Responding to fan questions during an April 2025 Q&A, Holly spoke candidly about navigating life “solo parenting” while pilot Jimmy is away. “I had a lot of q’s the other day about how I go with a husband who’s away A LOT (many of you in the same boat)… It sounds bad, but I feel like I’ve gotten so used to trying to ‘fill’ the days and make time go quicker whilst Jimmy is away,” she wrote on Instagram. Reflecting on the emotional journey of her experience as a new mother, Holly continued, “Most days and nights have felt lonely and mundane learning to navigate this solo parenting thing… but today for the first time I just paused and focused on living in the moment, because he really is growing and changing SO fast.” “I stopped thinking I needed to be somewhere else, work or tick things off the to-do list… Like any new job or life situation, it’s taken time to find my groove.” After over a month away, Jimmy later took to social media to express his gratitude for his wife, writing on Instagram, “Shoutout to my beautiful wife for being super mum over the last month. I’ve been away more than I ever have. How I love coming home.” Jimmy and Holly’s latest family update comes just over six months after the couple announced they had welcomed their first child in December 2024. Sharing the exciting news to Instagram, Holly wrote, “Introducing our beautiful Lenny boy, who arrived into our lives on Monday evening… 3.35kg, frank breech & butt first via c section (yes he’s already a stubborn little thing like his parents).” Celebrating the arrival of their son, Lennox James Nicholson, Holly added, “At the risk of sounding cliche, it’s certainly true what they say, there is no handbook to prepare you for this kind of love overnight.” “Thank you for choosing us little man, waking up to you the last few mornings has truly felt like a dream. You already have us wrapped around your very long fingers & toes.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by HOLLY NICHOLSON (@hollykingston) News of Lennox’s birth followed shortly after the couple announced that they had moved into their new home, sharing their son’s nursery completion three days before his arrival. The couple shared the news of their move with fans on Instagram. Acknowledging that it was “the end of a chapter,” they explained to fans it was the “start of an even greater one.” “Selling our beloved little apartment and buying a house wasn’t necessarily on our bingo card at 8 months pregnant, but let’s just say there’s no challenging a woman in the nesting phase,” they joked. “So many of you have been with us from the moment we popped the key in the door… following along as we introduced furry family, DIY’d every inch of the place…had countless arguments about beard hair in the sink or beer-induced injuries, watched Raffy turn the bath on every morning & unroll hundreds of toilet rolls and a personal favourite… when we finally discovered we were going to be parents.” “We cannot wait to share this next chapter of our lives with you as a family of 3 (+ 🐱) as we move to our dream first house on the northern beaches where we both grew up. Let the DIY begin.” Over the following weeks, the pair kept fans updated with their “DIY diaries,” sharing behind-the-scenes footage as they settled into their new abode. By December, the couple made the official move into their new place, just in time for the family to expand. “Nesting on steroids // our new happy place,” Holly captioned a set of photos. “We make a good team, but WOWEE what a week it’s been moving into our new home before the new addition… just ask my feet in the last photo.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by HOLLY NICHOLSON (@hollykingston) In September, the couple first announced they were having a baby boy. Sharing the announcement on Instagram, the couple posted a heartwarming video of themselves, friends, and family discovering the sex of their first child, with Holly and Jimmy surprising their loved ones with coloured cupcakes, blue Monopoly cards, and even an ‘It’s a Boy’ teddy bear for their cat. “First Bachi boyyyy!!!! So happy for you both,” wrote former The Bachelor star Laura Byrne. “How good!!! Broken the Bachie spell,” added Tim Robards. View this post on Instagram A post shared by HOLLY NICHOLSON (@hollykingston) The couple first announced the news of their growing family in June 2024 captioning a series of maternity pictures showing Holly’s growing bump and a sonogram picture Fellow Bachelor alumni flooded the announcement with messages of support “Congrats Lovers,” and Laura Byrne writing So unbelievably happy for you both.” guys… enjoy your last few months of freedom before you enter hell as Bachelor host Osher Gunsberg added a tongue-in-cheek “You’re welcome.” Shortly after making their pregnancy announcement Holly revealed the pair’s private struggle with infertility in the hope their story helps others who are going through a similar experience “Our journey to this positive result certainly wasn’t a walk in the park Nothing could’ve prepared us for the lack of control the disappointment and overwhelming isolation that we felt,” she wrote on Instagram “Every time we saw one of these posts no matter how happy we wanted to be for those on the receiving end … it stung.” Telling her followers that she wanted to share the couple’s struggle to help others feel heard she continued: “Whilst we were struggling through this privately we made a promise to ourselves that if / when we do eventually get pregnant we will acknowledge on here that it wasn’t as easy as we had anticipated… in the hopes it might make some feel less alone.” “For those looking at this right now experiencing infertility or loss we see you & from the bottom of our hearts we hope a little miracle comes your way too.” After falling in love on the ninth season of The Bachelor Australia, the pilot and fashion stylist tied the knot at Jimmy’s parents’ home in Sydney’s Palm Beach in August 2023 The wedding came almost exactly a year after the couple announced their engagement, revealing to Stellar magazine at the time that Jimmy had popped the question during a six-week Italian holiday “I went in [to the jeweller] with my sister sunnies and a hat on,” he said of his attempts to go incognito when purchasing the ring “They opened the store up early for us I just didn’t want