We’ve given you the lowdown on what to do in Inglewood
Here’s some of our favourite things to do around Maylands
Seasonal Brewing Co. fills the hole in our heart we didn’t even know we had
good food… if that’s not what Perth is about
Occupying a hundred-year-old building that was once a mechanic’s garage
neighbourhood spirit with a commitment to quality
plus plenty of natural wine and spirits for those more inclined
An aptly seasonal menu veers towards well-executed comfort and pub favourites – think Reuben croquettes
Noggos might just have Maylands’ brunch game on lock
Venture away from the hustle and bustle of Guildford Road
and you’ll find Noggos tucked away in a small row of shops on Peninsula Road
Whether you’re hoping for a decadent weekend brunch or a light brekkie after your walk along the river
We could talk for days about Perth’s pizza offerings, but almost every time, we’ll end up back at Rossonero
the garage-turned-pizzeria balances classical simplicity with crowd-pleasing modernity
We’re a sucker for the sweet ‘n spicy Honey Boy
but traditionalists may go for the Ol’ School
and the newfound home base of 2021’s most talked about conti roll
Next door neighbour to Rossonero, Lyric Lane is the cafe-bar-music venue hybrid we’ve all been waiting for
basement gigs in the evenings – you couldn’t ask for more
As we’ve driven past Amore Mio
“That looks like it could be a hidden gem…” It turns out
while it isn’t really all that hidden – it is an absolute gem
balancing between traditional and accessible
we’ve seen all your comments!) without skimping on quality
The Woodfired Baker specialises in all things sourdough and woodfired – but they also whip up some pretty killer pastries and sweets
but whatever you take home will put a smile on your face
Up your cheese board game with a trip to Smoult’s
where you can stock up on an amazing selection of cheese
charcuterie and artisan pantry items (think olive oil
Definitely make sure to go on an empty stomach
so you can take advantage of their ready to go lunches – not to mention their selection of sweets
Inspired by the cupcake bakeries of New York, Sherbet crafts their delectable baked goods in small batches in store
Pick up a celebration cake for your next birthday (or just because)
or stop by the vintage-inspired cafe for a cupcake and coffee… cake is appropriate breakfast food
After a long – and expensive – duel with the Department of Racing, Gaming & Liquor, Commune Wine Store has very quickly become a local favourite
The “neighbourhood wine store championing small
independent producers from home and abroad” is lush with delicious and delightful drops focusing on local and minimal intervention wines
the owners are friendly-as-heck and they’ll even slip you a sneaky card to get rid of corkage fees at neighbouring Rossonero if you’re headed that way
Since opening in 2018, Rabble have created a truly impressively inclusive bookshop
particularly when it comes to their children’s range – which includes books with with racial and ethnic diversity
rainbow families and characters with disabilities
Rabble is also host to some amazing in-store events
like their excellent Drag Queen Story Hours and conversations with authors
Always sticking their necks out to support the community
we can’t give enough credit and love to Rabble
After your cheese haul from Smoult’s, you won’t be able to resist popping in next door to the super cute Daisy & Rowe
Filled to the brim with gifts and homewares
it’s the perfect one- stop shop for all your gifting needs – whether you’re looking for a book on cocktails or indoor plants
You might just find a present for yourself in there
It’s hard, y’know – trying to stay all “hip”, and “with it”, as the kids say. Thankfully, Lula and Sasha are here to take the reins
With heaps of new styles arriving every day
the boutique has heaps on offer to keep you looking fresh
these guys will have you kitted out in some beaut looks that won’t break the bank
One of the retailers within Vintage Emporium, 20th Century Vintage is making all our retro interior dreams come true
The store offers a highly curated collection of mid-century and vintage furniture
So you’re feeling pampered and relaxed after your visit to Self Care Studio… how about an invigorating yoga session? Open House Yoga have a variety of classes on offer
from Dynamic Flow to the soothing and gentle Mellow sessions – and everything in between
Open House are committed to an inclusive approach to their yoga practice
financial and physical accessibility or trauma-sensitive teaching
Set against epic views of Perth City and Optus Stadium, Maylands golf course is another central gem
with gentle undulations and a bunch of lakes
don’t let the lack of hills fool you into thinking it’s a cakewalk
Their green fees are also fantastically priced

