Steward and trustee Thomas Bright and long-time member Benetta Jones said the St
James' congregation has been resilient in its shared faith
James AME Church in Mayfield retained its original cornerstone with the establishment date of 1868
The church features a wall mural from nationally renowned artist Helen LaFrance
a Black folk painter who was a lifelong resident of the area
students from the Murray State University history department documented the status of the extensive rebuilding process as the church nears the final stages of reconstruction
James African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Mayfield is estimated to complete rebuilding this year
The National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded the church a $100,000 grant for revitalization
according to steward and trustee Thomas Bright

students from the Murray State University history department documented the status of this extensive process as the church nears the final stages of reconstruction
Having lost his aunt and fellow congregant in the disaster
Bright said the church community encountered substantial tragedy
but it will define itself by resilience in shared faith moving forward
The roof was blown out and the sides were caved in
so there was just trauma on top of trauma,” Bright said
and we knew that God would provide a way for us to get back on our feet and rise to become better than what we were before.”
After some complications in FEMA and other funding
Bright said a major emblem of hope arrived when the National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded the church a $100,000 grant for revitalization
“The head cornerstone said the church was established in 1868
but the Murray State University History found records that date the church as far back as 1861,” Bright said
“We’ve always been an active community church
We are small in numbers but great in hearts.”
Bright highlighted the importance of restoring a long-standing community pillar
James AME is the oldest African American church in Graves County
He added that the church features a wall mural from nationally renowned artist Helen LaFrance
James AME is vital not only to the African American population but also Mayfield in general
as the legacy of perseverant strength is valuable today
“You can’t change history or erase it as if it didn’t happen
it got burned a couple times like so many Black churches did during that time,” Bright said
“But our church has always been a voice for education and rights advocacy
James AME has relied on camaraderie in adversity
he said Mayfield Church of the Nazarene and other local congregations opened their doors to St
James AME for joint services and fellowship
“Those who never lost faith and hope still participated,” Bright said
“We keep going because the church is more than just a building
Benetta Jones said the congregation’s spirit was indescribably vibrant during its height
but the disaster and other factors have caused membership to decline
She said the church will hopefully experience a resurgence after reconstruction
and we loved singing and hearing the preaching
and then the tornado just took the church out
We have faith that we’re going to build our church back up
Jones said the congregation’s close collaboration in rebuilding illustrated the power of unity
she said churches promote tight-knit bonds in the community that withstand hardship
She said all the local churches provided critical aid to Mayfield in the aftermath of the tornado
delivering supplies or offering facilities
but you just have to look to others to push forward.”

Matt and Eloise made this stunning heritage house in Mayfield their home
the property holds over a century of history within its walls and plenty of beautiful period features
“One of our favourite things about this house are the original horsehair patterned ceilings,” former plasterer Matt told Newcastle Weekly
“The house also has its original brickwork from the 1920s and is in such great condition.”
The elevation of the house means that the views across to Stockton and the mountains beyond are spectacular
“The sunsets are incredible from the back of the house
Eloise is always taking photos and we will both miss the views.”
Matt and Eloise made some major changes to modernise and enhance their characterful home
“We painted throughout and removed two internal walls
one between the lounge room and the dining room and another between the kitchen and the dining room,” Matt explained
creating a flowing and airy layout that allowed the light in.”
They installed a sleek new kitchen with a 900mm gas cooker and breakfast bar that blended old-world charm with modern functionality
they removed an old freestanding garage that obstructed the view
leaving behind a blank canvas for future owners
so you could still drive through andpark off-street,” Matt said

