the subject of horrific stories of mistreatment
which had previously pledged to shut the centre by the end of 2024
later said it would be closed in 2026 once replacement facilities had been established
Minister for Children Roger Jaensch says the centre can't close until a new one is up and running
that date was pushed back to early 2028 as part of the release of a master plan for the construction of a more therapeutic centre north of Hobart
"We cannot (close the centre) before we have a new functional detention facility," Minister for Children and Youth Roger Jaensch told reporters
"We believe … we can see the new facility built before the end of 2027 and then the closure of Ashley shortly thereafter."
Labor opposition MP Sarah Lovell said there was no clear plan for what would happen in the meantime
"The (inquiry) made it crystal clear: Ashley must close as soon as possible," she said
"Community safety is directly linked to effective
we are failing both the young people in the system and the communities they return to."
A master plan for a new facility has been released but it won't be built before the end of 2027
(Ethan James/AAP PHOTOS)A parliament committee was last week told the government was investigating recent complaints from detainees about the use of isolation and restraints
Mr Jaensch acknowledged Ashley had not produced good outcomes for young people and hadn't reduced re-offending
the state government was providing diversionary programs for young people and the centre was safer than ever before
"We're not seeing an increase in reports of sexual abuse
although we leave the channels open for anyone with concerns to report them
there hasn't been a recent concern raised about recent sexual abuse matters at Ashley Youth Detention Centre."
The new centre will have 16 residential beds
plus two for new arrivals and two medical beds

local government has a major impact on daily life
It's the most direct level of government to influence - and right now is a crucial time to get involved
On council's Your Say Macleay website there is a section dedicated to the suite of planning documents currently on public exhibition
The Delivery program 2025 - 2029 outlines council's priorities for this term
setting a clear roadmap towards the long-term goals identified by the community
Achieving genuine representation in community engagement remains one of the biggest challenges for councillors and council staff

with major investment into sewer and water infrastructure
and the workforce management plan needed to deliver these outcomes

we've met directly with community and ratepayer groups across the shire to gain important collective feedback on the plans

National Party Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan had organised Senator Price’s visit to the West Kempsey Hotel.
Promotion of the event was posted to social media and on the venue’s website.
But when Dunghutti and Gumbaynggirr woman Lynne Holten arrived, she was told she was not allowed in.
“We saw Pat Conaghan [and] we said we had something to say about how disrespectful it is to bring Jacinta Price on to our Country without contacting the local [Indigenous] community,” Ms Holten told News Of The Area.
“We were then told it’s a private meeting.
“It was never advertised as a private meeting, it was advertised as a public meeting.”
Ms Holten said Senator Price “denigrates Aboriginal people”, citing statements the politician has made publicly about the Stolen Generation and domestic violence in Indigenous communities.
Dunghutti and Biripi woman Cheryl Davis, a lifelong resident of Kempsey, said many of Senator Price’s public statements do not align with the views of the local Indigenous community.
“Hearing a lot of Jacinta Price’s policies and what she believes, this woman does not speak for me and she does not speak for my family.
“To come here to see her and listen to her, and to be told we aren’t allowed in, is downright disrespectful.”
Joanne Smith, the former Vice Chairperson of the Dunghutti Elders Council, told NOTA she believed Senator Price had “sold out” Indigenous Australians over the Voice to Parliament and was also angry at the lack of consultation.
“Jacinta Price showed disrespect by not informing our communities, not seeking permission from the Dunghutti Elders Council or any Elder for that matter to have this meeting on our land.”
Senator Price has been on a tour of the NSW coast this week, visiting National Party and Liberal Party supporters and election candidates in Raymond Terrace, Taree and Port Macquarie.
She was set to appear in the pub alongside Mr Conaghan to “engage with the community, hear their concerns, and share insights on current issues”, according to event promotion.
Police arrived promptly to mediate the situation and the crowd soon dispersed.
Jacinta Price is a Country Liberal Party senator for the Northern Territory and the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs.
She sits with the National Party in the Federal Parliament.
Born in Alice Springs, she has both Indigenous and Anglo-Saxon heritage, and was a leading figure in the successful “No” campaign for the Voice to Parliament referendum.

