia’s Infrastructure and Transport team has installed buoys to mark a section of the beach where exposed pipes
believed to be remnants of the old Henley Swimming Pool
While the issue is expected to be fixed soon
swimmers are advised to stay clear of the area
This discovery raises an interesting question and an even more fascinating story – who remembers the old Henley Swimming Pool
or for most people who were too young to have experienced it
some remnants of this historic structure can still be seen peeking above the water
The Henley & Grange Historical Society has dug into the history of the pool
originally built as a private venture right on the foreshore
It was a popular spot for competitive swimming
with eight lanes and a depth of 4.8 meters at its northern end
The pool also had a 3-meter and a 10-meter diving tower
Among the many famous faces to train at Henley was Australian swimming legend
She used the pool to prepare for the 1956 Olympic Games
putting Henley Beach firmly on the map in Australian swimming history
The pool’s life wasn’t without its challenges
Severe storms and rough seas often took their toll
the pool eventually closed for good and was demolished in 1985
especially as the home of the Henley and Grange Swimming Club
The club has kept the tradition alive with the annual swim from Henley to Grange Jetty
a historic event that’s been happening since 1917
If you’re heading down to Henley Beach for a swim anytime soon
make sure to stay mindful of the marked areas and follow the safety alerts
This way you can keep making summer memories
just like the swimmers who enjoyed the Henley Pool decades ago

Dr. Mario Mongiardini from the University of Adelaide's Centre for Automotive Safety Research said to Sonya, Jules & Roving Reporter, Troy Sincock, "The idea is to make them three dimensional so that we can attract people's attention".

Gilbert’s Wine Bar & Grill will open soon on Henley Beach Road
with a mix of all the brand’s offerings in one venue
Gilbert’s Wine Bar & Grill is the latest offering from co-owners Wilson and Isabelle Shawyer
It will be the “perfect amalgamation” of Good Gilbert
“So we’ll have the best of GG’s [Good Gilbert] in regards to that really fun
“But then further developing the food offering that we’ve done at Good Burger to be more restaurant-focused and more American grill-focused
“And then with a fit-out like Asha without all the hardwood
It’s going to feel very modern in here in a really nice way.”
The walls are painted in the colour ‘Boston Ivy’
There is one notable difference with Gilbert’s Wine Bar & Grill compared to the rest of the hospitality offerings: this one is in the western suburbs
My first business [Burgertec on Grange Road] was in the west
so it was all I knew for a while and it was always really
“Then I moved around the corner to Good Gilbert [and] was a regular in the bar
That’s how I started to get more and more involved with these guys
“I think we only ever see the world from whatever perspective we see it from
From where I saw it then was there was nothing really out here with the offering that was GG’s
Stephen says he saw something greater for the venue
Burgertec always had a large takeaway focus
whereas this is a 60-seater licensed restaurant in a precinct of restaurants,” he says
and the business could stand on its own two feet
but it was definitely a takeaway brand and so it’s very hard to have one of seven [change to] a dine-in restaurant with a license – it’s very hard to recreate your identity in one location
“So I would just be looking at this space being like
Though Gilbert’s Wine Bar & Grill went through four different concepts – including a sports bar and a Good Burger 2.0 – the team settled on something “accessible” where patrons can come for a meal
the offering [that’s] based on the clientele in the area,” Stephen says
what other offerings there are in the area.”
Subscribe for updatesThey’ve made deliberate decisions to cater to this area
like opening seven days for lunch and dinner and having food that is
while also offering other proteins like fish
“Chopped salads and things – again leaning into that American food culture but playing into the area
It can’t be such a heavy food menu as well
We still want it to be approachable and accessible as a lunchtime venue,” Wilson says
A selection of Good Burger’s menu will operate separately as ‘Good Burger at Gilbert’s’
“So we’re going to have our Good Burger menu available online and we’re going to have Uber Eats and run Good Burger independently through the space,” Stephen says
“We had a burger offering in this space for the last eight or nine years
so we don’t necessarily want to take that away and have people bang on the doors saying ‘give us burgers’.”
“And then we’ll have the grill and snack offering within the four walls.”
The team “want this to be a drinking destination” as well as a food hangout
and will have a 200 to 300 bottle list with a large sparkling offering
“We’re booze people at heart,” Wilson says
We ask the crew if they feel like they’ve nailed the opening process after three in one year
“We’re getting more efficient at it in regards to just being more aware of what also needs to be done during fit-out and just being more on the front foot with it,” Wilson says
Gilbert’s Wine & Grill is located at 172 Henley Beach Road
Torrensville and is slated to open in mid-November

