This four-bedroom Leopold home sold recently for $700,000
THE size of Leopold is about 26.9sqkm and has 32 parks covering nearly 3.5 per cent of total area
The population of Leopold in 2016 was 12,810 and by the 2021 Census the population was recorded at 13,272 showing a population growth of 4 per cent in the area during that time
Market activity in Leopold has remained strong with well over 400 home sales in the last two years as young families and retirees flock to this very convenient suburb
This is also reflected in the median age for Leopold
which has continued its downward trend and now sits at 41 years of age
it was renamed Leopold in 1892 to avoid confusion with the Melbourne suburb of Kensington
526 hectares of land was subdivided and offered for sale as the “Princely Domain of Kensington”
While the subdivision did not create a village
it provided a name and settlers depended on the Anglican church and school in Hays Road
By 1865 Kensington also had the short-lived Bellarine Hotel and a community of 300 persons
Leopold continued as a rural community until the 1960s
when industrial development at Moolap and Point Henry made Leopold a convenient dormitory suburb
CoreLogic data indicates that the predominant age group in Leopold is 0-9 years with households in Leopold being primarily couples with children and are likely to be repaying $1,603 per month on mortgage repayments
people in Leopold work in a trades occupation
The suburb name comes from Prince Leopold; Queen Victoria’s son and the Duke of Albany
Million dollar plans to introduce a new service station franchise along the Bellarine Highway by getting rid of an existing service station have been lodged to Geelong council
with police increasingly concerned for their wellbeing
Leopold locals are alarmed by a mysterious renovation in their quiet court
which they fear could be creating a rooming house that would cause parking chaos and noise
A Bellarine teenager armed with a screwdriver made off with $20 in a “negotiated settlement” after an unfazed milk bar worker refused his initial demands and questioned why she should hand over anything

The 2.02ha resort-style property at 1051 Bellarine Highway, Leopold
CoreLogic records show they paid $3.85m for the four-bedroom house with a home theatre
“They actually fell in love with the garage more than anything
“If you want a shed like that then you realise you’ve got to pay a premium for it and they were at a point where they had always lived in an older style home on property and they wanted to treat themselves
“What better treat than something like that where you can just move straight into and not have to worry about anything?”
He said the novelty of the home’s VB-themed man cave attracted a lot of inquiry but the eventual buyers were the only serious party that qualified for an inspection
The property has garaging for 20 cars all up
The main living zone links to a covered deck with a built-in barbecue
The purpose-built home theatre recreates the cinema experience
Their extended family is also set to be a big beneficiary of the fun-filled back yard that includes a kids’ playground and in-ground trampoline
“They want to cater for family to come and stay
because it’s such an entertaining house they have got a responsibility to their family to just stay the night and enjoy the property for what it is,” he said
“They have got room to put caravans or tents.”
The three-year-old house displays contemporary finishes such as polished concrete floors and a suite of high-end kitchen appliances
it’s designed around a central outdoor entertainment area
which is accessible from the vast open-plan living area and three of the four bedrooms
The man cave is located in the stand-alone shed
and has servery windows onto the pool deck
its own bathroom and room for a billiard table to perfectly replicate those pub vibes

James Joyce had a terrible time with his eyes. When he was six years old he received his first set of eyeglasses, and, when he was 25, he came down with his first case of iritis
a very painful and potentially blinding inflammation of the colored part of the eye
he named his newborn daughter “Lucia,” after the patron saint of those with eye troubles
Joyce had to endure a horrific series of operations and treatments for one or the other of his eyes
including the removal of parts of the iris
the application of leeches directly on the eye to remove fluid–even the removal of all of Joyce’s teeth
on the theory that his recurring iritis was connected with the bacterial infection in his teeth
brought on by years of poverty and dental neglect
After his seventh eye operation on December 5, 1925, according to Gordon Bowker in James Joyce: A New Biography
suffering continual pain from the operation
He was now dependent on kind people to see him across the road and hail taxis for him
he lay on a couch in a state of complete depression
wanting to work but quite unable to do so.”
NOTE: Joyce’s drawing of Bloom is now in the Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections at Northwestern University. Nutting was a significant source for the biography of Joyce that was written by Richard Ellmann
Ellmann brokered a deal in 1960 for the library to purchase Nutting’s oil paintings of James and Nora Joyce
his pastel drawings of the Joyce children Giorgio and Lucia
The source for the January 1926 date of the Bloom sketch is an article

