From local club to the SCG: Sam Konstas the 19-year-old’s journey redefining cricket in a multicultural Australia
The rise of a young Greek Australian batsman has set the cricketing world alight—after debuting for Australia as a opener
It’s not just his skill but his Achillean confidence at the crease. His attacking style has enthralled the crowd and rattled . Vince Rugari, in the SMH
has gone beyond the natural excitement and spectacle to tell a story that speaks to raw talent and the power of community sport and multiculturalism
Young Konstas lit up Boxing Day with his audacious ramp shot
h brushed off Virat Kohli’s glare with indifference in front of a roaring MCG crowd
the Kingsgrove crew watched in awe like the rest of the nation
The cricketing world has glimpsed fleeting hints of the star Konstas could become for Australia
they’ve seen the feature reel says Rugari
Sport is the first bridge to integration and acceptance
which until recently has remained an Anglocentric sport in Australia
Rugari also brings it back to community and the way the former NSW Premier
a volunteer at the Kingsgrove Cricket Club in Sydney’s south
“When word reached him about this prodigious sporting family from the area: Billy
from one of Sydney’s most Greek pockets
They fitted the bill nicely and formed part of the influx of new players
and Indian backgrounds,” writes Rugari
Shaunaugh Crowe “alerted” Iemma to the existence of the Konstas family
The Konstas kids were “naturals at sport: soccer
any type of sport.” Crowe lobbied Iemma to get them into the club as they “loved” cricket
who became Konstas’s coach at club and representative levels
took the twins—Sam and Johnny—for a training session with a group of other new applicants not long after they signed up
“We’ve got three special ones here,” Subodh said
“you need a humble village institution
such as the Kingsgrove Cricket Club,” writes Rugari
This young Greek Australian has shattered expectations
Partnering with South Asian batsman Usman Khawaja to open the fourth Test against India
they demonstrated that cricket no longer belongs to one cultural narrative in Australia
Konstas’s early cricket journey at Kingsgrove came to an abrupt end—not due to any lack of skill
but because his talent demanded a bigger stage
he was already competing against adults in grade cricket for St George
On occasions when he wasn’t selected for St George
he returned to Kingsgrove to play for their fourth-grade team
where he clinched a premiership in 2019 alongside Johnny
the whole Greek Australian community and the rest of Australia will be with him
The occasion will also be tinged with sadness—Subodh died
Konstas scored a century for Australia’s under-19s—and on Boxing Day
when he made his debut with an instant-classic innings of 60
it was 11 months to the day since Subodh died,” writes Rugari
St George have claimed the T20 Cup for the first time in 10 years
lifting the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup at North Sydney Oval on Sunday night
Fairfield-Liverpool won the toss and elected to bat
Opener Jaydyn Simmons hit 41 from 32 before he was the 6th to fall by the 13th over
With an undefeated 65 from 37 from Coby Holland and an unbeaten 8th wicket stand of 57 with Luke Hodges (11)
While St George wobbled as they lost three wickets in eight balls
St George wrapped things up with a handful of overs to spare
picking up 18 runs in the 15th over before Fairfield-Liverpool delivered three no-balls and three wides to see 26 runs notched up as St George got to 169 in the 18th
Bankstown battled St George for a spot in the final
After winning the toss and electing to bowl
Blake McDonald (31) and Luke Bartier (29) delivered solid knocks to see St George finish with 185 after twenty overs
Bankstown’s Ryan Felsch blasted 23 off 9 before Zeeshaan Ahmed scored a half-century from 34 balls
but the loss of five wickets for just 24 runs proved too costly
seeing Bankstown bow out of the title fight
The second semi-final saw the undefeated Northern District go head-to-head with a determined Fairfield-Liverpool
faced an early setback with the dismissal of Jaydyn Simmons
Nick Carruthers stabilised the innings with a solid 55 off 26
and Yuvraj Sharma delivered an aggressive 85 off 44 balls to see Fairfield set a target of 216
belting 24 off 10 before falling to Jaiveer Singh Dhanoa in the third over
The early promise faded as Northern District suffered a middle-order collapse
Valuable runs from Ben Mike (30) and Toby Gray (34) brought the side within striking distance
Ross Pawson blasted 26 off just 11 balls in a late bid to close the gap
but the mounting run rate proved too much to overcome

