Kate Gath wrestled with her emotions after steering Tango Tara to victory in the Vale Greg Sugars Free For All at Melton on Saturday night Moments earlier in the home straight she had surged past Jess Tubbs-trained Rocknroll Hammer ($2.40 fav) and James Herbertson in the red white and green silks made famous by the late Sugars “I kind of feel bad for winning,” Gath said but I can’t say going past 'Herbie' up the straight was as good a feeling as what it normally is when you win.” Gath sensed the crowd willing Rocknroll Hammer on after that pacer straightened with a clear lead “It’s not great to beat his stable runners but it really is an honour to win,” she said Each runner at the meeting wore a ribbon of Sugars’ driving colors in their hair “I think we’re all pretty numb and in shock I just can’t stop thinking about Jess and Greg’s family,” Gath said look at the trainer he was and look at the driver he was “I forget how many times Andy (Gath) would say to me ‘watch Greg in this race “He was so good over the short trip off the second row - it’s so hard to win here - and Greg got it right every time.” assembled on the track to observe a minute’s silence in a tribute to the champion horseman A large crowd gathered on the lawn to join in the tribute The winner of more than $430,000 in prizemoney Tango Tara could find himself sunning his nine-year-old bones in Queensland in a couple of months’ time “We’re planning on taking a few up to the Inter Dominion and his owner Norm (Jenkin) lives up there,” Gath said he’s a stable favorite and he’s about the only I don’t want to get rid of Norm talks about sending him to a trainer at the beach so by winning these races along the way I get to keep him here for me.” Outstanding trotting mare Keayang Zahara did Greg Sugars racing silks proud when she carried them to victory while adding win number 15 to her picket fence career form line in the Hertz Melton Trotters Free For All Having her first start since winning the NZ Trotting Derby in December Keayang Zahara ($1.20 fav) sat parked outside the multiple Group 1 winner Im Ready Jet before finding sufficient energy to score by a head on the line in a mile rate of 1:55.2 for the 1720 metres having his first drive on the seven-time Group 1 winner had trouble keeping his feelings in check after the race “That’s why we’re in the game that's just unbelievable. I can’t thank the whole family enough for giving me the opportunity to drive on this horse and Jess (Tubbs) for letting me wear Greg's colours,” Craven said “I’ve known Greg since I started driving he was always such a great driver to get advice off when I was learning at the start but at the end of the day he was just a true friend to me and to so many people He's just going to be greatly missed,” he said.  Craven said Keayang Zahara had to call on all her considerable reserves of talent to maintain her unbeaten career record long time and she’s awfully hard to beat when she’s in front,” he said “This mare had to really dig deep and it’s a credit to everyone at home that had her spot on to race first-up and do it that way.” Voters across Melton and Moorabool largely backed Labor at the ballot box this election with the party retaining the seats of both Hawke and Gorton Labor’s Alice Jordon-Baird was elected as the new MP taking the seat from retiring Labor MP Brendan O’Connor Gorton covers Melton and Brimbank – with the electorate including suburbs Caroline Springs Mr O’Connor had held the seat since its creation in 2004 According to the Australian Electoral Commission Ms Jordan-Baird secured 60.40 per cent of votes on a two-party basis over Liberal candidate John Fletcher – who had received 39.60 per cent Ms Jordan-Baird said that it is “the greatest honour of my life to have been elected to represent the federal seat of Gorton” “I’m ready to get to work with the Albanese Labor Government to deliver for our community here in the west – for families for workers and for everyone,” Ms Jordan-Baird said Transport was a key topic focused on in both the Labor and Liberal party campaigns in the electorate this election with Labor revealing budget funding for both upgrades to the Western Freeway and Calder Park Drive The Liberal Party matched the commitment to deliver both projects if elected Labor’s Sam Rae held on to the seat of Hawke in the electorate’s second term of existence with Liberal candidate Simmone Cottom receiving 42.36 per cent This represents a 0.02 per cent swing to Labor Created in 2022 after a boundary distribution Hawke covers 1986 square kilometres and includes Melton Mr Rae said that he was “honoured to continue representing our wonderful community I’m here to fight for our community to get what we deserve,” Mr Rae said Greg Sugars will be honoured in a variety of ways trains three of the nine harness racing runners in the Vale Greg Sugars Free-For-All (Race 5) has jetted back from a working holiday in that will permanently separate trains and vehicles at 2 Melton level crossings The rail line is being elevated at Coburns Road and Exford Road and a new accessible Melton Station with 4 platforms is being built as part of the project. Along with road bridges at Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina, the 4 level crossing removals will ease congestion and improve safety on local roads by permanently separating trains and vehicles. Crews at Coburns and Exford roads are using a 75-tonne piling rig to dig 40 holes up to 9m deep. These holes – or piles – will form the concrete pillars that support the weight of the rail bridge and the new station. Once piling is complete, works will continue to build the rest of the bridge structures and elevated station. The new Melton Station will have 4 platforms to provide dedicated platforms for trains starting and terminating at Melton, while also accommodating Ballarat services. The level crossings will be gone for good and the new station open in 2026 – 2 years ahead of schedule. Across Melbourne, we are removing 110 level crossings by 2030, with 85 already gone for good. Unauthorised reproduction is prohibited Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs held strong for Labor as Anthony Albanese was returned as prime minister on Saturday. Opposition leader