A new chapter will begin for the former Colmont School in January 2025
as it transitions into an International Maarif Schools of Australia campus—an independent institution renowned for its focus on bilingual education
Colmont was known as The Kilmore International School (TKIS)
one of the few schools in Victoria to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) instead of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)
Its short closure notice left more than 300 families scrambling to find a new school within days
residents and politicians have been rallying for the campus to be used as a public secondary school
When the school became available for purchase in October 2023
International Maarif Schools of Australia Business Manager Nail Aykan said the foundation seized the chance to acquire the campus without hesitation
“The Turkish community was eagerly looking forward to an International Maarif School opening in Victoria
after first opening in Sydney some five years ago,” he said
“Many young Turkish families have been relocating to Wallan
hence there has been a sizeable growing community close to Kilmore.”
Set to launch first with its primary school classes
enrolment is expected to steadily increase each year
The Kilmore campus will be Australia’s second International Maarif school to open
The International Maarif Schools of Australia organisation is part of a global network that spans 55 countries
managing over 450 schools and one university
the school’s curriculum will include language and cultural studies
with Turkish as a mandatory component of the school’s bilingual education
Islamic and Qur’an studies will also be covered in the school’s curriculum
this curriculum offers multiple benefits,” Mr Aykan said
“It will prepare students to become active and responsible citizens who contribute positively to society
“It also strengthens community ties by promoting values of inclusivity and civic responsibilities.”
the institution will open its doors to all Kilmore families and those from surrounding areas
meaning students from any background and religion can attend the school without being restricted to a designated enrolment zone
Suleyman Kor has been appointed as principal of the new school
and will bring over 30 years of experience in the education sector to the position
The school is currently taking expressions of interest for enrolments

