Two men have been hospitalised after a car flipped during a two-vehicle crash at a Keysborough roundabout Ambulance paramedics were called to the Church and Chapel roads intersection about 11.20pm on Tuesday 3 December A man in his 40s was transported to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition A man in his 20s was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition Belinda Peterson was just one of more than 1000 at-risk people across rural and regional Victoria to receive free smoke alarms and assistance from CFA and RACV since April Now having lived first-hand through the wrath of an unnerving house fire Belinda could not be more grateful for the timely maintenance visit that allowed her smoke alarms to alert her out of danger The fortunate getaway has inspired her to spur on any Victorians requiring assistance to seek out their local fire brigade or to ask questions if they are unsure about the condition of their smoke alarms “I am incredibly lucky I had my new smoke alarms single and unable to reach the heights of those ceilings meant I needed help,” Belinda said “It was a case of calling my local fire brigade and having them come round and install them for myself and my neighbour “Although the units didn’t need to be changed they did replace the back up batteries that were well and truly out of date and cleaned them all thoroughly before performing tests to ensure they were working before they left.” Reality hit just four months later when Belinda routinely retrieved her Lite n’ Easy polystyrene box from the front door and placed it on her bench “The box was full of meals and dry ice and as I have limited space in the apartment I put the box on the stovetop bench where I would usually prep food,” Belinda said I had noticed the plants in the front of my courtyard were very dry “My neighbour came over and were chatting for only about two minutes before the smoke and alarms came billowing “The stove wasn’t on when I initially placed down the box but from that movement it made contact with the ignition button and as a result sparked a flame and ultimately the fire.” quick thinking saw Belinda grab doonas off the bed to suppress the fire however when unsuccessful she made a safe exit outside to call triple zero “You need to have a very clear idea of what your escape areas are in your house or unit I only had the front door and the glass doors at the back I have no side windows at all,” Belinda said “When my kids were younger and we were in a bigger house and I encourage everyone to have a fire blanket stored somewhere logical and easily accessible.” While fire services were able to extinguish the remaining fire and ventilate the house stovetop and plaster throughout the kitchen CFA recommends all smoke alarms in the home be powered by a 10-year lithium battery be interconnected and installed in every bedroom have a lifespan of around 10 years and should be replaced after that Residents should also test smoke alarms monthly and clean or dust them yearly For more information on the Smoke Alarm Installation Program and safety tips, visit the CFA website. currently highlighted by the South Eastern Sports Hub Project on Pillars Road in Bangholme – The completion of the Keysborough Community Hub project to the meet the expectations and needs of the community to ensure local residents have the facilities they deserve and expect local to them – Residents in the Keysborough South Ward getting value for money for their rates through the provision of adequate amenities quality services being delivered locally and proper servicing by public transport With the addressing of these basics requiring advocating within council and advocating to the other levels of government Over my lifetime I have been involved in the local community in many ways having completed my primary and secondary education at Springvale Primary School and then Springvale Secondary College (now Keysborough Secondary College) Before completing tertiary education at Monash University in nearby Clayton I have been an active member of the Springvale Historical Society and Dandenong and District Historical Society I am currently involved as a player and on the committee of an SFNL football club and understand the great value of sporting clubs as community hubs My working life in the community services sector has been around the wider southeast My work provides insight to the struggles of the most disadvantaged members of our society and how council work impacts peoples everyday lives I am standing for election because as a lifelong local of the area and as a younger member of our community I believe I can make a positive contribution to our vibrant city as a local councillor work and play locally thus giving me an understanding of this community and its needs I also feel council needs to ensure it is listening to local residents and providing the services that help local residents live positive As per above I am not taking donations so I can remain a truly independent candidate beholden to no special interests other than those of local residents I am running independently and not receiving any advice from any such people listed above I am directing my second preference to Ajdin Muzur the parks and I especially appreciate the making Keysborough South Ward and the City of Greater Dandenong as a whole a better place to live When she decided not to run in Keysborough South Ward I decided with Rhonda’s endorsement to stand in Keysborough South Ward Local government is the closest level of government to the people and Councillors can make a real influence to people’s lives Campaigning can be really expensive and with the cost of living pressures it’s a hard ask for many people to donate money to my campaign I have spent a significant amount of my own money for fundraising events and I will continue to fundraise until October as every dollar will help I do not accept donations from businesses or corporations nor any real estate agents or property developers I only accept donations from community supporters and everyday people While it means I may not be able to fundraise as much as other candidates I am still extremely fortunate to have family and colleagues support my campaign and they are chipping in what they can I am grateful to have the support and endorsement of the outgoing Councillor for Keysborough South Ward I am still learning more about the other candidates and will publish a ‘How To Vote’ by the end of September While I ask for residents to vote for me as their first preference I would also like to ask residents of the Keysborough South Ward to preference their votes to the candidates to step away from the presidency and focus on youth work I assisted female members facing domestic violence and helped them through their struggles I realized that sports offered a vital safe haven for youth and female community members This led to the creation of South East United FC some starting as young as 4 years old up to u15s and a men’s team that also claimed a league victory this year talk to other candidates to have better understanding Time is running out fast for Berwick Springs to discover its best cricket in the Dandenong District Cricket Association’s Turf 3 competition this summer could enter the Christmas break with a negative win-loss ratio on the verge of their fourth loss of the summer against Silverton after day one at home The Titans are on the worse side of the match equation with Silverton only requiring a further 34 runs to reach the target of 133 including from the returning Jackson Marie and in-form Shalika Karunanayake ate away at the Titans’ top order with no batter passing 50 Riley Hillman (35) and Lachlan Marie (40) were the most profitable scorers at the top of the batting card but the remainder of the side could only offer 62 runs between them was a gaping hole in the middle order that was not filled Dylan Hayes’ excellent summer with the ball continued for Silverton taking 5/35 to move to 19 wickets for the season Kenneth Smart and Berwick Springs offered a fightback in the second innings but still face a major disadvantage heading into day two this week Smart took 3/25 including the key figure of Rob North at number three without scoring to ensure the Bakers would be forced to rise to the occasion Opener Varinder Virk remains the key wicket Keysborough joins Silverton in the likely winners circle having mounted a brilliant revival against Lynbrook The Knights need only three further wickets to extend its winning streak to six matches James Wright led the comeback for Keysborough swinging the match back into his side’s favour in the midst of a marathon 15-over opening spell that netted a third-consecutive five-wicket haul He ripped the Lakers’ middle order to pieces with four wickets in three consecutive overs as 1/31 became 5/36 in 33 deliveries of carnage that concluded with the huge wicket of