to risk anyone leaking [the proposal plans] or anything.” Want a love story of your own? navigate and non-compliance with disability access standards Tassielink and Coal River Coaches services will return to the centre of Kingston moving from temporary stops on Goshawk Way Kingborough Council says the relocation will offer “safer and more accessible bus stops for community members health services and key destinations in Kingston” “While some community members will prefer the bus stops to remain on Goshawk Way this would make more difficult for vulnerable community members including elderly people and those living with disabilities,” a spokesperson said accessible bus stops near essential services was a key consideration in the decision to return buses to the Channel Highway.” The interchange consists of two stops – a new Hobart-bound bus stop at 40 Channel Highway and an upgraded southbound stop outside the Commonwealth Bank The council apologised for the lengthy delay in getting the interchange up and running “Council acknowledges the frustration experienced by parts of the community during this process and apologises for any inconvenience caused,” the spokesperson said “A review of the project is currently underway and a summary of the recommendations will be published once completed.” Wisby’s school bus services will continue to use the existing Goshawk Way stops instead of the new interchange The project’s total cost has now climbed to around $1.32 I didn’t understand what she was trying to tell me, and I didn’t believe the words that were coming out of her mouth. ’Your dad’s dead.’ How did she know that before me?” In the panic that ensued, Sara said, she hung up the phone and tried to call her dad multiple times, but each time it went to voicemail. “Finally one of his friends picked up, and all I hear is a heavy, ‘Hi, hon. I’m so sorry,”’ she shared with the court. Sara was the one who then had to call her brothers, still without having any details as to what had happened. What followed were days of heartbreak and confusion, filled with rumours about the murder of her father. But unfortunately, the truth was even worse than she imagined: Millar had been beaten and stomped to death over a game of pool. “It sounds so stupid and petty,” Sara stated flatly. Then she turned to Whitlock, with fire in her eyes, and said, “That’s because it is… Did you think your ego was gonna win against him?” Addressing the court, Sara described her father as “a family man.” The retired correctional officer was a union representative who “took a lot of pride and passion in fighting for workers’ rights.” Married for 43 years, Patrick and his wife, Janet, had “three kids, five grandkids, and six great-grandkids,“ Sara said, emphasizing that his murder ”in such a violent, senseless manner“ was ”something that will burden our family for generations to come.” At the time of his killing, Sara said, the family was still healing from the loss of their mother the year before. In that time, she said, “I got to see my father in a more vulnerable light. I got to know him on a different level than I did before.” She recounted growing up with beautiful memories of a life spent outdoors, camping as a family. Her father was the go-to camp chef and a great cook. “My father loved Christmas, too,” she went on. There were always “wall-to-wall” Christmas presents, she said, and, “Watching the grandkids at Christmas brought my father immense joy; Christmas was about them.” He even volunteered his time with local school children who visited his richly decorated yard. Sara described her father as a generous person with both his money and his time, always lending a hand to those he loved. “Before this tragedy, my father was strength, kindness, and someone you could always go to for a harsh truth and advice — even if you didn’t want to hear it.” “Since both my parents died, I have struggled to find meaning in my daily life,” Sara shared, describing her sleeplessness, anxiety, and never-ending grief, as well as the haunting emptiness of the family home. “The world feels heavier, and I find myself questioning everything I once took for granted,” After reading the coroner’s report, she said, she was horrified. “The size difference between the two, my dad being 4’10“ and 115 pounds… He was the size of a 14-year-old boy,” Sarah said in court. By comparison, Whitlock is about a foot taller and weighs over 200 pounds. “The brutality and the rage was evident in this report. It’s disgusting,” Sara said, turning again to address Whitlock. “Do you feel better about yourself? Do you think that fight was fair? Do you think that’s something to brag about — killing someone so tiny and fragile? It’s pathetic and sad.” As her remarks drew to a close, Sara promised her father’s killer she would be at every parole hearing “to speak for my family. So you’d better get used to my face.” “I’d like to end this with your favourite saying,” she said to Whitlock, referring to part of his confession: “You fucked with the bull; you got the horns. Enjoy your time in PC protective custody, Tony, surrounded by the screws that you love so much. I’m a firm believer in karma, and I heard she’s a real bitch.” Next, Whitlock’s ex-common law partner shared her statement. The woman described her grieving process and sense of guilt over the death of the Millar family’s patriarch. “That should be the focus… The Millars have lost their father, their grandfather, and their friend,” she said. She described the loss of any personal privacy due to his notoriety, the horror of his sending the crime scene photo to her, and how she went through his packed suitcase only to find Millar’s wallet. Addressing Whitlock, she said, “I came to the realization that if my older brother hadn’t called the police… I would have come home to you. You would have insisted that I help you, and when I refused… you would have killed me, too.” “When you sent me a photo of what you had done, I was in disbelief that it was real,” she said. The image was “more gruesome than any trauma I had participated in in my career” as a health care professional. “Knowing that you caused another human being that harm has caused me to have panic attacks and has prevented me from being able to work in health care.” “Even when you had a no-contact order in place, you continued to find ways to