Penrith City Council has welcomed the funding allocation of $1,453,320 under the Federal and State Government’s 2024/25 – 2025/26 Road Safety Program for the upgrade of two raised wombat pedestrian crossings on Illawong Avenue and Caloola Avenue
The project will also provide additional footpath connections within the walking catchment of Kingswood Park Public School which will significantly enhance safety for children travelling to and from school
Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said securing this funding represents a significant step towards creating a safer and more walkable neighbourhood for families in Penrith
“I would like to thank the Federal and State Government in providing the funding for this important infrastructure improvement for both walking and cycling within this school catchment,” Carney said
“This wonderful initiative aims to improve children’s independence in promoting safe walking and cycling routes within school zones
The construction of the pedestrian crossings and footpath connections will hopefully encourage and foster a culture of active transport in the community
“Kingswood Park Public School has demonstrated an excellent uptake of active transport programs
making the need for safe walking routes even more critical
While the initiative promotes road safety in the community
it also creates healthier lifestyles among local families.”
Member for Penrith Karen McKeown said this fantastic initiative provides safer pedestrian access for both students and families
“I’m thrilled that these upgrades will provide improved local access to residential streets and the primary school
Kingswood Park Public School has an excellent uptake of walking to school and are huge advocators of road safety,” McKeown said

The principal of Illawong Public School has been stood aside pending an investigation into claims that "advanced and graphic sexual content" was discussed with year 6 students
Miranda MP Eleni Petinos raised the matter in State Parliament on Friday after being contacted by distressed parents
Ms Petinos said she "audibly gasped at the advanced content I was reading"
"I stress that this is well advanced sexual content that is not suitable for year 6 students and goes well beyond what would be expected to be taught in any conversations around health or consent."
A spokesmen for the NSW Department of Education said on Monday

"Following complaints by parents of Year 6 students at Illawong Public School
the principal has been directed to undertake other duties in the department
whilst a thorough investigation into this matter takes place
"We expect all our staff to deliver age-appropriate education aligned to the syllabus and in this case it did not happen
"We apologise to the school community for the distress to their children."
thanking those who had contacted her with concerns about "the suitability of material delivered to all Year 6 students on Thursday 7 November 2024
Ms French apologised for any distress caused to children or their families
"Schools are required to educate students in an age-appropriate way
"Parents or carers should have the opportunity to decide beforehand if they are happy for their children to participate."
Ms French said the principal had been directed to undertake other duties in the department
while a thorough investigation into this matter takes place
"As I understand it from the extremely concerned and upset parents
a senior member of staff at Illawong Public School discussed advanced and graphic sexual content with year 6 students"
"This was following cohort participation in the Amazing Me program
which was provided by an independent facilitator and to which parents consented
was a school staff member's discretion around an appropriate follow-up conversation and having any question students wanted answered by the individual
"I do not intend to repeat the error in judgement of the person in question and I am electing not to outline the graphic subjects that were discussed because I am conscious that Hansard is publicly accessible to all age groups
Ms Petinos said one concerned parent wrote that the person's 'actions had advanced her child's sexual knowledge far exceeding the knowledge of a 12-year-old child'
Ms Petinos said perhaps the most troubling piece of information relayed to her was that the staff member specifically instructed the students not to tell their parents about the conversation

Picture by Murray TrembathPeter Carver says he will comply with a court order to leave the 1930s shack on the Georges River at Illawong
The Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by Mr Carver against a Crowns Land eviction notice and awarded costs against him
said the department would work with Mr Carver and connect him to appropriate support services to help find alternative accommodation
Peter Carver soaks up the sun on the balcony of his shack at Illawong
"The department will file a writ of possession which will require Mr Carver to vacate the cottage after 42 days (20 March)," he said
said he and his legal team were "very disappointed" with the decision
"It's a disgrace that the state government is going to spend over $1 million demolishing 100-year-old heritage houses
this is about the state government destroying heritage value in Sutherland Shire."