NSW police officers closed in on a unit in Kingsgrove last Friday to arrest travel agent Zahra Rachid who is accused of swindling customers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars
Rachid who ran Travel World Sydney – based in Arncliffe – appeared on Nine’s A Current Affair last month after devastated customers said they had booked trips with the agent only to be given fake itineraries
Following the show, officers from St George Police Area Command in Sydney’s south established Strike Force Bail to investigate the reports. Yesterday the NSW police released footage of them arresting Rachid
The 53-year-old was reportedly arrested at a complex on Mashman Ave
Kingsgrove before she was taken to Kogarah Police Station and charged with 16 counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception
She was initially refused bail before appearing at Sutherland Local Court where she was given strict conditional bail
a customer alleged she had been swindled out of a staggering $160,00 by Rachid
Nicole Vris said she used Travel World Sydney to book a holiday to Greece for 35 members of her family
“To plan this holiday it takes a very long time
to save your money for the ticket and for your spending money,” Vris told Nine’s A Current Affair
The family say they paid Travel World Sydney the $160,000 only to later find out that their booking confirmations weren’t real
obviously they asked us for numbers that were on that itinerary
we were not in the system.” a visibly distressed Vris told Nine
She says most of the families will now no longer be able to attend the family reunion
“A lot of families will never recover from this financially
Meanwhile another customer – Fatima Awada – said she used the agency to book a trip to Germany
She said that she realised something was wrong when she hard the agency had been shut down
After ringing the airline she was distressed to discover her trip had been cancelled
my mum and her kids as well,” Awada is reported to have said
that’s nearly $15k of our money.”

A serial tyre slasher has racked up $40,000 worth of damages after being caught on CCTV rampaging through a south-west Sydney street
Locals claim the unknown bandit punctured about 200 tyres on 100 cars from about 2.30am on Saturday in the suburb of Kingsgrove
slashing dozens of tyres in just seconds before moving on
Locals claim vehicles parked on at least five different streets had been targeted and that there were dozens of victims
It comes as residents continue to vent frustration at what they claim has been a repeated occurrence on the quiet street
'These tyre slashers are out of control. Obviously, they know the area well...They need to be caught,' one local told 9News.
'Pretty disgusting and putrid act by whoever did it in the community,' another said.
Others discussed online gathering information about the incidences, with CCTV footage of the alleged lashings being posted.
A replacement tyre currently costs on average about $200 each, meaning residents were left with a bill of about $40,000.
In a statement, NSW Police said they were investigating reports parked vehicles were damaged in the Kingsgrove area between 2.30am and 6am.
With inquiries ongoing, police urged anyone with dashcam footage from Caroline, Mashman, Northcott, Vivienne Streets to come forward.

