he received $80,000 was arrested and charged with a Class 2 felony count of Arson and six Class 3 felony counts of Intimidation following the incidents that took place over one week from April 28 and May 2 He is also charged with a Class 4 felony count of phone harassment Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney Manuel Mandujano said in a weekend court appearance Sunday that the three Highland Park victims and family members awoke at 3:26 a.m on April 28 to find their garbage can engulfed in flames on their property Paint supplies and other flammable substances had been placed in the garbage can before the fire was set causing a portion of the lawn and the garbage receptacle to be destroyed the first victim received a text message from an unknown person who said he was part of the group that torched the garbage and they would take the daughter and second victim hostage if the victims did not give the group $80,000 the second victim and daughter named in the threat received the same text about the fire and the abduction but the text added that the next fire would be set inside the home Highland Park Police traced the text messages back to the cell phone provider which then traced back to an IP address for the wifi at the Highland Park Library Surveillance video viewed by police showed Aragon entering the Highland Park Library three times in the moments before each text message was sent to the victims and the Highland Park man confessed to starting the garbage can fire and threatening the victims The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a motion to detain Aragon until hipster enclave the sandwiches on sale demonstrate its evolution From lip-smacking pastrami Reubens to vegan tortas and old-school Italian sandwiches … it's hard to pick a favorite it creates the perfect conditions for a slew of sandwich spots that combine novel experimentation with old-time tradition Initially a landing spot for 19th-century Italian immigrants the neighborhood later became predominantly Latino before evolving into today's hipster hot spot All those influences can still be felt in eateries along Fig and York I used to live there and still have an affection for the area And I have my favorites to head to for a great sandwich when I’m hungry and nearby And while you can indulge in something creative like the Kold Kimcheezy (comprising smoked ham we opted for Jeff’s Special — a meticulously crafted reuben famous for its fall-apart house-made pastrami and a crunchy gruyère crisp tucked away amidst the tried-and-true combo of sauerkraut and Russian dressing It's pure decadence between two slices of griddle rye It's packed with a breaded patty made from soy protein and topped with beans but I was surprised at how much of a light bite it was with the flavors Italy are famously austere not unlike the iconic “The Sandwich” at Roma Market in Pasadena There are even more sandwiches to try in Highland Park that are beyond our list Here are a few other spots that are worth the stop: The menu celebrates the cuisine of Mexico City or “Distrito Federal,” like their pambazo Luca and I split ours while sitting at one of their many sidewalk tables The saturated perfectly crisp sliver of fried salmon skin that gives the sandwich its unique texture It turns out that pumpernickel isn’t just the best choice for Belle’s iconic lox-laced sandwich — it may be the date a 56-year-old expression presented in a bespoke case inspired by the 5,000-year-old Standing Stones of Stenness The 56 year old has been specially selected from an extraordinary parcel of ten casks that were discovered by Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion in 2008 Despite the whisky’s extraordinary age the distinctive notes of sweet smokiness from Orkney’s heather peat has remained prominent alongside a delicate character from the original re-fill casks Motion took the decision to elevate the 1968 casks by combining them in five new first fill casks to create an exceptional complexity Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion details the journey of ten special 1968 casks that were combined to create this rare expression “I like to use the analogy of a tree when talking about the history of the casks for the Highland Park 56 Year Old,” explained Gordon Motion over an email with me but a much smaller number of main roots secure the trunk to the ground These main roots relate to the 10 casks chosen back in 2008 The trunk of the tree represents the bringing together of these 5 casks and the progress they took over the following years gradually going their different directions Rudak worked with Highland Park for the 54 year old release from the same parcel The Stenness Stones were originally built around 5,400 years ago which makes this one of the oldest henges in the UK the henge is a poignant inspiration that reflects many characteristics of the 56 year old whisky itself Glass designer Michael Rudak and craftsman John Galvin draw inspiration from Orkney's ancient standing stones for the whisky's striking presentation then the 56 Year Old should symbolise growth,” Rudak explained over an email with me to discuss his latest project with Highland Park “We were inspired by how man first began to touch and shape the land utilising its natural materials to create something harmonious from something wild “The Standing Stones are arguably the most prominent and everlasting