A Highland Park man is being held in Lake County Jail after setting a fire to a Highland Park family’s garbage can then threatening to kidnap one of the victims unless he received $80,000
was arrested and charged with a Class 2 felony count of Arson and six Class 3 felony counts of Intimidation following the incidents that took place over one week from April 28 and May 2
He is also charged with a Class 4 felony count of phone harassment
Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney Manuel Mandujano said in a weekend court appearance Sunday that the three Highland Park victims and family members awoke at 3:26 a.m
on April 28 to find their garbage can engulfed in flames on their property
Paint supplies and other flammable substances had been placed in the garbage can before the fire was set
causing a portion of the lawn and the garbage receptacle to be destroyed
the first victim received a text message from an unknown person who said he was part of the group that torched the garbage
and they would take the daughter and second victim hostage if the victims did not give the group $80,000
the second victim and daughter named in the threat received the same text about the fire and the abduction
but the text added that the next fire would be set inside the home
Highland Park Police traced the text messages back to the cell phone provider
which then traced back to an IP address for the wifi at the Highland Park Library
Surveillance video viewed by police showed Aragon entering the Highland Park Library three times in the moments before each text message was sent to the victims
and the Highland Park man confessed to starting the garbage can fire and threatening the victims
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a motion to detain Aragon until trial and Lake County Judge Christopher Morozin ordered Aragon held pending a detention hearing Monday afternoon

From 19th century landing place for Italian immigrants to Latino neighborhood to hipster enclave
the sandwiches on sale demonstrate its evolution
From lip-smacking pastrami Reubens to vegan tortas and old-school Italian sandwiches … it's hard to pick a favorite
it creates the perfect conditions for a slew of sandwich spots that combine novel experimentation with old-time tradition
Initially a landing spot for 19th-century Italian immigrants
the neighborhood later became predominantly Latino before evolving into today's hipster hot spot
All those influences can still be felt in eateries along Fig and York
I used to live there and still have an affection for the area
And I have my favorites to head to for a great sandwich when I’m hungry and nearby
And while you can indulge in something creative like the Kold Kimcheezy (comprising smoked ham
we opted for Jeff’s Special — a meticulously crafted reuben famous for its fall-apart house-made pastrami and a crunchy gruyère crisp tucked away amidst the tried-and-true combo of sauerkraut and Russian dressing
It's pure decadence between two slices of griddle rye
It's packed with a breaded patty made from soy protein and topped with beans
but I was surprised at how much of a light bite it was
with the flavors and textures intermingling
there’s a “less is more” quality to Galco’s version that I sincerely appreciated
And while you’ll never find anything like this Italian sandwich in Italy (sandwiches in Italy are famously austere
not unlike the iconic “The Sandwich” at Roma Market in Pasadena
There are even more sandwiches to try in Highland Park that are beyond our list
Here are a few other spots that are worth the stop:
The menu celebrates the cuisine of Mexico City or “Distrito Federal,” like their pambazo
Luca and I split ours while sitting at one of their many sidewalk tables
The saturated bread is fused with a potato and chorizo mixture that melts in your mouth
The bagel’s subtle earthiness danced in lockstep to the beat of the beet cream cheese
while its nuttiness was mirrored by the perfectly crisp sliver of fried salmon skin that gives the sandwich its unique texture
It turns out that pumpernickel isn’t just the best choice for Belle’s iconic lox-laced sandwich — it may be the only choice

