It's time for a new Sydney suburb crawl and this one takes us to Lidcombe
the Western Sydney suburb that has a preponderance of wonderful Korean eateries
There is everything from including Korean fried chicken as well as its newer cousin Korean charcoal chicken as well as noodles
Come along as we discover some amazing restaurants
Laura and I arrive in Lidcombe just after 2pm on a Sunday
a few of the places we really wanted to visit are closed Sundays
This meant that our rather unwieldy list of around 10 restaurants was easily whittled down to 5 eateries
All had different types of Korean food and all are within easy walking distance of each other
Laura brought along lots of tupperware and ziplocks so we could take leftovers home and the restaurants had some takeaway bowls for the soups
It's raining when we head to our first stop Basak and Jogumja
We are the only non-Koreans in this small restaurant and service is friendly and helpful
The banchan is brought over - it's some spring onion and kim chi in a gochujang based sauce
We make fast work of the cabbage salad with mayonnaise on top that is simple but moreish
Basak and Jogumja is also known for their Korean fried chicken
This chicken has less of a crunchy shell (basak means crunchy or crispy) and the drumsticks and wings are coated in a honey butter sauce
We love the chicken dipped in the mayo of the cabbage salad too
The rain calls for beef short rib soup with slippery sweet potato noodles
A pot of metal rice is given and you can add this to give the broth but it's lovely sipping on the soup and watching the rain outside
Tip: you can ask for as many servings of the banchan as possible at no extra charge
Jeon and Kalguksu specialises in two things
Jeon is Korean for pancake but pancake can mean anything from an actual pancake to a small fritter
Kalguksu are knife-cut wheat flour noodles
Jeon and Kalguksu isn't easy to find as it doesn't come up on google maps (just put in Shop 16/2b Vaughan St
The restaurant has indoor seating and a few outdoor tables
Service is friendly and we start with banana Makgeolli rice wine served in a golden teapot with a chilled golden metal cup
A crispy Korean pancake is divided into three with kimchi
shredded potato and chives and tiny prawns
Dip this into the pancake sauce and you’ll be rewarded with a crispy
We both enjoy this so much that we pretty much finish the whole pancake crunching and nibbling away happily
If you’re feeling more in the mood for comfort
The slippery wheat noodles have a wonderful texture and are served with a generous serve of clams
nori in a wonderful broth in a cavernous bowl
I’d suggest splitting the pancake and noodles among two people
The prawn pancake is not really a pancake but deep fried tempura style of prawns with a pancake dipping sauce arranged in a circle
but doesn't quite reach the same heights as the other two dishes
Tip: The assorted pancake isn't a range of pancakes
it's an assortment of 7 types of fritters (meatball
we were charged twice (I don't think it was deliberate)
Our lovely waiter at Sutbul is super worried about us
He’s worried that we can’t take the spice of their spicy charcoal chicken
Sutbul means "charcoal fire" in Korean and the restaurant has imported a charcoal grill from Korea to create this Korean style charcoal chicken
The chicken comes in two varieties: salt or with spicy sauce and you can get a half half which we order
The spicy chicken has pieces of tteokbokki and is hot but it’s not unreasonably so if you like regularly enjoy spicy food you should be fine
The salt chicken is best dipped in the salt and pepper mix or the honey mustard sauce
Pair it with the rice balls ($14) that are sticky and delicious delights that you shape yourself using a gloved hand
And make sure you get some delicious laver seaweed bites filled with noodles and dip those in the spicy chicken sauce as the waiter recommends
For something delicious and filling try the spicy pork with rice
The thin pork slices are combined with vegetables like carrot and cabbage on a sizzling hot plate with a serve of steamed rice
The sauce for this dish is so moreish and we dip the tornado potatoes in them to season them
Tip: the tornado potatoes feature on a few posters but we didn't really think they were anything particularly special
Right near Sutbul chicken is modern Korean bistro called Tonight and our last savoury stop of the night
Tonight's chefs wear baseball caps and this restaurant caters to a young crowd with plenty of outdoor seating with a view of the park across the road
They bring the cutlery with some moreish wonton crisps and a wooden cube with the QR code to order
We go with one of the set menus and an extra dish
They have a few signature dishes and perhaps the number one is the Rose Ma La Xiang Guo
"It is like everything you would order in a malatang hot pot," says Laura and she's right
It comes in a creamy spicy sauce and you can add extra spiciness to it for a Szechaun kick
bok choy to squid and enoki mushrooms in a delicious
The truffle potato is like a hash brown or pommes Anna with grated pecorino and crispy onion and a tangy truffle mayonnaise style sauce
They're crisp and delicious and we love the texture and flavour of these (they could be hotter though as they're a bit lukewarm)
then make sure to order the giant Yakult bingsu (it was part of the set menu) which is featherlight shreds of Yakult ice
It’s a refreshing end to the meal and if you come between 5-7pm
you can order it as part of the Happy Hour set menu
Tip: Some people raved about the prawn toast but we weren't quite as taken with it
Also there is a choice to add chilli or numbing peppercorns to the Rose Ma La Xiang Guo
We added chilli to our Rose Ma La Xiang Guo but we ended up with numbing peppercorns
Our last stop is nearby at Gangnam Bakery for a drink to take home with us
While there are lots of desserts available here
we feel like we had our fill with the bingsu and we had spotted the Earl Grey thickshake when walking from Sutbul to Tonight
There are lots of interesting Korean drinks from banana coffee
We decide on three drinks: the strawberry latte
tiramisu coffee and the earl grey thickshake
The strawberry latte is basically strawberry syrup with milk
It isn't the most exciting and I probably wouldn't order it again
The tiramisu coffee doesn't really look like the picture they put on Instagram (that one looks a bit nicer) but it is a delicously creamy iced coffee with a hint of tiramisu from the milky coffee and chocolate on top
The earl grey thickshake flavour is good but it's not a thickshake
it's a semi frozen milkshake that once melted
However the flavour of the sweet Earl Grey syrup is definitely on point and this is both of our favourite drink
Which stop did you like the look of the most

