A woman has been airlifted to hospital suffering severe burns after a fire broke out at a home in Sydney
A house fire in Sydney's west on Friday afternoon has left a woman with severe burns
was rushed to hospital after the blaze broke out at a home in Kingswood Park
Emergency services descended on the Lethbridge Street property just after 2pm after multiple calls were made to triple-0 about a fire
"More than 30 firefighters and eight fire trucks responded to the incident and upon arrival
crews found the two-storey home well alight," Fire and Rescue NSW said
"Firefighters quickly got to work and contained and extinguished the fire on the ground floor in approximately 15 minutes
She was initially treated on scene by firefighters until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived."
The Mounties Care CareFlight Helicopter was dispatched to the scene
before the woman was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in St Leonards
The woman is said to be in a serious but stable condition
Firefighters spent the afternoon "mopping up
extinguishing hot spots and ventilating the home"
An investigation will be carried out into the cause of the fire
Work is starting on the first stage of South Gloucestershire Council’s landscaping programme for Kingswood Park
which will involve major accessibility and biodiversity improvements
This forms part of The National Lottery Heritage Fund award
granted to improve accessibility and enhance the site for local wildlife in the park
The work includes laying a new stone path as well as major tree landscaping work
with the public invited to help create a new green wildlife corridor
Over the winter work will begin onsite to create the missing section of a circular route around the park
The new 150 metre section will be laid between Orchard Road and Edward Road using local limestone
The stone has been selected as a more environmentally friendly option compared to standard asphalt as it allows air to reach the roots of trees
As the area near the path includes mature lime trees
the council will be using no dig construction techniques to protect the sensitive environment and root systems of the trees
The tree landscaping work will involve the removal of 70 metres of Leylandii trees and replacing them with native hedgerow which will provide a much better source of food and shelter for wildlife
The Leylandii trees were planted originally as a screen but provide little benefit to wildlife compared to a native hedgerow
with the timber used to make path edges for the nature reserve area
The bark chippings will be used to create this new path and used to mulch the newly planted hedgerow
The timber will also be used to make a dead hedge along the park boundary providing a new habitat that will benefit insects and birds
Once established the new hedgerow will have greater amenity value
Local people are invited to help create this exciting wildlife habitat with a ‘hedgerow heroes’ planting day on Saturday 7 December
10.30am to 2.30pm as part of National Tree Week 2024
The next phase of the council’s wider work programme will begin in spring next year and will include revamping the amphitheater with new seating and performance area
as well as the building of a new accessible toilet block
creating more accessible paths and extending the play area
wellbeing and other community activities in the park will continue to run alongside these physical improvements
This three-year project is an important piece of South Gloucestershire Council’s wider programme of investment in Kingswood. More info is available on the council’s website here https://kingswoodparkimprovements.commonplace.is/
New South Wales Local Government Elections are being held this weekend and here is everything you need to know before heading into the polling booths
Australian residents aged 18 and over are required to hit the booths and cast their vote for the new crop of Penrith City Councillors
local Councils are the third tier in Australian government after State and Federal and are charged with making decisions that represent the values and needs of the local community they serve
They have jurisdiction over day-to-day level operations like developments
Penrith residents will be electing 15 different Councillors

this includes those living in parts of Kingswood
The election in the East Ward has been declared by the NSW Electoral Commission as uncontested
meaning that no vote will take place for those living in the East Ward
Labor is the only ticket running in the East Ward
meaning that all five candidates will be elected to Council
No polling places will be set up on Saturday

Vote counting begins soon after the polls close at 6pm on Saturday
During this initial count some Councils will get an indication of the result but for situations where the results will be a bit closer more counting is continued in the following days

