Congratulations on your graduation and receiving the University Medal
It is a real honour to receive the University Medal
the Medal is a reminder of all the people who have supported me throughout my degree
the Medal is a motivation to continue pushing myself so I can earn the support they have all provided
ANU was the clear choice of law school given its reputation for excellence and opportunities
Studying law within walking distance of Australia’s foremost judicial
legislative and administrative institutions is a privilege that was too valuable to overlook
What have been some of your highlights studying at the ANU Law School
Some principal highlights for me have been the opportunities to contribute to the Federal Law Review as a student editor and to represent the ANU in the 2024 Unjust Enrichment Moot in Brisbane
Working with the Federal Law Review has provided an opportunity to hone valuable skills while engaging directly with current public law scholarship
and the Unjust Enrichment Moot was a fun and challenging way to meet students from other law schools
and dive deeply into a complex and interesting area of law
Have there been any academics who were particularly influential throughout your law studies
I am enormously grateful to Dr Anne McNaughton who
in addition to being an incredibly supportive Honours thesis supervisor
teaches a brilliant and thought-provoking Commercial Law elective which I really appreciate having been able to participate in
I found Anne’s mentorship and willingness to have a chat extremely valuable
Dr Michelle Worthington and Judge Anthony Hopkins have also been exceptional instructors
and the resultant shift to online learning
was a challenge as it made it much more difficult to connect with peers and make the most of my time at university
It was important at that time to make a real effort to maintain and build relationships to keep up that aspect
The return to on-campus learning (even in-person exams!) was certainly a welcome one
What is your advice for prospective law students
My advice to new and prospective law students is to take every opportunity and run with it
Some of my fondest memories at ANU have been mooting competitions
especially those with subjects I knew very little about before getting started
I recommend signing up to those competitions without worrying so much about how you’ll do
volunteer answers in class without worrying about being wrong or seen as over-eager
and really lean into the opportunities which only really present themselves in these four or five years of your law degree
Your time at university becomes so much more valuable when you put in the effort to make the most of it
What is next for you beyond graduation

Queensland police have charged an amateur rugby league player with grievous bodily harm over an on-field incident during a preliminary final on the Sunshine Coast.
After a two-month investigation, police last week charged Noosa Pirates reserve-grade player Keegan John McKinnon, 22, over an alleged attack on a player from the rival Caloundra Sharks.
The Caloundra player left Sunshine Coast Stadium in an ambulance and was hospitalised for multiple operations. His jaw was broken in several places, leaving him not only unable to play but unable to work.
Footage of the incident appears to show several players from both teams standing in front of the goal posts during the game, which Caloundra went on to win 24-6.
McKinnon, wearing the number 21 jersey, as recorded on the official team sheet, appears to turn suddenly and punch the Caloundra player in an upward motion, striking him under the jaw.

Under the Queensland Criminal Code, grievous bodily harm is distinct from common assault in that it results in the loss of a body part or organ, serious disfigurement, or any injury that, if left untreated, would be likely to endanger life or cause permanent injury.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in jail.
This masthead has chosen not to publish the footage. It is expected to be raised in evidence, along with testimony from players, spectators, staff and officials.
Asked about any disciplinary proceedings against McKinnon, a Queensland Rugby League spokesman confirmed a player had been given a 12-month ban for striking and a two-match ban for contrary conduct over the incident.

