Mount Wachusett Community College has introduced a new mascot
Monty made his first appearance April 29 at a mascot reveal party
Students gathered to welcome Monty with food and entertainment
Monty is a revamped version of the previous mascot
a transformation which modernizes and improves the connection of the mascot's story and imagery to better represent the community
the decision was made to give the mascot a fresh new identity that resonates with the growing culture and pride at MWCC
“Monty is a name that embodies the heart of our community and the strength of our values,” said James Vander Hooven
“The change reflects our commitment to creating a positive and engaging environment for our students and community members
pride and the adventurous spirit we foster here at MWCC.”
“The introduction of Monty marks an exciting new chapter for MWCC,” said Stephanie England
“This mascot rebrand was the result of months of planning
collaboration and creative development — driven by student feedback and a strong desire to strengthen our campus identity
Monty is more than just a new face; he symbolizes the energy
pride and unity that defines the MWCC community
We’re confident he will play a vital role in bringing our students together through events
Keep an eye out for Monty at upcoming events
including the Grad Bash on May 5 and at future college events

Rum’un growls like Nosferatu and sports fur made from recycled school polo shirts
A “cheeky” Tasmanian devil that poos out footballs
growls like Nosferatu and is covered in papier-mache-like recycled fur has been unveiled as the new mascot of the state’s long-awaited AFL team
Rum’un, which translates to Tasmanian slang for “an odd or eccentric person; a scallywag, or someone cheeky” in the Macquarie Dictionary, made his debut as the Tasmania Devils’ latest recruit at an event on Tuesday evening
He sashayed down the catwalk at Hobart’s Theatre Royal with a slow run-up before bending down and emitting a “Rum’un” roar
“I’ve got a very sneaking suspicion that this move is going to catch on,” the host
as the Devil launched into side-stepping dance to the backing of drums
Sign up for Guardian Australia’s breaking news email
Rum’un was developed in partnership with the Tasmania-based Terrapin Puppet Theatre and input from schoolchildren across the island
His fur is made from recycled school polo shirts
Lead maker Bryony Anderson said it was an “unusual pairing” for Terrapin Puppet Theatre but the club was “game to do it differently”
The nine-month long process started with a visit to a local wildlife sanctuary
their threat to survival and what makes the animal unique
Anderson then visited 10 schools with green uniforms and received donations
which led to a week at a New Norfolk high school where students helped turn the items into strips of fur
It was a request from the students that Rum’un would do custom poos of the feathers or fur of opposing teams
“The team will go out with all the stories of the schools built in [to the mascot],” Anderson said
We were told ‘don’t make it look like the Wiggles’.”
there’s quite a few people that’ll be chuffed with that”
In coming weeks, Rum’un will embark on a tour across Tasmania, meeting communities across the island and representing the club before its planned AFL men’s debut in 2028

The Tasmania Football Club chief executive
said the new recruit would “be a great beacon of our club across the state”
“The creation of Rum’un reflects our club – uniquely Tasmanian
handcrafted and created with grit and determination representing our whole island,” he said
These characteristics are all true to the Tasmania Football Club
a club that represents our whole state and who does things our way.”
Social media users had a mixed reaction to Rum’un. “It’s a piñata,” one TikTok user commented on a video which showed the devil ingesting and excreting an AFL football
“That mascot is actually nightmare fuel,” another said
All the people cringing at it aren’t having fun
The release of the name and look of the mascot comes a year after the Tasmania FC revealed its club name and colours
The club has attracted 207,000 founding members before its AFL launch. On Tuesday, the Devils refreshed their $10 membership offer which attracted significant support last year