Where to Find Australia’s Best Inner-City Bakeries

In a post on Instagram the venue announced it was abruptly closing
“It is with heavy hearts we must announce the closure of our beloved Lyric Lane storefront from tomorrow … Albeit a lot sooner than expected
we’ve always dreamt of moving into a space of our own: one that is safe
So rest assured – this is not the end of Smidge
wholesale catering and retail services will continue on as we transition in our Smidge journey.”
Commenters lamented that they would soon be without their Smidge fix
its cinny scrolls will still be available at Hear This Coffee House in Morely and Timely Coffees in Bayswater
Gen Walters (Deli’s Continental) runs her hole-in-the-wall bakery with a simple motto in mind: “Built on the need for little treats”
But this small venue offer more than just platitudes
she’s armed with perfectly-produced baked goods
Smidge’s offering leans wholesome and homely
with plenty of options for those who are vegan or gluten-free
Beef or chickpea and beetroot patties and freshly baked focaccia toasties might be sold alongside pastries and cakes
Other standouts have included gluten-free friands loaded with chocolate chips; cinnamon scrolls coated in smatterings of sticky icing; and zesty lemon tarts with shortcrust pastry
all alongside Walters’s signature thick and chewy choc-chip and salted caramel cookies
Walters also uses Smidge as a vehicle to support mental health initiatives. The profits from a select baked good go towards a different mental health cause each month, such as Bluebird Mental Health

We like to bang on about how great (or rather
OK!) Perth is – but our greatness doesn’t just happen out of nowhere
We’re partnering up with Town Team Movement so we can shine a light on some of the people who help make our communities so unique
and just a few of the excellent initiatives they’re working on
This week, we’re featuring Emma Snow, one of the brains behind Creative Maylands
I’m intrigued to understand where your energy and motivation to contribute to the community stem from
I believe it all began with a realisation that I didn’t need a specific job title to make a difference in my community
A friend and I contemplated starting a group to enact change locally
focusing on areas around the train station
It dawned on me that perhaps we could make a difference together
My background in strategic town planning and city policy fuelled my desire to influence urban spaces positively
working within local government left me feeling somewhat restricted
merely drafting plans without seeing tangible outcomes
my involvement with the town team emerged as a means to directly impact change beyond bureaucratic hurdles
Could you elaborate on the relationship between Town Team Movement and the local government
Town Team Movement has played a crucial role in legitimising our endeavours
engaging with local government was challenging
as they were unsure of our intentions and how to collaborate effectively
as the concept of town teams became more familiar
This recognition provided a sense of legitimacy and understanding
streamlining our efforts to collaborate for positive change
Reflecting on your initiation of the movement in Maylands
what void in your community did the Creative Maylands aim to fill
The essence of community agency was what we sought to foster
It wasn’t about volunteering in the traditional sense; it was about empowering individuals to shape their surroundings actively
We wanted to inject vitality into our neighbourhood
and our initiatives aimed to facilitate that
Whether it was organising events or utilising untapped spaces like the neglected green area near the train station
our goal was to harness community input to transform Maylands into a vibrant
Could you provide examples of events initiated during that period
One notable initiative mentioned already was the activation of a neglected green space adjacent to the train station
we explored ways to repurpose the area into a community hub
we organised a street festival where we established a designated “chill-out zone” for residents to unwind and engage in activities
we ensured these initiatives were inclusive
soliciting feedback to preserve the unique character of Maylands
and how does Town Team Movement embody this concept
Place-making encompasses the collective effort of individuals to mould spaces according to their vision and needs
Transitioning from strategic town planning to place management
I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of community-driven initiatives
Town Team Movement epitomises this concept by empowering communities to take ownership of their environments
or fostering daily interactions that foster a sense of belonging
In what ways do you perceive Town Team Movement advancing community development
Our approach differs from conventional community development models in that we prioritise empowering communities to pursue their initiatives autonomously
we provide support and resources to facilitate grassroots efforts
place-based approach fosters organic growth and ensures initiatives resonate authentically within each community’s unique context
Reflecting on your experiences with Town Team Movement
Working across diverse communities has been enlightening
highlighting the varying mindsets and expectations prevalent in different locales
witnessing the collective drive to effect positive change has been immensely rewarding
Surrounding myself with like-minded individuals dedicated to tangible action has invigorated my passion for community engagement
Apart from your role as Executive Director within Town Team Movement
I’m a person amongst loads of billions of other people
and I feel like we should all try and leave the world in a better place than when we arrived
I just see myself as one of those people who’s trying to do that
I have been since I was 14 and I got a puppy and I love animals
I absolutely love them and I am also a person who lives to experience new places
I absolutely love it; that’s what excites me
You brought up an intriguing point about our purpose in the world
that it’s about making a difference and leaving something meaningful behind
It’s fascinating to observe many doers part of the movement
I think it’s just a desire to make a positive contribution
But I also think that it is different to that idea of service
Can you tell me more about your view on the idea of volunteering
you can have an influence on your place or the world; you’re not this passive person and everything’s out of your control
I think it’s really important not to feel like that
Engaging in the activation of your community can really help you realise that you do have a lot of agency
It is sometimes easier to think that you don’t
it’s super exciting and I think you feel much more in touch with life
Want to get involved and become a doer in your own community? Head to the Town Team Movement website to learn more.

