Kensington and Chelsea has long attracted high-earning workers willing to pay exorbitant housing costs to live in one of London’s most glitzy districts
The so-called Royal Borough and neighbouring Westminster each lost about 4 per cent of their employed residents over the past two years

ShareAs featured in the Melbourne March 2025 hit list. See all stories.Arnold’s wine bar in Kensington, complete with disco ball.Joe Armao13.5/20How we score
The most important ingredient in a certain type of restaurant is heart. I’m not talking about the big, brash group-owned places, though I certainly wouldn’t mind a little more heart here and there in those joints. But when you open a small storefront in a mostly residential neighbourhood that’s out of the way for anyone who doesn’t live there, then heart is essential.
Heart is the attribute that Arnold’s, the wine bar and restaurant across the street from the Kensington train station, has in spades.
Opened in September last year, Arnold’s is the work of chef Scott Eddington and his partner Lauren Chibert. Eddington has worked in Sydney venues including Automata and A1 Canteen, and in North Melbourne at Manze.
On the surface, Arnold’s looks very familiar – the classic Melbourne neighbourhood wine bar. But peek under the cover and you’ll find some distinctive elements that make it an exciting addition to Kensington and to the city.
Oaxaca cocktail.Joe ArmaoThe drinks list isn’t particularly long, but what’s there is varied and considered. There’s a mezcal collection that would intrigue anyone with that particular penchant, from the curious to the obsessed, and a great cocktail made with mezcal, an acid-forward pineapple and mango shrub, and blue curacao that takes the trope of the blue drink and gives it some gravitas.
Wines are predominantly from underrepresented regions, from Gippsland (Eddington’s homeland) to Albania. The staff is super keen to get geeky with you if that’s what you want, or to just recommend something that might suit your tastes.
This is a bar where I left feeling that I’d actually learnt something, which is a rarity – not because I know so much, but because learning at a bar usually takes the form of someone pretentious droning on, and I zone out. Here it was all just good banter.
Mortadella fajitas.Joe ArmaoThe other unusual thing about Arnold’s is the Mexican and South American bent to the food. This is sometimes applied to ingredients you would commonly find on a Euro-influenced wine bar.
There’s mortadella on the menu, but here it’s served as “fajitas” – fried until crispy and then topped with a heaping of sauteed onions and capsicum. There’s a beef tartare, made with wagyu, but it’s dressed with pineapple and chorizo and branded as carne apache, the Mexican beef version of ceviche.
Mexican-style beef tartare with pineapple and chorizo.Joe ArmaoI applaud the chef’s creativity, and again, there is just no question that he’s cooking with heart. But I do think there are places where the menu could use some restraint. The wagyu carne apache doesn’t really need the addition of chorizo – the extra spice and salt distracts from the cool, almost creamy luxury of the high-quality beef.
There’s a beautifully cooked whole Goulburn River trout on the menu right now, its skin crisped perfectly, its flesh soft and supple. But the skin and fried aromatic herbs atop it are so aggressively salted, I struggled to taste the nuance of the fish or the lovely peach and fermented chilli sauce it sat in.
And I’m all for cornbread taking over on Melbourne menus – Arnold’s is the second one I’ve seen recently – but the version here is far too dry.
Fried peppers with chamoy.Joe ArmaoAdvertisementI found myself most enjoying the kitchen’s simplest dishes: a plate of fried heirloom peppers, with a dipping sauce of deeply plummy chamoy, made from pickled fruit; a sweet potato served with labne.
That said, I have no doubt in Eddington’s talent, and his passion is evident. Arnold’s is already a fantastic place to go for a drink and a nibble, and it has enough heart to more than make up for the occasional over-exuberance of the kitchen when it comes to spicing and salting. My money is on it becoming a long-time and well-loved institution.
Atmosphere: Warm and cosy neighbourhood wine bar
Go-to dishes: Oaxaca blast cocktail ($24); mortadella fajitas ($18); fried heirloom peppers ($16)
Drinks: Great selection of mezcals and Australian whisky; fun and eclectic wine list
Cost: About $110 for two, excluding drinks
Gimmick proves golden as Sooshi Mango expands Lygon Street restaurantThe comedy trio add a new level to their nostalgic Italian diner – and they’re not the only Melbourne hospitality operators scaling up on-site.
Doughnuts, ice-cream and nuggets: How this tiny shop puts a creative spin on tofuA small-batch tofu maker is pushing perceptions of the vegetarian staple into new territory, using McDonald’s, low-waste cooking and more for inspiration.