Insurance rebrands aren't traditionally the most exciting
but in recent years we've seen some challenger brands pop up
which have unusual and memorable identities
with its new look created by Bristol's Taxi Studio
YOLOH exists to help people get on with their lives
and not spend endless time filling out forms
You simply input you needs and then you get the best options and deals
The platform will also organise renewal for you so you don't need to worry about it
The brand itself hinges around the strapline: Insurance Dejumbled
which works not just as a slogan but a strategic and creative anchor to help YOLOH connect with the world
and the way the brand uses it to literally unjumble text is a nice touch
which helps guide customers through their journey
using hand signals to demystify complex insurance terms and concepts
friendly guide who brings warmth and accessibility to a traditionally uninspiring industry"
"We knew YOLOH needed an identity to bring its personality to life and what better way than a character
that’s how Andi was born," explains Martin Fresle
associate creative director of Taxi Studio
"A helping hand who could guide and provide reassurance
Andi’s animated hand signals are a metaphor for YOLOH’s whole promise: Dejumbling Insurance
to ensure people spend time living and not form-filling."
The brandmark aims to reflect the playful spirit of YOLOH while showing that it really does make life easier
which is another fun touch that really comes to life through YOLOH's videos and social assets
Colour-wise, navy is the main hue here, with Andi and the logo in striking aqua and yellow accents highlighting details. This feels fresh when compared to other insurance schemes, and is distinctive from other challenger brands like Marshmallow
Brand writer Nick Carson was brought on board to develop a "warm
Phrases like 'where your lease meets peace' to showcase insurance for Renters is just one example of language not normally seen on insurance platforms
"Securing seed funding was a pivotal moment for YOLOH
and our new brand identity played a key role in getting us there," explains YOLOH's CMO
"Taxi Studio didn’t just give us a brand
ownable story that helped investors instantly ‘get’ what we’re about
"In a market saturated with complexity and distrust
Insurance Dejumbled became our rallying cry
with funding secured and a distinctive new look
we’re ready to launch and make insurance simpler
What was the biggest challenge with this rebrand
"Rebranding YOLOH wasn’t just about looking different
it was about thinking differently," says Martin
"The insurance landscape is cluttered with complexity and anxiety
so our biggest challenge was cutting through that noise with clarity and character
We needed to create a brand that could instantly build trust
Our aim was to flip the sector on its head

The Cronulla Sharks and the South Sydney Rabbitohs NRL clubs have opened investigations after South Sydney mascot Charlie Gallico
was accused of punching a nine-year-old in the face during the Rabbitohs’ loss at Sharks Stadium on Saturday
The investigation was launched after the mother of the child posted on social media claiming Gallico
who she said was in shock after the incident
She has since been in contact with Sharks officials
who alerted the Rabbitohs and NRL of the allegation

The mother said her son had been reprimanded by a nearby security guard following the incident
and she said he had done nothing that might provoke any sort of hostility from Gallico
When contacted by the Herald on Sunday evening
Sharks chief executive Dino Mezzatesta said he had been made aware of the situation
and was yet to be briefed on the details of the incident
“The Sharks and Rabbitohs are working towards what’s happening
we are waiting for further advice as to what’s happened,” Mezzatesta said
“We’ll let the investigation take its course.”

From punches in the beak to inflatable hammer attacks
I’ve copped it every which way in my 19 years as ‘Hawka’
ya dickhead!” *THWACK* I’ve just been punched in my spongey beak by a preteen Collingwood fan
Yes, I’m wearing the Hawthorn FC mascot suit, dressed as Hudson “Hawka” Knights. Yes, I’m on level two of the MCG, deep in enemy territory sans minder (where did she get to?). And yes, the brown and gold are giving the Pies a touch-up. But there’s no need for this.
Do I retaliate? No. For two reasons. One, I’m not about to hit a young kid. Two, I’m especially not about to hit a girl, no matter how much she’s perpetuating the Magpie fan stereotype.
I get whisked into the Family Rooms to perform my duties. Kids are eating party pies, drinking soft drink and getting their faces painted.

Being a sporting mascot is an unpredictable side hustle that can be quite rough at times
We saw evidence of it last weekend in the NRL with Reggie the Rabbit
The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ mascot tipped over the edge when he gave a youngster a “don’t argue”
likely after enduring one too many hurtful sledges
still climbing into the cumbersome red and green costume at the ripe old age of 81
I dare say he’s the only octogenarian mascot in the world and it might be time for the Rabbitohs brains trust to suggest a passing of the baton
I’ve copped it every which way from opposition kids
The most full-on example was when I appeared at a clinic in Lilydale in 2008
the word “clinic” strikes fear into the heart of any veteran of the vocation
you’ll have a few kids sticking up for you
juvenile delinquents who smell blood in the water
some bright spark in charge of “activations” had approved 500 inflatable Bunnings hammers to give out to the tikes
flanked by one well-meaning but ultimately outnumbered “bodyguard”
walking over the lush green hills and on to the oval
as the eyes of 40 kids holding 40 mallets light up
“Get ‘immm,” one shouts as they go from a pack of eight-year-olds to a cackle of hyenas
After 20 seconds of getting clobbered I have to physically move them out of my way with scant help from my wrangler
Pretty happy there were no camera phones that day
taking refuge next to some stinky bins behind the club rooms
It’s agreed Hawka can take the last hour off
View image in fullscreenHawka and Hawkette watch Hawthorn play Essendon from the rooms earlier this season

