Margate is for sale with LJ Hooker Pinnacle Property Managers of building in which Emin owns a flat want to replace windows but opponents say they are a key feature The 18-storey Arlington House in Margate has long been considered a brutalist masterpiece It inspired the English rock band Hawkwind’s song High Rise and recently featured in Sam Mendes’s Bafta-nominated film Empire of Light which sits on Margate seafront next to the railway station and the amusement park Dreamland has become the cause of a bitter dispute among local people One of the UK’s most prominent artists, Tracey Emin is among hundreds of people protesting against the building management’s proposed changes to the tower’s original windows which have been in place since its opening in December 1963 the architectural preservation charity the Twentieth Century Society and 200 others have lodged objections with Thanet district council They say changes will destroy the architectural character of the block reduce views of the coast from inside and irrevocably ruin the authenticity of the building “Arlington House is a historic building in Margate at the time of its construction Margate was booming and it was an emblem of the future,” Emin said “In the last few decades it’s been left to go to rack and ruin without care or respect for its monumental brutalist architecture If this building were in any European town or city it would have been protected from the beginning It should be listed and renovated back to its original beauty.” Emin, who was nominated for the Turner prize, opened Tracey Emin Studios in Margate last year and said Arlington House’s leaseholders “understood this responsibility” when taking on the building and should not get away with “replacing the original windows with bulky She added: “As a flat owner in Arlington House I’m totally opposed to their proposal In short these are the wrong windows for this building.” Freshwater says the replacement window scheme should have a positive impact on people who live in the building and the area as a whole The company says the window replacements are part of a wider repair and refurbishment scheme that when completed will help restore the prominent building Freshwater has said the difference between the existing and new windows is “minimal” and will not alter the heritage and legacy of the building But people who live in the block say the plans will ruin the aesthetic of the 142-flat building and its view One person said planners wanted to remove the original sliding windows and replace them with “tilt and turn” ones with thicker frames This would involve the window frame being made five times thicker It is also understood that the lease structure in the building means that not all the windows will be changed which will lead to a patchwork of window types Those protesting say no elevations of the proposal have been submitted for planning so it is impossible to understand what the building will look like and blame “London hipsters” for flocking to Margate and the tower and preventing essential modernisation Lyndon Brand, 60, told KentOnline the windows are “just terrible the heat distorts the frames and cracks the glass The slightly thicker frames are a small price to pay Another person in the block said her heating bill was “astronomically” expensive Arlington House was designed by the architect Russell Diplock who also designed the Brighton Centre and nearby Churchill Square and was initially advertised as “Britain’s first ‘park and buy’ shopping centre with luxury flats” The sides of the building have a wave-like design which provides every flat with inland and sea views the commercial section is vacant after a proposal to redevelop it into a Tesco store was unsuccessful Thanet district council said: “While we do not comment on individual planning applications each one is considered on its own merits and takes into account feedback from the public and relevant bodies “All comments received in relation to this application can be viewed on our planning portal The planning committee will be provided with a summary of the comments received so that they can be fully considered when the application is determined.” This article was amended on 17 September 2024 An earlier version said that Tracey Emin had won the Turner Prize; in fact she was nominated but did not Martial Godo is proof of his own declaration, having moved directly from Margate FC to Fulham in March 2022 The forward's transfer instantly elevated Godo through six tiers of the English football pyramid as he swapped the Isthmian League at level seven for the Premier League an annual celebration of the football pyramid Godo returned to his previous club where he was reunited with his former team-mate "It was a great experience for me and it made me into who I am today," Godo told Fulham's official website, speaking about his stint at Margate from a seat inside their Hartsdown Park ground. "It plays a big part in how I play today as well. There are a lot of things that you learn in a changing room, on the pitch as well with the physicality and the tactics. "It's much more raw. But it's about doing anything that you need to do to get the three points and move up the league." