On the field, Kyle Langford’s grown accustomed to change.
Whether it’s being issued the challenge of becoming a midfielder as a young half forward or becoming the No.1 key target in attack as a more experienced head, Langford’s taken on multiple roles in stride throughout a career that’s now entering its 11th year.
Now, the 28-year-old’s not only embracing his role as an on-field leader, but also as a father off the field after welcoming his first child in November, making this pre-season the most unique he’s encountered so far.
Already managing the full-on lifestyle of a professional athlete, the added responsibilities in Langford’s life have allowed for a new perspective as he enters 2025 with the Bombers.
Here, the 153-gamer gives an insight into his personal pre-season, details one of the early turning points in his Dons career and discusses his excitement over a growing array of options in the side’s forward mix this season.

The first two or three months (of this pre-season and being a dad) have been quite trying, obviously balancing the commitments of raising a newborn as well as being an elite athlete.
There’s definitely been a lot of personal learning and it’s something that will change the way I look at football and life moving forward.
My partner Louise has been incredible in allowing me to get my extra sleep and do the things that I need to do when I show up to work, perform and put in maximum effort whenever I'm here. She's been an amazing support.
I think we timed it really well to be able to have her just before pre-season started, so hopefully going into the season we'll be in a bit more of a routine with it.
I think now that I’ve got a daughter, you definitely look at the game differently and start thinking more about your life looks like after football.
Talking with some of the older boys that have kids just changes your perspective and allows you to really dive into your days off with a new outlook as well, you're there to spend a bit of quality time and I think something that I have noticed is it’s definitely made me more present at home.
When you’ve got a screaming kid at home or your partner’s feeling the stress, I think you forget about your troubles with footy pretty quickly and it just brings you back down to home base.
Hear in-depth from Kyle Langford ahead of his 150th game, brought to you by Yakult.
I feel like I'm still so young and I’ve got so much more time to give to the Club, but coming into my 11th year, there’s definitely an added responsibility to help the younger players and build them up as far as possible.
Ultimately, I'm not getting any younger and I want success here as soon as possible – we aren’t owed anything and we need to keep working for that.
Jayden (Laverde) and I were drafted together and he’s been incredible for our defenders, Zach's an outstanding Captain through the middle and I’d like to think I'm helping out with the forwards and doing my bit as well.
Really, I think we’re there to guide and support the likes of Andy McGrath and Mason Redman, Nic Martin, those kinds of guys to play really good football, but also as the ones who will be the next generation of leaders and take this club in the direction we want it to.
Todd (Goldstein) probably inflates our average age a little bit, I think we would be right down the bottom end of the league in terms of experience.
Like I said, I’ve played 150 games now heading into year 11 and my focus is purely on everyone else. Obviously, I've still got to perform and I’ve still got a job to do, but I put a lot more time and energy into the younger players, working with the forwards in particular.
Nate Caddy, Harry Jones, Isaac Kako, Archer Day-Wicks, Jayden Nguyen, those are the kind of players you want to really get up to speed as quickly as possible and provide opportunities to improve, because the better they play, the better we all play.
Watch some of Kyle Langford's best moments throughout his career ahead of his 150th game this weekend.
I think in the early days, you're obviously trying your best to get a game under your belt and you find yourself fighting between VFL and AFL selections, literally trying to just get a kick and stay in the team.
It can be a constant battle between your own performance and team performance at times - I guess as you find a consistency in your football and you're playing week in, week out, your tendencies naturally change to the team and finding ways to help develop the younger players to be able to get to where we are now.
I remember when I was playing consistently as a forward in the AFL team in my first couple of years - and I’ve spoken about this previously - but it was a conversation that I had with John Worsfold where he said, “I want you to become a midfielder.”
I spent essentially the next 18 months playing in the VFL after that.
That extended time in the VFL, once I got back into the AFL team, it helped me grow and evolve as a player. Having those experiences as a forward initially and then a midfielder allowed me to come into the team, and I think that's what we saw for a number of years was the versatility for me to play multiple roles.
A lot of people might say I came onto the scene in 2023 when I was thrown deep forward, but I think I was playing some really good football prior to that - probably from 2020 onwards - where I was a consistent player and performer, and I was able to play multiple roles for the team.
I think I was able to provide whatever they needed and it gave me a really good platform so once I did get into a position of strength, I could really capitalise on that.
Kyle Langford turns Jack Buckley inside out with a beautiful finish before nailing his fourth in an instant.
We actually had quite a small forward group in 2024, and this year we’re probably on par with the midfielders in terms of how many numbers we have rolling through.
We obviously have a lot of young talent coming through with ‘Cads’ and Kako, and I think ‘Scotty's been pretty open with us that the forward mix could change week in, week out depending on the opposition, so I think there could be as many as a consistent nine players rolling through at different stages.
It was mentioned that we've had 23 personal bests in our most recent time trial, albeit with a change of surface and a few other things, but I think it's credit to a lot of guys who went away throughout the off-season and the Christmas break and really worked hard on their body.
That’s only one piece of the puzzle, but I've been really impressed with that, especially from the young boys coming in. Their ability to buy into what we're trying to do and their hunger to learn has been seriously impressive from a first-year group of players.

