Google is proposing to land two new subsea cables outside of designated protection zones in Sydney
owing to “congestion” within those zones
The company, through its “registered licence carrier company Perch Infrastructure”, has applied to the NSW government for permission to land the cables at Maroubra Beach in Sydney’s south. The application was first reported by CommsDay.
It is also separately proposing that the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) extend the boundary of the existing southern Sydney cable protection zone
Google is building two cables under its Pacific Connect Initiative - Tabua and Honomoana - that will connect “Australia to the United States of America (US)
A submission [pdf] to NSW planning authorities notes that there are currently 12 subsea cables that land in the protection zones in Sydney
subsea cables typically land in the northern or southern Sydney cable protection zones,” the submission states
congestion in these areas has required telecommunication providers to seek alternative sites
"Given the increasing congestion in Sydney’s protection zones
routing the cable outside of these areas would alleviate pressure
The company added that a "route landing at Maroubra offers operational redundancy and address the growing demands for connectivity."
The company is proposing to install two cables “from two cable conduits ‘punch out points’ located approximately one kilometre offshore”.
“From the ‘punch out points’
the cables would either be buried below the seabed or laid on the seabed (or a combination of these) out to the NSW three nautical mile (5.56 kilometre) coastal waters limit,” the submission states

In Leichhardt, a double-fronted Federation home sold for $4,775,000. The beautifully presented house at 18 Marlborough Street had a traditional facade and comfortable and modern revamp inside.
Five upsizing families registered to bid on the four-bedroom family home. Four made offers and three of the interested parties were already living in Leichhardt.
3 Baths3 ParkingView listing Bidding opened at $4.4 million, and it sold under the hammer for $275,000 more than its $4.5 million reserve.
Highland Inner West agent Yianni Sclavos said the initial guide of $4.2 million was raised to a range of $4.5 million to $4.7 million after strong interest during the campaign.
“It’s [within] walking distance to all the shops, groceries, cafes [and] bus stops nearby as well,” he said.
Sclavos said interest rate cuts had not made much difference yet. “I feel like there’s a lot of buyers still out there waiting for more drops before doing anything and taking action.”
The buyer owns a business close to the home. The vendor planned to relocate to Concord.
The address last traded for $1.53 million in 2013, records show.
Ray White Group chief economist Nerida Conisbee said Sydney’s clearance rate of 68.9 per cent was fairly strong.
“It’s reflective of the interest rate cut, and that buyers are feeling more confident, but it’s not 70-plus. That tends to be the super strong market,” she said.
She said while the clearance rate was similar to this time last year, “the big challenge at the moment, which we didn’t have last year, is the high level of economic uncertainty”.
Conisbee’s outlook for the year was still positive, if uncertain.

Whale watching season is officially here. Here are the best places to see the magnificent creatures, from beaches to national parks and more.
Cooler weather means one thing: the whales are back. Each year from May to November, more than 40,000 humpback and southern right whales make their way along Sydney’s coastline as they migrate between Antarctica and the Pacific. Humpback whales are by far the most common visitors in our waters, but if you’re lucky, you might also spot orcas, blue whales, or minke whales. So grab your woollies and get your camera ready — here are 9 of the very best whale watching spots in Sydney.

From the lighthouse — perched 100 metres above sea level — you’ll have a great vantage point for spotting whales
The return walk takes about 30 minutes and requires a moderate level of fitness
and the Insta-famous Hornby Lighthouse — and it’s also a prime spot for whale watching during the winter months

perhaps the most popular of them being the top of the cliffs at Ben Buckler
You can also spot the gentle mammals on the horizon along the Federation Cliff Walk or from the lookout but you’ll need to get as high as possible for the best vantage points
La Perouse has it all — the iconic Bare Island Fort
and peaceful bushwalks scattered throughout the area
It’s also an underrated spot for whale watching
The Cape Banks walking track offers sweeping views over Botany Bay and a chance to spot migrating whales
Malabar Headland National Park delivers rugged bushwalks

