Skye United and Aspendale will fly the flag for local soccer in the next round of the 2025 Australia Cup And they could be joined by Somerville Eagles who were due to play their Cup tie with North Caulfield last night (Monday).Third-round preliminary ties in the national knockout competition are scheduled for a fortnight’s time a week before the start of the State League season Langwarrin enters the Cup after the third preliminary round.A young Mornington squad backed up by senior players James Clark Jack McDonald and Halil Reki overcame the challenge of Rosebud 2-0 at Olympic Park last weekend Rosebud and Mornington both had good chances to score in a game that was played at a furious pace in front of a huge crowd It wasn’t until the 31st minute that the deadlock was broken when a corner for Mornington wasn’t cleared and the ball fell to Dylan Thomas who made no mistake from point-blank range. The second half started poorly for the hosts when Jack Wyer was wrongly penalised for a handball in the first minute and Rosebud failed to track a near post run from Thomas who grabbed his second.Rosebud remained a threat throughout with Connor Wharton hitting the side netting Mark O’Connor missing a great chance from a few metres out and Alfie Harris drawing a fine save from Guido Guerrieri.Skye United scraped past stubborn State 5 outfit Burwood City 1-0 at Burwood East Reserve on Saturday In the 11th minute Ali Hazarah ran onto a ball played over the top of the home team’s defence before squaring for Elliott Craig to nab the winner Skye was relatively untroubled throughout but with five minutes to go goalkeeper Steven Hadjikakou was sent off for a dubious handball outside the box and Daniel Attard pulled on the gloves for the final minutes of the contest.Aspendale prevailed in a goalfest at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Saturday downing Melton Phoenix 4-3 Zenoozi was twice relegated to the role of spectator by two stunning Montagnese strikes – one in each half – that proved decisive. The first came in the 34th minute when Montagnese let fly from outside the box and sent the ball rocketing into the top far corner giving Zenoozi no chance But the best was yet to come and it was well worth the wait In the 77th minute from just a few metres inside the attacking half Montagnese hammered the ball over Zenoozi who quickly backpedalled and threw himself at it in vain as it flew over his head and struck the net at pace It was a goal that could have graced any stage of the world game such was its quality. For periods of this hard-fought contest Strikers gave as good as they got but their downfall was up front where Banyule keeper Jordan Gifkins was rarely tested leaving Strikers fans to lament the unavailability of lightning-quick winger Campbell Steedman And the fact that it took two spectacular strikes to down Strikers highlighted the outstanding display of central defender Steve Elliott who was a colossus at the back Brunswick thought it had taken the lead from a Billy Tsiamis free-kick in the 26th minute only for Charlie Fry to head off the line Three minutes from the break Langwarrin winger Cooper Legrand sent Cal Goulding clear on the left of the area and his cutback found his brother Luke whose firm strike cannoned off the crossbar The deadlock was broken five minutes into the second half A Legrand cross wasn’t properly cleared and Brad Blumenthal’s shot fell to Cal Goulding who hammered the ball home from near the penalty spot Dylan Mcglade was felled inside the area and converted the resultant penalty.Brunswick would have gone ahead in the 66th minute but for an outstanding reflex save from James Burgess but it didn’t have to wait long for the go-ahead goal In the 76th minute the irrepressible Dylan Allshorn and Carl Jonsson’s quick one-two saw Allshorn skip clear on the right before squaring the ball to Jonsson for a tap-in It came in the form of substitute Tom Youngs who entered the fray in the 72nd minute and immediately sparked Langwarrin’s attack into life A few minutes from time Youngs was brought down inside the box and a penalty awarded Youngs took the conversion attempt but Brunswick keeper Nicholas Mooney palmed the ball onto a post and watched it bounce back across goal before being cleared The result leaves the local outfit languishing near the foot of the table with just one point from four matches and facing a run of five straight away fixtures.Yet head coach Jamie Skelly remains upbeat “We outplayed Brunswick for long periods but we know that this is such a good league with good teams that if you don’t take your chances then there is the opportunity of being punished at the other end,” Skelly said “This was back to a true Langy team playing with the grit and heart that I think everyone at the club values “We are still positive and together as a group and our results will change.”Australia Cup preliminary round 2 results:Mentone 1 the four-bedroom house in leafy Langwarrin in Melbourne’s outer southeast looks like any other But what lies beneath the walls of the red brick exterior could cause the property to sell for much less than others in the suburb The red brick walls of this suburban house conceal a "blank canvas" ready for rejuvination The house is listed for sale with a $475,000 to $525,000 price guide which is significantly lower than the suburb’s $850,000 median sale price That’s because the house has been completely gutted What’s left is an empty shell, which selling agent Adrian Foster described as “the blankest canvas you can have.” The listing describes the property as "professionally gutted" with only the framing and insulation remaining He said the mortgagee-in-possession property was being sold without