It was 3am when 12-year-old Marlene Storz woke to find a man standing at the foot of her bed in July 1956
Her family were tucked up asleep in separate rooms of the south west Sydney home
thinking the shadowy figure was her brother.
The stranger was holding a razor blade in his hand
leaving gashes up to 15 centimetres long.
the man immediately jumped out of her window and made his escape
That morning was the first time David Joseph Scanlon attacked someone in their home
He'd later tell police he'd enter every house in a single street prowling around local suburbs for hours on end in the middle of the night.
"He started just as a peeping Tom climbing over fences and watching people through their windows," Glen Humphries
author of Night Terrors: The True Story of the Kingsgrove Slasher told Mamamia's True Crime Conversations podcast
"Then it escalates to him going into their house standing in their bedroom watching them sleep
or sitting on the lounge watching them as they get up to go to the toilet."
He'd go on to attack a total of 18 women and girls over three years
with the media of the time dubbing him the 'Kingsgrove slasher.'
If you drive through Kingsgrove and its surrounding suburbs today
you'll see prison style bars on the ground-floor windows of some homes.
Designed to stop the mysterious 'Kingsgrove slasher' of the 1950s from entering
As Humphries explained to True Crime Conversations
the hysteria at the time was very real with women taking to sleeping with weapons under their pillows
"Everybody thought any noise they heard outside was the slasher," he said.
21-year-old Lesley Coleman was attacked in her sleep after her boyfriend failed to shut the front door properly
Scanlon didn't just slice her bedsheets - he sliced her chest
groped her breasts with such force he left red marks and bruising and punched her in the face.
"Her teeth were all broken [and] she had to get surgery for other injuries to her face
There was also talk about blood being splattered on the wall and on the roof at the time," said Humphries
A seven-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl both had their pyjamas slashed in the night
but it wasn't until a 16-year-old victim caught a glimpse of Scanlon in her room that police had any kind of description to work with.
"She saw him walk to the window and look out..
the streetlight outside caught his face," said Humphries.
She told officers the man was aged between 20-25
he climbed through the window of Rosalie Meyer
slashed her pyjamas and hit her face with a block of wood several times.
"She obviously woke up at some stage because she had defence wounds on her fingers and hands from trying to ward off the blows," said Humphries.
the 'Kingsgrove slasher's' hunting ground extended to Sydney's north
which police would later find out was because Scanlon moved house for a brief period.
He also took a break for 455 days from slashing
later saying that was because "he had tried to calm down for the sake of his wife"
But pretty soon he was back prowling the familiar streets of south west Sydney
and a 64-year-old woman who was left with a 12 centimetre gash on her abdomen.
He'd attack five more victims before being caught by police in May 1959.
especially someone whose been a bogeyman walking around the area slashing people
But he just looked like an ordinary guy," Humphries told True Crime Conversations.
"Almost like a B-grade film actor in terms of his looks....he didn't look scary
Scanlon was a 29-year-old married office clerk with a normal 9-5 job in the city
take the train home - change into his 'prowling' outfit - and spend his evenings terrorising Sydney.
She'd even asked Scanlon to install slasher bars on their windows unaware that he actually had a key.
(he admitted to it straight up as soon as he was caught)
police took him home to tell his wife.
She'd been living with this guy and had absolutely no clue that anything was going on."
Scanlon pleaded guilty to 18 offences against women and girls and was sentenced to 18 years in jail.
The only explanation he gave for his crimes was that he loved the "thrill of the chase."
He was released in March 1970 after 10 years behind bars
went on to remarry and have children in NSW.
with Humphries telling True Crime Conversations his gravestone reads "loving father and grandfather," which by all accounts he was.
But he was also the Kingsgrove slasher - a man who instilled fear in the people of Sydney for three years
leaving many of his victims terrified of the night

First published in the Sydney Morning Herald on May 2
A 29-year-old Arncliffe clerk was named as the "Kingsgrove Slasher" by police in Kogarah Court yesterday
on three charges of breaking and entering and inflicting grievous bodily harm on women
He spent last night in Long Bay Gaol where he will remain until he appears again in court on May 22
told a packed courtroom that police alleged Scanlon was the "Kingsgrove Slasher"
whose room the Slasher tried to enter in July
"I woke up and saw him silhouetted at the window against the street light," she said
"The slightest noise at night is enough to bring me out in a cold sweat." December 9
He said Scanlon had admitted more than 20 offences
Scanlon was led into the courtroom handcuffed to Detective-Sergeant Brian Doyle
The handcuffs were taken off while he stood in the dock but he was again manacled when escorted out at the end of the five-minute hearing
He said only four words during the entire proceeding
sir" when asked by Mr Etherton whether he consented to the remand date
Scanlon wore a white shirt open at the collar
a green sweater and a grey sports coat and trousers
His manner throughout the hearing was quiet and subdued
she awoke and saw a "dark shadow" at the foot of the bed