KILMORE are two from two in the Northern Football Netball League division three men’s competition after accounting for Heidelberg West by 20 points on Saturday afternoon
A fast start at Heidelberg Park saw the Blues kick the opening five goals of the afternoon as they shot out to a 27-point lead at quarter time
Heidelberg West did plenty of attacking in the second term but could only manage two goals from 10 scoring shots
while the Blues battled manfully to add one goal in the term to hold a 15-point lead at the main break
Heidelberg West kicked the opening goal of the third term and closed the gap to seven points
But Kilmore look to be a different outfit in 2025
kicking four goals in red time to take a match-winning 31-point lead at the final change
The Hawks asked many questions in the final term as they reduced the margin to 18 points
but it was Kilmore’s day as they held on to win 11.11 (77) to 7.15 (57)
Josh Coe took the points in a thrilling ruck battle with Jarryd Coulson
Jesse Taylor and Josh Alford were also named in the best
It makes for an intriguing round four battle with Kinglake
after the Lakers took a standout result in recording an 18-point victory over Epping
Laurimar took a 61-point victory over Mernda
while near-unbackable premiership favourites Fitzroy Stars took a 131-point win over Old Eltham
Netball will return for the final round of grading on Friday night
a quiet reverence fell over Dianella Hostel as residents
and community members gathered to pay tribute to those who served
Kilmore District Hospital became the heart of Northern Health’s annual Anzac service– a moving ceremony steeped in history
Northern Health’s Anzac service has been a tradition rooted in reflection
Following the voluntary amalgamation of Northern Health and Kilmore District Hospital in November last year
this year’s ceremony was proudly hosted in Kilmore for the first time
The service was led by Master of Ceremonies Jennifer Gilham
Divisional Director Medicine and Cancer Services
Ms Gilham reminded attendees of Anzac Day’s enduring significance
Gallipoli was the site of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War,” Ms Gilham said
we honour the 60,000 Australians who died and the 156,000 wounded or taken prisoner in that war.”
Ms Gilham also acknowledged the often- overlooked sacrifices of over 800 Aboriginal Australians who served at Gallopoli
and the more than 3,000 Australian villain nurses who volunteered during World War I
Northern Health Chief Executive Debra Bourne delivered the Anzac address
reflecting on the heroism of wartime nurses and the growing partnership between Kilmore District Hospital and Northern Health
“Their bravery left an indelible mark on the broader medical field,” Ms Bourne said
their selflessness remains too often overshadowed.”
The event brought together a wide cross-section of the community
Whittlesea Township Choir and the Ukulele Kilmore Group performed heartfelt renditions
adding a soulful soundtrack to the morning’s remembrance
Three words that describe Kilmore’s Sydney Street during peak hours—or any hour
for that matter—as commuters and heavy vehicle drivers utilise an unsuitable and unsustainable road as a transit path
it’s no wonder that discussions around the Kilmore Bypass pipe dream have once again stirred
as residents wonder whether this much needed infrastructure will ever be built
with the first official commitment made by the Kennett Government in October 1999
Though promises seem to be made and broken with each election cycle or budget release (the Victorian 2018-19 Budget
allocated $20 million to progress land acquisition for the bypass which is yet to be spent
while the 2024-2025 Budget delayed the project by another year) Mitchell Shire Council (MSC) continues to have high hopes for the bypass
even considering the location of the anticipated road in the 2015 Kilmore Structure Plan
almost a decade after that plan was released
Transport Victoria released a statement announcing that Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny had finally ‘used her powers … to prepare
and approve [a] Planning Scheme Amendment’ to ‘facilitate the future coordinated development of the Kilmore Bypass Stage One project’
The confirmed route for the bypass is to the west of the township
proposed to begin between Costellos and Willowmavin Road
cutting through the back of Kings Lane and Paynes Road
before curving around to meet the Northern Highway at the Wandong Road intersection
the project was merely in its planning stage
with ‘currently no plans for construction.’
A critical project for a community whose population is set to more than triple in the next 20 years
Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland voiced her concerns over the project’s decades-long delay
funding is being allocated to the Kilmore Bypass
yet there still remains no credible timeline for construction,” she said
“This is a project that has long been advocated for by the Kilmore community
the Kilmore community is sick of the excuses
a project expected to cost well over $10 billion
while a simple yet essential piece of regional infrastructure takes nearly 10 years to buy just two plots of land?”
Another project that appears to have taken precedence over the bypass itself is a roundabout at the intersection of the Northern Highway and Wandong Road
which will see approximately $18 million of the $35.3 million allocated to the bypass used for its construction
MSC Mayor Dougall dubbed the roundabout a ‘key element’ of the bypass
“A key element of the bypass is the intersection at Wandong Road,” he said
“Council’s understanding is that the funding for this intersection is included as part of the total bypass funding.”
Works for the intersection are expected to commence this year
with Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes stating the project was a priority
“We will begin to see action on the construction of the roundabout at the intersection of the Northern Highway and Wandong Road in 2025,” she said
“The pre-construction planning is complete
land acquisition and other approvals are advancing
it will dramatically improve safety and complements any future bypass works.”
Mayor Dougall stated council would continue to advocate strongly for the bypass
and invited residents to contact their local parliamentarians for support
“While the project remains in the planning phase
“Council has identified the Kilmore Bypass as one of its top priorities
and has been advocating for its development to ensure the town is equipped to manage future growth while maintaining its character and amenity
“Residents are encouraged to continue supporting this essential project by contacting their local MPs to express their desire for the bypass to become a reality.”
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) recently released its new boundaries
following a federal electoral redistribution that decreased the number of electorates in Victoria due to lower-than-expected population growth
this means that the area from the southern end of the Bylands locality boundary going north
will be redistributed into the electorate of Nicholls for the first time since the creation of the seat of McEwen
Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell said it was odd not to represent the people of Kilmore anymore
“It will feel very strange not having the Kilmore community in McEwen,” he said
“It’s been an area I have enjoyed representing
and there are some outstanding organisations and people in the area who have been absolutely fantastic to work with and represent
“This decision by the AEC will take effect as of the next election
which sadly means Kilmore residents will be forced to go to Shepparton to attend the office of their Federal MP.”
The redistribution re-establishes the entire Mernda locality within McEwen
while the Wollert locality is now fully included in the Scullin electorate

the Coalition’s failure to sway voters has
come under intense scrutiny.

Its lack of policies around property that resonated with voters has been a large part of that criticism.

