The NSW Labor government’s crusade to free up more green space as Sydney grapples with a shift to higher density living will open school ovals to the public after hours and on weekends
In an expansion of a program which already allows hundreds of schools to open up playing fields during the holidays
the Minns government will trial public schools also making their ovals available during term time
Premier Chris Minns said there was “a significant amount of green space that the public have been locked out of for many years”
Manly West Public School will allow its oval to be used by the community after hours
Schools that will be in the first phase of the after-hours trial include Kogarah High
Roseville and Seaforth primary schools and Strathfield Girls High
The government is determined to find more green space for the city
which has locked Minns in a turf war with golfers over his plans to halve Moore Park’s 18-hole golf course to create a 20-hectare park
Minns last year vowed to slash nine holes from Moore Park
and convert nearly half the 45-hectare site into a park for residents of the nearby fast-growing suburbs of Green Square
citing the need to balance density with green space
local councillors and even US actor Mark Wahlberg
The next target in Minns’ greens space push will be schools
Under the government’s popular shared spaces program
almost 200 school ovals are available during the holidays for public use
but they cannot be used outside the term break
Minns said unlocking extra green space outside of school hours was “especially important” as the government urges young people to get off devices and be active following the introduction of mobile phone bans in schools, as well as social media restrictions
The premier said the shared spaces trial would also provide more critical green space and outdoor recreation as “we continue to build much-needed new homes and apartments for young people and families across the state”
Kogarah High School is one of the first schools opening for community access following upgrades to its oval
The oval had been shared between the school and the public outside school hours for decades until the policy was shelved under the former government
Fencing has been replaced on several sides of the field to improve safety and access for residents
and two new stair entrances and a ramp and gate have been installed to improve accessibility
The oval will be open to the public from 4pm to 8pm Monday to Friday
it will be open to the public from 8am-8pm every day
Minns said he had “never been a fan of locking up school grounds to the public”
“It seems like a waste to keep hundreds of school ovals locked up,” he said

Wests Tigers have recovered from a 16-point deficit in the first half to stun the Sea Eagles 34-26 at Leichhardt Oval on Thursday night
The Sea Eagles were left to rue a lack of discipline that saw three of their players sent to the sin bin and not even a Tom Trbojevic hat-trick could save their blushes
After denying the Tigers early when Tom Trbojevic held Aidan Sezer up over the line
the Sea Eagles went up the other end and scored through Jason Saab to take a 6-0 lead with Reuben Garrick's conversion
Four minutes later the Sea Eagles had a second when they swept to the left side and sent rookie winger Lehi Hopoate over for his seventh try in 10 matches
Manly's third try came courtesy of a 40-metre charge from bench forward Ethan Bullemor who found Tom Trbojevic in support and the scoreline blew out to 16-0 after 23 minutes
A trademark scoot out of dummy half from skipper Api Koroisau in the 26th minute got the Tigers on the board before fullback Heath Mason finished off a slick passing raid to cross wide out and the home side were back within four points
The Sea Eagles went down 12 men just before half-time when Bullemor was binned for a professional foul on the back of a string of penalties against the visitors
Despite being down a man the Sea Eagles maintained their lead but no sooner had Bullemor returned than Haumole Olakau'atu was marched for 10 minutes for dangerous contact and the Tigers went ahead when Alex Seyfarth sliced through
Six minutes later the Tigers had the Leichhardt Oval faithful on their feet when a Lachlan Galvin grubber rebounded off a Manly defender and Latu Fainu swooped on the loose ball to score
Galvin then came up with a kick for Solomona Faataape to score and the Tigers had Manly on the rack at 30-16 with 21 minutes to play
The Sea Eagles started the long haul back when Tom Trbojevic took the ball one off the ruck from close range and powered over for his second try of the night to make it 30-22
A high shot by Corey Waddell saw him become the third Manly player sent to the bin with 14 minutes to play before Luke Brooks and Olakau'atu combined superbly to put Tom Trbojevic in for his third try and the margin was back to just four points
With Manly coming hard and looking certain to draw level
a pair of mistakes by Saab proved costly as the Tigers went to the other end and iced the upset of the season when Samuela Fainu crossed wide out
Wests Tigers now join the Eels on 16 competition points and have given themselves a huge opportunity to avoid a third consecutive wooden spoon