an interior fit-out because the home was previously in such a bad way due to years of neglect “I think possums had gone through the roof and made a mess inside.” but the floorplan could be reconfigured to suit the buyer's taste Selling the “professionally gutted” property as a shell rather than reinstating the walls would appeal to more buyers many of whom would likely want to make changes to the layout “It was just easier to rip it all out,” he said “It’s a good floor plan but you could change the floorplan easily if you wanted to.” it's easy to see how spacious the home is Mr Foster said the property seemed “pretty solid” but said structural engineers had not been engaged to inspect the property and stressed that potential buyers should arrange their own inspections The house would likely be worth between $850,000 to $900,000 once fully renovated adding that enterprising DIYers with the right skills and know-how would likely be able to handle a lot of the hard work to cut down on costs The property includes a tidy backyard which backs onto a nature reserve “If you're an apprentice who knows how to hang plaster “You could change a few walls around and do whatever competition It’s been almost 15 years since these teams met in a league game at Lawton Park and the locals will be hoping for a different outcome to the 1-0 loss suffered on 4 July 2009 Langy head coach Jamie Skelly is under no illusions about the task ahead against an NPL heavyweight still smarting from last season’s relegation “It’s probably as tough an assignment as we could have got for round one but I think we are ready,” Skelly said well organised and they have some very good players “Their aim is promotion and I know that’s been vocalised by a lot of people within that club so they’ve got expectations and they’ve got pressure to do that.” It’s a different Langwarrin under Skelly who filled the vacancy created by Scott Miller’s departure at the end of last season no rash claims of promotion possibilities or public pronouncements about a readiness to step up to the highest level of club competition in Victoria “We haven’t talked about goals or expectations because you can become hamstrung by them and you end up only focussing on that,” he said “We know when we play at our best we can be really competitive against anyone “I know it’s a cliché but we’re just about looking at that next fixture not focussing on where we’re going to end up.” Eight players have left Langy’s senior squad during the off-season and eight newcomers have arrived with three youngsters from last season’s under-21s promoted to the senior squad The players that have left are Tristan Meaker Vega proved to be a very creative player who enhanced the team’s attacking capability but Skelly is confident that they have dealt with his loss “Joe O’Brien from Mandurah City has come in and strengthened our attacking options and Dante Avian has come in from Brunswick City so if you’re thinking like for like then he’s probably the most similar to Josh in that he’s technically very good he likes running at players and he can score goals as well “And Rahul (Suresh) is a late arrival who gives us another option up there so we have a lot of attacking options.” Brothers Rahul and Barath Suresh agreed terms last week Rahul is a 19-year-old winger and Barath is a 20-year-old midfielder and both are full Sri Lankan internationals They joined Langy from German club Niendorfer TSV Another attacking option is James Kelly who has had a horror run with recurring soft-tissue injuries Kelly may be Langwarrin’s best player but getting him onto the pitch regularly has been a problem in recent seasons “It’s difficult for me and it’s difficult for James to manage,” Skelly said “He’s such a good player and he’s important to us but you have to risk putting him out there at times and it’s about managing that risk as best you can “We’d love to have him out there for 90 minutes each week but that’s not going to happen “We know that and he knows that so we have to pick and choose the games he can start and when he’s better coming off the bench while managing his training load as well.” When Skelly took over last September he quickly identified a need to improve defensively with last season’s side conceding the highest number of goals since the club entered the NPL in 2018 So there’s been a deliberate focus on the team’s defensive structure throughout the off-season with promising signs judging by last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Dandenong Thunder at George Andrews Reserve “We’ve worked hard defensively and set ourselves up to be very hard to break down “Our recruitment and the way we’ve worked has been based on the style we want to play “We can make alterations to that if we need to but we’re pretty clear on the structures we want to play within “We’ve worked very hard on our system and we’ve made sure that our personnel fit into that system “We want to continue to build and to improve and over the season you generally end up where you deserve to end up “If we can play as best we can and consistently then let’s see where that takes us.” Here is Skelly’s 2024 senior squad with the previous club of newcomers in brackets: GOALKEEPERS: Griffin Bambach (Sunshine Coast Wanderers) MIDFIELDERS: Barath Suresh (Niendorfer TSV) In State 1 news Mornington has signed Rhys Craigie and Kostas Droutsas It’s Craigie’s second stint with the Seagulls In his native Scotland the midfielder played with Hearts Beaumaris was his first Australian club and he joined Mornington in February 2022 During the current off-season he switched to Malvern City but when the chance came to get back to Dallas Brooks Park he jumped at it “I’m just happy to be