a brand-new build-to-rent development in Melbourne's inner north
offers a fresh alternative to traditional renting
Finding the perfect rental home is about more than just four walls – it’s about security
Build-to-rent is a new term you’ve probably seen around
or third-party real estate agents between you and the landlord
Local: Kensington’s well-connected location opens up the suburb to renters looking for secure, high-quality apartments.
Local also has sites in Box Hill, South Melbourne and Southbank, but Co-CEO Matthew Berg said there’s something special about the Kensington location, which mixes heritage neighbourhood charm and city proximity, and is a suburb which previously offered little in the way of apartment living.
“We fell in love with the area,” Mr. Berg said.
“Kensington Village has this amazing sense of community, with beautiful old red-brick train stations, great cafes, and a bohemian-meets-industrial vibe.
"It’s two stops to the city, surrounded by great parks and is right near the hospital precinct and major universities – it’s a location that has everything.”
Unlike conventional rental properties, Local: Kensington is designed specifically for renters.
The build-to-rent model eliminates the landlord and property manager, offers flexible leasing terms, and gives the tenants the ability to personalise their space.
“What we offer is flexibility and security at the same time," explained Mr. Berg.
Many renters have faced the instability of being asked to move due to owners selling or moving back in.
"Here, residents can live like they own it – with the freedom to personalise their space like paint the walls, but without the risks of traditional renting."
Residents at Local: Kensington can make their apartments their own personalised spaces.
Value for money was an important consideration for the team at Local: Kensington, with apartments starting at $549 per week and including whitegoods and the option to connect to built-in utility providers that offer 100% renewable power and super-fast Wi-Fi, so it’s all ready to go from day one.
To make the move even more appealing, new tenants who apply and move in before 31 March can take advantage of an exclusive rent-free promotion for three months.
This not only entices renters to move in but also benefits those who need more flexibility with their move-in dates.
“We allow prospective residents to secure their apartment with just a $1,000 bond, even if they don’t plan to move for another few months.
"It removes the stress of last-minute leasing decisions, or the pressure to lock in a housemate, something the private rental market just can’t offer,” explained Mr. Berg.
The ability to secure an apartment in advance makes the moving-in process at Local less stressful.
A standout feature of Local: Kensington is its well-designed studio apartments, filling a gap in Melbourne’s rental market.
Traditionally, renters have had limited options between small student accommodation and larger one-bedroom apartments.
Local: Kensington’s 40-square-metre studios offer a smart, affordable alternative, proving especially popular with young professionals and those moving out of share houses for the first time.
“These studios have been incredibly popular,” said Mr. Berg.
“They provide a great entry point for renters who want their own space but still enjoy the social and lifestyle benefits of a build-to-rent community.
"With a full-size kitchen, white goods, and dedicated living areas, they offer everything you need in a smart, efficient design.”
Beyond the apartments themselves, Local: Kensington is about fostering a vibrant community.
Residents have access to a suite of high-end amenities, all thoughtfully positioned on the ground floor to encourage social interaction.
“When someone comes home from work, they naturally pass through the amenity spaces – whether it’s the gym, the games room, or the resident lounge, which creates organic opportunities to connect,” said Mr. Berg.
Outdoor spaces and communal amenities help foster genuine connections between Local residents.
Local: Kensington offers half an acre of communal facilities, including a resort-style outdoor heated pool, fully equipped gym, wellness space, private dining areas, private co-working spaces, a creative studio, a big-screen entertainment room, and even a pet-friendly dog wash, to name a few.
“For many residents, their apartment is just one part of their living experience," explained Mr. Berg.
"We’ve seen renters who originally planned to take a two-bedroom apartment realise they don’t need the extra space because they can use the co-working areas and boardroom areas or book a private dining space for hosting friends, so they are able to save money and take on a one-bedroom or a studio instead."
With fully furnished options available (featuring sustainable, award-winning Koala furniture), the ability to sign up for utilities and Wi-Fi on the spot, and a seamless leasing process, the build-to-rent development is designed for renters who want a stress-free experience.
“People are looking for hyper-convenience,” said Mr. Berg.
“They want to move in with minimal fuss, enjoy a beautifully designed home, and have access to amenities that support their lifestyle.