a 56-year-old expression presented in a bespoke case inspired by the 5,000-year-old Standing Stones of Stenness
The 56 year old has been specially selected from an extraordinary parcel of ten casks that were discovered by Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion in 2008
Despite the whisky’s extraordinary age the distinctive notes of sweet smokiness from Orkney’s heather peat has remained prominent alongside a delicate character from the original re-fill casks
Motion took the decision to elevate the 1968 casks by combining them in five new
first fill casks to create an exceptional complexity
Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion details the journey of ten special 1968 casks that were combined to create this rare expression
“I like to use the analogy of a tree when talking about the history of the casks for the Highland Park 56 Year Old,” explained Gordon Motion over an email with me
but a much smaller number of main roots secure the trunk to the ground
These main roots relate to the 10 casks chosen back in 2008
The trunk of the tree represents the bringing together of these 5 casks and the progress they took over the following years
gradually going their different directions
Rudak worked with Highland Park for the 54 year old release from the same parcel
The Stenness Stones were originally built around 5,400 years ago
which makes this one of the oldest henges in the UK
the henge is a poignant inspiration that reflects many characteristics of the 56 year old whisky itself
Glass designer Michael Rudak and craftsman John Galvin draw inspiration from Orkney's ancient standing stones for the whisky's striking presentation
then the 56 Year Old should symbolise growth,” Rudak explained over an email with me to discuss his latest project with Highland Park
“We were inspired by how man first began to touch and shape the land
utilising its natural materials to create something harmonious from something wild
“The Standing Stones are arguably the most prominent and everlasting fingerprint of man on the island
and I love how they evoke a sense of strength and rawness from every angle
but at the same time they’ve been placed so considerately to evoke a sense of welcoming and unity
The stones reminded me about one of my favourite things about the distillery—it has been built organically over time as and when needed
The case to protect and display both bottle and whisky was the work of Master crafter John Galvin
Galvin created a bespoke wooden box that seems to flow around and envelope the glass bottle in a very organic manner
I really enjoyed discovering how we can communicate a single concept across two different elements in slightly different ways to create one harmonious product,” added Rudak
glass and whisky creates a sleek and modern design that is striking enough to be fitting for what is to be Highland Park’s oldest whisky to date
and another step toward premiumisation for the Orkney brand
In 2024 we were introduced to Highland Park’s new branding
and the presentation of the 56 year old echos the themes we saw in the updated styling
There is still wild and rugged Orkney at the heart
but the themes are more subtly organic—rather than the dramatic viking themes of earlier branding
Overall it's got a more sophisticated feel
Highland Park's strategic move towards premium releases reflects industry trends while maintaining its distinctive Orkney character through heather-peat influence
The move toward premiumisation at Highland Park is not surprising
However for Highland Park this path was started in part back in 2008
when Motion chose ten casks to take to the next level
At that time fifty year old whisky was still a novelty
In today’s scotch industry you could argue fifty is the bare minimum to call yourself premium
Age alone is not enough to stand out today
a connection with the purchaser that speaks of the exceptional
It is that story—that spark—that the parent company behind Highland Park is well versed in finding
“The fact that the whisky had spent 40 years in refill casks means that it has maintained a very delicate
These last 16 years in a first fill American oak ex-Sherry cask
have delivered intensely perfumed jasmine and lilac notes with sweet raisins
and cloudy honey aroma balanced with a hint of pink grapefruit
his passion for the whisky he has crafted shining through his descriptions
“The flavour is rich and complex with hints of citrus
mixing with a slightly smoky almost lapsang souchong tea character
The after taste is one of intense woody spices
For Highland Park’s oldest whisky to date it is the perseverance of the core sweet smokeyness that makes it stand above its peers
56 years old is an extraordinary age for peated whisky—which is usually renowned for tending to lose its smoke flavours over long maturation
We don’t tend to talk about terroir often with whisky—that tendency for the locality to shape the flavour of a local whisky—but for Highland Park their local peat is a defining characteristic
That is because in Orkney the peat is predominantly heather
which creates distinctive sweet smokey notes compared to the peat found in the highlands and different again to that of Islay
Perhaps it is the compounds from the heather smoke that survives and develops better through a long maturation
Or perhaps it is the exceptional nature of these particular casks
Personally I’m a fan of the more “quiet” side of luxury branding and so I enjoy Highland Park’s more minimalistic new look
This latest release is a good balance of that alongside the more in depth stories you need to weave to give customers that connection that drives them to want to own a historic bottle
Just 170 bottles of Highland Park 56 have been created
They will be available from select retailers from 22nd January 2025 at $50,000 (£40,000)

Highland Park has released its oldest and rarest single malt Scotch Whisky
a 56-year-old created from a never-before-tasted cask
Highland Park 56 comes from the same line that has produced some of the distillery’s oldest and rarest whiskies.