When the moon rises above Kingswood’s notorious shopping strip on the Great Western Highway
no one wants to be outside – fearing the repercussions of an interaction with someone looking for trouble
The death of pizza shop owner Sonmez Alagoz – known to the local business community as John – has prompted questions about the strip of shops that many locals avoid
Alagoz was fatally stabbed just after 10pm on Tuesday
A teenager has been charged with his murder
who chose to hide her identity to protect her workplace
“Sometimes people come to the front of the store at night and shout
They steal cans from the fridge and run away,” she explained
Another anonymous business owner said the tragic death of The Pizza Stop owner has impacted her business
and people are too scared to come,” she said while working behind the counter
I’m a new business owner and this is something I haven’t seen in other areas.”
but workers attribute that to their daytime opening hours
“During the day it’s OK,” Shai from AllFish2U stated
“But it’s definitely a scary situation being only five doors down
Joh from Kingswood Florist shared Shai’s sentiment
explaining the store no longer extends its hours for special occasions
“We used to do that on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day many years ago until one day there was a group of drunk people that came from the hotel
after that I said we’re not doing night-time hours anymore,” Joh explained
Following an enquiry about the cracks in her storefront window
the florist told the Weekender there should be a bigger police presence
a CB radio store neighbouring The Pizza Stop
explained there’s always been stigma attached to Kingswood
“We’ve always had a degree of trouble because we’re in a low socio-economic area and we have a pharmacy that dispenses methadone and we have a drug and alcohol clinic at the end of the street,” Ben said
“A lot of the issues aren’t caused by people who live here
Ben’s been at the Kingswood business for 28 years and believes it’s time young offenders get more than a slap on the wrist
and none of them would’ve done that,” he declared
The suburb’s questionable reputation hasn’t impacted everyone; Dee from Country Brewer explained there’s trouble everywhere
“I knew the family and I’m shaken by the tragedy,” Dee began
Kingswood’s housing market is also unaffected
according to Glenmore Park Realty Sales Consultant Ralph Saporito
“We haven’t had a problem selling what we have there,” Saporito explained
“We had a property in Kingswood on the weekend and it sold at the first open home.”
A NSW Police spokesperson said Nepean Police Area Command reviews instances of crime on an ongoing basis and in line with community needs
“Police are tasked to complete high visibility patrols in addition to responding to calls for service in identified areas based on this ongoing review,” the spokesperson stated
members of the Command work closely with the local community to prevent crime and address community safety through joint initiatives and collaboration.”
But after years of locals avoiding their own shops
perhaps it’s time for a re-think on what the future holds for this row of shops
and focuses on entertainment and community stories

the 25th anniversary of Walk Safely to School Day is taking place in schools across the country
more active lifestyles by just adding a walk into their daily routine
and we try to do Ride Safely to School as well
That idea of walking safely and riding safely is really important in our context,” she said
“The kids all live really close to our school
It’s not like in some other settings where they’re a really long way away from the school
most of ours are within four or five blocks
so pretty much everyone can walk or ride to get here.”
Championed by the Pedestrian Council Australia
the messaging around Walk Safely to School Day is focused on raising awareness of the health
transport and environmental benefits that regular walking
or alternative active transport like riding a bike
can provide for the long-term wellbeing of children
particularly given the childhood obesity epidemic that continues to affect one in four children
but then also having that exercise model as part of that as well
is obviously really important for being healthy and starting school right
it’s really important that we have that great start to our day
there will be plenty of fun campaigns and activities to encourage little ones to get involved in the initiative
“We’ll be encouraging them on the day to do it extra safely!” she said
“We’ll have some staff out the front with little stickers and things from ‘Walk Safely to School’ just to give them that extra little bit of excitement
it’s part of our normal road safety program that we teach in class every year anyway – it’s just a great opportunity to reiterate that message.”
It’s for this reason that she’s encouraging everyone to get involved – not just today
we’re always talking about walking safely to school,” she said
“We’re always talking about crossing safely – you can’t get into our school without crossing a road
so no matter where they’re doing that around the school
it’s always really important to have that messaging coming through.”