Lidcombe Oval has received a much-needed grant from the Australian Government
with a planned new changeroom set to provide increased accessibility for female athletes
A $700,000 injection to the ground has been issued via the Government’s Play Our Way program
which allows ‘greater opportunities for women and girls to access
participate and remain involved in sport and physical activity’
Wests Tigers will contribute over $300,000 to the upgraded Lidcombe Oval facility
The Holman Barnes Group via Wests Ashfield will also make a significant monetary contribution to the upgrade

Having more change-rooms which cater better to the women’s game
that's where it's mainly aimed at,” Epifania said
“ It cuts away all the crossover when there’s men’s and women’s games on the same day
everyone now gets to use change rooms that are adequate
I think the important thing is that we’re working really closely with Wests Tigers
because we always said that we wanted Lidcombe Oval to be an outlet if they needed it in any way for games or training
“ The new funding means that as many games as they need to play here
or as many training sessions they need to have
we’re equipped with the right facilities to be able to cater to multiple teams at the same time.”
Over 30 Wests Tigers pathways games will be played at Lidcombe Oval in 2025
Among these matches include the Magpies NSW Cup games to be played against Newtown for the Tom Raudonikis Cup and against the Dragons for the Roy Masters Cup

all T6 Lidcombe & Bankstown Line train services will not be running for two months — leaving Bankstown
Birrong and Yagoona without any trains at all
Train services connecting Lidcombe to Bankstown via Regents Park will be suspended for 63 days from 27 April
The T6 Lidcombe & Bankstown Line connects these western suburbs to the broader railway network through Lidcombe and Regents Park
a key link whilst the bulk of the Bankstown line undergoes conversion to metro
In addition to the ongoing closure of the line from Sydenham to Bankstown
construction works associated with this conversion necessitate the temporary closure of the T6 line
meaning travellers in a swathe of Western Sydney will be reliant on fare-free replacement buses
These construction works include signalling upgrades and platform extensions at Bankstown which will ultimately improve the capacity of the T6 line
The latter works will permit train lengths on the service to be doubled to eight carriages
about 15 to 20 thousand passengers have used the Lidcombe & Bankstown Line per week
making it the least patronised of all suburban lines
It sees more passengers than the intercity Southern Highlands and Hunter lines which rely on two-carriage single-decker trains
The closure announcement follows the revelation in early March that the expected opening of the metro extension to Bankstown had been pushed back to 2026
Transport minister John Graham emphasised that the disruption will be proven worthwhile
“Communities that use this line will experience disruption due to these necessary rail upgrades
the line will be able to accommodate rail services with double the capacity while connecting to a world class new Southwest Metro service,” Graham said
“This is a relatively small shuttle line by passenger numbers
but the loss of services for nine weeks will be disruptive for the passengers who use the T6 Line and we want to make sure commuters are aware and know what the alternatives are.”
“We will have fare-free rail-replacement buses in place and marshals on the ground to ensure all passengers can continue to get where they need to go.”
Transport for NSW outlined the alternatives that will be available to travellers
including replacement buses and train services which will continue to operate
including the T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line through Lidcombe
Passengers at Lidcombe will still be able to use that service as well as the T1 Western and T2 Leppington & Inner West lines to travel to the city centre
“There will be no change in service levels for these lines,” the agency said
Two replacement bus routes were announced: the all-stations 8T6 route and the express 8AT6 shuttle between Bankstown and Lidcombe only
“Passengers will be able to interchange to train services at Lidcombe and Regents Park
or interchange onto the pink Southwest Link buses at Bankstown,” Transport for NSW said
“Communities and passengers along the line will be informed about the transport changes via comprehensive communications and engagement activities.”
The T6 Lidcombe & Bankstown Line will shut down for nine weeks
A major train line in Sydney will be closed for nine weeks as work on the Southwest Metro continues
The T6 Lidcombe & Bankstown Line will shut down between April 27 and June 29
with trains to be replaced by free replacement buses
the New South Wales Government said that when work is complete
Eight-car services will be able to run – an increase on the four-car trains operating at the moment
The T6 is a shuttle line of six stations that was created as part of the shutdown of the former T3 Bankstown line
It carries approximately 11,000 passengers a day of the more than one million people who use the wider Sydney rail network
Berala and Regents Park can continue to use other rail lines at those stations as alternatives including T3 services
Passengers at Lidcombe heading into the city or Inner West can also continue to use the T1 Western Line
T2 Inner West Line or T3 Liverpool via Regents Park Line
There will be no change in service levels for these lines
The stations impacted and closed are Yagoona
The work on the T6 line involves the extension of the Sydney Trains’ platforms at Bankstown Station to enable an 8-car service
including installation of a track layout that allows access to both platforms at Bankstown station
The following replacement bus routes will operate between Bankstown and Lidcombe during this time:
Passengers will be able to interchange to train services at Lidcombe and Regents Park
or interchange onto the pink Southwest Link buses at Bankstown
Communities and passengers along the line will be informed about the transport changes via comprehensive communications and engagement activities
Southwest Link bus services will continue to operate as normal between Sydenham and Bankstown
Minister for Transport John Graham said: “Communities that use this line will experience disruption due to these necessary rail upgrades
the line will be able to accommodate rail services with double the capacity while connecting to a world class new Southwest Metro service
but the loss of services for nine weeks will be disruptive for the passengers who use the T6 Line and we want to make sure commuters are aware and know what the alternatives are
“We will have fare-free rail-replacement buses in place and marshals on the ground to ensure all passengers can continue to get where they need to go.”