and pose a health and safety risk to the community
An engineering assessment found the cottages were unstable and contain asbestos
The department intends to return the Crown land to public open space
but demolition work cannot commence until the land becomes vacant
Crown Lands maintains Mr Carver has illegally occupied the cottage for more than 20 years without paying rent
and has ignored repeated requests to vacate the cottage
The department had been forced to take the matter to court to get a resolution
Mr Carver's shack is one of five standing near the bottom of Old Ferry Road
Mr Carver said he rented his cottage from a woman in 1996
The permissive occupancy was later terminated and the department refused to allow Mr Carver to continue to live in his shack and pay rent
Mr Carver said he had spent $100,000 on renovations to the shack and sought to remain in the shack as a tenant for the rest of his life
The government submitted the cottages were originally associated with a State Coal Mine Reserve dating back to 1926
with tenures granted under an arrangement known as 'permissive occupancies' under the old Crown Lands Act that has since been repealed
The court was told the cottages were intended to be used on the basis that as the occupants passed away or moved on
the tenures would end and the cottages would eventually be removed
Mr Carver had "illegally" occupied one of the cottages since at least 2002
when he contacted the department to say he had made an agreement with one of the occupancy holders to stay there
Mr Carver had been told sub-letting the shack was illegal

Sutherland Shire Council approved the demolition of three of the shacks
which are unoccupied and in a dilapidated condition
A further DA was lodged in June to demolish the remaining two shacks and rehabilitate the foreshore for public open space
A heritage impact statement accompanying the DA said two of the cottages had been given names reflecting their temporary nature
The heritage statement said the cottages were originally among a group of 11 - the others having since been demolished
"Though these cottages were built in the 1930s
there is no evidence they were associated with accommodation for the unemployed," the statement said
"All the permissive occupancies were granted for purposes of recreation."

After Labor MP Tanya Plibersek, a former health minister, confronted him in Parliament House over his disputed claims, and the risk it places to public health, Mr Kelly was reprimanded by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
Mr Kelly’s five-bedroom, three-bathroom home is set on 840 square metres of land and comes complete with three living areas and a swimming pool, all of which backs onto bushland reserve.
The residence was a trade-up from their former Illawong home, a five-bedroom house on Shand Close that was sold in 2010 for $615,000.
The sale result offered a marginal capital gain, with records showing they had paid $502,000 for the home eight years earlier.

A 79-year-old man charged with shooting a lawyer in the groin was described as a 'gentle old man' by shocked neighbours in the quiet southern Sydney street where he cares for his sick wife and lives with his adult son
Police allege Sinve Vulic, 79, entered the ninth-floor offices of Van Cooney Lawyers on Castlereagh Street, in Sydney's CBD
holding a pistol and carrying a bag containing a sawn-off M1 carbine semi-automatic rifle
It is alleged Vulic calmly asked to speak with the head of the firm
before shooting him in the groin with the pistol
then wrestled Vulic to the ground and pinned him down until police arrived three minutes later
Vulic has been charged with shooting with intent to murder
in addition to six weapons-related offences
He is yet to enter a plea and remains in custody
although the details are shrouded in mystery
The shocking burst of alleged violence in the heart of Sydney's legal district came as a complete surprise to Vulic's neighbours on the quiet
leafy street in Illawong where he has lived for almost 30 years
One neighbour said they had heard the police raiding the house on Wednesday evening but had no idea it was connected to the alleged shooting in the city
He speaks minimal English but whenever we see him mowing the lawn or out gardening my kids go up to him and say hi,' she said
Another neighbour a few doors up said Vulic looked after his wife Kata
'He's just a gentle old man,' the neighbour said
'He walks around and visits friends in another street
I spoke to him at our neighbour's funeral and he seemed lovely
Vulic was born in Croatia and emigrated to Australia in 1967
He was a carpenter by trade but a back injury he suffered in 1982 put him out of work
he was made bankrupt as a result of a costs order made against him in unsuccessful Workers Compensation proceedings brought by him over the back injury
Vulic's two grown-up children helped him and his wife buy the current family home
did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday
where the average house price is north of $1.5million
is several hundred metres away from the banks of the Georges River
Every neighbour Daily Mail Australia spoke to did not know Vulic by name - despite the family living there for almost three decades
I think they are Macedonian or Croatian,' one neighbour added
'He's always quite friendly and says hello but they keep themselves to themselves.'
Vulic's lawyer appeared in Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday morning and requested his client receive medical assistance
Magistrate Ian Guy said all defendants are screened
NSW Police Detective Inspector David El-Badawi praised the office workers who subdued Vulic after the alleged shooting
'The people inside the office were very brave,' detective El-Badawi said
'They restrained the offender until the police arrived.'
Daily Mail Australia spoke to one office worker who confirmed he had helped subdue the alleged gunman but did not want to comment further
Detective El-Badawi described the alleged shooting as 'isolated'
Inspector Dominic Wong of NSW Ambulance said the officer workers performed first aid on Mr Cooney
'I do believe the projectile had entered his body - it wasn't a graze
But when we got on scene he was not actively bleeding,' Inspector Wong told reporters
All his vital signs were within normal limits.'