The courtroom was packed to see Scanlon appear on the charges
Pressmen and local residents crowded around Kogarah police station from 8am waiting for a chance to see Scanlon
Schoolchildren and office-workers joined the crowd at lunch time
When Scanlon was led into court at 2pm about 50 people had gathered in the street and the small public gallery was packed with Pressmen and women
Sergeant Boyd told Mr Etherton police would oppose bail
Investigator points to footprints believed to belong to the Kingsgrove Slasher
"Could it be noted that we allege that the defendant is the person who has been referred to very publicly as the 'Kingsgrove Slasher'"
"Your Worship appreciates that there has been an enormous amount of police work involved in the investigations and many more inquiries have to be carried out
"The defendant was arrested at Turella last last evening in dense scrub and had some minutes previously been observed in two houses nearby
the defendant has been charged only with three matters but he has made more than 20 admissions of guilt and there will be a large number of other charges
He said the remand was needed to make those inquiries and that even on the remand date there might be another application for a further remand
Mr Etherton refused Scanlon bail and remanded him to May 22

The decision goes against industry trends which have seen a number of branches of various banks close at Kingsgrove and across St George region
"We're proud to have served the community of Kingsgrove for many decades
Commonwealth Bank Kingsgrove branch manager said
"And are pleased we'll continue to do so at our branch on Kingsgrove Road," she said
The move has been welcomed by Kingsgrove Community Aid Centre chief executive officer
Westpac and St George Bank since 2020," Ms Farah-Hill said
the Commonwealth Kingsgrove branch manager and her team to the Kingsgrove Community Aid Centre's annual general meeting where they wanted to present us with a check for $500
"During their visit they made the announcement that Commonwealth Bank had signed a five year lease on its premises at Kingsgrove Road
It was welcome news that the bank will stay and serve our seniors and also the local business community," she said
so the Commonwealth Bank was the last bastion."
Ms Farah-Hill said many members of the seniors groups at Kingsgrove Community Aid Centre have been impacted by bank closures
The bank closures have been a blow to the many seniors who require physical assistance as they are not too savvy with internet banking
The alternative is the bigger branches in Hurstville and Kogarah which can be difficult for seniors to access
"I'd like to commend the Commonwealth bank for keeping its Kingsgrove branch open," Ms Farah-Hill said
"We are also starting to educate our seniors on how to use the bank ATM
credit cards and internet banking," she said
"There's a sense of relief in the community
A lot of seniors have moved their banking over to the Commonwealth

The Grand Final of the 2023-24 Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup will be played at Coogee Oval NEXT SUNDAY 5 November 2023 between Randwick Petersham and Gordon
The match begins at 2.30pm and will be live streamed
this will be the 5th time Randwick Petersham has participated in the Grand Final
The club won each of the previous 4–three against Sydney University and one against Campbelltown-Camden under lights at Drummoyne Oval
The club has dominated the competition winning 61 out of 85 matches with 21 lost and 3 drawn
A total of 41 of those matches were at Coogee with Randwick Petersham winning 29 while losing 11
Gordon lost 2 of the 4 preliminary rounds but defeated Parramatta and Penrith in the finals series to make the Grand Final
Gordon has been a bit of a thorn in our side in Twenty20 cricket
We have clashed 6 times but have lost the last 4
The latest was in the Semi-Final at Coogee last season when they scored a record 4-221 off their 20 overs and kept us to 7-186 off our 20
They have been a formidable outfit over the seasons and can’t be taken lightly
A very strong 14-man Randwick Petersham squad has been named for Sunday’s clash
Can Randwick Petersham become premiers for the 5th time in this competition
It’s a huge game for the club and the players
A win would give the club its 5th premiership across all competitions in the past 5 seasons (2019-20 Belvidere Cup; 2020-21 Limited Overs Cup; 2021-22 T2O Cup; 2022-23 Poidevin-Gray Shield
Our team goes better when we get a good roll-up to cheer them on
enjoy the spectacle and (hopefully) join in the celebrations
Go the Randy Petes!!
Randwick Petersham Cricket Club came into being on 19 July 2001 when two of Sydney’s oldest and most successful cricket clubs
The club competes in the NSW Premier Cricket Competition in Grades 1-5
U16 Green Shield and the “6th Grade” Metro Cup competitions
Randwick Petersham Cricket Club has a proud history and is well known as having one of the highest volunteer rates in Premier Cricket