It was really cool for us just going on the camp which we had up at Mt
something a bit more connective to just build that rapport between different age groups and actually go out away and spend time with each other
There were a bunch of different challenges on that trip
I thought that was really good for the group as well
given we haven't been able to do something like that for a while
I think we needed to improve on a number of things before we were able to really dive into the connection piece and we've made really good inroads in a bunch of different areas
The work we’ve put in has allowed us to spend a bit more time on our connection as a group
We saw that with the camp and even with the coaches allowing us to have an off-site day away from the club where we get to spend more time together as a collective
Doing those activities as a team and within our line groups helps to build that cohesion amongst a group

Ridley will be unavailable for at least the round-two clash with Adelaide
while Langford's scans on Saturday revealed a right hamstring strain that will sideline him for four to six weeks
Tall forward Peter Wright (ankle) is also out of action and Scott will look at a range of options to replace Langford
the Bombers' leading goal-kicker of the last two seasons
"We've got some players that we think are playing pretty well at VFL level
but the options open to us are either personnel based or they're structure based," Scott said
but that's what you have to do in this competition
Ridley was ruled out with concussion after he was caught high by Hawthorn's Jack Scrimshaw
who managed just nine games last year and suffered a hamstring strain in pre-season
The latest setback came as finals hopefuls Essendon dominated a raft of key statistical indicators in their season-opener against Hawthorn but lacked their opponents' class and efficiency
The Hawks kicked seven of the first eight goals and while the Bombers twice got back within 18 points during the final term
Jordan Ridley suffered a concussion during the Bombers' season-opening loss
(Daniel Pockett/AAP PHOTOS)"They sliced us up through the middle at different stages and we sat back off them a little bit too much
particularly in the first quarter," Scott said
"I was pleased that we were able to adjust to that and get the game somewhat back on our terms
and I thought in the second half we controlled big parts of it
"The screen that I look at was flashing green on most metrics
but the one that I don't look at so much is the scoreboard
Scott was buoyed by the form of midfielder Jye Caldwell
who had a career-best 36 disposals and 10 clearances
as well as teen forward Isaac Kako's debut
scored the opening goal of the game with a clever volley under pressure and finished with 1.2 from 14 disposals
He did some really good things," Scott said
"I like the way he pressured and he gives us energy that we haven't had in the forward half in the last couple of years
I think we're going to see him only get better from here."

forward Nate Caddy found himself on the ball
where his habit of running far more than necessary caused great amusement for teammate Kyle Langford
With midfield burst player Jake Stringer traded to GWS
the Bombers were sampling other big-bodied forwards who can be disruptors in their midfield
Caddy is one of the best runners at Essendon
so coach Brad Scott moved him up the field as part of a forward rotation to introduce a dynamic power player on the ball
It was not a resounding success – Caddy’s excited running does need refinement – but nor was it a failure
Next week it might not be Caddy thrown into that role
or Harry Jones or Langford for that matter

so the Bombers have begun educating him about playing in the midfield.Credit: AFL Photos via Getty Images
“Nate and myself both finished top five in the two-kilometre time trial
Harry Jones is another elite game-day runner
so all of a sudden you have got three of us kind of hybrid tall-forwards that are considered elite runners,” Langford said
“There’s definitely scope to play further up the field
generally clocks up about 16-17 kilometres on game day
I think there’s really good flexibility within our side.”
That flexibility has seen players thrown around this pre-season
and Langford admits the changes have left some young players flat at being asked to play uncustomary roles
Langford was not shy about speaking up to make sure his younger teammates understand versatility was a virtue
“Some of the younger players are a little bit frustrated at the moment because they’re being thrown around to different positions
that’s one of your biggest strengths because you’re not pigeonholed in one position
and it’s just going to make you a better player,” Langford said
“It’s one of those things where some of the players just have to drop their ego because they want to be an inside mid
I think it’s take on what’s best for the team and try and take the learnings you can and just go with it.”
then coach John Worsfold told him he saw him as a midfielder and he spent more than a year in the VFL learning the position
“I definitely sulked at the time,” Langford said
That definitely made me grow up as a footballer
it’s definitely the best thing that could have been for my development
“I think if you continually play average football as a forward and I don’t learn that stuff that I did learn
I don’t know whether I’d be playing the football I am today

