Vets at The University of Queensland are investigating how overweight golden retrievers and labradors are affected by their curvy physique
Chief investigator Dr Erika Meler from the School of Veterinary Science said the research would focus on the health and wellbeing of dogs by monitoring metabolism
“We’d like more pet owners to sign up to the study
whether their dogs are a healthy weight or on the curvier side,” Dr Meler said
“Labradors and golden retrievers are renowned for loving their food
but being overweight can have a negative influence on their health
“The findings from this study will further our knowledge of the link between gut health
“The findings could help prevent and manage obesity’s impact on dogs and provide useful data for human health as well.”
dogs will have a tailored exercise program
wear an activity tracking collar and get a free meal plan
PhD candidate Priscila Curso Almeida said veterinary professionals would perform all examinations during the study
scoring body condition and cognitive function tests
“Stool and blood samples will be collected from the dogs to further evaluate gut bacteria and blood metabolites
along with other non-invasive practices
“Pet parents will be invited to answer questions about their dog to understand their dog's mind and find out how we can improve their cognition and quality of life.”
Labrador owner Lisa Gore enrolled her dog Willow in the study to ensure Willow is kept as healthy as she can be
“We had an overweight labrador in the past
so we know how hard it is to help dogs lose weight,” Ms Gore said
“It’s really important especially for labradors to be conscious of their diet and exercise
“We want Willow to be enjoy a long life and be healthy and happy
“Being involved in the trial is great
the kids are on the app every night seeing what Willow is doing
how long she slept and whether she’s reached her exercise goal for the day.”
To participate pet owners must be willing to travel to the UQ Gatton Veterinary Medical Centre 4 times over the 7-month span of the study and for their dog to undergo a free health assessment prior to enrolment
Check eligibility and apply to participate via The Retriever Study web page

A surge in backyard breeding has pushed animal shelters across the Central Valley to the brink
and many are now overwhelmed with more dogs than they can handle
Labrador Retriever Rescue of Fresno (LRRF)
a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and rehoming Labrador Retrievers and Lab mixes
says it’s now being forced to turn dogs away due to a lack of foster homes
“We are really overwhelmed right now at Fresno Lab Rescue,” said Nancy Gilmore
a lot of dogs who are being dumped by breeders
LRRF has helped thousands of Labs find forever homes
But the rescue says it can’t continue without more community support
The organization is urgently calling for foster parents—people who are willing to temporarily care for a dog until it’s adopted
Gilmore says fostering is a great way for people to see if dog ownership is right for them
She knows firsthand how meaningful the experience can be
“I was supposed to have [Molly] for a week
and I’ve had her for a year now,” she said
“She’s actually learning to be a therapy dog
She’s going to be going out with me to hospitals soon
Many of the dogs rescued by LRRF have been neglected
the nonprofit provides everything foster families need—vet care
another foster parent with seven years of experience
Even if fostering full-time isn’t possible
LRRF says there are other ways to help: volunteers are needed to walk dogs
LRRF has placed nearly 3,000 Labs and Lab mixes into loving homes
the organization finds homes for over 200 dogs each year
Some adopters travel hundreds of miles to meet their new companions