intimidate and harass me,” she said. Whitlock has since been charged with breaching the no-contact order. She also described the damage Whitlock’s actions have caused not only to her and the Millars, but to Whitlock’s own family, including his mother, who has since died. Whitlock shook his head at various times throughout her statement, which she concluded by wishing the Millar family peace. Crown attorney Holly Chiavetti, in her final remarks, said, “One of the more disturbing aspects of this case is the senselessness of the murder itself. Mr. Whitlock lost to Mr. Millar in a pool tournament. There’s no conceivable reason why a pool match should have resulted in ending someone’s life, particularly in the brutal and violent way it occurred in this case.” In his final remarks, defence attorney Paolo Giancaterino reminded the court of Whitlock’s long-standing addiction to both drugs and alcohol, coupled with mental health issues, bipolar disorder, and psychotic disorder. “And as a result of an incident where he was significantly injured, he suffers from cognitive impairment,” Giancaterino said, noting he was sharing this, “not to condone, not to make an excuse, but to provide some background and factors about the offender.” While the court adjourned for lunch, the Millar family embraced each other and the woman who had given her statement. After more than two hours of deliberation, Justice Tranmer read his sentencing decision into the record. “Firstly, I want to thank the people who have attended this difficult and heartbreaking day in our court,” he began, noting that, in particular, “I want to thank Sara Millar and Whitlock’s ex-partner for sharing eloquently the tragic and horrendous impact Patrick Millar’s murder has had on his family, his friends, including the school children who so love his Christmas spirit.” “Sara Millar’s statement to the court was a loving, poignant, heartfelt, and articulate tribute to her father,“ the judge said. ”By all accounts, Patrick Millar was a fine person, perhaps small in stature but so clearly large in love, care, kindness, and compassion.” By contrast, Tranmer called the crime “brutal and savage,” a senseless beating by “hand and boot… by a person of significantly greater stature… who showed no mercy. Indeed, he left Millar to die alone in a bathroom, took his wallet, and had a couple of beers… procured some cocaine for himself, and prepared to flee.” “As Ms. Millar described, no one should have to receive a call like she received,” he said plainly. “No criminal prosecution or court sentence can return Patrick Millar to his rightful place and day-to-day life,” Tranmer went on, before sentencing Whitlock to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 16 years. “The basis for the murder, a pool game, defies reason. The crime was brutal… and gruesome. There were no defensive wounds. The Crown described it as ’fortuitous violence’; that means with no reason, and I agree with that. The photo attests to the violence. The size disparity between the two is an aggravating factor. The after-offence conduct that I’ve mentioned is an aggravating factor. The life-altering impact on the family and the community is an aggravating factor. “The lives of many others — grandchildren, great-grandchildren, children, fellow campers, pool friends, and Christmas revellers — will never be the same… Hopefully, a plea of guilty does indicate an acceptance of responsibility and some start towards remorse,” the judge mused. “Perhaps no one needs to be reminded, but I’ll say it anyhow: a human life is precious. It’s a gift. It’s a light in the world. Mr Millar’s light was extinguished for no fault on his part.” The judge then brought his statements to a close. “To the extent that the criminal justice system can address the horror of his death, justice is done by such a sentence,” Tranmer concluded. “It’s not lost on the court that those who live on and cherish the memory of Patrick Millar have also been sentenced to a life sentence — likely even more acutely painful. That void will live on for all time. Hopefully your wonderful, happy memories will bring comfort, perhaps peace, in time.” Michelle Dorey Forestell is the Local Journalism Initiative reporter with the Kingstonist. A nepo baby with an iconic pop star mum and rock star dad has shared a sweet tribute to his girlfriend on social media photographed himself sharing a smooch with his partner on London's Primrose Hill before posting the snap to celebrate her 19th birthday with a heartfelt tribute He wrote: 'What another great year it's been with you love Happiest birthday to the kindest soul i've ever met Kingston, who also has a fledgling music career of his own, is in fact the son of Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, 59, and No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, 55. The former couple share three sons from their 20-year relationship - Kingston, Zuma, 16,  and Apollo, 11.  While the pair amicably separated back in 2016, it is clear that both his parents have had a huge impact on Kingston, who performed his debut solo show two years ago. He was encouraged to do by his mum's new husband, Blake Shelton, 48.  Blake said on social media at the time: 'Okay, y'all, here's the deal. 7:30pm this Friday, I'm gonna set up and play 30 minutes or so acoustically. 'Then I'm gonna turn the stage over to a debut artist that will be doing their very first public performance!' Fans, who noted how similar Kingston looks to his dad, were quick to point out his potential as a musician. One said: 'He's got some definite potential! It shouldn't be too hard for him, as he's got the genes to start.' Blake previously opened up about life as a stepdad and said he wasn't sure if it was even harder than being a biological parent. He said on the radio show The Ride with Kimo & Heather: 'There's definitely nothing easy about it. 'I don't know if it's as hard or harder or not as hard as being an actual biological parent, you know?' Blake then said he had a great inspiration for being a good stepfather.   'I love my stepfather, and I looked up to him. And he's like a father to me.  'So, you know, I have a good inspiration in my life to how to do this and the kind of stepdad I want to be.'  