Emmy Award-winning SNL star and Weird Barbie Kate McKinnon can now add novelist to her resume
The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette For Young Ladies of Mad Science
is a middle-grade mystery full of oddball characters
is part of what she calls her “private mission to give a wink and a nod” to young people who might feel “different,” like she did
McKinnon, whose characters and impressions on SNL are legendary
She wore a Peter Pan costume to school every day for a year
“I would go to school in these outfits because I felt more confident … and somehow more myself
McKinnon shared her room with an array of pets including Madagascar hissing cockroaches and an iguana named Willy
And I don't recommend it for anyone,” advised McKinnon
And by ‘fun’ I mean we had a contentious relationship that felt like a bad marriage that we'd entered into because one of us was pregnant.” McKinnon says eventually her mom
sent the iguana to a reptile rescue organization in Boca
Even though her parents fully supported her eccentricities
McKinnon said she often felt like an outcast among her peers: “I just felt very wrong
“In fourth grade we started a Honeysuckle Eaters Club on the playground
So we would go into a corner while all the cool girls were watching the guys play basketball
We would go and eat honeysuckle and try to understand the correlation between flower color and sweetness of nectar
“So that's what I had cookin,’ and luckily
Small wonder one of her favorite authors was Roald Dahl; she especially liked his book The Witches
in which the title characters turn children into mice
And who's more delicious than the Grand High Witch,” McKinnon declared
“But I loved also that it started with a set of instructions about how to identify real witches
And I was so taken by that because I thought
McKinnon breaks the fourth wall throughout Millicent Quibb
telling readers they can "take a short break" and that she's going to hand the story "over to the illustrator..
and go watch TV." She's referring to Alfredo Cáceres
"The situations contained in these books could cause:
Instant deathExtremely instant death (bad)Semi-instant death (worse)Burning in the upper extremitiesBurning in the lower extremitiesPermanent intestinal parasites"
McKinnon narrates the audiobook with help from her sister
Set in 1911 in the fictional town of Antiquarium
Eugenia and Dee-Dee Porch have passions that include slugs
Suffice it to say they do not belong in snooty Antiquarium where girls attend etiquette school and the official dog is the bichon frisé
They’re teased by classmates and shamed by their teacher
well-meaning mad scientist who trains the Porch sisters to help her save the town from the dangers lurking underground
Quibb’s hair is described as “a chaotic nest of salty
windswept fibers that were thick as sea rope.” She wears a lab coat “splattered with stains of all colors and textures-a neon green smear
Despite rewriting the first chapter "like 500 times,” McKinnon said she loved “writing about these three little weirdos and their Willy Wonka-esque mentor in this stuffy turn of the century town.”
It took her more than 10 years to write Millicent Quibb
She got the idea before joining SNL in 2012
At the time she was doing sketch comedy for free in the basement of a New York supermarket with the Upright Citizens Brigade
“Sketch comedy and middle grade literature have a lot in common
namely funny names and big hair,” McKinnon said
“And so it just felt for me like a way to perform when I didn't have to be at a show at the basement that night.”
McKinnon said she hopes her oddball heroes make her fellow misfits feel less alone
She’s a big believer that weirdness can be its own kind of superpower
That's actually the thing that you can use to save the town

Hetty’s essay on ’embracing a third culture’ brought me so much joy for the stories being shared now and all the voices that will continue to be shared in the future
I was excited to chat with Hetty about one of her standout recipes from her latest book and get the deets on what’s happening in her kitchen
Whole roasted gochujang cauliflower with smashed roasted butter beans (recipe below.)
It’s a wonderful way to show the grandeur of an everyday vegetable
And I love the ceremony of bringing it to the table.
I’ve developed several whole roasted cauliflower recipes over the years
I wanted to create something that was quite punchy
The gochujang lends fiery sweetness to the cauliflower
and it works beautifully mixed with yogurt
The dairy tames the spiciness while also adding a tangy creaminess
it shows off vegetables’ versatility.
I love that this dish is very simple to prepare but aesthetically impressive
Easy enough to cook for a weeknight dinner but visually appealing enough to present at dinner parties.
you only need two sheet pans (one works too
if that’s what you have available) and a hot oven
and the oven does all the heavy lifting.
The gochujang adds a hint of drama to this recipe
while also adding that element of surprise
I don’t think many people think to add gochujang to cauliflower
and while the yogurt will marginally tame this heat
I encourage you to add as little or as much as you like to the yogurt marinade
Don’t be afraid to roast your cauliflower until very golden
A lighter cauliflower will have less flavor than a deeply-browned one
A caramelized exterior means your cauliflower has smoky flavor which provides a nice juxtaposition to the sweet
I love sheet pans—I have about four or five permanently stacked in my oven
they’re great to use for mixing ingredients or for stacking dumplings or wontons (anything you’ll be making in bulk).