It’s the latest in a series of western Sydney suburbs that I have inhabited after growing up in the area
I did spend some time away living in other areas but you always feel the most connection with where you grew up
My family is here and now my two kids are being raised in the area
I know it sounds corny but it makes me happy to think that they will visit and play in some of the same places I did as a kid
They have played in some of the same parks and swum in the same pools
A lot of things are said about western Sydney
Many of those things are said by people whose idea of western Sydney is anywhere farther away than King Street
Does it have some of the fancy (and expensive) menu items that fancy cafes closer to the city have
Does it have tasty food and friendly service
is it on the ground floor of my apartment building
meaning I can take the lift down to breakfast
I’m usually drawn to Thai Tae restaurant in Penrith’s Westfield

Generations of kids in the area have wiled away the ridiculously hot summer daylight hours at Ripples
ignoring the orders of the lifeguards not to run on the pool deck
(Sorry to the lifeguards I ignored.) However
but you have to take visitors to the stunning combination of Leura and Katoomba in the Blue Mountains

South Gloucestershire Council is developing plans to improve Kingwood Park and local people are being asked to provide their input to help shape the proposals
After securing £120,000 development funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF)
the council is working with the Friends of Kingswood Park and the local community on plans to restore and enhance the park
The project aims to renovate the park so that it forms the green ‘heart’ of Kingswood where people go to enjoy high quality facilities
there will be landscape and biodiversity enhancements
and the play area and the park’s learning experience are also earmarked for improvements
The council hopes to apply for up to £2.5 million of funding in total to restore and improve the park in 2023
The restoration of Kingswood Park forms part of the council’s ambitious £25 million regeneration vision for the Town Centre
which also includes the purchase of Kings Chase Shopping Centre and the restoration of the Whitfield Tabernacle as part of the wider Kingswood Masterplan
The recently created Town Council will be an integral link to the success of this wider vision
cabinet member with responsibility for communities at South Gloucestershire Council
said: “We are working with the Kingswood community to make Kingswood Park a place that everyone in the area can be proud of
“We recently approved a masterplan for Kingswood
backed by a £25 million investment package secured by the council with support from the local MP
and part of this shared future vision aims to improve local parks and green spaces and their connections
“These proposals have been developed by the council and Friends of Kingswood Park in consultation with park users
We want more people from the area to help shape our plans to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the local community
so please let us know your views by taking part in our questionnaire which should only take a few minutes to complete.”
secretary of the Friends of Kingswood Park
said: “This survey features a lot of great new additions to the park that have been the subject of discussions we’ve had with South Gloucestershire Council over the last few years
We are delighted with how it’s all progressing
The refreshment facility is one particular feature which we are really hopeful to see happen.”
The main aims of the Kingswood Park project are to:
making it a central focus for the community and contribute to the economic regeneration of Kingswood High Street
– improve access for people with mobility difficulties
– improve the park landscape and biodiversity
– encourage greater use of the park through events and activities
– encourage voluntary groups and schools to make more use of the park
– share the heritage of the park and research its history
– explore the option to refurbish or provide new toilet facilities
– investigate opportunities for a refreshment facility
By completing the questionnaire you could also win one of five £25 shopping vouchers (details at the end of the survey)
Closing date for submission of the questionnaire is 31 August 2022
A hotel boasting a rooftop bar and dining has been approved for Kingswood
140-bed ‘medi-hotel’ will be built on the northeast corner of Somerset and Hargrave streets
diagonally opposite Nepean Public Hospital’s multi-storey car park
Submitted by investment group Boston Global late last year
the $30 million development will cater to pre and post-operative patients as well as regular guests
“The applicant describes the use as a ‘medi-hotel’ because of its proximity to Nepean Hospital and other medical facilities in the immediate area,” the Major Assessment Report states
“The hotel will be marketed to pre and post-operative patients and their families
“No medical advice or services will occur at the hotel.”
The rooftop level will contain the hotel gym
outdoor exercise terrace and food and beverage space with both internal and external seating areas
In addition to the reception and lobby areas
the ground floor will also feature a hotel lounge
And it won’t just be guests who will be able to enjoy the views
lounges and dining areas available to the public
adding another option to Penrith’s busy food and drink scene
Rubber-stamped by the Local Planning Panel last week
the original Development Application (DA) was amended to address parking and height provisions
“The proposal was amended to provide a third level of basement parking and increase the number of parking spaces from 46 to 63,” the Major Assessment Report states
“The overall building height was reduced by 0.5m by compressing the floor to ceiling height at Level 1 (to 3m)
and the ground floor presentation was refined to provide better equitable access.”
Three lots at 28-32 Somerset Street will be consolidated to provide the 1,680sqm site needed to build the large facility
The hotel is expected to employ 24 staff and will likely be managed by an internationally-renowned hotel operator
with negotiations already taking place in that space
The intersection at Somerset and Hargrave streets could undergo even more changes in the near future
with a proposed five-storey private hospital building
currently being considered by Penrith Council