City of Newcastle is inviting Mayfield residents and businesses to take part in a series of "walk-shops" to uncover ideas for the future of their suburb.
Two walking tours will visit four locations within the Maitland Road shopping precinct to explore how locals use these areas now
and what could be done to make them more vibrant
The feedback will help guide concept designs for future placemaking activities and start to inform the development of the Mayfield Local Centre upgrade
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said City of Newcastle was committed to collaborating with the Mayfield community
"Our Local Centre upgrades are designed to refresh and revitalise neighbourhood shopping precincts across Newcastle
which in turn encourages residents to support local businesses," Cr Nelmes said
"We want to work with the community to implement revitalised infrastructure
and public art that aims to create an inviting space for people to meet
relax and enjoy retail offerings in a safe and welcoming environment
"This first stage of consultation will help inform future planning for Mayfield
allowing us to capture the community's thoughts on how they use their local centre
and how we can better activate these spaces for the benefit of all."
Walking tours will be held at 11am on Thursday
Participants will be encouraged to give their feedback on each of the sites located within the Maitland Road precinct between Kerr Street and Silsoe Street.
Visit https://PlanningMayfield.eventbrite.com.au to sign up for one of the tours
or visit the Have Your Say page on City of Newcastle's website to share feedback online before 13 September
The Mayfield project will be delivered through City of Newcastle’s Local Centres program
which invests in communities across Newcastle.
Concept planning and detailed design work for priority sites in Mayfield is expected to occur in 2025
Previous projects have delivered upgrades in Beresford Avenue

MAYFIELD is one of Hobart’s most unique examples of Gothic architecture
the conjoined triple-storey brick rendered Victorian building is straight out of an English fairytale
says heritage property specialist Dominic Romeo
Mayfield is believed to be the work of Alexander Dawson
who was responsible for designing some of Tasmania’s and Australia’s finest gothic buildings,” he said
Built in 1857, Mayfield retains all the classical hallmarks of the grand early Victorian Gothic vernacular
“These were all features designed to make an impact
impress and make a lasting statement,” Mr Romeo said

Mayfield is now on the market for the first time in 40 years
Mr Romeo said the land where Mayfield stands was originally part of the Boa Vista Estate
the superintendent of the Convict Establishments at Hobart Town
purchased about two acres of land from this estate in 1854 and built the two symmetrical conjoined houses
the Legislative Council initiated an investigation into the Convict Department and called in Dr Hampton
Comptroller General of Convicts and May after a rebellion was mounted on the front yard of Mayfield by local citizens upset at the owner builders for stealing building materials to build it,” he said

“Most of the materials used to build Mayfield were shipped from Port Arthur and listed as potatoes and other goods for the voyage
“They were charged with fraudulent appropriation of labour and materials
“May was reprimanded for employing prison labour for his own benefit during the building of Mayfield and Hampton refused to give information in court and fled to England
“This event was known as the Hampton Affair.”
Mayfield’s construction was completed in 1857
This stately home provides a substantial 348sq m floorplan
with its distinctive multifoil archway and arched doorway
and into the vestibule where you are greeted by a decorative staircase
which leads to several bedrooms — including the master bedroom and bathroom
The ground floor consists of a large dining room
The basement area provides a number of large rooms and a kitchenette — perfect as informal living rooms
further bedrooms or self-contained living quarters
Notable internal architectural features include Gothic arches
The house is well set back on a large garden allotment of 1161sq m
It includes a charming two-storey red brick gothic stable
The current owners of Mayfield have plans drawn up for the stables to be converted into a self-contained cottage
Mr Romeo said Mayfield is located in one of New Town’s premier streets
and in what is regarded as Hobart’s oldest suburb
it was home to Hobart’s wealthiest citizens and as a result has some of the most important and grandest houses in Hobart,” he said
Hobart’s CBD is only 4km away and at Mayfield’s doorstep are all highly regarded schools
New Town is listed for sale with Circa Heritage & Lifestyle