Pippa flops by the Aga oven chewing on a stick
this labrador retriever puppy looks cute but clueless
We led a study to find out how genes have such a significant influence on why humans (and dogs) become overweight. It was their reputation for greediness that led us to focus on labrador retrievers. Genes are responsible for 40%-70% of human obesity – the rest is related to life experience
We extracted DNA from samples of saliva sent in by interested pet owners. More than ten years after the first dog slobber arrived in the post, the results of our study are striking: dogs don’t just share a home with their human owners
Each of the top five genes that increased the risk of weight gain in labradors were also implicated in human obesity
Such crossover is not astonishing; both dogs and humans evolved to deal with cycles of food glut and famine
Both have brain mechanisms that drive hunger and satiety to ensure food intake meets our daily energy requirements
And although we often think of fat as a problem
it does make sense to have some – it is an energy reserve to draw upon in times when food is scarce
The answer lies in the highly selective nature of dog breeding. A side effect of dog breeding is that it is remarkably straightforward to identify the genes which cause traits – even those like obesity
which come from the net effect of lots of changes along our DNA
I know obesity is a real problem for many of my patients
so we study dogs both for their own sake and as a “model” of human disease
The genes we found were most important in determining obesity in labradors were not frontrunners in genetic studies of obesity in people
but the dog results told us they can have a big effect on body weight and made them worth investigating
That was true of our top labrador obesity gene
Dogs who carried the problem version of this gene had around 8% more body fat
It turns out that DENND1B has a previously unrecognised role in the brain’s regulation of body weight
Leptin is a hormone produced from fat cells in the body
It acts in the brain by activating “melanocortin receptors” to reduce hunger and increase energy use
The system drives food intake in times of starvation and reduces it when the body has good energy reserves
We showed DENND1B is produced alongside melanocortin receptors in the brain and alters signalling by them
There is a lot we still need to learn about DENND1B
especially since it is notoriously difficult to go from finding a genetic association to providing a molecular link to how the gene is acting in the body
Although not the target of the latest wave of anti-obesity drugs
there are obesity medicines which target melanocortin receptors
so there is real value in understanding the nuances of that brain pathway
As well as learning about DENND1B function
we also scored dogs in the study as having a high or low obesity risk relating to a larger number of genetic changes
We used a questionnaire asking owners to put a number on their dogs’ appetite
their activity levels and the degree to which their owners limited what they got to eat
This told us that the genetic risk was largely down to increased appetite – our high-risk dogs were more likely to pester their owners for food
Low-risk dogs in our study were all slim or only marginally overweight
But their owners don’t get the credit – this group tended to stay at a healthy weight even if owners didn’t pay much attention to how they regulated their dogs’ diet and exercise
These owners need to be vigilant at all times to ensure their chow-hounds don’t get opportunities to snack and must steel themselves to resist the “big
brown eye treatment” that is such an effective way to beg for food
If you are unlucky enough to get genes that make you prone to obesity
Slim people aren’t morally superior – they just don’t need to exert as much willpower to stay at a healthy weight
So should we try to get rid of these obesity genes
and the reason why brings us back to Pippa
The guide dogs in our study had a higher genetic risk than pet labradors
Since they are the elite performers of the canine world
this maybe gives us a clue as to why greediness has become hard-wired into the labrador genome
“Because they’re so easy to train – they’ll do anything for a biscuit.”
The 51-year-old was sentenced in the Rockingham Magistrates Court last week after his dog named Alethea was found to have been suffering multiple painful conditions
The court heard Alethea was picked up by City of Rockingham rangers as a stray and taken to Baldivis Vet Hospital in October last year
RSPCA WA inspectors contacted her owner who claimed she must have escaped his backyard during a storm
He declined to surrender Alethea to RSPCA WA saying he owned and was responsible for her and her skin condition had started three months earlier
Alethea's entire body was covered in crusty lumps and open
The inspector seized the dog due to suspected animal cruelty offences
The offender said he realised the lumps were tumours and he had been treating them with Betadine
He also said he noticed Alethea had been bloated on her side but she had not been to a vet for two years
He explained he had not taken her to the vet about her lumps as she was old and there would be nothing the vet could do other than pain management.
The inspector transported Alethea to RSPCA WA where a vet examination found she had a severe generalised skin disease covering the majority of her body
which was causing significant pain and discomfort
painful osteoarthritis and spinal arthritis
and concurrent pulmonary parenchymal changes and increased respiratory rate
which indicated that the cancer had metastasised.
Alethea was provided with pain relief in an attempt to manage her chronic pain but was ultimately humanely euthanised as her quality of life was deemed unacceptable.
Magistrate Steven Malley told the offender as an animal owner
his responsibility was “strict”.
“[Alethea] wasn’t in great shape and can’t have been in great shape for some time,” he said.
RSPCA WA Inspector Manager Kylie Green said it was important for pet owners to understand that animal cruelty isn’t just deliberate acts of violence but also
“Alethea was in obvious pain with her skin condition and
in even more pain with cancer and arthritis,” she said
“It was her owner’s responsibility to take care of her and in this instance that meant taking her to the vet and he failed her miserably.”
The RSPCA relies on the community to report incidents of suspected cruelty and neglect
Report cruelty 24/7 on 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 358) or at rspcawa.org.au.

The Parrot Lady must have felt so terrible
even though she was doing absolutely nothing wrong
Sweet Pea is older than Copper by quite a lot; he was around when Copper first came home, and he has adored watching his brother grow into a pretty awesome dog! Copper even taught him how to bark, how sweet is that
so it's no surprise that Copper got to tag along to Sweet Pea's annual vet visit
was how upset Copper got when they took the bird back for his appointment
and he kept crying until the Cockatoo landed safely back in their mom's arms
It might just be the sweetest thing I've ever seen
There's nothing wrong with Sweet Pea, don't worry: he was just getting his annual “implant.” It's a hormone suppressor, which is desperately needed around this time of year. Without the implant, he may become aggressive and frustrated. It's best for everyone that he gets it
the implant slowly releases the medication over a period of weeks/months to help control hormonal behavior
hormone implants can also be used to stop excessive egg-laying
Sweet Pea was just fine: his vet adores him and took great care of him. It might have been better if Copper was allowed to go with him, though… What is it they say about birds of a feather