back and see so many familiar faces and I’m really buzzing to get into pre-season again,” Craigie said “I think this is the year we go all the way because ‘Jamo’ has assembled an unreal squad.” Droutsas joins Mornington from Dandenong City The former Bentleigh Greens and Eastern Lions player is likely to be used in a front three or as an attacking midfielder He had been training with Bentleigh Greens during the off-season willing to forgive a group of young men who caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to their place of worship The group of intruders was caught on security camera breaking into the mosque in Melbourne’s south-east early on Sunday morning and tore up a badminton court and book displays They also found some bikes in a store room and rode them around the prayer area then had an apparent running race in that same spot told Channel Nine that he and his family live downstairs at the facility He said he was woken up to the sounds of the vandalism calling police before attempting to scare the group off “The praying area is a place where you don’t even wear your shoes - that was really painful,” Janud told Channel Nine after viewing the video “The first thing I could find was a hockey stick so I came out and banged it on the fence a couple of times Victoria Police said the group ran away before police arrived Roving patrols and a search of the area failed to find those involved Frankston Crime Investigation Unit detectives searched the site for forensic clues on Sunday and police said they have received information regarding the incident They appealed for the young men involved to come forward and own up Thousands of worshippers who visit the mosque will be upset about the crime Janud and Ahmadiyya Muslim Association president Osama Ahmed both told Nine the community would welcome the young men if they wanted to learn about the venue they had damaged “Most of the members of our community escaped persecution in other parts of the world and they moved here so they could live their life peacefully and worship the faith they want to worship,” Janud said “I will be more than happy to show them around and answer any questions they may have.” Victoria Police 23-year-old has been signed from current Singapore Premier League champion Albirex Niigata Takahashi and his Niigata teammates denied ex-Langwarrin and Socceroo star Bailey Wright from celebrating a league title in his first season in Singapore as Wright’s club Lion City Sailors finished runner-up Playing primarily at right back Takahashi made 19 appearances for Albirex Niigata last season scoring three goals and being credited with assists for two others He became a free agent on 1 January and recently concluded successful negotiations with Langy businessman and major sponsor Greg Kilner Takahashi arrived over a week ago and after two training sessions played in last weekend’s hitout against Goulburn Valley Suns in Shepparton He is from Tokyo and was promoted to FC Tokyo’s J1 League senior squad in 2018 He also played for Tokyo University before signing a one-year deal with Niigata last January Takahashi is expected to play in midfield for Langwarrin “Initial contact with Ryo wasn’t through Bailey but once we heard about him we obviously went through Bailey when we did our background check,” Langwarrin head coach Jamie Skelly said NPL rules allow a club to have up to four visa players as long as at least one is from the Asian Football Confederation Adding Takahashi to that list potentially presents Skelly with a tough decision if Macphee’s application for permanent residency isn’t granted before Tuesday 6 February That’s the deadline set by Football Victoria for lodgement of final squads for this season’s renamed VPL1 competition Skelly wants to keep all five players but that’s in the hands of Immigration “We’re also potentially bringing in one or two more but we’re very close now to finalising the squad,” Skelly added “It would only happen if the name of someone significant came up who would improve the squad.” Skelly also has signed 19-year-old winger Dante Avian from Brunswick City Avian is a product of Melbourne City’s academy Takahashi and Avian’s first outing as Langwarrin players went well with the visitors to John McEwen Reserve in Shepparton running out impressive 3-1 victors on Saturday Youngs and Allen Dzemidzic scored for Langwarrin However last week wasn’t all about signings as Langy said farewell to defender Jaiden Madafferi A number of tributes to the defender were posted on social media when news broke that he had chosen to step away from the sport “I’m just not feeling it at the moment and I’ve decided to take some time off “I want people to know that just in case the stories get mixed up.” Meanwhile this Saturday the focus of the local game switches to Lawton Park and the 11th official staging of the annual Steve Wallace Cup The event commemorates the life of local soccer icon Stephen William Wallace who was 54 years old when he died on 19 July 2011 and was a former Langwarrin player club council representative and Bayside League referee COVID-19 rules impacted on the event in 2022 and forced a series of one-off 90-minute games so no winner was declared but the tournament returned to a more familiar format last year with the host club winning the trophy for the third time However Langwarrin 0 Monash Villareal 5 Skye head coach Phil McGuinness offered a blunt assessment of his team’s 8-1 mauling: “We had a team full of trialists and they battered us for 90 minutes.” At Olympic Park on Friday evening State 4 side Somerville proved too strong for its State 5 host The match was played in three 30-minute periods due to the heat The first period found both teams