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fulham Football Club (@fulhamfc) Greenhalgh explained how Godo's journey to Fulham began in non-league football came and trialled at Dartford [where I was playing at the time] It was an obvious yes for us because he just had a spark," said Greenhalgh we managed to get him down here at Margate where he was playing for the [Dartford] Academy still on a Wednesday and playing here for Margate on a Saturday when he first came on for us and then from there I think that was because of how much he wanted it and how much he still wants it now because we can still see that in his game now." Greenhalgh recalled how scouts from several Premier League clubs came to watch Godo in non-league action "I think non-league is just an absolute transfer window," he added. "When Martial started playing really well and getting his name out there, you were rocking up to Margate and suddenly there was Fulham there, Arsenal there and Manchester City there." Godo played 22 matches for Margate before making his big move to Fulham, initially going into the club's Premier League 2 side. Marco Silva handed him his senior debut in the EFL Cup against Crawley Town in August 2022 "I don't know if people know this but I think I even cried the next day," Godo revealed "It was a surreal moment because it was like everything I had been working for when I was at Margate It was the icing on the cake for me and my family as well." The pacey forward gained more senior experience in 2022/23 during a loan spell at Wigan Athletic where he registered four goals and four assists in 34 League One appearances To date, Godo has featured in five first-team matches for Fulham and, after signing a new contract at Craven Cottage last September he remains grateful for the platform that Margate gave him "Going into men's football [with Margate] from academy football [with Dartford] the physicality taught me to ride out a challenge "I think what makes non-league special to me is the authenticity from the pitches - you could be playing on mud or 4G - to the changing rooms has got to keep believing in themselves and trust the process." epitome of a high-quality one so appealing it even draws in those from well outside the neighbourhood To learn more about Bottega Caruso’s journey – and the positive impact it’s having on the Margate community – we spoke to Simona and Harry about all about their story so far With the restaurant still pleasing Margate’s hungry diners what’s next for Bottega Caruso seems an obvious parting question Alongside an increased focus on wine – including the launch of a wine import company and the continuation of both their wine bar La Cantina and the LOW Margate wine festival – Harry says that he and Simona’s focus will be on “keeping Bottega thriving growing the Perfect Place to Grow and being loving parents” Andrew Young is The MICHELIN Guide's Restaurant & Travel Editor for the UK and Republic Fabulous personal news report from Oli on his 500th milestone then some additional information about our event underneath... ============================================================= along with many friends I have made along the way Annoyingly the weather was miserable with torrential rain (but no wind) this did not stop me and the 206 other runners I offered to pace a 34-minute parkrun thinking that I could jog along in my Sunday best and support my long-suffering wife to get a PB it transpired that she was too busy listening to loud banging tunes (apparently she can’t run without them!) so the conversation was minimal Last week Anna (The Banner!) asked me to write a bit about my parkrun journey and what it means to me so this gave me time to reflect on my parkruns over the years… It was the 24th November 2012 when I found myself standing on the start line of my first ever parkrun at Whitstable wondering what on earth I was doing As someone who would regularly skive off cross country at school and share a fag with the other dedicated non-athletes 30 minutes or so later it’s only fair to say I was converted so I promised myself that if I only did one exercise activity a week It's hard to summarise the next twelve years into a few paragraphs but for me parkrun is all about the people; whether they run volunteer or come to support their family and friends Once Dennis had started up parkrun at Margate in May 2013 I met lots of local runners and ended up joining the best running club in the world (Thanet Road Runners!) It’s here I should warn new park runners to be careful as 53 marathons including a couple of 100K ultras hypothermia in the Romanian mountains and third degree sunburn in the Moroccan desert will testify how additive this running lark can be 500 is a stupid amount of parkruns to do and without all the people listed below it certainly wouldn’t have been possible I would like to say thank you to everyone who has volunteered over my parkrun journey Anyone who stands out there in the wind and rain is the true hero There are some real legends here at Margate that deserve a special mention Dennis and his Mum who set up Margate parkrun and stuck with it even when we