fingerprint of man on the island and I love how they evoke a sense of strength and rawness from every angle but at the same time they’ve been placed so considerately to evoke a sense of welcoming and unity The stones reminded me about one of my favourite things about the distillery—it has been built organically over time as and when needed The case to protect and display both bottle and whisky was the work of Master crafter John Galvin Galvin created a bespoke wooden box that seems to flow around and envelope the glass bottle in a very organic manner I really enjoyed discovering how we can communicate a single concept across two different elements in slightly different ways to create one harmonious product,” added Rudak glass and whisky creates a sleek and modern design that is striking enough to be fitting for what is to be Highland Park’s oldest whisky to date and another step toward premiumisation for the Orkney brand In 2024 we were introduced to Highland Park’s new branding and the presentation of the 56 year old echos the themes we saw in the updated styling There is still wild and rugged Orkney at the heart but the themes are more subtly organic—rather than the dramatic viking themes of earlier branding Overall it's got a more sophisticated feel Highland Park's strategic move towards premium releases reflects industry trends while maintaining its distinctive Orkney character through heather-peat influence The move toward premiumisation at Highland Park is not surprising However for Highland Park this path was started in part back in 2008 when Motion chose ten casks to take to the next level At that time fifty year old whisky was still a novelty In today’s scotch industry you could argue fifty is the bare minimum to call yourself premium Age alone is not enough to stand out today a connection with the purchaser that speaks of the exceptional It is that story—that spark—that the parent company behind Highland Park is well versed in finding “The fact that the whisky had spent 40 years in refill casks means that it has maintained a very delicate These last 16 years in a first fill American oak ex-Sherry cask have delivered intensely perfumed jasmine and lilac notes with sweet raisins and cloudy honey aroma balanced with a hint of pink grapefruit his passion for the whisky he has crafted shining through his descriptions “The flavour is rich and complex with hints of citrus mixing with a slightly smoky almost lapsang souchong tea character The after taste is one of intense woody spices For Highland Park’s oldest whisky to date it is the perseverance of the core sweet smokeyness that makes it stand above its peers 56 years old is an extraordinary age for peated whisky—which is usually renowned for tending to lose its smoke flavours over long maturation We don’t tend to talk about terroir often with whisky—that tendency for the locality to shape the flavour of a local whisky—but for Highland Park their local peat is a defining characteristic That is because in Orkney the peat is predominantly heather which creates distinctive sweet smokey notes compared to the peat found in the highlands and different again to that of Islay Perhaps it is the compounds from the heather smoke that survives and develops better through a long maturation Or perhaps it is the exceptional nature of these particular casks Personally I’m a fan of the more “quiet” side of luxury branding and so I enjoy Highland Park’s more minimalistic new look This latest release is a good balance of that alongside the more in depth stories you need to weave to give customers that connection that drives them to want to own a historic bottle Just 170 bottles of Highland Park 56 have been created They will be available from select retailers from 22nd January 2025 at $50,000 (£40,000) HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – A man has been charged with 11 felonies after a hit-and-run in Highland Park. The revamped Icónica Collection is rolling out globally to retail restaurants and hotels in the run up to the holidays and should be widely available globally from early next year but has yet to enter the travel retail channel but the brand is now putting extra focus on Spain While Pernod Ricard is buoying rum with Icónica Edrington is doing something somewhat similar with one of its key single malts—Highland Park And the travel retail channel will be key to exposing it Highland Park's makeover is designed to attract new A company spokesperson said: “This is a total repositioning of the brand That Nordic connection will always be there but going down the Viking route was quite one-dimensional and we really wanted to appeal to a broader audience.” The new target is the affluent Millennial as much as whisky connoisseurs with 25- to 35-year-olds as the sweet spot told me: “Our existing consumers are getting older and we need to appeal to younger demographics One way of doing that is talking the language that they respect and respond to: our provenance In retail environments we can really talk to that provenance and bring the brand to life.” A more contemporary look will roll out across the brand’s 14- and 18-year-old travel-retail exclusive whiskies from early 2025 though domestic markets are seeing products with age ranges at 12- Taking its cues from the contrasts in the rugged Orcadian landscapes and the warming waters of the Gulf Stream for the younger travel retail expressions