where there were 16 different sets of fans and no real team to support
All 16 mascots emerge from the players’ race at half-time and make our way around the boundary to cheers and jeers
There’s always a good level of banter and camaraderie at AFL games but this crowd was particularly hostile. (Sidenote, I love shocking people as Hawka.) My standard jump-scare move is to wait until they’re not looking, leap onto the fence with my hands (wings?) and put my menacing face within an inch of theirs. Works every time.
Free weekly newsletterThe best of our sports journalism from the past seven days and a heads-up on the weekend’s action
The Legends Game was a different beast though. On this evening a cheeky rascal (I’m being nice) pitched himself over the fence and ripped my head clean off, the chinstrap chonking against my chin as I was unmasked. Kids shrieked. Mothers shielded their baby’s eyes. A crow cawed.
It took all my strength and a genuine tug-of-war to hoist myself over the fence, reach into the third row and wrest it back off him and three of his smartarse mates. There was no way I would’ve retrieved it if it had gone further into the crowd. I was already imagining a YouTube clip going viral the next day: “Keepings Off Mascot as Hawka Loses His Shit.”
I got my own back shortly after it was agreed the Clark Rubber mascot (no clue as to why he was there) would win the half-time mascots race. We were told to throw the race by play-wrestling, doing silly dances and running in slow motion instead of making a dash for the finish line.
Hawka might be nodding his giant head at the instructions but he has no intention of following them.
“Ready, set, GO!” shouts Dipper. Bang. I’m off. Dipper’s face goes from jolly to confused.
I’ve got many more stories of perilous run-ins including a ripper with Eddie McGuire but Hawka needs to keep a few secrets. I’m not even really meant to talk. All I ask on behalf of mascots worldwide is have a bit of fun with us but don’t go too far. Hawka will eat your head, just don’t punch him in his.

Literacy expert Robyn Cox says Tasmania's AFL mascot Rum'un should take care when using incorrect phonetic spelling and vowel combinations in social media posts, given the state's low literacy levels.
"I don't think it's going to hurt, but I don't think it's going to help," the University of Tasmania Professor of Literacy Education tells Ryk Goddard on Hobart Breakfast.
"[Rum'un] might want to just get a little bit of technical advice around getting those vowel, at least the vowel combinations correct, because they're the ones that are really tricky for kids."
The Tassie Devils' new mascot, Rum'un, posts on social media using incorrect phonetic spelling.(ABC News: Owain Stia James)
Ryk GoddardRobyn Cox, I'll ask you, yes, I mean, that's how plenty of Tasmanians say it. Should Rum'un also spell thing with a K?
Ryk GoddardThat's Tasmanian. Does that help, literacy?
Ryk GoddardYes, yes. Yeah. Is that problematic is my question or am I just being like a weird old fogey?
Robyn CoxWhat it might do is make them interested in the sounds and say, well, how should it be spelt? What should it look like? Does that help?
Ryk GoddardThis text says, what a great opportunity for Rum'un to be the mascot for a Tasmanian literacy program. We could track his progress and see the results.
Ryk GoddardSo that's a tiny tweak that could maybe just like, okay, we're going to see if we can find the creative agency in charge of this and just put that idea to them, Rum'un. And thank you for stepping into this highly contested territory.