Bankstown-Lidcombe and Liverpool Hospitals have joined the NSW Government’s 12-month trial of body worn cameras
The announcement brings the number of participating hospitals to five — across northern and south western Sydney and the Illawarra
security staff are equipped with body worn cameras and can activate these cameras in response to incidents involving aggression and violence in the hospital
The trial — which will be independently evaluated once completed — is intended to determine how effective the presence of the cameras is at deterring and de-escalating violent incidents
“Any instances of aggression towards staff will not be tolerated
and appropriate action will always be taken against individuals who behave in such a manner,” NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park said
“I look forward to the results of this trial which will provide insight into how we can reduce instances of violence and aggression in our public hospitals.”
The trial is part of ongoing implementation of recommendations from the Anderson Review of Hospital Security and follows implementation of other recommendations by the NSW Government to improve hospital security
These include the standardising of Code Black procedures
the establishment of the Safety and Security Improvement Unit within the NSW Ministry of Health and enhanced support for patient experience officers
“Liverpool is one of the largest hospitals in our state
I am very pleased that it is one of the first to implement this key safety measure,” Member for Liverpool Charishma Kaliyanda said
“The government has been clear: aggression toward healthcare staff cannot be tolerated
I look forward to the results of this trial
which will inform how we can reduce violent incidents in our public hospitals.”
The trial commenced in December 2024 at Royal North Shore Hospital

The heritage-listed former Lidcombe Hospital site has been converted into an award-winning
with heritage conservation and new development proceeding over a number of stages since 2006
The heritage buildings and landscape have been repurposed
but through careful design and interpretation
the site’s significance as a hospital that provided innovative health care for more than 100 years can still be appreciated
Botanica is now a 750-dwelling residential subdivision
covering 44 ha of the former hospital site
a core heritage precinct of 7 ha containing a range of significant buildings and spaces has been adaptively re-used for residential
and circulation spaces were identified in the conservation management plan as important parts of the place’s history
As a result they have been retained in the new development and form some 7 ha of parklands
is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register due to its outstanding significance in the history of health care in NSW
It was the site of a number of significant advances in health care
looking after the aged and infirm for over a century (1893–1995)
Closing in 1995 the site was then repurposed as the Media Village for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games
providing short-term accommodation for approximately 5000 visiting journalists
The heritage precinct contains an exceptional and rare collection of fine
government and private architects including James Barnet
The site planning and landscaping are also significant
representing 19th century innovations in health care that were advanced by Florence Nightingale
as an aid to treating and caring for patients
hospital and asylum buildings should be surrounded by gardens
and the buildings should be designed to provide natural light
By the 1990s the site was superfluous to the Health Department’s needs and was sold into private ownership for redevelopment as housing
At an early stage in the redevelopment process
the owner and developer Frasers Property Australia nominated the heritage precinct for inclusion on the NSW State Heritage Register thereby ensuring greater community awareness and expert scrutiny
The heritage-listed site underwent a stage of master planning
with the aim of balancing the parts of the site identified as needing to be retained with spaces available for redevelopment
Conservation of the entire site followed an innovative two-tiered conservation management planning process with the master plan informed by an overarching conservation management plan (CMP) and archaeological zoning plan
The CMP defined the appropriate heritage curtilage for the heritage precinct
determined the locations for new development around its periphery
and set out principles for protecting the settings of individual elements such as the Superintendent’s Residence
Specific elements conservation policies were then developed to provide detailed guidance for the conservation and adaptive re-use of individual buildings
The key driver in this work was that the functions of the hospital should remain visible and able to be appreciated even when the site transitioned to a new use
As a result the historic core and the hospital’s key roads and paths were prioritised for retention while areas of lesser importance were designated for new development
The core of the heritage precinct is the Village Green
once the centre of the hospital’s administration and the location of its most significant buildings
Surrounding the Green are nine pavilion wards designed by Walter Liberty Vernon with wrap-around verandahs and decorative timber features
and the 1887 two-storey former Superintendent’s House
The heritage-listed pavilion wards have been redeveloped as “The Gallery” residences
and the Superintendent’s House has been redeveloped as “The Manor”
These dwellings now form part of the unique features within the wider development
Converting the hospital buildings into residential dwellings posed numerous design challenges
such as providing open-plan living spaces while maintaining the unique character of each building
requiring historic landscapes to be integrated into the public realm without detracting from their historic character
Other significant buildings within the heritage precinct have been adaptively re-used as a childcare centre
church (former hall) and as retail and commercial properties
replicating the once active community hub within the hospital which originally housed a bakery
The unique qualities of the site continue to be a selling point for the residential development
Restoration of each building began with a detailed site assessment to identify the work required
and then the original fabric was made good and re-used where possible
Heritage trade specialists were engaged to undertake an extensive program of restoration and repair works
Timber floors and windows were retained but they needed extensive work to repair past damage
including salvaging and reinstating float glass from other buildings on the site
The site master plan identified that many of the original roads
and historical connections between the various elements should be retained as a way of understanding the historical functioning of the hospital
The result is that 1.4 ha of parkland has been dedicated to council
now incorporating cycleways and a heritage trail with interpretation hubs and element-specific signage
Other important parts of the original hospital landscaping
like the entry drive lined with hoop pines and phoenix palms
have formed prominent components of the redevelopment
The new landscape design involved adapting the former hospital grounds to new public uses that are viable and of a high quality while retaining trees and addressing watershed issues
This included limiting the choice of new materials used in public spaces
to those that respond to the site’s historic character
posed enormous challenges that have been resolved by a collaborative process of assessment and progressive development
The significant buildings have been retained and sensitively adapted for new uses
and significant landscape spaces repurposed as public open space
The result is a residential precinct that celebrates its heritage features as assets within the new development
The faithful conservation and successful re-use of the Superintendent’s Residence and Vernon wards as prestigious dwellings represents best practice in adapting a component of a dilapidated brownfield hospital complex into a high-quality residential precinct which retains the key heritage values
and settings of the place and interprets them for future generations