Nigerian jollof and even spaghetti jollof are on the menu at Jollof Vibe
a West African eatery operating out of a dark shared kitchen in Kensington
It’s a courageous move to build a Melbourne food business around jollof, the tomato-laced rice dish that is the subject of great discussion, debate and delight in West Africa.
Even though this dish has many different variations and is fiercely contested in West African communities, most people here aren’t yet sure if they prefer Ghanaian jollof (jasmine rice and ginger) or Nigerian jollof (spiced and smoky basmati rice) or something else altogether. Evette Quoibia is working to increase awareness of a cult staple while serving delicious dinners.
Attieke jollof (cassava couscous, fried plantain, Ivorian salad and fried fish).Luis Enrique AscuiNow she’s deep in jollof in a dark kitchen in Kensington. Ordering is online, and most orders are takeaway but there are a few tables in the roller-doored garage where it’s possible to have a very casual eat-in dining experience.
Whether you eat here or take food home, you need to make some hard decisions. The true jollof war is between Ghana and Nigeria, so that’s the key face off. Otherwise, there’s spicy Liberian jollof with beans, corn and carrot studding the rice, or the one-pot feast from Senegal, usually considered the birthplace of jollof, with broken rice surrounded by eggplant, cabbage and pumpkin.
Maybe you’d like to try Evette’s own creations. The Wisdom jollof is fried with egg and fresh tomato, and coconut jollof is studded with colourful capsicum, enriched with coconut cream and served with lamb chops. There’s even spaghetti jollof, with pasta subbed in for rice.
Spaghetti jollof.Luis Enrique AscuiThey’re all great: bold, hearty and fortifying. I love the smokiness of the Nigerian jollof, I can never go past spicy spaghetti, and I’m also a fan of attieke jollof, an Evette invention of fried fish served with nutty, satisfying cassava cous cous with tomato and onion.
Puff-puffs are a classic West African street sweet. These small doughnuts are made out the back by Puff Puff King but you can order them directly from Jollof Vibe, too. They come with all kinds of hip flavours – Oreo, Bueno, Nutella – but my favourite is the plain so you can concentrate on the fluffy sweetness. They’re best eaten straight away.
I’m not snobby about takeaway but Jollof Vibe is too good to be hidden in a dark kitchen. The concept is so communal, it’s a shame the eating experience isn’t – or at least, not yet. I’m sure you’ll join me in counting the days until Evette Quoibia has a proper restaurant setting to showcase her excellent food and exuberant energy.

You’re unlikely to stumble upon this outer suburban Turkish diner, but it’s a true findOne Stop Kebab and Cafe has it all: tea and eggs, tradie kebabs and gozleme, and rice pudding and sturdy coffee late into the evening.

the couple knocked down the original dwelling and embarked on a self-driven project to construct a classic-style contemporary home
“The thing we wanted was to have good style and street presence
Trudy says they have always loved the traditional style
“A lot of people stop and take photos of the house and actually ask us how old it is because they think it’s an old house
“The front door has a silver knocker like they do in London with the gold and brass … so
“We’ve built with Winkler many times and we spent hours with him going through what we wanted.”

The master bedroom includes a spacious ensuite and walk-in wardrobe

When asked what their favourite part of the house is
“It feels warm and people would come and visit and never want to leave because it’s very comfortable,” says Trudy
“Probably that aspect is our favourite because at any time of day
you’ve got all the trees from the reserve next to us and then all the trees around Kensington Park Oval behind us
you can see the two tennis courts and you can hear all the cricketers practising in the cricket nets.”
Richard and Trudy have decided the time is right to downsize
Trudy says they will miss the location with its abundant parks the most
where they used to walk their Miniature Schnauzer Ziggy
“We’d go to The Feathers Hotel or Balloboosta and have coffee
we’d go to Tusmore Park and when Ziggy was a puppy
we would take him to the oval every day and he would play with all the other puppies,” says Trudy
Trudy says they will also miss the dwelling’s proximity to their daughters’ school
“It’s such a bonus to be close to the school
and she was in her classroom – that’s how close we are,” says Trudy
“We’d still probably like to build another house and do a version of this one
but maybe a single story and a lot smaller – three bedrooms.”