On Triple M Breakfast with Roo, Ditts and Loz, Ditts revealed a rumour that has got locals talking. There is a strong push to block off Seaview Road in Henley Square, a move that could significantly change the area’s atmosphere.
Why Are Locals Pushing for the Change?Henley Square is a favourite spot for many in Adelaide, including Ditts himself. He shared his love for the area, saying:
“I love Henley Square. All of the restaurants are nice. I like all of them down there. We rotate through them over the journey, but just, like going there. Beautiful beach. Outside at the Ramsgate right now on a hot night, it’s a beautiful place to sit and look at the water.”
However, there is one major issue that many regulars agree on – the noise pollution from loud vehicles.
One of the biggest complaints from locals and visitors is hoon driving, particularly excessively loud motorbikes and cars revving their engines along Seaview Road.
“There was a bit of a dampener, hoon driving. And I’m talking motorbikes that are so loud and they just drown you out. They just deliberately rev their engines so loud that you can’t even hear yourself.”
This isn’t just a minor inconvenience—it’s an issue that’s affecting the liveability and enjoyment of Henley Square.
Ditts shared that a local resident approached him during his visit, expressing frustration over the noise. She revealed she has started a petition to block off Seaview Road and has already spoken to many residents, business owners, and neighbours who support the idea.
This move could help create a more pedestrian-friendly space, reduce noise pollution, and enhance the Henley Square experience.
If the City of Charles Sturt were to move forward with this proposal, there are a few possibilities:
This rumour is already sparking debate among locals. Some believe it could significantly improve the area’s appeal, while others may have concerns about access and parking.
What do you think? Should Seaview Road be closed permanently, just on weekends, or not at all? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

The owners of the popular ‘Alimentary Eatery’ and ‘The Alchemist’s Kitchen’ are back again with a new business venture in the works – a café in Henley Square called ‘Santi’s’
The menu will feature signature pizzas with a twist and a refined à la carte brunch
Owner Deeb Miky shares the inspiration behind the new café
“We are thrilled to be opening up Santi’s
When the opportunity for a third venue arose
we wanted to incorporate our existing two venues into the third and came to the conclusion it was like a third child to us – Santiago.”
“For anyone who has read the book The Alchemist
you will know Santiago is a little boy on his personal journey and the main character of the book,” he continued
Santi’s is situated on prime real estate
nestled between Bottega Gelateria and Zambrero on the ever-busy Seaview Road
The café is set to become a summertime staple for locals to grab a quick bite or a juice to go
or the place to fill up after a day at the beach
Inspired by The Alchemist’s Kitchen’s pizza and Alimentary Eatery’s coffee window
Santi’s design combines functionality and aesthetics
The venue maximises space with the front quarter of the area dedicated to takeaway orders
while the remainder will offer an à la carte dining experience
The indoor area will accommodate around 30 people
with an internal and external courtyard catering to a further 20 people
“We have a really good relationship with our landlord and when this location became available
he came straight to us – it was more a case of the location finding us and the rest falling into place,” Deeb said
“Our vision for Santi’s is to become a home for locals where they can have brunch
The couple is currently project-managing the build themselves and aiming to officially open their doors by mid-August
they plan to continue adding to the space and hope to create a beautifully curated environment that can be hired out for evening functions such as birthdays or baby showers
kiosk and barbecue area are part of a new $2.9m public square now open on the Adelaide coast
The Square at West Beach Park – located on the coastal path between Glenelg and Henley Beach - is designed to support community events
such as artisan markets and food festivals
which has transformed empty land into a new beachside hub nestled among the foreshore and natural vegetation
including story poles and the sculpture of a blue-ringed octopus (Paitya Marawiti) by Kaurna/Ngarrindjeri artist Allan Sumner
The space is open to the public in time for the summer holidays and will provide an opportunity for community events to be held at the popular beachside location
West Beach Parks had 720,000 visitors to the precinct
sporting and accommodation activities and facilities
The Square has been developed and funded by West Beach Parks
supported by a $1.45m State Government grant from the Planning and Development Fund
West Beach Parks CEO Kate Anderson said The Square was designed to be the heart of the West Beach Parks precinct
"It is a unique community-focused space that not only gathers people together in nature but also links them to the many recreational
community and sporting facilities within our precinct that support healthy living," Ms Anderson said