Once upon a time, Sackboy was the golden child of PlayStation, becoming a mascot for the PlayStation brand in much the same way Sonic is associated with Sega, and Mario represents all things Nintendo. Now, however, as Sackboy hasn't starred in a PlayStation game since 2020's delightful Sackboy: A Big Adventure
it seems he's being sidelined to make room for more contemporary faces
"He is not Sackboy anymore… he is Sadboy now," teased another
While others lamented
"why can't Astro Bot and Sackboy coexist?"
"Sackboy being erased from the PS Productions logo does not mean anything, DreamWorks also swaps out characters in their logo montage sometimes," said another
Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will now completely disappear for modern consoles
In better news, PS Plus members can download Ark: Survival Ascended, Balatro, and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun for free from May 6 to June 2
Vikki Blake is a reporter, critic, columnist, and consultant. She's also a Guardian, Spartan, Silent Hillian, Legend, and perpetually High Chaos. Find her at BlueSky.
It was a much better platformer than something like Super Mario 3D World
I really dont understand how Sackboy could fade into obscurity after being in a game that was that good
Playstation was doing nothing with the franchise
and its thunder was absolutely stolen by Astro Bot
Seems today is the \"news that actually everyone knew beforehand\" day
Guess Sack Boy’s workplace conduct finally caught up to him
They have had countless characters over the years and every single one of them is either left to gather dust
They could have been another Nintendo with their library
but instead they just mess it up every time..
So this article is basically just saying that Sackboy is not part of the Until Dawn Sony Productions intro
The article's author quotes reactions from the internet but the author doesn't mention even TRYING to seek confirmation from Sony or any kind of statement
Did Sony feel like Sackboy shouldn't be in this kind of intro
We don't know and the author didn't even try to find out
i know a ton of you in here were huge fans of these ip's and played them regularly
hopefully you can find the courage to carry on
I have fond memories of enjoying 4 player chaos with my nieces and nephew
I hate to say it but...I'm actually kinda surprised Media Molecule is still around
but stuff like this does not bode well for their future imo
Marvel has changed the characters in its opening logo every time for the last decade or so
Doesn’t mean that characters are being “erased”
As for franchises… well I’m still waiting for a new F-Zero but just because there hasn’t been a true new game in over a decade doesn’t mean it’s dead
Id anyone check the chins of the CEOs at Playstation
The mainline games are delisted and there doesn't seem to be another in the works
It makes sense that the franchise isn't highlighted anymore
‘YES’ - Sackboy has allegedly said some culturally insensitive words
and Damascus goat all allegedly claimed to be over the age of consent in their respective states
‘NO’ - Sackboy allegedly has not paid alimony to his ex-wife for the last 6 years
…But with all those years of joy Sackboy has given to us
I think he at least deserves to be heard in all 11 of his pending court cases before we send the guy to cancellation island
Playstation changes mascots like most people change underwear
At least they're trying to do something with Astrobot
Playstation ordered Astro Bot to take Sackboy out the back and shoot him
Media Molecule kicked Sackboy out the door after Little Big Planet 2
They even kicked out poor Tearaway and now Dreams
Yeah they haven't made a game for em in a while
Anyway astrobot looks like sackboy got turned into a robot lol
some vfx artist is having his arse kicked around now for forgetting to include him
Darwin Nunez made the day of Chelsea mascot Tony Hudgell all the more special with a touching gesture before kickoff
which he proudly showed off live on TV on Monday morning
Nunez was among Liverpool’s substitutes in the defeat to Chelsea on Sunday, a telling move from Arne Slot after he made six changes to his starting lineup without considering the No
But while there will have been personal disappointment over that decision, he went out of his way to make the day of the Chelsea mascot all the more memorable
Tony Hudgell walked out with Cole Palmer ahead of the match at Stamford Bridge
but it was Nunez’s shin pad he showed off live on Good Morning Britain after plucking it out of his sock
Not letting his interview end without making mention, he said: “So someone in the Liverpool team gave me their shin pad…Darwin Nunez

so mum was worrying if he played with just one shin pad!”
Nunez came on not long after the hour mark and