After years of deliberation, I finally purchased Burberry’s Kensington trench coat
I really have worn it as much as I had hoped
The allure of a good trench coat is that chic
This means that I’ve been throwing my trench on in almost every situation
making all of my sartorial dreams come true
It has been a really useful addition to my closet
There’s no doubt, however, that a Burberry trench coat is an investment piece – it is bananas expensive. Which is why I debated for almost five (5!!) years. And while it does have some special features, a few other options — similar to Burberry’s — have been popping up. Namely? J.Crew’s Icon Trench
J.Crew’s Icon Trench looks very similar to Burberry’s iconic one. It has many of the same features
and a double-breasted design with a belted waist
In this video, I do a deep dive into the differences between Burberry’s Kensington Trench Coat and the J.Crew Icon Trench
or if you’ve found a good Burberry dupe

Pub guru Michael Thiele is selling Hardimans Hotel
one of the only watering holes in Kensington
A leading international pub guru has revealed the top suburbs to own a pub in Melbourne
after recently listing one of Kensington’s only watering holes for sale
Michael Thiele founded the Australian themed “walkabout” pubs in the UK
before returning Down Under in 2004 to establish Open Door Pub Co
The hospitality king sold the hugely successful pub chain to Dixon Hospitality for millions in December 2015
before acquiring Hardimans Hotel in the inner-city suburb of Kensington two years later

Gasometer Hotel to close as Melbourne live music venue, gastropub replacement expected
In addition to the rarity of being one of the only pubs in the inner-western suburb
Mr Thiele said Hardimans’ menu and service strongly appealed to the Kensington community
“I think a good pub caters to the needs of its market,” he said
Current owner Michael Thiele said Hardimans Hotel is a rare find
being one of the only watering holes in Kensington
so the menu’s got to be right for the market
and also the range of products that you sell in terms of your beverage selection
“Because we’ve got lots of families and older people in Kensington
a very good wine list and things that those people appreciate … basically
Located northwest of the CBD, at 521-535 Macaulay Rd, Kensington, Hardimans Hotel was built in the 1870s and originally designed to resemble a ship
Hardimans is located 4km northwest of Melbourne’s bustling CBD
The historic building has maintained its nautical theme
It features expansive windows that allow plenty of natural light in
and a beer garden with a subtle beachy vibe
Upstairs there are function spaces with a private bar and balcony
The nautical-themed pub features an impressive bar
boasting an ever changing tap list of craft beers on its website

which was recently refurbished and is being presented as a “trophy investment”
Real estate agency JLL describe Hardimans as a “trophy investment” in an ideal inner-city location
Mr Thiele said inner-city suburbs like Kensington were the best places to own a pub in Victoria
they’ve always been good places to own a pub,” he said
“Places where you’ve got a high concentration of people with disposable income and also probably living in smaller residences who are more inclined to get out during the week.”
And with 40 years experience working around the world
Mr Thiele said there was no Aussie city that beat Melbourne’s pub scene
but I think overall the pubs are better in Melbourne,” he said
International hospitality king Michael Thiele has crowned Melbourne the best pub city in Australia
The hotel connoisseur’s dream pub destination follows the same logic
“There’s a lot of places in the world where I’d like to own a pub
but at the moment I wouldn’t mind owning a really good pub in Fitzroy where my family lives,” he said
revealing he was about to sign the contract for the Kent Hotel in Carlton North
“We always go down the quality food and beverage offer
getting some nice wines in there and some good beer and spirits lists.”
Former Kent Hotel owner Tony Adamo pictured out the front of the Carlton North watering hole
which new owner Michael Thiele hopes to give a “new lease of life”
Mr Thiele added that quality and service had been prioritised since Victoria’s pub market “repositioned” itself following the Covid-19 pandemic
“People were more inclined to drink less volume
“They were also trading up a bit on what they were ordering off the menu
“So your products have got to be quality and it’s got to be value for money.”
He said the cost-of-living crisis had made it difficult
for hospitality businesses to keep prices as low as they once were
but because of the labour and energy costs now
you can’t be giving food away anymore,” he said
“It just costs so much to produce and clean up.”
JLL are accepting expressions of interest for Hardimans Hotel until 5pm on March 26