Mayland Community College celebrated a major milestone in local workforce training this week with the opening of its new Dental Training Lab
a state-of-the-art facility designed to support the college’s recently launched Dental Assisting (DA I) program
Located in the Phillips Building on Mayland’s main campus
the lab replicates the environment of a modern dental office and is outfitted with the latest equipment and technology
The space will give students real-world experience and a competitive edge as they prepare to enter the healthcare workforce
“This lab isn’t just about technology—it’s about access,” said Dr
“We’re creating opportunities for local residents to step into respected healthcare careers without having to leave their community
That’s the kind of transformation Mayland is here to deliver—not just for students
The ribbon cutting event brought together faculty
including representatives from High Country Health and Mountain Community Health Partnership—two key providers serving Mayland’s three-county service area
Guests toured the new facility and enjoyed refreshments prepared by students in Mayland’s Culinary Program
The Dental Assisting (DA I) program began earlier this year and is a 300-hour credential that prepares students for key responsibilities such as chairside support
Graduates are eligible to sit for the DANB NELDA exam to become certified Dental Assistants (DA I)
“This program is about giving people real skills that lead to real jobs,” said Dr
associate vice president of economic and workforce development at Mayland
“Our students don’t just leave with a certificate—they leave with confidence
and the ability to step right into a dental office and make a difference
That’s what workforce training is all about—and this lab makes it possible.”
With demand for dental professionals growing across rural North Carolina
Mayland’s program arrives at a critical time
The college is also exploring future expansion through additional credentials and potential partnerships
Enrollment is now open for upcoming Dental Assisting cohorts

The closure of Maylands’ Swallow Bar left a huge hole in our hearts
but our heartbreak is finally coming to an end this week
Opening tomorrow in Swallow’s former site, Volare (Latin for “to fly
and a sentimental wink to the former bar) will be bringing the Euro-holiday
while keeping all the Art Deco delightfulness that helped make Swallow such a neighbourhood favourite
Don’t worry – the hand stitched ’20s train seats and pressed tin bar is still there
with the addition of a fresh coat of paint and some extra plant life
Coming from a team with pretty prodigious CVs
Also behind Northbridge tropical party joint Neon Palms
Jesse Tang and Chris Tilley have a combined 50 years of experience across venues in Perth and internationally – as well as Neon Palms
From tropical parties to old-world Europe: you can expect to find a hefty collection of aperitivo and digestivo
the starting menu from Piemontese Head Chef Luca Minetti features plenty of drink-friendly plates that have us dreaming of afternoon drinks that drift into dinner – particularly decadent bites like a chicken liver pâté cannoli or negroni-glazed octopus
“We’re passionate about bringing dining and drinking culture together as a symbiotic relationship,” owner Chris told us
“We’ve scoured the globe for the best amaros
wines and digestifs to create a truly unique experience to Perth
I can’t wait to show people the world of aperitivo beyond the iconic Aperol Spritz!”
“Aperitivo bars in Europe are all about connecting people,” Hayden added
“We want to create a sense of community and a ‘third place’ for people to unwind
socialise and indulge in all the finer things of life with their friends and neighbours