Jatinder Singh for a first ball duck Joining Singh on Wright’s victim list was Kaine Bundy (22) giving the veteran the wickets of his opponents’ top three run scorers for the summer The wicket of Devanandh Chandrasekar later in his spell gave him his fifth making it 11 wickets in his last two matches Lynbrook’s hopes remain with Anubhav Chopra and Media Dala who reached stumps together in the midst of a 35-run partnership for the eighth wicket Lynbrook teenager Yashwant Singh and Jatinder Singh combined to cut the Knights down to size Jatinder Singh took two wickets in the first five overs of play removing Abhinay Motupalli and Jonathan Mohamed for ducks Not fazed by the success of the Jatinder Singh’s exploits at the top of Keysborough’s batting card Fresh from his blistering 133 off 88 balls last week against Berwick Springs he continued where he left off with a boundary-heavy 72 from 60 ensuring the bowlers did have the contest completely on their terms whose innings came to an end in the 25th over having laid a platform for the remainder of his teammates by flying along at five runs per over during his time at the crease Otto made 43 and was the last man out as partners came and went around him Singh’s five-wicket haul was his first at senior level having held his own in the Lakers’ first XI despite his age He took 4/39 against Berwick Springs and 4/14 last week against Silverton in a testament to the legspinner’s consistency Silverton and Keysborough both need wins to keep pace with Fountain Gate joining them as the only sides with outright wins this summer after steamrolling Doveton on day one last week The sale of a Keysborough historic church is close to being finalised Uniting Church of Australia stated that it was “presently finalising contract arrangements” with an undisclosed buyer of the circa 1877 former Wesleyan Methodist Church site at 176 Chapel Road community group Friends of Keysborough Historic Chapel – backed by a 2300-signature petition – had urged City of Greater Dandenong to buy the 4.1-hectare site However Uniting Church confirmed the council had not made a late bid really disappointing,” Friends of Keysborough Historic Chapel member Gaye Guest said several council-election candidates – including elected councillor Melinda Yim – stated the council should reconsider its earlier refusal to buy the site for an alleged $2 million “If it can’t be restored for a religious purpose an aged care service or community service,” Yim said prior to her election “I would prefer it to be in the community rather than for private use.” There were rumoured concerns about the council bearing extra costs such as renovating the building that had fallen into disrepair and been trashed by vandals Sunshine-based Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga had expressed an interest to purchase at a lower price restore the older church as a museum and use the wooden building as a chapel The church went onto the private market in September with expressions of interest closing on 10 October The site was being marketed as suitable for town homes The 147-year-old church is protected by a local heritage overlay Shrewd captaincy from Keysborough captain Christo Otto has Hampton Park in a world of trouble at stumps on day one of the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 3 contest at Rowley Allan Reserve Otto declared the Knights’ innings closed in order to make early inroads with the ball with form bowler James Wright in his arsenal raring to go who ensured the declaration and 11 overs with the ball paid dividends He struck with just his second delivery after Mohammed Rizan was caught by Jackson O’Brien and removed the dangerous Gurpreet Singh in his second over They’ll resume next week needing to do something they have not done at all this summer Needing to rebound after last week’s horror loss to Narre North Keysborough flew out of the gates in the first innings on the back of a rapid opening partnership Chanaka Kahandawala and O’Brien raced to 70 after 10 overs with boundaries coming thick and fast Kahandawala‘s onslaught came to an end in the 13th over but O’Brien continued the charge having finally found some much-needed form after not passing 50 all summer Shanaka Perumpuli then played a steadying role with a patient 76 batting through the remainder of the innings from number three the Knights’ run rate was still above four when Otto called Perumpuli and Anant Singh in from the middle Fazir Faththar and Mohamed Nisthar both took three wickets for Hampton Park but is less of a chance to force its way in than the Lions Lynbrook had one of its best batting days of the summer with two 50-run stands and a third worth 45 pushing the Lakers to 9/231 Harjinder Sohal shook off the drama of losing opening partner Adithya Naron early for one by playing the innings’ anchor role reaching 65 and adding 75 with James Kellett at number three for the second wicket Jacob Stephens’ stability ensured the Lakers passed the 200 mark He made 46 and played a key role in a 51-run eighth wicket partnership with coach and former Wookey Medal winner Silverton has an immaculate opportunity to put further pressure on last week’s conqueror in Fountain Gate in a push for the top spot on the table The Bakers have a 60-run lead over Doveton which failed to reach triple figures for the seventh time this season with Silverton racing to 5/154 in 21 overs later in the day Anmol Zakhmi and Rob North leading the charge with an outright victory beckoning on day two Should they collect 10 points and Fountain Gate six the margin will close to just two points between first and second and give the Bakers a four-point gap over Keysborough Keysborough will meet Silverton in the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 3 grand final this weekend after both recorded comprehensive semi-final victories after so many years of carrying great expectation for the Knights it was all-rounder Christo Otto who led his team to victory over Berwick Springs Otto contributed a valuable 49 in Keysborough’s 266 and took 6/54 off 26 overs in the Berwick Springs total of 209 to set up the Knights’ 57-run win Keysborough was able to see off the new ball with Chanaka Kahandawala’s 26 off 20 immediately putting the Titans on the back foot while opening partner Jackson O’Brien’s 74 anchored the first part of the innings while several teammates contributed handy cameos in the middle order against a bowling attack led by Shalika Karunanayake (2/50) Berwick Springs got off to a flyer on day two with five of star-opener Jackson Marie’s first 12 balls deposited to or over the boundary A 73-run opening stand between Marie and the more circumspect Riley Hillman (20) set the match up tantalisingly but both were dismissed in quick succession Lachie Marie (23) and Archit Vora (27) also got starts but Karunanayake (70) was the only Titans batter to pass 50 Karunanayake ultimately ran out of partners and was the 10th wicket dismissed as he was forced to try and change the momentum against a Keysborough bowling battery that was firing Silverton batted first against Fountain Gate and set the game up with an imposing score of 306 to win by 233 runs against arguably the deepest bowling attack in the league Frequently reliant on their bowling attack to restrict scoring and break through the Gators’ inability to take quick wickets prevented them from putting significant pressure on the Bakers Only once did Silverton lose two wickets within 30 runs Captain Robert North scored his first half century since round one with his experience coming to the fore as he saw off some dangerous spells and was willing to bide his time in a patient 73 Harsha Dampahalage (35) and Harkanwal Singh (40 not out) all scored between 17 and 40 It was a fine showcase of batting depth against a side which has frequently bowled well in partnerships throughout the season Spinner Surya Pratap capped off a fine season for the Gators with 4/102 The Gators lost their first wicket in the second over of day two courtesy of a rip-snorting Dylan Hayes (1/18) delivery and quickly fell into a deep hole with just three batters facing more than 20 balls Singh led the bowling attack with 3/11 and Virk took 3/14 as the Gators were trounced for 73 inside 36 overs The decider will be played at Dandenong West’s Greaves Reserve across this weekend Keysborough will be seeking to return to Turf 2 after its relegation last season while a jump for Silverton would represent a massive rise The Knights recruited well in the off-season with all-rounder Kahandawala providing firepower with the bat at the top of the order as the competition leading runscorer this season who is also in the competition’s top-five run scorers and the pair shape as key wickets for Silverton to nab early while incumbent James Wright has lead an even bowling line-up Keysborough have at times shown a propensity to lose quick