A woman has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after CareFlight was called to Manly Vale
NSW Police and NSW Ambulance were called to a report of a traffic incident at Condamine Street
they were told that a white 2016 Toyota HiAce van that is modified for disability transport had braked suddenly
causing one of the passengers to be injured
The injured passenger was an 82-year-old woman
who was reportedly unrestrained at the time of the sudden braking
She had been sitting at the rear of the vehicle and flung forward around 2m
Four NSW Ambulance crews responded to Manly Vale
a Special Operations Paramedic and NSW Ambulance Inspector Ronnie Mawhinney
Paramedics found the elderly woman had gone into cardiac arrest
and her heart had stopped beating completely
Rescuers commenced CPR on the woman and the CareFlight Rescue Helicopter was tasked just after 10.45am
The helicopter landing site was secured by officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command
who brought the CareFlight specialist doctor and critical care paramedic directly to Condamine Street to assist with the woman’s treatment
The CareFlight medical team and NSW Ambulance paramedics were able to resuscitate the woman
they departed by road in an Intensive Care ambulance
with a green-light corridor and police escort to Royal North Shore Hospital
they were forced to pull over for further emergency medical intervention
The incident closed one lane of traffic northbound on Condamine Street
resulting in heavy traffic back through the Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation toward Seaforth until emergency services and the Toyota HiAce involved could be moved from the road just after 11.30am
CareFlight is an aeromedical charity with a mission to save lives, speed recovery and serve the community. They are funded by the generosity of the community and local businesses. If you can support their life-saving work, please donate now

Manly’s finals hopes are suddenly on life support – and if the loss to the Wests Tigers was not bad enough, they could be without three forwards next week because of suspension.
The Tigers caused one of the great boilovers at a rocking Leichhardt Oval on Thursday night to triumph 34-26.
The triumph not only moved them level with Parramatta for the time being, it capped a memorable 24 hours for coach Benji Marshall who was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame on Wednesday night.
Manly only needed to win to secure themselves a spot in the finals.
They now meet Canterbury and Cronulla in the final fortnight, and, all of a sudden, risk missing September football for the fourth time in five seasons.
Haumole Olakau’atu was one of three players sin-binned. His offence was a high shot on fullback Heath Mason.
Olakau’atu was given a timeout as teammate Ethan Bullemor was himself returning from the bin just after the break.

Later, Corey Waddell was binned for collecting Solomon Alaimalo high, even though most fans at the ground and commentators believed Taniela Paseka was the chief culprit.
Paseka will also be sweating on avoiding any charges from the match review committee.
As well as for their ill-discipline, Manly coach Anthony Seibold will be unhappy with the way his side looked after the ball when they had it.
“You have to give the Tigers credit,” Seibold said.
“We were outplayed, and our discipline let us down. We started really well, we made some fundamental errors. I can handle the errors at the end of the game because we were chasing the game. But we got what we deserved.”
The night proved a horrible homecoming for former favourite son Luke Brooks who was booed for most of the evening.
He kicked out on the full at half-time and spilled the ball with nobody around him in the 36th minute.
If Tigers rookie five-eighth Lachie Galvin wasn’t the best player on the field, Sea Eagles fullback Tom Trbojevic would have been.
He scored three tries and posed a threat every time he ran the ball.
Manly, with Trbojevic, his brother Jake, Daly Cherry-Evans, Olakau’atu and Brooks, need to find more over the next two weeks. Missing the finals this late in the season will be a fail.
The Tigers have the bye before hosting Parramatta.
Marshall said of finishing the year with a rare third straight win: “We’re not happy finishing 16th or 17th. We want to be higher than that. But we accept where we are, you have to identify what you need [to do] to move forward, and we’re doing that.
“You need to celebrate the wins like tonight. It’s our sixth win of the season, and we need to enjoy that.”