My other favorites? A great utility knife (mine is from Tokyo), a good pair of kitchen scissors (my fave is from Material Kitchen), a use-for-everything 10-inch skillet (I love my cast iron from Staub) and chopsticks for cooking
★ 5 Stars ☆ ★ 4 Stars ☆ ★ 3 Stars ☆ ★ 2 Stars ☆ ★ 1 Star ☆
This weeknight dish is full of bold flavors and savory spices
this cauliflower will satisfy your taste buds and bring the heat

“The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science,” came out last week—convened at Tea & Sympathy
who is twenty-seven and wore a navy dress and a tennis bracelet
“What I’m so passionate about doing is making etiquette really modern and approachable.”
three orphaned sisters (“gnarly nerds”) get kicked out of Mrs
Wintermacher’s School of Etiquette for Girls (a “factory of insidious conformism”)
and find themselves instead under the tutelage of the local mad scientist
Their expulsion stems from not being able to sit correctly on a velvet fainting couch
of course your posture would be very important,” Grumet advised
“We want to put our bottoms slightly forward.”
“Does good posture actually help your back stay functional throughout
“Or is that just them trying to get to us?” She poured water for Grumet
“It’s a nice way to trick our audience into thinking we’re a little bit more self-assured.”
“These are fake glasses,” McKinnon revealed
“If I want to feel like I look like I have my shit together
“I’m going to tell you the truth—etiquette makes me sad
It hurts my heart that there is a way you’re supposed to do something and
“What if you looked at it not necessarily as a rule book but more as a road map
to show others kindness and respect?” Grumet countered
“Do you see a difference between etiquette and warmth
I love warmth and holding people,” McKinnon said
And I think of that as separate from etiquette
which makes me think of 1890 and which fork you’re using.”
“Do you know the difference in when you put your napkin on your lap when you’re at a restaurant versus someone’s home?”
we put it on our lap as soon as we sit down
It’s a way to signal to our servers that they can approach the table,” Grumet explained
we wait until the host or hostess puts their napkin on their lap
we had a rule that no one could take a bite of anything until my mother
“The thing that rubs me wrong about etiquette is
it’s sort of antithetical to humor,” McKinnon posited
Wintermacher tells her pupils that “humor is for the ugly.”) “As I was coming here today
“A lot of people have etiquette trauma from the way that they grew up.”
“I grew up in a real loosey-goosey household,” McKinnon said
“My mom”—a social worker—“upon my menarche
wanted to throw me a party where we would dance around under the moon and she would make me a crown of tampons.” She added
the essence of humor is in the juxtaposition between what is and what ought to be
then I always wanted to provide a sense of what is.”
if you look at it as using humor to make people feel valued in your presence
don’t you think that’s its own type of etiquette?” Grumet asked
“Because we never know what we inspire in others by showing up as ourselves.”
“I’ve always liked to create what I think of as closeness by demonstrating my own willingness to humiliate myself or be very open about the fact that I don’t feel like I have anything together
McKinnon proceeded to balance a spoon on her nose
“Then I will have turned you,” McKinnon replied
“Did you spit on your nose?” McKinnon asked

Its change over day at Mandiri Beach Club located at Krui in Sumatra
with their appetite for waves well and truly fed
as another set of new hungry surfers are due to arrive
They will be chomping at the bit to get involved in some Indo dry season action
The time in between guests coming and going leaves Mandiri’s resident filmer and photographer Lachlan Mckinnon
It’s been a non-stop few months for Lachie since he joined one of the premiere accommodation offerings in Krui earlier this year
Indo has seen one of the best starts to its dry season in recent memory with back-to-back-to-back swells
This has given him the chance to shoot some crazy sessions
“When I first got here we had a consistent two month run of the beachie out front being good and then the dry season swells started to fill in and we had Brenno and the boys from The Mad Hueys come and visit
They actually extended their stay to catch one of the first swells and that was the start of the dream run really
Since then we’ve had all the guys in town for the QS comp score some sick waves and we had that one mental session with Kerrzy and Sierra
It’s been sick to get so many good waves in such a short period.”