Peter Dutton conceded the elections at 9.30pm and congratulated Mr Albanese. As of 9.30pm, Labor was ahead in 72 seats and projected to pick up a few more. The Liberals seem to have suffered a significant swing in Fraser or 7.16 per cent according to the Australian Electoral Commission as at 10pm on election night. Votes have flowed to Family First, Greens and the Victorian Socialists, which all recorded an upswing in their primary vote in Fraser. Sitting MP Daniel Mulino recorded a slight .5 per cent downturn in his primary vote. There were not two party preferred figures at the time of publication. Mr Mulino’s margin,, which sat at more than 16 per cent before this election, is expected to increase when all votes are counted. The seat covers most of Brimbank, and following a redistribution, some northern parts of Hobsons Bay, is one of the Albanese government’s safest. Satish Patel, was only announced as Liberal candidate for Fraser on April 7, more than a week after the election was called. The delay was caused by the party’s previous candidate, Luan Walker, having to stand down in March after being found in breach of Section 44 of the constitution by having dual Vietnamese citizenship. Labor has increased its majority in Gellibrand with the Australian Electoral Commission projecting a 6 per cent swing to the party on a two party preferred basis at 10pm on election night and comfortably returning sitting MP Tim Watts. Mr Watts was projected to attract 67.2 per cent of the two party preferred vote compared to his Liberal rival’s 32.8 per cent. The inner-west seat has been held by the Labor Party since it was created in 1949. Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Tim Watts has held Gellibrand since 2013. Traditionally based around Footscray, the creation of the neighbouring seat of Fraser in 2018 meant Gellibrand was pushed to the south and west, taking in parts of the Wyndham council area such as Point Cook, Williams Landing and Truganina . Meanwhile losing Yarraville means Gellibrand no longer takes in any part of the Maribyrnong council area and Spotswood and Brooklyn shifting to Fraser means it no longer covers all of Hobson’s Bay either. Gorton has a new MP with Alice Jordon-Baird succeeding long-serving retiring Labor MP Brendan O’Connor. Mr O’Connor previously held the seat of Burke from 2001 to 2004, which was in place before the formation of Gorton, meaning he had represented much of the area for 24 years. Labor attracted a 2.4 per cent swing on a two party preferred basis according to the Australian Electoral Commission on election night. New MP Alice Jordon-Baird attracted 62.3 per cent of the two party preferred vote, compared to her Liberal rival, John Fletcher’s 37.62 per cent. Gorton covers Brimbank and Melton with much of the electorate part of the growth areas between the Melton township and Brimbank. The electorate includes Caroline Springs, Burnside, Hillside, Fraser Rise, Taylors Hill, Albanvale, Deer Park, Kings Park, Delahey, Sydenham, Taylors Lakes and Keilor. The Labor Party promised budget funding for both upgrades to the Western Freeway and Calder Park Drive. Hawke MP Sam Rae attracted a small swing in line with the broader ALP swing nationally to comfortably retain Hawke. As of 10pm on election night, the Australian Electoral Commission predicted a 1.8 per cent swing to Labor in Hawke which was created in 2022 after a boundary redistribution. Mr Rae attracted 59.4 of the two party preferred vote compared to 40.5 per cent for his Liberal rival Simmone Cottom as of 10pm on election night. Covering 1986 square kilometres and including Sunbury, Melton, Bacchus Marsh, and Ballan, the electorate was first contested at the last election. The seat was visited by opposition leader Peter Dutton four times during the campaign. Labor increased its vice-like grip on Lalor recording a 3.36 per cent swing according to the Australian Electoral Commission predicted outcome on election night. The swing to Labor followed a 16.5 per cent swing against the party’s primary vote in February’s Werribee state by-election. Sitting MP Joanne Ryan was re-elected for a fifth time attracting a 3.36 per swing to Labor gaining 66 per cent two party preferred votes as at 10pm on election night. Her Liberal rival, Mira D’Silva, attracted 34 per cent of the two party preferred vote. The seat, which includes the suburbs of Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Williams Landing and parts of Truganina and Point Cook, has been held by Labor since 1969. After an electoral restructure in 2022, Lalor lost about 10,000 voters in parts of Truganina, Williams Landing and Point Cook to Gellibrand in the east. Despite the seat shrinking in area from 464 to 180 square kilometres, much of which was down to a thinly populated corridor in Little River that was redistributed to Corio, Labor’s margin remained relatively unchanged. Maribyrnong has a new MP but it is likely it will remain a Labor stronghold. As of 9pm, the AEC was projecting that Labor would win the seat 65.76 per cent to the Liberal Party’s 34.24 per cent on a two-party preferred basis. Those figures represent a 2.05 per cent swing to Labor. According to the AEC, Labor’s Jo Briskey 41.58 per cent of first preferences, with 64 per cent of polling booths counted. Liberal candidate Tim Beddoe had 28.69 per cent. Bill Shorten retired as Maribyrnong MP in January, having represented the seat since 2007. Prior to the election, Labor held the seat by a margin of 13 per cent. Based in Melbourne’s western suburbs, Maribyrnong covers 70 square kilometres between CityLink and Pascoe Vale Road in the east, and the Maribyrnong River in the west. Among the suburbs it covers is Gladstone Park, Keilor Park and Tullamarine. Labor has held the seat from 1969 and is classed a very safe seat heading into the election. passed in New South Wales over the weekend shattering news that was felt across the globe having been widely regarded as one of Australia’s greatest drivers after a 25-year career that boasted more than 4000 wins As the “fastest growing city in Australia,“ Melton council will be the next Australian municipality to join a mayoral taskforce that aims to support people seeking asylum Melton will become a general