How 'SAS swooped on Iran-backed terror cell': Special Forces troops joined police on UK streets to... {{message}} In what is unfortunately shaping up to be one of the busiest periods of firefighting in Kingston in recent memory a fire that broke out early Friday morning in a multi-unit apartment building on Cedar Street forced eleven residents from their homes and sent one firefighter to the hospital The Kingston Fire Department was dispatched at 12:58am following reports of smoke crews encountered visible smoke and immediately began firefighting and search operations As reports of an active fire were confirmed bringing in more personnel to manage the situation and protect nearby buildings Firefighters used three hose lines to control the blaze — two focused on the primary structure and one to prevent spread to adjacent properties Crews also entered neighboring buildings to alert residents and ensure all occupants were safely evacuated The fire was largely brought under control within 20 minutes though firefighters remained on scene for several hours to perform overhaul operations and investigate the cause A reported eleven residents were displaced and temporary housing was coordinated by the Ulster County Department of Emergency Services and the American Red Cross One firefighter was taken to a hospital for evaluation Additional support was provided by off-duty Kingston firefighters and neighboring departments © 2022 Ulster Publishing © 2022 Ulster Publishing Green thumbs of Kingston rejoice – our autumn plant giveaway is back for 2025 These free events allow residents to collect up to five free tube stock native plants per household Mayor Georgina Oxley said we are committed to expanding our biodiversity and increasing our canopy cover and vegetation across the city we have seen a decline in our tree canopy cover over the past decade and we are very keen to turn that around," Cr Oxley said "The giveaways are one measure we are taking to achieve this along with undertaking a major planting program supporting community-led initiatives and school-based programs and developing a community education program "Our community understands the importance of our urban forest but there is work to be done to shift the way we think about "A great place to start is picking up some trees grasses or groundcovers and adding to your garden." matters faced by the ADCO Group in relation to a previous project when it appointed the Melbourne-based builder to construct its new aquatic centre in Mordialloc As reported in the Chelsea Mordialloc Mentone News ADCO Group Pty Ltd and its nominee director John Conroy were charged by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) in February of this year in relation to the collapse of the roof of the Kew Recreation Centre during construction in late 2022 The builder is facing a total of 18 charges Set to be the most expensive project in Kingston Council’s history the Mordi Aquatic Centre will cost $87.5 million to construct with the Federal Government spending $20 million and the rest of the cost to be covered by the Council and its ratepayers Council paid $14.6 million for the land opposite Jack Grut Reserve In July last year the Council appointed ADCO to build the facility iIn response to a question at a public meeting last month City of Kingston General Manager of Infrastructure and Open Space Samantha Krull stated “at the time of tendering the Mordi Aquatic Centre project we were aware that there had been a roof collapse at the Kew Recreation Centre and that ADCO was the head contractor on the project.” Peter Bean noted “ADCO are well-known in the industry and have recently successfully delivered the Carnegie Memorial Swimming Pool and are currently working on Hawthorn Football Club’s Kennedy Community Centre When ADCO was appointed in July 2024 the industry was aware of the incident at the Kew Recreation Centre with charges later made by the VBA in February 2025 “Before appointing contractors on any of our major projects we put in place strict oversight and planning measures including independent probity experts and independent technical experts to oversee all aspects of design and construction Construction of the new Mordi Aquatic Centre is progressing well and we are looking forward to delivering a fantastic multi-generational asset for our community.” Kingston Council’s response to a resident question last month read “through the tender process the tender evaluation panel requested clarification from ADCO on measures that had been put in place subsequently which showed they had done a thorough review and updated their QA systems Council’s due diligence undertaken through the tender evaluation process was overseen by an independent probity advisor Council’s lawyers provided advice and drafted the contract with ADCO.” A media release from the VBA read that the filing of charges “follows a two-year VBA investigation into the collapse of a large section of a structural steel framework during the redevelopment of the Kew Recreation Centre “The VBA alleges ADCO Group knowingly carried out building work outside of what was allowed under their building permit This includes that the company fabricated and erected a steel roof truss containing four spliced sections instead of a single length of steel as required under the permit The VBA also alleges that the welding of the structural steel framework was non-compliant and the steel used in the truss did not meet Australian standards “If found guilty ADCO Group’s nominee director John Conroy could face imprisonment and a fine of up to $108,000 on each charge The company also faces fines of up to $540,000 for each offence.” ADCO managing director Neil Harding said “as this matter is now before the courts we are bound by confidentiality and cannot provide any further comment we can advise that this matter involves complex issues and investigations with evidence yet to be assessed.” ADCO has previously stated that it is strongly defending the charges The case will return to the Magistrates Court on 19th May Greater Dandenong Council approved ADCO as the builder for its new $108 million aquatic and wellness centre The Council had been earlier delayed its decision to award the contract when Councillors expressed concern about the VBA charges Image: Concept driving an hour or so along gravel roads to a lonely spot in the bush The rain is cold as we come across a giant tree harvester in