led a Spanish 1-2 ahead of rising star Ángel Piqueras with Australia’s Joel Kelso delivering a mature and hard-fought ride to a well-deserved podium Rueda rocketed off the line to seize the holeshot while Kelso initially made a strong getaway but was shuffled back in the opening corners by Piqueras and Ángel Carpe and later lost further ground to Taiyo Furusato on lap one Drama soon followed when David Muñoz and two others crashed at Turn 6 Kelso methodically fought back through the field and setting the fastest lap as he closed in on the leaders Rueda and Piqueras threatened to break away Kelso’s relentless form continued as he set three consecutive fastest laps breaking the existing race lap record in the process His mature and composed riding saw him first dispatch Carpe for third solidifying his place firmly in the fight for the win The top three soon pulled a sizable gap from the chasing pack while his key challengers — Kelso and Piqueras — were on harder rears setting the stage for a gripping tactical battle he stretched his lead to half a second by lap 12 setting fastest lap after fastest lap and stretching the margin to over three seconds by lap 16 Kelso and Piqueras entered a fierce duel for second Piqueras made several moves in the dying stages – diving under Kelso at the final turn and then again at Turn 6 – but the Australian fought hard the Spanish rookie made his decisive move stick securing second in front of the raucous home crowd securing another podium and solidifying his third place in the world championship standings consistent form has confirmed the Darwin rider as a genuine title contender in 2024 Another Australian standout was Jacob Roulstone who overcame a long-lap penalty to finish inside the top 10 a gutsy effort on the track where he fractured vertebrae in pre-season testing who controlled the race with ruthless efficiency He managed his tyres perfectly and opened the taps when it mattered most in what was also the largest ever dry-race Moto3 winning margin at Jerez A triumphant day for Spain’s young guns — but equally a statement ride from Australia’s rising stars Jose Antonio Rueda now leads the standings with Australian riders shone brightly during qualifying at the Spanish Grand Prix, with front-row starts secured in both Moto2 and Moto3 classes. In Moto2, New South Wales talent Senna Agius delivered a standout performance to qualify third aboard his Kalex machine with a time of 1’39.926. Agius will start from the front row alongside pole-sitter Manuel Gonzalez (Kalex), who clocked a 1’39.858, and Albert Arenas (Kalex) in second with a 1’39.890. Agius continues to impress in 2025, showing race-winning potential heading into Sunday’s showdown. Fellow Australian Jacob Roulstone also impressed, qualifying in eighth position with a time of 1’44.524 in Moto3 at the circuit he damaged his spine at in pre season testing. Riding for KTM, Roulstone continues to build momentum in his come back from injury, and this his best starting positing at the Jerez circuit. It was a stellar weekend for our lads in the lower classes, with Agius and Kelso bagging podiums, Roulstone scoring a top 10, and rising star Carter Thompson bringing home his first Red Bull Rookies win despite serving a long lap penalty I was feeling strong, even though Morbidelli hit me at the last corner and again at Turn 1. Agius returned to the podium with a gritty performance at Jerez for the Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact Moto2 team, catching and then passing Brazilian Diogo Moreira after a fierce battle that saw heavy contact between the two on the second-last lap. Agius jumps to 7th in the Moto2 standings with this result, equal on points with Deniz Öncü in 6th. Kelso backed up his 2nd place at COTA and 4th at Qatar with yet another strong result, placing 3rd for the Level Up – MTA Moto3 squad after a mature ride where he steadily worked his way up the order after losing positions from 2nd on the grid on the first lap. The Queenslander sits 3rd in the overall Moto3 championship standings with 57 points, behind Piqueras on 87 and Rueda on 91. Not a huge margin, given anything can happen in this closely fought category. Roulstone’s top-ten finish for the Red Bull KTM Tech3 Moto3 team was a remarkable effort, given this was the venue where he suffered a potentially career-threatening spinal injury during pre-season testing. He also had to overcome a long-lap penalty on lap 3, fighting his way back up the order from 14th place. The strong result bodes well for the rest of the season for the young New South Welshman. Jacob Roulstone (Moto3, P9) – “To finish P9 after a long lap penalty and a terrible first 2 laps, I’ll take the points. Suffered again with the start and the first laps just not clicking. But then closed a 3 second gap after completing the long lap. Quite pleased with how this weekend went. Feeling more and more back to where I was the end of last year and closer to where I know I belong. Now a weekend off and racing for the teams home GP in LeMans France in two weeks time.” In many ways this is a make-or-break year for Kelso. The 21-year-old enjoyed his best ever campaign in 2024, scoring a maiden pole position and becoming a regular top-six contender in the second part of the year. Now entering his fourth Moto3 season and with an eye on stepping up to Moto2 next year, Joel knows it’s time to start delivering podiums – results which he feels are more than achievable with new team LEVELUP-MTA KTM. What are your first impressions of your new team