The opportunity to work for Mandiri came at the right time for the Gold Coast born filmer
He was previously working on a charter boat in the Ments but recently went through some personal stuff and decided it was time for a change
Five months into life in Krui and 117 days off the beers (and counting)
Lachie seems to have found his happy place in front of the A-frame beachie at Mandiri
“I loved working on the boat but it can be pretty crazy
After finishing the season I came down here for six weeks
spent time with the guys and loved the operation
I’ve got some good friends here now and the locals are super nice
The guys that run Mandiri are good family men and community people
There’s a smaller crew of Westerners doing it here
say in comparison to somewhere like the Ments where the crews there have been running things a bit longer
Krui is growing with a lot of cool people in the area and it seems like a good place to get old.”
Lachie said there were a number of reasons
I’ve probably got five to ten more years of swimming in my prime and want to shoot some big waves from the water while I can
When I can’t anymore I’ll sit on the beach with a cocktail and ride a mini-mal.”
One of the sessions Lachie shot from the water recently was a tube fest at a right hand reef in Krui where Sierra Kerr stole the show with ‘one of the best tubes’ Lachie had ever seen
“That session with Josh and Sierra was definitely a standout amongst the sessions we’ve had so far this season
It was funny because we thought it was going to be packed as there was like 400 people in town for the QS comp and it’s the busiest Krui has ever been
there were only eight people out at the start and at one point it was just Sierra and a bodyboarder
“Josh made like 20 good ones and then Sierra’s was just mind blowing
It was a perfect day of eight to ten foot barrels and just a few people trading off for hours
Lennox Smith and Dane Henry came up to Jimmy’s and the waves weren’t quite as good but there was still some mental ones
It was the first time I’d seen Dane surf in person for a while
so it was good to see him stack six or seven tubes before the wind came up.”
Lachie and the crew at Mandiri are preparing for another set of guests to arrive and with dry season only at the half way mark
the crew will be hoping for many more swells to fill in

no matter what capacity they come to Australia in
they always know how to bring a party with them
Fresh off the back of their first trip down under since 2019's Good Things Festival run, the boys tore up stages at KNOTFEST and that incredible Brisbane sideshow and not only did they destroy all expectations
they won over more fans than they arrived with
after a calculated intertwining of their heavier metalcore elements and the emotional sing-a-long inducing anthems that made them a household name in the scene
Backstage in Brisbane, we got the chance to shoot the shit with frontman Jeremy McKinnon, chatting all about their surprise release Big Ole Album Vol. 1 - which is single-handedly changing the way fans consume music - by dropping physicals a month before streaming platforms. Was this a strategic plan or simply a happy accident?
Watch the chat below to find out or read on for the best bits...
Turns out, they had the stock sitting, ready and waiting, so why not just give it to the masses early and in turn instigate a movement which benefits the band and their most loyal fans first!?
"The idea got brought up to just put it out on physical first because we had the vinyl done. We had it just sitting in a warehouse somewhere for months and the little funny video we made really was the conversation [we had], like 'why don't we just put out the vinyl since it's made and then put the music out a month later and see what happens?' just to get people talking and get people excited."
The process worked for A Day To Remember who consequently landed in the Top 5 Billboard Album Sales Chart in the US (and #6 on the ARIA Vinyl Charts in Australia) - without any streaming support.
This massive 'take back the narrative' step also worked in the favour of independent record sellers who had been neglected for years since streaming overtook the industry's music consumption. Not surprising, they were all on board when it came time to surprising the world on launch day accordin to Jeremy.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by A Day To Remember (@adtr)
A Day To Remember have been a forward thinking band for over two decades now
and in that time many conversations have come about from their supposed change in sound
Critics and "fans" relentlessly leave comments online stating the band had gone soft and lost their heavier edge
they never were a band that solely released albums containing back to back heavy hitters and breakdowns
After bringing this to Jeremy's attention
the vocalist was more than willing to hook in
"I think it's more our fault than anybody else's..." he stated
"We've always been a band that kind of catered to multiple genres at one time
So we could go on a heavy tour - I always use Parkway [Drive] and The Acacia Strain the first time we came over here as an example of we fit right in on that tour - and bands that plays pop punk couldn't."