the Bulga State Forest 100 kilometres west of Port Macquarie on the mid-north coast of New South Wales A bike lock is placed around my neck and attached to the machine I’d been told that everyone is anxious before lock-on but then they feel clarity and empowerment I’m shaking with cold and fear and trying to work out why I am doing this I have a buddy – Jane Watson – who is not locked on but sits nearby Before light she names the birdsongs I hear – shining cuckoo We are without phones because police might confiscate them I’m surprised to experience intense stillness in the total loss of control a man and a woman in fluoro vests stamped “Forestry Corporation” approach and ask us to leave the woman tells us two loggers would “snig” around us in machines but they soon leave and Jane says we called their bluff The woman returns with her “authorised officer” credentials and orders us to leave or police will be called Jane says she’ll stay with me but will leave if police ask her to She has campaigned to protect this forest for decades but has never been arrested two police officers and two big police rescue squad men in white overalls arrive The police arrest Jane and take her up the hill A rescue squad man says he’s a hydraulic engineer and the machinery above me could fall and crush me in response to the angle grinder cutting my lock off The other says I must take off my raincoat or sparks from the angle grinder will set me alight They say there’s a significant risk I could be killed or calamitously maimed if I don’t tell them where the keys are They say that when I bend my head forward it must stay completely still or I could be cut “Let’s do it.” He says they will do their utmost to ensure my safety and I reply that it hadn’t occurred to me they wouldn’t I wonder why I’m prepared to die for this cause All I can think of before the angle grinder efficiently removes the bike lock is that if I die We’re put in the dog box on the back of the police wagon nothing to hang on to for the hour-long drive on winding potholed gravel back roads to avoid going through Elands the holding cells are little white booths in a row a leader in the decades-long struggle by Elands locals to protect the Bulga State Forest Susie had locked down solo the day before because after so many days delaying the months-long logging plan All my belongings are taken and I’m fingerprinted and photographed The custody manager lets me have my book for a pillow to lie on the narrow bench She gives me two cups of strong tea as the hours roll by waiting for “upstairs” to decide whether or not to give us bail She has to get permission from “upstairs” to give me a Nicabate She says she’s not recording and I believe her She’s looked me up and thinks I should stick to words At that time I was embedded as the only reporter in the Maules Creek mine protest camp The charges were dropped because police had breached trespass law requirements I tell Belinda I’ve only been voluntarily arrested once before She’s too young to remember Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen so I explain he was our Trump and while my peers at Sydney University marched for women’s and gay rights at Queensland University She listens to this story and says: “So why did you do this?” via Twitter and my citizen journalism website No Fibs A protest camp at Elands’ Ellenborough Falls campsite grew so big that Forestry Corp postponed Bulga Forest logging and began stripping the nearby Lorne and Yarratt state forests I’d naively thought “sustainable logging” meant selective felling of trees A police inspector ordered us to leave the site stating that Forestry Corp had just officially closed the entire forest to traffic and walkers and we’d be arrested even for driving through Forestry Corp published an official closed forest map on its website local council and NSW National Parks were not advised it was closed only to people police thought might be protesters I told Belinda I’d angsted for a week before I decided to report on the protest the rule of law had collapsed in NSW public forests but I’d made a decision to commit to further protests I reluctantly decided to lock-on last week when there was no one else to Each day’s lock-on delays destruction of a haven for the officially endangered greater gliders Forestry Corp’s “compliance officers” had surveyed for them by day but the marsupials only begin emerging from their tree dens at dusk including former Treasury secretary Ken Henry who now runs an “accounting for nature” project documenting many glider dens that mean Forestry Corp is required by law to add them to logging exemption zones It seems senseless to me for the NSW government despite the risks to water catchments and habitat for endangered species especially after their devastation in the 2019 bushfires these precious trees become native woodchips for suburban gardens pallets and a few high-end hardwood boards The Nationals back the timber mills and contractors and the CFMEU won’t let Labor stop it It seems so easy to fix – make state forests carbon offset areas earning money for the state; buy out the logging contracts and offer employees and local contractors generous severance packages and retraining As I was being arrested alongside other protesters Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek was at the first Global Nature Positive Summit and effectively admitted she was powerless to act it’s a war between citizens and Forestry Corp who are constantly diverted from regular duties Victoria and Western Australia have stopped native forest logging on public land but the NSW Labor government delays by appointing a forestry panel to assess the industry’s future activists told me police rescue routinely does a version of what it did to me – an apparent attempt to scare protesters They told me they’d never heard of anyone being hurt I didn’t know the rituals of the ground war I hadn’t been pre-briefed on that because Susie Susie Russell has fought for decades to protect NSW native forests she saved me when I broke down physically and mentally after The Sydney Morning Herald rejected my work in 2005 Susie also showed me how to see and appreciate nature and I think of her house on the Bulga plateau as my second home My father told me that if you have one true friend I’m proud that I’ve proved to myself that I’m