so far? It’s never easy meeting a new crew and making a fresh start. But I have a good relationship with Alessando Tonucci, who was part of the first team I joined in Europe. I feel I’m at home. We’re slowly making steps forward and understanding each other each. You had a fantastic preseason, and were second fastest at Jerez… Portugal is hard to say because I’m fast there no matter what. But Jerez hasn’t been a strong track for us. A lot of it’s down to a good preseason. I did a lot more training on motocross bikes and the Superbike. Not many Moto3 riders train on a bigger bike. This helped. We’re in a good place physically and mentally. We’re ready to rock and roll this year. How have you addressed your weak points from last year? One weakness was the grip on the rear tyre. We just struggled to get the bike turned without the grip. Training on the BMW Superbike, with a couple of hundred horsepower under you, spinning that rear tyre around the last corner of Phillip Island has helped. To get a Superbike turned you’ve got to be sliding and I’ve just been getting comfortable to that situation, and adapting how I ride when the tyre drops. Is your KTM similar to what you rode last year? We started off with the base setting of last year’s riders (in MTA). It was difficult at the beginning. Then we slowly went in the direction of what works for my riding style, which was similar to mine last year. It almost feels the same as last year now. The bike hasn’t changed – only little components are different. I like the bike set up for hard braking and being comfortable with the front. After a few days the bike is like that now. We’re in a good place. What goals have you set yourself for this season? Who do you rate as your main challengers for this year’s fight? Hard to say. There are a couple of riders who are always fast but then we start racing and they’re not. I don’t really look too much at testing. OK, I finished P2 in Jerez but it was more important to be feeling good on the bike. Piqueras is strong. Rueda is strong. But there are others. You moved from Mallorca to Barcelona last year. Will you continue to base yourself in the Catalan capital? I’m still living in Barcelona. But we’re going to spend more time in Australia this year. We’ve got a better set-up there now. The guy who organises all my training, Jake, owns the Superbike and motocross bikes. Nothing’s like home. We’ll go back in the summer break and have two bases: Melbourne and Barcelona. The Italian fended off Stefano Nepa (Honda), who was just 0.082s behind, while Jose Antonio Rueda (KTM) completed the front row, a mere 0.096s off pole. Scott Ogden (KTM) secured fourth place, narrowly missing out on a front-row start, while Luca Lunetta (Honda) rounded out the top five. Alvaro Carpe (KTM) took sixth, keeping the front two rows closely packed. With less than half a second covering the top 10 riders, the grid is set for a highly competitive 19-lap battle over 86.526 km in Buriram’s scorching heat. The former Rookie of the Year battled fiercely with Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing), emerging victorious just before the checkered flag. Behind the rostrum action, Joel Kelso carved his way through the pack to salvage an impressive eighth-place finish. Joel Kelso, starting from 8th on the grid, initially held his position well in the tightly packed group, running inside the top ten in the first few laps. After being forced to take two Long Lap penalties though, the Australian dropped as low as 21st by Lap 5, putting his chances of a strong finish in serious doubt. Despite the setback, he mounted a determined fightback, picking off riders one by one as the race progressed. At the front, Matteo Bertelle (LEVELUP MTA Team) looked to have a gap in the closing stages, but Piqueras began his charge with less than half a lap to go, diving past Bertelle at Turn 7. The Spaniard’s aggression saw Rueda squeeze through at Turn 9, but Piqueras wasn’t done yet – a move at Turn 12 saw him reclaim the lead, with Fernandez also slipping past Rueda to secure P2. Kelso had pace to equal the race leaders, which saw him claw his way back in touch with the top 10, before his progress was thwarted by increasingly aggressive battles as riders jostled for position. Kelso kept his nose clean to cross the line in eighth, frustratingly less than 2 seconds behind the leader at the finish. Rueda’s podium keeps in in the championship lead with 41 points, 5 in front of Fernandez. Carpe’s DNF drops him out of the top three, while Piqueras’ impressive win vaults him into third place. Penalties in the opening two rounds have disguised Kelso’s true potential so far in 2025, but his strong fightbacks bode well for coming races. For Joel Kelso, the Australian Grand Prix was more than just another race—it was a homecoming. The 20-year-old CFMOTO rider approached the weekend with a potent mix of determination and local knowledge, setting the stage for what would become a career-defining performance. Kelso's weekend began promisingly, with competitive times during Friday's sessions under unexpectedly warm conditions. As the weather deteriorated, Kelso's resolve only strengthened. In Saturday's qualifying, he secured a front-row start with an impressive second place, eschewing the slipstreaming tactics favoured by many of his competitors. Race day dawned with ominous skies and punishing winds, halving the temperatures from Friday's sessions. Undeterred by the extreme conditions, Kelso launched into a 21-lap battle at the front of