In the 1980s, the Noid was inescapable. Domino's Pizza flooded the market with commercials and toys of their obnoxious mascot whose antics bolstered Domino's famous promise to deliver pizza within 30 minutes or it's free. The Noid was so popular that rival pizza chain
declared "war" on its arch-competitor and earmarked $75 million to promote its new pizza delivery service
The Noid was created by claymation artist Will Vinton, whose California Raisins had skyrocketed him to fame, and the weird bunny-eared, red-suited gnome was designed to depict the challenges of delivering a fresh pizza in 30 minutes. The Noid — whose name was a shortened version of "annoyed" — debuted in 1986 and became an instant hit with pizza lovers
and "Avoid the Noid" became Domino's catch phrase
and the villainous irritant even appeared in Michael Jackson's film "Moonwalker."
the Noid's slide into obscurity began at a bizarre hostage stand-off on January 30
Twenty-two-year-old Kenneth Lamar Noid burst into a Domino's in northeast Atlanta
brandishing a gun and taking two employees hostage
Noid was holding a grudge against the mascot
which he believed Domino's owner Tom Monaghan had created to personally mock him
but he also ordered one of the hostages — pizzamaker Sean Burnsed — to telephone Monaghan so he could air his griefs
but the employee who answered didn't take his request seriously
until Noid shot his gun twice at the ceiling
Noid threatened to kill Burnsed if the police showed up
Monaghan was alerted to the hostage crisis and offered his private plane to fly in and evacuate the hostages
Police officers arrived with the book Noid had requested
Burnsed decided to keep Noid calm by making him a meat-and-veggie-heavy ExtravaganZZa pizza
but Noid refused to allow Burnsed to cut the pizza since he believed the pizza cutter could be brandished as a weapon
Noid eventually relented and let an officer inside

very lucky man and making the most of the opportunities that come my way," Cahill tells The Music
Mikey Cahill as Hawka with Hawkette (Source: Mikey Cahill)
Melbourne-based music journalist and musician Mikey Cahill (also known under the moniker of DJ Joey Lightbulb) does something else with his free time: he’s the Hawthorn Football Club mascot
This week, The Guardian published an op-ed by Cahill entitled “Cheers and jeers, hugs and thugs: life as a sporting mascot is anything but predictable.” In it, he discusses his 19 years in the suit as Hawka.
In a statement to The Music, Cahill opened up about the challenges—and joys—of juggling his mascot side hustle with his jobs in music.
“It’s a lot of fun doing the juggle, but the juggle is real,” Cahill explains.
“I will say this—what’s scarier than getting punched in the face by a twelve-year-old Collingwood fan is putting up with drunken bridesmaids at 12:45 am who are insisting that they wanna hear Pitbull, and I have a strict no-Pitbull rule unless the bride or groom ask for it. So, that’s a bit of a peril of the job, but it’s all worth it!”
Cahill continued, “I love having a very, sort of non-linear career and jumping all over the shop. I actually look busier than I am,” he noted, adding that he gets to sleep in “a lot.”

“I’m a very, very lucky man and making the most of the opportunities that come my way,” he tells The Music. “And I hustle, hustle, hustle, so my advice to everybody—unsolicited—is you just gotta get your hustle on, okay?”

For Cahill, his side hustle as Hawka is always interesting. He receives group hugs from young children, punches from a pre-teen Collingwood supporter, and was unmasked at a particularly rough Legends Game.
“There’s always a good level of banter and camaraderie at AFL games but this crowd was particularly hostile,” he wrote for The Guardian, adding that he loves to shock people as Hawka. His standard jump-scare move? “Wait until they’re not looking, leap onto the fence with my hands (wings?) and put my menacing face within an inch of theirs. Works every time.”
However, the Legends Game was a “different beast.” Cahill recalled that a “cheeky rascal” ripped the Hawka head off him, unmasking him before the crowd.
“It took all my strength and a genuine tug-of-war to hoist myself over the fence, reach into the third row and wrest it back off him and three of his smartarse mates,” he wrote. “There was no way I would’ve retrieved it if it had gone further into the crowd. I was already imagining a YouTube clip going viral the next day: ‘Keepings Off Mascot as Hawka Loses His Shit.’”
Later in the piece, Cahill teased other tantalising run-ins as Hawka, including with former President of the Collingwood Football Club and commentator Eddie McGuire. But “Hawka needs to keep a few secrets.”
Closing the piece by sharing that he isn’t “really meant to talk,” Cahill reminded footy fans that mascots are there to have fun (and you with them), but don’t take things too far. “Hawka will eat your head, just don’t punch him in his,” he concluded.
When Cahill isn’t donning the Hawka suit, he’s busy being a journalist, DJ, MC, video creator, and trivia host. As DJ Joey Lightbulb, he recently performed at Golden Plains festival and opened for The Presets for their Live At The Gardens set.