Motion identified ten casks from 1968 with potential
He gave the whisky a second maturation in first-fill sherry-seasoned casks which have gone on to produce some of the oldest and rarest whiskies from the distillery
Motion continued: “As casks are natural products
I broadly know what I’ll get from each
but every now and then I find something interesting that just stops me in my tracks and that’s exactly what I experienced with these ten
The second maturation has allowed me to push them even further and I know we’ve created something special
It’s exciting to share the 56 for the first time.”
The presentation of the whisky was created by John Galvin and Michael Rudak to tell the story of the distillery’s Orkney home
inspired by the Standing Stones of Stenness

they will come.” A groundbreaking was held Thursday morning in Potter County symbolizing the start of paving and utilities of a soon to be built community called Buffalo Highlands
“We’re supporting this project to build a new school and a CTE school out here to support a community we hope develops
We're hoping to get over 700 homes developed in this area over the next 10 years,” said Kevin Sawyer
President of Buffalo Highlands Development Foundation
When voters in Highland Park ISD passed a bond in 2023
it enabled the district to go forward with a vision and plan to build for the future
“We recognize that industry was buying up all the property in the district and we felt like we needed property where residential homes could actually be developed because that’s what increases enrollment in our district,” said Tonya Detten
president of the Highland Park School Board
“Development for commercial property that would allow for grocery stores
all of that could support the community as a whole once the housing area gets developed,” said Sawyer
“We’re starting on a project that will put in utilities and streets for Buffalo Highlands and for the school facilities that are going to be built here,” said Jimmy Hannon
“We’re building an early learning academy and a CTE Center that we will more affectionately call the cube.”
Construction on the early learning academy and CTE Center should get underway sometime in the later part of the year
The district hopes to have them operational sometime in 2027

Just 170 bottles of the $49k whisky are available
Highland Park – the two-century-plus-year-old Scotch distillery on Orkney’s wild shores – has once again delved into its extensive archive and released its oldest whisky yet: the Highland Park 56
Selected from a never-before-tasted 1968 cask that master whisky maker Gordon Motion selected in 2008
the release marks one of the distillery’s rarest whiskies
The liquid underwent a final ageing in first-fill sherry seasoned butts: “The second maturation has allowed me to push them even further and I know we’ve created something special,” said Motion
“It’s exciting to share the 56 for the first time.”

While the Highland Park 56 still has plenty of the peaty smoke for which the distillery is so well known (it exclusively uses Orkney peat; “If there’s no Orkey peat
there’s no Highland Park,” according to Motion)
Soapy jasmine and pine on the nose lead to vibrant citrus on the palette
“What excites me most about the 56 whisky is that it has both complexity and vibrancy
the distinctive character of Highland Park’s Orkney heathered-peat stands out,” Motion added.

“There isn’t the intense woodiness that I’d typically expect to taste in a whisky of this age
The 56 has all the complexity and depth you’d expect of an aged whisky
but you can absolutely taste the distinctive
subtle smoke of our Orkney heathered peat.”
The rare liquid is housed in an ornate glass decanter
inspired by Orkney’s Standing Stones of Stenness
Thought to be the earliest henge monument on the British Isles (meaning they outdate the far more famous Stonehenge) the standing stones were erected over 5,000 years ago.

Tasked with capturing their majesty and replicating it in glass bottle form were master crafters John Galvin and Michael Rudak
the stones’ “stature encourages and inspires you to walk around them
exploring their texture and history”.
“We brought that sentiment through into the decanter design
The form is purposely designed to look strong and proud
but it has been softened and dimpled to represent warmth and elegance
The organic irregular textures evoke the powerful water that’s helped shape Orkney’s natural landscape and resources.”

he added: "What excites me most about the 56 whisky is that it has both complexity and vibrancy
the distinctive character of Highland Park’s Orkney heathered peat stands out
There isn’t the intense woodiness that I’d typically expect to taste in a whisky of this age."
Tasting notes supplied by Highland Park highlight florals
Highland Park has previously released several high-age expressions, including a 54 Years Old. Duncan Taylor also released a Highland Park 54 Years Old last year under its independent bottling line
The inspiration behind the presentation box for the new 56 Years Old comes from Orkney World Heritage site the Standing Stones of Stenness
It was made through collaboration between master crafter John Galvin and glass designer Michael Rudak
who previously designed the casing for Highland Park's 54 Years Old
Highland Park 56 Years Old is bottled at 47.1% ABV and has an RRP of £40,000. 170 bottles have been released globally, available via select specialist retailers. For more information, visit www.highlandparkwhisky.com