Visiting Ickle Coffee’s new flagship store in Kingsgrove is an educational experience
welcoming space they’re always brewing something fantastic
Bags of various single origins are on the shelves
and co-owner Rowena Chansiri is on hand to guide customers through the options
“If people come in asking for coffee beans
whether they like something bright or non-acidic
and together we pick something suitable,” says Chansiri
who roasts Ickle’s coffee in Alexandria for some of Australia’s best cafes
She co-owns Ickle with her sister Kate Chansiri
but it took the pandemic for Chansiri realise Ickle needed a cafe of its own
travel spots and more – curated by those who know
“People have been home for two years drinking coffee locally
and good coffee is concentrated heavily in the inner west
Surry Hills and the city,” she tells Broadsheet
Chansiri didn’t even bother applying to council for permission to serve food
we just want to focus on what we do best.”
Pastries such as Portuguese tarts, orange cake, Boston doughnuts and croissants come from Tuga
and gluten-free fare comes from Little Secrets Bakehouse
Sustainability and good ethics are important to the Chansiris
from the importers they choose to work with
Coffee beans are sold in Ickle bags made from recyclable materials
or you can BYO coffee bag and fill it with whatever is on offer that week: whether it’s an Ethiopian natural-processed (good for milky coffees); a Rwandan wash-processed (Chansiri’s current favourite); or a sweeter
fruity reposado from Costa Rica (good for espresso or filter)
so our customers bring in any bag they can find
fill it with our coffee and we give them a sticker to put on top that explains the contents.”
The cups and glasses for the cafe were donated by Outfield
an Ashfield cafe and Ickle customer that has moved towards picnic-friendly takeaway packaging
After roasting and hand-delivering to inner-city customers for four years
Chansiri is happy to be talking to the public every day
There’s something about being able to talk to people about what you really know
We’re helping people to understand where coffee comes from
how it’s made and how it’s supposed to taste – but ultimately we just want to serve good coffee.”

A Record Breaking 5th title – Sunday 5th November 2023 Coogee Oval
The FW Building Randwick Petersham T20 team won its 5th 1st Grade Twenty20 premiership at Coogee Oval on Sunday (Nov 5) when it defeated a brave Gordon side in the Grand Final of the Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup
And while the match was played in cloudy and gloomy conditions after parts of Sydney had been deluged by up to 75mm of rain overnight
the game produced all the excitement and tension that a T20 Grand Final can do
it was high drama when Daniel Sams clean bowled the Stags skipper
But it was almost 10 overs later before the hosts could claim a second wicket when Jason Ralston bowled Axel Cahlin (38 off 27 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes) for a 2-66 scoreline
Trystan Kennedy (28 off 33) went 7 runs later although a 56 runs partnership which followed
The game swung back to the Randy Petes with the return of Dan Sams to dismiss Mitchell Lole with the 6th ball of his third over
Then he took a wicket with each of the first two of his next
including top-scorer James Newton (39 from 28 with 3 sixes)
That was part of a massive collapse which saw the visitors lose 4-3 and slump from 3-129 to 7-132 in 6 balls
And while a wicket and 14 runs came from the last over
the 20 overs tally of 8-152 finished up quite a competitive score for a Grand Final
Sams finished with 4-30 off 4 overs while Angus McTaggart again did well with 1-22 off 4 as did Connor O’Riordan
1-16 off 2 and Jason Ralston with 1-36 off 4
Jack Wood and Anthony Sams put on 17 in the first 2 overs