a true friend of a true friend I’m relieved this 65-year-old childless dog lady didn’t break when she did something outside her comfort zone for younger generations Maybe clarity and empowerment take a while Share this subscriber exclusive article with a friend Rakkas has been bringing elevated Turkish food to Canberrans since the middle of last year We've opted for the seven-course set menu ($80) this evening - there's also a nine-course option for $110 - and immediately look at the wine list for what Turkish wines on offer There's a decent sprinkling of Turkish drops throughout the menu and our server is very helpful when it comes to recommendations We landed on the Kav Narince from Tokat Northern Turkey ($18 a glass) which was quite citrusy And then comes our introduction to Rakkas's food - the best-looking trio of dips I have ever seen There's a mild chilli macaroon filled with a dried Turkish pepper labne roasted chickpeas and drizzled with black tahini and a brilliantly bright pink roast beetroot "cannoli" made out of ice molt and filled with beetroot dip Kalamar - chargrilled calamari with walnut tarator and isot butter radish watercress salad. This is not the type of dip that you get from the fridge section at Coles This looks like dessert on the plate and for two of the three dips The hummus was a little bland - you don't really get that chickpea flavour coming forward except when you get one of the crispy chickpeas on top but the bread-to-dip ratio was a little off - there was plenty of dip left over Out next we have the hellim - fried halloumi with honeycomb thyme and rose leaves - and the mercimek kofte - red lentil Picture by Gary RamageThe halloumi is another beautifully presented dish and it's really hard to go wrong with some fried cheese drizzled with honey The mercimek kofte was somewhat surprising It looks similar to how you expect a tartare to come out these chilli are pickled in apple cider vinegar so they're super mild and just add a little zing is the sweetness that comes from pomegranate molasses pickled chilli and baby cos.Next out is the kalamar - chargrilled calamari with walnut tarator and isot butter radish watercress salad you think you're being delivered a green salad of some sort But underneath the mound of green salad - with a little bit of red onion and radish - is an equally large mound of diced squid It's lovely and tender but it could have been a little more charred There was a small amount of walnut tarator under everything but it felt almost like a garnish - there really wasn't enough to go around Last out for the savouries was the cokertme kebab - handmade wagyu kofta with smoked yoghurt iskender sauce potato floss and basil foam - and the piyaz - black-eyed beans Cokertme kebab - handmade wagyu kofta with smoked yoghurt iskender sauce potato floss and basil foam. The piyaz was a nice side dish - the beans were mixed with diced capsicum and cucumber that formed almost like a salsa-type salad with the asparagus laid on top with little half quail eggs that were the perfect level of goey It didn't really punch you in the face with flavour but I don't think it was ever designed to be the star of the show The wagyu koftas were a little disappointing It was almost sausage roll-esque - with the wagyu wrapped in what looked like flatbread The smoked yoghurt - which we were told had been infused with Turkish tea - and the tomato sauce were packed with flavour Kazandibi - caramelised milk pudding with sour cherry compote and kataifi crisps. We rounded out the night with kazandibi - a caramelised milk pudding with a sour cherry compote and kataifi crisps The pudding itself almost looked like a rolled-up omelette with a light custard flavour in the centre and a smokiness on the caramelised exterior I think the word caramelised may throw a few people here - it's a very earthy flavour and not the sugary caramel that many of us have come to know It worked well with the sour cherry compote which really cut through and elevated the dish The kataifi crisps were a nice idea but were really a little pointless in the overall dish They're too tough to break with your spoon and eat alongside the pudding and the pudding hasn't got the right texture to use the crisps in a cracker and dip scenario It's quite clear that they're passionate about what they're plating up - everything has been beautiful this evening And while the flavour hasn't been as memorable I have no doubt that it will get to a place where it's as good as it looks Website: rakkas.com.au As the lifestyle reporter, I love finding out what makes people tick and giving insight into the different ways that you can enjoy the city we live in. pledging $910,000 to upgrade the Kingston Beach Surf Life Saving Club if re-elected giving the club a permanent meeting space after more than a decade of waiting one of southern Tasmania’s biggest surf lifesaving organisations to build a meeting room above its existing equipment shed and add a kiosk to help generate revenue which will mean more activity here on the beach and that swimmers and users of the beach will be safer,” said Labor’s federal member for Franklin The club has outgrown its current facilities Club President Danielle Campbell said the announcement was a welcome relief “Right now down here we have a shed which we’ve got all our boards in and all our nippers stuff in but we don’t actually have anywhere to meet,” Campbell said “What we’re hoping to do is build up and have a meeting room where we can do a whole bunch of stuff and also be able to use [in] the off-season.” including 160 kids under 13 in the Nippers program and about 100 patrolling members who help keep the beach safe It’s been really hard to keep up with the momentum which is a great problem,” Campbell added Club member Matilda Dalco said members had been waiting for proper facilities for over 15 years “It’s just going to allow us as a club especially over the winter months when it gets colder to meet as a club and do some extra training and invite the community in,” Dowko said The upgrades and destroy cancer cells sounds like science fiction It’s called Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy and it’s now available at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) hematologist at KHSC and senior investigator with the Canadian Cancer Trials Group It’s the next new advancement in cancer care.”  