I didn’t expect it to be so popular,” says the chef of Guk’s Eedaero Gamjatang

Guk’s Eedaero Gamjatang is in the new-school part of Lidcombe, on the south side of the train station as part of a development of more than 150 apartments. Sitting in a thriving Korean mini-piazza, owner-chef Jongguk Lee arrived in Sydney from Seoul in 2007, before training at Le Cordon Bleu and then cooking Japanese food for more than a decade.
Lee calls gamjatang “the soul food of Koreans”. His restaurant goes through about 60 kilograms of pork bones each day just to make the broth, with a batch made in the morning and then again at lunchtime.
For Lee’s restaurant manager Jiwon Yeo, gamjatang’s rich and spicy broth makes it the perfect hangover cure. “In Korea, you can find gamjatang restaurants open 24 hours a day and the price is cheap, which is why it’s so popular,” she says. Guk’s isn’t open around the clock but pretty close, serving from 7am to midnight daily. Yeo says there are often people already waiting in line when the doors open.
Photo: James BrickwoodIt’s a modestly decorated space geared for speed and efficiency rather than comfort. Gamjatang is the only item on the menu, served in a stone pot that comes in a “small” size serving two to three people for $40, large ($70 for groups of four or more), or a single version for solo diners. Similar to the gamjatang restaurants in Seoul, you choose your own adventure by adding carbs such as rice cakes, instant noodles or udon. Our table opts for the hand-torn sujebi noodles.
Each pot arrives at the table on its own portable gas cooker, piled high with bones and a rich, red broth dusted with perilla seeds. A staff member flicks on the flame and the cauldron begins to bubble as you stir pork bones, wombok, shallots, potatoes, enoki mushrooms and perilla leaves.
Photo: James BrickwoodFor an extra $7, the bokkeumbap fried rice, prepared tableside by staff, is a riveting way to end the meal. Rice, fish roe, onion, carrot and seaweed flakes are added to the leftover broth (they’ll add some extra soup if you’ve already slurped the entire lot) and left to cook in the same pot to create a crisp, scorched texture – Korea’s version of the socarrat rice layer that forms in a traditional paella.
Arrive early or expect to queue, or maybe consider one of the other stores. Guk’s has expanded to a second location in Lidcombe, and now has stores in Ashfield and Eastwood, too.
“Honestly, I didn’t expect it to be so popular,” says Lee. “I’m surprised that not only Koreans, but also people from other backgrounds, have liked our restaurant.” Lidcombe might be gunning for the title of Sydney’s Koreatown but honestly, it doesn’t matter who takes the crown. We’ve got the most exciting Korean food in Australia, and I’ll say geonbae (cheers) to that.
Go-to dish: Gamjatang spicy pork bone stew ($40)
Drinks: Selection of Korean beers, soju and makgeolli