member council of the Local Government Mayoral Taskforce Supporting People Seeking Asylum which aims to support and reduce the waiting times for applicants seeking refugee status in Australia The taskforce consists of more than 40 councils across Australia It collaborates with refugees and asylum seeker organisations to advocate to the federal government to address policies and guidelines affecting humanitarian arrivals The taskforce’s priorities include providing all people waiting for their protection application with a valid visa and associated work rights; simplifying the application process and expanding the eligibility for a government support service program for those seeking asylum, and ensuring an independent and effective merits review process for all humanitarian applications At the April 28 council meeting Melton mayor Steve Abboushi said joining the taskforce was important “personally but also from a perspective of the community” and having met with a number of refugees seeking asylum in the city … I know how important it is for this cohort to be represented but also for them to feel empowered,” Cr Abboushi said “My father was a refugee … and this country provided the incredible opportunities to myself and my eight siblings … and I’d like to think that if we can be a voice for refugees in our community and they too go on and grow older and have those opportunities as afforded to them then that would be a blessing to them also.“ Melton’s role will include assisting the executive in selecting and implementing the taskforce’s priorities and providing resources where needed to help achieve these priorities Dandenong council mayor Jim Memeti wrote to Melton A general membership of the taskforce costs $500 per year We’re Professional field researchers will randomly select homes across the municipality to ask residents about a range of topics including their satisfaction with local planning and council programs A total of 800 homes will be involved in the survey This data will then inform the council’s ongoing services by helping to reveal where residents’ needs are being met Residents who have been selected for the survey can expect a knock on their door between Saturday June 8 for the approximately 15-minute survey Melton mayor Steve Abboushi said it is important that the council hears from the community to understand if it is meeting its needs and expectations in terms of service delivery “The survey helps [Melton council] to gain insight into the community’s satisfaction with council services and Victoria are required to introduce a standard four-stream waste and recycling system by July 1 This means that two new bins will be introduced to your home in July 2027 – a purple glass recycling bin and a green food organics and garden organics (FOGO) bin Melton residents can opt in to use a green FOGO bin at their home at no additional cost to other waste collection services The new glass bin set to be introduced will complement the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) by offering another alternative for residents to recycle glass – including types which are not yet accepted by the CDS Melton mayor Steve Abboushi said the council has “undertaken research to help determine what the new service model will look like and to ensure it best fits the needs of residents while meeting our requirements as mandated by the Victorian Government” Residents will receive information from the council closer to the roll-out outlining what the changes are and when they will take effect The council also aims to support the community with the transition through a comprehensive education campaign to inform what items should go in each bin Reallocating funding for upgrades to Sunshine station to projects elsewhere in Melbourne risks future plans to electrify the rail line to Melton Melton council and the chair of LeadWest hasvewarned federal opposition leader Peter Dutton and opposition infrastructure spokeswoman Bridget McKenzie announced that a Coalition government would redirect $2 billion the federal government committed for upgrades at Sunshine station and $2.2 billion committed for the Suburban Rail Loop to other rail and road projects These include duplicating Donnybrook Road and planning for the extension of the Upfield train line in the north and extending the Frankston train line to Langwarrin and Baxter in the south-east Mr Dutton and Ms McKenzie said the Coalition would also provide an extra $1.5 billion for Melbourne Airport Rail with the state Liberals to provide $1.5 billion if elected in 2026 They said upgrades at Sunshine station to connection regional and suburban passengers to the airport would be funded under the extra $3 billion they have not committed to funding other improvements at Sunshine which would pave the way for electrification of the train line to Melton LeadWest chair and Melton councillor Phillip Zada said removing any funding from the upgrade to Sunshine station would have a “detrimental effect“ Cr Zada said Mr Dutton and Ms McKenzie needed to justify reallocating the funding and talk to the community to understand why the upgrades are so important adding that Melton residents have been waiting a long time for upgrades to their rail line “They don’t understand what it means to be in the west,“ he said Melton mayor Steve Abboushi said the full upgrade of Sunshine Station is required to create more capacity and platforms for additional services for Melton “We are strongly calling for a commitment and timeframes for the electrification of the Melton rail line  Our growing community deserves equity in access to efficient frequent public transport.,” he said “With half of our residents lacking access to public transport within walking distance and an additional 45,000 commuters projected over the next 30 years electrification of the Melton rail line needs to happen as a priority.” ‘The Dress’ might just epitomise the notion that things aren’t always what they seem – especially in Melbourne at the end of the 19th century While widow Hannah may live in a grand mansion and not want for anything the advent of department stores and retail therapy is a hit to the pocket and prominence alike Essence Theatre Productions chairperson Alaine Beek quite