Firefighters and police were called to Lambeth Place just after 4:00pm (AEST) on Monday when the ground in the backyard of a group of townhouses started sinking.
Police said the hole was approximately 10 metres long, six metres wide and three metres deep, and opened in the backyard without warning.
Thirteen residents inside three homes were evacuated as a precaution.
Structural engineers attended the scene and declared the homes safe for all residents to return.
Superintendent Wayne Phillips from NSW Fire and Rescue said there was no information yet about what caused the sinkhole to emerge.
Hisham Bachir, a friend of one of the affected residents, said the sinkhole appeared very suddenly. (ABC News)
"The sinkhole appears to be quite dry so we're going to wait to determine when experts have a look at that tomorrow what caused that sinkhole," he said.
"We're awaiting the arrival of expert equipment that fire and rescue has, some specialised cameras and laser equipment.
"We're going to use that equipment to determine the extent of the sinkhole and the amount of damage that could be under the unit block."
Hisham Bachir, a friend of one resident, said it happened very suddenly while his friend was at home.
"This afternoon a friend of mine was sleeping on the couch and all of a sudden he heard a big crack, and once he heard the crack he looked outside and the tree had collapsed and the ground started to sink," he said.
"So it was pretty quick and pretty sudden and it was dirt spraying up from in his backyard all over his trampoline and the ground just started to erode and disappear."
Engineers have been called in to assess a three metre deep sinkhole which opened without warning. (ABC News: George Davis)

Ms Birch said the innovative project was an excellent, relatively inexpensive solution

Ms Birch said the school would be introducing new items into the shop
which supported the Department of Education’s new uniform policy

High net worth capital is pouring into pub real estate
including many venues in regional locations
an easing in restrictions and record low interest rates
The acquisition of the Art Deco Illawong Hotel was via a syndicate comprising Laundy Hotels
Mr Laundy’s daughter Justine Tindall and her husband Nick Tindall
Nick Butler and Steve Pursell from Pub Brokers & Advisory sold the hotel as a freehold going concern
The property’s freehold was offered by Janice and Kenneth Harper and the business interests by operator Daniel Simpson
The Illawong Hotel is the only pub in the coastal town of Evans Head
which lies an hour south of Byron Bay and 30 minutes from Ballina Airport
18 accommodation rooms and an attached retail store
“We think this is just a sensational coastal hotel in a town that’s already on a great trajectory,” said Mr Tindall
“Justine and I are excited to be partnering with [Sydney Collective]

Picture John VeageWomen's cricket continues to take giant strides in the sporting landscape and Cricket Australia has a great program underway assisting with removing barriers for girls playing cricket in the Sutherland region
The "coloured pants" movement aims to keep young female cricketers on the field by swapping the sport's iconic white trousers with coloured pairs
helping players who have started menstruating feel more comfortable during the game
In the past this wouldn't have been spoken about but with the current advancement of women sport generally everything is being done to even the playing field
girls are less likely to participate in sport than boys
Illawong Menai and Como Jannali's Cricket clubs have jumped at the opportunity
with 40 girls (and growing) taking up the offer to get a pair of coloured pants
thanks to the funding from CommBank Growing Cricket for Girls Fund
Community Cricket and Capability said the Coloured Pants Movement is one of the ways in which we are keeping young players on the field and helping to grow the next generation of Australian women's cricketers
"We're incredibly grateful to CommBank who have provided the resources and funds to implement an initiative that helps girls feel confident and comfortable while playing the game they love
"CommBank has supported women's cricket at all levels for more than 23 years and
the Growing Cricket for Girls Fund has transformed junior cricket by removing barriers and enabling more girls to play our game," he said