wickets They were bowled out for 84 against Lynbrook in round two; lost 7/11 against Fountain Gate in round six and were skittled for 88 against Narre North in round 10 highlighting the opportunity Silverton will have with the ball Singh and Hayes will be looking for early breakthroughs while Gamage took five wickets in the most recent fixture against Keysborough and Virk is a proven performer in a reasonably new-look Silverton side in 2024-25 while the top-order will look to bat around North given how much time in the middle most of the batters got in the semi-final but they will be coming up against a side which they lost to in both their home and away meetings crucially relying on less heralded players to do a lot of the heavy lifting undoubtedly giving the squad confidence in its ability to perform against the best That tight match followed a 60-run Knights win in the round five clash between the teams Time is ticking on the massive South East Sports Hub project on Pillars Road Bangholme with the deal between developer Intrapac and Keysborough Golf Club due to lapse in 12 months The project controversially hinges on whether the State Government rezones the club’s Green Wedge golf course at Hutton Road for a housing estate of up to 1100 dwellings the golf club would move near the SESH site Intrapac has pledged to fund the new course as well as the $30 million stage one of the 71-hectare SESH The timing of SESH’s stages two and three is “subject to funding commitments” KGC president Darrell Swindells says the deal is vital for the club’s survival and push for a broader membership and healthier bank balance the club – with 500-plus full-time members and another 550 ‘life-style’ members – won’t be able to “move in the direction that golf is moving in” Which is to attract juniors and time-poor members to a fresh-designed layout with shorter courses and matchplay Swindells noted that the club founders made a bold move from Albert Park Lake to Hutton Road in 1950 The course had little changed in the past 70 years The club can’t afford the funds – or the disruption – of redesigning their current home members would eventually vote with their feet The State Government has so far rejected calls to approve the rezoning The proposal is also fiercely opposed by Defenders of the Green Wedge Greater Dandenong Environment Group and residents neighbouring the golf course They argue against the loss of the private open space as well as the whittling away of the Green Wedge Mr Swindells says the SESH won’t be made a major issue during the October council elections “The decision to do it is not going to be a council decision The reason that we work with the council is to make sure we’re delivering something the council is happy with.” Its lobbying work is “99 per cent” toward the State Government “The State Government keep their cards close to their chest Obviously we’ve been working with Intrapac and can only hope (the Government’s) rhetoric for more housing matches their actions.” He says the current course is an “anomaly” on the edge of the Green Wedge Rezoning it will make little difference to the Green Wedge The site was “low hanging fruit” that would help with the State Government’s target for 57,000 more dwellings in Greater Dandenong by 2051 Swindells also notes Greater Dandenong Council’s potential “financial windfall” in extra rates revenue from “800-900” homes as well as the SESH “If we could sit around the table with the dissenters and talk about what we are all prepared to give up this project would be getting ticked off very easily “There are too many winners to ignore in this.” The MANASIS dance group represented the Greek community at the annual “VASAR” cultural festival Stephan the Archdeacon Serbian Orthodox Church in Keysborough The event brought together Serbian dance groups from across Australia and rhythms from different regions of Serbia the Greek dancers highlighted the deep cultural ties between Greece and the Balkans demonstrating the shared history and traditions that unite the region Their performance featured parallel rhythms showcasing the striking similarities between Greek and Serbian heritage MANASIS showcased customs from Anatoliki Romilia and Thrace presenting the vibrant “Kamiles kai Divitzides” Carnival Season Procession—an iconic feature of Greece’s Dodekaimero and Apokries traditions The Apokries festivities will continue with the MANASIS Masquerade Party on Friday Students will take to Eaton Mall in elaborate furs the group will shift its focus to commemorating Greek National Day with performances and celebrations across the community With the weekend Pennant season coming to the pointy end; round 13 began with Cranbourne 1 Div 1 taking on Keysborough 1 on the front grass green at Cranbourne With the weather slightly overcast but not cold and when Cranbourne teams perceive a possible threat to their position they rise as one All rinks brought their best games and had a day of pure genius Still with a fighting chance of playing finals the Cranbourne team brought out their very best game Peter Elgar 2nd and Joe Byrne Lead who won their rink 35-6 Wayne Stevens 2nd and KJ Hickson Lead who won their rink 32-11 It was a great day for the team and the club winning all rinks in a great effort to still be in the hunt for finals • Cranbourne 1 Div 1 (114) def Keysborough 1 (53) + 53 and 18 points Cranbourne 2 Div 2 travelled to Keysborough to take on their number two team In a close tussle the two teams went hammer and tongs and Best rink for Cranbourne 2 was skipped by Lyn Quigg Fred Scicluna 2nd and Lead Chris Stevenson winning 27-13 Honourable mention goes to the team of skip Ian Barrenger Roger Roscoe 2nd and Vic Butera Lead who drew with their opponents 18-18 The team is still holding fourth place on the ladder and their destiny lies in their own hands They take on top of the ladder Berwick 1 in the last round at home and I’m sure they will be giving it everything they’ve got • Cranbourne 2 Div 2 (75) def by Keysborough 2 (84) – 9 shots and 3 points Cranbourne 3 Div 3 travelled to take on our neighbours Berwick 3 at Berwick In what’s been a very tough year for our Cranbourne 3 team but were beaten by a better team on the day Best rink for Cranbourne was skipped by John Kent Chris Sharpe 2nd and John Anstiss going down 14-25 Berwick 3 was far too strong for our Cranbourne team and ran out easy winners of the overall by winning four rinks to nil • Cranbourne 3 Div 3 (48) def by Berwick 3 (141) – 93 shots and 0 points Cranbourne 4 Div 6 hosted our neighbours Keysborough 4 on the front synthetic green and the game was very up and down Now Keysborough 4 had one rink by the throat and we’re not prepared to take the foot off Despite the Cranbourne rink playing some good bowls Rod Challis and Lesley Deal were more consistent and kept taking us out and you have to applaud them Thank God we have a very tight team of players and the rest of the rinks pulled together to cover the rink that was being badly beaten the determination of this team won the day and I can only thank them all for coming to our rescue In the end Cranbourne won by three rinks to one • Cranbourne 4 Div 4 (84) def Keysborough 4 (82) + 2 shots and 16 points Cranbourne 5 Div 8 forfeited their game to Dandy Club 6 as we just ran out of players What greeted all clubs and players was a beautiful day Despite trying to start earlier and avoid the heat came to an arrangement with their Team Managers and Umpires that they would endeavour to get through the minimum number of ends which constitutes a game hosted Pakenham 2 on the front grass green and the team enjoyed a good outing and won the overall Best rink of the day was skipped by Stephen Bentley Honourable mentions to the teams of Nick Arnold and Lyn Quigg who won their rinks by 6 and 5 shots respectively These teams did reach their 63 ends and well done to both • Cranbourne 1 Div 2 (61) def Pakenham 2 (38) + 3 shots and 16 points Cranbourne 2 Div 3 travelled to Noble Park to take on their number one team As beautiful as the greens and the day was the extreme heat policy also came into effect and both Managers and the Umpire decided if the teams got to the minimum number of ends they would then call the game at that time Best rink for Cranbourne was skipped by Stephen Hickson Jacqui Warner 2nd and Frank Verco Lead winning their rink by five shots the other two rinks were won by Noble Park winning by five shots each • Cranbourne 2 Div 3 (31) def by Noble Park 1 (36) – 5 shots and 2 points Cranbourne 3 Div 4 hosted Chelsea 1 on the front grass green on rinks 9 The aim of the Umpire and two team managers was to get to 45 ends to constitute a game This was achieved and our Cranbourne 3 team tasted victory for only the third time this season Frank Male 2nd and led beautifully by Davina Bobetic Cranbourne 3 won two rinks to one and took the overall points • Cranbourne 3 