He then allegedly sexually assaulted the girl before she ran away
following an investigation assisted by the State Crime Command’s sex crimes squad
He was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a person under 16 and armed robbery with an offensive weapon
Allywa was refused bail at Newtown Local Court on Tuesday
with Magistrate Alexander Mijovich noting his lengthy criminal history which includes violence
The court heard Allywa had in the past approached a young girl in a train station with scissors
walked up to another young girl in a shopping centre
and asked a young male at a train station to suck his penis while he held a knife
“All of the victims in his other convictions were unknown to the accused,” the prosecutor said
“He seems to have no regard for public safety given his offending occurred in broad daylight in a car park
The accused is dangerous to have in the community.”
Mijovich rejected defence lawyer Sharmila Jordan-Mee’s argument that Allywa needed to be granted bail to care for sick family members and to get treatment for his health issues
including schizophrenia and an intellectual disability
He has a history of violence and a custodial sentence is highly likely,” Mijovich said

5 March 2025] – One of Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisations is marking a “new era of neuro care and wellbeing” with the official opening of the Lidcombe Wellbeing Centre in Sydney’s west
The Wellbeing Centre and the neighbouring Lidcombe Home
which offers long and short-term (respite) accommodation
filling a vital gap for a growing number of people living with neurological conditions and those seeking healthy-ageing support
said: “By offering a range of specialist services in one location
the Lidcombe Wellbeing Centre and Lidcombe Home is set to become a vital hub for the local community
“We’ve already had many regional clients’ express interest in short-term stays to help them to access the Wellbeing Centre’s full suite of services — as it’s conveniently located just few steps away from the apartments.”
The Wellbeing Centre provides services including exercise physiology
All specifically tailored to the goals of people living with neurological conditions and those seeking preventative healthcare as they age
“We know that more people are being diagnosed with a variety of neurological conditions — often lifelong and requiring ongoing care
Living with a neuro condition can mean a lot of appointments
welcoming place is so important for people living in Sydney,” said Mr Blewonski
With more than 65 years of insight into MS
MS Plus is now expanding its services to other neurological conditions where these services assist and there is a gap
Mr Blewonski said the precinct represented a significant step forward in providing accessible
high-quality care and fostering a sense of community
architect-designed Lidcombe Wellbeing Centre features spaces designed to enhance comfort
“I would like to thank our generous donors
the NSW Government and all those supporters who helped us to deliver this incredible new space,” Mr Blewonski said
“The Lidcombe Wellbeing Centre and Lidcombe Home is truly a celebration of how collaboration and community are improving outcomes for our neuro and healthy ageing communities.”
Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said: “I am delighted that MS Plus is opened the doors to its new state-of-the-art wellbeing centre
which will provide critical care and support for so many in our community.”
Minister for Disability Inclusion Kate Washington said: “The NSW Government is proud to partner with MS Plus
helping deliver this impressive precinct which will make a real difference to people's lives
“By bringing together specialist services
it ensures more people can live independently and with dignity.”
For more information about MS Plus and the Lidcombe Wellbeing Centre, visit msplus.org.au/LidcombeWellbeing or call 1800042138
Muso Chris Tantchev was diagnosed with MS at age 20 and still went on to find success as a member of hard rock bands that played at the Falls Festival in 2004
on Rove Live in 2006 and the NRL 2007 semi-final
Chris’s music still features on Triple J Unearthed
Chris became unable to meet the physical demands of touring and performing on stage
Chris is a regular at MS Plus Lidcombe Wellbeing Centre where he receives treatment for his condition and loves the new centre
the MS didn’t really affect my day-to-day life as much
It was a bit set and forget in those early days — especially as a 20-year-old
But in the last five or six years I’ve noticed a decline in mobility and other areas
which has meant I have sought more help.”
Chris works with an exercise physiologist and a physiotherapist to make sure he can keep living well with MS
And he’s looking forward to spending time once again on his music
“By getting back to writing and recording inspiring and motivational songs
I hope to connect with listeners on an emotional level and offer them hope and encouragement
Music has the power to bridge gaps and uplift spirits
and I intend to harness that power to create something meaningful
at the same time it has also given me something back
It’s taught me about humility and acceptance and about being more open with myself and with others about what’s happening.”
MS Plus fills gaps in health and wellbeing in Sydney's west

another stretch of train line is (temporarily) closing
with the T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line set to be closed for nine weeks from late April
the T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line will be closed for nine full weeks
The stations affected are just those on the T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line: Yagoona
If you’re travelling along the Lidcombe line past Regents Park
it’s just the short offshoot line that’s affected
with the 8T6 stopping at all stations between Bankstown and Lidcombe
and the 8AT6 running an express service between Bankstown and Lidcombe
Unlike the stretch of train line between Sydenham and Bankstown
the Lidcombe and Bankstown Line isn’t being converted into a metro line
but upgrades are being made to “future-proof” the platforms and line
The upgrades include enabling the line to carry eight-car trains (currently only the smaller four-car trains can run along the line) and extending the platforms at Bankstown station