Fred Dib was awaiting sentencing for a string of crimes including aggravated break and enter
Link copiedShareShare articleA driver has been charged following the death of a man who police believe was hit by two cars while lying in a road at Illawong in Sydney's south.
Local man Fred Dib was hit in the southbound lanes of Alfords Point Road on Tuesday morning, and later died in hospital.
Detectives have alleged only one driver stopped after the incident.
Kulvir Singh Mahal, a 30-year-old Indian national from Engadine, has been charged with negligent driving causing death and failing to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, or grievous bodily harm.
Singh Mahal faced Sutherland Local Court where he was granted conditional bail.
Mr Dib was treated at the scene for head, stomach and leg injuries, and taken to St George Hospital where he died during surgery.
Police said the 58-year-old male driver of the second car had assisted police and was not being treated as a person of interest.
Detectives said a head injury suffered by Mr Dib was inconsistent with being involved in a car accident and his death was being treated as suspicious.
Mr Dib had been awaiting sentencing for crimes including aggravated break and enter, and resisting police.
Police investigating the events leading up to the incident in Alfords Point Road want to speak to the male driver of a white Pantech truck which stopped briefly at the scene, before the arrival of emergency services.
Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
A post-mortem examination will be carried out today.

We all know Sydney enjoys more than its fair share of truly world-class views
and that’s exactly what you’re getting from this newly built penthouse at the very top of 20 Illawong Avenue
Boasting 360-degree views across the suburb to the glinting waters of the South Pacific Ocean and uninterrupted views inland and over the harbour
this penthouse is the only one of its kind in the area
representing a genuinely rare opportunity to enjoy life closer to the clouds
The penthouse is one of two newly built residences on the top of one of eastern Sydney’s most prized blocks of land
which was initially something of a brutalist apartment building constructed in the late 1960s
The penthouses were added to the building as a part of a major renovation of the entire complex
which saw the addition of ocean-facing balconies to all 78 apartments and resulted in the complete transformation of a once architecturally aggressive design into something that more closely resembles a luxury hotel

The NRL player supported his ex-teacher in a health and well-being scholarship study
Picture suppliedWhen Illawong teacher Ross Montague was chosen to undertake valuable research as part of a scholarship
he knew one of his former students would provide good material
a physical education teacher from Picnic Point High School
recently examined student health and well-being as part of a national scholarship held across five weeks
gathering data from 32 schools across different sectors
was a recipient of the 2023 Hicksons Lawyers Health Education and Well-Being Scholarship
He explored how student health is boosted when children are physically active during recess and lunch breaks at school
"There was a range of factors that impacted the student's level of physical activity and play at school
as well as restrictive school uniform and different cultural beliefs
But the biggest barrier to physical activity at school was the overuse of technology
particularly mobile phones by students," Mr Montague said
"The evidence is clear that students who are physically active during break times at school are more likely to be happier and healthier
Seeing that more school students were experiencing mental health concerns
the teacher sought the advice of Cronulla Sharks Co-Captain Dale Finucane
does important work in promoting positive mental health and well-being
"I did a lot of stuff with the State of Mind with the NRL and there were a few different branches off that as well
including Beyond Blue and Headspace...It was positive to create a conversation around mental health and release the stigma attached to it," he said
the players are perceived as pretty masculine
your emotions and mental health weren't really talked about
but I feel that there's been a shift more recently and people are happy to talk about some of the issues affecting them
"I think it's smart to deliver programs at school about the appropriate use of technology
Educating parents is also important about the lack of sleep which can affect student's concentration at school and their ability to do their work
I want to leave as much social media out of it as best I can...I want to show my kids the benefits of being fit and active in the park
as opposed to being on your phone and being inactive"
Mr Montague presented his findings at the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) Conference in Melbourne
"It's important that we continue to share knowledge and resources as teachers so that we can achieve the best possible outcomes for all of our students," he said
"By highlighting the importance of play and physical activity
it is hoped that schools can work in conjunction with parents to promote the life-long benefits of physical activity
which will greatly improve the chances of positive mental health and wellbeing for our young people."