“I understand there’s a bunch of boys on the weekend they’re pretty flat because they’re playing roles that they weren’t drafted for or didn’t play as a kid
saying let’s see the silver lining in this.”
With new forwards coach Cam Roberts and a new-look forward line – minus Stringer and the 42 goals he booted last year (he kicked 21 in 2023) – the Bombers want to have a less predictable set up
“I guess it’s a little bit challenging at the moment
It’s super competitive down there,” Langford said
I can see why our recruiting department did what they did
although we’re missing you can say the 40 goals [from Stringer]
I think there’s so many other players who can step up and chip in
“Nate [Caddy] is only going to grow and build on what he did last year
I think as a forward line group it’s really exciting
when you get that belief and camaraderie among the group
and it’s definitely something you see with the younger players
I think there’s no ceiling in what we can do

The battle for spots on Hawthorn’s board has escalated as four-time premiership Hawk Chris Langford warned that not voting for the incumbents would allow agitators to take the club back to “dark places”
Langford is among 50 premiership players and prominent club members to put their name to an open letter to club members asking them to vote for club-backed incumbents Tim Shearer and Ian Silk in the interests of unity and to support the nominations committee and governance structures in place
Premiership captain Don Scott announced last week that he was a candidate for one of two vacancies but did not apply via the club’s nominations committee

who headed up fundraising for the Kennedy Centre at Dingley

“My frustration is that the club is emerging from a very difficult and sad time and experience in my eyes and the eyes of many past players
but it is moving forward and has the right people leading that move forward and there are people who are agitating to take the club back into those dark places and sad chapter,” Langford told this masthead
The letter says the current board and administration has Hawthorn “on the edge of something special” after the team’s electrifying run into the finals in 2024
Scott opted to avoid nominating through the club’s committee
which Langford was on before running for a seat

“People have rung me to ask ‘what is going on?’ My phone has been hot since Friday with people affirming my thoughts

president Andy Gowers hit back at Scott after the club great accused the Hawks of not “passing the pub test” on financial and voting governance
Scott, the two-time premiership captain, had taken to radio to outline his concerns
Scott – who raised questions at last year’s annual general meeting about financial disclosure over a $1.5 million provisional payment
which was listed but without specific details – claimed on Monday that the Hawks had not delivered on being open and transparent under Gowers’ leadership
“Four people were intimidated or persuaded not to stand

Harris and Langford were on the nominations committee before the 2024 election
Gowers disputed Scott’s claims about the lack of detail over the provisional $1.5 million payment
saying it had been put aside for “unknown” future legal issues
He said this same $1.5 million had flowed on to this year’s accounts
which had been used in the settlement last week of the club’s mediated Federal Court racism case with past players and their families
How much of that $1.5 million had been used was not disclosed
Scott was pleased on Monday to note that the purpose of the $1.5 million provisional payment had been addressed with detail in this year’s annual financial records
The Hawks last week announced a football operations surplus of more than $1.1 million for the financial year
coming after a season in which Sam Mitchell’s team vaulted into the finals

Gowers said the Hawks were working towards building a bridge with all former players
coaches and staff impacted by the racism case
some of whom have felt not great about their time
and we are doing everything we can to repair those relationships and let people heal,” he said

