Publicans and small business owners searching for something a little different should look no further than the historic Inglewood Inn and its resident ghost
the Inglewood Inn operates as a restaurant
Current owners Peter and Polly Howell have operated the venue for the past 16 years – and owned the Wellington Hotel in North Adelaide for 19 years prior to that – but have listed the freehold property and the business for sale to retire
Langfords Hotel Brokers managing director John Langford said
confirming the Howells would keep the business open until it could be sold
Existing wedding and function bookings will not be impacted by the sale
But it is the ghostly apparition of Wilhelmina that might further pique the interest of prospective buyers
Local legend suggests Wilhelmina’s spirit walks the inn – her family were former owners and her heartbroken spirit returned to the property to mourn the death of her son

Mr Langford said it was a good story but remained dubious it was true
despite staff claiming to have encountered the so-called friendly but mischievous ghost
“Pretty much every pub allegedly has a ghost
Sometimes they appear but sometimes they can’t be bothered because they’re too lazy,’’ he said
“It creates a bit of interest but I’ve never had a ghost encounter there so I guess I’ve missed out.’’
which in recent years has become a popular wedding and reception venue
features about 4ha of magnificent Adelaide Hills gardens alongside the meandering Para River
The original bar and former dining room are full of character and ambience
while major renovations in 2012 saw the addition of a balcony restaurant
Venue manager Milly Howell said there was no rush with the sale because her family was keen to find the right next custodian
“Dad’s been in the industry since he was born and I’ve followed suit as a third generation publican,” she said
“It’s been wonderful taking what my parents built
renovated and cultivated into what it is today as a family team
“Weddings are such a draw card for the venue with ceremonies in the garden
It’s such a special hidden gem and I’m in no rush to leave.”
The Inn has established itself as a popular wedding venue
There are also a number of cosy pockets within the venue
Mr Langford said up to 16 would-be hoteliers had shown strong interest in the 1857 sandstone inn since it hit the market but securing a loan to facilitate the purchase was tricky
Many of the interested buyers had no previous experience operating a hotel or function centre and financiers were understandably reluctant to loan them money
“If they were high profile publicans they would have no trouble borrowing money but for the average person
who has a desire for self-employment and to advance themselves in life
the banks are just not interested,’’ Mr Langford said
“The Inglewood Inn is a highly desirable venue
it’s sensibly priced and it’s certainly been very profitable
“(The obstacles to selling) are frustrating but I understand it
“This will have to go to a second-or third-time publican so that the banks are not adverse to approving funding.’’

Screaming and aggressive behaviour is the new nightly normal
from a social housing complex on Ninth Avenue in Inglewood
The block of 24 apartments was purchased by the state government and turned into social housing last year
Now locals are demanding the government step in and evict a group of problem tenants and fear the issues will be repeated at a nearby location
“There are a tiny minority of problematic tenants who behave outrageously
[who] make life hell for their neighbours,” Police Minister Reece Whitby said
“They need to know [that] they can and will be evicted.”
Residents say there have been 300 police call-outs since the complex opened mid last year
“A young woman I know who was on her way to work was bashed outside these units recently,” one local told 9News Perth
just 750 metres from the Ninth Avenue complex
is also slated to become a four-storey social housing building
The state government says it will be for seniors only
but residents fear that rule is not set in stone
They have started a petition to try and keep it restricted to 55 and older
“I thought I was buying in a nice safe neighbourhood,” one resident told 9News Perth
“I spent more money to do that and this is what I’m dealing with every day.”
Last year a local business owner raised the issue at a City of Stirling council meeting
and have been terrorised by the public housing residents and their visitors for the past several months
“I believe this whole situation would have been avoided by making the complex of mixed tenure
It’s 100 per cent state housing and the disastrous effects on the community are glaringly obvious.”
A Department of Communities spokesperson said the department was aware of community concerns relating to a small number of tenancies at 157 Ninth Avenue in Inglewood and “is working with WA Police and the City of Stirling to address concerns”
“Communities takes complaints regarding tenancy matters seriously and undertakes investigations
“Where any tenancy breaches are corroborated
the department will take appropriate action
“The decision to terminate a tenancy agreement ultimately sits with the magistrate
who will only grant an order for vacant possession if satisfied that there has been a breach of the tenancy agreement
and that the tenant has been given every opportunity to rectify the breach and has failed to do so.”
The spokesperson said any “alleged criminal matters - regardless of where they take place - are matters for WA Police” and advised concerned residents to report any suspected criminal activity to police