Lions coach Chris Fagan was thrilled with how his side shut down the Suns' strong midfield and restricted their free-flowing attack as he declared: "We knew tonight we were probably facing the best Gold Coast team we've ever faced."
Three late goals flattered the Suns and helped them narrowly avoid their lowest score in 28 meetings as a QClash record crowd of 33,612 gathered to watch the Lions' 12th win from these teams' past 13 meetings

said on Saturday he will recommend to Berkshire Hathaway's board that Greg Abel should become CEO at the end of the year
"I think the time has arrived where Greg should become the Chief Executive Officer of the company at year end," Buffett said
Abel has been Buffett's designated successor for years and he already manages all of Berkshire's non-insurance businesses
But it was always assumed that he wouldn't take over until after Buffett's death
Previously the 94-year-old investor has always said he had no plans to retire
Buffett announced the news at the end of a five-hour question and answer period and didn't take any questions about it
He said the only board members who knew this was coming were his two children
Many investors have said they believe Abel will do a good job running Berkshire
but it remains to be seen how good he will be at investing Berkshire's cash
Buffett also endorsed him on Saturday by pledging to keep his fortune invested in the company
"I have no intention — zero — of selling one share of Berkshire Hathaway
I will give it away eventually," Buffett said
"The decision to keep every share is an economic decision because I think the prospects of Berkshire will be better under Greg's management than mine."
Thousands of investors in the Omaha arena gave Buffett a prolonged standing ovation after his announcement in recognition of his 60 years leading the company
Buffett earlier warned that US President Donald Trump's tariffs were harmful
Buffett said Trump's trade policies have raised the risk of global instability by angering the rest of the world

Harry has called for the Home Secretary to review the body that authorises protection for senior royals after he lost a Court of Appeal challenge last week over his security arrangements while in the UK
He told the BBC he "can't see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK"
But Wharfe says Harry "has really played the wrong card"
"I don't see how he can expect to get full protection when he arrived back in the UK
when he is no longer a member working the royal family
when he knows that the actual security package comes at the expense of the British taxpayer," he told the PA news agency
The police have seen it - so where's the problem?"
Harry failed in his appeal against the dismissal of his High Court claim against the Home Office
over the decision of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures that he should receive a different degree of protection when in the UK
He told the BBC he can only come to the UK safely if he is invited
and King Charles could help resolve the situation by "stepping aside and allowing the experts to do what is necessary"
that this is a good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up
Harry says the decision "is knowingly putting me and my family in harm's way"
Wharfe said: "With regards to the stitch-up
I think what he should be doing now is actually showing some humility
"If a reconciliation is part of what he wants
then this is hardly the way to go about reconciling the differences that exist within your family."

Volkswagen Golf: PHEV power no closer to AustraliaVolkswagen Golf: PHEV power no closer to Australia"We continue to investigate these things
but for the current Golf if we look at what the customers are after
very clear that they want the quality and practicality aspects of it in the lower end
and of course they want the performance and acceleration in the GTI and R," Mr Nidigallu continued
"We haven't seen a clear marker in our data sets for hybridisation as a priority for [Golf] customers
but it's not top of the list at the moment for this segment
"There are other segments – [like] medium SUV – where electrification is very much desired, and that's why the ID.4 and ID.5 were such a big priority for us
and it's the first step we're taking in that direction
while it is a general interest for customers
it's not on top of the list for Golf buyers at the moment."
In the Golf alone there are two different variations offered abroad: a 150kW in the standard Golf and a 200kW tune in the GTE
with both quoting over 130km of WLTP-certified electric driving range in their latest forms
PHEVs have been a struggle for all of the VW Group in Australia, particularly in the smaller segments, though Cupra offers the Leon and Formentor with plug-in tech
These use the older 1.4-litre PHEV powertrain with less range – in the 50-60km realm – though both models and the incoming Terramar will move to the Golf GTE's 200kW eHybrid system with double the EV range this year
Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles in Australia has made a number of attempts to bring the Golf PHEV Down Under, starting with the Mk7 GTE last decade before backflipping due to high global demand, and more recently the Mk8.5 GTE which was likewise abandoned
Skoda Australia recently confirmed it's planning to bring the mild-hybrid 1.5 eTSI powertrain to the Octavia before the end of this year as a running change to the lineup
the Skoda runs the same 1.4 TSI and eight-speed auto transmission as the Golf
Likewise the aforementioned Cupra Leon and Formentor will offer the 1.5 eTSI and 1.5 TSI eHybrid drivetrains with their incoming facelifts, joined by the larger Terramar SUV which will also get MHEV and PHEV options unlike the related VW Tiguan
Volkswagen Golf: PHEV power no closer to AustraliaDespite VW's stance on demand for electrified small vehicles
the Golf is being outpaced by rivals with varying degrees of electrification on the Australian sales charts
The Hyundai i30 and Toyota Corolla currently outsell the Golf by quite some margin
with the Hyundai offering 48V mild-hybrid and full-hybrid options across its i30 Hatch and Sedan respectively
while the entire Corolla range is hybrid-only as of mid-2024
Further, the all-electric MG 4 hatchback is likewise beating out the Golf in year-to-date volume (1335 v 853) as of March 31
Elsewhere in the small passenger segment, the Mazda 3 has previously offered 24V mild-hybrid tech, though has reverted to ICE-only; and the Honda Civic has gone hybrid-only Down Under