Among those policies was a $5-billion infrastructure program to unlock up to 500,000 new homes

Jinding general manager of developments Andrew Ashwood said construction commencement was a major milestone for the community and the growth of Kilmore

Mr Birrell has been pounding the pavement speaking with locals and business owners to hear what matters to them and their community
Mr Birrell toured the Kilmore Men’s Shed and discussed the role of governments with students at St Patrick’s Primary School and met with many residents and local business owners
Mr Birrell said he was delighted the town of Kilmore was coming into the electorate of Nicholls
“I grew up on a property between Murchison and Toolamba and finished my secondary schooling in Kilmore as a boarder at Assumption College,” he said
“Before being elected to parliament in 2022
I studied agricultural science and worked as an agronomist until I became the chief executive of the committee for Greater Shepparton where I helped achieve significant infrastructure improvements for the Goulburn Valley.”
Mr Birrell said he wanted to see regional communities like Kilmore thrive
“I see Kilmore as a strong and proud regional town,” he said
“It’s growing fast and needs infrastructure to support that growth
but I am hearing locals say it needs to retain its regional identity and not become a northern suburb of Melbourne.”

Dylan Smith was driving along the same road he takes every day when he was involved in a car crash that left him in intensive care
The 18-year-old was heading home from work on July 9 when his car veered off the road
The car was written off and the significant damage left Dylan trapped with injuries
it wasn’t long before bystanders came across the crash and pulled over to assist
calling emergency services and checking on the Kilmore local
After being cut out of the vehicle by SES and CFA crews
Dylan was transported to Royal Melbourne Hospital by Ambulance Victoria (AV) paramedics
spending four days in the intensive care unit (ICU) before being moved to the trauma ward
Dylan said while he can’t remember the crash
he was thankful for everyone who helped save his life
“I wouldn’t have survived if all the bystanders hadn’t come across it and stopped to help,” he said
“I also want the paramedics to know how grateful I am for the support they gave me and the quick response they provided
I likely wouldn’t be here today without them.”
Dylan and his family reunited with the paramedics who responded to his case to express their thanks in person
AV Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedic Matt Arcieri said he knew Dylan’s injuries were serious from the moment he saw the incident
“We were dispatched Code 1 and as soon as we realised the high mechanism of the accident we called for backup,” he said
“It was a good team effort with the other emergency services to remove Dylan from the car
get him on the stretcher in the pelvis binder
we’re always thinking ahead about what injuries might be present that we can’t see and how to account for them
such as internal bleeding or pelvic injuries
It’s great to see him again and doing so well.”
Dylan has had to undergo surgery for the deep laceration to his face and to help mend his jaw
Dylan is determined to continue his recovery and has since returned to work and driving
“I’m doing a lot better now and that’s thanks to everyone who helped on that day,” he said
but I have great family support who have been there for me every single day.”

It's adjacent to sports fields and there are gardens and walking tracks for residents to explore
offering a beautiful and functional environment.”

Home / Healthy choices in Kilmore: Making it easier for staff to eat well
Kilmore District Hospital staff will soon have more access to healthier food options
thanks to the latest efforts aligned with the Victorian Government’s Healthy Choices Policy Directive for Public Health Services
The policy directive aims to improve the availability of healthy food and drink choices at public hospitals and health services
supporting the health and wellbeing of staff and visitors
Northern Health has embraced these guidelines to ensure a greater number of healthy food and drink choices are available across its facilities
food options available for staff to purchase at Kilmore District Hospital were analysed in depth using ‘FoodChecker’ software
which was developed by Nutrition Australia with support from the Victorian Government to assess how various public services align with the Healthy Choices Policy Directive
all vending machines and in-house food retail outlets at Kilmore District Hospital will offer at least 50 per cent green food options (those deemed the healthiest) and no more than 20 per cent red food options (foods that should be limited)
The catering provided at staff meetings and events across other Northern Health locations will also offer at least 50 per cent green foods and drinks and no red foods and drinks
These changes ensure that healthier choices are more accessible
encouraging better eating habits among staff and patients
The implementation has been overseen by key Northern Health staff
and Executive Sponsor for Healthy Choices at Northern Health
“It’s good to see how we have integrated the Healthy Choices Policy directives to be able to unite as one health service and engage Kilmore District Hospital
so that we are all working towards healthy outcomes for not only our patients but for our staff.”
Working in partnership with food providers such as Henry’s Café and the hospital’s in-house catering services
Northern Health is dedicated to enhancing the nutritional quality of food available to staff
This collaboration ensures that vending machines and meal options for catering are stocked with healthier choices
providing convenient and nutritious options throughout the day
These efforts reflect Northern Health’s ongoing commitment to creating a supportive environment for health and wellbeing