KHSC is now just the fourth site in Ontario to offer this groundbreaking therapy It means patients in southeastern Ontario can now receive this advanced treatment closer to home CAR T-cell therapy takes a different approach than chemotherapy or radiation Instead of destroying cancer cells directly it strengthens the body’s immune system to do the work T-cells are white blood cells which help detect and fight infections But cancer cells can learn to hide from them The therapy works by collecting a patient’s T-cells and re-engineering them to help them find and attack the cancer This highly targeted treatment means that the T-cells are attracted to cancer cells like a magnet to iron It can be effective even when other treatments haven’t worked “For patients with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma CAR T-cell therapy can lead to longer remission—or even get rid of the cancer entirely.”  what started as back pain in early 2018 turned into something far more serious a series of scans confirmed the diagnosis: lymphoma Initial treatment included six rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant at KHSC which put her cancer into remission for six months Hay determined that Cathy would be a good candidate for CAR T-cell therapy— which was only just arriving in Canada at the time Cathy was originally confirmed for a clinical trial in Toronto It was a case of leaving home and family and moving away from our entire support network but it was a low point having to leave home and it seemed like it was a million miles away joined her in Cleveland to support her as a caregiver They first went down for several days while her T-cells were collected They then came home for six weeks while the cells were sent to California to be processed and returned to Cleveland for the procedure four were in a nearby hotel so she could continue to be monitored Cathy and Dave are confident that having CAR T-cell therapy in Kingston is going to make a big difference for patients “We wanted to go to Cleveland – and we could - but a lot of people aren’t able There’re a million reasons someone might not make it.”  Cathy is cancer-free and when she and Dave reflect on their journey “We always felt relief when we got back to Kingston and got care here,” she says “The team here in Kingston - I think it’s one of the best in Canada “And from what I see as a volunteer with Cancer Care Ontario the doctors and care teams – it's world class.”    Sometimes I don’t think people realize what a big deal this is It's really state-of-the-art stuff - and it’s right here in Kingston I don’t think we brag enough about what’s done here in terms of research and what the staff are doing The program at KHSC took more than five years to build Teams from nearly every corner of the hospital were involved—from the ICU all of which are involved in delivering the treatment to the IT and legal teams to who worked to build the infrastructure and contracts to make the program possible The launch of CAR T- cell therapy is the beginning of a journey The success of this type of treatment will mean new applications and increased demand and the team at KHSC plans to become a leader in this type of care but once the current standard-of-care program is fully established the team plans to begin clinical trials with the goal of eventually engineering therapies in Kingston “This is going to need continued support to make sure this ramps up,” said Dr “But it’s an outstanding example of what we can achieve when we work together It’s about giving patients the best possible care—and hope.”  KHSC is located on the ancestral lands and waters of the Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee.    Learn More Welcome to Kingston Health Sciences Centre If you are looking for information about Hotel Dieu Hospital or Kingston General Hospital The magnificent-looking Kingston Rule had limited success at stud Photo: Patricia McQueenFROM THE ARCHIVE: Patricia McQueen’s long-running series following Secretariat’s progeny is one of the most popular items at Thoroughbred Racing Commentary Here’s where she started out nine years ago There’s an old saying in the Thoroughbred industry – breed the best to the best that theory produced magic in the name of Kingston Rule the handsome son of Secretariat found the extra firm ground to his liking and won Australia’s famed Melbourne Cup setting a course record that still stands today “Secretariat was the best horse as a racehorse in history and I believed that a combination with Rose Of Kingston might work,” Hains recalled recently of the royal mating he planned some 30 years ago Rose Of Kingston was named Australian Horse of the Year at three; her victories for Hains included the 1982 AJC Derby against the boys by the undefeated Italian stakes winner Claude was one of several mares Hains sent to his Kentucky farm in the mid-1980s but it was her 1986 son by Secretariat who would make all the headlines earned the nickname Magic after he was born in Kentucky on March 18 he was sent to trainer Patrick Biancone in France who had several other horses for Hains at the time Although some sources say Kingston Rule had one poor start in France there is no record of him running in an official race there so he was sent to trainer Tommy Smith in Australia Kingston Rule made his first start at Warwick on May 9 He finished 13th and last in a maiden race at 1,400 meters Hains wasn’t prepared to take that step given the bloodlines so Kingston Rule was sent back to Kingston Park in Victoria to regroup he was transferred to Bart Cummings’ barn in Melbourne ranting bull” who was frightened of other horses and who would break out in sweats according to Cummings and his then-foreman as recounted by Les Carlyon in his biography of the trainer Patience and time were the prescriptions to calm the beast they took him to some of the country race meetings several times – not to race just to get more experience being around other horses Kingston Rule made his first start for Cummings in the Chatham H but appeared to be making a winning run when another jockey’s whip struck him on the head He broke through with victories in his next two starts Carlyon described the February appearance as that of a horse on the edge of a nervous breakdown – “He was so highly strung