ShareSaveBusinessRetailBrand Makeovers: Havana Club Icónica Rum And Highland Park ScotchByKevin Rozario
and the global traveling shopper.Follow AuthorNov 26
10:33pm ESTShareSaveThe Icónica makeover is cohesive and upscale
Icónica is the name of Havana Club’s established top-end range; a luxury Cuban rum crafted through an exceptionally long and careful tropical aging process that has won the brand numerous medals in international taste and design competitions
Those attractive elements are now being communicated more strongly though a packaging and marketing re-brand
from the logo and labeling to wooden stoppers in place of screw caps and a more unified visual identity
The new Icónica had its grand unveiling in La Villa Mande in Paris at the end of September complete with a classic 1958 Chevy Impala in the driveway to instill a retro Cuban vibe
but now a new chapter is dawning as luxury cues become a bigger part of the picture
Asbel Morales: “Each bottle in the Icónica collection encapsulates the mastery of Cuban rum-making
More a legacy now recognised by UNESCO as a World Intangible Heritage.”
One of them is the revival of the brand’s continuous ageing technique first pioneered by the late rum master Don Navarro in 1971 with the creation of Havana Club Añejo 7 Año
this was a novel style claimed by the brand to have “redefined the standard for all extra-aged and prestige Cuban rums.” The new design—with Havana’s revered and graceful Giraldilla statue at its centre—is meant to communicate this craftsmanship and its guardianship by all the brand’s rum masters to date
we are committed to preserving and passing down these traditions.”
The three expressions start at about €59 ($62) for the Selección de Maestros
bottled at cask strength (45% ABV) before stepping up to the 15-year-old Gran Reserva Añejo 15 Años (40% ABV) priced at €209 ($220)
the only age-statement product in the collection
Top billing goes to Máximo Extra Añejo (40% ABV) with a production run of 1,000 bottles annually and presented in a hand-blown crystal decanter that is glass stoppered
This very rare expression comes in at €2,500 ($2,100) and “has 10 generations of maestros in every drop” notes Morales
The Icónica 15-year-old Gran Reserva Añejo 15 Años at $220 is the only age-statement product in the ..
The revamped Icónica Collection is rolling out globally to retail
restaurants and hotels in the run up to the holidays and should be widely available globally from early next year
but has yet to enter the travel retail channel
but the brand is now putting extra focus on Spain
While Pernod Ricard is buoying rum with Icónica
Edrington is doing something somewhat similar with one of its key single malts—Highland Park
And the travel retail channel will be key to exposing it
Highland Park's makeover is designed to attract new
A company spokesperson said: “This is a total repositioning of the brand
That Nordic connection will always be there but going down the Viking route was quite one-dimensional and we really wanted to appeal to a broader audience.”
The new target is the affluent Millennial as much as whisky connoisseurs
with 25- to 35-year-olds as the sweet spot
told me: “Our existing consumers are getting older and we need to appeal to younger demographics
One way of doing that is talking the language that they respect and respond to: our provenance
In retail environments we can really talk to that provenance and bring the brand to life.”
A more contemporary look will roll out across the brand’s 14-
and 18-year-old travel-retail exclusive whiskies from early 2025 though domestic markets are seeing products with age ranges at 12-
Taking its cues from the contrasts in the rugged Orcadian landscapes and the warming waters of the Gulf Stream for the younger travel retail expressions
the new look will redefine the centuries-old distillery
believed to be a hike on the existing liquids as the format is reducing from one liter to 700ml
The first locations to get the range will be the brand’s top 25 airports led by San Francisco
The range retains the elements that distinguish Highland Park; peat infused with floral heather rather than woody roots (because trees find it difficult to grow in Orkney’s winds)
and long aging thanks to a temperate climate (enabled by the Gulf Stream)
said: “It’s Orkney’s heathered peat that gives us our subtly smoky flavor and it’s as unique as the place it’s made
we have a great opportunity to celebrate a new look
while continuing to share the distinctive whisky we’re famed for.” Paul Condron
added that the new design would put the unique flavor of the heathered peat “front and center.”