literally puts herself in Hannah’s shoes by playing the character herself you were often just given tenancy and you didn’t really own much,” Ms Beek said Hannah loves Bertin for the light he brings to her overcast life but his escapades are something she desperately tries to evade The dynamic duo will embark on a tale of insistence and resistance when he tries to drag her along to a masquerade ball On top of facing the loss of his livelihood Bertin must also walk a fine line as a gay man in a society that can be both ambivalent and persecutory but if he gets in the wrong circle he could be in trouble,” Ms Beek said The show will be staged at Werribee Park Mansion on Friday Tickets: www.essencetheatre.productions/the-dress-booking-page There are about 900 species of eucalypts in Australia and an upcoming workshop at the Melton Botanic Garden will give you the opportunity to sketch and appreciate just some of these incredible trees Friends of Melton Botanic Garden and environmental psychology doctor Kathleen Bagot are partnering to host a two-hour nature sketching and journaling workshop this month providing sketching skills and an opportunity to practise mindfulness in an outdoor setting with like-minded nature enthusiasts The event coincides with Botanic Gardens Week The workshop starts with a guided nature-based mindfulness practice followed by a warm up with some different sketching techniques and discussion of template options There will then be a discussion about eucalypts and the session will end with a chance to share your thoughts and sketching pages with other attendees All supplies will be provided to participants new to nature sketching or journaling and no experience or art skills are required Experienced sketchers are welcome to bring their own favourite journal and supplies Ms Bagot said the event is aimed at being accessible and inclusive to all who would like to attend “You don’t have to be an artist or a scientist to do nature journaling … it really is about slowing down O’Connor previously held the seat of Burke from 2001 to 2004 which was in place before the formation of Gorton meaning he had represented much of the area for 24 years Gorton covers Brimbank and Melton with much of the electorate part of the growth areas between the Melton township and Brimbank Gorton has historically been a safe Labor seat having replaced the more marginal seat of Burke Mr O’Connor received a 10 per cent swing against him on first preferences but Liberal candidate John Fletcher didn’t pick up any of the extra votes with an 0.6 per cent swing against the Liberal Party the Labor Party still held a 60 to 40 per cent lead despite a swing of 4.3 per cent against it Mr Fletcher will again stand for the Liberal Party with Alice Jordan-Baird nominated as the person to replace Mr O’Connor who stood for the Legalise Cannabis Party in the Werribee state by-election Pauline Hanson’s One Nation’s Alan Reid and the Greens’ Thuc Bao Huynh are the other candidates starting strong competition RELATED: Iconic burger chain Wendy’s eyes first Melbourne store New $70m shopping centre coming to Melbourne’s west Future of gold rush Coffee Palace up in the air Savills Melbourne director Stephen Bolton said while he wouldn’t confirm names that the Barries Rd site was one of the last opportunities for buyers to purchase in the Woodgrove precinct “The zoning allows for a range of large-scale developments,” Mr Bolton said “We know the calibre of interest that came for the old Bunnings site next door and we expect similar major players here.” The 1.6ha commercial site in Melton West is ready to be snapped up Woodgrove Shopping Centre boasts seven million visitors a year Mr Bolton said the sites proximity to Woodgrove Shopping Centre which attracts more than seven million visitors a year has already put it on the radar for major national retailers and developers looking to capitalise on Melbourne’s booming outer west “Interest has been incredibly strong – the fundamentals are all here.” Developers and investors are already circling keen to secure a foothold in one of Melbourne’s strongest growth corridors The site also boasts 65,000+ passing vehicles daily and is located alongside major brands like McDonald’s Savills Melbourne director Rick Silberman said the demand reflected Melton’s rapid transformation into a major commercial and retail hub with land values in the area skyrocketing in recent years driven by increasing demand for large-format retail and commercial space “Land values here have soared over the past five to 10 years and demand isn’t slowing down,” Mr Silberman said The $900 million new Melton hospital that will be completed in 2029 with the capacity to treat 130,000 patients a year we expect this to be one of the most competitive Airport Rail and Melton line electrification A $650m upgrade to Melton Station will boost capacity by 50 per cent preparing the area for even greater growth Mr Bolton said major infrastructure investment was driving a wave of commercial development with businesses positioning themselves now before prices surge “It won’t be long before Melton is seamlessly linked to the Melbourne CBD and the airport making sites like this even more valuable,” he said “This isn’t just a retail hub anymore — it’s an emerging business and transport centre.” Melton Station design – for Herald Sun Real Estate Sweetnikkilou on Saturday night was top notch She was caught parked in a hot free for all field and surged up to challenge around the corner before dropping back late after sizzling final quarters of 27.4 and 26.5 She's very handy and the right barrier draw should see her back in the winner's stall There's no doubt a few tunes create some great atmosphere wherever you are so could we incorporate some music into our meetings at Melton Entertainment Park How cool would it be to have drivers indicate their favourite song and have it played loudly when they return to the winner's circle for soon kick off with major changes to the rail network around Sunshine Station to enable a line to the airport and the future electrification to Melton This upgrade is the essential first step to connect Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s regional and metropolitan rail networks