The Parrot Lady witnesses plots like this all the time. She has several birds and a dog
all of whom will gang up on her if they really feel the need
Sweet Pea is a total menace, and get this, this Black Lab is his wingman. His name is Copper, and he taught Sweet Pea everything he needed to know in order to become a dog, basically. Sweet Pea barks, he begs
This is not the first time they've teamed up
either: Sweet Pea and Copper once teamed up to bark at the trick-or-treaters
Their mom is used to their really odd adventures together; Sweet Pea has been training his brother since he was a puppy
The best part of this video is when Copper actually licks Sweet Pea's beak
as if they're sealing the deal with a kiss
Cockatoos can learn to get along with just about anybody as long as they're trained properly, though it can be a little more difficult with rescues. Birds are naturally less trusting than other pets, so it might take longer for them to trust you.
They also value consistency very much: if you don't keep up with their training as best you can
they may not feel like they can trust you consistently
One thing is for sure: Sweet Pea can always count on “his Labrador” to be a great partner in crime

“Lulu thinks blowing out my candles is very amusing.”
Lulu isn't the only one who finds this very amusing because everyone in the comments is falling for this silly-smart pup
Someone thought Lulu was in the right here and commented, “That’s placed dangerously close to the TV – she’s helping you
Get a fake one or put it somewhere safer.”
Someone else responded, “She doesn’t want to risk the TV catching fire because she won’t be able to watch Paw Patrol anymore.”
One person made a very good point and said
At least you won't worry about the candle burning down the house.”
Most of us pet parents know that you should be careful with lit candles and pets around the house
and thank goodness Lulu is here to remind us
You should never leave your cat or dog unsupervised around a candle because a wagging tail could knock it over or a curious kitty could get to close to the flame and singe their whiskers
The last thing you want is your nosy pet getting too close to a flame and either hurting themselves or burning your house down
If you love the warm glow of a candle but safety is a concern there are so many flameless
battery operated candles out there that you can find at any online retailer or big box store
They may not be as fun for your pup to blow out
but at last you don't have to worry about your rug catching on fire

Picture by Robert PeetA terrifying incident that almost killed Buddy
has left a community of dog lovers reeling
leaving a gaping 30-centimetre-long cavity that blood gushed out of instantly
and the sun was getting low as Mr Matthes and two-year-old Buddy were enjoying the stroll while chatting to other owners and their dogs that they regularly see on this patch of the beach
he was riding at speed towards us," Mr Matthes said
"I saw immediately that Buddy had injuries
You could see that his chest was starting to bleed ..
he'd been hit with force like he wasn't travelling it slowly
Buddy rushed away towards the water with his panicked owner running after him
I turned around and was like looking around expecting the person to stop
The person made no effort to stop at all and
the person just sped off," Mr Matthes said

he feared he was about to lose his best mate
bystanders rushed towards them bringing towels and offers of help
"Passers-by said 'what the hell'," Mr Matthes said
as he sat on the lounge room floor of his East Corrimal home with a bandaged Buddy curled up beside him
Mr Matthes was emotional when he recalled what happened next

A man called Jimmy offered to drive John and Buddy to the vet

"There was a group of people who just almost broke into action and they just helped us get him to where he needed to go to
just to help him get stable at the vet," Mr Matthes said
"It was people coming together and helping
As his eyes filled with tears and Buddy wagged his tail
I couldn't have done it without them," he said through tears
The impact from the motorbike was significant
it left a gaping hole in Buddy's chest and a leg injury
no bones were broken and all major organs were uninjured
they could see a 30-centimetre cavity [in Buddy's chest]," Mr Matthes said of the vet's comments
and Buddy will need a month of rest before he can head back to his beloved beach
Mr Matthes thought it might have been a male riding the motorbike, but he can't be sure, he does know that the vehicle was not registered.
"It looked unregistered, it didn't look like there were any plates or identification on it," he said.
Three days after he almost lost his beloved dog, Mr Matthes is still angry at the rider for speeding off.
"I expected, at the very least, for the person to slow down and then for them to stop. If there was ever an incident, that would just be what I would imagine someone would do," he said.
"This person had no intention of it and no regard for the public."