Akubra kicked off celebrations with the release of a limited-edition heritage hat that sold out injust 48 hours.
Kempsey is famously the home of Australian country music icon Slim Dusty AO MBE, and tomark the anniversary Akubra produced 200 now-sold-out limited edition ‘Slim Dusty’ hats – thestyle worn by the local legend and ARIA hall of famer.
Local leaders, Traditional Owners and service providers today enjoyed a sneak peek of thestore, which has been shut since 2019, along with a workshop tour and morning tea.
Akubra CEO Natalie Culina said it was another sign of Akubra’s commitment to itsmanufacturing heart in Kempsey.“We’re so proud to be part of this community and we wanted to make sure there was a genuine connection to locals, and a place that helps Kempsey attract tourists to the region,” Ms Culina said.
“As a major employer for the region, Akubra will continue its focus on creating new jobs andtraining opportunities for future craftspeople because we know that more local manufacturingpositions will help families and this regional community thrive,” she said.
While the 162-step production process remains unchanged, the business has recently investedin new machinery to support production, which will arrive early next year.
Kempsey Mayor Kinne Ring welcomed the return of the Akubra store, noting how proud thecommunity is to host such an iconic Australian brand.
“The Akubra hat is forever linked to Australia, to Slim Dusty and to Kempsey,” Mayor Ring said.
“We are proud to be home to Akubra and it’s wonderful to see the store open again to letAustralians from all over the country visit our shire and see the amazing work done by ourincredible locals.”
Akubra’s origins date back to 1876 when Benjamin Dunkerley established Kensington Hat Millsin Tasmania, and after decades based in Sydney, then owners the Keir family relocated toKempsey in October 1974.

you can't have too many flaws," Scott told reporters on Friday

but I can think of a few teams who are really strong in one area that maybe because of their evolution in their list build
they are quite weak in another - that makes them really vulnerable

It listed the matter under investigation as "registration of interest"
MPs are expected to provide information about any financial interest or benefit they receive which others might reasonably consider to influence their actions or words
"The Chancellor's interests are fully declared and up to date," a spokesperson for Reeves said in a statement
No further details of the allegations against Reeves were provided
in line with the commissioner's usual practice
The fact that an inquiry is taking place does not mean that rules have been broken
The finance ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment
the commissioner could ask her to acknowledge and apologise for the breach or
refer it to a separate committee which can recommend sanctions

All articles from our websiteThe digital version of Today's PaperBreaking news alerts direct to your inboxAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueIlias was not the only one to blame for the Dragons' damaging 46-18 loss to Sydney Roosters on Anzac Day but a change needed to be made to allow him to find some form
A shortened pre-season was one of the reasons Flanagan gave for Ilias being short on belief to start the year; Ilias was still recovering from a serious leg fracture when he signed for the Dragons
But the coach is confident we haven't seen the last of Ilias in the Red V's first-grade team
adding the former South Sydney playmaker's positive approach will boost his quest to return to the starting side
and he just needs to go and find a little bit of form and a bit of confidence," Flanagan said ahead of the Dragons' Magic Round clash with Wests Tigers on Saturday night
no one wants to get dropped but he'll go back and work hard and we'll see him again."
Multiple Dragons underperformed in the Anzac Day thumping; Flanagan hinted some of Ilias' teammates could consider themselves lucky to have held their spots
Lachlan Ilias will need to regain form and confidence to earn a recall
(Mark Evans/AAP PHOTOS)"He (Ilias) was one of many that didn't turn up that day
I just felt that we needed a change," he said
whether it's the right way or the wrong way
Ilias' replacement at halfback is 19-year-old Lyhkan King-Togia
whom Flanagan backed to show composure beyond his years in his return to first grade
who played four NRL games at the end of 2024
announced a two-year contract extension with the Dragons on Tuesday
Flanagan said the new deal would not put any more pressure on the young half than he faced when called up late last year
doesn't get over-excited or show any frustration and he'll handle it really well," Flanagan said
"We had to win footy games to make the finals last year
and you wouldn't have seen any change in Lyhkan's temperament or demeanour going into those games
The coach has big plans for the incoming halfback and believes he could be the young playmaker of the future the Dragons have been searching for
and we've got one we think can take us a little bit further," he said
