More than 60 swimmers turned out, including 15 new swimmers who had joined the club known for its camaraderie, fitness, and cold-water fun. View +4 PhotosCommunity and Camaraderie: The Merewether Mackerels' focus is on providing a supportive and inclusive winter swimming community where members rarely take themselves too seriously and try to always prioritise fun, friendship, and fitness. The Mackerels' season opener has become a cultural institution in Newcastle. Club president Steve Weller said about 80 per cent of their newest members were women. The swim was followed by a traditional hot cup of soup and a bread roll to warm up as swimmers reflected on the morning's activity. "It was a little bit cool on the pool deck, but the water was really warm, and we didn't get any rain," Mr Weller said. But the club's members are renowned for getting into the water every Sunday until the end of August, come rain, hail or shine. "It doesn't matter what the conditions are," Mr Weller said. "Worst case, the tide's high, the surf's big and the waves are coming in over the blocks, but even then we will get in for a swim. "There's never been a Sunday morning in the last 15 years that we haven't got in the water, which is one of the attractive things about it." In terms of temperature, swimmers can rest assured that the water will come down to a chilly 15 degrees for about three weeks of the year. "Guaranteed it will get down to 15, and every second season or so it gets down to 14 ... by which time it starts to sting a bit." Merewether has put a valued trophy back in its cabinet – reclaiming the Adams Halter Shield in front of a huge home crowd today. The man is understood to have suffered serious injuries to his head and limbs, as well as multiple abrasions to his body. NSW Ambulance paramedics and NSW Fire and Rescue crews worked tirelessly to provide medical treatment to the man under difficult circumstances on the rocky cliff face. A doctor is also understood to have been present who provided treatment to the man. The quick but careful work of emergency crews meant the man, believed to be in his 70s, was able to be placed in a cage and lifted to safety on the beach below where he was placed on a NSW Surf Life Saving club buggy. It's understood the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also called to the scene to assist, however, the man was able to be transferred from the buggy to an ambulance to be taken to hospital. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment and was understood to be in a serious condition on Friday afternoon. When the three founders of leading property development company Third.i established the retirement living division of their business, they kept their own parents in mind. "We said we wanted to create retirement products that we would be very proud to have our own parents living in," one of those founders, Luke Berry, says. "My mum and dad and all of their friends worked hard in their lives," he said. "And I think we owe it to that generation to create something truly exceptional. So our goal was to build beautifully designed, high-quality apartments, combined with the kind of incredible retirement village amenity that today's retirees are looking for." Now, ten years later, the company is preparing to begin construction on what will be the flagship development in its retirement living vision - The Merewether Residences at the Merewether Golf Club in Newcastle. Third.i has announced it has now appointed a building partner for the project and has a new funding partner on board - both of which will be unveiled at a celebration event at the Merewether Golf Course on November 28. Construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2025 and the expected completion date is 2027. Mr Berry said that after some delays for the development, which was first approved by state planning authorities in 2021, the company was excited to get started on this landmark luxury over-55s concept. "It is very exciting for us and everyone involved," he said. "The project has gone through a few challenges to get to this stage but now we're able to move ahead on creating something that will never be replicated in the region, it's such a rare opportunity. "It's a once-in-a-generation project and now we have a clear pathway to completion." The generously spacious apartments are designed with luxury features throughout Artist's impression supplied. The project includes the residential development that's integrated with the existing golf course It will comprise 178 luxury apartments overlooking the golf course extensive amenities - including a health and wellness space and cinema - and a new Merewether Golf Club clubhouse It all comes together to create a resort-style lifestyle for the community of more than 300 residents who'll be living there Mr Berry said the whole concept is aimed at helping people who are either approaching or in their retirement to transition into their "third age". "That's why we called our retirement division Third Age because we want to design these communities that are reflective of the new retiree that isn't ready to slow down - they just want to live a little more comfortably," he said. "The reality is retirees today want to be active. They want to play golf and to be out enjoying good food and wine, they want to right-size into a home that's going to be suitable for them for the next stage of their life - their third age - but without having to compromise on anything. The elegant apartments are flooded with natural light Artist's impression supplied"So we're building beautiful generously-sized apartments but combined with the