Stroll the Boora Point or Western Escarpment walking tracks and keep your eyes peeled on the horizon — this wild

NSW premier Chris Minns says police will track down people behind Maroubra attack and foreshadows new anti-hatred laws
More detectives will be assigned to track down the perpetrators of a spate of antisemitic attacks in Sydney after a childcare centre was set alight and targeted with graffiti overnight

Albanese said on Tuesday: “This is something that people in this great multicultural city of Sydney should never wake up to. This is a place for children and families and it should never have been denigrated by this despicable and horrifying crime.”

Penny Sharpe says ‘mystery’ debris sent for testing and beaches not closed as there were so few balls
More ball-shaped debris has washed ashore at Sydney’s Bondi, Coogee, Maroubra and Cronulla beaches, the New South Wales government has confirmed.
The office of the acting premier, Penny Sharpe, told Guardian Australia on Wednesday that “small numbers of balls” – some only pea-sized – had washed up on the four beaches in the past few days.
These balls had been cleaned up and sent for testing and, as there were so few pieces, none of the beaches had been closed, Sharpe’s office said.
Read moreA spokesperson for Randwick council said it had inspected all beaches in the area after it was alerted to ball-shaped debris on South Maroubra and South Coogee beaches
“An inspection of all beaches in the area on Monday morning found only a small number of balls at South Coogee,” they said
“Council staff found none of the material on Randwick City beaches during morning inspections on Tuesday or Wednesday and all beaches in the area remain open.”
They said council staff were inspecting the beaches daily
The Sutherland and Waverley councils were contacted for comment
Dee Why and South Curl Curl beaches in Sydney’s north remained closed on Wednesday after marble-sized “grease balls” were discovered on nine beaches in the area on Tuesday
The Northern Beaches council said it had reopened Queenscliff
North Steyne and North Narrabeen beaches on Wednesday morning
Sydney’s beaches have been plagued by debris balls in recent months but the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Sydney Water and the government maintain they cannot work out where they are coming from
Addressing the media on Wednesday afternoon
Sharpe confirmed an EPA investigation was ongoing
while the government had also been working with various agencies as to whether there had been “pollution events” – but none had been identified

Photograph: Northern Beaches council“This is a phenomenon that’s not being seen anywhere else in the world,” she said
but they’re different depending on the beach.”
Sharpe said she had “full confidence” in the EPA
but I’m not going to put the blame at the feet of the EPA here,” she said
“This is an odd situation that remains a mystery that we’re getting to the bottom of.”
Thousands of pieces of spherical debris washed up on many eastern suburbs beaches
Those balls were initially widely reported to be “tar balls” comprising crude oil until testing coordinated with the EPA revealed they were consistent with human-generated waste – or “likely lumps of fatberg”
More ball-shaped debris washed up in Kiama in November, before green, grey and black balls washed up on Silver beach at Kurnell
The EPA said on Tuesday the balls that washed up on Sydney’s eastern suburbs beaches in October were found to consist mostly of fatty acids and petroleum hydrocarbons
But the regulator said testing could not “pinpoint a source” or identify what caused them to form
because “there was no source sample available for comparison”
The EPA said analysis of the balls that washed up in Kiama found they had a similar composition to those that washed up on the eastern beaches and it was “still awaiting” the final results of the Kurnell debris

An antisemitic attack on a childcare centre in Sydney’s east has been labelled “evil” and a potential act of terror after the building was set alight and graffitied with an offensive slogan
prompting furious community leaders to warn it was a “wake-up call” and a prelude to further violence
Premier Chris Minns has vowed to round up the “bastards” who torched the Only About Children childcare centre on Storey Street in Maroubra just before 1am on Tuesday in the latest antisemitic attack to blight Sydney
Video of the centre ablaze showed the words “f--- the Jews” sprayed in black paint on a wall
It’s unclear whether the multifaith facility was the intended target of the antisemitic attack
It was owned by an eastern suburbs Jewish family until 2023
and it is situated near Maroubra Synagogue and Mount Sinai College – an Orthodox Jewish school and preschool