Div 4 (41) def Chelsea 1 (37) + 4 shots and 14 valuable points Cranbourne 4 (6-A-Side) took on Chelsea 2 at Chelsea and unfortunately the Cranbourne team struggled with the venue and teams and even though they tried hard The teams got through the full 21 ends and should be congratulated to finish the game prior to the extreme heat • Cranbourne 4 (6-A-Side) (26) def by Chelsea 2 (45) – 19 shots and 0 points There is still time for Greater Dandenong Council to buy a historic church in Chapel Road Uniting Church in Australia had recently put the former Wesleyan Methodist church built in 1877 on the open market – after councillors voted down an alleged $2 million purchase of the 4-hectare lot council election candidates in Keysborough and Keysborough South wards gave strong or in-principle support to revisiting the council’s decision A Uniting Church spokesperson stated the council still had the opportunity to offer to buy the site on the terms previously agreed subject obviously to the site not having already been sold via the (expressions-of-interest) process “We would suggest that if council intend to do this that they move rapidly.” A Sunshine-based Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga has indicated to Star Journal its interest in buying the site for pastoral and community use and these are being further considered and negotiated,” the Uniting Church stated we cannot disclose the identities of the parties who have submitted.” intruders have reportedly tagged inside the 147-year-old church building with offensive messages Uniting Church stated that there were “periodic” security checks of the site “Our appointed agents have visited regularly through the campaign “We are presently in the process of organising repair and removal of the offending graffiti.” backed by a 2300-plus signature online petition has been waged to save the historic church for community use Resident Gaye Guest said the latest vandalism belied the owners’ “demolition by neglect mentality” since the site was vacated “We cannot wait any longer to save this property “Four years ago when I was present after the first break-in “Many break-ins later – and after three graffiti blitzes – the chapel needs to be rescued and secured for its heritage value.” the site was marketed as suitable for town homes The church is protected by a local heritage overlay A church community from western Melbourne is hoping to rescue a historic but decaying landmark on Chapel Road is seeking to buy the 147-year-old former Keysborough Wesleyan Methodist Church prior to the site going on the open market next month Tongan church steward Sione Pua said both the chapel and the group shared ties to the same Methodist denomination The group – founded in Sunshine in 1991 – draws on the Wesleyan mission that began in Tonga in the 1800’s “Our ministers in Tonga have always come from Australia Pua hoped that the chapel’s owner Uniting Church of Australia would accept an initial deposit and negotiate a lower price on the 176 Chapel Road site it would initially worship in a wooden chapel on the site which was “ready to go” and recently used by a Samoan congregation The group would like the c.1877 building restored for a historic museum and community use “The historical building needs a bit of attention despite a four-year community campaign to save the chapel Greater Dandenong Council opted out of buying the site This came after years of negotiations between the council and the owner Uniting Church of Australia A Uniting Church spokesperson said the site was being prepared for going on the open market for sale in early September “We expect that a number of parties will be interested in the property and we are bound to dispose of the site in an open and competitive process “We are aware of (the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga’s) interest and would welcome their participation in the sale process “They are aware of the way in which the Uniting Church is required to dispose of real property “We have sold a number of churches that are no longer required for our mission to other religious organisations.” Uniting Church stated no one had been worshipping on the site for “at least a couple of years” “Hence the decision to now sell following COGD decision to walk away from the 2-3 years of conversations and negotiations.” A community-based Friends of Historic Keysborough Chapel group had long fought for the building’s restoration to host uses such as an art gallery Its online petition to save the church has swelled to more than 2300 signatures Friends member Gaye Guest said the group had been long frustrated by the “hurdles” and “brick walls” in its attempts to save the “icon” of Keysborough’s former pastoral history “The Keysborough church was not only where farming families worshipped but was also the main meeting place for many events “For four years now Friends of the Historic Keysborough Chapel have been working to raise the profile of the importance of keeping the land and historic buildings as green open space in a new infill development.” Guest said it appeared the Tongan group was facing the “same hurdles and brick walls that our limited company has experienced” “If only the Uniting Church would see the value in this proposition it would be a win for everyone including our environment and the Green Wedge.” Freemasons across Victoria will revive an annual toy drive tradition in female allegedly pilfering a fish-net and several tropical fish from their tanks on Wednesday 22 January and 3 who are caught on camera in this episode of retail shenanigans,” the post stated It depicts ‘discus’ fish being apparently smuggled into the female’s “designer handbag” and one of the men seeming to tuck a pleco fish down the front of his underwear “Let’s just say fish don’t belong there,” says the video’s narrator – referring to the “unconventional hiding spot” two of the group were identified by several members of the public Their names and addresses were passed onto Victoria Police A “gobsmacked” commenter labelled the act as “disgusting” Another mused “if only it was a piranha and could give him a good bite” Tran said the missing fish were unlikely to survive “Especially because the fish they took are very sensitive to handling and to not being in water “They’re not the most expensive fish in the store – I don’t think they saw the price tags.” A Victoria Police spokesperson said police were investigating a South East Sports Hub (SESH) proponent has lodged a code-of-conduct complaint against a Greater Dandenong councillor Developer Intrapac and Keysborough Golf Club have proposed the 71-hectare sporting hub which controversially hinges on the rezoning of the Green Wedge golf course at Hutton Road for a housing estate of up to 1100 dwellings The club took issue over Cr Rhonda Garad’s Facebook post on 31 July which claimed “the promoters of the SESH have used the City of Dandenong’s logo without authorization” and that their use of a supportive “letter by a past mayor” did “not represent the views of the council at this time” “The CEO has advised the council will be contacting the promoters to request the removal of the logo and address some erroneous statements on their website,” Cr Garad posted “This proposal has never been put to the council for consideration.” The post remains on Cr Garad’s Facebook page Keysborough Golf Club general manager Darren Eckhardt wrote to the council’s CEO demanding that Cr Garad should be “referred to the Mayor for consideration” He stated the post was in breach of Greater Dandenong Council’s code-of-conduct and potentially the Local Government Act “We note that should the Mayor determine there was a breach of the prescribed standards of conduct required under the Councillor Code of Conduct the Mayor is obliged to … refer the complaint immediately and directly to the Municipal Inspector for further investigation.” Eckhardt stated the use of the council logo on the SESH web page was “entirely appropriate” As for a 2022 letter of support from then-mayor Eden Foster it reflected a “long history of the City of Greater Dandenong’s support and continued advocacy for the Keysborough Golf Club’s rezoning and relocation proposal which is inherently and openly linked to the SESH” “We are unaware of any reason why the letter attached to the webpage should not be considered a reasonable reflection of the council’s position in relation to this issue.” He stated that the SESH was a “community-driven initiative” to “help activate and repurpose an unused and unhealthy section of the Dandenong Green Wedge” “We are sincerely disappointed that a councillor would use their position to bring this project – and by imputation the many supporters of the project – into disrepute.” Cr Garad says the use of Council’s logo and a past mayor’s letter is being used in bid to “confer legitimacy” and influence people’s behaviour “to lend