The packaging design should appeal to both sexes as the color palette in what is quite a radical makeover is fresher and brighter
a total contrast to the black shades of the Viking past
The outer features strata patterns reflecting the wind-beaten landscape while the non-colored shade of the liquid inside is highlighted using an updated bottle shape
one of Scotland’s oldest whisky distilleries
The whisky
with a distillation date going all the way back to 1968
identified as having both ‘exceptional complexity and vibrancy’
After refilling them into first-fill sherry-seasoned casks to give them an additional depth of flavour
the whiskies have gone on to produce some of the oldest and rarest whiskies the distillery has released so far
The latest release is drawn from one of these particular casks and its contents have never been bottled before
‘Our rarest and oldest whiskies are the ultimate expression of Highland Park’s craft,’ said Motion
I broadly know what I’ll get from each one
The second maturation has allowed me to push them even further and I know we’ve created something special.’
Famed for its distinctly floral, subtle smokiness, Highland Park has always exhibited a lighter
more honeyed characteristic running through its DNA
delivered in part by its specific link to the remote landscape of the Orkney Islands
The harsher weather conditions and specifically
mean that only low-growing vegetation such as heather can thrive
which in turn has lead to a unique composition of peat
the distinctive character of Highland Park’s heathered-peat stands out,’ Motion said
‘There isn’t the intense woodiness that I’d typically expect to taste in a whisky of this age.’
The bottle design and outer pack pays homage to the island’s Standing Stones of Stenness which date back an incredible 5,000 years – older than Stonehenge. The presentation is a continued collaboration between revered cabinet maker John Galvin and glass designer Michael Rudak who first came together to work on the Highland Park 54-year-old release
The whisky is bottled at its natural strength of 47.1%
ginger snap biscuits and a subtle waft of gentle
This is probably not the page you’re looking for
Orkney distillery Highland Park has released a 56-year-old whisky – its oldest whisky to date
with only 170 bottles available for £40,000 (US$49,437)
Highland Park 56 comes from a never-before-tasted cask from the same line that has produced some of the distillery’s oldest and rarest whiskies
The 56-year-old surpasses the brand’s previous oldest release, a 54-year-old launched in February 2023
During his first year as master whisky maker in 2008
Gordon Motion identified 10 ‘exceptional’ casks from 1968
He decided to give the whisky from these casks a second maturation in first-fill
Motion explained: “As casks are natural products
but every now and then I find something interesting that just stops me in my tracks and that’s exactly what I experienced with these 10
“The second maturation has allowed me to push them even further and I know we’ve created something special.”
The use of local heathered peat also adds a “distinctive subtle smoke” to the liquid
Motion added: “What excites me most about the 56 whisky is that it has both complexity and vibrancy
“There isn’t the intense woodiness that I’d typically expect to taste in a whisky of this age.”
The 47.1% ABV whisky is said to have an aroma of jasmine
as well as flavours of Seville orange peel
The bottle design was inspired by Orkney’s nature and culture with the island’s Standing Stones of Stenness influencing the decanter and presentation case
Master crafter John Galvin and glass designer Michael Rudak collaborated for the second time
after working together on Highland Park 54
to create the design of the brand’s latest whisky
Galvin said: “Highland Park 54 was all about how Orkney was created and the geological make-up of the islands
What we wanted to do for the 56 was to continue this story and explore humanity’s fingerprint on the islands and that dynamic relationship with the land and the use of all the beautiful
“When we visited the Standing Stones of Stenness
and a real celebration of the craft of the people who created them thousands of years ago
“I pulled through elements and textures created with the 54 to create harmony and I designed the presentation case to stand very proud
the shape is almost an abstract version of two of the standing stones
I used an equal combination of precision engineering and craft to create the presentation case to respect that interaction between human and nature.”
Highland Park 56 is available to buy now from select whisky specialists such as The Whisky Shop and Berry Bros & Rudd

