The Hatch afternoon tea is only on Sundays between 2-4pm and you are advised to pre-book where you have to leave a credit card deposit there are also some drink upgrades available For $85 a person you can start your afternoon tea with a Mimosa cocktail $105 per person gets you 2 Hours of bottomless mimosas white or red wines and $110 gets you the Champagne Reception aka a glass of Pol Roger on arrival None of us are big drinkers so we go with just the afternoon tea We are sitting outside on the covered balcony on a day where the weather alternates between sunny and rainy every 30 minutes but there are heaters above to keep us warm The tea comes out and I choose the sticky chai while Sophia has the Vietnam high mountain oolong tea and Janice has the English breakfast tea They all come in enormous teapots with the milk of your choice for Janice and I After the requisite photos and videos are taken, we start eating. The first thing we notice is that nothing is the same as what features on the menu apart from the scone. We're not mad though because what we have is delicious. I've been to Hatch before for dinner and I think because it is a very good restaurant, the quality of the afternoon tea food is actually very good. I start with the beef slider that comes on a soft bun with a beef patty with sauces. Then I segue onto the smoked salmon tart with a thin tart shell and a lemon cream underneath a generous amount of smoked salmon. These tarts are big - no dainty little tarts here and I think if I had waited longer, the thin pastry shell would have perhaps fallen apart with the moisture of the cream so I recommend eating this first. Another favourite is the half crumpet topped with egg salad which is a clever take on an egg salad sandwich. However my favourite savoury item is the croquette with a slice of zucchini pickle on top and filled with soft beef cheek (since nothing matched on the menu I'm purely guessing). This is enormous and absolutely delicious and the pickle and sauce give the rich beef a good balance. Before we know it, it's 4pm. They've offered to refill our teapots but we haven't even made a small dent in the enormous teapots. We take our time on this leisurely Sunday afternoon looking for a break in the rain. So tell me Dear Reader, do you usually get the drink upgrades for afternoon tea? This afternoon tea was independently paid for. Contact: georgesriverassociation@gmail.com Residents have reported reckless driving and loud noise throughout the night from vehicles particularly at Queens Road crossing Forest Road Gloucester Road and Park Road and at the Carrington Avenue and Gloucester Road car park Georges River Deputy mayor Nancy Liu received phone calls and text messages from residents between 9pm and 10.30pm on Friday February 7 reporting excessive noise from motorbikes and requesting urgent police action Detective Superintendent Paul Dunstan to convey the residents' concerns and he sent police out at midnight to stop the motorbikes Vivienne Chan who lives at Carrington Avenue told the council that motorbike noise can start as early as 6am and continues well past midnight Most disturbances come from P-platers who repeatedly rev their engines up and down the streets Our neighbourhood now feels like a war zone with these disruptions occurring every 5 to 10 minutes," she said "Babies are waking in the middle of the night crying in fear due to the abrupt and explosive noise of these bikes who has been living on Park Road for more than 15 years eventually moved away because of the stress and anxiety caused by the noise "Many residents in our area are tenants or come from non-English-speaking backgrounds making it difficult to understand the complaint process or even know that these noise violations can be reported," she said Ms Chan urged the council to collaborate with local police to conduct targeted operations in noise hotspots "Data published online from a Kings Cross police operation in the City of Sydney revealed that none of the 27 tested vehicles stopped complied with noise regulations We believe similar enforcement efforts in Georges River Council could serve as an effective deterrent," she said Matthew Chu confirmed the excessive noise from motorbikes and cars late at night in the Carrington Avenue "I constantly get woken up two to three times a week sometimes as late as 1am by local vehicles driving through," Mr Chu said "If there could be some notification about what we could do as residents to report these incidents it would be helpful to try and fine these people who are creating these distances for us Perhaps the council could install a sound and speed camera on the intersection of Queens Road and Forest Road." The ongoing complaints prompted Deputy Mayor Nancy Liu to submit a Notice of Motion at the February 24 council meeting calling on the council to collaborate with the St George Police Area Command (PAC) to develop a Community Awareness Campaign promoting how to report excessive noise from motor vehicles via Council's communication channels Cr Liu also called on the General Manager to write to the St George Police Area Command to request support of increased police patrols and presence in relation to noise