their support.” “I received so many calls from distressed residents they got the SESH promotional pamphlets in their letter boxes questioning why is Council supporting this This is a major developer pushing to reduce what is incredibly important environmental land and no way equivalent to a community group “Council needs to be protected from supporting something that is private enterprise.” Greater Dandenong Council chief executive Jacqui Weatherill said the council had not yet formally considered its position on the SESH “Council is supportive of local investment in sport and health initiatives to enhance community wellbeing This aligns with our Council Plan and Physical Activity Strategy.” The council was “investigating the best course of action regarding the logo and letter and will resolve this directly with those involved” The Greater Dandenong letter is featured on the SESH website alongside an array of support statements from sporting bodies such as Football Victoria The proposal is fiercely opposed by Defenders of the Green Wedge The State Government has so far rejected calls to approve the rezoning of golf course on the Green Wedge A site The $30 million stage one of the proposed sporting hub is Greater Dandenong Council’s logo and a past mayor’s letter in support of the controversial South East Sporting Hub (SESH) has caused a stir Councillor Rhonda Garad sought answers at the council meeting on Monday 12 August on past mayor Eden Foster’s letter that described the proposed sporting hub in Pillars Road Bangholme as a “once in a generation opportunity…” The letter was dated late December 2022 – just a few weeks after Ms Foster was elected mayor Council’s chief executive Jacqui Weatherill replied that the letter was Ms Foster’s “personal opinion” and the sporting hub was merely a “speculative proposal…” “A previous mayor had written to community groups expressing support I expect that to be her personal opinion because there was no council resolution to that affect “I would caution that many community groups use our logo without correct authorisation in the first instance In general we’re generous about it because people see the council as being a public facility.” Council’s communications department will send a letter to SESH promoters to take down the CGD logo and the letter “if the group don’t have council authorisation” Ms Weatherill added that the “Council is yet to receive a formal detailed proposal about the SESH and has not formally considered its position it is unlikely Council could consider this proposal during the current term “Council officers are investigating the best course of action regarding the logo and letter and will resolve this directly with those involved.” A SESH spokesperson said the letter in question was issued in “good faith” by a former mayor in December 2022 SESH has been presented as a ‘proposed’ project with all communications clearly outlining the required steps including an amendment to the UGB and a parliamentary vote before any formal submissions are made to the City of Greater Dandenong “The letter from the former Mayor and the use of the City of Greater Dandenong’s logo have been on the SESH website for 21 months without issue “The increasing support for SESH appears to be unsettling detractors who continue to raise myths which have been debunked such as floodplain concerns which have been allayed by a comprehensive environmental impact report “We are concerned by Councillor Garad’s apparent disregard for her ward’s residents suggesting they don’t deserve essential infrastructure due to their location being on CGD’s fringe and stress that if the project is successful residents of the Keysborough South Ward would be welcomed to SESH.” Cr Garad said she was shocked and surprised to hear Ms Weatherill’s “reluctance” in taking a firm action “We weren’t told she (past mayor) was writing this letter The mayor is not an autonomous person but representative of the council and its councillors.” She says the use of Council’s logo and a past mayor’s letter is being used in bid to “confer legitimacy” and influence people’s behaviour “to lend their support.” This is a major developer pushing to reduce what is incredibly important environmental land and no way equivalent to a community group,” Cr Garad says Keysborough South resident and Greater Dandenong Environment Group president Isabelle Nash said she’s disappointed that the letter is still on the SESH website “The longer the letter stays there the more damage it does for residents who are very stressed about the proposal It will end up being more costly for council and increase our rates “As an environmentalist I’m not for the SESH proposal because the Green Wedge needs to stay – for environmental reasons and for the safety of our neighbourhood as there’s flooding issues in that area,” she said Ms Nash has lived in the Keysborough South neighbourhood for the past 10 years and says she has thought about moving somewhere greener where nature will be protected but hasn’t given up hopes in their collective battle against SESH “It’s shocking that a developer would mislead a community about how far along they are in their proposed development when they haven’t even got support from council “I feel like there’s a lot of money going into it to convince people there’s something there when there’s nothing.” Defenders of the South East Green Wedge spokesperson Matthew Kirwan says Council needs to make a strong stance to let the community know they’re not in support of SESH “The community believe that the City of Greater Dandenong are supporting this sports hub in the flood-prone green wedge are helping plan this hub and that the hub will be managed and owned by the City of Greater Dandenong – as this is the information they have received in their letterboxes “If the Council are serious in their claim that they neither support or not support the project they need to directly inform residents that the perception will continue that Council is partnering with Intrapac on this project while Keysborough Golf Club may be the frontman it is (developer) Intrapac that are pulling the strings and funding the effort – that is why Cr Rhonda Garad’s push for Council lawyers to act is so vital for public confidence in the Council.” Basketball Australia acknowledge Sharon Thoonen for Monday 9 September as he shifts his focus on his career in the commercial property industry He will not be contesting the upcoming 2024 local government elections “I’m now at a stage with the three is a reserve I’m probably the most proud of at the moment “The ward when I was first elected had dilapidated infrastructure clubs were saying they had a significant amount of issues to do with the funding of the infrastructure of the sports ground and community facilities.” The Wachter Reserve playground opened to the public earlier this year and more works are underway as part of the Frederick Wahroonga Avenue The fire was deemed under control at 10.31am Victoria Police were called to the scene for traffic control CFA issued an advice message warning of smoke in the area A pair of four-bedroom townhouses have been approved on a flood-prone A majority of Greater Dandenong councillors at a 9 December meeting voted in favour of the permit at 76 Kingsclere Avenue The double-storey dwellings would replace the existing home and outhouses on the 638 square-metre corner block at Kingsclere and Kirribilli avenues Among the objector concerns were increased traffic and on-street parking pressures visual bulk and exacerbating flooding in the area said there was a lack of traffic counts and flood maps for the area “Across the road the pipes burst in the day time It has happened twice within a short time frame.” Statutory planning coordinator Richard Stevenson said there were no overall flood concerns with permit conditions requiring stormwater discharge at pre-development peaks Stevenson said he had no information on the capacity of the area’s stormwater pipes “Ultimately the conditions of permit should be sufficient to accommodate.” Councillor Phillip Danh encouraged the council to investigate flooding issues but voted in favour of the permit due to its compliance with the planning scheme He noted the five proposed on-site parking spaces exceeded minimum requirements The proposal respected neighbourhood character made efficient use of the corner block and delivered much needed extra housing “I believe that the merits of this development is appropriate and reflects the desirability of those who want to live in Keysborough.” Cr Danh said his “greatest hesitation” was due to the high likelihood of VCAT approving the project It would cost the council “tens of thousands of dollars” on a VCAT case that’s unlikely to succeed “This is disappointing for people to hear this the likelihood of success (at VCAT) is so low – and that is the plain truth of the matter.” Cr Sean O’Reilly