Picture by Darren Howe Kennington Primary School's soccer team will take plenty of confidence and a brilliant qualifying record to the state finals in September
Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueThe team has been unstoppable through the divisional and regional rounds
This rampaging team has finally broken through for KPS
which has always had a strong soccer program but struggled to get past the regional stage
The state finals are set for Wednesday
and KPS is preparing to take on some of the state's best
But if their record through the Bendigo divisional competition and then as the Loddon Mallee representative team in the regional finals held in Swan Hill is anything to go by
KPS physical education teacher and team manager Bree Bentley said the team's ability to play as a unit was a big reason for their success
"The boys have trained as a group twice a week for a couple of months now
so they're working really well together and have a great game sense," Bentley said
but considering they all come from different clubs and age groups
they've done a great job forming a cohesive team
"They understand if someone has moved out of position to cover an opposition player
they need to fill that hole so there's a good awareness of where each other are on the pitch."
While Bentley believes they are up for the big challenge
she said they have already made their school proud
and now it's going to be a big challenge going up against some of the metro areas," Bentley said
"But I think they're up for the challenge and will represent our school well
"They have a fun time together and are a good group of kids to take out of school
"They play hard but respect the other teams and referees
The team is a mixture of year five and six students.

Lambeth Council plans to trial a Kennington Triangle Healthy Neighbourhood to reduce road danger
improve air quality and make the area more pleasant as a place to live or work
The council will begin speaking to residents
businesses and other stakeholders over the next month and will use the feedback to produce the initial proposals for the Kennington Triangle Healthy Neighbourhood
The scheme proposal covers the area containing the Imperial War Museum and The Cinema Museum
A trial is expected to be launched later this year for the council to monitor traffic data and gather community feedback before evaluating the overall success of the scheme
The council will be holding a series of ‘Walk and Talks’ in the neighbourhood between now and April 10 where local people and community groups can share their views on the proposals
cabinet member for Clean Air and Sustainable Lambeth
said: “Over the next few weeks the council will be speaking to the community to find out exactly what they want to see as part of this new Healthy Neighbourhood trial
“We want people to tell us what they want improved in their local area as part of this scheme
whether it’s more trees and greenery or reduced road danger
The Kennington Triangle Healthy Neighbourhood will be tailored to the needs of the community
It is aimed at making it safer for walking
scooting and wheeling by reducing vehicle through-traffic and speeds
It will make the use of public space in the neighbourhood fairer for local people
including the majority in Lambeth who do not own a private vehicle
The scheme is an update to Lambeth’s Healthy Streets programme
which uses interventions and public space improvements to help make neighbourhoods safer
The Kennington Triangle Healthy Neighbourhood was put forward after receiving feedback from members of the public on two nearby proposed Healthy Neighbourhoods in Walnut Tree Walk and Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens
Cllr Chowdhury added: “We have come forward with these plans for Kennington Triangle Healthy Neighbourhood after undertaking prioritisation analysis of Lambeth neighbourhoods and listening to the concerns of local people
“We will look to launch a trial to understand the potential for addressing these issues through a scheme like this
“Healthy Neighbourhoods can help rebalance local streets
I look forward to looking at the feedback over the next couple of months and working with the community to come up with designs for the initial trial period.”

Kennington Primary School will have a new kindergarten operating by term one of 2026
a move that will help address tight demand for pre-school places in the city
Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueThe school is set to have one of eight new kinders to be co-located at government schools across the state
Principal Travis Eddy said there was strong local demand for kindergarten places despite the suburb already being served by a kinder
"It's really difficult for people to get a spot that's near their home," he said
"We still have a number of families that live in our catchment whose children go to kinder all over Bendigo."
Mr Eddy also said a kinder onsite would make the school transition programs even smoother
Kennington Primary School principal Travis Eddy (centre) welcomes the new kinder to be located at the school
He said the Victorian School Building Authority is yet to work out the exact location on the site of the kinder
which is understood to be for three and four-year-olds
The capacity of the kinder has also yet to be confirmed
but Mr Eddy said it would be determined by the size of the building
The Bendigo Advertiser contacted the State Government for details on the timeline of the new build and its capacity
but had not received a response by deadline
Kennington is already served by two early learning centres
Shine Bright Kennington and the Helen Jessen Early Learning Centre
There is also a childcare centre near Edwards Street
The chief executive officer of Shine Bright Early Years Manager
who run 40 kindergartens across Central and Northern Victoria
was "extremely supportive" of the new build
"Enrolment volumes are strong in the Bendigo region and this new infrastructure will help support the growing demand in the region and across Victoria broadly," Richie Evans said
He anticipated there would be no changes to Shine Bright Kennington's service due to the new infrastructure
showed enrolments for Bendigo kindergartens had already reached around 90 per cent of capacity for 2025
that's where the pressure and the stress probably is because you've got to be quick to get your spots in terms of getting your kindergarten of choice," he said
"Not everyone will get their first preference
and sometimes they might not even get their second preference."
Mr Evans welcomed the new infrastructure across Bendigo, but said it wouldn't be enough.
"It'll certainly help, but we'll still need more," he said.