the new look will redefine the centuries-old distillery believed to be a hike on the existing liquids as the format is reducing from one liter to 700ml The first locations to get the range will be the brand’s top 25 airports led by San Francisco The range retains the elements that distinguish Highland Park; peat infused with floral heather rather than woody roots (because trees find it difficult to grow in Orkney’s winds) and long aging thanks to a temperate climate (enabled by the Gulf Stream) said: “It’s Orkney’s heathered peat that gives us our subtly smoky flavor and it’s as unique as the place it’s made we have a great opportunity to celebrate a new look while continuing to share the distinctive whisky we’re famed for.” Paul Condron added that the new design would put the unique flavor of the heathered peat “front and center.” The packaging design should appeal to both sexes as the color palette in what is quite a radical makeover is fresher and brighter a total contrast to the black shades of the Viking past The outer features strata patterns reflecting the wind-beaten landscape while the non-colored shade of the liquid inside is highlighted using an updated bottle shape one of Scotland’s oldest whisky distilleries The whisky with a distillation date going all the way back to 1968 identified as having both ‘exceptional complexity and vibrancy’ After refilling them into first-fill sherry-seasoned casks to give them an additional depth of flavour the whiskies have gone on to produce some of the oldest and rarest whiskies the distillery has released so far The latest release is drawn from one of these particular casks and its contents have never been bottled before ‘Our rarest and oldest whiskies are the ultimate expression of Highland Park’s craft,’ said Motion I broadly know what I’ll get from each one The second maturation has allowed me to push them even further and I know we’ve created something special.’ Famed for its distinctly floral, subtle smokiness, Highland Park has always exhibited a lighter more honeyed characteristic running through its DNA delivered in part by its specific link to the remote landscape of the Orkney Islands The harsher weather conditions and specifically mean that only low-growing vegetation such as heather can thrive which in turn has lead to a unique composition of peat the distinctive character of Highland Park’s heathered-peat stands out,’ Motion said ‘There isn’t the intense woodiness that I’d typically expect to taste in a whisky of this age.’ The bottle design and outer pack pays homage to the island’s Standing Stones of Stenness which date back an incredible 5,000 years – older than Stonehenge. The presentation is a continued collaboration between revered cabinet maker John Galvin and glass designer Michael Rudak who first came together to work on the Highland Park 54-year-old release The whisky is bottled at its natural strength of 47.1% ginger snap biscuits and a subtle waft of gentle This is probably not the page you’re looking for Orkney distillery Highland Park has released a 56-year-old whisky – its oldest whisky to date with only 170 bottles available for £40,000 (US$49,437) Highland Park 56 comes from a never-before-tasted cask from the same line that has produced some of the distillery’s oldest and rarest whiskies The 56-year-old surpasses the brand’s previous oldest release, a 54-year-old launched in February 2023 During his first year as master whisky maker in 2008 Gordon Motion identified 10 ‘exceptional’ casks from 1968 He decided to give the whisky from these casks a second maturation in first-fill Motion explained: “As casks are natural products but every now and then I find something interesting that just stops me in my tracks and that’s exactly what I experienced with these 10 “The second maturation has allowed me to push them even further and I know we’ve created something special.” The use of local heathered peat also adds a “distinctive subtle smoke” to the liquid Motion added: “What excites me most about the 56 whisky is that it has both complexity and vibrancy “There isn’t the intense woodiness that I’d typically expect to taste in a whisky of this age.”  The 47.1% ABV whisky is said to have an aroma of jasmine as well as flavours of Seville orange peel The bottle design was inspired by Orkney’s nature and culture with the island’s Standing Stones of Stenness influencing the decanter and presentation case Master crafter John Galvin and glass designer Michael Rudak collaborated for the second time after working together on Highland Park 54 to create the design of the brand’s latest whisky Galvin said: “Highland Park 54 was all about how Orkney was created and the geological make-up of the islands What we wanted to do for the 56 was to continue this story and explore humanity’s fingerprint on the islands and that dynamic relationship with the land and the use of all the beautiful “When we visited the Standing Stones of Stenness and a real celebration of the craft of the people who created them thousands of years ago “I pulled through elements and textures created with the 54 to create harmony and I designed the presentation case to stand very proud the shape is almost an abstract version of two of the standing stones I used an equal combination of precision engineering and craft to create the presentation case to respect that interaction between human and nature.” Highland Park 56 is