Ms Petinos said three schools in her electorate - Illawong Public School
Gymea Technology High School and Bonnet Bay Public School - were successful in receiving grants as part of the student-led program that aims to improve school environments
"The Sustainable Schools Grants will empower students and school communities to implement projects that will benefit the environment by helping to save energy or water
"I am pleased that Illawong Public School will receive $15,000 for its 'From Pump to Produce to Plate' project
The grant will facilitate the installation of pumps

Gymea Technology High School will receive $13,110 for its 'Sustainable Propagation Project'
which will provide Science and TAS students with greenhouse facilities for hands-on learning experiences
Bonnet Bay Public School will receive $7860 for its 'Bee Plus!' project to increase the numbers of native bees in the school and local area
"I very much look forward to seeing these wonderful projects come to life in the coming months," Ms Petinos said
Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said 194 NSW public schools received Sustainable Schools Grants ranging from $1000 to $15,000 each for innovative sustainability projects ranging from kitchen gardens to water storage strategies
the event featured a very relaxed atmosphere with plenty of room to move
lots of activities for children and an appealing stage show
Many of the people to whom the Leader spoke said the Cronulla celebration was “too big” and not that good for young children
Cronulla couple Kate and Matrt Faglioni attended the Illawong event specifically so their son Jake

A Laundy-Tindall-Short partnership has furthered their NSW north coast footprint with acquisition of the re-stapled Illawong Hotel of Evans Head
Nick Tindall and wife Justine (nee Laundy)
had been actively eyeing traditional pub offerings outside the wider Sydney area
underpinned by strong land holdings and key metrics
The Art-Deco Illawong is the only pub in the burgeoning coastal town of Evans Head
with the scale to welcome the influx of visitors when the population in the area more than doubles in peak periods
In recent times the business has been in the hands of Daniel Simpson
tenant to the long-term private freehold owners
Despite having five years left on his term
Simpson recognised the opportunity in sale of the packaged freehold going concern
“I’ve loved my time at the Illawong and have enjoyed overseeing the expansion of the business during my tenure,” he says
with residential and commercial developments set to boost population and activity
I wish the new owners all the best and look forward to seeing the next phase of the hotel’s evolution.”
Last month news broke of a partnership between the Laundys and Fraser Short to buy the Lennox Head Hotel
The $40 million paid took into account the potential to be had arising from plans by Short
Evans Head is a coastal town of nearly 3,000 residents
around 70 kilometres south of Byron Bay or 50 from Lennox Head
Opposite the pub is one of two very large caravan parks in the town
blessed with the seclusion of one road in and out
while only a short trip from Ballina or Byron Bay
and set to benefit from the increased attention in the area.
“I can’t help but think that’s going to push it forward
and Evans Head is one of those that will follow suit,” he suggests
The Tindalls took their interest in Illawong to loyal patriarch Arthur Laundy
Fraser Short was also considered as a partner
bringing further economies of scale to the growing Laundy and Short portfolios in the northern rivers region
the new owners see plenty of opportunity in the trend toward strong pub accommodation offerings outside the cities
and potential in the food offering to thousands of locals and tourists
Tindall says they will focus on tuning in to the new breed of caravan parkers
while ensuring the locals have a pub they’re proud to visit.
Tindall Hotels is excited to welcome another addition to its slice of the industry pie
in a deal sources close to the action say was approaching $15 million
with an extended settlement as the tenant bids farewell to the business
“Justine and I both spent quite a bit of time kicking this over the line,” says the new owner
“We think this is just a sensational coastal hotel in a town that’s already on a great trajectory
“While we see potential for growth by unleashing the efficiencies of our network
we’re not going to make any massive changes to the hotel or its operation
Fraser Short and the amazing team at Sydney Collective have a great eye for detail
so adding a little of that polish will be all that the locals will notice.”
The packaged deal was managed by Pub Brokers & Advisory’s Nick Butler and Steve Pursell
who are happy to be riding the wave of north coast assets and be part of a family legacy handover
“Balancing the interests of a leaseholder and freehold owner was made far easier by their recognition that the whole was greater than the sum of the parts,” says Butler.
“It’s been an important factor for the owners
that the hotel is transitioning to a family that appreciates how important the pub is to the town.”