Home/Pet NewsLabrador Retrievers Go Wild for Raw Broccoli Like It’s the Most Delicious Dog TreatThese Labradors are all fighting to get the most broccoli
but my dog basically doesn't treat anything that grows from the earth as food
but anything that happens to be a fruit or a vegetable just doesn't track as edible to her
but as soon as she gets an inkling that it might be healthy
all bets are off (and I'm pretty sure she taught my human kid to avoid veggies
But when it comes to the Labrador Retrievers in the TikTok video below
it seems like they couldn't possibly have enough broccoli — or get to it fast enough
I don't know what kind of sorcery their mom is doing
but I've never seen a dog react to being offered a veggie quite like this
View directly on TikTok
On Monday, February 3, @dognamedstella shared this video of her dogs as they're being offered a head of broccoli
You'd think it was actually the meatiest
tastiest dog treat in the world the way they're going at it
Neither of them can bite the broccoli fast enough
If there was a world record for eating a vegetable in a short amount of time
I'm pretty sure these two would have broken it
Commenters were just as impressed by the Labradors as I was
with one person joking that the dogs were “aggressively eating the trees.”
or do the pups in this video have especially healthy tastes in food
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), not only do many dogs like broccoli, but it's totally okay for them to enjoy it as a treat — raw or cooked. Just don't add any seasonings, because many can be harmful for our canine friends.
Broccoli as a treat also comes with benefits like adding fiber to your dog's diet, as well as vitamin C. But the AKC recommends that broccoli doesn't make up more than 10% of what your pup eats, since this veggie contains isothiocyanates, which can cause stomach upset.
You will also want to keep in mind that the stalks can cause obstructions in a dog's esophagus, so make sure you cut it into bite sized pieces to avoid that happening!
Of course, not all dogs will like broccoli, and that's fine too. But if yours does? Chow down in moderation… and maybe have them send my dog a note that it didn't kill them to eat a vegetable.

Morrie the Labrador Retriever has no poker face whatsoever
The best part of this entire video is the way that they also showed another clip from him greeting another person
because he loves all of his family members
Choosing his favorite person is really just a matter of who gives the best scratches and who is most generous with their treats… two areas in which Great Grandma shines
Morrie is a classic example of a Lab: he is crazy excited to see Great Grandma
Even though he doesn't seem particularly excited to greet the “spare human” in the first clip
Labrador Retrievers are some of the sweetest
They get exorbitantly excited to make new friends
whether that's people they've never met or other dogs
They might get more excited in some scenarios than others
Sometimes, there is too much of a good thing, though; if they're not properly trained, they can get a little over-excited. Just make sure they know not to jump, nip
or scratch at their new friends and you'll be golden
Morrie is perfectly trained in this regard: he's not jumping up on Great Grandma at all
He's just kind of sitting there and vibrating with glee; I just know the whole porch is shaking
let’s take a look at both Liberal leadership candidates' stance on issues concerning Labrador
Since Premier Andrew Furey announced his retirement from provincial politics in February 2025
Liberal MHAs John Abbott and John Hogan have been working to gain support to replace him as the new party leader
Newfoundland and Labrador’s next premier will be decided on May 3
but as their time for campaigning comes to a close
let’s take a look at both candidates’ stance on issues concerning Labrador

Create an account or sign in to continue your reading experience
Both MHAs have travelled to Labrador and spoken with residents
with Hogan landing in Happy Valley-Goose Bay just last week and Abbott having visited just over a month ago
Abbott said his biggest takeaway from speaking with Labradorians was their desire for the provincial government to invest again in helping meet their aspirations
He highlighted the needs of the north coast
including key transportation issues like a road from Goose Bay to Nain and improved air access
and finding a way to get a transmission line to the north coast so they have access to hydroelectric power and diesel generating power
critical issues raised include a transmission line to support the mining industry
They’re looking towards government to break that barrier and provide infrastructure so we can get new housing built.”
they’re looking for what many communities on the island are also seeking — improved and expanded health
Having previously been the minister of mental health and addictions
Abbott spoke more specifically to the health-related issues in the region
recruitment and retention are significant problems
“We’re going to have to stay focused on that to help recruit and retain health care workers,” he said
“That’s going to be critical in terms of the mental health and addiction services.”
Abbott had previously announced that a mental health and addictions recovery centre would be put in Happy Valley-Goose Bay
“That will help address a lot of the needs there in Labrador,” he said
He also emphasized the need to work with Indigenous governments and find ways to better support them in setting up their own service
“That will really take a lot of pressure off people having to leave Labrador to come to the island
has been working on all kinds of options to minimize the cost for individuals to have to transfer
Hogan touched down in Happy Valley-Goose Bay just last week with his eight-year-old daughter in tow
“It’s her first time in Labrador,” he said
But it wasn’t Hogan’s first time in the region
He’s been to Labrador several times for work when he was a lawyer
having done a few hearings there and visited when in various ministerial roles as well
Hogan said he was first greeted by Labrador Liberal MP Yvonne Jones when he arrived at the airport
Jones took them around to speak with residents in the area
“I’ve had conversations with [Jones] during the leadership (race)
she’s mentioned that there’s an infrastructure gap she feels that exists here in Labrador,” he explained
“That Labradorians want to feel that the government of Newfoundland and Labrador is looking at them just as much as looking at any other part of the province
Hogan highlighted that there has been some talk surrounding an addiction and recovery centre
“I hope to meet and talk to the town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay because I know there’s been some discussions back and forth,” he said
“I think the town may feel that those discussions haven’t been fulsome as of late.”
He emphasized his desire to ensure that everybody’s on the same page about the facility
“The Stay at Home policy for the Department of Health and for Newfoundland and Labrador Health services is very important,” he said
“We know seniors want to stay in their communities
While time may come in people’s lives when they have to move out of their homes and move into personal care homes and then maybe into long-term care
Hogan would like to try to keep folks at home as long as possible
“But if and when they need to move into those other facilities
we need to make sure they’re up to standards that are acceptable for our seniors,” he said
“And if that requires a level of oversight that doesn’t already exist from a bureaucratic perspective
then that’s something that we’ll need to put in place.”
Another critical issue for Labrador — air travel cost — is a federal responsibility
and Hogan was hopeful newly-elected Prime Minister Mark Carney will help with those costs and barriers
lowering trade barriers by cutting passenger fees by at least half
I think it’s very clear that he’s open to listening to issues that Newfoundland and Labradorians face,” he said

