Works are set to start on the design and pre-construction phase of the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project in Queensland
which when delivered will double the capacity of the Gold Coast rail line
around 20 kilometres of new track and rail systems will be installed between the Kuraby and Beenleigh stations
increasing the corridor from two tracks to four
The rail line between Kuraby and Beenleigh is a key capacity bottleneck on the network
where trains share a single track in each direction
all-stop Beenleigh trains need to be held to one side to allow Gold Coast express trains to pass through
Accessibility upgrades will also be delivered at the Kuraby
A number of level crossing removals are also being delivered as part of the project
with equal investment from the Federal and Queensland governments towards the project aiming to reduce congestion in the lead up to – and during the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the project would deliver more frequent
“Entering into the design and pre-construction contract now will ensure this key infrastructure investment is completed ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Mickelberg said
“The Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project will address increasing population growth and customer demand between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and unlock capacity for additional train services for Queenslanders.”
The Martinus Degnan Joint Venture (Martinus Degnan) won the contract to deliver the Loganlea Station Relocation project last year
Bielby Hull Joint Venture (Bielby Hull) was awarded the design and construction contract to deliver the Open Level Crossing Removal at Beenleigh Road
More announcements are expected in future regarding additional work contracts

Project flythrough
The Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail (LGC) Project is taking a major step forward with major contractors shortlisted for three individual packages of work:
the major contractors will put forward their proposals for the individual project packages
The successful companies to deliver the works will be announced later this year
The announcement follows a year of significant progress including refining the reference design
extensive survey and geotechnical investigation works and community engagement
The Government is also working towards important final environmental approvals from the Federal Government
Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail will remove five level crossings
improving journey times and safety for road and rail users
This includes building three road-over-rail overpasses and removing two level crossings
while upgrading intersections and improving the local road network
The project will also deliver modern and accessible stations between Kuraby and Beenleigh
which will provide improved access to the train network for all Logan residents
the 20km section of rail line between Kuraby and Beenleigh (the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project corridor) is the next critical bottleneck to unlock
to provide capacity for more frequent rail services in the future
Increasing the number of tracks from two to four and allowing the free movement of both all-stops and express trains will mean more of our fastest services can run more frequently and more reliably.
This will allow public transport users to arrive at modern and accessible stations and spend less time waiting on the platform for a service to arrive
which means easier connections to the rest of South East Queensland through the existing rail network as well as the new services to be delivered through Cross River Rail and the Direct Sunshine Coast Line
The LGC Rail package will deliver the major rail works between Kuraby and Beenleigh including duplicating the tracks from two to four
local road works and active transport connections
The design and construction of this complex brownfield project will be delivered through an alliance contract
The Loganlea Station project will relocate and upgrade Loganlea train station to better connect customers with nearby health
and community services – particularly Logan Hospital.
The Loganlea Station Project is costed at $173.8 million
The broader Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project is jointly-funded by the Queensland and Australian governments with a 50-50 commitment towards the project cost of $5.75 billion
Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail is one of several large investments in the rail network well underway along with Cross River Rail
the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (B2N)
the European Train Control System (ETCS) and the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP)
which will build 65 new fully-accessible trains at Torbanlea
to run on the South East Queensland train network.
These projects will play an important role during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games while delivering improvements for everyday Queenslanders by providing more frequent and reliable services around South East Queensland

Group of men threaten elderly man and call 15-year-old boy ‘bloody terrorist’ at Kuraby mosque
Islamic leaders say rightwing extremists are behind an offensive act of intimidation at a Brisbane mosque
where a teenager was called a terrorist and Islam a cult
A group of men went to the Kuraby mosque in southern Brisbane on Wednesday, and abused and threatened worshippers after asking to be let inside to film what was going on, the Islamic Council of Queensland said
“They started saying Islam is a cult and they started going through the books,” council spokesman Ali Kadri said
He said the men threatened a 65-year-old man and told a 15-year-old boy
and we should burn this place down to the ground”
Another mosque in Brisbane – in Darra, a few suburbs away from Kuraby – was also targeted on Wednesday, but the group didn’t get past the closed front gate.
Read moreThe incident follows the arrest of 21-year-old Za’id Abdus Samad on terrorism charges during a raid on a Kuraby home on Saturday, but the council said Samad didn’t attend the Kuraby centre and it does not believe the events are linked.
Religious leaders will meet on Thursday night to discuss what Kadri says is the routine abuse Queensland Muslims suffer because of their faith.
“Our community is terrorised by these people,” he added.
Kadri said what happened at Kuraby wasn’t unusual and there appeared to be a group of people going into mosques with the intention of baiting worshippers and then capturing any angry responses on camera.
“If you ever want to talk about Islam, do it in a civilised manner,” he said. “Don’t be an uncivilised animal and go in and abuse children and old men and threaten children and old men.”
Worshippers turned their camera phones on the men who went into the mosque, capturing a portly man in a suit and tie badgering the teenage boy, referring to Islam as a cult and asking him if the marriage between the prophet Muhammad and his wife Ayesha amounted to paedophilia.

Kadri said police had what they needed to pursue the matter
He said authorities must take the intimidation campaign seriously and that existing laws don’t offer enough protection for victims of religious hatred
The premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, has urged people to exercise tolerance and respect.
“When people go to worship – and whether that is a church or any place of worship – people should be respectful of people’s faith and religions in this state,” she told reporters.
Palaszczuk said what happened at the Kuraby mosque was concerning, but she believed existing laws did afford the right level of protection in such instances.
Abdul Basith was stabbed to death outside his Kuraby home on Wednesday morning

who was killed after going to investigate a power issue outside his home on Brisbane's southside
say they do not believe the attack on the restaurant owner was random
The 35-year-old father of four was killed outside his Kuraby home early on Wednesday.
Detective Superintendent Tony Flemming said officers were scouring the area.
"We're in the process of continuing to take witness statements, we've also got police officers out doorknocking in the area for people who may be able to assist us in our investigation," he said.
"Anyone who was in the area the night before last between 10:30pm and 1:00am with possibly a dashcam … we would very much like to hear from you and anyone who has CCTV in the area."
Friends say Mr Basith (right) contributed significantly to Brisbane's Muslim community. (Facebook: Abu Amaan)
Detective Flemming said there was no clear motive at this stage.
"There is nothing in our investigation at the moment that indicates that this is racial or religious," he said.
He confirmed police were still working on the theory the electricity supply to Mr Basith's home might have been interfered with.
"That makes it clear someone was there — we don't know how long they were there for," he said.
State Emergency Service (SES) officers were also helping police search the area for the weapon.
"It's unquestionably a cutting implement of some sort," Detective Flemming said.
"We are still looking for the implement we think has killed [Mr Basith].
"As part of being thorough — this area does back onto bushland and as you can see … the railway line is quite a large potential area — so the SES have been most generous in helping us in our search."
He said Mr Basith's family were "very traumatised".
"They have reached out to other family members who are providing them support," Detective Flemming said.
It is believed Mr Basith was born in Saudi Arabia and moved to Australia several years ago.
Mr Basith was a member of the Kuraby mosque and was about to open another restaurant.
Police said there was no obvious motive for the attack. (ABC News: Allyson Horn)