Kate Middleton & Prince William Are Set to Appear on Buckingham Palace Balcony—and It’s For a Surprising Occasion
Local: Kensington presents a unique alternative to the traditional rental experience
offering a range of floorplans that allow residents to select a home that truly suits their needs
Melbourne’s rental market has become increasingly competitive
with historically low vacancy rates making it difficult for tenants to secure quality housing
The scarcity of available homes means renters often have to settle for whatever is on offer
rather than choosing a space that aligns with their lifestyle and future plans
Local: Kensington, a project by certified B Corp Local: Residential, offers an alternative path.
Unlike the private landlord market, where lease terms and personalisation options are often rigid, this build-to-rent development provides renters with stability, flexibility, and a living space tailored to their preferences.
Co-CEO of Local: Residential Matt Berg believes Local: Kensington is meeting an essential need in the market.
“It solves a lot of problems that have plagued the traditional rental market,” Mr Berg said.
“Most rental properties are designed for maximum return. Ours are designed for people.
“That means thoughtfully crafted spaces, designed to foster connection and community.
"Whether it’s shared social areas, local partnerships, or simply a focus on livability, we make sure your home is more than just a place to sleep—it’s a place where you truly belong.
“You can live with the kind of security that usually only comes with homeownership.”
Local: Kensington offers 6-month to 5-year leasing options with a professional team onsite to help make the experience of renting hassle-free.
One of the stand-out features of Local: Kensington is its diverse range of floorplans, designed to accommodate different lifestyles and household sizes – whether you’re a young professional, share housing or a growing family.
“They’re proving to be incredibly popular, especially among renters moving out of share houses who want their own space but still want the social benefits of a community,” Mr Berg said.
“We’ve seen strong demand from families and shared households who need more space, but in Melbourne’s private rental market, three-bedroom apartments with access to amenities like a pool, cinema room and games area are incredibly hard to come by,” Mr Berg said.
“By including them in our portfolio, we’re catering to a broader range of renters who would otherwise struggle to find the right fit.”
Prospective Local: Kensington residents can choose from a wide range of apartment sizes and layouts.
Outside their own apartments, residents also have access to the range of value-packed amenities included.
With private work-from-home spaces, a resident lounge, a pool, a gym, yoga studio, and multiple outdoor entertaining areas with barbecues, renters are getting much more for their rent.
Moving into a sustainably designed residential rental building also has its efficiencies, reducing utility costs to residents using the latest passive building design principles and high-quality materials.
Residents can maximise savings by joining the in-house renewable energy network of the fully electrified building, fed from the enormous 200kW solar installation.
In a city where rental availability is at a premium, most renters have little choice but to accept whatever is available, even if it doesn’t meet their needs.
Many traditional rental properties offer limited layouts, forcing tenants to compromise on space, functionality, or location.
Local: Kensington breaks this mould by offering multiple floorplan options, allowing tenants to find a home that fits their lifestyle.
“Typically, renters don’t get to choose from a variety of layouts,” Mr Berg explained.
“They take what’s available, even if it doesn’t suit their way of living.
“But here, we give people control over their home environment, whether that means choosing an apartment with a dedicated workspace or one that better accommodates their pets.”
Flexible enough to suit many different lifestyles, Local: Kensington makes renting work for residents.
This flexibility is particularly valuable for renters who work remotely and need a dedicated home office.
Likewise, families can select a layout that suits their household dynamics, while pet owners benefit from pet-friendly spaces, including a dedicated pet wash, designed with their furry companions in mind.
Only two stops from the city, the area is close to parks and green spaces, universities, transport, dining and lifestyle hubs.
Local: Kensington is ready to move into now.
A passion area for Shannae Ingleton-Smith has blossomed into a 6-year-old talent management firm prioritizing diverse creators
Ingleton-Smith understands the nuances of the creator economy, having worked as an influencer who was earning revenue and steadily securing more deals. She also co-led a Facebook group with a close friend that helped Black creators learn how to advocate for themselves and negotiate opportunities
This even led to a mention by a Forbes writer who highlighted the significant revenue creators were generating through the group
while actively working in a corporate role
Ingleton-Smith began receiving requests from creators to become their manager
I’m learning and I like helping people
I don’t expect to be paid doing this.’ That was my mentality initially,” she said in an interview with AFROTECH™
“Then I think after the fourth or fifth person asked me if they could manage them
‘The universe is telling me that this is what I’m I’m supposed to be doing
Another turning point for Ingleton-Smith occurred while she was working at a communications and entertainment company that owned magazines. She spent eight years at the company and recalls a moment when a client informed her that they were choosing not to spend their money with the company directly
Ingleton-Smith says she recognized a growing trend: Social media was becoming the preferred medium
“Social media was taking market share away from every medium
They’re the new radio where before there were clearly defined media pillars
Social media just came in and ate everybody’s food… At the time
but then TikTok came around and took even more people’s attention
And advertising is the business of people’s attention
I knew it was the right bet and that there was gonna be a lot of money in it
and it wasn’t gonna be going anywhere,” Ingleton-Smith explained
For the past six years, Ingleton-Smith’s bet has placed her at the top of her own agency as founder, president and CEO of Kensington Grey, which is a talent management firm that specializes in casting, influencer marketing, creator marketing, social media, and social marketing.
Its roster includes Topicals Founder and CEO Olamide Ayomikun Olowe, lifestyle creator Symphani Soto, and beauty and fashion content creator Aaliyah Jay.