The 14-week-old Labrador will be following Cr Prince everywhere he goes
Cr Prince said he was an experienced volunteer for Vision Australia
the dog will go "practically everywhere" with Cr Prince
while a trainer will visit regularly as Ornella learns the basics of being a seeing eye dog
and generally we just try not to leave them alone at home for more than three to four hours," Cr Prince said
Volunteering with Vision Australia was a rewarding experience
and he recommended it to anyone considering taking on a pup
"It's a great way just to change your perspective on life and how to engage with people," he said
"Just some of the circumstances that people who are vision impaired or other things in the disability space
it really just helps grow a better understanding," he said
there were about 450,000 Australians who were blind or who had low vision and about 12,500 more people experienced vision loss each year
That number was expected to increase by 25 per cent before 2030
Whether Ornella would provide additional guidance to Bendigo's council was still up for debate
She might be the casting vote in a tied situation," Cr Prince said

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered genes linked to obesity in both Labradors and humans
They say the effects can be over-ridden with a strict diet and exercise regime
Dogs at high genetic risk of obesity showed signs of having higher appetite
as has also been shown for people at high genetic risk of obesity
Researchers studying British Labrador retrievers have identified multiple genes associated with canine obesity and shown that these genes are also associated with obesity in humans
The dog gene found to be most strongly associated with obesity in Labradors is called DENND1B
and the researchers found that this gene is also linked with obesity in people
DENND1B was found to directly affect a brain pathway responsible for regulating the energy balance in the body
An additional four genes associated with canine obesity
but which exert a smaller effect than DENND1B
were also mapped directly onto human genes
“These genes are not immediately obvious targets for weight-loss drugs
because they control other key biological processes in the body that should not be interfered with
But the results emphasise the importance of fundamental brain pathways in controlling appetite and body weight,” said Alyce McClellan in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Physiology
“We found that dogs at high genetic risk of obesity were more interested in food,” said Natalie Wallis in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Physiology
She added: “We measured how much dogs pestered their owners for food and whether they were fussy eaters
as has also been shown for people at high genetic risk of obesity.”
The study found that owners who strictly controlled their dogs’ diet and exercise managed to prevent even those with high genetic risk from becoming obese - but much more attention and effort was required
people at high genetic risk of developing obesity will not necessarily become obese
if they follow a strict diet and exercise regime - but they are more prone to weight gain
no single gene determined whether the dogs were prone to obesity; the net effect of multiple genetic variants determined whether dogs were at high or low risk
The results were published on 6 March in the journal 'Science'
“Studying the dogs showed us something really powerful: owners of slim dogs are not morally superior
If you have a high genetic risk of obesity
then when there’s lots of food available you’re prone to overeating and gaining weight unless you put a huge effort into not doing so,” said Dr Eleanor Raffan
a researcher in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Physiology
Development and Neuroscience who led the study
She added: “By studying dogs we could measure their desire for food separately to the control owners exerted over their dog’s diet and exercise
it’s harder to study how genetically driven appetite requires greater willpower to remain slim
The current human obesity epidemic is mirrored by an obesity epidemic in dogs
About 40-60% of pet dogs are overweight or obese
which can lead to a range of health problems
Dogs are a good model for studying human obesity: they develop obesity through similar environmental influences as humans
and because dogs within any given breed have a high degree of genetic similarity
their genes can be more easily linked to disease
The researchers then examined whether the genes they identified were relevant to human obesity
They looked at both large population-based studies
early onset obesity where single genetic changes are suspected to cause the weight gain
The researchers say owners can keep their dogs distracted from constant hunger by spreading out each daily food ration
for example by using puzzle feeders or scattering the food around the garden so it takes longer to eat
or by choosing a more satisfying nutrient composition for their pets
Raffan said: “This work shows how similar dogs are to humans genetically
Studying the dogs meant we had reason to focus on this particular gene
which has led to a big advance in understanding how our own brain controls our eating behaviour and energy use.”