moving the ball around well showing an eagerness to play out from the back Marcus Anastasiou broke the deadlock when a Conor Mcfall diagonal found him one-on-one with Rosebud keeper Colin McCormack and despite being on a tight angle Somerville’s top scorer made no mistake with a low strike to make it 1-0 Within minutes of the kick-off to the second period Somerville went further ahead after an inswinging Mcfall corner found an unmarked Jake Meggs who volleyed his attempt past McCormack In the final period Anastasiou grabbed his second when he got on the end of a brilliant pass from Tom Simmons and lobbed McCormack to make it 3-0 Minutes later a tiring Rosebud failed to deal with Somerville’s press and a cheap turnover proved costly when Mcfall beat an opponent then smashed the ball home from the edge of the area to make it 4-0 Rosebud refused to give in and created a series of great chances only to be denied by Somerville custodian Nick Bucello The ’Buds kept at it and were rewarded late in the contest brought in 13 players from other clubs during the off-season in a major squad makeover that the local club hopes will deliver a successful campaign “Pre-season’s been really enjoyable and the characters we’ve brought in have had a really positive effect on the group,” Miller said “I sat down last week and looked at the league and seven of those clubs have been in NPL1 while two are A-League clubs “Compare that to Langwarrin who have really only had three NPL seasons when you take the pandemic into account and it puts things into perspective.” But despite being a comparative NPL newcomer Langwarrin goes into Saturday’s clash as a firm favourite It’s important that it gets a good result against Kingston as Langy had a stuttering start to last season having to wait until round 9 for its first win and after Saturday’s season opener it faces the next five games away while roadworks on Barrett’s Road are completed and the grass on the main pitch is resown “We all know Kingston’s system and how they play and I expect them to be more structured defensively after their coaching restructure but we’re all looking forward to this,” Miller added Here is Langwarrin’s senior squad with the previous club of new players in brackets: Thomas Podaridis (Springvale White Eagles) In the Langwarrin under-21s Ben Caffrey and assistant Adam Poole are aiming for another top four finish after sampling finals football in 2022 “Having kept the majority of players from last season we have set goals as a team to go further than the semi-finals last year,” Caffrey said Pooley and I with the help of Sean (Skelly) are also looking to continue the players’ development towards the seniors having seen two promoted this year already.” Mentone and Baxter advanced to the second minutes into the second half Mount Martha was awarded a penalty Davey Jones took it by scuffing his shot and gifting a simple save to Tullamarine keeper Nicholas Abougelis When it came to the penalties showdown Abougelis played a pivotal role He was quick to offer advice to Mount Martha penalty takes especially after they missed then decided to take a penalty himself sending his attempt decisive spot-kick On Sunday Baxter thumped Glen Eira 7-1 at Baxter Park Within a minute the visitors stunned the home side when Max Perek put them in front but a powerful Brodie Jones header following a corner in the 10th minute and a superb Dylan Murchie free kick in the 24th minute gave the home side a lead it never relinquished In the second half Baxter’s new captain Aleksandar Dukic Manningham United Blues in their NPL2 clash at Lawton Park on Saturday The home team had just gone 2-0 up in the first half when left back Jaiden Madafferi was sent off in controversial circumstances Langy was in rampant mood early on and within three minutes Tom Youngs had sent Sammy Orritt clear on the left Orritt’s composed finish gave advancing Manningham keeper Stefan Taleski no chance Straight from the restart Langy keeper Fraser Maclaren was forced to spread himself and block Franc Carafa’s attempt with a leg Damir Stoilovic broke on the left in the 28th minute and his low firmly hit cross to the far post would have set up Orritt but Manningham left back Dylan Bresolin got there first only to turn the ball into his own net At this stage it looked as if Langy could run away with the contest but before the restart Madafferi had got in the face of an opponent who claimed he was punched Referee Aleksandar Liber consulted with his young assistants then sent off Madafferi to the bemused reaction of many spectators and the shared bewilderment of the player and the Langwarrin bench This changed the direction of the contest especially in the second half but Manningham hadn’t counted on a disciplined and concerted effort by every Langy player to pressure the ball and close down opponents particularly inside Langy’s defensive half Manningham’s only effective response came finished well to put Seaford ahead but a controversial equaliser in the 37th minute was the contest’s main talking point Seaford coach Peter Schwellinger claims that the visitor’s linesman (no official linesmen were supplied) was well behind play when a cross bounced on top of the Seaford crossbar and was headed on the rebound by Endeavour’s Maqsod Mansuri “Their linesman was well behind the play and signalled for a goal even though the ball did not even touch the line with two of our defenders and our keeper behind the ball yet the referee awarded a goal,” Schwellinger said Endeavour had the better of the second half but couldn’t grab the winner Seaford was without Tom Hogan due to a groin injury and Adam Martin and Waugh had to come off in the second half Tristan Stass was back