The results haven’t been ideal, but they’re not giving up the fight for finals.
That’s the mentality forward Kyle Langford says Essendon has taken with four rounds left in the home and away season.
Not shying away from the reality of three disappointing losses, Langford believes the Bombers can turn their fortunes around.
In a season which has seen constant form swings amongst the competition and an unsettled top eight, the 27-year-old states the hard lessons of recent weeks has galvanised the playing group into aiming to make amends.
“Our performance (against St Kilda) was not AFL level,” Langford told 1116 SEN.
“Although we’ve had a couple of bad performances, we’ve had a tough week on the track, some honest truths, and the reality of it is we have four games left to qualify for finals.
Kyle Langford chats with the SEN crew ahead of his 150th AFL game in round 21.
“We’ve seen teams fall for a month and then pick themselves up and get going again.
“That’s our aim and we are looking forward to going out and making amends this weekend.”
On a personal note, round 21’s clash with Fremantle will see Langford play his 150th AFL game and become a Life Member of Essendon.
Initially taken with pick No.17 in the 2014 AFL National Draft, Langford gradually found his feet in multiple positions throughout the early stages of his career before settling into a key forward role.
Langford’s career skyrocketed after a breakout 2023 where he was an All-Australian Squad member, runner up-in the Crichton Medal and a winner of the Matthew Lloyd Leading Goalkicker Award with 51 majors.
Kyle Langford has taken out the award for the 2023 season.
As he continues to star in 2024 as the Bombers’ leading goalkicker with 37 majors, Essendon’s No.4 wouldn’t change a thing about his journey and feels he’s just getting started.
“It’s a huge honour to have played 150 games of AFL football. I feel like I’m only getting started based off of last year and I’ve got the best footy in front of me,” Langford said.
“What I learnt over that journey has made the player I am today. The midfield time and craft I learned in those three to four years, I’ve put into my forward craft. If I stayed forward, I might not have got there.”

JOINT Larke Medal winner Harvey Langford became the latest AFL Draft prospect to audition at state league level after making his Victorian Football League (VFL) debut for Richmond
The Tigers fan acquitted himself well in the senior grade as his new side locked in a Wildcard Round berth
who has been a dominant force as co-captain of Dandenong Stingrays this year
78 jumper left by fellow top 10 prospect Finn O’Sullivan
Langford had moments of genuine quality in the nine-point win over Carlton
We put the midfielder-forward’s Round 21 performance under the Player Focus microscope
#75 Harvey Langford (Richmond VFL)Stats: 12 disposals (7 kicks
the first quarter proved somewhat of a feeling out process for Langford
though he was thrown straight into the midfield mix off the bench
The 18-year-old showed good anticipation to get a hand in on consecutive Carlton handballs for his first contribution
before being dragged down near the boundary at half-forward
Langford’s main area of improvement is his speed and he took some time to adjust in that sense
with his reactions proving sharp but his movement lacking the same conviction at times
He was a little less imposing than usual at the coalface
but laid a couple of terrific tackles in the centre corridor to show he was willing to compete
Having attended six of nine centre bounces in the opening term
Langford’s first clean possession came on the outside as he took a running bounce along the wing and kicked long inside 50 – only to have the entry intercepted by Vic Country teammate Tobie Travaglia
who was playing his second VFL game for the opposition
after a relatively steady start the youngster began to find his feet and rhythm – especially not being the biggest midfielder out there
He even clunked what would have been a super pack mark at half-back
only for the umpire’s whistle to intervene for an infringement he didn’t make in the contest
Langford really started to get going in the second quarter
which ended up being his most prolific period
Having struggled to keep his feet and collect the ball under physical duress in the early stages
he found some confidence with a terrific ground ball get in the centre before spinning out of congestion and accelerating forward
Langford’s lateral movement was terrific and his spatial awareness bought him extra time in possession
He utilised his big frame to brush off tacklers
while also proving nimble enough to step past them and get out of trouble
as highlighted by a flat inside 50 ball to the hot spot
Having attended 12 of 17 centre bounces in the first half
it was Langford’s turn to show his wares up forward
He is usually renowned for being able to impact aerially and on the scoreboard from deep positions inside 50
but seemed to be encouraged to find the ball further afield without anti-density restrictions
He got into good positions at the drop of the ball and very nearly crumbed for a goal off hands right in front of the big sticks
Langford again took some time to find his touch at the contest
and it was difficult to impact in a marking sense with so many of Richmond’s forward entries finding tall target
His best moment of the third quarter oozed class
as Langford held his own in a one-on-two battle by tapping the bouncing ball over one opponent
and absorbing contact from the other before drilling a kick across forward 50 to Marlion Pickett
The impressive act yielded a huge response from his teammates
Langford was again absent from the centre bounces but did his best to find good positions up forward
He took a strong grab at half-forward and used his only kick of the quarter to set up deep inside 50 to the hot spot
Langford also made another nice intercept off Carlton hands to feed Maurice Rioli through the corridor
showcasing his craft in tight spaces and elite reading of the game
a front-and-centre crumb almost came his way inside 50
Langford faced the tough task of being thrown into the cut of thrust of a state league midfield battle in his maiden appearance
Not being the most physically developed player at each contest was an adjustment
though he made it and was also able to impact on the outside
Langford’s balance of a hard edge and playmaking kicking made for good watching as he launched attacks inside 50
His depth of kicking allowed for meaningful entries and he picked out good options going inboard with flat
While he lacks the out-and-out speed of other midfielders in the crop
the whole experience would have been a whirlwind for Langford
his entire top-age year has been remarkable
It was little surprise to see his name thrown up to be the latest player to be blooded in Richmond’s system
and he has many of the patented Tiger traits
Whether that puts him in line to be a pick one candidate remains to be seen