He said police would consider designating the incident as a terrorist offence if extra resources and power were needed to investigate it

Shane Tucker has not been charged over the death of Christine Dawson
who was found dead with head injuries in the ground-floor Astoria Circuit unit in Maroubra on Monday

The 50-year-old called emergency services and police arrested him at the scene for breaching an AVO involving another woman
known by the initials HM for legal reasons
to determine what caused the death of the New Zealand-born grandmother
Vision from the scene on Monday showed specialist forensics investigators combing through rubbish bins at the unit block
The Herald can reveal Tucker was released on parole in August for bashing Dawson in the apartment
Waverley Local court in June heard Dawson and Tucker had been in a relationship for years and had no children or AVOs

But Dawson’s sister had confronted Tucker at his Astoria Circuit apartment and told him to get out of Dawson’s life
Tucker was furious and punched out a window before turning on Dawson
hitting and kicking her in the head repeatedly
The court heard unemployed Tucker was well known to police
The magistrate sentenced Tucker to nine months in prison for his attack on Dawson
That order prohibited Tucker from assaulting
as well as stopping him from contacting her while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs
Dawson’s problems with alcohol and drugs were such that the magistrate deemed his “special circumstances”
Tucker was released from prison in early August
The case is likely to reignite debate about protections for domestic violence victims
The NSW government this year strengthened bail laws for domestic violence offenders after the death of Molly Ticehurst
Alleged abusers will be required to wear electronic monitoring bracelets on bail
Tucker did not appear at Waverley Local Court after breaching the AVO protecting HM
Tucker allegedly approached HM as she stood on the intersection of Anzac Road in Maroubra at 10am on Monday
where he told her something had happened to Dawson
It’s alleged the pair travelled by bus to his Astoria Circuit home
It was then that emergency services were called
and Tucker will reappear in the same court next week

changing its unsolved squares to a solved iteration of the puzzle
The Sun-Herald has confirmed with the cube’s original artists
that they were also responsible for “solving” the cube
A motion from Labor councillor Dylan Parker
requests the council engage in community consultation to determine whether the cube should be repainted its original “unsolved” colours or kept in its new state
council staff will report the results by April
it’s local artists who’ve made an intervention in a way that’s whimsical and interesting.”
and it has taken on a folkloric status in the community since then,” Parker said
adding that there had been “a large amount” of community feedback on the new design

The Maroubra Rubik’s Cube – also known as the “Maroubrik’s Cube” and listed as “the Big Rubik’s Cube” on Google Maps – was first painted by two local artists in 2008
The paint on the unsolved cube has been freshened up several times by the council and
a lifelong local who runs the Maroubra Community Facebook and Instagram accounts
said most people in the area wanted the cube returned to its previous unsolved state
A poll of her 11,000 Instagram followers found 88 per cent of respondents wanted to see the cube again unsolved
In another survey of about 470 of her Facebook followers
but I don’t mind as long as [the cube] is there,” Ely said

Ely said changes to the cube over the years – including a pastel paint job in 2020
slip-on covers that temporarily turned it into a lamington
a solved cube – had attracted much attention among locals

In an interview with the ABC in December
Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch said she believed the artwork should be left solved to respect the artists’ intentions
Veitch said she would respect the artists’ wishes either way
and a community consultation would take their views into account
that’s part of the interest and appeal and what makes the artwork relevant: It’s not a council artwork
One of the artists who painted the cube in 2008 and again last year said they were aware the public preferred the previous design and were happy for the community to decide its future direction
“I liked the way the mayor accepted the change
we’re happy with the continued change of it,” they said
Dylan Parker would not be drawn on what he thought should happen to the cube
but the beauty of it is it’s bigger than me
