competition this past weekend North and West Footscray faced off at Hansen Reserve and it was the home team who claimed local bragging rights as they registered their second win of the campaign with a 44-point victory The Devils setup the result on the back of a 10-goal to three opening half as they took a 49-point lead into the main break West Footscray hit back in the second half kicking nine goals to North Footscray’s eight but it was never going to be enough for the Roosters to overcome their slow start with the final score 18.12 (120) to 12.4 (76) Forwards starred for both teams with Matthew Serafin brilliant for North Footscray with seven goals while Matthew Turcinovich kicked four majors for his side Braybrook hosted top of the table Albanvale and despite the Brookers getting off to their best start of the season the Cobras continued their unbeaten start to 2025 Braybrook led by the 12 points at quarter time in part to some poor goal kicking from Albanvale the visitors corrected that in the second adding 4.1 while the home side suffered their own yips in front of the big sticks kicking 0.5 The Cobras then extended an eight-point halftime advantage to 12 points at three-quarter time before triumphing 10.15 (75) to 7.11 (53) Ostinn Bellingham was awarded the Anzac Day Medal for Albanvale while Matthew Condo received the same honour for Braybrook At Laverton Park it was the hosts collecting their first four points of the season with a big win over Tarneit Shaydon Blomfield and Alex Grigg each bagged five goals while Campbell Waddell contributed four as the Magpies ran out 23.122 (150) to 6.8 (44) winners Caleb Sciberras was the top performer for the Titans while Samuel Roberts finished with three majors Wyndhamvale again proved too strong for their competition downing Sunshine Heights The Falcons stormed out of the blocks with eight first-quarter goals helping the visitors establish a 38-point lead at the first change and from there it was smooth sailing for the premiership favourites The Dragons finished the better of the two sides kicking three fourth quarter goals to win the final term but it mattered little as the Falcons recorded their third straight win Recruit Brock Jones was best on ground for Wyndhamvale with another new addition Lewis Stanton kicked six majors for the second time this season Sunshine Heights was best served by Elliot Rosado while Ash Neal made a strong return kicking three goals in his first outing of the year At Goddard Street Reserve the home side Suns trumped Western Rams 21.8 (134) to 10.8 (68) in a match that was much closer for periods then the final score suggests The visitors started well to hold a slender three-point lead at the first change but inspired by the play of Michael Ryan the Suns took control with eight goals to one in the second term Joshua Cassar and Tyler Lewis helped the Rams cut the deficit to 15 points at the end of three quarters before the Suns dominated the last adding another eight goals with the Rams going scoreless The hosts finished with six multiple goal kickers with Blake Jago and Peter Tomelty the best of them the pair both booting four majors on outbreak that has killed two Victorians and spread to almost 90 cases said tests had revealed a Laverton North cooling tower was likely behind the 78 confirmed and 10 suspected cases of the disease the state’s worst outbreak in more than two decades “I can confirm that one of the towers we’ve tested and which was subsequently disinfected early in our investigation has returned a positive Legionella sample,” Looker said “This gives us increased confidence that we have identified and already treated the source of this outbreak.” This latest outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease is the most significant since one at the Melbourne Aquarium in 2000 led to 150 people falling sick and four people dying Looker refused to identify the exact location of the Laverton North cooling tower because the investigation was still active She said the cooling tower had a good history of compliance with testing and audit requirements and had a risk-management plan in place Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Clare Looker.Credit: AAP we’ll maintain an open mind as to whether there might have been a breakdown in process but I think until we have further details around that it’s probably tricky to speculate on what the next steps would need to be.” The Department of Health is working closely with the operator of the cooling tower to understand what might have happened to allow the Legionella to grow Looker said most cases continued to be adults aged over 40 About 75 of the confirmed cases and eight of the suspected cases had been hospitalised “I’m confident that we have now passed the peak of the cases associated with this outbreak,” she said Legionnaires’ disease usually presents as a chest infection It is spread by breathing in fine droplets of water that contain Legionella bacteria It is not commonly spread from person to person or by drinking contaminated water most cases have been in people who are normally at greater risk of the infection but there have also been cases in otherwise healthy adults Looker said the cooling tower was visited early in the Health Department’s investigation — on July 30 — and disinfected within 24 hours of that visit Inspection teams have now visited and tested 54 high-priority sites in the area and had disinfection requested “The team has again been on site today at the tower where this positive sample was identified,” Looker told reporters on Monday “They’re conducting further investigations and a further precautionary disinfection.” Cooling towers are structures used to remove excess heat from a building or industrial process by cooling a water stream to a lower temperature industrial facilities and heating ventilation and air-conditioning systems Authorities believe Melbourne’s chilly weather this season fuelled the spread of the disease by creating patterns of thermal inversion which causes air to spread further at lower levels A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman confirmed the agency had provided weather information to the Health Department to assist with its investigation into the outbreak an infectious diseases physician at the Australian National University warned case numbers could continue to rise due to the disease’s incubation period “Once the infected towers have been cleaned we shouldn’t expect to see any new cases,” he said Senanayake said the Legionella bacteria could thrive in warm water in cooling towers which is why they were regularly monitored Looker said that as the cause of the Legionnaires’ outbreak was yet to be identified it was difficult to say what remediation steps would be necessary “We do have very robust management of cooling towers,” she