said if the proposal was refused the council would have to “refuse most planning applications” Cr Rhonda Garad said “hard-working ratepayers” and their serious concerns on flooding “up to their kneecaps” deserved to be considered We know it’s an established residential area … that pipes are not coping right now with the intense rain events “We’re going to take away land which is currently absorbing much of that rain and we’re going to cover almost 50 per cent of the land with concrete and impermeable surfaces.” Cr Garad said the development’s visual bulk was a “dramatic” change to the neighbourhood It would also add to the area’s “vast” traffic volumes A Greater Dandenong Council report stated the established residential area was “well suited for medium density housing” The application was consistent with the “emerging pattern of development” and neighbourhood character I understand and agree that my personal information will be collected, stored and “Afterwards they create a WhatsApp group to share information about any suspicious activity in the area “Additionally one or two residents are appointed to develop a direct relationship with the local Public Order Response Team continue to swarm Melbourne’s suburbs every single night – specifically targeting burglars and car thieves as the Air Wing watches from above “Police continue to see far too many properties burgled and cars stolen due to unlocked doors and windows so we urge the community to take simple measures such as checking your home and car is locked before heading to bed.” Jay Mackenzie continued his winning run through regional New South Wales in the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series by claiming a share of the Highlands Pro-Am title with fellow NSW professional Lincoln Tighe on Friday A 5-under-par 65 on the Mittagong layout gave Mackenzie and Tighe a two-shot margin over Andrew Evans with Corey Lamb and Cameron Bell a further shot back in a share of fourth It’s a third win is as many weeks for Mackenzie who was also victorious at Griffith and Leeton in the Riverina totalling a combined 25-under-par thanks to five rounds in the 60s it was his first adidas PGA Pro-Am Series title since 2023 There was a five-way tie for the lead at Highlands Golf Club until Mackenzie who started his round on the par-5 14th hole birdied the short par-4 10th and par-3 12th to move clear of the pack He finished with seven birdies for the afternoon who is working on getting a more dependable swing finished in a flourish with birdies on his final two holes to capture his share of top of the leaderboard Tighe said: “I haven’t been hitting it great but I was really keen to come out here today and have a bit It’s a bit weird to be that keen to get out so early and play golf You just miss it when you don’t play Fond memories and some last-minute fine-tuning paved the way for Andrew Martin to claim a one-stroke win at the Symes Motors Axedale Pro-Am at Axedale Golf Club Just 20 minutes from his home-town of Bendigo Martin started brilliantly paired with great mate Marcus Fraser holding on over the back nine to win with a round of 4-under 65 Two late bogeys cruelled Alex Edge’s hopes of an adidas PGA Pro-Am Series win finishing outright second with Bradley Kivimets at 3-under 66 While he finished well down the leaderboard Michael Bainbridge delivered one of the day’s highlights it was back-to-back birdies around the turn that ultimately proved the difference A birdie at the 335-metre par-4 ninth saw Martin turn in 4-under pushing out to an even larger advantage with birdie at the 309m par-4 10th While that would be Martin’s last birdie of the day – there was a lone bogey at the par-3 14th – it would prove just enough to claim victory but it’s one of my home courses back here,” said Martin “It’s been a bit quiet and then to come out and practise for a couple of days and come here and shoot that “I probably played better on my back nine and probably didn’t score as good “Knowing the course definitely helps on a few shots Definitely the more you play here helps but even then you still sort of can’t get your head around it “The course is probably the best I’ve ever seen it Next up: Belmont Golf and Bowls Club Pro-Am A spectacular stretch around the turn has secured Aaron Townsend a share of victory at the two-day Leeton Golf Club SunRice Pro-Am On the back of his first adidas PGA Pro-Am Series win of the year at Griffith on Friday Jay Mackenzie held the Round 1 lead at Leeton courtesy of a 7-under 65 on Saturday He began a bogey-free second round of 4-under 68 with seven straight pars opening the door just enough for Townsend to make a move Three bogeys against two birdies in his first seven holes stalled his charge but birdie at the par-5 eighth would prove to be the catalyst for a brilliant finish Mackenzie needing to birdie the last to join him the pair finishing two strokes clear of Toby Walker (67) As first Townsend and then Mackenzie came through the eighth hole Mackenzie looked like following up his first win of the season at Griffith with a second at Leeton He held a two-stroke advantage after both made birdie at the 468-metre par 5 but it would prove to be a launch pad for Townsend It was the first of six birdies in seven holes for the Newcastle native that gave him a one-stroke advantage He would hold that until he waited for Mackenzie to finish who birdied the par-4 18th to claim a share of victory “I’m trying to work a little harder on some putting consistency,” said Townsend My good is good but my poor is very poor so the last couple of days have been good I made too many bogeys over the last two days but there was enough good stuff that I’ve enough to take out of that.” Jay Mackenzie became a winner on the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series for the seventh consecutive year after scoring a four-stroke victory in the B&C Plumbing Griffith Charity Pro-Am With just one bogey across the 36 holes at Griffith Golf Club the NSW professional shot rounds of 68-65 to finish at 9-under-par and secure his first title for 2025 after a mixed campaign on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Back travelling in his grandad’s old troop carrier after it had some repairs Mackenzie set up camp next to the driving range at the Riverina course giving him easy access to work even more on his game which started to turn around towards the end of the Tour season After starting the second round two shots from the overnight lead held jointly by Hart and James Gibellini Mackenzie birdied two of his first five holes to keep him well in touch However it was a run of three birdies in five holes on the back nine – 11 13 and 15 – which saw the former WA PGA champion kick clear Hart played the back nine in 2-over and Gibellini faltered with four bogeys on the way back to the clubhouse Mackenzie said: “It’s nice to finally play some good golf You have to chip and putt well around here I just hit driver on every hole and tried to find the fairways Victorian duo Darcy Brereton and Toby Walker could not be separated on the quirky 12-hole layout both finishing at 5-under at the Orora Yenda Pro-Am Yenda marks the official start of a long adidas PGA Pro-Am Series with Walker and Brereton getting off to the perfect start Both players did the bulk of their scoring early taking advantage of the two par-5s on the opening six holes Walker and Brereton both found themselves 4-under at “the turn” and certainly the hot players on the course Queenslander Dillon Hart fired a bogey free 4-under round to secure solo third ahead of a trio of players tied fourth at 3-under While Walker was able to keep bogeys off the card coming in he was only able to make one further birdie at the eighth Brereton managed to get it to 5-under with a birdie at the par-3 seventh but an untimely bogey at the same par-5 eighth Walker managed to birdie dropped the Royal Melbourne member back to 4-under With Walker already safely in the clubhouse Brereton knew he needed to make up a shot coming in to tie and managed to do just that at the short par-4 11th “It was very different to what I’ve been playing recently “I think I relished trying to play something a little different and yeah I was in play pretty much off every tee really “Made a little bit of a messy bogey there “I actually love playing 12 holes,” said Walker I don’t have to walk around 18-holes to spend five hours out here and it’s a lot more enjoyable “I’ve just gotten a lot better mentally I’ve been working with my coach of 14 years Timmy Wood and it’s just doing the one percenters really well of late “Today I just hit driver as hard as I could and just prayed it got a good bounce near the green and I could chip it up and hole a couple of putts.” March 27 at The National Golf Club and then Qualifying School at Moonah Links in April “It feels great,” Gill said of his breakthrough result “I was refreshing