and pave the way for more train services for the growing communities of Melton and Wyndham Vale A program of works spanning more than 6km from West Footscray to Albion will include two new dedicated regional platforms and an extended concourse at Sunshine Station new signalling technology and realigned passenger and freight lines to untangle this complex section of the rail network The package of works is not only the first step towards a rail line to Melbourne Airport but will also pave the way for future upgrades in the west including an electrified line to Melton These upgrades will ensure Sunshine Station can support more than 40 train services per hour creating capacity for additional services for the growing west and to the airport Delivering these upgrades around Sunshine now will drastically reduce disruptions required to deliver future upgrades including the electrification to Melton The Victorian Government will also deliver a new modern Albion Station featuring an accessible concourse with lifts and stairs with works expected to start in early 2026 and be complete in 2030 Plans were awash for the cup which was set to be held on February 14-16 but has been postponed until further notice due to water levels at the Melton Reservoir Australia’s fastest Blown Alcohol Displacement (B.A.D.) racing boats compete in a number of races at Melton with about 2500 spectators normally attending each day Melbourne Roundabout and Speedboating Club commodore Chris Dynon said they were disappointed having to cancel the event “It’s too unsafe to run speedboats,” he said we had to postpone because the water levels are at 35 per cent “Anything under 35 per cent is too dangerous to run a race because it becomes too narrow.” The water levels at Melton Reservoir have dropped below 35 per cent and with water continuing to be released daily it is projected that levels will fall below 30 per cent by race weekend there are no concrete plans for the rescheduled date of the event other than it is going to go ahead at a later date “It all depends on nature now,” Mr Dynon said The Melton Gold Cup is the first round of the Nationals Drivers Championship and so many competitors travel from different places around the country Mr Dynon said everyone is disappointed because they all love coming to Melton Reservoir He said they will hold a barbecue on February 15 that we get some rain to reschedule the event,” he said “We’re going to have a barbecue… We’re going to put that on for the race teams and spectators that still want to show up “A lot of people plan for this trip so we’re going to put on a barbecue Greg Sugars is hoping First Dance can follow in the footsteps of his settled mid field in the running line before Sugars pulled out four wide approaching the home turn First Dance gathered in the leaders comfortably to score by two metres from Arggghhh in a mile rate of 1:53 for the 1720 metre sprint trip Sugars said the race panned out perfectly for the daughter of A Rocknroll Dance “It turned out the best you could hope for under those circumstances I didn’t have to spend any extra petrol early and lobbed in a good spot and she trailed a horse that took her right to the top of the straight,” Sugars said “And then she got the job done nicely,” he said Sugars said the five-year-old was beginning to fulfil the potential she showed as a young horse “For a period there as a three-year-old we thought we had a pretty smart mare on our hands but for a while she didn’t really live up to expectations but if she continues to improve the way she has in the past few months she is going to turn out to be a pretty good mare,” he said Earlier in the night of 1:53.8 for the 2240 metres Mt Atkinson resident Gaurav Sharma’s daily 25-kilometre commute to the city by car takes him up to 90 minutes He and his wife would like to take the train to work “We struggle with the train from Rockbank station due to long travel times What should be a 10-minute journey by car to the train station Overcrowded trains mean the couple is often unable to board and have to wait 20 minutes for the next one Mr Sharma is sharing his story as part of Melton council’s ‘Let’s get the City of Melton Moving’ campaign which is calling for further federal investment in the municipality’s rail and roads calling on all major parties contesting the May 3 federal election to commit to additional investment as a matter of priority Council said the campaign’s top priorities are the electrification of the Melton rail line and new stations at Mt Atkinson Also on the list are urgent upgrades to key roads including Hopkins Road and the Palmers Road Corridor north of the Western Highway (including Robinsons Road Mayor Steve Abboushi said with the population of the City of Melton set to almost double in the next 30 years to a size greater than Canberra investment in adequate transport infrastructure needed to happen now “More than 70 per cent of our workforce travel outside the City of Melton to work every day our major arterial roads are already heavily congested and our rail services at capacity,” Cr Abboushi said we can’t afford to wait any longer for this critical investment.” Labor and the Liberal Party have both committed $1 billion to upgrade the Western Highway while Labor and the state government have announced $300 million to upgrade the Calder Freeway’s Calder Park Drive diamond interchange Liberal leader Peter Dutton has also announced plans to cut funding for upgrades to Sunshine station if the Coalition wins government which council said would put the electrification of the Melton line at risk Council said electrifying the rail line and stations at Mt Atkinson Thornhill Park and Calder Park would allow for a 27 per cent increase in public transport usage and also result in 12,000 fewer cars on the road each day “There’s a lot more investment needed for our community,” Cr Abboushi said “Our residents are spending more time travelling than what is needed meaning less time spent with family and friends has been How who has the listing alongside fellow agent John Rombotis noted the property was currently in a Green Wedge Zone green wedges are classified as non-urban areas located outside Melbourne’s urban growth boundary Owners of land within