South Gloucestershire Council and the Friends of Kingswood Park are celebrating after securing a grant of over £2.6 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to restore Kingswood Park to its former glory
The Council has been working in close partnership with the Friends of Kingswood Park community group to restore and enhance the park
with the latest announcement on 19 February being the biggest ever grant funded investment for a green space or park in South Gloucestershire
The grant from The Heritage Fund forms a large part of the total project cost of £3,360,857 and means the Friends Group can realise their dream of bringing the park back to its former glory – which has been a goal since the volunteer group was formed in 2005
Restoration of the park is part of the council’s wider £25 million Kingswood Masterplan
a regeneration vision for Kingswood town centre to make it a better place to live
Kingswood Park opened in 1934 and is the only significant area of green space in Kingswood town centre
The next step of the project will be to start implementing exciting plans to make the park and its heritage accessible to everyone
Funding will be used to improve park amenities including new centrally located accessible toilets and Changing Places facility
an improved and expanded play area with better equipment
all combining as a hub for the park and local community
There will also be improvements to signage around the park
gates and railings and other heritage features
additional new wildlife-friendly planting including native trees
Access will be improved by building a new ‘missing link’ footpath to create a full circuit of the park
along with the installation of new access ramps
A three-year programme of activities will also allow people from across the Kingswood community to learn about and celebrate the park’s heritage
Running alongside the improvement work will be a three-year programme of community events and activities with a focus on health and wellbeing
Cabinet Member for Communities and Local Place at South Gloucestershire Council
said: “We are absolutely thrilled that the National Lottery Heritage Fund has granted this considerable support to rejuvenate and improve Kingswood Park
The park is the most prominent green space in Kingswood town centre and has been enjoyed by generations of local people since 1934
We’re hoping the activities we put on will get even more people enjoying the park on a regular basis
“The funding is a game-changer in terms of how we’ll be able to transform and update the park for the benefit of residents and the wider local community
As ward member I understand how much of a positive impact this investment into the local community will have and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help and support of the Friends of Kingswood Park
We would like to extend our sincere thanks for their continued work and commitment.”
Director of England – London & South at The National Lottery Heritage Fund
said: “We’re thrilled to support Kingswood Park and their vision to create an accessible green space for the community
We believe that everyone should be able to access
connect with and enjoy nature on their doorstep – whether they are in urban areas or the countryside
It is thanks to National Lottery players that we can support projects like this which bring people together and transform the communities we live in

5-new-postcodes-enter-Top-10-preferred-locations-1732009886.png
Home buyers are expanding their choice of location in NSW to make their first property investment, according to a new report by prop tech firm InfoTrack. The company’s latest Property Market Update reveals that five new postcodes have made the list of the State’s top selling locations for first home buyers.
The report, which named the ten suburbs with the highest number of sales for first home buyers between 1 October and 31 December 2023, found that half the suburbs to make the list weren’t named in the previous quarter.
These included Lidcombe in third place, Gosford in fifth, Kingswood in sixth position, Penrith in eighth, and St Mary’s at number nine.
InfoTrack’s head of property Australia, Lee Bailie, says it’s the first time the postcodes of 2141, 2747, and 2760 featured among the State’s most popular locations for this buying cohort.
“The postcode 2141, which encompasses four suburbs – Berala, Lidcombe, Lidcombe North, and Rookwood – has made an impressive entry, coming in at third position for its debut in the top 10 list,” Bailie says.
The postcodes of 2747 and 2760 have a combined total of 15 suburbs, which surround the University of Western Sydney’s Kingswood campus, and include Kingswood, Cambridge Gardens, Colyton, St Mary’s, and Oxley Park.
“It makes sense we are seeing a younger buying cohort taking up residence in this geographical location, with the university so close and with the recently opened WestConnex tunnel extension of the M4 Motorway. It’s also clever long-term planning – purchasing property in proximity to major roads and facilities like a university can be a smart investment for students or city workers seeking accommodation,” he says.
The Central Coast’s postcode of 2250 was the only location outside of Greater Western Sydney to make the top ten.
“There are 24 suburbs, which made up the postcode 2250, which was also named at number five in Q1 of 2023 but fell from the list in Quarters 2 and 3,” Bailie continues.
“The beach lifestyle, greater property affordability, and commutable distance to the Sydney CBD account for this surge in popularity for Gosford, Erina, Mount White, Peats Ridge, and Wyoming.”
The postcode of 2145, encompassing Constitution Hill, Girraween, Greystanes, Mays Hill, Pemulwuy, Pendle Hill, South Wentworthville, Wentworthville, and Westmead, moved from sixth position in Q3 to take out first place in the latest report.
There was a near even split between apartments and houses for first home buyers, with 47 percent purchasing owner occupied houses while 49 percent opted for strata owner occupied.