“We’ve since expanded to all underserved categories across every intersection of what it means to be considered a minority,” she said
“And we just continue to replicate what we’ve done within the Black and brown community so successfully to all people who consider themselves to be underserved or to be a minority
We wanted to make sure that we would have diverse options for people on the decision maker side.”
“I just have this inner fire up inside of me that just continues to tell me that you’re gonna be good. Just keep going. Keep pushing. Keep fighting. Keep innovating. And you’ll continue to rise and evolve and innovate and move forward,” she expressed.
Looking ahead, part of Kensington Grey’s next chapter will include a first for the agency. It is poised to expand into film, sports, and entertainment, and it’s also set to launch a proprietary product alongside Jenee Naylor by the Fall 2025 within the accessory space. This would mark the agency’s first creator-led proprietary product.

A group of Year 6 students have produced a podcast series for national broadcaster SBS
An educator with more than a quarter of a century’s experience
Kensington Public School Principal Louise Stone
has never felt the need to be anchored to the past
“I am one of those principals that thinks beyond the traditional classroom and textbook,” Ms Stone said
“Learning has to be engaging and fun; it has to be interesting; and it has to prepare our kids for many new futures.”
At a progressive public school in Sydney’s east
Already a school that encouraged film and the arts
Ms Stone took it to the next level in 2021 when she caught up with a former teacher and colleague Rob Kaldor who was working in the professional podcasting space
Ms Stone had been mulling over adding podcasting to the school’s curriculum when Mr Kaldor floated the idea of teaching it at the school
it quickly became a favoured activity for Years 3 to 6 students at Kensington Public School who embraced the art of writing
Mr Kaldor explored an opportunity to team up with SBS to produce an ongoing student podcast on Spotify
The idea was to create a ‘Behind the News’ style program where students could touch on issues that impacted them and their futures by engaging guests to discuss set topics
After refining the scope of the project and tweaking their submission
Kensington Public School won a grant and became the chosen school in Australia to launch the podcast with SBS
The series of six podcasts tackles important issues from the perspective of young learners
giving them a platform to share their thoughts

Pleasure Queen brings some handy trial performances into her debut
latest trial she worked home into a close third in a 900m heat at Rosehill
Can see her getting a nice run from the draw
Spice Prawn is a very well-bred filly who has been behind the placings in her two trials
and she poked home well behind Pleasure Queen almost a month ago
Scrumptious has had the race experience from debuting in the Gimcrack and returns on the back of two trials
Doesn’t appear to be an on-pacer so it will be interesting to see where she ends up.How to play it: Pleasure Queen WIN