the green wedges are limited in what non-rural uses they can pursue and must only have one dwelling per 40ha lot The green wedges were designated to protect land’s agricultural and environmental value – and have been implemented in municipalities across Greater Melbourne including Melton Mr How said that whoever purchased the Ryans Lane address would be taking an “educated gamble” on the Victorian government potentially deciding to rezone the site to allow residential development in the future Land near the site has been earmarked for Precinct Structure Plans (PSPs) by the Victorian Planning Authority PSPs set out the development guidelines for future suburbs and estates including roads is about a two-minute drive to Melton’s town centre and Kurunjang schools one of Australia’s fastest-growing municipalities has a population of more than 200,000 people according to figures from data consultancy Informed Decisions Melton’s population is expected to grow to 440,142 residents by 2051 Mr How said that if the Ryans Lane block was rezoned its earning potential “would be out of control in the next 10-15 years” let’s say it’s sold for between $8m to $10m it’s value would double overnight,” he said but anyone who wants to land bank for a period of time this has the potential for exceptional money should the state government rezone or PSP it.” he added it was important for anyone thinking of land banking a site to do their research before buying They must also be prepared to wait up to decades before a site might even be considered for rezoning An artist’s impression of the $900m million new Melton hospital due to be completed 2029 The Ryans Lane site currently for sale is about a seven-minute drive to the future hospital The Ryans Lane address is also about 5.4km to the Woodgrove shopping centre in Melton West Mr How said that in his 27 years working in Melton outside of the Victorian’s government decision-making the process for having a green wedge land parcel rezoned is a long and involved one the local council must give their approval and then the Minister for Planning must give a thumbs up A planning scheme amendment has to be prepared and the proposal must pass both houses of the Victorian parliament Mr How said the Ryans Lane site was close to Melton town centre’s shops and nearby schools “If you wanted a rural outlook but the benefit or convenience of a township The state government has also committed more than $900m to build a new Melton hospital in Mr How said the future The all-conquering Emma Stewart stable achieved yet another milestone winning all seven heats of the Nutrien Equine Classic Series run at Melton on Friday afternoon. In fact, they produced the quinella pair in five heats and a 1-3 finish in another division from 15 stable representatives! Knight Fury Dan and Cardigan Dan, a pair of two-year-old colts raced by Danny Zavitsanos, Warren Viney and Warren Stewart, set the tone for the day in leading most of the way for decisive victories at their first appearances. Frolicnearthesea, one of two winners for Jamie Durnberger’s Summit Bloodstock, sat parked throughout to capture the two-year-old fillies’ heat on debut. The other Summit Bloodstock winner was the three-year-old filly Iveseenheavenslight, the reigning Vicbred champion, who led from pillar to post. The filly is co-owned by Aaron Bain Racing. The Highlight Reel, winner of the Nutrien Equine Classic as a two-year-old last season, and Cigano, a pair of Poster Boy colts raced by Stewart’s partner Clayton Tonkin, won their respective divisions, while the Somebeachsomewhere three-year-old filly Beach Diamond made it two for two with a very impressive score in her heat. Woodlands Stud’s sires produced three of the seven heat winners in Cardigan Dan and Frolicnearthesea (both by Downbytheseaside) and Ivseenheavenslight (by Bettor’s Delight). Beach Diamond, bred by Wagga studmaster Jake Stockton’s Wingate Farm, fetched the highest price of the seven heat winners garnering $62,500 at the inaugural Sunshine Stars sale at the Gold Coast in 2023. The next highest price paid was $50,000 for Iveseenheavenslight, bred by Bruce and Vicki Edward’s Durham Park Standardbreds. Cardigan Dan, brought out by Benstud Standardbreds, realised $45,000, Knight Fury Dan (Lauriston Bloodstock) made $37,500, Cigano (Wayne and Eliza Hamilton) sold for $22,000, Frolicnearthesea (Woodlands Stud) was knocked down for $14,000 and The Highlight Reel (the late Les Johnson) fetched $10,000. Melton Produce has closed its doors after 24 years, after VicTrack took back possession of the land and building as part of its plans to upgrade Melton train station. VicTrack owns the land the Melton Produce building is on, and the building itself. It leased the site to Melton Produce owner Peter Earl. The store is housed in a 20th century pre-fabricated frameless steel shed built in 1964 as a storage shed for the Grain Elevator Board. It originally had a distribution auger/elevator on the side facing the road, and a chute on the other side facing the tracks. Mr Earl modified the building to let cars drive through the front door, load sacks of produce in the vehicle, and drive out the backdoor. In 2018, the Melton council tried add the building to the heritage list but failed because of how little of the original infrastructure was left after the land was re-developed over the years. “I was only little then, but I remember when it was built,” Mr Earl said of the shed. “I used to drive a truck here with my grandfather bringing grains here. “When the council tried to heritage list it, the railways opposed it, which pretty well indicated that there was going to be infrastructure changes.” Despite plans to demolish the shed as soon as Melton Produce closes, Mr Earl remains hopeful the building will be saved. “I think in Australia, there’s only this one and another one still existing,” he said. A Level Crossing Removal Project spokesperson said work at the site was part of the state government’s plans for a new Melton station featuring improved platforms. Mr Earl, now 70, said he was devastated about having to close his livelihood, but would take the opportunity to retire and visit family interstate. He said his customers and community members were