the scores non-stop all afternoon but happy to do it.” Gill finished one shot clear of a trio of regular Tour players Aiden Didone and Jayden Cripps all sharing second with rounds of 5-under 67 An opening birdie at the par-5 14th was the ideal start but it wasn’t until Gill got to the front nine that his round gathered momentum He birdied the par-3 second and then made three in succession from the par-5 fourth his final birdie at his second-to-last hole the difference at day’s end so I played a bit more cautious than probably what I would have which probably worked out in my favour,” said Gill Everything just sort of turned out in my favour.” He may not play often but when he does Michael Choi is invariably tough to beat at the Bendigo Bank Dingley Village Community – Keysborough Golf Club Pro-Am at Keysborough Golf Club Choi past decade as Jake Hughes (68) settled for second and Toby Walker shot 4-under 69 to snare third Choi’s round gathered momentum around the turn He moved into red figures with birdie at the par-5 16th and then peeled off four on the trot from the par-4 18th closing the deal with further birdies at seven and 10 “This course just fits my eye and I enjoy coming out here every year,” said Choi “Always just have good vibes when I’m out here so it was nice to get another win under the belt “I think it was like maybe four birdies in a row in the middle of the round and then a couple late.” Next upDe stumble to shoot 8-under 64 and win by five strokes “I was just taking inspiration from Harry Crowe yesterday with a double and shoot nine (under),” said Page Ed Donoghue and Wade Lowrie shared second at 3-under par but there was no catching Page at the top of the leaderboard Turning point: With birdies at his opening two holes the double bogey at the par-3 fifth dropped Page back to even par He was back at 2-under with birdies at seven and nine but it was the birdie on 10 and eagle at the par-5 11th that separated Page from the pack That he backed that up with another eagle just four holes later made it a simple procession to the clubhouse over the closing holes Quick quotes“I wanted to get going early and did but then I copped a pretty gnarly double bogey down five “I was hitting it all right off the tee and managed to get that going and didn’t make any more mistakes They were playing slightly downwind when I played those par 5s I had 9-iron and sand wedge in and stuck it pretty single council ward after an electoral boundary review Local Government Minister Melissa Horne announced that she accepted the outcomes of the review for City of Greater Dandenong and nine other councils The ward boundary changes apply for the upcoming October elections The redistribution was prompted by the growing number of voters in the new estates in Keysborough the VEC rejected a controversial alternative model that would move Greater Dandenong’s entire green wedge and Dandenong South industrial area into Dandenong Ward This model also attracted strong criticism from an overwhelming majority of submitters including Willow Lodge Village Residents Association the Defenders of the South East Green Wedge Keysborough South Ward Greens councillor Rhonda Garad and former Greens councillor Matthew Kirwan The submitters argued it would set up a conflict for the ward’s councillor representing the industrial and green wedge communities The VEC instead opted for minor changes to Greater Dandenong’s ward boundaries The new layout includes adding the Lyndhurst green wedge area to the Keysborough and Bangholme green wedge areas in the Keysborough South Ward the Keysborough Ward will extend into a section of the newer residential estates south of Dandenong Bypass (which were formerly in Keysborough South Ward) This was a “potential drawback” given the bypass was a “large physical boundary” and the different housing stock on either side of the bypass Four of the 11 wards will retain the same boundaries Springvale Central and Springvale South will move slightly south Greater Dandenong councillor Rhonda Garad has announced she won’t defend her Keysborough South Ward seat at the upcoming council elections the outspoken Greens councillor for the past four years announced she was stepping down with a “heavy heart but great optimism for the future” the most rewarding aspect has been engaging with so many of you on local issues such as trees “Looking at a picture of myself from before I started on the council I see a few more wrinkles and grey hairs.” Cr Garad nominated the upgraded Westwood Boulevard park and Picnic Park and the future Keysborough South Community Hub as among the significant projects in her term Much was still to be done such as traffic safety at Keysborough Gardens Primary School more pedestrian crossings on Perry and Church roads and removing the Keysborough South rates levy Cr Garad had temporarily stood down from councillor duties last year to contest the Mulgrave by-election for the Green she endorsed a Greens “new generation” candidate Isabella Do “She’s a really good fit in that community with strong local ties and business skills,” Cr Garad told Star Journal To have councillors sit there for 20 to 30 years really is not in the interests of the community Keysborough’s historic church is set to go on the “open market” after Greater Dandenong Council pulled out of a potential purchase councillors voted against buying the 147-year-old building and a younger wooden church building at 176 Chapel Road The church – formerly known as Keysborough Methodist Church – was built by the community in 1877 It’s one of the few surviving historic buildings in the suburb “Council has carefully considered the benefits and challenges of purchasing this land and on balance has determined not to pursue the purchase,” a council spokesperson said It ends more than two years of fruitless negotiations between the council and owner Uniting Church in Australia to preserve the decayed and vandalized building An Uniting Church in Australia spokesperson stated that it intended to “sell on the open market” and “will commence this process shortly” “This is disappointing as such a long time was spent on these negotiations “If the council had purchased the property a public open space would have been made available to the community and a community group would have taken ownership of the two churches on the site.” The church has continued to be broken into by vandals despite fences being installed around the property Several stained-glass windows have been broken “We have taken reasonable steps to secure the site and will continue to do so while it remains in our ownership,” the church spokesperson said The move has dashed hopes of a community group who wished to renovate and use the site as a public facility and open space one of the group’s directors and a Greater Dandenong councillor did not vote on the issue on 27 May due to a conflict of interest She was disappointed in the “short-sighted” decision by her councillor colleagues “This historic church has really strong significance to the local community The Keysborough South and broader community will be disappointed.” missed opportunity” to snap up a “very reasonable” and below market-value offer from the Uniting Church “Keysborough South is a completely brand-new suburb It has almost no understanding of its history “The purchase would have guaranteed the preservation of the church building and Sunday School building next to it “Generations have moved through the church with births It holds community memories and knowledge – we won’t get that back.” Cr Garad said the community group’s aim was to absorb all of the financial risk and outlays in renovating and running the proposed facility The possibilities for the site included as a gathering place “There’s no other green space at that top end of Chapel Road – it’s our last bite of the cherry “They’ve lost the opportunity to convert a much loved and appreciated historical building into a community asset.” Cr Garad said she wasn’t sure who would now buy the church which is under a local heritage protection overlay “It will cost a lot of money to bring the church back to even a state of structural stability.” Another of the group’s directors is historian Christine Keys – whose family were instrumental in the building of the church in the 19th century She said the council’s decision was “frustrating” and “annoying” after “nearly three years of going backwards and forwards” “What it means is that the council is not interested in heritage To just let an 1877 church go – it’s an attack on heritage.” The structure is the “only link” to the district’s early pastoral history “The Methodist Church has been in Keysborough South through the Keys family who originally invited a Methodist minister from Brighton here “Until the church was built they held (church) in the Keys’s home They were instrumental in getting the church built.” Ms Keys hoped