Emergency services were called to Kingsgrove train station after receiving reports that a man had been found unresponsive on the tracks late on Sunday evening.
Police accessed the rail line through a security gate and found the man, believed to be aged in his mid-20s, with a mask and spray cans, next to one of the carriages.
Police believe the man had been vandalising another carriage when he ran across the tracks and was hit by a westbound train.
It is not known how the man was able to access the line, which is surrounded by razor-sharp, barbed-wire fencing.
All southbound trains were suspended between Turella and Macarthur while forensic officers combed the site for evidence.
City Rail said all train services, including the T2 line to Sydney Airport, were now operating as normal.
Detective Inspector Paul Simpkins said it was a solemn reminder for people not to enter the railway corridor.
"The circumstances of these events does have some impact on others, the train drivers and emergency services," he said.
"Again we stress to anyone considering entering a railway corridor not to do it. You're gambling with your life."
The man is yet to be formally identified and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
Sydney Trains said it was unable to comment on the man's death as there was now a police investigation underway.

For many people, the promise of a brilliantly sunny day with a light breeze means that they head straight for the beach or the harbour. I wish we could say that we were similarly inclined. Instead the sunny weather urged us to get in our car and make the drive to Kingsgrove, South West of Sydney to try out a place that had been recommended to us by our friend and chef David Tsirekas from Xanthi
All Good Things sits within a mall setting that takes a little wandering around to find
The space is airy and comfortable with quirky design touches like table legs made out of steel plumbing pipes and vintage paraphernalia
There's plenty of rooms for parents with prams and groups with one large share table and room between tables
It's hard to decide and Nick turns up just in time to help us decide
Phillip's brother Simon makes some recommendations and they just happen to be the things that we had our eye on
The juices are impressively large and are chilled but without ice which we like because sometimes juices are mostly just ice
The freshly made juices are thirst quenching and refreshing
Nick orders a pear and ginger juice while Mr NQN goes with the apple and ginger. I try a Snickshake which is a Snickers flavoured milkshake. I would have loved a bit more of the Snickers flavouring with caramel or richness but the nut and chocolate flavours were present
It was a toss up between the Greek baked eggs and Israeli Sabih and we went with the latter. The Israeli Sabih has grilled eggplant, roasted red peppers, house made hummus, zhoug (a spice and herb dip), spinach, soft fried eggs, two pieces of fab char grilled bread and sweet pickles. It's like a delicious vegetarian version of a big breakfast with lots of flavours and dips
The menu explained that all of the beef is grass fed
the pork is Kurobuta and that they also use jersey cow milk for their dairy products
There are slices of char grilled juicy pork belly a scoop of beetroot tzatziki
some slices of sumac dusted tomato and onion salad and two rounds of grilled house made pita bread
We make some wraps with the pork belly and the fresh salads and dips
the beetroot dip sweet with freshness while the myzithra is soft and intensely flavoured
The house made pita rounds are excellent and the pork belly slices appealingly char grilled but still soft and juicy
The stand out dish for all of us was the tongue twisting Kritharaki
It is an orzo pasta with a tomato and Queensland spanner crab sauce
a sprinkling of house smoked kaseri cheese and a quennelle of squid ink skordalia on top
There could have been a bit more crab but for $21 it's a steal
Each forkful is soft and slippery on the tongue and despite us wanting to just try and little bit as we were still full from the previous night's dinner
Simon explains that the pastry chef is from Ananas Brasserie
Greek desserts are such a favourite of mine and this was a particularly intriguing one
There's a layer of feta ice cream which actually tastes like a rich
It never verges into the salty territory which is what the brain usually thinks of when they think feta
There's a refreshing watermelon granita and pieces of delicate mountain tea jelly and kourabretha almond cookie crumbs on top
We managed to get the last piece of the red velvet cake
It's red velvet gone upmarket with a slender slice of moist red velvet cake sandwiched together in the middle with a home made raspberry jam layer which gives the striking red cake the flavour that you'd assume that it comes with but often doesn't
On top is a layer of smooth mirror chocolate icing
The baklava ice cream has a bottom layer of butter kataifi pastry which resembles fine vermicelli
On top of this is a pistachio and white chocolate parfait and rose cream and sprinkled on top is a fine layer of white pistachio snow
What we also love about this dessert is that it's ethereally light with just the right amount of honeyed sweetness that evokes baklava without weighing you down
Which is important because we're going out to dinner in just a few hours-oops
what do you do or where do you go on a sunny day
And have you ever had feta in a sweet item before