devastated to hear the news “I worked five-and-a-half days, sometimes six days a week, so it’s a pretty full-on business,” he said. “A lot of customers, they’ve been coming here themselves for 20 years and it’s convenient to a lot of people. “Now, I’ll probably go to Queensland and visit my daughter, and start watching Hawthorn win premierships again.” Picture by Greg GliddonA narrow defeat is one thing but when it happens after losing arguably your best player All articles from our website & appThe digital version of Today's PaperBreaking news alerts direct to your inboxInteractive Crosswords Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueBut Sebastopol coach Tony Lockyer was still putting on a brave face after Saturday's 10.8 (68) to 11.18 (84) loss to Melton despite him having to race off for scans on what looks certain to be a broken arm Lockyer's departure from the game in the first half could have been the death knell for the Burra after looking all at sea for a quarter-and-a-half and all but for a little bit of luck in the last quarter The Burra was charging home on the breeze and had kicked the first two goals of the quarter when another looked to have gone through which would have reduced Melton's lead to 11 points it was barely a coat of varnish that ultimately changed the course of the contest that Sebastopol players had every right to start celebrating it was a behind and the Bloods raced the ball down the other end of the ground to goal taking the lead out beyond 20 points again The ability that the Burra has had to finish off games all season has been their hallmark reducing the lead to nine points deep into the last quarter kicking the final goal of the game to win by 16 points The Bloods can thank the likes of Ryan Carter who went down back in the last quarter and a tireless game from Jaycob Hickey for getting them over the line This game last season was memorable for all the wrong reasons for the Burra with the Bloods inflicting the club's worst defeat of the season This time Sebastopol can hold its head high and should be singing the song in the next couple of weeks all going to plan Lockyer said he had got his arm caught in a contest but we'll go get scans now and see," he said "I thought the ball hitting the post was a bit of a turning point we should take a bit of confidence from that Melton are the yardstick of the competition and we were in a position to win the game in the end Joel Van Meel of East Point and Rudie Forde had a great duel in the ruck Picture by Lachlan Bence"Unfortunately we still are 0-3 but we've had some really good performances against East Point and now Melton shows we can match it." Lockyer said he felt early his team had been a little gun shy to take the game on "We didn't commit to our method early enough," he said maybe a memory of what happened last year and we probably went into our shells a little bit "Its understandable coming up against Melton for the boys to be a little bit conservative We've taken some big steps forward but unfortunately it hasn't acquainted to premiership points yet It was hard to get a smile out of any of the Bloods players after the game but coach Troy Scoble was incredibly positive about the game "The boys hold themselves to really high standards and really high account and we felt today our first quarter-and-a-half but we had a send off and it probably changed the momentum of the game we gave up a number of goals from free kicks Early in the game it probably mirrored that game last year "We are just really proud to come away with a win in the end Jake Egan was best afield for Sunbury in the win over North Ballarat File pictureEast Point overcame the fright of its life early to pull away from Redan eventually prevailing 16.9 (105) to 8.13 (61) Redan had the first four goals on the board and 12 of the first 13 scoring shots it powered away with arguably the best second half it has produced this season East Point coach Joe Carmody said his side had wilted early under sustained pressure from Redan but he was pleased with the way they fought back their intensity around the ball was rally good I think it was 19 inside 50s to six at quarter time we couldn't get it out of our back half," he said "Then when we started to win in the midfield we were able to start playing our way." Matt Johnston was moved forward after copping a knock to his knee He would boot five goals showing his versatility up forward But the win looks to have come at a cost with the in-form Paddy Hannaford dislocating his shoulder and is set to miss the rest of the season and Max Wilson is feared to have torn his ACL and will be scanned this week A 10-goal-to-nil opening half set Sunbury up for a big win over North Ballarat The lions eventually slowing down winning 14.9 (93) to 6.9 (45) Sunbury coach Matt White said he couldn't have been happier with the way his side attacked the contest early "To keep them goalless for a half of footy and kick 10 on the trot was outstanding Brett Bewley was back to his best in Darley's win over Bacchus Marsh Picture by Lachlan Bence"Jake Egan was brilliant in the first half My favourite thing to come out of the game was Sean Reilly just got back to what I think is him as the best full back in the league he controlled everything which was fantastic." Darley pulled away late to secure a solid win over Bacchus Marsh in their derby match-up The Devils got away in the third quarter with a six-goal-to-two blast to open up the match-winning lead Brett the Melton level crossings The rail line at Coburns Road and Exford Road is being elevated and a new accessible Melton Station with four platforms is being built as part of the project These level crossing removals aim to ease congestion and improve safety on local roads by permanently separating road and rail traffic crews are using a 75-tonne piling rig to dig 40 holes up to 9 metres deep forming the concrete pillars that will support the new rail bridges and station structure construction will continue on the rest of the bridge structures and the elevated station The new Melton Station will feature dedicated platforms for trains starting and terminating at Melton while also accommodating Ballarat line services the very impressive winner of the Haras Des