Those involved in the scheme, which has allegedly paid out $1.3b in claims so far, are accused of coaching people to make fraudulent claims for historical sexual abuse against the NSW Department of Communities and Justice and the NSW Department of Education. "Detectives identified several 'claims farmers' at the centre of the scheme. These individuals allegedly approached adults who were former young offenders, inmates, and public school students, encouraging them to file fraudulent compensation claims for historical child sexual abuse while in care," a NSW Police spokesperson said. "The claims farmers then coached these prospective claimants on how to make fraudulent claims through various Sydney law firms, receiving a benefit for each referral." The proceeds were reportedly referred to as "bum money" within the criminal syndicates, and detectives from the Financial Crimes Squad suspect a significant portion of the $1.3b worth of claims are fraudulent. In addition to the arrests, police also raided a law firm in Sydney where they seized a number of items. View +4 PhotosPolice will allege in court the seven people charged stood to make $3.75 million in fraudulent sexual abuse compensation claims but were uncovered before the claims were paid out. The Horsley woman was granted conditional bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on March 25. Strike Force Veritas was established by State Crime Command's Financial Crimes Squad in February 2024 to investigate the alleged fraudulent claims, and more arrests expected. Rebecca said she had noticed a spike in dangerous driving on West Dapto Road in recent times "I don't know if it's because Darkes Road near Integral Energy Park is closed and people are having to go the long way home and rushing "I don't know if it's the actual length of the road and people thinking they can go as fast as they want to or even that the road itself is so full of potholes and bumps." dozens of residents had their say on the Mercury's Facebook page after news broke of Friday's head-on crash on West Dapto Road sometimes 5am in the morning," one man said "Had a few near-misses so I decided to let a couple of NSW Government agencies know about it "I received written advice telling me the road is never busy and always quiet ..." his mother knows she will never again buy a gift for him and sees his friends reach milestones in their lives that her beloved son won't have the opportunity to enjoy She remembers Brayden as an "amazing" young man and he was just so respected and loved," Mrs Chater said Law firm Horsley Christie has welcomed Whanganui-born-and-bred Jai Stephens as a new partner Stephens, who became partner at the start of April, joined the Whanganui firm in 2017 Horsley Christie is a general law practice with four partners three registered legal executives and a total team of 18 Stephens said he was excited to embrace his new role and grateful to have the opportunity “It takes a while to settle in; it’s quite exciting to be asked but it’s kind of surreal for a long time - I don’t know that even now it’s quite sunk in,” he said “It’s definitely something that most lawyers aim for; so it’s a huge compliment from the people that are asking you to join them.” St George’s School and Whanganui High School After a short stint in the United Kingdom during a gap year but realised it was not something he wanted to pursue and switched to law alongside a finance degree Stephens said he first considered being a lawyer during his time in Christchurch after being inspired by friends “It was always one of those things that was interesting but was never really on the radar; then I was in the halls and a group of guys were doing law and I ended up talking to them about it and thinking it sounded better than the stuff I was doing – that was the seed,” he said Stephens returned to Whanganui and started working at Horsley Christie in April 2017 he moved to Wellington to get more experience in a bigger city Stephens returned to Horsley Christie as an associate and has specialised in property He said he had learned a lot since becoming a lawyer in his field particularly the art of applying the knowledge he gained from university “I feel like it is a job which university teaches you a particular way of looking at things but when you come out you have to learn the processes and the practical application of the education that you’ve done,” he said you come out and you think you know a lot; then you get in get given a file and start to learn the application of the law – that was definitely the biggest learning curve.” Stephens’ promotion to partner was a challenge he was ready to take on “There is a lot of responsibility that comes with it but there is also a huge amount of good that you can do from a position like that as well,” he said “You get to do some really good things for a lot of people and have a positive influence on the community the people you meet and are engaging with.” Stephens said he had not had time to think about the next steps because becoming partner took “a lot of work” He wanted his transition into partner to be seamless and to continue representing the firm as best as he could Taranaki has 277 farms with consent to discharge effluent into waterways — Pretty good strength and power at the point of attack to stand up offensive linemen and reset the line of scrimmage against the run — Has the strength and length to get extension and shed blocks Also has a decent rip move to escape blocks — Decent bull rush when he keeps his hands tight to occasionally collapse the pocket — Susceptible to getting reached with subpar block recognition and lateral movement skills — Plays high and struggles to sink his hips to avoid getting washed inside against down blocks and double-teams Will likely be more of a two-down player in the NFL Cam Horsley doesn't offer much as a pass-rusher but he could be a solid run defender in the NFL He has plenty of strength at the point of attack to gain control of the block and shed to make tackles in his gap he will need to play with better pad level and be more effective against double-teams to have a long career as a two-down defender GRADE: 5.7 (Backup/Draftable — 6th-7th Round) Written by B/R NFL Scout Matt Holder By NOTICEBOARD · 30 April 2025 Fresh from victory at the Leith Hill Music Festival Horsley Choral Society will be holding a joint summer concert with Oxshott Choral Society at St John's School Chapel The concert entitled 'Summer Days — Summer Praise' will include music by Mozart Handel and Mendelssohn with songs for a Summer evening The choirs will be joined by professional soloists Jane Searle (soprano);