Muller Property Group has swapped plans for the Maylands Park project to include an 80-bed care home
Scrapping a previously approved application for a local centre
and warehouses as part of the second phase of its Nantwich masterplan – the developer has gone back to the drawing board
mimicking the project’s first phase to provide more homes
Muller Property Group secured planning permission in February for a 17,200 sq ft local centre. 18,900 sq ft of offices, and 20,900 sq ft of industrial on 4.7 acres of its Maylands Park development. It was designed to complement the group’s first phase of 188 homes
which secured planning permission last year and is being delivered in partnership with David Wilson Homes
The rethink was sparked by further consultation with the community
and stakeholders who pushed for more residential offerings on the site off Peter Destapleigh Way in Nantwich – rather than employment
The new proposals call for the building of 40 homes
The revised masterplan is purely residential
Anwyl Homes is set to deliver the 40 residences
The housing mix will range from one-bed apartments to four-bed houses
McCarthy Stone is charged with delivering the retirement living portion of the plans
A development partner is currently being sought for the care home
Muller’s new plans also include 1.5 acres of public open space and
a series of new access points to the site beyond just the two included in the original application
“Our revised plans for Maylands Park reflect our commitment to listening to local concerns and delivering a development that provides lasting benefits to the Nantwich community,” said Steve Bourne
technical director of Muller Property Group
He continued: “We are proud to offer a mixed-use development that not only provides housing
retirement and care but also prioritises public open space and green infrastructure.”
Asteer is leading on the planning aspects of the application
The project team includes Redmore Environmental
The planning application was not available on the Cheshire East planning portal at the time of publication

Maylands side-street Lyric Lane joins Guildford Road with Eighth Avenue and is probably best known as home to Rossonero, a restaurant regularly named-checked in the best-Pizza-in-Perth discussion
The street now lends its name to a new two-storey bar
cafe and live music venue that has taken two years to construct
Lyric Lane (the venue) is a family owned and operated business
with father and son Michiel and Konrad de Ruyter at the helm
“We started looking for properties seven years ago,” says Konrad
who was hands-on during the construction and now serves as the venue’s manager
“This one showed a lot of potential and Maylands showed a lot of potential as a precinct
We developed the concept of Lyric Lane around the laneway vibe and the bar being an extension of the laneway.”
Make sure you're subscribed to our newsletter today
The downstairs 170-capacity concert space is suitable for both standing and seated gigs from rock to acoustic
The site’s existing bike shop and warehouse was demolished to make way for the venue; the basement was tunnelled in after the slab was laid
It wasn’t originally envisaged as part of the project
what’s good for the site and what we see as something that will work rather than fixed ideas,” says Michiel
who project-managed Lyric Lane’s construction
we had no real concept of what this was going to look like
We didn’t even know we were going to put a basement in.”
Lyric Lane has eight independently owned beer taps featuring local breweries including (Metricup brewery) Beerfarm
Konrad previously oversaw the wine list at The Raffles Hotel
so customers can expect a well-curated selection with lots of Australian bottles including some “funky stuff” to keep things interesting
the lunch and dinner menu covers everything from burgers and fish and chips to more creative dishes such as brussels sprouts with green curry
Coffee is from local roaster Kaltiva and a burger-style breakfast menu is offered on weekends
Lyric Lane trades daily from early until late: a necessity
“If you want to be a local bar you need to do that,” he says
“Gone are the days when you can close for two days in the week
people want to be able to come out every night
we don’t have the luxury of turning ourselves off.”
Late-night snacks for the post-gig crowds are still under consideration
however there are plenty of options in the area
the kebab man down the road will love us for it,” says Michiel