Council is renewing the heart of Kingswood through the delivery of streetscape improvements to the eastern side of Bringelly Road as part of the NSW Government’s Your High Street program
Works have now commenced and weather permitting
are due for completion by the end of December 2022
From the Great Western Highway to the trading area opposite Wainwright Park
the works include widening of the footpath
improvements at the station forecourt area and completion of the Pedestrian Lighting Network
Council received over $925,000 in grant funding for the project through the Your High Street program
The project built on the success of the learnings and temporary trials held as part of the NSW Government’s Places to Love program
The new works focus on enhancing the village feeling at the core of Kingswood to help build community connection
Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said the Bringelly Road works are a key part of Council’s 10-year Think Bold Kingswood Place Plan which aims to continuously shape the future of the suburb
“The Bringelly Road works are part of Council’s long-term vision to ensure Kingswood is a safe and welcoming place
and a neighbourhood that supports the wellbeing of a diverse community and a thriving local business sector,” Cr Hitchen said
Council consulted with more than 130 Kingswood residents and businesses via a co-design workshop to guide the design of the works
Participants showed strong support for using colour and character to improve Kingswood’s public spaces and streetscape
starting with the replacement of the existing concrete footpath followed by trenching
the installation of new electrical light poles
The project is funded by the NSW Government’s Your High Street grant program which supports councils across NSW to make permanent improvements to the functionality and amenity of their high streets
“These innovative and creative projects will allow people to dine under the stars and create spaces to relax and connect
which will support local business operators as they bounce back from the pandemic,” Kiersten Fishburn
“We’re reimagining our streets as better places for people
which will drive an increase in foot traffic and bring the community together to enjoy the vibrancy our state has to offer.”

The new Kingswood MP Damien Egan has spoken of how proud he is to represent where he grew up
Mr Egan was joined by Pat McFadden, Labour’s national campaign co-ordinator, Chris Bryant
the shadow minister for creative industries
and cheering activists at a celebratory rally in Kingswood Park after being declared the winner of a by-election last night
The former mayor of Lewisham in London, who resigned to fight the by-election, overturned a Conservative majority of 11,220
Speaking to the PA news agency on Friday morning
“I went through so many emotions yesterday; I finished the election thinking ‘I’m not sure if I’m not sure if we’re over the line’
people have turned out and I’m just so grateful for people of Kingswood putting their trust in me
“I grew up Kingswood and went to school at Hanham High
it means a huge amount to be able to represent
there is a long list of issues that people have raised with me
to make sure that those voices are heard in Parliament.”
Mr McFadden said the results showed that people had shifted their support from the Conservatives to Labour
with the electorate having grown “disillusioned” with the Government
He said: “We did find voters coming across
people disillusioned with the Conservatives
“People who had voted Conservative in the past and they’re looking at a changed Labour Party
they are seeing a party now that they can put their trust in and in a democracy that is an awesome thing
“That’s what happened here in Kingswood and that’s what we know has to happen on a large scale if we have got a chance of winning in the general election.”
He added: “The message to Rishi Sunak is that every time he comes in contact with the electorate
there is no point in Rishi Sunak sitting in Number 10 waiting for something to turn up