Dees, of Inglewood, was fatally shot around 12:40 a.m. Nov. 17, 2024, in the 2000 block of West Century Boulevard. She was driving her white Mercedes Benz west on Century Boulevard when she was struck in the head by gunfire, apparently fired from inside a SUV.
Dees' car continued west after the shooting and crashed into a concrete staircase in an alley south of Century and South Gramercy Place. Dees, a nursing student, was found inside the car and died at the scene.

The Inglewood Police Department responded to a call reporting a shooting at 8911 Aviation Blvd. at 3:39 p.m. Two women were taken to a trauma center in Long Beach in critical condition, a spokesperson for the L.A. County Fire Department said.
Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. said that a male suspect was taken into custody in Koreatown around 5:45 p.m. The Los Angeles Police Department made the arrest after police in Inglewood shared a description of the suspect’s license plate and vehicle with partner agencies, he said.
The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, is believed to be a former employee, Butts said. The man was reportedly wearing clothing that resembled a security guard’s uniform and was armed with a rifle, he said.
Both women were employees at the college, but their specific roles and what led to the shooting was not clear.
“The crime motive was related to the employment at the school,” said Butts, a 19-year veteran of the Inglewood Police Department. “It was not a random act of violence.”
A 9mm shell casing was recovered from the campus, he said.
“Situations like this are very jarring for a community because it promotes a sense of randomness and threatens safety,” Butts said. “This is a college campus; you see no reason that there would be this type of crime at school.”
Police spent more than an hour going from room to room on the campus in search of a suspect or additional victims, but did not find anyone, authorities said. Inglewood police said they cleared the campus about 5:15 p.m.
A student at the school told ABC7 News that he and his classmates were told to shelter inside a campus building for about 90 minutes.
“Everybody kind of got terrified at once and I just feel like we really couldn’t panic,” he told the station. “We really had to just kind of stay cool and the police were here to do their job and we just didn’t want to intervene, so I hope everybody that was involved is safe.”
Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology’s Inglewood campus is a trade school specializing in aviation maintenance education. Located a mile from Los Angeles International Airport, the campus offers an 18-month diploma and a 22-month associate degree to teach students how to repair and overhaul aircraft components and systems in preparation for Federal Aviation Authority certification exams.
Campus President Christopher Becker told ABC7 that there is 24/7 security on campus and regular safety drills, fire drills and earthquake drills.
“We’re an aviation school, so safety is one of the things that we focus on the most,” Becker told the outlet. “It’s a nice community of students and teachers and staff. We all get along really well, care about one another deeply and so this is hard on all of us.”

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Two female employees of a Southern California technical college were shot on campus Friday and taken to the hospital in an incident that authorities attributed to workplace violence.
The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. in an office at the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology campus in Inglewood, where Mayor James Butts said the suspect was believed to be a former employee.
Aerial TV video showed a heavy police presence outside the campus in the city, which abuts Los Angeles to the southwest.
One of the victims was in critical condition, Butts said. The Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed on the social platform X that two people were taken to the hospital.
A person was taken into custody after initially leaving the scene, Butts said.
The Los Angeles Police Department said officers detained a male subject from a car matching the description of a vehicle linked to the shooting, which had been sent to local law enforcement agencies by the Inglewood Police Department. The Inglewood police did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
The school went on lockdown for at least an hour after the shooting.
Becker told KABC-TV that the campus is patrolled regularly and, as an aviation school, safety is one of its primary focuses.
“It’s a peaceful campus,” Becker said. “It’s a nice community of students and teachers and staff.”
The Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology has campuses across the country. The college's Inglewood location, about a mile from the Los Angeles International Airport, accommodates 500 students and offers training programs focused on aviation maintenance technology, according to its website.