Local Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant handed over the keys to the medium tanker to eager brigade members on Monday night (27 May)
Leopold Fire Brigade Captain Chris Wilkinson said his members are already reaping the rewards of the enhanced safety features and increased capabilities of the new tanker
“We’re finding operationally it's more efficient and there's a really good feel about the truck among the brigade,” Chris said
so we’ve gained a drive system that has the capacity to get us further when we get called out
“It also helps that the design is similar to our other tanker
and we can now run with two crew cabin variants.”
Chris said the cabin configuration of the two tankers will be particularly effective when communicating with each other on the way to incidents
The new medium tanker can hold 2,350 litres of water to suppress fires and incorporates a crew protection system to help protect volunteers during a burnover
“The medium tanker features a suppression system to allow for in-vehicle firefighting and can comfortably hold a crew of five safely on-board,” Chris said
“The added features available on this tanker has seen our members develop the enthusiasm to apply for a further grant to get breathing apparatus on the truck
“The increased urban capability on offer is really exciting and something our volunteers are hoping to improve on moving forward.”
The new state-of-the-art vehicle was purchased through the Victorian Government’s Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP)
with the brigade receiving a grant of more than $320,000
the member brigade contributed more than $58,000
“This new tanker is a valuable asset to have in our community
but also to ensure the safety of our firefighters when responding to emergencies,” Chris said
“We set our sights on purchasing the new tanker and will now put our energy back into rebuilding our finances towards further upgrades for our brigade and local township.”

‘1970’ director Tomasz Wolski deploys archive footage to document wartime double agent
Polish-Israeli communist Leopold Trepper went from hero to outcast
Tomasz Wolski’s eye-opening The Big Chief deploys a wealth of expertly edited archive material to chart Trepper’s journey from mastermind of the wartime Soviet intelligence network The Red Orchestra to house arrest in 1970s Poland
His lengthy spells at the mercy of state oppression and anti-Semitism place him firmly in the tumult of twentieth century politics
and make for a documentary as gripping as any John Le Carre fiction.
Wolski has built a reputation for his creative use of archive material to illuminate key moments in Poland’s past
most recently in 1970 (2021) and A Year In The Life Of A Country (2024)
which covered the imposition of martial law in 1981
The Big Chief is no exception but extends the reach to encompass an impressive global array of both black and white and colour footage from such diverse sources as Eva Braun’s home movies
Sergei Loznitsa’s State Funeral (2019) and a variety of news agencies.
He begins by providing some context to 1960s Poland
under First Secretary Gomulka, explaining how anti-Semitism was increasingly used for political gain by the Communist regime
Jewish citizens were removed from high-ranking state positions
The state denied Trepper the luxury of leaving his homeland
follows French journalist Pierre Elkabbach as he arrives in Poland in 1972 to interview Trepper
His footage is confiscated before he leaves and believed destroyed
before being subsequently discovered in Polish archives
We can now see his shots of drab city streets where citizens hide their faces from the camera’s gaze
Elkabbach and his team are aware they are being followed and are encouraged to film official rallies populated by enthusiastic crowds and dancers in national costume
We can also see excerpts from the hour-long interview with Trepper who claims that he was never a spy but was “active in Nazi occupied France and Belgium”
we learn how Trepper arrived in Brussels to establish The Red Orchestra
a network reporting to Soviet Russia as the clouds of war gathered in Europe
He established a small export/import company
The information he provided is said to have been responsible for 300,000 German casualties
Trepper was arrested by the Gestapo in November 1942 and subsequently worked for the Germans
There is some debate over whether he was a double-agent and how he survived when others were tortured and killed
Trepper’s story is full of unexpected twists from his return to Moscow in 1945 and subsequent arrest and imprisonment by Stalin’s regime
to his position in 1970s Poland where he was refused permission to join his family in Jerusalem
The footage is extraordinary throughout, balancing desperate moments in ordinary wartime lives – the search for food
executions and hangings – with glimpses of the era’s most notorious leaders
whether an off-duty Hitler or Stalin’s body lying in state
They provide the vivid background whilst multiple interviews allow Trepper’s own words to outline where he fits in that bigger fresco of global events
Wolski includes poignant then and now interviews with
Trepper’s lawyer Daniel Soulez-Lariviere (who died in 2022) and journalist Gilles Perrault (who died in 2023) who published the book L’Orchestre Rouge in 1967
and yet there is still something essentially enigmatic about him
Wolski devotes the film’s final chapter to a selection of robust television debates in which Trepper defends himself against hostile individuals who assert that his anti-fascist heroism was more self-serving