Home/Pet NewsBlack Labrador Thinks In-Law Pups Are a ‘Different Level of Crazy’ and It’s LOL FunnyOof
We've all heard the old saying, “You can't choose your in-laws.” One Black Labrador has brought that phrase to life with her “Get me out of here!” face while visiting family
In a hilarious video uploaded to TikTok by LolaAndOakley
a pooch has had it with this trip to a relative's home
She clearly wants to leave ASAP and it's beyond relatable
View directly on TikTok
The caption really says it all “POV: When you visit the in-laws and they're a different level of crazy.”
Roughhousing obviously isn't this dog's idea of a good time
It's like the doggie version of a frat party going on behind you
This reminds me of getting stuck at the kiddie table at Thanksgiving with the younger cousins who start burping contests or try to make each other laugh until soda shoots out their noses
We've all been this dog at some point or another
I think I've made this face myself while attending children's birthday parties at Chuck E
Another person writes, “This is how my doggie reacts when all my nieces and nephews come over.”
If you're accustomed to a relatively quiet home, visits like these can be overwhelming. The good news is this pup was given plenty of pets and treats following this wild visit and is doing just fine.
Something tells us the next time a trip to see this crew is mentioned, this pup is going to make other plans!

A woman captured the heartwarming moment she walked into her room to find her dog sleeping on the floor—having seemingly given up her bed for a pile of beloved soft toys—a scene that has melted thousands of hearts online
snoozing while her soft toys rest on her pink fluffy bed
The text layered over the clip refers to her as a "sweet soul," saying she "would rather give her bed to her teddies than move them."
She then moves to the side, and Doris gets on the bed. This heartwarming scene has gathered 56,700 likes (@doristhegoldenlab)
the owner mentioned Doris has five beds in the house and multiple baskets for her teddies
She wrote: "She carries [them] round and then puts in her beds."
Newsweek has reached out to @doristhegoldenlab for comment
many dogs are naturally drawn to soft plush toys because they simulate prey—especially when they squeak or can be torn apart
This kind of play can be deeply satisfying for dogs
particularly those that enjoy the thrill of the chase or "killing" their toy
However, soft toys should always be used with supervision
especially if your dog tends to destroy them
Ingesting parts like squeakers can lead to serious health issues that might require surgery
these toys should be "play with me only," meaning your dog should have access to them only during interactive play sessions and not when left alone
Soft plush toys can also be helpful for engaging calmer or less playful dogs
especially if you make the toy act like prey by dragging it along the ground or keeping it just out of reach
This can spark interest even in dogs that don't usually show much enthusiasm for toys
While puppies often love rubbery chew toys
older or senior dogs may prefer softer toys that are easier to hold and tug
Even timid or less confident dogs may respond well to soft or furry toys when introduced gently and playfully

Labradorians are now taking it upon themselves to voice their expectations for the next leader of our province
Liberal contenders John Abbott and John Hogan have been travelling the province to express their individual intentions for seeking to become the province’s leader
Following both candidates’ visits to Labrador
Labradorians have voiced their own expectations for the next leader of our province
One particular issue that Happy Valley-Goose Bay resident Sacha Fraser feels needs to be at the forefront is public safety
“Labrador is diverse and the needs are equally as diverse
So I can speak to Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the public safety issues and the need to protect our most vulnerable in society
Fraser has spoken out on multiple occasions regarding the safety concerns in her community
In terms of expectations for the incoming premier
she said the prioritization of public safety is “a non-negotiable.”
Fraser would like to see the development of a comprehensive plan to deal with these issues effectively
“We’ve been pushing for addictions treatment
a higher level of accountability when it comes to the justice system
and closing those loopholes,” she explained
The lack of significant change in the last few years has left Fraser feeling as though the provincial government isn’t taking these problems seriously enough
whether they be business owners or private citizens
have voiced concerns about their safety or the safety of their children,” she explained
“So if the concerns are dismissed and the empathy for the people is not shown
“Parents wanna stay here with their children and their grandkids and they can’t because there’s nothing here.”
People are either having to move because they can’t afford the housing that’s there
they can no longer afford the housing that they have
“They can’t afford to stay here,” she said
O’Rielly explained that her sister has four grandchildren
With the cost of living skyrocketing and lack of affordable housing
there’s a real possibility that she may have to move away once she retires
O’Rielly added that a friend she went to school with is now getting kicked out of his own apartment because it is needed for contractors
finding another apartment would be challenging which has led Burke to protest outside the building
I own my own home but I know after I retire I’m not going to be able to upkeep the house
So it’s either I rent a very expensive apartment here that you can’t get
or I have to sell my house and I have to leave
“They haven’t done a thing for Labrador City,” O’Rielly emphasized
but they have never done a thing for Lab City.”
An aging population alongside a higher cost of living is resulting in an increased need for both seniors housing
and improved access health care and long-term care services
added Happy Valley-Goose Bay resident Barry Knight
“I’m an old guy so health care is at the top of my list,” he said
“I’ve had five doctors in the last five years
I barely get to know the person’s name and then they’re gone and I got a new one.”
While he stressed his understanding that his community is no exception and that the health-care system is in trouble across the country
he strongly believes the next premier needs to work on finding better solutions for the issues at hand
“I don’t know what it’s like for sure in the rest of the province
but the wheels of government move very slowly.”
he emphasized that they’ve had a homeless shelter in the works for the last four years
“and so far there hasn’t been a brick laid
Looking around at the increased homelessness in their community
Knight explained how bad he feels for those who are homeless especially during the winter months
“I feel bad for the people who are homeless
which we have still with us today with 10 centimetres of snow,” he said
Knight added that while he hasn’t had a negative experience himself with long-term care
a friend of his has been in the hospital for about five months and he’s on the waitlist
“There’s a huge waiting list in there and they don’t know when they’ll be able to move him,” he explained
“I visit him in the hospital and he’s not happy
“He doesn’t eat much because he doesn’t like the food
I guess there’s noises and things going on in the hospital that are pretty disturbing
I feel bad for him and I’m sure there are many other people who are trying to get into the home.”
Knight highlighted the cruel realization that if all the beds in long-term care are taken then no one else can get in until someone dies — or they create more space for more beds