KMall 09 in Lidcombe is a must visit if you love Korean food or Korean products
This enormous 2000 square metre/21,500square foot store is located at Lidcombe Shopping Centre and not only can you find an enormous range of Korean grocery items you can also have a meal at the food court or buy KBeauty products
So what can you expect on your visit to KMall
Dear Reader, I am in my Korean food era and I obsessed with anything K Food (and K beauty) related
So when Sophia suggested that we go to KMall
I was very excited to see what it was like
KMall 09 is on the top floor of the expansive Lidcombe Shopping centre and takes up space at one end of the centre with a second floor scheduled to open in June
It's a slightly futuristic and very modern looking warehouse style superstore
You can use trolleys or a range of baskets to shop with and the first section is of fresh flowers and fresh fruit and vegetables
Soft lettuces are sold in a cloud of mist to keep them fresh while enormous daikon radishes and squash are sold alongside adorable miniature pumpkins
As expected there's a large range of pickled radish, some sold already sliced long for making gimbab (my passion)
There's also a large display of kim chi and ready made snacks
Everything you could ever want is there - except banana milk
Korean people love the tetra packs of banana milk and while other flavours are available (taro etc) the banana has sold out
There are plenty of ready meals in the fridge section and prepackaged meats
Everything looks fantastically fresh and there is a lot of wagyu available
more than you would find at a Western supermarket
I bought some honey toast which was $2.50 down from $5 with an expiry date of 2025 and you can find other specials all clustered within one display
Other specials are the milk drinks and konnyakku drinks
I round the corner and I'm excited to find the food court
I quickly find Sophia and we decide to have something to eat
It's 6:30pm and every single table is taken and it can be difficult to nab a table as it's like musical chairs
Your best bet is to see who is almost finished and stand near their table
There are 5 vendors here all selling different things: there's a butcher
another vendor sells tteokbokki and fried dumplings
another sells soups and gimbab while another sells Korean Fried Chicken
There is also the very popular fish cake chain Samjin Amook and there's also Brown Born bakery
You do want to arrive before 7pmish or ideally before 6pm because the bakery and Simbaj sell out before then
Seeing gimbab we make an order at Buddumak and take a buzzer while Sophia stakes out a table
We both find empty tables at the same time and are only waiting 10 minutes
By that time the buzzer sounds and we have our tray to collect the gimbab and dumpling soup
I grab a mandarin juice from the Red Pepper stand that tastes like pure mandarin juice
The gimbab is premade and was discounted from $9 to $5 (love a bargain!)
It's delicious and I love the sautéed spinach
sauteed carrot and egg inside it and the sesame rice
I absolutely loved the beef bone soup with rice cakes
It's not spicy at all but that doesn't mean it's bland
The broth is remarkably full of flavour and pitch perfect
It's so good that even though I am full I keep going back to more soup sometimes spearing a rice cake or a slice of beef
As we were sitting there I saw so many stop by Samjin Amook and was curious to see why they were so busy
It is Korea's most popular fish cake bakery that sells items that you can heat up using fish cakes
At the front counter they also have a soup with fish cakes on a stick that is just about perfect for winter
I remember having something similar when I lived in Japan where it was called Odeng
In Korea it is called Eomuk and it is sold per piece in a cup with some fish broth made with seaweed
It's deliciously warming and springy textured
I see other customers come back and ask for more soup afterwards too which they ladle into the cup
For dessert Sophia bought a flat croissant or keu-loong-gi from the Brown Born bakery. It comes in a clear plastic sleeve and is pressed flat and brushed with syrup that caramelises once it is pressed. Holy heavens it's good - buttery and crisp and moreish although the size somehow makes it best for sharing or nibbling at for a long time! And I become so obsessed with it that I make my own version of a Korean flat croissant at home
Do you ever just wander the aisles of supermarkets when overseas
Inki Yun (right) and his partner Soyeon Jeon have purchased a new home at Lidcombe Central
Lidcombe is set to have one of the biggest surges in new homes across the city
ending a couples year and a half long search
The western Sydney suburb is anticipating an influx of 1,363 new ready to sell units that are commencing construction this year
according to new figures from PRD real estate
other Sydney suburbs are stunted with no new homes and are crippled by NSW’s continual housing shortage
Only 476 units sold in Lidcombe between January 2023 and March 2024
suggesting the 1,300 new units could push the suburb into over supply
locals are jumping at the opportunity to secure a new home and welcoming the new stock with open arms

two-bathroom apartment off-the-plan at Lidcombe Central
Mr Yun said the search had been “difficult.”
“I’d been looking for a year and a half before I purchased the property,” he said
He paid $850,000 for the new apartment which is due to be completed in 18 months
Looking forward to the “work-life balance,” Mr Yun was drawn to the new shopping centre that would be at the bottom of the apartment complex
as well as the proximity to his workplace at Concord Hospital
“I like the fact that it’s central and with my Korean background there’s a lot of Korean grocery stores and restaurants around this area.”
Mr Yun said one of the biggest factors before buying was the price with current interest rates as well as researching the construction company
“With construction material prices increases
the biggest was is this construction company trustworthy,” he said
“Globally there are a lot of companies that are changing over their materials to cut costs