pollution allegedly caused by reckless motorbike riders in the problem areas Councillor Liu said she hoped the council would develop a community awareness campaign for safe and responsible driving and try to promote ways on how to report excessive noise pollution Detective Superintendent Dunstan addressed the council promising an ongoing dialogue between police and the council to provide local crime statistics and figures for the LGA "We will ensure we have the police in the right place at the right time," he said But he added that the management of policing resources is always a challenge on a Saturday night NSW Premier and Kogarah MP Chris Minns shared this tradition when he visited the Chinese Australian Services Society (CASS) Seniors' Activity Group at Hurstville today to celebrate Lunar New Year with them But he also shared another New Year message - the importance of community safety Mr Minns was accompanied by Georges River Councillor and candidate for the Federal Seat of Barton Councillor Ashvini Ambihaipahar to the CASS seniors' group which meets at the Hurstville Senior Citizens Centre every Friday for exercise connection with the community and to make friends particularly as we get older," Mr Minns told the seniors' group "What they allow you to do is lean on somebody particularly when you are going through a tough time and a problem shared is a problem halved in my opinion that was what my Mum always used to say to me," he said "I just want to acknowledge today is a pretty tough time in Sydney There's quite a number of very serious incidents in the community - antisemitic attacks "And I know that many members are worried about it but I want to give you an assurance that community safety the backing of the police and that when someone is arrested they face the full force of the law right now is the number one priority of my government "We can't have a successful community unless there's a safe community unless they feel they can walk down the street at any time of the day or night and feel that they are safe "I want to say I will not leave any stone unturned to make sure that is the reality right across the state and particularly in my open community right here in Hurstville,' he said Mr Minns' visit kicked off the Lunar New Year celebrations in Hurstville which will see an expected 50,000 visit Forest Road tomorrow to sample the best Chinese cuisine and culture and tp welcome in the Year of the Snake The Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac is traditionally associated with transformation Snakes are known for their ability to shed their skin symbolizing the process of letting go of the old and embracing the new This theme is expected to resonate throughout 2025 encouraging individuals to release past baggage and embark on a journey of self-discovery Hurstville met last week to protest about the state of the park. The recent closure of Kempt Field Hurstville for remediation has seen a surge in visitors to the suburb's Woodville Park putting a strain on the park's toilets The increase in visitors has particularly impacted members of the Hurstville Community Garden who have to use the toilet facilities at nearby Woodville Park more than 100 people from diverse groups use this park and volunteers from our garden,'' Charlotte Mullens a committee member of the Hurstville Community Garden told the November 25 meeting of Georges River Council "The toilets are often waterlogged and unhygienic especially those with mobility challenges," she said it is normal to have more than 50 people in our community garden "We have regular volunteers and guests of the garden who have family members using wheelchairs They visit the garden and join our activities and events But they don't stay long in the garden because they are not satisfied with the toilet facilities in Woodville Park." Charlotte said the community garden is not asking for toilets to be installed on their site just for the council to maintain schedule of cleaning times for the Woodville Park toilets "The Hurstville Community Garden Committee requests that the Georges River Council address this concern from its members and the public regarding the suitability and condition of the toilet facilities at Woodville Park," she said Ruby Chen told the council that uneven flooring in the toilets at Woodville Park causes water to pool around the toilets forming puddles that are unable to exit through the drain Uneven ground near the children's playground causes significant risk of injury and the limited number of chairs often leads to fighting especially among seniors looking for a sunny spot in winter or shade in summer "Woodville Park is a true reflection of Hurstville cherished and actively enjoyed by hundreds of people each day," Ruby said.n "Unfortunately the condition of the park has been steadily deteriorating "We understand that Georges River Council is currently focused on the delivery of the playground upgrade project however we urgently need even ground and solution to the bathroom drainage issue to ensure a safer and hygienic experience," she said Councillor Ben Wang submitted a formal Question with Notice to the council (QWN029-24)\ addressing safety and