Liberal candidate Philip Earle was the first elected MP declared in the 2025 federal election as the residents of the Labrador riding voted to send him to Ottawa
covering 300,000 square kilometres and 30 communities
was how important it is for candidates to make it out to the North Coast and see folks face to face
“No matter how big the community is,” he said
“tell them who you are and what you want to do
you would have to get out there and try to get the message across as opposed to sending off a little something on Facebook.”
The Telegram spoke with Liberal candidate – now official MP – who said he felt it was important to reach as many communities as possible to ensure he was able to engage with all voters
I will become the voice of Labradorians in the nation’s capital at the seat of government
it’s important to listen and to engage with all of the voters and give voters that opportunity,” Earle explained
“I feel the only way to do that is to visit
to listen — and the only way to do that is to get there.”
Earle had been to all but one of the communities in Labrador
He wasn’t able to reach Black Tickle on two occasions due to poor weather
Having had the opportunity to engage with Labradorians across the region
he said he was able to give them his perspective on the issues that are important to them
they’ve allowed me to make a commitment to them that I will represent them well in Ottawa
and I believe that that confidence will be borne out on election day
and I will be able to represent people in Labrador the way they expect me to,” he said
Earle said he felt confidence and optimism leading into the election
sentiments that were evidently rightly placed as he took an early lead with 64.5 per cent of votes right out of the gate on election night
While he was able to have a private reaction to the initial announcement at home with his wife April
it wasn’t long after that Earle was walking into a room of supporters at Hotel North in Happy Valley-Goose Bay
He described it as a moment of joy and excitement following a short but long election
but long because of the vast geography of Labrador and having criss-crossed it a number of times,” he explained
“I would suggest it felt longer than it actually was
knowing that those were the individuals that worked so hard to get my message out
Among supporters at the venue Monday night was outgoing Labrador MP Yvonne Jones
who Earle said made a significant contribution to his campaign
that it was important to him to distinguish himself from Jones
while also acknowledging the vast knowledge and insight Jones has to offer
“While Yvonne gave support and certainly a lot of moral support and encouragement
her involvement in the campaign was limited to her knowledge of Labrador and the encouragement to take this on,” he explained
Earle said he was humbled by their show of support and appreciative of the confidence that had been placed in him
“I’m very much looking forward to working collaboratively with them on the issues that are important to Labradorians
bringing back to Labradorians the results that they expect from their MP,” he said
he felt the key issues included the impacts of tariffs on the natural resource export economy
Having spoken with many residents across the district
Earle said there are a host of additional issues that have been brought to his attention
including the potential impacts of tariffs connected to the fishery
Earle will be preparing to step into the political sphere in a role that is brand new to him
“It’s my first time running for elected office,” he said
“I’ll be waiting with baited breath for the information that will be forthcoming to tell me when I have to be in Ottawa to be sworn in
work for Labradorians begins tomorrow morning.”
When anyone hears talk of ophiolite complexes in Newfoundland and Labrador — and knows what they are — they likely think of the four barren mountainous areas along the island’s west coast where the Earth’s mantle protrudes up from the surface
North Arm Hills and The Tablelands aren’t the only places where the Earth’s crust — usually below ground in most parts of the world — has broken the ground in the province
It’s two such areas on the island of Newfoundland that First Atlantic Nickel Corp.
While the company is mainly interested in the nickel resources found in the two ophiolite complexes
it has also entered into a research partnership with the Colorado School of Mines to explore geologic hydrogen as an energy source in the two areas
a 103-square-kilometre area on the Northern Peninsula where the company has what it’s calling the Atlantis Project
a 71-square-kilometre area in central Newfoundland where the company has its Atlantic Nickel Project
Rather than the awe-inspiring sights of the four mountainous ophiolite complexes in western Newfoundland
and the one about 40 kilometres south of Grand Falls-Windsor are both low-lying areas where the mantle has barely been thrust up to be visible
The company is mostly excited about the nickel resources in these areas
particularly because it differs from the sort of nickel currently being mined at Voisey’s Bay in Labrador
Both areas contain extensive ultramafic rock formations
characterized by awaruite-bearing serpentinized peridotites
That’s significant because awaruite nickel-iron alloy mineralization can