Mascots are weird, right? There’s something chilling about the lifeless eyes, the oversized grins, and the thought that deep beneath layers of foam and latex, a human lurks. The Tasmania Football Club has unveiled its first-ever mascot during a sold-out one-year anniversary celebration of the Tasmania Devils
The launch of ‘Rum’un the Devil’
marks a major milestone in the club’s journey towards joining the AFL in 2028
The Devils’ Kath McCann said the mascot took nine months and more than 400 hours to bring to life through a partnership with local arts organisation Terrapin Puppet Theatre
“Rum’un is known as an odd character
a uniquely Tasmanian character and an affectionate term of endearment for a Tasmanian,” she said
“Obviously we don’t have any players yet
but we do have a team and Rum’un now takes a key place in our team.”
“Rum’un’s going to play a really important role in participation
He’ll be working alongside the team at AFL Tasmania to get out into schools to drum up support and participation.”
Rum’un’s fur is made entirely from recycled Tasmanian school uniforms donated from children across the island
He will make his inaugural public appearance at Agfest in May
the Tasmania Devils have attracted over 207,000 founding members
Fresh “top-up” membership offers will launch today
limited-edition merchandise and an exclusive club football
But while the mascot and merch are exciting
McCann said there is still plenty of work ahead before the club takes the field
completing the AFL high-performance centre and approving the Macquarie Point stadium
“We’ve got a lot of work to do to get to first bounce
but we absolutely have to maintain the momentum,” she said
There’s no dull moments and there can’t be.”
“Despite the fact that 2028 feels like a long way away
there’s a lot of work to do and that momentum’s critically important.”