sprinklers and concerns the lights would go out before Waratah-Mayfield beat Newcastle City at No.1 Sportsground on Wednesday night to secure their second Newcastle District Cricket Association women's title in six grand final appearances
Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueWaratah-Mayfield have featured in every grand final since the women's T20 midweek competition was introduced in 2019
It took them four years to produce a breakthrough victory two years ago
and the second triumph was just as sweet for captain Emma-Jayne Howe
"It's just amazing," Howe said after securing a 10-run victory by the Duckworth-Lewis method (DLS)
"You work so hard and we're so close to City every time; it just feels good to be on top."
It started late after two rain delays to the earlier second division Plate final
Then 4.5 overs into the first division Cup decider
Waratah's batting innings was restricted to 18 overs
dug in as wickets fell consistently around her
She finished with a match-high 25 not out as Waratah reached 7-82
Fifteen-year-old Felicity Wharton, who was last year's player of the final
City had just begun their innings when sprinklers came on at one end of the ground
The wickets of openers Clare Webber (12) and Kirsten Smith (11) had City 2-25 after 6.4 overs
They were 3-28 shortly after when big-hitting Claire Coelho (3) was caught on the boundary by Madison Kedwell off spinner Jaclyn Vickery's bowling
some tight bowling had City restricted to 3-35
It was 4-35 two balls later when Grace Poole caught Tara French (4) on the boundary off the spin bowling of Emily Palmer
who went on to produce a five-wicket haul in a player of the final performance
Synetta Manns' spectacular direct hit at the non-striker's end from point had Madeline Case run out for five runs and the defending champions at 5-35
Anita Handono (4) also fell victim to Palmer's bowling and City were 6-41 with 6.3 overs to play
A 10-run 13th over had City 6-55 and the game on a knife's edge as word began to filter around the ground that the lights would be going out imminently
due to a curfew and DLS could again come into play
which then turned to confusion when the lights stayed on
Wharton was run out for five at the start of the 14th over then Palmer claimed the wickets of Bronte Morgan (0)
Christine Fernance (1) and Jordann Johnson (5) to have City bowled out for 72 at 10.09pm with seven balls to spare
City were visibly disappointed by the turn of events but captain Kirsten Smith conceded Waratah's fielding and bowling proved the difference
"Waratah bowled well and took their catches," Smith said
NDCA were unable to provide a comment on the lighting situation
City and Waratah have traditionally been the two strongest teams in the women's competition
which has quickly grown from four clubs in its first summer to 14 teams across two divisions
"The division two is a good thing to get older girls back into cricket and progressing the younger ones through
transitioning them into women's cricket," Smith
who has watched the competition's evolution
"I think you'll see eventually that base will feed into the first grade."
in the batting innings of both Merewether and Warners Bay in the earlier Plate final
Merewether made 2-112 off a reduced 16 overs with opener Emma McRae blasting 45 off 38 balls
Warners Bay then had 10 overs to reach a revised target of 78 after the second delay but fell short at 3-48

Early learning group Mayfield Childcare delivered a strong first half year result despite facing occupancy challenges and divestments of underperforming centres
The company delivered EBITDA (excluding the impact of AASB 16) of $5.8 million
an increase of 82.4% from $3.2 million in the previous corresponding period
The underlying net profit after tax jumped 214% to $2.5 million
driven by margin expansion and cost-saving initiatives
The company said it faced ongoing occupancy challenges in FY24
with group occupancy (excluding Precious Cargo centres) declining by 5.6% to 61.8%
This was primarily due to weather-related centre closures in Q1 and the underperformance of centres earmarked for divestment
approximately 80% of the company’s core portfolio achieved occupancy rates of 70%
Mayfield announced the divestment of underperforming centres to Steps Learning
which recorded an average occupancy of 46.3% in 2024
contributed to a 5.5% drag on overall group occupancy
The divestment is subject to final commercial terms and an independent valuation
“FY24 was a transformative year for Mayfield
marked by significant improvements in profitability and operational efficiency
Despite the challenges posed by weather-related disruptions and occupancy pressures
our team’s unwavering commitment to quality and cost management has delivered strong results
We are excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue to focus on our core portfolio and explore strategic growth initiatives,” the company said

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is issuing another warning about lithium-ion batteries following a townhouse fire in Newcastle on Wednesday morning
crews responded to Triple Zero (000) calls to a blaze in a two-level building on the corner of Maitland Road and Woodstock Street
firefighters were met by an intense and rapidly expanding inferno in the complex of eight townhouses
all occupants had self-evacuated with the assistance of neighbours
four were transported by NSW Ambulance paramedics to hospital suffering smoke inhalation
It then took firefighters approximately one hour to contain the fire
They worked from an aerial ladder platform truck to remove roof sheets and fully extinguish the blaze
“One adjoining unit suffered some damage,” Superintendent Adam Dewberry said
firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring residences
“Several lithium-ion e-bike batteries that had gone into thermal runaway have been located on site
which no doubt contributed to the intensity of this blaze.”