On the 1998 Smashing Pumpkins song “Ava Adore,” Billy Corgan sings this line: “In you
I crash cars.” People probably shouldn’t take that so literally
Corgan is the owner of Madame Zuzu’s
a tea shop in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park
His street doesn’t look particularly dangerous
and it’s not like Madame Zuzu’s is right on a sharp curve in the road or something
two different cars have crashed into Madame Zuzu’s
a car drove over a curb and directly into the front window of Madame Zuzu’s

A new apartment building is planned in Des Moines' Highland Park
adding new residences to the neighborhood's burgeoning business district
Developer Jake Sparks of West Des Moines proposes building the 12-unit building on vacant property at 3608 Fifth Ave.
just east of Cha Cha's Hiland Bakery and the Slow Down Coffee Co
according to a memo sent to members of Des Moines' Urban Design Review Board
which voted April 15 to recommend approval of the design for the project
City Council will have the final say on the plan
More: From steam burgers to Schnitz: What to eat at Lachele's Fine Foods, The Fitz in Highland Park
an economic development coordinator for the city
said the building is proposed for the vacant former site of an eight-unit apartment building
Sparks told the board he became interested in the property when he worked in development for Des Moines' Lauridsen family
"We really wanted something to complement the area."
Construction is anticipated to start this spring and be completed by summer 2026
Goldfinch Lofts move aheadThe board also voted to recommend approval of the design of the previously announced Goldfinch Lofts
mixed-use building slated for construction on the site of the disused Bank of America building at the northeast corner of Ingersoll Avenue at 35th Street
"This project is very competitive when it comes to sustainability," Poole told the board
The three-story building will have about 9,500 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor and 28 residential units: 24 one-bedroom apartments and four with two bedrooms
Behind the building will be a 47-space parking lot
27 the Des Moines City Council approved an urban renewal development agreement for the project
which provides a forgivable loan to assist with financing
Husband-wife duo Molly and Scott Cutler of Cutler Development are behind the plan. They also built the 20-unit, mixed-use Star Lofts at 2701 Ingersoll
That building is made entirely of low-carbon concrete and mass timber — a material made by pressing smaller planks of wood together
similar to the wood beams found in some older churches and other historic structures
Scott Cutler told the board that mass timber structures can be designed to last up to 250 years
"So we hope this building will be a long-lasting contributor toward having quality housing in the Ingersoll neighborhood," he told the board
The Goldfinch Apartments will be the sole recipient of the state's Innovation Set Aside award for this year’s round of funding
making the project eligible for up to $10 million in federal tax credits over 10 years
Cutler told the board he and his wife hope the project will show developers across the country that affordable housing can be built in environmentally friendly ways
Knop told the board that the Cutlers plan to add to the project's aesthetic appeal by burying overhead power lines near the property
He said two of the ground-floor retail spaces will be designed to house restaurants
"We're really excited about bringing this project to Ingersoll," he said
Board member Tim Hielkema suggested adding more bike parking for restaurant and retail establishments
they're going to use whatever is there," Hielkema said of cyclists leaning their bikes on nearby railings and racks
Construction is scheduled to start in August
and the project will cost about $12.36 million
according to a memo addressed to the board members

A new park in the heart of Des Moines' Highland Park neighborhood will honor a former parks and recreation director
Des Moines City Council members on April 21 approved establishing a park on city-owned land at 3825 E
whose summer job with the city turned into a decades-long career in the Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department
Council members approved plans to start construction on the nearly $357,000 project, which will be next to the Hamilton Drain, a piece of land that catches and slows down stormwater. The park will be the second in the Highland Park neighborhood and the 78th in the city
I'm very proud of it," said City Council member Linda Westergaard
who represents the ward where the park will be located
Krieg was a "pioneer in her time," Westergaard added
which rates the 100 most populous cities based on total park acreage
"Her ability to connect with people and understand their needs made her an exemplary leader and role model," city officials said of Krieg in the city document
"Naming the park will allow future generations to learn about and build upon her legacy
and values that Des Moines Parks and Recreation continues to uphold."
Plans for the 3.2-acre park will include a new open-air shelter
Formerly a residential area, city officials purchased the land for the Hamilton Drain project with the intent to use a portion of the stormwater basin as parkland
City officials proposed the list of amenities based on public input from an online questionnaire and open houses with residents in late 2023 and early 2024
Krieg was hired in 1928 for a temporary summer position
This evolved into a 46-year career in Des Moines serving as the superintendent of recreation
some of Krieg's recognitions and achievements include:
The Iowa Parks and Recreation Association offers the Kathryn Krieg Memorial Scholarship to support students pursuing a parks and recreation degree
When will the park be completed?Work on the park is expected to start this spring and be completed in the fall