You could put Archimedes, Plato and Pythagoras in a room, show them that game and ask them to explain it. I don’t reckon they could. They’d give you some other good ideas, but that’d be it.
That was as strange a match as we’ve seen this year. Manly were great early, then terrible, only to be good again late. In the end, spending 30 of the 80 minutes a man down probably proved the difference.
Wests Tigers have somehow won the match. Samuela Fainu scores in the final minute to seal the deal. Tigers win 34-26.
Is that it for Manly? Jason Saab make a shocking error at dummy half just as Manly look like mounting a raid on the Tigers’ line.
Then, following an attacking raid, he drops the ball again, this time in open space. If he’d caught that pass (he should have), you’d have backed him to score. Two minutes remain.
The Tigers aren’t going to blow this, are they? Tommy Turbo has just scored his third of the night and the margin is now four points. Manly only have 12 men on the field (for the third time tonight) but somehow they are a chance. Believe me, this be real. Tigers lead 30-26 after 71 minutes.
Corey Wadell becomes the third Sea Eagle to be sent to the sin-bin. He charged out of the line and hit his opponent high. If it wasn’t him, fellow Sea Eagle Taniela Paseka could almost have gone to the bin for his contact. Ever since the 24-minute mark of the first half, these have been bad areas for the Sea Eagles. Good news for the teams around them in the top eight, ordinary for them. Tigers lead 30-22 after 67 minutes
After Manly looked like they’d remembered what they’re supposed to be doing for a few minutes, Tom Trbojevic relied in a simple charge at the line and it worked. They now trail by eight points and strangely, their all of a sudden looks like they have enough time. Wests Tigers lead 30-22 after 62 minutes

Wests Tigers lead 30-22 after 62 minutes

charming farmer’s markets and affordable waterfront homes have helped the median house price of one Brisbane suburb soar almost 50 per cent in just a year
The bayside suburb of Manly saw its median price climb a colossal 45.2 per cent to a record $1,597,500 in the year to June – the highest jump of any suburb in the country – according to the latest Domain House Price Report
The Sunshine Coast’s Warana earned the silver gong after its house prices shot up 43.6 per cent to a median of $1,292,500
North Plympton in Adelaide Metro West was the third-best performer
with house prices rising 43.5 per cent to $877,500
By comparison, the median house price across Brisbane increased 16.9 per cent to $976,464 over the same period
So what’s behind the recent explosive growth in Manly
Raine and Horne Wynnym Manly director Margaret Vote credits a maturation of the suburb that’s more akin to a renaissance, alongside a surge in cashed-up migrants from one inner-city Brisbane pocket.
“What we have seen is a significant shift in buyers’ perceptions about the bayside in general, and the largest part of that shift has come from Bulimba,” she said.
Interest rates in Australia: Why they’re so high, and are they going down or up in 2024?
Where is Phillip Island, home of The Block 2024?
Tasmania’s freezing streak: How the coldest region in Australia keeps its property market alive in the depths of winter
“When COVID hit, people living there suddenly didn’t have to get to the city every day and they realised they could do anything from a proximity” and turned to Manly.
Vote said house prices in coveted waterfront spots soared from the high $1 million mark to a milestone of $4 million in the space of a year
Ray White Bulimba principal Brandon Wortley said increased infrastructure and a recent wave of top eateries have been the winning ingredients for Bulimba, Hawthorne and Balmoral downsizers ditching their inner-city waterfront lifestyles for a quieter yet cosmopolitan bayside vibe.
“They are selling the big family home, and they still want the waterside lifestyle, but they don’t want to move to the coast and they want to be in striking distance of the city,” he said. “And the water is a bit bluer at Manly.
“Then you’ve got things like the local markets – and they are just pumping out there on the weekend now. There are good cafes too, and a bit of synergy from the Bulimba standpoint.”
2 Baths3 ParkingView listing Wortley said The Manly Boathouse – an old sailing clubhouse turned into an Instagrammable seafood restaurant in 2021 – was another major feather in the suburb’s cap.
It was those reasons and more that lured Phil Davies and his wife Katherine Mellor to nearby Wynnum in January this year.
The couple offloaded their Balmoral home for $2.4 million to make the Bayside migration in a move Davies said was partly for the lifestyle, and partly because a community of friends already awaited them.
“We are both triathletes and we have a lot of friends and training buddies who live in the area … but also we just like the lifestyle,” he said.
“You’ve got the Manly Harbour Boat Club and coffee shops like Cooper’s and then there’s the Esplanade, which is so nice for walking and running.
While the couple had planned to buy an established home, Davies said low stock levels and fierce competition forced them to buy a block of land at Cedar Street instead and then rent a three-bedroom house for $750 a week nearby.
3 Baths5 ParkingView listing According to the latest Domain Rent Report
the median asking rent for a house in Manly is now $795 a week after rising 22.3 per cent in a year
Todd Gerhardt from NGU Real Estate South East said price growth across all suburban sectors would continue, and added that the suburb’s real estate had long been prime for a renaissance.
“You’re on the water and yet you’re 17 kilometres to the CBD,” he said. “So Manly was always going to take off and for interstate buyers; they look at waterfront suburbs first.
“This is what happened in Redcliffe and the same thing is happening with Manly and Wynnum.”
Gerhardt added that neighbouring suburbs were already capitalising from the flow-on effect, with buyer demand rising for Wellington Point, Thorneside, Wakerley and Birkdale.