that's something the committee gets behind and we congratulate the state government on its leadership," Ms Thompson said
the site has failed to realise its potential until now
Former mining magnate Nathan Tinkler famously proposed to build an undercover coal loader on the land in 2011
The former Coalition government also knocked back a Port of Newcastle approach to acquire the land as part of its container terminal plans in 2020.
it called for expressions of interest in its future use in early 2022
It was suggested the land could be used for advanced manufacturing
the Minns government put the potential sale on hold
Port of Newcastle is progressing plans for a large-scale container terminal.Even though it appears that the land is now destined to be used for a logistics precinct in the short to medium term
it is likely there will be an opportunity for it to be incorporated into a future large-scale container terminal in decades to come
The port is progressing its plans to build the terminal after paying $13 million compensation to the state government last year
The one-off payment was required under the Port of Newcastle Extinguishment of Liability Act 2022 (NSW), which passed through Parliament in late 2022.
An EnergyCo spokesman said an environmental impact statement for the precinct was also being prepared. It is due to go on public exhibition for community feedback and submissions later this year.

The Mayfield local says he was frustrated at the "revolving door" of businesses coming and going at the Maitland Road shopfront in recent years and decided to throw his hat in the ring

It's going to be a bit of a community hub."
Opening the cafe also gave him the opportunity to offer his "amazing staff at Cakeboi" more working hours

Former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield is gearing up for his eighth season in the National Football League, and his third with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Both of Mayfield's seasons with the Bucs have produced career years
with 2024 standing as his best NFL showing yet
The former OU legend and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns with a 71.4% completion percentage last year
Those numbers put him among the best quarterbacks in the league
He had a 106.8 QBR and also ran for 378 yards and three touchdowns
Despite losing offensive coordinator Liam Coen
Mayfield is primed to repeat or even improve on those lofty numbers this year
One of the biggest reasons for Mayfield's success in Tampa has been the wide receiver group he's been able to work with over the last couple of seasons
And as good as that room has been with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin leading the way over the last two years
it looks like it'll be even better in 2025
Touchdown Wire's Camber Michelle outlined just how dynamic Mayfield's WRs are heading into the season
as the Bucs used their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka to get even better at the position
"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers boast one of the NFL’s most exciting wide receiver groups heading into the 2025 season," Michelle said
the Bucs’ receiver room is both deep and strategically built for now and the future
General Manager Jason Licht’s bold draft moves and savvy contract management have created a unit that’s a nightmare for opposing defenses
Leading the way for the Buccaneers are Mike Evans and Chris Godwin
two players who have spent their entire careers in Tampa
They form one of the best WR duos in the entire league when healthy
and Mayfield has displayed chemistry with both of them
Tampa Bay's offense is very difficult to slow down when Evans and Godwin are at their best
But it's a couple of younger pieces that really have a chance to take the WR room from good to great for Mayfield in 2025 and beyond
"The addition of first-round pick Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka (No
2025) hints at a future-thinking approach," Michelle said
on a four-year rookie deal (with a fifth year option) worth approximately $10.6 million
While his immediate role may be limited behind Evans and Godwin
his selection ensures a seamless transition if either veteran departs or becomes injured
Egbuka’s value lies in his high ceiling and cost-controlled contract
emerged as one of the biggest steals in his rookie year
McMillan’s $1 million cap hit in 2025 is a bargain for his downfield threat and growing chemistry with Baker Mayfield
His eight touchdown grabs ranked second among 2024 rookies
and he’s poised to compete for a larger role
adds electric speed and punt-return ability
His cap hit and potential as a gadget player make him a low-risk
Michelle also noted that the Buccaneers have other players who stepped up last season when Evans and Godwin were injured
That includes Trey Palmer and Mayfield's old teammate from his college days in Norman
They are also solid at the tight end position with Cade Otton
boast two talented young running backs in Bucky Irving and Rachaad White
and return all five starters on the offensive line
Tampa Bay clearly believes in Mayfield holding the reins of the offense
and have confidence that the unit will soar again
even with Josh Grizzard taking over after Coen left to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars
As Mayfield enters the second season of a three-year deal
his team is doing all it can to set their quarterback up for continued success with a very deep group of wide receivers and an offense that looks like it'll be very tough to stop

A man has been charged with domestic violence (DV) and kidnapping offences following a police stand-off in Mayfield at the weekend
Emergency services were called to a unit complex on Woodbine Street about 10.50am on Sunday 23 March
officers were informed a 66-year-old woman had been assaulted by a man known to her
They attempted to arrest a 30-year-old male
who allegedly threatened police and refused to leave the unit
NSW Ambulance paramedics and Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) also lent assistance
The man eventually exited the unit and was arrested without further incident at about 5.15pm
He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with four offences
including hinder/resist law enforcement officer in execution of duty; destroy or damage property – DV; contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO – DV; and kidnap with intent to commit serious indictable offence
He’ll appear before Newcastle Local Court on Monday 24 March after being refused bail
Mayfield Chair Roseanne Healy expressed confidence in Stone’s leadership, citing his experience in driving growth and enhancing operational efficiency. She also acknowledged Naveinthiran’s contributions during his tenure.