"And I can understand why if you liked that from us
you only want us to do the thing you liked
but A Day To Remember is a little bit more than that
There's a portion of the fanbase that isn't catered to as much as they would like as normal bands do
Because normal bands are like 'this is our sound and that's it,' so I get it."
With the approaching release of their 8th studio album
the scene was left in a frenzy for two reasons
2 could very much be on the way down the track
and the second surrounding the notable names from the heavy/alternative scene who feature on the front cover
With a solid list of who's who - including Cody Quistad from Wage War
everything) and so on - many of us pondered the reasons behind their inclsuions
something McKinnon was not shy about discussion in detail
"Pretty much everybody you see was a part of the creation in some way
They worked on it or they wrote with us [or] some are a guest vocal spot
We'll see what happens as it rolls out."
As the heavy music community continues to play Where's Wally with the album cover
it should very much be noted that Oli Sykes is credited as a writer on track #8
Those with an early physical album would be aware of what this means
but for those without a copy - I guess you'll be waiting for the drop next week
attention turned to the band's calmer and more chilled out antics since becoming dads
are proud parents of two girls (aged 7 and almost 4) and conversations lead to living the rockstar life with kids
and their opinions of dad's work life
so when they come out [on tour] they're still very excited
They think it's super cool and we let them come out and throw toilet paper and they think it's the coolest thing ever
I'll have to get back to you when they get to the age that they're over it."
Perhaps by the time A Day To Remember reaches their 30th Anniversary
but until then there's still plenty of things to get excited about for the band - both at home and on the long road ahead

the SNL alumna transforms into the quirky Susan Toothbrush
who urges brushers to switch over to Sonicare
has kicked off a new ad campaign featuring none other than comedian and former Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon
dubbed the ‘Sonicare Switch,’ aims to coax toothbrush users out of the Stone Age – specifically
those folks still clutching their manual toothbrushes
McKinnon adopts the persona of Susan Toothbrush
a chic and somewhat unexpected guest who intrudes on unsuspecting individuals during their most private moments – while brushing their teeth
questioning his choice of an “ancient bristle stick.”
The star expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership
saying: “I’m thrilled to be working with Philips Sonicare to motivate people to make the Sonicare Switch
How you feel about yourself is what’s most important
and encouraging people to make the switch – like I did – to a Philips Sonicare was a no-brainer
I never pass up an opportunity to pop into people’s bathrooms when they least expect it.”
The brand believes that McKinnon was “the perfect pairing” to the ad’s message
Philips North America’s senior marketing director
“Her enthusiastic energy and unmatched comedic talent are helping empower people to reconsider their current brushing habits and upgrade to a more effective oral healthcare regimen.”
The work promotes the Philips Sonicare power toothbrush portfolio
which features devices including the Sonicare 6100
Sonicare 4100 and the high-end DiamondClean Smart 9300 – which the brand claims can remove up to 20 times more plaque along the gumline
“Whether heading into a big interview or taking a big step in your relationship
we want you to feel equally confident in yourself and your oral healthcare products,” Vidalis said
viewers can expect to see McKinnon’s character advising couples settling into their first homes
and everyone in between to embrace this newfound dental tech
The ‘Sonicare Switch’ campaign was created with the help of creative agency FleishmanHillard
It will run in the US and Canada over the next few months
Consumers can also find it in stores and on various paid media channels

Walking through grief is a daunting task. To do it publicly adds an entirely different level of complexity and emotion. In her new book "Tenderheart: A Cookbook About Vegetables and Unbreakable Family Bonds," Hetty Lui McKinnon confronts the loss of her father and explores how his work shaped her future in food
"I have often felt estranged from the person I was before my father died
my big moments happened in the years following
and the mannerisms of someone no longer with us
geographically distant from my mother and my siblings
our legacy is not always something we can hold on to physically
It represents the experiences of the generations before me and it is a legacy for my children
I have found a way to stay connected to my dad." — Hetty Lui McKinnon
The following has been edited and condensed for clarity