retirement village amenities and the amazing connection to the golf club which is going to have food and beverage "These aren't people who are just going to go into our apartments and sit and watch the day go by they're surrounded by a beautiful green sanctuary and with people who are out enjoying the spaces and the amenities - young people meeting for afternoon drinks in the bar families celebrating a birthday at the restaurant "It's set up so you can easily engage with that community and that energy when you want to but at the same time the living is also far enough away so you can slow down and relax when you want to." Mr Berry said the current purchasers of the three two and one-bedroom apartments are mostly local downsizing Novocastrians but many are also people relocating from Sydney and regional New South Wales And among those buyers are his own parents "My parents are going to live there and a lot of their friends have decided to buy as well," Mr Berry said "We've got people moving from Sydney and also a lot of locals who are choosing to retire there We've got a lot of farmers from the middle "So we are bringing together a community that's going to be really interesting from a lot of different backgrounds who all want to live in this beautiful environment To find out more about The Merewether visit themerewether.com.au A 23-year-old man remains in custody tonight, accused of leading police on a car chase through Merewether, before coming to an abrupt halt. where a woman reportedly suffered a medical episode in the water and fell unconscious Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueWitnesses say the woman was swimming near the ramp leading into the water when she suddenly stopped her stroke and appeared unresponsive A cry for help was raised as bystanders rushed into the water pulled her from the shallows and began first aid Paramedics have told the Newcastle Herald that the woman was unconscious but breathing as emergency services arrived They determined that the apparent near drowning was triggered by a medical episode "Everyone moved so fast," an eyewitness told the Herald shortly after the incident unfolded They all just ran and helped immediately." The chosen tree species (pandanus pedunculatus, or screw pine) is well adapted to exposed coastal locations and was selected following consideration of the local soil and climate conditions. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Newcastle has proven it's more than capable of hosting major events. “Newcastle has become a destination of choice for promoters around the world thanks to the success of major events such as the Supercars Newcastle 500, Paul McCartney, Elton John and Pink concerts, as well as various international rugby union, league, football and netball matches,” Cr Nelmes said. “City of Newcastle also has a proud history of supporting world-class surfing as the founding sponsor of Surfest, which this year celebrated its 38th anniversary as the largest surfing festival in the Southern Hemisphere. “Newcastle's reputation as a premier surfing destination was enhanced when we hosted the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup in 2021, marking the first time a combined male-and-female World Championship Tour event was held in NSW since 1999.  "That event showcased Merewether Beach and Newcastle to a global audience of more than 10 million people and injected an estimated $15 million into the local economy. "Securing Surfest as part of the Challenger Series in 2025 and beyond represents a significant opportunity that would bring substantial economic, cultural, and tourism benefits to Newcastle and the wider Hunter region.” Surfest founder and Freeman of the City of Newcastle Warren Smith will meet with WSL officials in Queensland this week. Mr Smith said the passion of Cr Nelmes and City of Newcastle's support has resurrected the dream of adding Surfest to the six-event Challenger Series, which provides a stepping stone to the prestigious 10-event Championship Tour. "When the World Surf League restructured it competition structure three years ago Surfest became a Qualifying Series event for the Asia-Pacific region, essentially a third-tier event," Mr Smith said. "If we're successful in being added to the Challenger Series we'll welcome the return of surfers from all over the world, all vying to earn a spot on the Championship Tour." Merewether professional surfer Jackson Baker said he's extremely excited about the prospect of a Challenger Series event coming to his hometown and being hosted at his local beach. "Having won Surfest in 2022, it would mean the world to me to have an opportunity to win a Challenger Series event at home," Mr Baker said. "I travel the world all year to compete at all the Challenger Series stops so having an event at home would definitely boost my chances at requalifying for the Championship Tour." Fellow Merewether surfer Philippa Anderson said it’s events like Surfest that inspire childhood dreams. "From the age of 12 I watched Surfest at Newcastle Beach, then when it moved to Merewether where I started to compete a few years later. As an experienced surfer I now look back on how much those events meant to a young girl who had dreams to become a professional," Ms Anderson said. "If the Challenger Series comes to town all the young Novocastrians who aspire to follow in the footsteps of Mark Richards, Ryan Callinan, Morgan Cibilic and Jackson Baker will get to watch and maybe even surf with amazing female and male professional surfers. "There’s just nothing that can compare to that. I hope we can get the event here and the rest is history."