The eagerly anticipated development of the Langford Sporting Complex is set to begin next month
with demolition work now scheduled to clear the way for the “state-of-the-art” indoor sports centre
partly funded by the City of Gosnells and contributions from the Federal and State governments
got the go-ahead at last week’s council meeting after a contract was awarded to a preferred construction company
As the City’s first indoor multi-sport facility and the new home for the Southern Districts Netball Association (SDNA)
it will feature a show court for netball with a grandstand and three multi-sport courts suitable for netball
The Langford Indoor Sports Centre will also include gender-neutral change rooms
Actively involved with the SDNA and a former coach at the club for eight years at the Langford Sporting Complex
Councillor Glenn Dewhurst spoke of his support for the ongoing development
so it’s absolutely beautiful,” Mr Dewhurst said
it’s going to be absolutely amazing and I thank city staff for all their hard work to get to where we are
and also council for supporting it as well.”
the SDNA will operate from temporary accommodation
is estimated to cost $130,000 and is covered within the project budget
the project’s expenses have increased by over $700,000
but City of Gosnells Chief Executive Officer Ian Cowie said he believes it remains a worthwhile investment for the community
“All tenders received were higher than the pre-tender estimate
which is indicative of the current construction market
The project budget will be managed throughout the construction process,” Mr Cowie said
“The complex will provide a much-needed multi-sport indoor court facility within the city
offering an expanded competitive sports arena for netball
The new community hall will also offer a recreation space for general community use.”
Previous community safety concerns regarding the gender-neutral change rooms have been addressed by the city
with the chief executive clarifying the reasoning behind the design decisions
“The change rooms are referred to as gender-neutral because they do not include urinals
however each entry door has a sign indicating whether it is for male or female use
This is standard across all new public facilities,” Mr Cowie said
Main construction of the new indoor facility is set to commence early in 2025
with completion anticipated towards the end of next year

Tangled up in city planning red tape are the dreams of one multi-generational Langford family
When Jesse Harris purchased two acres of land on Klahanie Drive in south Langford in 2021
he thought he was one step closer to finding a forever home for four generations of his family
“We truly have had this vision since I was a kid,” said Harris
who recalls the idea was first floated at a family meeting when he was around eight years old
“My dad compared the idea to mom's favourite TV show
But just like the fictional Newman family who faced opposition from rival family the Abbotts
Standing in the family’s way of achieving their dream is the City of Langford and its official community plan (OCP)
the OCP is hailed by the city as a document that “sets the direction for future growth” for Langford; but for the Harris family
it could potentially stunt their ambitions
the city put the brakes on Harris’ rezoning application to allow for a subdivision of his two-acre property so he could build a second home
Councillors voted 4-3 to not consider the application "given the official community plan refresh work that is currently underway."
Concern was also raised as Harris’s property is currently on a septic field
His application would have required a 'precedent-setting' variance to bylaws
which state all new subdivisions in Langford have to be hooked up to municipal sewer lines
It could take up to 20 years for Klahanie Drive to be connected to sewer
who also believes there is already a precedent for new single-family home developments using septic
“I live in one – a detached duplex on septic," said Harris about his home on Jenkins Avenue
which he hopes to sell one day if his family's ambitions are realized
Harris was told he could reapply with the same application once the OCP refresh has been completed
But when the city released the draft version of its refreshed OCP in March
Harris found nothing had changed – the plan says
“Subdivision and development must be connected to community sewer and water services.”
“This makes absolutely no sense,” said Harris
“I'm not going to go back with the same application because nothing in the OCP really changed from before – [the land] is still a ‘neighbourhood’
Harris now suspects the council was “kicking the can down the road” in September
“By pushing [my application] into the future
they can say they are going by the new OCP versus the old one,” he said
While waiting for news about the refreshed OCP
Harris has pursued other avenues for his application
including receiving advice from council staff
The city’s director of development services advised Harris he could apply for rezoning to allow for a detached duplex
while also asking the council to give his property the same consideration as the previous council gave his Jenkins home in 2010
which would allow him to develop Klahanie without sanitary sewers
A suggestion Harris took full advantage of
submitting a second application in November
he received a letter from chief administrative officer Darren Kiedyk
telling him the application for a detached duplex would not be considered by council as his first attempt has already been denied
“ … it would be inappropriate for staff to accept any similar applications for council to consider until the official community plan refresh work has been completed,” wrote Kiedyk in a letter shared with Goldstream Gazette
Harris says further attempts made by him to communicate with city staff have been stonewalled
"No one will talk to me," he said. "No one will return emails
They have frozen me out ... I'm in this limbo land."
a City of Langford spokesperson said the decision made by council in September 2024 “has not changed.”
Despite the many setbacks and the rising costs incurred
which Harris estimates have already reached around $30,000
the family intends to continue navigating the planning process in the hope they can find a solution
“I plan to continue with the application for the detached duplex as soon as they unfreeze my ability to do so,” said Harris
being together as a family is more important than the money
“I don't want to pay these application fees
if this is something that I truly want to do.”