Trotteurs 2YO Trot at was pretty old at the time and I thought I might get a couple more out of her “It’s incredible that every one that I’ve had has won except for God Youre Good She had talent but proved a bit of a Philip Nott conducts the online cricket betting service Cricketbet “Dad and I started the business 25 years ago and it’s still ticking along,” he said I have loved it ever since I was about nine I was wagging school to catch the train to the Moonee Valley Monday meetings I was a professional gambler and when I was 19 I drove in two trials and quickly determined that I wasn’t going to have a career as a trotting driver!” Craig and his father have bred and raced a number of good winners over the years “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree….we’ve both had too many horses,” Craig said “The difference is that dad had a couple that paid for all the slow ones so I’m hoping that one of the Starcus progeny might be the one to get to metropolitan class and pay for a few of the slower ones.” Works to build a new Melton Station and remove 4 level crossings in Melbourne’s west are a step closer with final designs released this week and construction set to begin later this year In Melton, new rail bridges will take trains over Coburns and Exford roads, and road bridges will be built over Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road in Truganina. This project will make Melton level crossing free in 2026 – 2 years ahead of schedule. The new Melton Station will be built with 4 platforms to cater for one of the fastest-growing communities in Australia, paving the way for future improvements and increased capacity on the line. The final designs were informed by community feedback from more than 850 submissions earlier this year. The team heard the community was keen to see the 4 level crossings gone and wanted better connections and improved access for pedestrians and cyclists moving around the area. Both road bridges at Ferris and Hopkins roads will have dedicated shared use paths to make journeys easier and safer for all commuters. Locals also said they wanted to see improved passenger facilities at the new Melton Station, with a design that prioritised safety and landscaped areas featuring a range of native and indigenous plants, trees and grasses. The new station will be accessible from both sides of the rail line with an expansive pedestrian walkway, pick-up and drop-off zones and each platform accessible via 2 lifts and stairs. The station will also include a new air-conditioned waiting room and staffed ticket office, along with lighting and security cameras throughout the surrounding area. These major transport upgrades will make moving around Melbourne’s west easier for locals, with the 73,000 vehicles that use these level crossings every day no longer held up by boom gates, which can be down for almost 30 minutes during the morning peak. Contracts for the works were recently awarded and site establishment works are set to kick off in the coming weeks, with construction scheduled to begin later this year. Despite building an imposing career resume, the Andy Gath-trained Yambukian finds it difficult to step out of the considerable shadow cast by his younger sibling. In most other families, Yambukian’s record of six metropolitan successes en route to more than $230,000 in prizemoney would be the headline act. Not when your younger half-brother happens to be eight-time Group 1 winner Catch A Wave. Yambukian again showed his penchant for racing at Melton when he led all the way in the CNR Router Bits Free For All on Saturday night. With Jordan Leedham in the sulky, Yambukian ($3.60 fav) showed his customary gate speed to head off stablemate Tango Tara shortly after the start, with his main danger Bulletproof Boy ($3.80) working around to keep him company. In the run to the line, Yambukian managed to stave off a gallant Bulletproof Boy by half a head with Tango Tara three metres away third in a mile rate of 1:51.7 for the 1720-metre sprint trip. Leedham said finding the lead was the catalyst in winning the race. “He was a lot sharper tonight than what he usually is and from the wide draw I was able to get across,” Leedham said. “It was a quick first 200 (metres) off the gate, but once I got across to the pegs he came back to me straight away and I was able to get a cheap second quarter. “Then he got rolling down the back and he was good enough to hang on.” The seven-year-old’s racetrack performances are not lost on Gath. “I know he’s often referred to as Catch A Wave’s older brother, but his record shows he’s a good horse in his own right,” Gath said. “He’s a genuine horse who always gives his best. “He’s a 120 rater now so it all gets down to barrier draws in these free-for-alls, but he’s always hard to beat when he finds the front.” Create change and stand up for your beliefs by starting your own petition today Take a look at some other petitions related to causes you care about. The electrification of the Melton rail line is a step closer after the federal government announced $325 million to upgrade the line. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the funding as part of a $3.3 billion package for road and rail projects in Victoria. Mr Albanese said $2 billion would go toward upgrading Sunshine train station and the construction of a spur line to enable trains to run to Melbourne Airport. Some of the funding will go towards track, bridge and signalling improvements to enable future upgrades to service Melbourne’s north and west, including enabling the commencement of work on the electrification of the Melton line. Mr Albanese said this is a vital part of delivering better rail services for people in the west going to work, not just the airport. Victorian Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams said reconfiguring Sunshine station would create more capacity for more services and paved the way for future upgrades to electrify the Melton line. Melton mayor Steve Abboushi said council welcomed the $325 million for the Melton line. “We are currently seeking clarification on the scope of this announcement and a full commitment for funding with timelines on delivery of the electrification of the Melton line,” he said.