Lidcombe Central is set to have 318 apartments
in which the first 67 apartments sold out within the first few weeks according to project developer and CEO of Pheonix Construction Chris Xistouris
right in front of the train station and the lack of a shopping centre in the area
this will include a 5,000 metre shopping mall with associated office and a level of visitor parking for the shopping centre too,” he said
it’s the centre point of Sydney and it’s still affordable
It’s not as far out as Penrith but if you go further in to Zetland it’s too expensive
Mr Xistouris said he didn’t see Sydney’s housing crisis slowing down in the next five years due to the huge lack of supply
“We wouldn’t be selling like we are if that wasn’t the case
I was going to hold stage two but we’ve had so much demand I’ve opened it up early.”
What a Lidcombe Central apartment will look like
This comes as reports show Sydney is falling short of meeting the NSW governments commitment to delivering 377,000 “new well-located homes” by 2029
NSW recorded the largest decline in new building approvals across the country
dipping over 20 per cent in the three months to May 2024
according to the Housing Industry Association

This cosy restaurant attracts a broad church of customers for its gracious hospitality, low-key jazz soundtrack and short, no-filler menu.
First-generation Koreans are fans because owner Justin Shin is cooking his mother-in-law’s recipes and the soups are a cleantasting reminder of home. Local workers like the lunchtime prices. TikTokers come to film and eat the makguksu, featuring chilled buckwheat noodles slicked with perilla-seed oil.
Best of all, though, is the haejangguk or “hangover soup” of gorgeously rounded flavour built on long simmered beef bones. There’s also the spicy (but not that spicy) yukgaejang with beef brisket, leek, black mushroom, crunchy chive and prawn pan-fried pancakes, and sliced pork belly you can season with little curls of fermented shrimp.
Arrive around 11.30am for the best chance of a table on Saturdays (doors open at noon), otherwise the wait can be up to an hour.

Calls to extend the Parramatta Light Rail out to Lidcombe are growing
after the State Government announced construction of Stage 2 would finally begin later this year
Cumberland Council Mayor Lisa Lake has welcomed the $2 billion commitment to deliver the next stage of the mammoth transport infrastructure project – but she’s urging the NSW Government not to forget about Lidcombe
“I call on the Government to examine and include an extension of light rail from Sydney Olympic Park to Lidcombe as part of Parramatta Light Rail,” she said
“This proposal has previously been endorsed by Council and included as part of the recommendations of the Legislative Council’s Parliamentary Inquiry into current and future public transport needs in western Sydney
following Council’s submissions and advice at the Inquiry
“The parking problems that we have in Lidcombe [are] because people have got very little public transport,” she said
“The few buses that go out over that way near Carter Street are just unacceptable to assist with the increased density that is now happening there.”
Stage 2 will see a 12km alignment link the Parramatta CBD to Sydney Olympic Park via Camellia
Melrose Park and Wentworth Point with 14 new stops
three new river crossings and 8.5km of new walking and cycling paths
Passengers will be able to travel from Sydney Olympic Park to Camellia in around 30 minutes
and on to the Parramatta CBD in another seven minutes
with initial work to begin later this year on a new 320-metre public and active transport bridge over Parramatta River
Minister for Transport Jo Haylen said there are 280,000 people expected to live along the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 alignment by 2041
“We know there are more communities that need access to this vital infrastructure investment,” she said
“This investment will get shovels in the ground and construction started before the end of this parliamentary term
The local Council will now write to Haylen
continuing to advocate for the extension of the Parramatta Light Rail from Carter Street at Sydney Olympic Park to terminate at Lidcombe Station
The former home of ex-Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer
made famous when his extravagant wedding closed down the Lidcombe street in which it is located
has been damaged in what authorities say is a suspicious blaze
The six-bedroom Frances Street home was sitting unoccupied at about 9.30pm on Tuesday when neighbours heard an alarm from the property and found flames darting from the second level

The front door was left open and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes
Fire and Rescue NSW superintendent Adam Dewberry said
it was enough time to significantly damage the interior of the home
Firefighters trained to spot signs of deliberately lit fires discovered suspicious burn marks
“The responding firefighters have identified some serious areas of concern in how the fire was ignited,” Dewberry said
A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the source of the fire is under way
which boasts a 13-car garage and a Persian onyx staircase
in 2015 became one of the most recognisable in Sydney when Mehajer wed his partner in a ceremony involving four helicopters
a procession of sports cars and a heavy police presence
The suburban street was shut down as the then-Auburn deputy mayor arrived at his home with his posse of Lamborghinis
The home would eventually become part of bankruptcy proceedings when a liquidator
found he owed almost $600,000 to a Greenacre company for the elaborate stonework inside the home

The home was sold by the bank for $3.85 million in November. Mehajer is currently serving prison time for domestic violence and fraud offences