The city council approved a new phased approach to its Transit Connector project that will instead emphasize new bus lanes ahead of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles

Inglewood is an incorporated city within the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area
In revising its plan, the city council approved a new, $34 million contract with Tutor Perini-led Elevate Inglewood Partners
“This updated and phased approach to the ITC is our response to what we’ve heard: a desire for traffic relief and improved quality of life
and a revitalized downtown reflecting Inglewood’s existing vibrant culture,” Butts said in the release
The phased approach will leave open the possibility of continuing to move forward with the people mover after the Olympics
Last July, the city named Elevate Inglewood Partners as the best value proposer for the originally envisioned $2.4 billion
In addition to Los Angeles-based Tutor Perini
the public-private consortium includes equity member Plenary Americas US Holdings; lead designer Parsons; automated transit system operator Woojin Industrial Systems; and operations and maintenance contractor Alternate Concepts
Tutor Perini didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the new phased approach
The automated people mover aspect of the job was effectively killed last fall
The original plan had already been awarded $1 billion in federal funds during the Biden administration. But the future of those funds is now unclear amid the Trump administration canceling previously awarded grants for other transit projects nationally, according to news channel KTLA 5.

featured the naming of the brigade’s two trucks
Inglewood Fire Brigade Captain Andrew Smith said the event was a fitting tribute to all past and present members who have served the community since 1864.
“It’s hard to put into words what the 160th anniversary means to the town
and the celebrations certainly lived up to expectations,” Andrew said.
“Recognising the contributions of Joe and Brian was a highlight for us all.”
A particularly poignant moment came when the family of former member David Dowler accepted his CFA life membership on his behalf.
who dedicated a combined 32 years of service to the Inglewood and Maldon fire brigades
sadly passed away shortly before the event.
“Dave was always first to the station when the pager went
and first to put up his hand for strike team duties,” Andrew said.
“He has been an integral part of the Inglewood brigade for several years and his sudden passing has affected the entire team.
“Dave’s guidance and sense of humour will be sadly missed.
“We were privileged to have members of Dave’s family attend our 160th celebration.”
Additional recognition included CFA life memberships for John Little (35 years) and David Patterson (30 years)
ranging from five-year certificates to 50-year medals
who has been with the brigade for 18 years and served as captain for eight
expressed his pride in leading the brigade through such a significant occasion.
“It’s an honour to lead the brigade at such an important time in its history,” he said.
“Living in a small country town and being part of the CFA is about giving back to the community.”
following a meeting of 150 locals at the Royal Hotel in Inglewood
the brigade operated from its Grant Street station for 154 years before moving to a new station on Southey Street in 2019.
“We’ve been fortunate to move into a brand new station
and we’ve recently added a new heavy tanker,” Andrew said
but the new facility is a huge boost.”
Inglewood itself was devastated by a fire in 1862
The townspeople managed to stop the fire by tearing down buildings and ferrying water from a nearby dam

CFA District 20 commander Bryan Suckling said the fire had caused extensive damage and the building would likely be condemned.
"The structure is very unsound at the moment and has caused us some challenges in getting inside the building to properly extinguish it," he said.
The historic W Jennings store following a fire on August 29. Picture By Brodie Everist As of 5:30pm, firefighters had not fully extinguished the fire as the building was not safe to enter.
Mr Suckling said initial reports had suggested people were inside the building during the fire, however nobody had been injured.
Volunteer brigades were first on the scene and began dousing the fire at the back of the property.
They were assisted by Bendigo FRV, who supplied specialist equipment including a ladder platform and extra air cylinders.
Mr Suckling expected Brooke Street to reopen around midnight.
Store owner David Oakley said he was outside the building, near Storm Lane, when the fire was believed to have started.
He was walking back to the store when he saw smoke.
FRV and CFA members attended the Brooke Street fire. Picture by Brodie Everist He entered the back of the building, went to the fire door and while holding his breath he quickly opened and closed the door.
Mr Oakley said nobody was in the store at the time of the fire, which he believed was started by a sealed stove.
He said his chickens and Maremma dog all survived the blaze, and the chickens are still for sale.
Mr Oakley thanked the CFA and police for attending the fire.
According to Mr Oakley, the building dates back to at least 1864, when it sold groceries, wine and spirits, saddles and other goods.
However, Mr Oakley said a glass-fronted confectionary tin he found at the store suggests the original business was operating as early as 1859.
In more recent times he store has sold chickens, stock feed and pet food.