for the third annual 'Future Links' career expo
Designed to support students in preparation for not only life after school but how to best assist them in following their skills and passions
the expo aimed to unite school communities
Stall holders were on site to offer advice to students
as a way of building relationships with community businesses and large employment organisations
Some of those included tertiary institutions
NSW Department of Education - Teach NSW and Qantas Apprenticeships
The week-long event was targeted at each school cohort
with young years being supported to identifying their skills
Careers advisor Artermis Theodoris said there were some interesting trends developing from this year's event
"I've seen a huge interest from Year 9 students who are starting to have conversations at home about their futures," she said
"Older students are going through subject selection so it's very relevant to them and those leaving school
"There was strong interest from traditional areas such as nursing
but we've had a huge uptake in cyber security
A lot of students also want to know how to write a resume."
Other schools including Beverly Hills Girls and Kingsgrove North high schools joined the event
This year the expo was made possible through a $10,000 grant received from NSW Ports
"Each year we've been lucky enough to get grants
and as a public school we do need that extra funding," Ms Theodoris said
said the business was delighted to support the careers week and expo
which was one of 17 projects rewarded funds under the 2022 Community Grants Program
"NSW Ports is an active member of the communities within which we operate
Our ports and intermodal terminals play a vital role in supporting trades and industries and providing thousands of jobs
so we're proud to be able to give back through grants and sponsorships," she said
"The expo was an excellent way to support students and highlight the various career pathways they might like to consider
These young people have the world at their feet and are about to enter a rapidly evolving workforce influenced by technology advancements."
A New South Wales Ports Community Grant has been used by Kingsgrove High School to hold the Future Links Careers Week and Expo – a week-long careers expo for high school students in South Sydney
helped the school hold the expo – which aims to prepare students to enter the workforce
Students engaged in various professional workshops ahead of an expo that included 30 exhibitors such as universities
industry bodies and government departments
Students from other South Sydney high schools

which was one of 17 projects awarded funds under the New South Wales Ports 2022 Community Grants Program
“New South Wales Ports is an active member of the communities within which we operate
so we’re proud to be able to give back through grants and sponsorships,” Ms Calfas said
“The expo was an excellent way to support students and highlight the various career pathways they might like to consider
These young people have the world at their feet and are about to enter a rapidly evolving workforce influenced by technology advancements
“That makes the opportunities that were presented at the expo all the more exciting and valuable for students as they continue to consider what type of career
training or tertiary education they may wish to pursue once they’ve graduated.”
said this week’s program was focussed on encouraging students to engage in meaningful discussions with various training
education and employment providers so they’d feel supported as they take their first career steps
“It is never too early to commence conversations with students to have them contextualise their learning
explore careers and pathways available to them and to connect the skills they are building now to outcomes for tomorrow,” Ms Theodoris said
“Thank you to New South Wales Ports for its community grant that’s helped make this week’s seminars and expo a reality
We’re confident this has helped ensure these students have all the support they need to supercharge their learning and future careers.”