Last Friday marked a true full-circle moment in Kilmore as Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC
commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Hume and Hovell expedition and the 100th anniversary of the monument
the milestone event celebrated the 1824 expedition of explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hilton Hovell—an important journey that traversed what is now Mitchell Shire and continues to be a significant chapter in Victoria’s history
and community members at the event were Diane Henry
along with the Right Honourable Earl of Stradbroke Keith Rous
Governor Gardner said having descendants of Hovell and Lord Stradbroke added a meaningful dimension to the commemoration
and that we were able to have someone here who was a descendant of William Hovel,” she said
“There are all these threads that show not just what happened here a long time ago
but the fact that it continues into relationships
Ms Henry expressed her amazement at how many people remain deeply connected to the history
“I didn’t realise how important it was to everybody
from Sydney working her way back to Melbourne [following the trail]
the Governor visited the historic Old Kilmore Gaol
Governor Gardner said it had been a wonderful visit to the Mitchell Shire
“It’s such a vibrant shire … it’s so diverse
because it’s got everything from effectively the outer suburban growth corridor of Melbourne
as well as a very significant rural hinterland,” she said
“It’s a diverse set of communities that are a very significant part of the overall growth and the overall future of Victoria.”
MSC Councillor Andrea Pace recognised the rich layers of history embodied at the Hume and Hovell Monument
paying tribute to the Traditional Owners of the land and noting the profound changes that followed the explorers’ journey
“The event recognised both the achievements of Hume and Hovell and the resilience and culture of our First Nations people who have called this land home for tens of thousands of years,” she said
“The Old Kilmore Gaol and the Hume and Hovell Monument are symbols of Kilmore’s ability to honour its past while embracing the future.”

Off the scene for nearly a year this lightly raced well bred four year-old Fastnet Rock mare made a winning return at Kilmore on Friday as a short priced favourite and has a half-sister headed to Inglis Easter
Inez ran second at her first three starts last summer before taking on stakes company in the Group III VRC The Vanity when unplaced behind Grinzinger Belle
Sidelined since that run in February last year
Inez looked good in a recent barrier trial and was heavily supported by punters for her return in the 1104m maiden
Inez settled at the back of the field but produced a long sustained run to surge home and win by a length and a half

“She did a good job and while they might not have been top horses
she hadn’t had a race for a good while and I’m not sure what happened at the start
but she lengthened quite nice and won well,” said Lee Hope
“Now she’s cracked the maiden win we can look for higher and I think she will improve.”
Cory Parish had to go to Plan B after finding himself at the rear of the field
“She jumped average and then got squeezed up by both the inside and outside horses and I had wanted to be up close and just behind the leaders
so when that happened I thought let’s go o Plan B and not panic
just let her relax and once I got her to the outside after we turned for home she let down really well,” he said
A $700,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Colm Santry Bloodstock from Coolmore
Inez runs for Alpara Lodge and is the first foal and first winner for Group II winning high Chaparral (IRE) mare Bring Me Roses
a half-sister to Group III winner Face Value and to the dam of stakes-winner Diamond Earth
Inez and her dam Bring Me Roses were both bred by Dr Denis O’Brien and his wife Claire and were foaled and raised at Coolmore
Bring Me the Roses has a two year-old filly by Wootton Bassett (GB) that made $600,000 at Inglis Easter last year when bought by James Bester and has been exported to South Africa and her third foal is a yearling filly by Wootton Bassett that will be offered by Coolmore at Inglis Easter this year as Lot 309.
Bring Me the Roses produced a colt by Wootton Bassett last spring and is now in foal to Home Affairs.