The duo behind Alimentary Eatery and The Alchemists’ Kitchen are bringing pizzas and brunch to the beach
A beachside locale has always been the first preference for Andrea Aranibar-Milky and Deeb Milky
The pair opened Brighton Jetty Road café Alimentary Eatery in 2018, then The Alchemists’ Kitchen just down the road in 2021
the pair will open their third hospitality venture
in Henley Square after a landlord fortunately fumbled on a space with “a lot of potential”
I didn’t even think we wanted a third venue at this point
“[The landlord and I] had been in contact for a couple of years and he always offers me venues and I’m like ‘Oh
So I said ‘I want a place in Henley’,” Deeb continues
Andrea and Deeb were attracted to the area as it shares similar qualities to their comfortable Brighton spaces like relying on regular locals
Andrea and Deeb have particular tactics in play to combat the seasonality
I’m trying to work on my winter trade because that’s your weak spot essentially,” Deeb says
you put some money aside to get through and then it’s just combatting the seasonality
you expect it and you plan for it in your head already
As Santi’s is located between Bottega Gelateria and Zambrero
the pair know they will “need a point of difference” to stand out among the long lines with fear of people “[not being able to] see the shop”
“It’s situated in a spot where there’s a lot of high foot traffic and the footpath’s very narrow
So I wanted to figure out a way on how to make it most effective for the strip — so it’s going to be a dual concept of takeaway and dine in,” Deeb says
we’re going to cut it out and recess that back into the venue where people can walk in
and walk out instead of blocking up the footpath
“We’re going to have a little coffee window [and] snack window and then on the opposite side
they’re going to walk in and have an à la carte menu as well.”
Outside the window will be takeaway “gourmet” pizzas on fresh focaccia bread along with coffee and juices
Subscribe for updates“It’s called pizza al taglio
“We’re going to be using not just Italian flavours
so we’ll probably infuse some of those flavours into the dishes as well as Italian
“My theory behind it was the next evolution of the sando
You’ve got the sando where everything’s in the middle
but we’re going to take off the top of that.”
Although the breakfast menu — that will be served as a sit-down option inside — hasn’t been finalised
Deeb admits “it’s hard to reinvent the wheel with brunch”
“My theory with brunch is people don’t want to try anything too different
they want their brekky staples that they feel comfortable eating
“So we’ll probably hit the staples with a twist in how we make them [like] what kind of bread we use.”
The interiors will be emerald green and lilac
light and vibrant with two outdoor courtyards
the pair have created a fictional universe throughout their three hospitality ventures
“We created a fictional character and we made a nickname — so Santi’s,” Andrea says
“So our second venue is called The Alchemists’ Kitchen
It’s loosely based on a book called The Alchemist and the main character from that book is Santiago
“We thought we have Alimentary Eatery and The Alchemists’ Kitchen
and the baby of those two venues is Santi’s

Always wanted to swim in ocean without worrying about waves
That's the magic of an ocean pool - natural seawater
Adelaide once had its own ocean pool at Henley Beach
built in the 1930s and removed in the 1990s
you'll need to head to regional South Australia
where several remain—many with BBQ and picnic facilities
Here are eight of SA’s ocean pools and where to find them:
This tidal pool is located on the southern side of the Edithburgh jetty
a 3-hour drive from Adelaide on the Yorke Peninsula
It was originally built for men and there was another tidal pool for women
a picnic area and toilets are available there too
Located on Kangaroo Island on the Kingscote foreshore near the wharf
this 50m tidal pool is a great spot to relax and enjoy the view
On a clear day you can even see across to the mainland
Surrounding the pool are BBQ and picnic facilities as well as walking paths
Moonta Bay is a popular holiday town about a 2-hour drive from Adelaide on the Yorke Peninsula
A netted seawater pool is located just off the side of the long L-shaped jetty
perfect for swimming in the crystal clear water
about a 7-hour drive from Adelaide on the West Coast of the Eyre Peninsula near Ceduna
located at the end of the iconic 300m Streaky Bay jetty
the pool is sectioned off with a shark-proof swimming enclosure
The enclosure was built following shark sightings and a 9ft (2.74m) shark caught off the jetty in 1936
The enclosure is surrounded by strong ultracore netting and can be accessed via a walkway alongside the Ceduna jetty
Smoky Bay is a relaxed seaside town 40km south of Ceduna
There is a shark-proof swimming enclosure attached to the Smoky Bay jetty
Boats can also be launched from the concrete ramp
The pool opened in 2014 and has a 2-metre-wide platform around the perimeter with strong netting
about a 9-hour drive from Adelaide on the Nullarbor Plain is an idyllic little cove with a jetty and netted enclosure for swimming
where surfers from all over Australia congregate to test their skills