Invincible Phantom has looked sharp leading all the way to win both trials in recent weeks
Given a bit of a sound out in the latest and stretched out in good style
Likely finds the fence first here and can expect him to run well
Grand Prairie has improved with each trial and ran into second in the latest of those
Drawn the inside and if he continues to improve he could be in the finish
Canal is a big watch first-up since debuting at Bendigo back in November
draws well in this and could measure up.How to play it: Invincible Phantom WIN
Meridiana looks a smart filly in the making
and she’s found the line nicely in her two recent trials
The trip looks to be ideal given her breeding
Fleeting Spirit is the horse to beat on exposed form with a big improvement when second at Rosehill two weeks ago
She was solid in betting there and the step up in trip should be in her favour
Tempranillo chased Meridiana home when second in her latest trial
asked to show a bit more than her previous. How to play it: Meridiana WIN
Siesta showed a bit of promise in Victoria in three starts in the spring with seconds at each appearance
There was plenty to like about the way she put away her rivals in a recent Warwick Farm trial under no pressure
Mia Ballerina has been racing consistently without winning with three placings this time in and barrier one gives her every chance to be in the finish again
Happy Bellie led as an odds-on favourite when runner-up at Gosford first-up form a spell

Bundeena has been a bit disappointing this time in but was climbing over their backs at the finish at Canterbury last start
Zoukerino was a drifter in betting at Canterbury last start but made a late bid to just miss behind Yankee One
Wrathful was well-supported second-up when running into fourth at Warwick Farm over a mile
Gets some weight relief here and while staying at a similar trip might not be ideal there looks enough speed for him to be effective if you can make ground
Don Pedro is hard to knock on two easy wins at Warwick Farm over 1400m since his first-up run here back in January
Flying Thinker also comes off a win having led all the way to score at Rosehill two weeks ago and the form is okay with Pocketing coming out of the race to win.How to play it: Wrathful EACH-WAY

Sumo Fish is ticking over for the Country Championships after a strong finishing win at Port Macquarie to make it four on end in the country
Mawjood can mix form but a repeat of his last-start second to Flying Thinker at Rosehill would be good enough to go close

When she set out to adapt her best-selling novel Long Bright River for television screens
Philly author Liz Moore was committed to portraying the opioid crisis in Kensington — the backdrop for the novel and its adaptation
now streaming on Peacock — with accuracy and empathy
Both tend to be challenging to capture in many fictional takes on addiction
Moore said in an interview last month before the show’s premiere
In this historically working-class community
residents are protective of how their neighborhood is portrayed — and wary of decades of media productions that define it solely by the crisis on its streets
“One of the things we talked about was involving the community at every level,” Moore said
explaining that she and showrunner Nikki Toscano discussed at length “the ethics of making art about Philadelphia
and specifically art that would include Kensington.”
The show follows Michaela “Mickey” Fitzpatrick
a police officer working in Kensington whose sister
As a serial killer targets sex workers on Kensington Avenue
“One main reason to tell a story like this is to give a new perspective and to breed compassion
We’re hoping to help be a voice for a community that’s incredibly resilient,” Seyfried said
Sarah Laurel, who heads the harm-reduction organization Savage Sisters, worked closely with Ashleigh Cummings, who plays Kacey and visited Kensington Avenue several times to prepare for the role.
“We would talk about my substance use in Kensington, about survivor sex workers and the things we did — what it’s like to be a person going through that crisis, compounded with violence against women and police indifference,” Laurel said. “It was difficult to talk about, but I was very impressed with the way Ashleigh took her time with it.”
Cummings has family members who have also struggled with addiction, but was raised in Australia and had never heard of the crisis in Kensington before auditioning.
“When it came time to film, I tried to spend as much time down the Ave as possible,” she said. “There are a lot of exploitative eyes on Kensington, but our responsibility was to engender empathy, to bring people inside the experience.”
In the show’s opening scenes, Mickey walks down Kensington Avenue with her new partner, who, picking through tents on the sidewalk, asks, “How could someone choose to live like this?” A few scenes later, in a flashback, Mickey’s former partner, played by Nicholas Pinnock, answers the question: “When these women started using,” he says, “they might have had a choice. It’s not a choice for them anymore.”
Pinnock, who is from London, said the cast didn’t want to make “voyeuristic television.”
“We didn’t want people to be shocked into it. We want them to have empathy from the inside. In the media, [the opioid crisis] is portrayed in such a way where there’s a blanket view of these things. Why make another TV show that does that?”
Moore said it was important for the show to portray addiction as a medical condition, not a moral failing — even if some of the show’s characters think otherwise. She also wanted to subvert narratives about “victims” and “saviors” common in crime fiction.
“Mickey perceives herself to be morally upright, almost in contrast to her sister at the start, and over the course of the series, I think she comes to have a much more nuanced understanding of her own complicity in some dark forces in the neighborhood and also within her own family,” Moore said. “She comes to see herself not as the sister who’s done everything right all along, but somebody who’s made some questionable choices herself.”
It was important, too, to portray Kensington as a place with nuance, said Moore, who has volunteered for years in the neighborhood.
“We were really committed to portraying it very holistically — as a place that is underserved, but also a place that is resilient, a place that is hopeful, a place with a really fascinating history,” she said.
Laurel, who consulted for the show, typically avoids media about the opioid crisis — and no fictional portrayal, she said, can truly convey the reality on the street in Kensington.
“I think Kensington has gotten a ton of media, a lot of negative media — it’s been trauma porn,” she said. “My hope is that [Long Bright River] portraying it in a compassionate way opens hearts and minds.”
We’re still a couple of weeks from the Polytrack Provincial-Midway Championships Final
but the next few days are shaping as significant for Kim Waugh’s chances in the $1 million race
The Wyong trainer has already qualified two horses for the April 12 race and Mogul Monarch
will round off his build-up in the TAB Handicap (1400m) at Kensington on Wednesday
she’ll have Bojangles engaged at Rosehill to top off his preparation and Northern Eyes will attempt to join them in the final via a top-three finish in the wild card on his home track
Mogul Monarch qualified through the Gosford heat and
he had to switch back to the inside and change lanes a few times,” she said
“They all got past him and to fight back and run second it was a really good effort
Once they get a length past you it’s hard to pull that back.”
Anna Roper will take 3kg off the gelding’s 62.5kg impost at what will be his first attempt at the 1400m
“The way he’s settling now I think he will be fine
the way he hit the line in that 1200m the other day I was happy,” she said
Bojangles was runner-up in the first heat at Hawkesbury on February 20 and has since ran a close second to Les Vampires at Rosehill
and he’ll contest a Benchmark 88 over 1400m at Rosehill this Saturday where Waugh hopes he can bring an end to a run of back luck with wide barriers
“His first run with the blinkers the other day I thought was really good,” she said
“He always hits a flat spot around the 600m
He drew terribly so he’s back further than what he needs to be and has to make these really long runs