He went by Ken after moving to Australia as a teenager from China
My dad was very much a model immigrant in the 1950s
He still had family in Guangdong Province where my family's from
They were like the two elders of the family
He worked at the markets with my uncle who actually lived next door to us in Sydney
he made lots of friends with other vendors at the market
His world was this fresh world and that's what he brought home to us
you think this is what everyone grows up with
having fruits and vegetables right at the cusp of their seasonality
it became very evident how luxurious a life we led in terms of what we had at our fingertips at all times
I found it really striking when you describe the time immediately after your father's death
when your mother realized that she was going to have to shop for the family now and that all of these vegetables and fruits would not just magically appear in abundance in the house
and my mother had been in Australia at that time for probably 20 to 22 years
"I've never gone to buy vegetables before." To actually go to the grocer get a little plastic bag and fill it with four apples or six carrots
she had never done that before because it had all been brought home by my father
So it was a huge period of awakening for all of us but particularly for my mother
There's an essay in the book about the reinvention of my mother and she really had to reinvent herself like in her 40s
She had to shop for food for the first time
She really had to push herself out of her comfort zone
I witnessed all of that because I was home with her
I became very invested in being "good" for my mother because I didn't want to cause her any more stress
"I have often felt estranged from the person I was before my father died," writes Hetty Lui McKinnon
as she considers milestone moments that occurred without him
Why was now the right time to confront your loss on the page and honor your dad's legacy
these words that I wrote on paper were not even thoughts I was bold enough to think
she did her best to move on with the family
We obviously talked about my dad but not in a way that I felt like I could keep his memory alive
all the tactile things about a person kind of fade
You almost need to conjure these memories in your head
Whether they're real memories or an amalgamation of memories
Originally it was just a book about my favorite vegetables but in writing the book
I felt compelled to write about my father and this world that he created for me before he passed
this world that I lived before I was the salad lady or the lady that cooked with vegetables
I felt like it was really important to keep that legacy alive
Writing these words down on paper was healing
I think writing these words and actually exploring the influence he had on me and letting that joy in his memory and the spirit of him being a tender heart
having that joy seep its way into all the recipes
I feel a complete happiness in basking in his memory because I think for a long time
I had a business in Sydney where I delivered salads and the favorite salad on that menu was a char-grilled broccoli with chickpeas
So broccoli to me is super exciting but also so accessible to everybody
I don't have a barbecue or outdoor grill anymore
it turns it into something completely different
I'm not a huge boiler of any vegetables but there's a lovely recipe in the broccoli chapter where it's blanched for two minutes in salted water
these words that I wrote on paper were not even thoughts I was bold enough to think," says Hetty Lui McKinnon of her latest work

You have a broccoli dish that you pair with a Sichuan dukkha
Could you describe what a dukkha is and how you made it Sichuan-ese
A dukkha is a Middle Eastern nut and a spice
I add some Sichuan peppercorns and it gives it that little tingly effect
The dukkha is a great way to add texture and interest and a little bit of spice to vegetable dishes
Mine uses cashews to bring a little bit of that Asian influence
There's another recipe in the book based on a cacio e pepe but in the pepper mix
A cacio e pepe is a familiar flavor to many people
But when you add an ingredient that is slightly left field
"I know this but it's different." I love that element of surprise when I'm coming up with my recipes
And is there one you tend to use more frequently than the rest
I have written about Asian greens in all my books
I've always wanted to show people that they can be used in dishes beyond stir fries or steaming
I love it because the stem has that lovely mustard undertone and this bitterness but also sweetness
It would be so beautiful because the leaves get crispy and smoky and charred
There's a recipe that I absolutely love in the book called Charred Gai Lan with Farro and Soy Tahini
It's a really simple dish and so flavorful
It's a good jumping off point for a lot of people if they want to cook Asian greens in a different way
Store-bought gnocchi served with a fennel frond pesto is a family favorite in vegetable guru Hetty Lui McKinnon's house