said “As well as looking at this site specifically any improvements we can make to the current system.” The Morning Ltd has kicked off its 2025 production program with ore haulage underway from the Laverton Hub in Western Australia in preparation for the first gold pour expected in March Ore is being hauled to Genesis Minerals Ltd’s Laverton mill as part of an Ore Purchase Agreement (OPA) with Genesis allowing Brightstar to sell up to 500,000 tonnes of ore over 2025 and the first quarter of 2026 Existing ore stockpiles containing around 9,000 ounces of gold are available for haulage and processing with all associated mining costs already sunk The first processing campaign and gold pour is scheduled for March 2025 Cash flow generated from the OPA will provide a platform for significant growth with aggressive exploration plans in parallel with the anticipated release of Brightstar’s definitive feasibility study (DFS) on the wider Laverton-Menzies development including refurbishment of the 100%-owned processing plant in Laverton Brightstar’s managing director Alex Rovira said: “The commencement of haulage to Mt Morgans is a major milestone for Brightstar following months of mine development We are now well positioned to see a return on this time and capital invested particularly at a time of record AUD gold prices.” Brightstar’s CY25 Laverton production strategy The start of haulage to the Laverton Mill realises a key final step in Brightstar executing on its accelerated CY25 Laverton production strategy The company remains debt-free and hedge-free with full exposure to the record AUD gold price ore for the OPA will be sourced from the operating Second Fortune underground mine which has a JORC resource of 165,000 tonnes at 10.9 g/t for 58,000 ounces Ore being loaded at the Second Fortune ROM Brightstar’s historic production at Second Fortune has averaged 10,000 tonnes per month at a reconciled mined grade of 3.6 g/t gold for 12,000 to 15,000 ounces per annum Ore will also be sourced from the Fish Underground Project This is subject to final regulatory approvals Fish has a JORC resource estimate of 225,000 tonnes at 5.7 g/t for 41,000 ounces and a March 2024 scoping study outlined 188,000 tonnes at 4.4 g/t for 26,000 ounces in the indicated classification to be mined over 13 months Ore is expected to be accessed within six weeks of cutting the underground portal and therefore the project is expected to have relatively low peak funding requirements due to early cash flow via the OPA "The introduction of a second underground mine at the Jasper Hills Gold Project will add additional high-grade ore into our production profile and diversify the company’s production across the Laverton Hub,” Rovira said "We look forward to working with all stakeholders in the Laverton district to deliver a step change in Brightstar’s production profile.” including haul road maintenance and preparation and early works for camp and site establishment for which all approvals are in place Key capital works related to site establishment to facilitate mining at Fish is expected to deliver material synergies to future potential development of the Lord Byron open pit operation currently subject of the company’s Laverton-Menzies DFS "Contemporaneous with the gold production from our Laverton Hub via the OPA DFS work continues apace on Brightstar’s Menzies and Laverton assets that will position Brightstar to become a multi-asset gold producer across multiple mines and locations,” Rovira said our geology team is focused on the +55,000-metre extensional and infill drilling program at the Sandstone Gold Project striving to rapidly grow and improve the and I was thoroughly impressed with what I saw Council worked collaboratively with operators BlueFit Group on the upgrades over the last 12 months turning the centre into a facility the community can enjoy again It’s great to see the work that has been done to bring the centre back up to scratch the pool deck has been revitalised and the new gym setup is among plenty of other improvements The facility will be high quality for all users to enjoy Parts of the community have toured the site now too I can’t wait to see it open for use for the whole community in the coming weeks The Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre has been a valued asset for the community for many years Constructed off the back of funds raised by the Laverton community in the 1960s and 70s it has been a special place for many generations of Laverton and Hobsons Bay residents The centre is a physical reminder of some of the amazing things that can be achieved when the community comes together the Laverton community and beyond will be well served by the new and improved site The centre is also a hub for some great community groups The Rainbow Club is a key group that provides swimming instruction for children with disabilities while the Mandarin Swim Squad provides training sessions in both Mandarin and English Both groups provide an inclusive and supportive environment for the community to engage in their high-quality services The new centre is sure to make a splash with the Laverton and wider Hobsons Bay community Evoro is investing $17 million into upgrading its Laverton North liquid and hazardous waste management facility The project follows a thorough planning and approvals process that spanned five years The upgrade will enhance Evoro’s ability to provide a wide range of liquid and hazardous waste management services including the neutralisation of acids and alkaline materials wastewater processing for safe stormwater discharge and safely disposing of or reusing hard-to-treat liquids  Upgraded weighbridges and improved truck unloading processes are also part of the project which will enhance the customer experience emphasised that the investment will integrate leading global technology and practices into the facility’s operations “This is a sweeping site overhaul enabling us to modernise operations to world-class standard,” McBurney said “Our clients from multiple industrial sectors will reap the benefits of better efficiency Much of what we’re doing is a response to client feedback and in line with strict regulatory requirements.” highlighted the environmental impact of the upgrade “Our forte at Laverton North is handling difficult-to-treat industrial waste giving it a second life through recycling or preparing it for safe disposal,” Barnes explained “It’s a responsibility we conduct with professionalism and pride knowing that such products could cause havoc if they were misused or illegally dumped The upgrade is also set to increase the site’s treatment capacity which currently handles up to 60 million litres per year Full-time employment at the facility is expected to grow from 34 to 40 workers has been selected to carry out the works