Sargent is yet to get a runner through to this year’s $1 million final on April 12 at Randwick
where Harlow Mist and French Ruler were $15 chances with Sportsbet
The wildcard on Saturday is the last chance to make the 15-strong race and offers three spots
Harlow Mist was also nominated for Friday’s Muswellbrook Cup
but Sargent said he won’t be sending any runners to that race
“Hopefully they’ve improved with their last run
and it’s a good race to give them a shot at the $1 million,” Sargent said.Craig Kerry

the Coalition’s failure to sway voters has
come under intense scrutiny.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIts lack of policies around property that resonated with voters has been a large part of that criticism.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAmong those policies was a $5-billion infrastructure program to unlock up to 500,000 new homes

two and three bedrooms across six eight-storey buildings in a campus-style precinct with a shared internal courtyard
There will also be 461sq m of retail space along Macaulay Road and within the Macaulay-Stubbs precinct
Residents will have access to private dining rooms
Hayball designed the plans for the project
which has a full practical completion date of November this year
The development includes 33 social and affordable homes
and nine specialist disability accommodation homes will be delivered within the project by Home in Place
Local Residential co-chief executive Dan McLennan told The Urban Developer that the project followed sustainable design
“We think it’s effectively the most sustainable build-to-rent asset that’s been delivered in Australia
and provides a holistic endorsement of the sustainability of the project,” McLennan said
McLennan also noted that the project would have a 200kW solar farm on the roof space
the project itself will be fully electric and operate on renewable power,” McLennan said
“But what this system enables us to do is to generate an incredible amount of that power actually on site
campus-style development that equates to a lot of roof space
“We see roofs as fantastic little mini solar farms for our projects.”
McLennan said the company was looking at affordable build-to-rent options alongside its usual market price build-to-rent offerings
but also looking at opportunities to provide affordable build-to-rent assets and how they can be structured,” McLennan said
“We are working with our investors right now around opportunities to create more affordable build-to-rent
alongside what we’re doing currently in terms of our market build-to-rent.”