Anxious parents rushed to Manly West Public School this afternoon after reports spread of students burned in an ‘explosion’
Shortly after 1.00pm this afternoon (Monday
emergency services rushed to the front entrance of Manly West Public School at Hill Street
following reports a number of Year 5 primary students had suffered burns injuries in an incident involving a flammable material
Around two dozen emergency services crews responded to the scene
including eight NSW Ambulance crews and three NSW Ambulance Inspectors

anxious parents gathered at the school gates
waiting for news of their children and what had happened
According to Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry
they responded to reports of an ‘explosion’ at the school as part of a science experiment being held outdoors
Supt Dewberry said the injuries suffered appear to be flash burns as a result of a chemical reaction that ran out of control as a result of strong wind
As the multiple NSW Ambulance crews reached the school
they were staged in the playground (main image)
while the patients were assessed and triaged by Inspector Marks
A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said that a total of twelve people were involved in the incident
eleven children and one adult male who is the teacher
A NSW Police spokesperson said the injured children were aged around ten-years-old
students who had been evacuated to a safe location were able to return to their classrooms just after 2.00pm
NSW Ambulance said that of the eleven students who were injured
nine suffered superficial burns injuries and were not seriously hurt
Two students suffered serious burns injuries to their chest and face
and were taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead
the other by CareFlight (image below) in a stable condition
The remaining nine injured children were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital
all in a stable condition with superficial burns
The teacher was also taken to Northern Beaches Hospital in a stable condition
NSW Ambulance Acting Superintendent Phil Templeman praised the initial response from school staff and said fortunately most of the students had not been badly injured
“We received multiple Triple Zero calls reporting that a number of children had sustained burns during a science experiment
Today’s high winds have impacted the experiment and blown some of the materials around
“The children have sustained burns to the upper body
the majority of the students were not badly injured
Two children sustained serious burns to the chest and face and were treated by specialist medical teams from both the CareFlight and Toll Ambulance Rescue helicopters
“This was a huge response by NSW Ambulance to ensure that these children received urgent medical treatment within minutes of the incident occurring
two Inspectors and two specialist medical teams
“I’d also like to recognise the staff from the school
who managed this incident particularly well
offering immediate support to emergency crews and ensuring injured patients were moved to an area where we could treat them,” said Act Supt Templeman
Most emergency services personnel were complete at the school just after 3.15pm
however officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command remained on scene to conduct further inquiries
Member for Manly James Griffin said he was monitoring the situation with NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell and support would be offered to the school
“I have this afternoon spoken with Manly West Public School Principal Ms Organ and offered my total support to the school community