were only getting 25 runners often sacrificing her own runs to step in when we were short of volunteers in the early days Anna (The Banner!) who is always here pinning banners on people and welcoming visitors and new runners Without her today I would have been at the back hoping no one had noticed it was my 500th parkrun the two Johns who have volunteered a staggering 997 times between them- They are true legends and Doreen who martials at ‘Brian’s bench’ every week whether rain or shine It is also worth mentioning Sharon and Lee from Margate Junior parkrun who continue to support the local children in our community I know they would love to see you if you have half an hour spare on a Sunday morning  Jay Bailey - we have been pretty much tied on runs on our way to 500 so I would like to say thanks to him for letting me get there first It’s the least he could do as I let him beat me every week thanks to everyone for coming today – I look forward to seeing you at my 501st parkrun ================================================================== Chris Brown was celebrating a 25th milestone and pacing at 25 (great job pacing) His daughter Bethany helped volunteer on the finish line and supported him and others over the finish with the high five hand She also kindly shared this with another young supporter Sofia As Kay said it has her taken a while to get here with grandaughter Sofia on the finish line and son Jay (after he was our first finisher) It was also tutu week = 22 in the event date (next one 22nd March) Good to see a few this week (any excuse for me to dress up) and Scot shared his spare one with Royston we also had a boomerang B2 nicknamed “R2B2” arrive at our parkrun with regular Michael Clarricoats after he visited Plymouth last week After R2B2 had a photo taken with an "It's all about me" banner of course!) Michael handed it over to another of our regulars Bryan Baird who will be taking it to Oslo parkrun on the 1st March 2025 this is the Boomerang background...On June 15th 2024 10 Boomerangs started their journeys by running they left Australia the following week and they were handed out at Singapore to a “boomeranger” to pass on to another parkrun with the hope that eventually they all come home Thank you to our volunteers - wonderful as ever Thank you to all our visitors who joined us today and well done to all those doing their first ever parkrun / parkwalk today.  Some of you maybe  in the photos below - you will notice a theme with Thanet Roadrunners present to support Oli Fantastic to see the Hawkins family (and friends) with us this week Thank you to Vic Croucher for several of the photos above. With further information on all present today, please see the results at Margate parkrun Results Page and the data below: If you would like to volunteer, do email in with your barcode to margate@parkrun.com or note your details on the clipboard by the scanners Let us know if you are flexible about which role you do (and if you need advice on any) Please note we are looking to include 2 tail walkers for future events where we have offers - so do pop your name down - and remember you get a volunteer token and event token - as well as the satisfaction you made sure everyone got back okay and can help help bring the posts back Volunteers meet at 8.45 and we usually need you till 10.15 but if you need to go before, do say and we can work out the role. Further information can be found at volunteer | Margate parkrun. future roster page For pacers - this is the last Saturday of the month.  NEXT ONE 22ND FEB! You can offer to do anything from 19 mins to 55. Email margate@parkrun.com with a time you want Refreshments after – Palm Bay Cafe is still outside only and no access to a toilet due to a lack of a local suitable cafe have been going to Taddy's Barn Tea Room 2 miles from our event (at Taddy’s garden centre and you will find several of our regulars at Margate Coffee Shed including Devonshire Gardens and Hodge’s gap with a few minutes walk to the start but parking in the bowls centre may get you a fine Please avoid the car spaces outside the bus shelter/start of parkrun so we can use these for volunteers who may need to go out on the course before or during the event News report – if you ever want to write this or provide us some information for it, we'd love your input.  Email margate@parkrun.com  and John will put you on the rota Don’t worry if Anna's name is there (more than happy for someone else to do it) A man was flown to hospital after being hit by a car in Margate Kent Police were called to Canterbury Road Once at the scene officers found a man in his 30s was hit by a car on the road The man was flown to a London hospital for treatment Kent Police have confirmed his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening The driver of the vehicle did not stop and the scene and officers are carrying out a number of enquiries to identify the driver of the vehicle involved or who has private CCTV or dashcam footage which might assist officers Anyone with information can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or complete their online form Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.