the pack. His tenacity and skill in the treacherous conditions kept him in podium contention throughout the race. A minor mistake with seven laps remaining cost Kelso his shot at victory, but the young Australian maintained his composure. Crossing the finish line in third place, Kelso secured not only his first Grand Prix podium but also CFMOTO's second world championship race trophy. This achievement marks the first time in a decade that an Australian has stood on the Moto3 podium at Phillip Island. The Guru by Gryfyn Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2023 will be remembered not just for its wild weather, but for the emergence of Joel Kelso as a podium contender and CFMOTO's continued ascent in Grand Prix racing. Jaxon Evans, Elliott Schutte come away with early points lead as new GTWC Australia season kicks off… Ferrari squad Arise Racing GT opened its GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS campaign with a victory in last weekend’s Phillip Island opener, as the Kelso Electrical-backed Melbourne Performance Centre Audi also tasted success. Jaxon Evans and Elliott Schutte took a lights-to-flag win in their No. 26 Ferrari 296 GT3 in Saturday’s first race of the weekend, while it was the turn of Brad Schumacher and Broc Feeney in the No. 888 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II to shine in Sunday’s finale. The grid for the Phillip Island double-header was reduced by two cars before the weekend had started with the withdrawal of the KMB Motorsport Bentley Continental GT3 and the Trophy Class-entered MPC Audi, while the 111 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo failed to start either race, further cutting the field to 15 cars. It had been Volante Rosso’s Aston Martin Vantage GT3 that scored the first pole of the new season, only for reigning champion Liam Talbot and his new teammate Declan Fraser to be excluded from qualifying for a technical infringement. That promoted the No. 26 Arise Ferrari to the top spot, and Schutte held the lead throughout the opening stint, despite briefly losing out to Sergio Pires in the No. 55 Tigani Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo on the opening lap. With almost the entire field completing their mandatory pit stops together, Evans maintained the No. 26 car’s lead when he took over from Schutte, with the Kelso MPC Audi of Feeney — taking over from Schumacher — leaping to second. However, the driver on the move in the second stint was Jayden Ojeda, who ran sixth in the No. 55 Tigani Mercedes-AMG started by Paul Lucchitti. Ojeda soon made his way up to fourth place and passed Alex Peroni’s Team BRM Audi, which was carrying a penalty for a pit stop infringement, for third before repeating the trick on Feeney in the Kelso MPC Audi with eight minutes to go. As the Tigani Mercedes-AMG applied the pressure, Evans would eventually take the checkered flag with just a quarter of a second in hand over Ojeda. Feeney and Schumacher meanwhile lost out on a third-place finish with a last lap puncture, which meant the podium was completed by another MPC Audi, the Dayle ITM-backed No. 7 car of Brendon Leitch and Tim Miles. Peroni had finished third on the road in the Audi started by Mark Rosser, but their 15-second penalty dropped them to seventh. Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific selected driver Dorian Boccolacci claimed pole in the No. 911 EMA Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 R for Sunday’s second race, but an illegal start propelled Peroni’s BRM Audi into an early lead. The offense landed Peroni a five-second penalty, but he and Boccolacci were able to gap the rest of the field in the first half of the race as Evans and Ojeda embarked on a fierce duel for third place in a reprise of the fight for the win on Saturday. By the time Ojeda finally managed to clear Evans, however, the Mercedes-AMG Junior Driver was almost nine seconds away from the lead. Rosser maintained the lead through the mandatory pit stops, but a slow changeover from Boccolacci to Shane Smollen cost the EMA Porsche ground, with the Arise Ferrari and Tigani Mercedes-AMG serving penalties for their Saturday success. All of that meant it was Schumacher, whose co-driver Feeney had run seventh in the opening stint, that emerged as Rosser’s nearest rival, and the Kelso MPC Audi inherited the lead when Rosser served a drive-through penalty for a pit stop infraction. There was late drama as rain hit Phillip Island in the closing minutes, with Schumacher holding a charging Talbot, who had climbed all the way from 10th in the Volante Rosso Aston Martin to second, at bay by just under eight tenths of a second. Schutte brought home the Arise Ferrari third in the increasingly treacherous conditions with a late pass on the Tigani Mercedes-AMG of Pires. Despite picking up a penalty for Miles tipping Lucchitti’s Mercedes-AMG into a spin shortly after the pit stops, the MPC Audi of Miles and Leitch completed the top five. The BRM Audi was finally not classified as Rosser spun into the gravel late on, while the EMA Porsche was classified 11th after Smollen picked up a right-rear puncture. Evans and Schutte enjoy an early championship lead on 41 points ahead of Talbot and Fraser, who were fifth in Race 1, on 28 points and Schumacher and Feeney on 27. Am class honors were shared by the No. 16 Black Wolf Motorsport Mercedes-AMG of Ben Schoots and Shane Woodman and the OnlyFans MPC Audi of Rene Gracie, who lost the chance of a double victory with a penalty in Saturday’s opener.