Three Geelong areas joined a list of the nation’s 50 best suburbs expected to see the strongest growth in home values
St Leonards and Torquay were labelled “supercharged suburbs” in Hotspotting’s Winter Price Predictor Index after showing the sharpest rise in sales over four consecutive quarters – a precursor to price growth according to the research
including seven outside of metropolitan Melbourne around Bacchus Marsh

The report noted regional Victoria showed all the hallmarks of a market in recovery following a post-boom decline in 2022
Signs of the recovery in the latter part of 2023 continued with solid sales activity in the March 2024 quarter
The four-bedroom Estuary estate home at 15 Casy Grove
is listed with price hopes from $740,000 to $780,000
Bendigo and Ballarat had consistent sales levels and recent signs of uplift
but there are still some suburbs ranked as declining markets
Half of the 32 Geelong suburbs analysed by Hotspotting had positive rankings and although five were classified as declining markets
none had seen dramatic falls in sales activity
transaction numbers for Greater Geelong in the March 2024 quarter were 9 per cent higher than the same quarter of 2023
The report noted Highton for it’s consistent run of sales activity over nine consecutive quarters
Geelong was a great place to invest if taking a medium to long-term view
Hotspotting.com.au founder Terry Ryder said taking a medium to long-term view
“It’s become one of the strongest regional cities in the country
“It’s transitioned to a more modern economy
education and IT; there are a lot of jobs in the Greater Geelong area
is an opportunity for a downsizer or getaway that’s on the market for $750,000 to $790,000
“It’s not a case where people living there are commuting to Melbourne to work so much
because the local economy is strong as a lot of jobs are there
“It’s got a higher level of affordability than central Melbourne; all those things make Geelong desirable for both homebuyers and also for investor buyers.”
Leopold recorded six consecutive quarters of growth in sales activity
Hayden Leopold director Karen Purcell said the Bellarine Peninsula town had become popular with first-home buyers in particular
The renovated beachside shack at 12 Chaffey Court
is selling with price hopes from $700,000 to $750,000
Ms Purcell said sellers who factored in the market correction were finding price-sensitive buyers
“People that have accepted that there’s been an adjustment in the market – it’s a little bit price conscious at the moment with interest rates – those properties are moving really well,” Ms Purcell said
She said the wide spread of property eras available in Leopold was an attractive to a broad demographic of people
“You’ve got people that have been here for a long time or grew up in the area as well as the new areas where new people are coming in.”

ONE of the stalwarts of the Leopold Angling and Aquatic Club has been remembered by having the group’s clubrooms named in his honour
families and their friends packed into what is now known as the Dennis More Rooms on Saturday for their official opening
who passed away in February at the age of 72
was remembered as one of the loudest voices supporting the construction of a formal home for the club
which met for several years in a shed he owned
and a strong supporter of the club’s activities since its earliest days
Event MC Andrew McLaughlin said the Leopold Angling and Aquatic Club’s origins could be traced to December 18
when Mr More – a noted developer and landowner in the town – held an open day for the leisure park project in Leopold
“He ran into current president Murray McLaren
and said ‘We should start a fishing club’
and that’s when the fishing club was born
and that vision was to create a club for like-minded people that supported the local community
to celebrate a really significant milestone in the journey
with that vision now being a reality.”
He referenced the famous line from Hollywood film Field of Dreams: “If you build it
“To have this many people attend today’s official opening of this magnificent facility is testament to Dennis and his vision for the community of Leopold.”
Club vice-president Terry Whitehead acknowledged the many existing and previous club members
supporters and sponsors that had helped make the clubhouse happen
He said Mr More had widened a canal on his land in 2005 without seeking authority first from the council
which ended up in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal
“Dennis would say ‘It’s easy to do things without permission and beg forgiveness later’ – a mantra I came to see with Dennis on a few occasions.”