Sand has been managed on Adelaide’s beaches for nearly 50 years
Here’s why it’s needed to maintain our coast
Adelaide’s beaches are a significant part of the lives of many South Australians
so it is important to protect the coastline and make sure it can be enjoyed by everybody
The coastline plays a key role in protecting Adelaide from the effects of rising sea levels and extreme storms and the various dune systems also play an important role in conserving biodiversity
Sand has been moved around Adelaide’s beaches for 50 years
This is because the coastline is one connected beach system
with sand naturally moving north due to a combination of wind and wave activity
This causes erosion on our central and southern beaches
and results in sand building up on Adelaide’s northern beaches
The natural sand drift means recycling sand in Adelaide’s beach system and adding sand from external sources is vital to avoid some of our much-loved coastline eroding to rock and clay
Quarry sand is also trucked onto West Beach to help restore the beach’s dune system
protect infrastructure and improve amenity at central beaches
including Henley Beach South and Henley Beach
to support the coastal communities and businesses
Why can’t Adelaide’s coastline just be left alone
houses and other infrastructure were built along the foreshore in the early 1900s
before it was commonly understood that Adelaide’s sand naturally moved south to north
causing the ongoing erosion of the southern beaches
Maintaining a stable coastline by recycling sand allows us to enjoy sandy beaches
as well as saving South Australians from the costs of damaged assets and infrastructure
This imported sand was a necessary top-up to counteract sand losses from the beach system and the impacts of rising sea levels
A top-up every now and again keeps Adelaide’s long beach system healthy
Importing external sand can be challenging
It’s a scarce resource and has significant costs
This means we have to carefully manage the sand we have
and continue to recycle it within Adelaide’s beach system
Independent Adelaide Beach Management Review
The state government commissioned an independent review into the management of Adelaide’s beaches to ensure a long-term solution could be found
Works to replenish West Beach with additional quarry sand will commence on Monday (July 29) in line with the recommendations of the Independent Adelaide Beach Management Review
Trucks will access the beach via the Adelaide Sailing Club and deliver the sand between there and an area just north of the West Beach Surf Club
The works will occur between 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday
The public will have access to the beach while the works occur but people should take care during works and comply with safety signage
public holidays and during school holidays
The trial aims to dredge up to 90,000 cubic metres (m3) of sand from a nearshore zone between Taperoo and North Haven and deliver it south by barge to West Beach
where it will be placed near the shoreline using different options
It aims to confirm if dredging can be used as a long-term
sustainable solution to recycling sand within the beach system
The dredging trial would be expected to run for about 8 weeks and be completed by early November 2024
Sand movement works on Adelaide’s beaches are undertaken by a contractor on behalf of the department
The Department for Environment and Water and its contractors take safety very seriously and measures are always in place to protect the public and animals
Trucks on the beaches must stop within 10 metres of any person or animal
trucks have a speed limit of 25km/h between 10 metres and 50 metres of any person or animal
When no people or animals are within 50 metres
Sand is transferred from Glenelg to Kingston Park via 7 kilometres of underground pipeline
Sand is scraped from the beach surface in thin layers using a land plane and brought to a temporary fenced work area where it is screened to remove stones
Then it is mixed with seawater before being pumped south through the pipelines to the southern beaches
It is then discharged at the back of the beach
at the toe of the dune or the base of seawalls
The sand settles out from the seawater forming a low
wide stable mound and the excess seawater returns to the sea
When sand has built up at one discharge location
the sand and seawater mixture is redirected to another discharge location
and the wind and waves slowly moves the sand northwards (known as littoral or longshore drift)
This keeps our beaches sandy and provides foreshore protection
breakwaters and seawalls can be used where appropriate to help trap sand and protect infrastructure
Groynes are structures built across a beach
Small groynes are useful for raising beach levels on a small scale
are visually unappealing and can cause the coast on the northern side of the structure to become starved of sand