he was close to being unstrung .. It was as though he was waiting for a tiger to jump out and land on his back.” Clearly Cummings and Corstens needed to keep working on Kingston Rule he was put away until the following spring by which time Kingston Rule was starting to “conquer his demons,” noted Carlyon he sent a message with a strong fourth-place effort in the 1,600 meter G2 Craiglee S “That was the day we knew for sure he had a big race in him,” Corstens said at the time “It was a colossal performance.” But he hadn’t yet done enough to be assured a place in the Melbourne Cup and Cummings continued to tweak the horse’s training regimen He added rubber shock absorbers under his shoes because he hit the ground hard with his forelegs To encourage him to stretch out and keep his head down “He was rather big and overweight in my opinion,” the trainer recalled in 2012 the colt won the 2,600 meter G2 Moonee Valley Cup on October 27 which guaranteed a spot in the Melbourne Cup and decided he’d have to run again before the Melbourne Cup.” he ran in the G2 Dalgety at Flemington on November 3 historically a popular spot for Melbourne Cup-bound horses again uncorking a scintillating rally under new jockey Darren Beadman coming from last to just miss by a half-length over 2,500 meters “He needed that race because he was a very heavy horse and it was the only way to clean his wind up,” recalled Cummings They need it.” And there’s no doubt that Kingston Rule was thriving on the schedule When he appeared at Flemington before the Melbourne Cup three days later on November 6 he was relaxed – with none of the nervousness so evident earlier that year Cummings and Corstens had worked their magic The horse looked so good that his odds quickly went down from 12 to 1 to 7 to 1 making him co-favorite with New Zealand’s The Phantom running just behind the first few in the field of 24 never too far back and saving ground almost every step of the way Beadman eased him out turning for home and hit the front with a furlong to go Beadman resisted any temptation to use the whip He urged the horse on with only his hands and legs and won by a length “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I hit the front a furlong out,” said Beadman after the race “I saw The Phantom come at me on the inside and I hoped it wasn’t him Kingston Rule completed the 3,200 meter race in a record 3:16.3 I’d call him ‘sir.’ On a dry track so that disastrous first start over heavy going was easily explained Secretariat’s influence in the 1990 Melbourne Cup was not limited to the winner Finishing third was the unimposing 6-year-old gelding Mr a member of Secretariat’s second crop and the first of Secretariat’s sons to end up at stud in Australia Kingston Rule had earned a short vacation at the farm and returned to Cummings’ stable in December with an ambitious goal – the 1991 Japan Cup “I know what is required of the horse the trainer and the jockey to win the Japan Cup and in Kingston Rule I feel I have the right material to take on the best in the world,” Cummings announced at the time he bowed a tendon and his racing career was over He had four wins in 18 starts and earnings of A$1,549,125 plus the celebrity that came from winning one of the world’s most important races as a son of one of the world’s best racehorses So it was on to a second career as a stallion with high hopes despite the fact that stayers weren’t usually popular and rarely received the best mares under the watchful eyes of Tim and Lisa Johnson Tim Johnson recalled that it took Kingston Rule a couple of seasons to fully mature and lose that racehorse look “Then he developed into this magnificent horse – really there was no better-looking stallion anywhere.” the horse loved to spend his days sunbathing “He was too smart to waste his energy,” Johnson said adding that Kingston Rule exercised just enough to look after himself His 1994 crop produced his two best offspring the very good G1-winning fillies Kensington Palace and Sheer Kingston His popularity waned as quality runners were few and far between and he bred just a handful of mares annually in his later years “To have such a good-looking horse with such a good pedigree it was a crying shame that he wasn’t more successful as a stallion,” said Johnson who considered Kingston Rule part of the family at Ealing Park until the horse died from the infirmities of old age on December 3 Secretariat’s Legacy by Patricia McQueen can be ordered here for $54.95 at secretariatslegacy.com • Children of Secretariat: click here for links to all the articles in Patricia The XS1000 is also backwards compatible with the USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface which means it can be used with older laptops Because it defaults to the maximum speed of the system the transfer speed will be reduced to 500MB/second or less even an interface that doesn’t quite reach 10Gbps should be fast enough for the average photographer although it probably won’t suit those who want to transfer video files that are larger than about 100GB The cost per gigabyte of storage is just over one cent which makes these drives good value for money The USB 3.2 specification was only released in September 2017 so devices made before then will generally run slower We measured the times it took to transfer two folders of image and video data from our Windows computer with an Intel i7-7700 CPU and 64-bit operating system  to the XS1000 using the bundled USB Type-C to Type-A cable  Screen grabs showing stages of each transfer are provided below Three stages in the transfer of 84.5GB of data comprising a mixture of JPEG and ORF.RAW image files and 4K  MPEG-4 H.264 video files taken with an Olympus OM-D E-M1 II mirrorless camera to the XS1000 We didn’t bother testing the drive with larger data loads since few of our readers – who we see as typical potential buyers of the XS1000 – would place higher demands on the drive’s file handling capabilities Unless they’re using cameras with resolutions of 60 megapixels or more and recording a lot of high-resolution high bit depth videos most people would struggle to generate more than 10GB in a single shoot but they are our only way to maintain the server Please deactive Ads blocker to read the content Your co-operation is highly appreciated and we hope our service can be worth it.