One of the loveliest books I've read in the last few years is J
The book's about a lot of things - and I may have written about it before on Eurogamer - but
the novel concerns a veteran of the first world war who turns up in a small village up north to uncover a piece of art that's been concealed in the church
restoring a lost mural element by careful element
having nightmares of the mud and gas at night and making tentative friendships during the day
he leaves and is - somehow - transformed by the experience
Promise Mascot Agency is not very similar to A Month in the Country - in a minute I'm going to make that extremely clear by listing some of the things it contains - and yet it reminds me of the novel in a way that little else does
but one of them is about finding a new way of being in a new landscape
It's about getting away - in less than ideal circumstances - and finding out that life continues
I was cleaning shrines up in the hills when I got a call that my mother was about to be killed by proper professional villains unless I paid some protection money pronto
which meant my nightly bills were coming and they would surely take me even further into the red
jouncing along in my rattling van that was decked out for a political campaign I was currently running against the town's crooked mayor
yam-covered cat (don't ask) who I'd sent to cheer people up at a local bookstore (don't ask) would do the job and bring home some cash in time for me to transfer it before all those bills swept it away and my mum ended up in the river
Promise Mascot Agency is quite an odd game a lot of the time
And if anything I've played it pretty straight up-front
This game has weeping tofu mascots getting into fights with badly stacked boxes
papery ghosts circling the hills and alleyways
who likes to ride in the back of that van and spout obscenity-laced wisdom at the worst moments
But underneath all this stuff is something everyone can understand
what to spend it on and what to do when you don't have enough of it
it's a kind of temporal and financial survival horror
Given the current cost of eggs in the local Tesco
Paradise Mascot Agency is goofy and heartfelt and funny and scary
It's simultaneously bizarre and warmly familiar
Any follow-up to Paradise Killer was going to be a bright surprise
was an adventure game in exactly the same way that Moby-Dick is the story of a workplace injury
And yet Promise Mascot Agency still feels utterly unexpected
you're sent to a small run-down town to lie low for a bit and get the local mascot business going again
sometimes monstrous characters you see at sports games
except I'm not sure these have actual humans beneath the costumes
arranging their cut of proceeds and how often they get things like bonuses and rest days
then you send them out on jobs - to bookstores and love hotel parties and schools and bakeries and those kinds of things
Often the mascots mess up and need your help
so you find yourself playing a brisk CCG against foes that could be a swarm of bees and could be a stalker or a demonic wolf or a walkway that's a little uneven
Promise Mascot Agency is sort of an adulthood simulator
Money is limited and outgoings are everywhere
The world you find yourself in is hard to understand and filled with strange complexities
and your chaotic charges need a lot of help to keep them engaged and focused and out of danger
The questions you face daily include how to spend your money wisely
how to make friends and help them when they're in need
and how to leave the world a little better off than the way you found it
A lot of Promise Mascot Agency involves what you do in between sending your mascots out to events and the point at which they either return with cash or phone up saying they need your help with some narrow doorways (don't ask)
you race around a compact open-world in your upgradable van
meeting new people - each fresh face gives you a new card you can use when battling to keep mascots on track at events - as well as understanding the story of the place and how it came to be so run down and neglected
and you largely do this in classical open-world fashion
Clean a bunch of shrines dotted around the hills
Knock down a rival politician's posters and - once you've decided that the thumb you roll around with should run for mayor - replace them with your own
Chase down spectral animals for van upgrades
including a brilliant spin on a cannon and actual glider wings
Send the restless dead back to their graves
Two things happen while you're rattling around
you go from getting a sense of the town and its inhabitants to properly bringing it back to life
clearing trash and reopening old routes and blocked paths
you go from just scraping by - and ruining your finances every time you get a call about mum - to having a decent amount of spare cash to invest in things - like upgrades for your base and means of passive income
hardscrabble landscape starts to feel like a place you actually know and care about
I stopped working towards unlocking fast travel because I was enjoying tooling around in the truck
I started visiting people not because they might upgrade my cards or give me new mascot jobs but because I liked seeing them
There's a lady who runs a coffee place in the hills
Tell her about your new mascots and she turns them into deserts that you can give mascots as buffs when they head off on jobs
but that isn't why I was visiting so often
this game is weird and creative and filled with things that come as a huge surprise
but underneath all that it's also a simple delight
a story about getting to know people and working out how you and your giant
It's about working to make a place shine again
change dialogue speed and turn off text animation effects
turn off screenshake and full-screen effects as well as UI animations and noise overlay
control camera recentering and camera pitch
control speed and evasion abilities of chasable animals and traffic
Ultimately Promise Mascot Agency can revel in the weirder elements of its story because the underlying design is so solid and familiar
It really is an open-world game about visiting map markers and ticking off tasks when you get down to it
and it's almost an idle game about investing your time and money to watch the numbers go up as well
the developers can throw in all kinds of whimsy and it just makes things richer - the kind of whimsy that makes the map markers you're ticking off truly pleasurable
and that gives you genuine pause as you're considering your various means of passive income
Promise Mascot Agency's in the old business of giving people what they want
I couldn't easily express how grateful I was

The debut of Tasmania’s distinctive new AFL mascot ‘Rum’un’ has triggered a wave of colourful commentary from mainland Australians
with many taking to social media to express their bemusement
Nine months and over 400 hours of work went into creating Rum’un
a character described by the club as being unmistakably Tasmanian
Yet mainland critics have likened the mascot to everything from a New York subway rat to a character straight out of the 1990s ABC children’s program Feral TV
“All the kids will be rum’un away”
wrote one commenter on the AFL’s official Instagram page
while another said “that dude looks like a piñata.”
Tasmania FC’s Kath McCann said the mascot’s unique island character might just give the team a competitive edge against their mainland rivals
“Rum’un is known as an odd character … and an affectionate term of endearment for a Tasmanian,” she said
McCann hinted that Rum’un might have “a few friends” come first bounce in 2028
“I’ve got aspirations about Rum’un … I’d love to see a Turbo Chook,” she revealed during a Local Radio interview on Wednesday
Chief designer Bryony Anderson from Terrapin Puppet Theatre said she was tasked with creating something “kick-ass” but also friendly enough not to scare children
“People said don’t make it like the Wiggles like all those other mascots,” she told Local Radio
“Cheeky … comes first so the Auskick kids aren’t scared
but then it’s got a little bit of ‘don’t mess with me’ that it can pull out when it needs it.”
Anderson noted that Rum’un sports a Band-Aid on his knee as a nod to AFL players in Queenstown who have “bloody knees within minutes of the game starting” on the town’s famous gravel oval