there may be a chance of negotiating directly for a handover from Uniting Church The Uniting Church-affiliated charity Mission Liaison Group which stores shipping containers of overseas aid onsite MLG convener John Connan said he’d be “devastated” if the church was demolished “It’s one of the three remaining historic buildings in Keysborough including the former primary school and the Keys family home “It seems that heritage is something we can forget about in Australia.” No alternative location for the MLG has been identified A MAN was arrested in Keysborough last week in connection to an (@3aw693) Building is set to start within months on the long-awaited $22.9 million Keysborough South Community Hub Greater Dandenong Council formally selected Melbcon Pty Ltd to build the “state of the art” hub at the corner of Chapel and Villiers roads in Tatterson Park The hub has been in the making for at least eight years since detailed planning and consultation in 2015-16 The hub also includes early years childrens services for the 19,000-plus suburb population There will be play areas with a basketball half-court Greater Dandenong city planning director Paul Kearsley acknowledged the council meeting that the project’s delivery was “overdue” He expected works to begin in May-June 2023 The cost had come “within reason” of the pre-tender estimate of $21.5 million and within budget Keysborough South resident Nina Kelly has been among a committed group advocating for the hub “The long wait was over“ for not just children and parents but a growing number of older residents who will visit the centre “The construction announcement benefits our entire community improving inclusive facilities,“ Ms Kelly said many older residents will now have access to this ’third-space’ community facility to meet their needs within walking distance “This group of our community is no longer a second thought.“ Another at the project’s forefront was former councillor Matthew Kirwan who said the project had been “officially going for longer than eight years” the lack of community centre and childrens services in the area was strongly raised intergenerational” hub in Keysborough South was endorsed by the council in February 2014 “It has taken a long time but for the residents’ sake we have finally got there.” Mr Kirwan said the “ground-breaking” design linked childrens services and other services with a single foyer This “avoided the downside of many community hubs like the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre which are effectively two buildings side by side” “Another leading aspect will be the large amount of space for informal use creating the largest community lounge in Melbourne which will also contain a library space.” Cr Rhonda Garad said the hub would become the “heart and centre” of the area – a place to “meet She paid tribute to residents who continued to “advocate fervently” and “never gave up the fight” “Covid has set this back enormously but we have still battled on.” Cr Tim Dark said there were a lot of adjustments to ensure the hub would be a popular “hang out” There was “just nothing” for people to go to other than Parkmore and Keysborough South shopping centres “To finally get to a stage where this is going to be built is phenomenal Croydon-based firm Melbcon has also recently been selected by Greater Dandenong Council to build the $9 million Ross Reserve mayor” of Keysborough estate Crystal Waters is for sale as his family cut ties with land it has owned for more than 90 years pig and vegetable farmer Albert Cochrane bought a 6ha slice of Keysborough Lilydale Quarry linked to Dame Nellie Melba But with suburbia creeping in and farms moving out the family has slowly sold off its holdings to developers said after having an 8ha piece of the former farm turned into the Crystal Waters estate Mr Cochrane’s home is surrounded by four titles of open land The home’s refined interior is a far cry from what the old farmhouse was like He built a new home for himself there – on the waterfront of what used to be their old dam “He built the house so he could see people walking past along the water and would chat with them,” Ms Cochrane said and still thought of people as on his land So people knew him as the mayor of Crystal Waters.” She said she would always remember picnics with her nan corralling herself and her 10 cousins at the bottom of a paddock The home has been designed with indoor-outdoor living in mind open-plan living zone is perfectly suited to family life as is The property would also always be the place where her forebears briefly decided against replacing their horse-drawn plough with a tractor because “they will never catch on” prompting the family to sell their last piece of land as Barry Plant director Tim Stickley anticipates high developer demand from those looking to build a home on three vacant blocks attached to the main residence “It’s a good family home and very spacious.” A well-appointed kitchen is expected to wow families though developers are tipped to win the keys to the home a study and an open-plan living area with polished floorboards MORE: How much more you pay for a house in top school zones Gormandale: Melbourne buyers line up for Gippsland valley ‘oasis’ with private river Denis Pagan’s revamped childhood home for sale in Carlton A 101-lot housing estate in Chapel Road, Keysborough has been approved by the state’s planning tribunal despite Greater Dandenong Council’s opposition. The developer Peet appealed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal for a permit for its ‘Keysborough Townhouses’ project on 4.1 hectares of L-shaped former farmland at 182 Chapel Road. The site abuts the 145-year-old Keysborough Methodist Church building. It comes despite Greater Dandenong councillors voting down the proposal due to concerns about traffic, scale of development, emergency vehicle access and impact on wetlands to the north. Greater Dandenong councillor Rhonda Garad feared the wider ramifications of the VCAT decision. Chapel Road’s heavy peak traffic would be “severely exacerbated” by the project and about another 330 dwellings planned at four super sites at 182, 185, 199-209 and 220 Chapel Road to come. The busy pick-up and drop-off times at nearby Keysborough Gardens Primary School were set to become a “nightmare”, she said. “We’re heading to a perfect storm as a number of estates are coming online in a year and a half. It’s a slow-moving catastrophe. “And there’s nothing the council can do about it – Chapel Road can’t be widened, we can’t push back on the number of dwellings.” She said more frequent PT bus services were needed, otherwise traffic would become a “car park”. However at the VCAT appeal, the council didn’t object to Peet’s argument that traffic volumes could be accommodated, including future development at 198 Chapel Road. VCAT member Cindy Wilson ruled on 23 August that the proposal was not an overdevelopment. It accorded with the Keysborough South Development Plan and its “network of wetlands, flora and fauna habitat corridors and generous areas of linked open space”, Ms Wilson stated. The medium-density, two-storey townhouses were apt for the incremental-change ‘greenfield’ site, she found. The site was close to an “activity centre” of supermarket and shops, as well as the school and a Chapel Road bus route. Ms Wilson noted the site’s 120-metre parkland as well as tree reserves to the north, west and east, including all seven River Red Gums on the land. Peet had argued for the removal of four of the River Red Gums. Ms Wilson ruled that all should be retained due to their ecological and habitat value. However, Peet was granted a permit to remove an additional black wattle tree on the western side. Ms Wilson was satisfied with the estate design’s set back more than 40 metres from the historic church next door. She said the lack of diversity of housing, including just one two-bedroom dwelling, was “not ideal” but not sufficient to reject the proposal or require more two bedroom homes. Multiple bedrooms less than three metres wide were “small” but not failing standards. She also dismissed arguments about the lack of plans for stormwater drainage and earthworks. The council raised concerns about Peet’s removal of 11 trees, including two of “high value”, during the permit application process. Peet countered that no permit was required, and verbal authority was given from council officers. “I do not condone an approach whereby notable vegetation on the land is identified … and instead of the design responding to that vegetation, it is removed,” Ms Wilson stated. She didn’t reject the application on those grounds, noting no permit was required to remove the trees and that the proposed landscaping was “extensive”. The estate includes a subdivision of 37 empty blocks of between 301 and 475 square metres. Buildings on those lots are subject to future permits.