amenity improvements for Woodville Park Cr Wang said Woodville Park is a vibrant and cherished public space frequented by hundreds daily for recreation with the increased influx of users following the Kempt Field closure maintaining this essential green space has become a pressing issue," he said "We must prioritize immediate upgrades to improve safety and usability for all visitors "A well-maintained park not only enhances community well-being but also ensures this space remains accessible to everyone." Georges River Council is undertaking a Playground and Playspace Renewal at Woodville Park with construction expected to commence in early 2025 the council staff wrote in response to Cr Wang's Question With Notice "Council is currently focused on the delivery of the playground upgrade project within Woodville Park Based on the community requests outlined in this Questions with Notice Council will investigate the future development of a 'Spatial Framework document' for the site which identifies a clear vision to help improve the quality of community amenity and create a more cohesive space for everyone to enjoy "Significant community consultation will be undertaken during the development of this framework demonstrating Council's commitment to collaborating with the community to provide the best outcomes for all community members "Council officers have scheduled maintenance work on the existing bench seating to occur within coming weeks Woodville Park public amenity is on a daily cleaning roster." the South Hurstville RSL Sub-branch and club have grown to be a force for friendship and veteran support in the local community five army veterans from the then Hurstville sub-branch met and decided to form a sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers Sailors and Airmen's League of Australia at South Hurstville Ten new members needed to be found before an application for a new Sub-Branch could be granted the first official meeting was held in a small shop owned by Mr Kennedy the veterans decided to buy an Army hut from the War Disposal Department to be used as a temporary Club Room It was necessary to borrow Forty pounds from the local publican to make up the purchase price of One Hundred and Five pounds The next step was to dismantle the hut and get it to South Hurstville to be erected on a piece of land rented from Fred Wood (WW1 Veteran) on what is now the service station in Connells Point Road dismantled the hut and brought it back to South Hurstville windows and doors brought out of storage and the clubroom ready to occupy on the 30/10/1945 The hut was officially opened on 30/11/1946 by Mr Williams MLA member for Georges River at that time "The members and their friends had some good times in the hut and many of us look back to the friends we made in those days even if it was hard going." ppgrealty.com.au whose members have witnessed a huge increase of Nepalese people moving into their area in recent years.  Hurstville was a predominantly Chinese area,” says rector the Rev Brian Tung “But I noticed that more and more Nepali are moving in There are more Nepali coming into Hurstville now than Chinese I saw the possibility and potential for Nepali ministry… it has to start somewhere by someone.” As Mr Tung was praying and pondering how to reach his new neighbours with the gospel Bijaya and Kate Shrestha were also praying for ways they could serve Mr Shrestha is a Nepalese Christian who came to know Jesus from a Hindu background and spent many years in Nepal serving the church Mrs Shrestha also served on the mission field in Nepal for many years.  The couple could see the need for more Nepali ministry in Sydney given the large number of Nepalese moving into the country and felt convicted to use their gifts and experience to serve this community there were almost 60,000 people born in Nepal living in Sydney According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Nepalese people now account for 15 per cent of Hurstville’s population (Chinese people account for 47 per cent) Less than 3 per cent of the Nepalese in greater Sydney identify as Christian.  While there are already existing Nepalese ministries in Sydney – including a Nepalese congregation at St Luke’s Liverpool and a Nepalese Bible study at St Paul’s Canterbury – there is a growing need for more.  Mr and Mrs Shrestha have established a Nepali gathering in Hurstville in partnership with Evangelism and New Churches “So far it’s a small fellowship,” Mr Shrestha says “Every week there are seven to 12 people coming Mr Tung says he is consistently praying for ministry to Nepalese people “We’re literally praying every day so we can’t do ministry in the same way Going to church on a Sunday morning is not possible.  “We are praying that there are open doors.. like the challenges that Nepali face when they’re in Australia We pray that somehow it will be overcome so they can hear the gospel and be committed to Christian fellowship on a regular basis.” Mrs Shrestha adds: “Nepali need to hear [the gospel] and be discipled in their heart language Please pray that God would raise up a team to work with us who are committed to seeing the gospel go out among Nepali people.” Evangelical