Dandenong co-captain Cooper Hynes is confident in what he would be able to provide an AFL club after a scintillating 2024 at talent pathways level
The explosive forward-midfielder averaged 24 disposals and kicked 23 goals from his 15 games for the Stingrays
to go with a solid National Championships campaign for Vic Country
clearance-winning player with the capacity to take marks inside 50
Hynes has at least three clubs interested in the first round of the AFL National Draft on 20 November
“I feel like I’m someone who’s super competitive
and I will come in and try to learn off the senior players and build connections with the players and staff and be good to have around the club,” the teenager said when asked what he’d offer an AFL club
I’m a fierce competitor and someone that can bring my strengths to the game and be confident in my own ability as well.”
Hynes played alongside now AFL-listed trio Harry DeMattia
and also has a relationship with West Coast’s Harvey Johnston
It has given the Rowville Sports Academy student an insight of life on AFL list
“Lots of their advice is about connecting with people at the club,” he said
“It’s your full time job and you’re going to see these people every day so building connections is a big thing to hold you in good stead.”
Hynes’ stocks have improved as the season has worn on
with his consistency both within games and across the course of the season going some way to answering question marks critics had over his conditioning
At his exit meeting with ‘Rays coach Nick Cox last year
he’d had the best preseason of his life and had professionalised his diet and recovery
which laid the foundation for increased time in the midfield
“I was super confident in how I would perform because I worked hard on what I needed to improve on and I was as fit as I’d ever been and strong as I’d ever been,” Hynes said
“I had no doubts I would be able to show myself at a high level and put my best foot forward from round 1
“I think it comes from preseason and that big block of hard work – if I have a quiet patch
I have the ability to get myself back in games so it’s definitely a mindset thing
“I have the belief I can impact from anywhere helps me with my consistency
“I’ve loved it – a goal for me was to move into the midfield more and more
I’ve only been there for a couple of years so every game I play I feel like I’m getting better in that area and my fitness has been really good this year so I’m happy with how I’ve run out games.”
The 190cm talent was a match-winner when unleashed in the midfield
accelerating from traffic and brushing off tackles with ease and is hard to stop one-on-one inside 50
knowing when to use it is a part of his game that he has seen improvement in this year
you’ll know situations where you use your power and other situations where you can give first option so getting that balance right between taking on the tackler and giving it off is something I’ve improved,” Hynes noted
“Getting my hands on the footy is a big one
you can show what you can do and the decisions you make and being powerful and bursting out of stoppage as well has been one of the big goals.”
Playing predominantly inside 50 for Vic Country
kicking some trademark goals from stoppage and setting up teammates
where he co-skippered them to the preliminary final
Another piece of feedback given during his exit meeting last year was to develop his leadership
so standing up when his team needed it and communicating well with teammates was a big tick
He’s captained alongside potential top-five selection Harvey Langford
with whom he shares a close bond off the field and plays a similar role to on-field
Addressing the media at the AFL National Combine in October
Langford leapt at the opportunity to heap praise on his teammate
Hynes indicated their relationship has been mutually beneficial as they have navigated the stresses of their top-aged year in 2024
“We compete really hard against each other at training and always want to be better than each other,” Hynes said
“We drive high standards with each other and have a good relationship on-field as well from training together
“We’re able to find each other a fair bit which is handy
“We’re super close mates and staying in touch especially in the next month
it will be important to have people you can talk to that are on the same path.”
The AFL National Draft will be held on 20-21 November
before the rookie and preseason drafts the following day.