unlike the type of nickel found at Voisey’s Bay
It has no sulfur in it that has to be removed and the concentrated nickel can be extracted through crushing
The process requires less energy than smelting and is cleaner since there are no environmentally hazardous tailings left from smelting
“It could be the lowest carbon footprint nickel produced in the industry,” Adrian Smith
First Atlantic Nickel’s chief executive officer
the company said the development of awaruite resources is crucial
given China’s control in the global nickel market
Chinese companies refine and smelt between 68 to 80 per cent of the world’s nickel and an estimated 84 per cent of Indonesia’s nickel output
reduces dependence on foreign processing controlled by China
leading to a more secure and reliable supply for North America’s stainless steel and electric vehicle industries
While the nickel’s potential to be a profitable venture to mine has allowed First Atlantic Nickel to raise enough capital from the private market to develop the project
the exploration data has helped it establish a research partnership with the Colorado School of Mines to do work on analyzing the potential of the deposits to harness geological hydrogen as an energy source
Ophiolites are globally recognized as prime sources of geologic hydrogen created through natural processes as minerals found within them interact
Some of the most significant geologic hydrogen discoveries in the world occur in ophiolites
“Geologic hydrogen systems are a combination of mineral systems and natural gas systems,” explained Dr
we have the unique combination of expertise from both the mining industry and oil and gas industry to advance geologic hydrogen exploration and stimulated hydrogen monitoring.”
such as what’s been found in the areas being explored by First Atlantic Nickel
couldn’t happen without the presence of abundant hydrogen
the findings so far underscore the region’s promise for this research
The research into the geological hydrogen potential of the sites is being paid for by the Colorado School of Mines and its own access to financial resources
including backing from the United States government
“The nickel is what we can put our finger on and touch and process and sample and be able to show
The geologic hydrogen at these sites could potentially be harnessed at a lower cost than other sources
and could represent a sustainable energy resource that could substantially complement existing energy systems
“The Colorado School of Mines is funded by the U.S
government to research hydrogen and find opportunities
but just to aid in the research,” said Smith
“But that benefits (First Atlantic Nickel) because that provides work programs for us
to advance our understanding of the potential of having hydrogen resources on our properties.”
He hopes to see more federal programs offered in Canada to further the exploration of the geological hydrogen potential of their properties
While First Atlantic Nickel has already been building roads and drilling holes in anticipation of developing a larger nickel operation at the central Newfoundland site
the geological hydrogen piece is still relatively new for the project
Smith hopes representatives from the Colorado School of Mines will be able to visit the site this summer to take a closer look at the site and the project
but said it’s difficult to put a timeline on how that aspect of the project will proceed
First Atlantic has just raised capital from a strategic partner
The first phase 1 drilling resulted in a brand new discovery called the RPM zone on the south part of the property
Drill assays and metallurgical recovery testing have returned great results with more pending
The company hopes to start phase 2 in 2025 as soon as the ground dries up
would like to have an initial resource by early 2026
with further metallurgical testing to demonstrate the upgrading and concentration of the nickel as high as 60 per cent concentrate
First Atlantic is striving to develop a similar quality awaruite nickel project to FPX
a project in British Columbia that uses clean magnetic separation instead of smelting
which would include three years of construction and 29 years of operation
First Atlantic hopes a similar-sized project could offer comparable and similar benefits to NL’s economy

where he has sticks of just about every size imaginable
he gets ample time in the fresh outdoors to run and play
Knowing that bins are stacked high in a never-ending supply must make it even better
What more could a dog who loves to chew and be outdoors ask for
it’s always best to watch your dog when they are chewing sticks to ensure they don’t ingest any splinters or get an intestinal blockage from eating a large piece
dogs should always be supervised when chewing
“He’s a billionaire in dog currency!” There’s no question about that
he’s undoubtedly the employee of the month
“My dog wants to know where and how he can be adopted?” I’m afraid to let my dogs see this lifestyle
While some claim Disney is the happiest place on earth, this firewood company could very well be the dog equivalent. They should think about hosting canine parties where each dog gets to take home their own stick while the humans leave with delightfully exhausted pups.