Traffic restrictions could be introduced in more streets in Kennington under plans revealed by Lambeth council
Consultation has begun with residents and businesses living in the Kennington Triangle about possible changes to reduce traffic and speeds in roads
The area covered by the proposed scheme includes the Imperial War Museum and the Cinema Museum
After an initial period of consultation finishes in April
the council will draw up detailed plans for any traffic restrictions
They will then come into force through a trial lasting between six and 18 months
During this period data will be collected by the council and compared with pre-trial statistics to monitor how effective any restrictions have been in improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists
include ensuring residents can access their homes when needed and encouraging people to walk and cycle more
Depending on feedback received from residents
the traffic restrictions could then be implemented permanently
“Healthy neighbourhoods can help rebalance local streets

Joan Twelves has run the Kennington Park Community Centre since 2017
Kennington residents are at loggerheads over plans to redevelop two community hubs on their estate
wants to bulldoze a building occupied by a local arts group on the Kennington Park estate and replace it with social housing and new community space
would also see the estate’s adjacent community centre refurbished and a new courtyard created to connect the two buildings
Former Lambeth Council leader Joan Twelves
says the development will give the building a much needed facelift and improve facilities for local people
But the plans have met fierce resistance from Shannon McNab
who runs Oval Arts Depot (OAD) out of the building next door which is due to be demolished under Hyde’s plans
A petition she launched opposing the proposed development has racked up over 1,100 signatures and posters against the plans are stuck up around the estate
which is located next to the Oval cricket ground
Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service last week (December 16)
Joan said she was saddened at the opposition to the scheme
It’s really sad that Shannon does not want to get involved with us
We think it’s important that the community centre is working and running and does not have doors that don’t open and toilets that don’t block
There’s a lot of the building that’s crumbling
“Hyde is investing millions into refurbishing this site
It’s partly because we have been successful that Hyde wants to invest in it [the centre]
However Shannon is concerned at the loss of the OAD as a space to run various clubs and groups
Shannon was unable to speak to the LDRS about her opposition to Hyde’s plans
owing to back-to-back community pantomime shows she has been involved in during the run-up to Christmas
But she directed the LDRS to her petition against the scheme
and a video about a summer party she organised for local kids at the OAD and the community centre this year
she says: “What do you do if you have no place to run a summer club like this
I don’t understand where you’re supposed to go.”
Joan said she had leased the community centre from Hyde since 2017 and raised money from letting the space to local groups
Cash raised through hiring out the building allowed the centre to fund initiatives such as its Monday Lunch Clubs which provide local people with a free hot meal
When the LDRs visited the centre last week
Dominique Marshall — who runs £5 weekly Zumba classes at the centre — was stuck outside the building because the front door had jammed
quickly arrived with a can of WD-40 in hand and was able to force open the door
But in conversation inside the centre later
Joan pointed to the incident as exactly the reason why she supports Hyde’s plans to refurbish the building and redevelop the wider site
But Shannon’s petition calls on Lambeth Council to refuse Hyde’s plans to demolish the OAD
but it also incorrectly states that the housing association intends to demolish the community centre
It goes on to incorrectly say that Hyde proposes to build ‘commercial flats’ on the site
whereas the planning application says the eight planned homes will be at social rents
she describes the potential closure of OAD as a ‘terrible blow to so many people’
adding that many of the kids who attend activities come from families with ‘disrupted home lives’ and living in poverty
Shannon has invested £60,000 of her own cash into the project over her three years occupying the due-to-be-demolished building
Caught in the middle of the women’s disagreement is Alex Wolfenden
who has run coffee stall Sexi Coffi outside the OAD building since 2022
will have to leave the site if Hyde’s plans go ahead
But he said the housing association has suggested he may be able to set up a new cafe on the ground floor of the planned new building when it is finished
Speaking to the LDRS over a flat white last Thursday (December 19)
he said: “I’m trying to stay positive about it
but until I see it in writing I’m not getting my hopes up
If they had come in and said ‘everybody needs to get out’ [it would be different] but they have not
“I know residents aren’t very happy about [the plans] because of the [loss of] light and the building works
Alex added that he had made arrangements to relocate his stall across the road to the Montgomery Hall Community Centre in April
when he is expected to vacate the current site by Hyde
Lambeth Council will make a decision on the housing association’s plans at a yet undisclosed date
building work is expected to begin in 2025
A spokesperson for Hyde said: “Communities are just as important as the homes we build
which is why we’re investing in Kennington Park Community Centre (KPCC)
“KPCC provides vital services for the area
It’s used by community groups including theatre groups
dance classes and for children’s activities and parties
“The design has been part of a thorough consultation process
including a public consultation in March 2024 and collaboration with the trustees of the community centre to refine the design.”
another larger Housing Association “group” in five years time
Another entity with no interest in the estate or maintaining this provision
Lambeth is inviting residents to submit their views on the Neighbourhood Plan for Kennington
which affects the three wards and the southernmost part of the Waterloo & South Bank ward
includes policies seeking to identify and protect open spaces
and local views within the area that are important to the local community
The plan also proposes a series of measures to help improve air quality
The content of the Plan is being consulted at the moment in accordance with Regulation 16 of the Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012
Public consultation will run for a period of six weeks until Monday
residents will be able to view the following key documents:
Hard copies of each of these documents are also available to inspect at:
Representations can be submitted using the online survey or via email to planningpolicy@lambeth.gov.uk
If you decide to submit your representation via email
please state the following in the email’s subject: ‘KOV draft Neighbourhood Plan consultation – Representation’ followed by the name of your organisation or your initials if you are an individual
Council officers will process the representations received and forward them to an independent Examiner
who will be responsible for the running of the next stage in the preparation of the Neighbourhood Plan
The Examiner will take all representations into consideration before deciding whether the Plan can be adopted

a great model of Christian discipleship," Bishop Mackinlay said
"The people of Bendigo and the people throughout the diocese have greatly appreciated your hospitality in sharing your liturgical life with us
"Many people in the community will be very sad to see the three sisters
The time that people have spent visiting you regularly in the parlour has been cherished."
Bishop Mackinlay presented each of the sisters with a memento book