Commuters have been warned that there will be significant delays to Sydney Trains services today
due to industrial action impacting the maintenance of infrastructure of railway stations
The industrial action will primarily affect Redfern and Central Stations
This also created delays yesterday morning and evening
Commuters have been told to expect reduced service frequencies and delays across several lines
Additional journey times and large service gaps are expected on the T2 Inner West & Leppington
and Central Coast & Newcastle lines today
The T3 Liverpool line will operate between Liverpool and Lidcombe only
at a reduced frequency of 1-2 trains per hour
Customers travelling to Airport link stations from the CBD will only have a train every 15 minutes and should allow up to 15 minutes’ additional journey time
Limited buses will replace trains on the T6 line all day between Lidcombe and Bankstown
All other suburban and intercity lines will experience some delays
A NSW Transport spokesperson apologised to commuters about the disruptions
“Sydney Trains again apologises to our passengers for the disruption, and thanks everybody for their understanding as staff work to minimise the impacts of this industrial action,” said the statement
“The Rail Agencies and the Combined Rail Unions (CRU) are continuing to bargain for a new Enterprise Agreement.”
ETU secretary, Allen Hicks told 7 News despite weeks of “intensive” negotiations
workers were still “no closer to a fair agreement” with the NSW Government
“Despite having months to come to the table and bargain on key claims
the government has thrown workers’ needs under the bus and stubbornly refused to make progress towards a deal that recognises the skills
work and experience of Sydney Trains members
as well as the exorbitant rise in cost-of-living pressures for those living in greater Sydney,” he said
“Workers have no choice but to ramp up protected industrial action to get the government to take notice and work constructively towards a fair deal.”
Hicks acknowledged that the entire point of the industrial action is to cause ‘a headache’ for the management rather than commuters themselves
The ETU secretary also told 7 News that at present
electrical workers at Sydney Trains are paid up to 57% less than electricians doing the same work at Queensland Rail
“What electrical workers at Sydney Trains are asking for is incredibly reasonable – we just want an enterprise agreement that keeps pace with the cost of living and ensures a safe workplace,” Hicks said
Hicks said that workers would be responding to emergencies and hazards during the strike

AIG found the roof damage was caused by inadequate structure strength
Link copiedShareShare articleThe owners of units inside a western Sydney apartment block that lost half of its roof during a storm in January have found out their insurer will not foot the multi-million-dollar repair bill
Global insurance giant AIG initially told owners they would not be out-of-pocket
but after further investigation the company changed its position
AIG claimed the roof of the building, which was developed by controversial Auburn councillor Ronney Oueik
contained structural defects and the storm was not the cause
A letter from AIG to the owners stated "structural defects were the sole cause of the loss and damage" and a building that complied with the Building Code of Australia would have withstood the storm
"The wind records [on January 30] reflect the wind speeds to be well below those generally classified as a storm ..
the claim is excluded in its entirety," the document said
[Former Auburn mayor] Ronney Ouiek develops a building, the insurer tells us it was riddled with structural defects, and now the owners are left out-of-pocket.
After the storm, the owners corporation made a claim through AIG for repairs to the roof, repairs to the building below due to storm and water damage, loss of rent and temporary accommodation costs.
The AIG letter revealed that its preliminary report found the building lost 50 per cent of its roof due to storm activity and wind uplift.
The company subsequently arranged for emergency make-safe works, temporary fencing, scaffolding, removal of debris, and an initial payment of $100,000 for accommodation costs.
However, after further inspections and a report last month from structural engineer Roderick Broune, AIG changed its position.
"The damage to the roof was caused by the failure of the builder to construct a roof structure that had adequate strength to resist the wind uplift forces to which it could reasonably be expected to be subjected," Mr Broune's report said.
"While ... it was the specific weather event that occurred at the property that imposed the loads that resulted in the damage to the roof, it is not reasonable to say that this was the cause of the damage."
Auburn Council signed off on modifications to the building in 2008. (ABC News)
Up to 50 owners, many of whom are young families and mum and dad investors, are seeking legal advice about whether to keep pursing AIG or whether they should go after Auburn Council, which approved the development and also signed off on modifications to the roof in 2008.
One quote estimated the repair bill at $2.6 million.
In the meantime, the owners are applying for a $2.4 million loan so they can start repairing their homes.
"It's a very stressful time for everyone ... it's pretty tough mentally and it is costing a lot of people a lot of money," apartment owner and executive committee member Sathyan Arasalingam told the ABC.
"It's pretty frustrating because we as owners are also paying mortgages ... and we're all paying to live in different apartments.
"We want to start the repairs as soon as we can because time is money — it's costing us money to leave the site as it is right now."
NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley is the local MP and has met the owners and inspected the damage.
"This tells us everything that's wrong with the Auburn Council," Mr Foley told the ABC.
One quote estimates the damage bill at $2.6 million. (Supplied)
"Ronney Ouiek develops a building, the insurer tells us it was riddled with structural defects and now the owners are left out of pocket.
"For the life of me, how can you tolerate a situation where the [former] mayor [Ronney Oueik] develops his own building then gets his own council to certify that everything is in order?"
Mr Foley said he would call for next month's public inquiry into Auburn Council to examine what happened at the apartment block.
A spokesperson for Auburn Council told the ABC that the council had helped residents straight after the storm and was continuing to monitor the situation.
"Additionally Council is currently undertaking its own independent investigations into the cause of the damage and addressing the comments as raised by AIG, with the Owners Corporation," the council spokesperson said.
"Council's investigations are continuing and it is not appropriate to respond further until those investigations are complete."
AIG has not returned the ABC's phone calls or emails.