You can make a pesto with so many different greens
Describe the texture and the flavors that set it apart
This is probably one of the most cooked recipes in the book
the beautiful grassy leaves at the top of the fennel
There's only so much frond you can use to top a salad
so this is a really good way of using the entire fennel
She told me that she was using her fennel fronds to make pesto
"That's really amazing." The recipe in the book is not hers
It's a different pesto because it feels really
I know "grass" is not really a foodie word but I actually love that
It's the association I get when I eat dill
It's much more textural than a normal pesto that's made with basil
You shave the fennel and you use the tops to make the pesto then it's served with pan-fried gnocchi
You don't have to make gnocchi from scratch
It is a really lovely dish that my family loves
and cauliflower have all had their moment in the spotlight recently
Do you have a prediction about the next "it vegetable"
It really wasn't until I was working on my third book
"What gives me comfort?" And it was potatoes
So I did a jacket potato recipe from my days in London
when we would often eat a jacket potato for lunch
There's this lovely dish in the potato chapter called My Mum's Velvet Potatoes
My mum makes his amazing pork chop dish with potatoes
She silkens the potatoes and the pork chops with cornstarch
That softens the meat but also adds a silkiness to the potatoes
I've just left out the pork chops and used that technique for her potatoes
So I think potatoes are coming back in fashion
a wonderful way to show how we can create an entire meal around one vegetable: crunchy shaved raw fennel is slathered in fennel frond pesto and tossed with crispy morsels of pan-fried gnocchi
This salad shows how anise flavors can be layered without overthrowing the other ingredients or dominating the overall dish
too—add some roasted broccoli or cauliflower
or substitute a filled pasta like tortellini or ravioli for the gnocchi
You could also use a short pasta shape in place of the gnocchi
You can use either vacuum-sealed or frozen gnocchi—if using frozen
I like to use baby fennel in this salad because they are sweeter and more tender
More than three decades after her father passed away
Hetty Liu McKinnon honors him with a tender cookbook about his legacy and her love of vegetables
a self-described "dork who baked," turned her passion into a cookbook of Filipino desserts

the alumni group that takes care of its own
Imprinted on it included a photo of the 1997 North Dakota State senior class
who led the way to a 9-3 season and a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs
They included offensive lineman Carey Crimmins
whose death in 2015 was the genesis of the BFPA in taking care of his family
Those former players included Jeff McKinnon
when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018
he lost his battle late last week and the ‘97 senior class lost another one
Crimmins at 40 years old and now Jeff at 50
“The Bison players have just shown up time and time again,” said Amy McKinnon
The touching part of these players is divisions and years don’t seem to matter
The guys from the FCS national championship teams that started in 2011 are just as apt to help a guy from the 1990s as one of their own teammates
Defensive end Cole Jirik helped the family move
Players sat with Jeff during chemotherapy treatments
Football is a violent game; this is the other side of it
“They know that if I don’t have my sunglasses on to not ask how Jeff is doing because they know I’ll cry no matter how he was doing,” Amy said
Everybody is like he’s the toughest guy I know
His perseverance just keeps shining through all the time.”
McKinnon played from 1994-97 finishing his career with 151 tackles
the lead paragraph depicted a player who defied the expectations of his position: “Jeff McKinnon stands 6 feet
Those are three averages of a college quarterback.”
he was an outside linebacker from Wahpeton
he was part of the Wahpeton teams that went from high school doormat to the North Dakota Class A playoffs
going from starting as a sophomore to a backup as a junior but back to starter as a senior
and Jeff did his best to fight his diagnosis
“He deserved to win the lottery rather than battle cancer,” said Sean Fredricks
Jeff spent his life serving others working in behavioral health for the state of North Dakota
Those who worked with him said they appreciated how he handled tough situations
He once saved a suicidal male with an immediate intervention
Jeff’s wishes were for support directed toward his family
with an account established at Bell Bank in care of the Jeff McKinnon Benefit Fund
It’s a slam dunk support will come from his teammates
Amy has a memorial poster with photos of all the players that have helped over the years
when former players are invited to the last walkthrough practice
Those are good times with plenty of laughs