Picture EJE ArchitectureWests Group has revised its plan for a large seniors housing development at the site of its Mayfield club headquarters
Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueThe club giant has prepared a scoping report for a state significant development on the Industrial Drive site that would include 125 independent living units and a residential care facility
The project would be built across three stages and incorporate four new buildings of five or six storeys
Wests have requested secretary's environmental assessment requirements (SEARs) to prepare an environmental impact statement for a concept plan and the first stage of works
The plans have been scaled back from a proposal in 2019 that included 262 units and a 216-bed aged-care facility
The Department of Planning noted at the time that the proposal's "bulk and scale are not consistent with the character of the surrounding residential area"
The scoping report said the development of the Newcastle Knights Centre of Excellence at Broadmeadow had made the land at Wests Mayfield available
"Wests Mayfield is poised to transform its site into a multifaceted community hub
expanding beyond its current recreational offerings to incorporate seniors housing
and a new residential care facility," the report states
"The proposal is poised to significantly unlock local housing stock in the area
ensuring that the next generation has access to quality
All three stages of the development would include partial demolition of existing structures
The first stage involves construction of two five-storey buildings containing about 82 independent living units and associated car parking
The second stage also includes partial demolition of existing structures and construction of two buildings of five and six-storeys with about 43 units
The final stage is a five-storey residential care facility
The final two stages would be subject to separate development applications

The Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice confirmed Tuesday that its investigation uncovered sexual misconduct
and more at the Mayfield Youth Development Center in Graves County
Five Mayfield employees in total were disciplined

It follows investigations into alleged misconduct
The DJJ confirmed Tuesday that its investigation uncovered sexual misconduct
Five Mayfield employees in total were disciplined after the investigation
Another employee retired from his position and the last was demoted
The state department said its investigation substantiated several problems at the Mayfield facility
a reporter with the Lexington Herald-Leader
filed an open records request to obtain the details of the investigation
Hundreds of documents detail several sexual encounters between employees inside the facility
One instructor also exposed the juveniles to a topless video of a female counselor
An employee also orchestrated a fight club
referred to as “running 30's.” The boys were allowed to fight for fun
Cheves said experts believe the issues arise from juvenile detention centers being understaffed and undertrained
"They've cut the staffing just in the last few years
They give them what they call on-the-ground training
the Department of Juvenile Justice Academy in Louisville
There have also been several escapes reported from the center in the last two years
Graves County Sheriff Jon Hayden said his department assisted in locating two juveniles who escaped to Grand Rivers in January 2024
He told reporters the facility is not safe for the juveniles or the surrounding community
you can walk in and walk right out,” Hayden said
Department of Juvenile Justice Commissioner Randy White released the following statement regarding the investigation
“As soon as these serious allegations were reported through our Ombudsman
individuals who are employed make daily decisions on whether they will adhere to their workplace policies and training
and if they choose to engage in misconduct
they will need to find employment somewhere other than the Department of Juvenile Justice
I have been committed to removing those who wish harm on our juveniles and facilities
We have no tolerance for actions such as what took place at the Mayfield Youth Development Center and will not allow employees to remain employed if they chose to conduct in similar behavior.”
He said he's working to improve security and employee training at the 27 facilities across Kentucky
This is the most recent local case of misconduct within the juvenile justice department. In March, former McCracken Juvenile Justice Guard Tyler Lynn was charged with two counts of second-degree criminal abuse. He's accused of breaking two boys' arms.
The U.S. Department of Justice began probing the DJJ in 2024, under President Joe Biden, for possible civil rights abuses of children in state custody following several recent stories of misconduct. It's unclear where the investigation stands under President Donald Trump’s administration.
